Hi all. The 800 refers to 800 calories. You do need to count calories. In chptr 4 of the book Michael distinguishes between the fast starchy carbs like bread, flour, pasta, rice, white potatoes etc. Its not that you have to count bad carbs but you shouldnt base yr meals around them. (I personally treat them as ‘special occasion only or no more than once a week foods’). These are distinguished from good carbs which are important for both fibre and weight loss (most veggies, legumes, nuts etc) and which are fundamental to Mediterranean diets. I sometimes have quite high carb counts – but as long as they are “good carbs” and I stick within the 800 calories per day limit and keep up my good fat and protein Im still losing weight and it is coming off my waist where it needs to be coming from.
-
My husband is not officially doing the diet either but eating same as me – only larger portions. We are both enjoying different kinds of salads most days. I boost the fibre up with cold kumara and/or chick peas with a small portion of cold meat or smoked salmon or an egg. I always use a base of lettuce, cucumber & celery. Roasted red pepper is also a great addition. When the weather gets cool (still in the 30s in Sydney today) im planning to make hearty vegetable based soups for lunch. I dress with olive and lemon juice or vinegar and alternatively I use whole egg mayo (full fat).

Thx hashimoto. I feel like ive settled into a routine with the exercise (7 days of consecutive swimming but only started the diet on day 6) and i don’t wanna give it up especially after so many failed attempts to keep up an exercise regime.
Currently this is my meal plan
Protein rotation for dinner
Prawns, Tuna, Chicken breast (just stir fry with a little bit of garlic n olive oil)With a side of (1 cup)
Roasted cauliflower (very tasty my favorite)
Carrots, capsicums, cucumber, tomatoes and leafy greens.Lunch is tofu stir fry with mix veges or tuna with the side of veges.
A few strawberries for an emergency snack. At most 3.
Breakie has been 2 hard boiled eggs and 100 grams of cherry tomatoes. A cup of ceylon tea no sugar no milk obviously.
Im looking at the self made baked beans recipe here looks very tasty.
Am i on the right track? I need more recipes for breakkie but i love eggs so i think im happy just egging it different ways.
-
yes, hashimoto, i reckon i’m a bit intolerant… i also think my body is now thanking the hell out of me for losing all the bread! ๐ better hit the sack or there’ll be bags under my eyes tomorrow… ciao.

Hashimoto, I am glad that I am not becoming a” taste freak” after all:-)…. When I bought this new one today, I never thought about looking at the ingredients, but I remember someone telling me that there is actually a toothpaste for diabetics? What does this mean? Do all the so callled normal ones, have that many sugary things in them that it could have a negative impact for diabetics… That sounds horrendous and outrageous, it this would be true. I will have a look at the ingredients as well…. What kind of reply did Lynne get? and what can they do, not much I suspect, they wont change their recipe for a handful of people … and they probably dont care … Hope I dont have to go back to the future and use “charcoal” instead ๐ lol! A horrible thought just cane into my mind…. When I was really little, my mum used a kiddie. proof toothpaste, I guess to get me used to brushing my teeth, I still remember that the paste was pink and tasted like strwaberries. My sister and I often used to squeeze the whole contents of a tube into each others mouths… We ate the stuff, by the tube full, and naturally this made my mum really angry. Silly little kids…we were ๐

Hi orchid because barley and rye contain gluten I can’t eat barley.
My mother used to use ham shanks to make glorious soups packed with veg, barley and other pulses, ooh I’m salivating now. ๐

Hmm… I’m trying to understand th calorie and carbs limit. Sometimes carbs high and calories are low. Eg rockmelon. Not sure which to count, any help appreciated. I’m only 2 weeks in have lost 3 kgs but now plateauing. Is it the carbs?
-
Bizzylizzy, I guesstimate about 15-20g carbs per thin slice of my bread, based on what I can find on google.
Orchid I started using spelt and rye because of their lower GI values, but I know some people spike on them. My mum is 82 and won’t give up bread, so I set out to make a loaf that wouldn’t spike her and after much experimentation to find one that she liked, the recipe above was it! It doesn’t spike me either so I indulge in a bit now and then.
Edit: I should also add that my mum is underweight and has age-onset diabetes, still in early stages and managed by diet. She just won’t give up bread and as she’s underweight her dr recommended trying higher fibre bread. She doesn’t like flat rye bread.

