    Hi Everyone

I’m a newbie and just joining the party. I’m a 48 year old Type 2 Diabetic with an underactive thyroid and currently 4 1/2 stone overweight. I’ve had a weight problem for most of my life but have had slim periods (though admittedly not in the last 15 years!) Lots of reasons for that, but historically I have found it difficult to lose weight and have a great talent for self sabotage when things start to look good, so have managed to lose and gain 11/2 stone TWICE in the last year. I’m not on any meds and my HBA1C is actually pretty good and has been as low as 4.9 a year ago but last test was 5.5 so it has gone up. Though my triglycerides were through the roof after my last test, so I have been referred to a specialist next month for that. It was that test result that made me decide to get serious about losing weight.

I have been doing daily intermittent fasting (not eating until 11) for about a month and I’m on Day 3 now of the BSD and have lost 3lbs. Not the big losses that others are showing, but I’m pleased so far. I have already lost 8lbs following a different plan previously but must admit to being drawn to the amazing results that people have been seeing with the BSD.

I’m looking forward to connecting, sharing results and recipes over the next few weeks.

    Hey mazzak
Well done on taking the decision to join the crew! Looks like you have been making good preparation – hope you have stocked the fridge and spring cleaned the cupboards too. I’m on my second stint of eight weeks and loss for me had been slow, but it’s still dropping and I’m feeling good.

My advise is to be kind to yourself, don’t panic if you struggle at first because it will all fall into place after a few days. Key things to remember are: drink plenty; be sure to include full fats to help make you feel full and stay that way for longer; record everything you eat and drink; and avoid root veggies as they tend to be high in carbs.

I find weighing daily really helps keep me focused and motivated, but some people prefer to weigh weekly. Find a garment you would love to get into again and use that as a measure for how well you are doing too.

As you will know from looking around on the forum, you will know that there is heaps in information and advise on here posted by wonderfully supportive people, so shout out if you need anything, someone will respond for sure.

Hello, I am new and starting the 800 blood sugar this weekend on Sunday, have read and re-read the book and looked around this site so I think I am ready! My reasons for doing this are purely healthy, I need to get my blood sugars back to normal so I can come off my meds as it’s been a bit hit and miss as I was in denial for the first 18 months of being diagnosed Type II and I have been threatened with Insulin if the next HBa1c test hasn’t come down and I really don’t want that to happen, so I’ve got three months before I have my test and I reckon I can do it. I have no illusions about how tough it is going to be for me but I need to do this and I know there are going to be “sod it days” where I will want to give in, but I have to keep my goal in focus and stay positive.

  • Go GemGem !!!

The scales are so encouraging about sticking at it. It will be slower after the first week shock – but it does keep going.

Have you got some midway goals that you can be ticking off on the way to the ‘gigantic goal’ you say you have set yourself? It is good to have milestones to celebrate along the way.

I’m in full agreement about the Lidl Turkish yogurt, it is lovely – really thick and creamy. I use this to kick my day off pretty much every day, adding various toppings to ring the changes. Only use between 80g and 90g of yogurt, but it keeps me feeling full until lunchtime.

Today I’m treating myself to a leaf salad with figs and goat cheese, dressed with olive oil and balsamic – yum!

Well done on yr weight loss! XX and i think you can maintain well or lose more by simply watching yr carbs..you may not even need to look at the cals as long as you Curb Your Carbs!x

Some of us lose much more slowly than others, so you have company. Hitting a plateau is very frustrating but seems to happen to most of us at some point. It will come right at some point though, so don’t despair. It’s worth reviewing you carb in take – when I plateaued it was because although I had kept to the 800 cals, the carbs had snuck up a bit.

I’m sure you will be posting some positive results soon, so stay focused and keep soldiering on.

ooo Lucky brilliant news about progress – and future plan all sounds v rational and logical! So great about it changing whole family’s way of thinking about eating/food too – they will SOOOOOO thank you when they are older!! Lots of us lose slowly Minnie so you are not alone! I seem to be lucky if I drop half a pound a week at the moment, but I’ll take all I can get. Seems you are doing well on the exercise front – much better than me, as this is an area I really struggle with. Keep drinking plenty of water, but remember to include enough fat, as this helps you feel full and to feel that way for longer. Maybe save a few calories for a little full fat yogurt in the evening, so you don’t have to go to bed feeling hungry.

