Hi Switzerland.
Do you still measure everything or do you do what I do.
You know what the average bowl of broccoli costs in calories and carbs.
Do you use protein every day or , like me have a few days just veggies?
I think it is great that we have all read the book, but we execute it in a million variations.
I am thinking of doing the captain Lynn version from June. By the book. Strict.
I think she is a wonderful role model.
I love my blubber but I feel it needs its independence, it needs to go out into the world and just be.
I need to see how I can live without blubber. We love each other but we can’t live with each other any longer.
I have a few photos, to remember it by.
So on Wednesday, I shall be captain, Sorry, no to presumptuous of me. Midshipman Lucia.
Ah har me hearties. Come on ship mates, I challenge every last land lubber (or is it land lover) of you to all wear and eye patch and sellotape a plastic parrot on your shoulders and join me.
If you don’t, some of you will walk the plank.
Our rations will be maggot infested ships biscuits and a bucket of rum per meal.
Yes, we need the maggots for protein.
You there ! Stow that rope immediately!
Any backchat and you will take a turn in the crows nest.
Look lively!!!!!!!!!

Yay! 9st 13lbs this morning….8 lbs gone of my target 20-22lbs. Depending where you start counting from (I had a relatively small amount to lose, and didn’t really focus on cutting the carbs until a week and a half in), I think this loss has taken me just 2.5 weeks.
Enjoying it all …although some intensive gardening put me in a spin yesterday and I fell off the wagon slightly, snacking on baby plum tomatoes, an apple, and I think about 6 nuts. In my view that doesn’t really count as a fail…….bit like wavering and pulling myself back on!
*waves* to another recycled teenager π
Who says we’re past it at 60!π
Have you read “When I am old I will wear purple”? I love itπ
Thank you California Girl, I appreciate your encouragement very much. It’s good to hear from someone who is much further down the track than I, who has experienced the plateaus but pushed on through. I shall keep on going, as I realise it isn’t just about weight – it’s about health and beating the metabolic syndrome and helping my liver and pancreas too. So many benefits to be had. It’s just confusing when your body seems to be defying the laws of physics.
With regards to the power generation service, I’ve already been contacted by my local power supplier, and they’re sending around someone to hook me up to a pylon shortly. π
Thank you again & well done on your own journey. 12 weeks! Amazing!
Happy you are doing an amazing job of staying on track on your trip! Well done!!
I’m pleased you will be able to do the things you have held back on soon too.
I expect to stay off most carbs indefinitely as well. I enjoy the alternatives I’ve found with different low carb flours so I will likely just stick with those. I will have carbs on occassion I’m sure but it will be the exception rather than the rule.
Keep on having a great time π
Well done FifiP you must feel fantastic! Enjoy your holiday.
Lucia and Switzerland,I am finding your messages helpful. Love how Lucia is no living the life.
Whoa knit yourself thin, you’ve done wonderfully so far — don’t worry — it is the old fat cells hanging on with their fingernails as your body starts to adjust to the new food intake (they are pesky Devils) — I hit many plateaus so far in my twelve weeks but they passed and they will pass for you too. Ignore them. Carry on. Draw a veil over them. Stay on track — you’ve got this. By the way, in the meantime, could you plug into my power grid π? Save me a lot of money!!ππ
I know what you mean!! I feel better and lighter than I have in years and I have always said I always feel 17!!!
Ha!
Here’s to we 60 somethings in our teens!!

Wow that’s amazing re your picking up all those items. I think I would have declined. Not ready to put myself in that situation yet.
I, like you, don’t plan to add the carbs back once I lose weight. I feel that would just get me back where I was or bring back the crazy cravings that made me think about food all day long which I no longer do. What a waste of time that was eh? This makes life so easy and I now spend that time either doing things now or planning what I will be able to do in the future.
Sounds like we have the same plan – great to have someone walking the same path. π
Hugs and wishing you the best always!

Hello webbj54! Three pounds in a week is brilliant! If you were on a regular diet, you might lose one pound per week — you are 3X that! The first couple of weeks can be so frustrating because it is often slow, sometimes up and down, we are adjusting to a whole new way of eating and our bodies are asking us to go back to where they had become “comfortable”. It sort of seems like our brains are moving into a new space but our bodies have to play “catch up”. Just don’t give up. It WILL work for you, as it has for so many. I always say, just suspend your critical thought patterns for a couple weeks — we have a tendency to evaluate immediately — at the end of one week we don’t have enough “data points” to know if it is working or not!π
Yeah Lynne!! We are doing well on our planning during our travels!! So glad and we can support each other from afar as well!
Hugs and happy travels!