on 2 Apr 2016 at 12:07 in Welcome to the BSDThanks for the welcome annie68 and SunnyB.
annie68, well done on your 20 day 19lb weightless thus far excellent.
My doctor says I have 34lbs/ 15kg/2.5stone. to lose and get to a healthy weight for my build and height….we’ll see. I will be happy when my waist size is not the same as my 6ft1″partner.
SunnyB, looking forward to not craving carbs, the testing time for me will be going back to work after a week off this Wednesday, there are carbs everywhere, my work mates are very generous with that poison. I’ll need to prepare well to avoid temptation or become antisocial and leave when the home baking, biscuits, easter chocolates are freely distributed and the MothersPride bread is toasted, buttered and shared. Salivating at the thought of it.

Hi 14kg, I just wondered with the current lack of bloating if you are slightly gluten intolerant as I blow up like a balloon with just a trace of gluten – not coeliac just very intolerant. ๐
-
Hi justdoit
I’d say that perhaps because you had already lost weight – a big chunk – this year, you kind of missed out on the initial big weight loss that many people experience on a new diet. So it seemed like something was wrong for you. But it wasn’t wrong, you just hit a plateau that many people hit after a few weeks. Sticking to the menu plans is entirely up to you but I haven’t used any of them myself. My own weight loss has been modest compared to others but massive compared to myself and my previous efforts. You are already keeping your carbs low, don’t skimp on the fats though as they really do help. Sometimes we do just need a bit of renewed zest to get us going again and it sounds like you’ve got. Looking forward to hearing about your successes. All the best.
-
Handofgods if you are keeping toned with exercise and stick to 800 you will get some rapid results!
Some people just count carbs not calories.
You could do a few weeks of fast 800 then switch to carb counting only
At the end of the day it is up to you and what you are happy with ๐

Hi all. Im also an Ozzie from Sydney. Just want to encourage Jillyb and anyone who cant manage very much exercise. That is me too. I have multiple health issues and have been mostly sedentary for many years (even more than usual since beginning of 2016 due to different conditions flaring up). When Prof Roy was on ‘Insight’ with Michael a few weeks ago I recall him saying that it was not advisable to commence a new exercise program when you start trying to lose weight. Just get the food side right and shed the weight first. That is enough to deal with to begin. Michael also said in the book that moving can be very helpful and exercise is great for maintaining – but not for losing. So ironically, I’m just trying to eat my way out of trouble to begin! I also suffer chronic pain so I can empathise with your situation Jillyb. What I try to do is if I’m having a bad day with pain I don’t try to exercise. I just rest if that’s what I need. On some other days when the pain is not as bad or it doesnt last as long, that is when I try to move a bit more than the other times. In short – just do what you can, when you can – even if it is just standing up or changing position a bit more often. We dont have to be gym junkies or marathon runners to get great results. (I’ve lost more than 8kg in less than 7 weeks!) Good luck Jillyb and all the other Ozzies. Its great to do something positive for our health. that we can control. Oi oi oi!

Bill i adore barley and would still put it in soups but because I am so gluten intolerant I simply can’t eat it any more, sob, sob ๐

Hi Lostgirl
Having done this diet for the last seven weeks – and loved it – I’d say please don’t get caught up in all the big weight loss stories. I have lost weight but not in huge amounts like some others. But I think of it like this, in order to get average weight losses of 14kg in 8 weeks (thats what the book claims) there has to be some people above that average and some people below it. Not everyone will achieve big losses, nor do they need to. Day 2 is way to early to be worrying. Your body is still trying to decide what to do about this new turn of events. Give yourself a break and give the programme a chance to work, even for the health benefits, its very early days. Keep going, you will see results soon.