Keep going and please keep us posted on your progress.

  • Day 6 of 800 calories a day is drawing to a close, and What an almost-week it has been! Here is my latest update tonight, because I can’t believe how much life has changed, and I have changed, in just six short days.
First of all – Hahaha that ChipsAhoy commercial is very cute, we don’t have them in Australia. Thankfully, one less thing to tempt me…
Thanks for your lovely message greenjanet ๐Ÿ™‚ Congratulations on sticking it out 9 weeks!! Very inspiring. And thank you too, Avila!

So at the end of Day 6, I have lost 4.4 kilos. Yep. Six days, 4.4 kilos. That is 9.7 pounds in six days.

Mind. Blown. I’ve never experienced such success on a diet in my whole life and i’ve been on so many diets! I have to admit that losing 4.4 kilos in just six days seems too good to be true so I weighed myself three times to make sure, then again three hours later, but its true. My first few days were not very easy I can’t lie. I was hungry and 800 calories a day is not for the faint hearted, at least not at first and I have discovered just how much planning and counting and measuring needs to go into each and every meal!!! But after six days, my hunger has changed completely. Now I don’t have cravings, not at all! I feel temptations, but tempted isn’t the same as I NEED THIS. I wanted, not needed. Different.

It has become very liberating! And it makes me feel like I’m getting control of my addiction to eating – my hunger is not driving me and i’m not thinking constantly about what I can eat, or what sugary coffees, hot chocolates, etc I will have, and i’m not missing at all my too-late mid-morning breakfasts of lattes and toasted ham cheese and tomato sandwiches with melted butter on top from the cafe downstairs from my office!! Who’d have thought. I want one but don’t crave one.

On wednesday I had a drinks/dinner event to go to which i was dreading, but I ended up doing really well! A vodka, lemon, lime and soda cocktail is only 80 calories, and I chose the roasted veggies with lemon ricotta from the menu, all in all including my vodka drink my dinner was only about 370-400 calories. Phew!!! I half expected myself to say “what the heck its a party, order what you like!”

I’ve been strict, i’ve not fallen off the wagon at all, it has been hard work in many ways but six days in, its becoming easier and easier. I’m in the habit now of writing in my food journal every meal, every ingredient and its calorific value (is that a word?). I’ve had the same breakfast three days out of the six and I made the same lunch twice but I’m trying not to be too repetitive because our bodies need more of a variety of nutrients so I’m mixing it up as much as possible, different vegetables, different protein sources etc.

So if anyone is reading this who is just starting or about to start and feeling daunted and overwhelmed like I felt, six days ago, with the thought of only 800 calories and with the thought “its so much effort!!!”, don’t be! It really does get easier and the feeling of momentum towards losing weight – moving towards the gigantic goal I set is So good!

Have a lovely start to the weekend everyone! ๐Ÿ™‚

  • What about something with lentils? I usually find them very filling and satisfying (and I have a very big appetite) ๐Ÿ™‚ I adapted this chicken and lentil curry a bit and it’s lovely (I add a little coconut milk for flavour and I didn’t add spinach, but I daresay it’s nice with spinach). And I tweaked the amounts so that it was around 380 cals per portion (using MyFitnessPal)
    http://www.deliciousmagazine.co.uk/recipes/red-lentil-and-chicken-curry/

Or you could make lentil soup, which is also very filling. Stews with beans and lots of veg are also filling – although with all of these I guess watch the carbs, but if you’re cycling maybe you’ll need more ๐Ÿ™‚
some nice ideas here you could tweak:
    http://www.dalepinnock.com/recipes/

I’d probably go for a hearty soup with beans or lentils before yr cycle and then a stew or curry with lots of veg and cauliflower rice after – or cauliflower mash with steak and vegetables is lovely and filling too, try this garlic cauliflower mash it’s lovely! http://nomnompaleo.com/post/1356203768/garlic-cauliflower-mashed-potatoes

Good luck, hope you find something nice

  • Just to say, Karen, you might give the 800 a try. For many people energy levels go up, not down – your body changes to get its energy not from refined carbs (with resulting bs spikes) but from fat.

So I would give the 800 a try – you should commit to say a week to give your body a chance to kick the carbs – and you may find that your energy levels increase! Mine certainly did!

    Hope that helps!