Hi There,
I know this topic has been covered a few times before, but I’m posting because I’m a bit frustrated and a bit confused as to how this can physiologically occur. I’m someone who at my current weight would need around 2,400 calories per day to maintain that weight (a lot I know). Given i am sticking by the rules and following the diet to the letter, I don’t quite understand how the scales have not budged in the last 3 days. Are the people who say you can ruin your metabolism by going on a VLCD right? How is it possible that someone consuming a third of the calories they need isn’t burning something off their body? Where am I getting my energy to even type this complaint?
Is there a medical person associated with this program looking at these posts? I’d love to hear from them if they are. I realise that this program isn’t all about weight loss, but I am really just a bit flummoxed. Am I abnormal? Can I be sucking energy out of the air just through breathing? Should I be connected up to the National Grid in order to provide free energy to the nation?
Thanks to anyone who bothers to read this and respond. I’m sure we’re all going through the same stuff. Hope it’s going brilliantly for you all.
P.S. Just so this isn’t all complaining, I’ve lots 4.6kg in the 12 days & my blood sugar is down to 4.9mmol/L.
Hi Californiagirl!
Thanks very much for your upbeat message! I’ll have a look for the book you mention.
How helpful. π x
Well done HappyLifeπ
What an achievement. Losing weight while travelling!
Like you, I’ve decided not to try adding carbs back in – even when I reach my target weight.
The friends I’m visiting next week asked me to take, among other things, English Muffins, crumpets and pikelets π± For the first time in ages I had to go to the bakery aisle in not one, but two supermarketsπ± But mission accomplished. π I only bought what they asked for, and I’ll not be eating any of them!
Thanks HappyLife π
I’ll be 66 in a few weeksπ± But still feel 19π
And feel better than I’ve done in many a long yearππ
Hi Davena, it sounds like you are off to a great start — don’t worry about the early days and ups and downs — overall in a few weeks it will all come together and you will see results. I know it is frustrating, so maybe weigh less often, use a tape measure instead and just don’t ever give upπ! I have made this recommendation many times, my favorite book on carbs is by Gary Taubes “Why We Get Fat” — it is an excellent primer on the science behind carbs and weight gain and has a very good guide for reducing carb intake to a very low number (20 grams per day). I found it hugely helpful. Best wishes as you move forward
Thanks HappyLifeπ
I changed my hotel reservation near Heathrow for Tuesday night from bed and breakfast to room only. Why? Breakfast was from 6am and I’d have had to eat very quickly to get to the airport. And I’ve saved around Β£25, more than enough to buy breakfast after going through security.
Plans for the journey to the hotel have also changedπ³ Instead of going straight from Kings Cross to Heathrow, now I’m going from Kings Cross to Elephant and Castle, then to Heathrowπ± I had thought of buying something for my evening meal at Kings Cross (hotel restaurant obviously expensive and there’s not really anything that I fancy or can eat when I checked out the menu). So I’ve bought some sliced meat, might add a boiled egg and/or salad, to take in a cool bag. I don’t eat much these days, and get a ‘nervous tummy’ when I’m travelling so didn’t see the point in eating at the airport the night before flyingπ³ But I will get a cooked breakfast after security, then only drinks on the flight.
We all seem to be finding solutions that fit our individual lifestylesπ We all know that one size never fits all LOL
Forgot to add
Week 5 day 2
Lost 18.1 lbs
Lost 25.25 inches
Hi Switzerland,
Thanks,
It’s sounds as if you really mix it all up. And such a variety.
Others reading may get some good ideas from the list too.
I am getting more energetic but my blubber seems to love me too much to leave me.
I sometimes get disheartened by it with so much effort, but then I say, I hate numbers and scales, do a lot of growling in the bathroom. The scales cower in my presence.
Then I do something weirdly crazy like tap dance.
Somehow it makes me feels a bit better.