Hello all!
Im from victoria! Am on day 2 of of bsd 800 and feeling pumped to lose some weight and try and reverse the scourge of my life that is T2 diabetes.
One question that i feel seems unanswered is im currently also burning 600 cals swimming daily and eating 800 cals. Should i eat back some calories? The severe reduction is scaring me and I’m reading different responses. Some say yes. Some say no.
-
Bill, you will be sylph like at this rate. Congratulations ๐

Hi justdoit,
You aren’t doing anything wrong!!! You’ve lost a total of 3 inches so obviously you are on the right track. You’ve also improved your asthma and arthritis. These are real, measurable, outcomes for you and proof that things are heading in the right direction. So well done. ๐
Your cal/ carb intake is great. You’ve just hit what I call the week 2 blues. So many people post no weight loss, or a gain, around week 2 or 3. Not sure why this happens but obviously some readjustment happening with your metabolism around this time.
Keep going, don’t get discouraged. Make sure you keep your fluids up around the 2-3 litre a day you’re currently having, and I’m sure you’ll be posting a good loss this time next week. -
Inka i find the same about toothpaste,so much so I have decided to check out the toothpaste ingredients. If I don’t like what I see I will take a leaf out of lynnes book and write to the manufacturers ๐

Today’s plan is
L – haggis with a baked egg
D – mackerel with chargrilled aubergine, courgette & peppers -
Hi patsy,
No worries, just think that you have taught yourself the right way to do things.
A loss is still a loss.
Have you actually felt the weight of a pound? Eg apples?
That is some weight loss.
You were on holiday or away.
And you did what the doctor ordered.
Doctor Mosley said in his book, a little wine.
Positive thoughts
Love Lucia

hey Hashimoto

posted by Venusflytrap on What carb level should we be aiming for?
on 2 Apr 2016 at 11:41 in Fast 800Thank you every one for your replies about the carb levels. We have read the book 2/3 times but just couldn’t seem to find out what it should be. The perils of reading it on kindle rather than as a book, perhaps! I know that Atkins aims at 30g of carbs, but now the Dr has gone, they seem to be allowing more carbs in later stages. Thanks Bill1954 for the info about aiming for 50g of carbs for ketosis. Is there any variation in that for size? I am literally half the weight of Sweetheart and wonder if I should be aiming for less than him either kcal wise or carb wise. I only need to lose between a half stone and a stone, as I am already within my BMI range but aiming for the half way mark. Whereas he needs to lose about 7 stone. I am also concerned about the longer term effects of ketosis, in particular gout and kidney problems. So if anyone has found good research on these issues, I would appreciate a nudge in the right direction. I will share any that I find.
Thanks for all the supportive comments. Given me much to think about. Hope you are all having a good weekend. -
They’re gorgeous! I don’t like prawns thawed but not recooked, they’re a bit too strange and squidgy. The coconut oil is lovely with these and the spices I use are just a bit of fahita or Cajun seasoning (have to watch those seasonings because they sometimes have sugar in).
-
Thanks Judith and Bill, I feel like we are good friends too, just separated by distance. I know you ‘get’ me, and I appreciate your support and humour.
I’m giving up on the lupin flour experiments Judith. I was trying to create a decent gluten free bread that was low carb but really didn’t come up with anything I’d be proud to post. I’ve got one last attempt on the go at the moment using yoghurt as a kind of sourdough starter, with a slow overnight prove. If that doesn’t work I’m going to try a millet/ coconut flour combination. I’ll need to use eggs and I’ll try the natural yoghurt again. I fancy a nice chewy sourdough type rustic loaf. Will let you know how it goes.
I’m quite excited to think of how Lynne’s family will get a lovely surprise at how much slimmer and fitter she is. Those FBS are fantastic too. Sounds like everyone’s had a good week results wise, despite the Easter weekend. ๐ -

on 2 Apr 2016 at 11:32 in Welcome to the BSDLike the post shortapple! Welcome on board – you’ve made a great choice. Like the rest of us, you will soon be seeing results. I wish I had found this diet in my mid forties, but I’m grateful for it even if it is 15yrs late!
As annie68 says, there is lots of support and advise on the forum and it’s certainly helped carry me through a couple of times. You will find that your pallet will quickly adjust and you won’t want carbs and the hunger pangs will lessen. Shout out if you need anything – someone will respond.
Look forward to reading your results soon.