Just a quickie – I’m going to make a spelt loaf – for the children not us. Just had a talk to them all to tell them things were changing and that size wasn’t an indicator of health. Was very careful yesterday, went to bed hungry in spite of protein and veg for dinner BUT I was strong and scales this am said half a pound loss so better than nothing. Did drink a lot of water, 8 full glasses, but did not get rid of much so I am saying that there is a bit of water retention. It makes me feel happier.
Overslept this am so no time for 30 min gym session before Aqua class but did 45 mins there as usual and tried to work a bit harder.
Have not done many steps for the last 2 days as it is so dammed hot here in the south but am still focussed on the plan.
Please keep posting everyone. When I read of the fantastic losses some of you have made I am in awe. It also makes me feel a bit wimpy but don’t worry I am holding on to your coat tails and being dragged along.

Imogen – exactly how I felt. I’d been a mum from 19, got pregnant just as I was due to go to Uni, and things have always got in the way of that, other pregnancies, deaths in the family, personal issues. My youngest is 10 now, one more year til secondary and my oldest is about to hit 21. It is going to sound corny as hell, but I have no idea who I am any more? Other than mum, carer, housewife? Time for some me time. And some you time, by the sounds of it. 60 things might be a stretch, I know others who had 100 on their lists, I struggled to reach 30, but they don’t have to be big things mind? Ruth – the baps are here – https://www.dovesfarm.co.uk/recipes/spelt-bread?offset=1
It made 8 decent sized burger rolls, but if you wanted smaller ones, you could probably stretch it to 12? Really good too. I hope they freeze well. I want to make the bread for the children for the weekend. They will be a really good, but very occasional treat for me, and handy for long car journeys and days out. I’ve done so little with the children this summer purely because I’ve felt tied to my kitchen with this diet, and I feel really guilty about that.

54 – I am much more active now that I was, like Janey says, these newfangled devices help, a few of us duel regularly, unfortunately a foot issue has slowed me down this last week or so.
Mindfulness – for me, going from being a proper gluttonous greedy sod eating man sized plates of food, to having to stretch 800 calories over the course of a day? That in itself made me mindful – of what I was eating anyway. You can’t just mindlessly wolf your food down and not realise you’ve eaten any more, because there’s probably going to be so little of it now that you appreciate it more.
Other exercises, the HIIT? No, not once. 37lbs gone in 11 weeks. My husband – incidentally 54 if that’s your age too, started at 18 stone 4 and is 16 stone today in same time frame. 32 lbs. He hardly moved due to ill health, but he bought a Jawbone a few weeks ago and is now moving more. Just walk more ๐Ÿ™‚ Good luck!

Thanks Jan. I was getting concerned about me, believe me! Yes, we’re all different, and I do find that if we find our own way to do it, and it works, it’s best to just stick to it. Different needs, different problems, different metabolisms, different health issues, different lifestyles, different levels of exercise, these all play a part in the whole picture, not just how low we can get our carb count on a day to day basis. But – in saying that – for some people, it is just that, too! It really is that simple! Luckily for me, it’s not. UNluckily for me, it seems that I can’t drink wine ever again… ๐Ÿ˜‰

I think this is the way forward for me now, for now though, as I said, it’s something I have to keep reassessing as I go along, even on as short a time frame as a week to week basis. Maybe on weigh day. But I can’t go back to eating how I used to. The cake I had on holiday was too sweet. I don’t desire 99% of the things I used to eat any more. But the ones I do, I know I can make with almond flour, coconut flour, coconut oil, olive oil, flaxseed, besan… my kitchen cupboard is like bloody Paltrow’s! If I knew I could have – for example – a small homemade spelt base pizza once a week (and I mean small because the amount of food I can put away now is less than my youngest son) on a Saturday, I think I’d gladly be able to coast through the week on 800 – 1000 calories a day. I will still be counting calories, and I will still be sticking (mainly) to the list of allowed ingredients, swerving the higher stuff for the lower stuff when I can to get more bang for my buck. But the carbs, no – I can’t do that as well, not on so few calories. It’s driving me batcrap crazy. I’ve seen from my own data that some days it was 30, and some days it was 50 and that’s without trying to limit myself, just with what I wanted to eat on that day, so seemingly common sense alone let me make choices that let the carb total come in at a totally acceptable level. I appreciate that you need this at the moment, and it’s great that we live in a time that exists for us to have this information and these tools on hand so easily. Imagine trying to do this twenty, thirty years ago? ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