Week 5 day 2
Well I couldn’t post for a couple days as we had no internet or phone service on the California central coast while traveling there.
Last week (week 4) I only lost .5 lbs but still lost 1.75 inches! I think since I still had major tummy issues my body wouldn’t let me lose weight and was hanging on as I was getting dehydrated as well.
Tummy has been good for 2 days and I dropped a pound today! I have lost 18.1 pounds which is amazing. I weigh less than I have weighed in over 5 years plus. I don’t even remember being this low before for so long.
Yes, I have a LOT to lose and will be doing this for a long while before transferring to 5:2 but I am good with that honestly.
This program is so simple once I learned what to eat. Of course having tummy issues means I am even more restrictive with things but it’s all worked out well.
What I cannot do ever is play the carb game as I call it. It would mess with my head and waste life’s precious moments for me. I just can’t do it. If I was worried about adding back in bread or pasta or anything of my old ways, even in non gluten or carb format, it would make me crazy and I feel it would be one quick step to falling off the cliff and be back to eating whatever I wanted with carbs. It doesn’t help me focus on or achieve my goal. So I don’t do it.
This is so simple. I just have to follow it. And if I can do it for 4 weeks and 2 days and even while traveling and switching hotels in 7 towns I can do it anywhere.
My best tip for travel that’s worked well for us is to carry a small cooler bag and we go to the grocery store and get smoked salmon, berries, and grapes. Each morning we have a little
for breakfast and then it keeps us full till dinner when we eat out and have fish and vegies.
We ask each hotel to put a real fridge in our room for medical needs (my foods) and they do it without issue since the typical fridges don’t get cold enough to keep food safe.
It’s been a really great trip on the program only because we planned and figured out what would work. We only pick restaurants that serve what we now call “clean fish” meaning it’s just grilled or broiled or pan seared without flours.
Shockingly a restaurant last night serving artichoke hearts advised they put flour in the water they boil them in!! I mean who would ever think that? They were so kind to tell me!
Being careful and staying in it isn’t daunting as it only means I now care about myself. I care about winning this battle and not letting carbs rule my world. Every day I am winning the battle. Every day I feel better, am getting smaller, and can do more activitiesβ£
One town we were in, Morro Bay, is so cute and we are planning to stay a week and go kayaking maybe next year. I am already planning fun things to do when I feel I will be able to better move
my thinner body! I also plan to go to Disneyland! We love Disneyland and haven’t been for years since I was worried about fitting on the rides. By next year or maybe later this year I will be able to go.
I am able to walk 5000 steps without issue which is HUGE for me as I have a funky knee. My Fitbit helps be keep it real and I love knowing I went more than I thought I could. It’s fun.
Well off for another adventure today!
Wishing you all the best, thanks for reading and I hope my personal notes somehow give you inspiration and strength that you can keep going and do it as well.

Yes, I know – it should be 24 weeks, but I’ll be away on holiday next weekend. I’m not sure about Internet connection where I’ll be, so am opening this clubhouse a week early. Hope nobody minds the early opening!
Today I’ve lost another 2 pounds, making a total of 60 pounds. My fasting blood this morning was 4.2 (I no longer test every day as it seems to have stabilised in normal levels).
For the record, and for those interested in such things, my measurements when I started on 19th December were (in inches) 50:49:54.5π± Today they are 42:36:43. My dress size has dropped from approx 24. Now I’m in size 16 tops and 18 bottoms, though will very soon be needing size 14 tops and 16 bottoms.
The medics have always said I should be around the 9 stone 7 pound mark, so that means I still have 32 pounds to go.
The prospect of losing 6.5 stone (91 pounds) was always daunting. During years of painfully slow weight loss at various slimming clubs the goal was never really in sight because of time it was taking.
But on the BSD I really can now see the finishing line drawing closer. π It’s still a long haul. A marathon. But I committed to this for however long it takes.
So, this new clubhouse is officially open and I look forward to meeting you here βοΈππ»π
Ah thanks Sandie, that’s sweet of you to say!! Stay on it – it’s amazing how it works isn’t it?
Hugs!

Wow I am so happy for you and feel proud to know you honestly. Thank you for continuing to share your inspiring path – I can’t tell you how reading your posts inspired me each morning!
Not only are you doing it, you have done it! 60 lbs! Go girl!! Yeah I am over 60 but we are all still girls at heart! π
Week 4 weigh in
17.5 lbs lost
25.25 inches lost
Doing super well and seem to finally have tummy issues under control.
Traveling for 2.5 weeks as carrying a small cooler with smoked salmon, berries, and grapes with us and asking all hotels for a legitimate small fridge for medicine. (We consider my food needed medicine as it’s keeping my health better). It’s a simple accommodation hotels offer if you ask since there in room fridges are for keeping drinks cool and not cold enough or food.
We’ve been eating breakfast of about 2oz smoked salmon and 20 berries or grapes and then eating dinners out at a restaurant sticking to fish and vegies.
The first week I only lost .5 lb traveling but now that my tummy stopped going nuts I lost another pound since yesterday. I think my soybeans so stressed it wouldn’t let me drop weight.
Doing good, feel excited, and the plan is super easy to follow now.
One thing I don’t even try to do at all is play with typical carbs (bread, crackers, pasta). If we are offered any we politely decline. For me, if I tried to play with the carbs it would be like another carb addiction and I would waste life’s precious time playing mind games with myself instead of just admitting I can’t have them and don’t need them. For me that’s easier and the best route.
Wishing you all the best! π
I cannot change the emphasis on myfitnesspal to carbs and so I think I will buy a book to help me. Can anyone recommend a simple and easy to follow book which allows me to count carbs and calories, please?
Great job Alan! Switzerland! and CaptainLynne 60 lbs!!!
Just imagine lifting that up and carrying it around!
You all deserve a huge round of applause so take your bows!!
Thank you for posting and all your inspiration!!