on 2 Apr 2016 at 11:32 in Fast 800Mylife, you are being even more organised than we are. We have planned our meals following the guidelines roughly and then added them up afterwards to see where we are on kcals. We tend to include 2tsp of oil per day as a minimum. And we have bought lots of veg and lean protein on our weekly shopping trip. So not very organised just drifting in the right direction. Our protein portions tend to be around or slightly under the 100g mark. Then we have piled our plates with veg and have learned that way which are best low carb value. I am now learning to give up low fat dairy in favour of smaller amounts of full fat. So I guess we are tweaking something new every day, like you are. I am trying to think of it as a journey rather than a once and for all change. But our results have been better in days than our previous attempts at dieting in weeks. So will stick with it.
-
I’ve managed three days without toast and vegemite – that is seriously an achievement for me. And no weetbix either. I am hungry, I’ll admit it. But weirdly as long as I focus on the losing-weight aspect of it, it feels sort of okay. My family had gluten free fish and chips tonight for dinner (not a regular occurrence) and I didn’t even have a single chip. god i’m good! hehehehe… I got grilled ‘naked’ salmon which turned out tiny (weighed it, was 115g!) and virtually inhaled it covered in lemon juice and pepper. yuuuuum. incredibly, every day i’ve woken up i’ve dropped over a kilo – 1.5 on the first day, 1.2 on the second, will be interesting to see if i’m down another kilo tomorrow morning. crazy stuff. feel less bloated despite the hunger. yesterday got the shakes when i had left lunch too long. but i’m not doing anything very fancy – plan on having sardines tomorrow for lunch with tomato and mushrooms which shd take about 5 mins to prepare ๐ best wishes to all
-
Oh yes! I can’t trust myself around potato crisps, and for the first time ever I have managed to not buy them since starting the BSD. We just have to get to know our triggers, I suppose!

good evening Hashimoto,
No, neither of those….I live in an apartment. But I guess this is just the same being all on one floor. Been here 2 years and my last place was 2 stories, and like you I had to go up and down stairs to use the bathroom. However this is one of the reasons we had to move. Thank you for your concern. I’m off to bed now and will weigh myself in the morning.
Good night -
I’ve just posted a similar question did you use the noodles with success?

Well done Bruno, Lynne, Bill and Inka. Seems like the week for great results for you all. ๐

posted by SunnyB on 800 calories per day or 5600 calories per week
on 2 Apr 2016 at 11:16 in Welcome to the BSDWelcome to the BSD alexginda. I think most of us work on trying to keep to 800 per day, but as the diet is meant to be an 8wk period, MM actually says there will be days you are over and days you are under, but over the period it will balance itself out.
I certainly try to stick with 800 a day, but also calculate at the end of the week my overall calories and how that averaged out per day, as there are days when I am over and days I am under. At the moment this week, I am averaging 885 per day, as we ate out last night, which means I need to have quite a lean couple of days to balance things out by the end of the week.
Not sure I have answered your question, but hope it helps.
-
Thanks for your replies and encouragement Bill1954, Hashimoto & Pmshrink and all who commented on their changing sense of taste &/or smell. Congrats Bruno on your great results too. Its so gr8 to be digging out my size smaller clothes. (Glad I didnt toss all of them out.) I’m promising myself some new clothes when I reach my goal. Then im throwing out all the fat clothes! Do others celebrate or reward themselves when they reach their weigh in milestones?