Yes, week 12 tomorrow. We’ll see how that goes and reassess in a week’s time. I may end up eating my words. I may not. But it feels right for me at the mo, and Mr Lucky too. Have a great weekend, I think I am being hauled out by the children as it’s the last one before school! And other sister in law is coming down to stay in her caravan so heavy duty cleaning ahoy too ๐Ÿ™

    Hi all,
I didn’t get chance to post yesterday’s results, too much going on at home, granddaughters came for day, three of them, had to sort out a hack on my M&S account, ยฃ250 taken from my account! Busy day otherwise, went to Birmingham to the ‘new’ library there, they had a great day! We all came back shattered, we walked miles.
However, now for yesterday’s weight and food etc.

Weight was 12.2.0 so well pleased with that, that’s 4oz lost making the total 3lb 8oz in total.

    Food,
Breakfast, portobello mushrooms, pine nuts and goats cheese,( my interpretation of the bsd recipe) and a cup of tea

    Hi lucky
I’m so pleased you have found a workable way forward for you, I was concerned about you, but doesn’t it just prove how we are all so very different for myself I find the structure of counting, measuring using mfp etc reassuring I couldn’t cope without hem at the moment, and wouldn’t have got where I am now without them but for you the absolute opposite, so delighted for you keep going we will all get there. Wishing you a great week love jan

    Hi nikkiD,
I suppose it depends on how you feel about yourself, like the others have said, weigh yourself every day, once a week, whatever makes you feel better about the diet, I weigh every day, then if I have lost it motivates me to do more of the same, if I have put on or stayed the same, I want to do better!
I also got told to up my fat intake if I wasn’t losing weight while keeping to the 800/50 principles!
    I hope that helps.
    Christine.

Good Morning Ladies and Gent(s) ๐Ÿ˜€

Ooh Yowzer, when do you actually get to your daughter’s to go and weigh? I bet you’re chomping at the bit, aren’t you? You’ve much more restraint that I have ๐Ÿ˜‰

Thank you Ruth, I just went on autopilot for it tbh (the catering) and not so on autpilot (the diet!). I said yesterday on another thread I think, that once we’ve done the 8 weeks its going to be something we need to assess on even a weekly basis at times. I was really gung ho at the start of week 9, I was definitely doing 8 weeks again, and that was that. But by this week, something changed in me (end of week 11 tomorrow). And the results I’ve had over the last couple of days have been staggering, since I decided to chill out slightly. However – I’m not diabetic, I’m doing this simply for the weight loss and the other health benefits that come with being smaller, more energy, less pain with less stress on the joints and hopefully – living longer. Everyone has their own path to travel, don’t they, for their own reasons? Those are mine.

Butterlover – glad your bathroom issue is sorted (that actually sounds worse than it is, hope people read your post properly haha). Most of us have snapped like that and if not, probably we will at some point. It could have been worse. If I’d snapped and done that 12 weeks ago it would have been a packet of biscuits and a multipack of crisps. Maybe it would have been for you too?

Jan, I’m afraid I haven’t been much of a worthy step dueller to you this week, I’m very sorry.

Well, my news. I posted yesterday that I had lost 0.9 kg and that I needed to lose exactly 1 kg to get back down to my pre-holiday weight. I figured that I’d give myself a week to do this, especially as I took the decision to relax a little on the plan now. It’s 2.2 lbs, it’s a decent weekly weight loss at this point. By relaxing I don’t by any stretch of the imagination mean reaching for the takeaway menus or Dairy Milk or things like that. But I still want to cook and I still want to bake, because that is what I’ve done for years and it’s hard to break a habit. People come to me because I’m the cook of my group and family. That’s my role in my world. Take that away from me, and I am very little else other than a Mum. At the end of the day I can only physically eat what I can now, and I eat until satisfied not stuffed because I despise that feeling of being bloated and unable to move. But I made my little healthy (ier!) crumble and I had a little portion after tea.