Hi captainlynne!
Thank you!! VERY useful advice. I will act accordingly! π
Hi everyone. Two pounds gone this week, making a total to date of 60 pounds.
I’m going on holiday on Tuesday so will be away next weekend, when I’ll have completed week 24 so I’m opening the new clubhouse at week 23. Hope nobody minds the early openingπ See you over there π
Hi Izzy!
I had no internet or phone on the central California coast so couldn’t get online. I see you are playing the “I want carbs and am gonna have them somehow” game still which I just can’t do. Good for you if it all works out and you can still reach your goal for your weight and BS. For me I know if I go over at all the cravings will kick back in and I want to reach my goals as quickly as possible for my health. ππ
I am super careful and still keeping carbs around 30 every day. Down 18 lbs now in 4 wks and 1 day as dropped another one today. Although you congratulated me for 22 lbs that was someone else who has lost that in 7 weeks I believe.
We did add 1/2-1 cup of boiled potatoes the last two days as our carbs were two low just having fish and vegies and we felt it.
Still on the trip another full week and we are now carrying a cooler with smoked salmon, berries, and grapes for our breakfasts and then eat dinner out each day.
Today we are meeting up with my cousins in Ojai who are down from Florida. Never been there but my cousin picked a restaurant with food I can eat.
For our 18th anniversary we splurged and got an ocean view room with a super nice pool at a hotel and swam for 2 hours yesterday. I am always the biggest person at the pool but we don’t care. We just get in and have fun and everyone else can worry about how they look. Ha
Oh, what’s your travel blog??? I am excited to see it and have a couple hours in the morning each day as I get up about two hours earlier than my husband.
Hugs to you and once I am down to normal weight I will have you help me as to how to make crackers and such.
Wishing you the best always!!
π
Two pounds gone this week. Total now 60 pounds.
Hi Gabby. Well done. I’ve just finished 23 weeks on the 800 calories and still have weight to lose so will be continuing on this for a while yet.
Hi Davena. Many of us have reduced our carbs to around 30g per day. You may wish to try reducing your carbs and see what happens. Remember, low carb, lots of water, and full fat products.
Some folk on here have had great success by only watching carbs and not counting calories.
Oh sorry. The ‘table’has shifted and become all jumbled up!!
I have been keeping a tally of my calories on ‘myfitnesspal’ but I see that my carb intake is still quite high. Yesterday my calorie intake was 882…..
Totals 882 91 55 19 796 58
Your Daily Goal 800 110 27 30 2,500 27
Remaining -82 19 -28 10 1,703 -30
Calories Carbs Fat Protein Sodium Sugar
and yet my carb total was 91.
What should my carb total be? And should I watch my carbs more than my calories? I didn’t think so, but what should the highest amount of carbs per day be?
I’m asking because according to my scales I have put ON half a pound in three days. π
(Admittedly, I do no exercise due to being told to keep off my feet as I have a suspected fracture in one foot. X-ray on Monday! But even so, I had thought that sticking to 800 calories i would lose. Yesterday was a slight blip but I didn’t go TOO far over the 800.)
Hi Happy Life. I have been reading your journal
and you impress me. Keep at it lovely lady.
Good afternoon webbj54, one step at a time. Before you know it you will be “running” with this programme.
Hi Gina,
How am I doing now you ask?
I am still as crazy as ever. Maybe more.
Today I have been pretending to do tap dancing before my taster class.
As you know I am still a big bird, so I think I look hilarious.
I can laugh at myself as I get my exercises. It’s a lot better than just watching the telly and not moving.I am seeing a lot more places, doing a lot more things. Basically I am living instead of existing.
My mental attitude has changed a lot , I am not miserable, I am happy.
My fitness has gone from a minus number to getting healthier all the time.
Regarding body size , I am just crawling along.
Love
Lucia

Kathy54,
This is also new to me and I see I have posted my reply to you in ‘Frog’s’ post!! SORRY!
Devena what sort of things are you looking up as I have been using it for years. You can also add your own using the information from the packaging. If you are seeing things in cups they sound like they have been added by other people.
AND I have put ON half a pound in two days. I’m seriosuly concerned. π
Thanks so much, Kathy54,
That’s the one I’ve been using but don’t trust the measurements because they use ounces and cups which I’m not really used to and half the time I’m guessing!
Devena welcome to the BSD a lot of people use an app called MyFitnesspal which is good.
Hello Kathy54
Thanks so very much for your words of encouragement. Your past eating habits sound just like mine!
What methoid do you use to keep tabs on what you’ve eaten?
Do you know of an online diary where I can keep a note of EVERYTHING I eat during the day and will tot up the carbs and calories for me? I’ve found one but it’s American and I’m not used to the measurements they use.
hey there Happy! Hope you are still doing well and having an awesome time π
Gabby well done on your weight lose, there are people who have been on the BSD for 16 weeks plus so you should be fine.