Welcome………..I have only just joined and there are some great people on here to help and support you on the way.
I’m on day 20 and have lost 19lbs so far but I am huge so it comes off abit quicker!!
I felt really cold in the first week but it wore off.
Good luck with it and if you need support there are people on here who will always help. -
How about a deli platter – choose from a selection of cold meats, cheeses, smoked salmon, roll mop herring, hummus, tomato and onion salad, you can have it with gem lettuce and he can have crusty bread. You can pick and mix, keep to you cals and carbs and he can have what he pleases.

on 2 Apr 2016 at 11:06 in Welcome to the BSDI have been successfully following 5:2 and record my food intake online. I keep to the 500 cals per day for women on fast days and to my TDEE on feast days and so far lost 20 lbs quickly and have kept if off. I still enjoy doing one fast day each week. When I know I’m going out for a special occasion I eat less the day or so before and that is how I maintain. Just started BSD so I am also trying to keep below 50g carbs per day.
Do you have to stick to 800 calories per day? Has anyone tried working to 5,600 calories per week?
-
Redskin peanuts – love them. I’m actually wondering if I’m going to have to stop purchasing ‘nuts’ unless for a particular recipe/meal. I don’t trust myself:) I had to do the same with Meridian nut butters! Gosh. They are SO dangerous to have access to.
Ha HaX
-
Well done everyone – seems like you’re making great progress.
I haven’t …
I’ve been away for a few days – self catering so I was able to stick with the diet … in theory anyway! I *might* have drunk some wine and eaten a slice of bread and forgotten to count calories. I have lost 1lb. Not as much as I’d like, but not a disaster.
-
Interesting re. chilling salad – I couldn’t fit my greek salad (tomatoes, onion, cucumber, feta and olive oil) for lunch in the fridge yesterday and it tasted so much nicer than when chilled.
Hashimoto thanks for the tip re. small containers for nuts – it’s one of those common sense things that I forget to do!
Deb, I got some redskin peanuts (raw) and they make a good choice for hunger/craving moments as they are quite difficult to scoff fast and you feel content quickly with them. I’ll still use a small container though!
-
I’m finding it difficult to come up with lunch options which my husband will eat too. My chances of sticking to the diet are much better if he eats mostly the same things, which he’s willing to do if I can keep it interesting. Soup and omelettes are fine, but that will soon get boring.
-
I’m not frightened to use barley because from day 1 I’ve been knocking up pans of soup, stews, and broths to portion out for lunches and every one of them has contained barley.
When used like that a little goes a long way and barley has many health benefits. -
Hello, everyone! I took everyone’s advice and weighed myself this morning, instead of the usual once a week, which would have been Monday… So, to my greatest delight, I have lost 1.2kg in 5 days! I am really happy, so now very keen to get on the scale on Monday to see it tell me something even more favourable. With this lastest weigh-in I also finally cracked the 90kg barrier, not by much, but it’s below this mark: 89.8kg. I am ashamed to say that I have not been below 90kg for years, so very happy.
I also bought the Ketostix, but have not used them yet and more goodies for rest of the weekend, food-wise. Had fresh prawns with red slaw salad with a little bit of creamy herb and lime dressing and for desert two table spoons of full fat greek joghurt, 3 strawberries, a handful of blueberries topped with a few pine nuts… Oh, and I bought some green leaf tea based flower and peppermint liquorice tea…. Hhm, so delicoius.
I think my tastebuds are really changing: brushed my teeth last night and got a shock that the usual toothpaste I have always used suddently tastes kind of sweet, very soapy and like a real chemical cocktail. Bought new toothpaste when I was out and about, because there is no way I can continue to use the old one, truly terrible. Has enyone else experienced that? -
You shouldn’t need to count carbs if you’re following the recipes in the book as they contain very few carbs. If you’re subsituting different foods which are high in carbs, that could be why you’re not losing weight yet.
-
Welcome to the party Cherrianne, your support on the forums has been brilliant, long may it continue.
Lynne, you give us all something to aspire to, hope your family is bowled over at the sight of you.