I made bread rolls yesterday. They were made with spelt flour. I don’t need to know if it’s allowed or not on the plan nor the carb count in it because I’ve done my digging and I know precisely what the N.I is on it and the health benefits/drawbacks, and I don’t care. Cooking with spelt is endorsed by Bowel Cancer Uk because it’s high in fibre, so I’m happy with my choice. They were a healthier choice for everyone than pulling a Warburtons white roll out of a bag, and they were absolutely lovely. My husband looked like he would marry me all over again when I presented his burger in the bun. My children, every single one of them, wolfed them down and declared them the best bread they’d ever tasted, and they turn their noses up at anything new. I’ve never made bread before. I’m going to make these, and the loaves, a few times a week for my children, so they are having a decent healthy bread that isn’t full of preservatives and additives.

And by this morning, I’ve lost a further 1.1 kg. I am now at my lowest that I’ve been on this WOE. Ok, only by a smidge, but I am at my absolute lowest now. Do I credit it with relaxing? Maybe. Do I advocate anyone else doing it? No, this is right for me and me alone. Maybe I wasn’t eating enough, as has been suggested twice. But I do know that – for me – things are now shifting along finally, and it all started going wrong for me when the ‘c’ word came into play. My weight loss was absolutely fine until I started stressing about bloody carbs and shoving things into MFP when I had successfully used the other ‘c’ word up to that point – common sense. If it ain’t broke and all that… That’s just my take on what’s happened to me. Some need to be more regimented. I didn’t. So I am still committed to getting healthy, but thankfully I can afford to take a more ambling, leisurely pace in doing so, with the occasional treat, because God knows the rest of my life rolls at such a frenetic pace that I don’t need to stress myself out unduly! And the minute any weight loss plan or way of eating becomes stressful or a chore? That’s when things are going to start going wrong. I think most of us can agree on that, from experience. It had started to become a chore for me. So I am taking it back to how I was doing it at the start. Common sense, with a few treats chucked in, made from healthier ingredients. Some allowed, some not. But there won’t be white flour or white sugar or crappy margarine or low fat things involved. I’ve managed to shift 37 lbs in 11 weeks doing it this way, so I’ve obviously been doing something right – for me, my life and my needs ๐Ÿ™‚

So – 15 stone I am on the final day of Week 11. Started at 17 stone 9 lbs. And I am thrilled to bits with that. I’m in the process of overhauling how my whole family eat now. Head off any problems before they begin. Everyone have a lovely Friday ๐Ÿ™‚ Hope the sun is shining for you too.

Have you MEASURED? Are you testing against clothes?

There is lots of experience here on the forum about weight slowing but measurements shifting. If you look me up in the search box you will find my thread about “not too much to lose but….”

So I would recommend a couple of things

See how the measurements are doing.
Weigh as often or as little as you need – don’t get attached to what the scales say, you are doing yourself good and you need to commit to the 8 weeks.
Divide your target into small chunks.

Also – how many carbs are you eating? Less that 50g per day within your 800 calories can kickstart the weight loss.

    Hope that helps.

  • Hi Karen

    I exercise already too.

I swim 3-4 times a week for 30 mins or more, but don’t feel its doing good and I am told by my GP Ill never lose weight by swimming’ so looking to do the fast exercise with this plan.

I am doing the 800 and I have NO disciple and will go ‘off piste’ badly with the 5 ‘off ‘ days.

    But fingers crossed for you

Hi 54, love your moniker! Actually exercise seems to have surreptitiously crept up on quite a few of us now we are feeling more healthy! The fitness apps and bracelets are making us all more aware of how much we move. I for one have benefitted massively from having the little bracelet nag me and try to walk for at least 30 mins a day, more even at weekends (previously I walked to my car and back!) I’ve even been inspired to raise money for charity on this basis. Specific mindfulness.. Not sure. A few of the ‘flock’ use yoga, for me just having quiet time with my OH as we wander in the evenings seems as therapeutic.. It’s about switching off from the day’s stresses and finding time to relax ๐Ÿ˜€

    Hi nikki
I weigh daily, and yes I did plateau, sometimes for days, sometimes weeks. I am on week 9 and lost 33lbs but I am sticking absolutely to it, I do not eat what isn’t permitted and I eat 50 and below carbs a day. But we are all very different, I had 104 lbs to loose when I started so my loss may be faster than those who only want to shift 20 lbs. I was also very ill prior to starting this plan so I had a huge motivator, which will now last the rest of my life as I have now turned around serious symptoms.
So do what’s best for you, if I stay the same or put on it motivates me, but if it demoralises you then perhaps weekly. Keep us posted.
    Regards jan
