Best comedian? So hard to pin it down to one, LUCKY
I love Peter Kay..he is spot on with his observations..and Phoenix Nights was hilarous!
i also love Peter Serafinowicz..hard name to say or spell…very funny Liverpool comedian.
    And i love Eddy Izzard.
Some comedians i like but their delivery is quite slow and i find that tiring! E.g.,Stewart Lee.its brilliant timing but i lose patience tho its actually worth waiting!
I like sillybilly stuff too…has anyone listened to Count Arthur Strong on radio 4? He had a tv series recently.

I havent seen Frankie BOyle Lucky..he doesnt sound very good from what you say!

Anyone remember the programme The Comedians on tv years ago? Some very funny comedians on there.x

    Hi everyone

I’m on holiday in York for a few days.

Managed to find a few items of clothing (still to be tried on!) – underwear, a top and a pencil skirt. Shops visited today range from Designer Outlet Mall, through M&S to Sainsburys and Asda. And many stopping points inbetween

    Yesterday I walked 10,357 steps or 7.24 km (4.5 miles). Today it’s 14,755 steps or 10.29 km (6.4 miles).

Anyone got any tips for getting more fibre into me, the best types of foods? The pain relief I am on for my back leaves me with terrible constipation, I’m loathe to take laxatives, and I’m terrified I’ll end up with faecal impaction or something, after hubby had it once :-O

Yowzer, well done on the PJ’s! I haven’t wore PJ’s for years, but I know hubby bought me some a few years back, why I’ll never know, but they may fit me now…! Didn’t then, for sure!

Nice to see you again Barista, and glad you’re at maintenance now! Well done! Still a way to go for me yet, but I’m enjoying myself on the journey anyway!

Random question – who is everyone’s favourite comedian, and who do you just not ‘get’?

My favourite is Peter Kay, and I think Frankie Boyle is about as funny as an STD.

Hi all, just wanted to celebrate. I finished my eight weeks at 12 stone and 1 pound which is 1lb less than two stones lost 😊 Very happy with that. We went away this last week, on holiday, which was lovely and I paid very little attention to diet restrictions for the week, (except that my tastes have changed a lot so lots of my choices stayed the same as the BSD recommendations) and I find on coming home that I have only put on a pound and three quarter. Which really sets me up to start again with another eight weeks. If I can lose another two stone I’ll be getting into the healthy bmi range which would be fantastic. I wouldn’t have believed, earlier this year, that I could potentially be at a healthy weight by Christmas πŸ˜€
Thanks to all the people who post regularly, reading about you all keeps me on track

    Day 43
    Wednesday 31 August 2016

Sitting here getting a few projects done and some orders. calling a few clients to follow up today. It was a big day yesterday with Ferrer, Andy Murray, Serena Williams, Venus Williams, and Del Potro winning all the games at Day 2.

My stomach was not so hungry. Then 8 last night I grabbed a can of tuna and munched on that before Serena’s game at 8 PM. I did good last night not doing a George Costanza at the Arthur Ashe Stadium:

  • Hi Lowenna

You are correct in that some strength exercise, if not done with the right technique, can cause issues. I am a PT in a gym and I spend quite a bit of my time correcting technique. If you don’t have underlying issues or weaknesses, most exercise are adaptable to anyone’s ability level and are quite safe.

Re your question about swimming – go for it! Swimming is a great form of full-body exercise . It’s not quite strength training but the water adds resistance so you will still build strength. It’s also great for improving stamina, aerobic performance and boosting your metabolism.

    Enjoy the pool!

    Hi Verano

I have a monitor but generally haven’t been testing however because I’m now following the BSD I’ve decided to test every morning as it will give me the most consistent readings and also indicate whether the diet is working.

I wasn’t testing regularly but started to yesterday. I think it’s worth doing as weight loss is only one measure and ultimately getting those blood sugars down is the ultimate goal πŸ™‚

I think it’s worth doing as well because it may help you to see if your blood sugars spike when you eat certain types of food. Hope that helps.

Life on maintenance BSD is fun πŸ™‚ It’s nice to recognise when I am full instead of eating for the thing of it….
We had weekend visitors and to be honest, I was aghast at how much I ate. And wrong foods.
I plucked up the courage to weigh this morning and I had stayed the same! Shock horror! I was sooo pleased. I think that because we are a lot more conscious, when we slip up, it is not as bad as we think or as it ever used to be.
Just stay away from those carbs and we’re victorious.
Want to lose a few more pounds to be at my ideal target but if that takes me a month I don’t mind….. I’m so happy with the new me!
    Keep it up everyone!

Hey everybody! Our summer has been crazy – hubby is still not well – heart troubles and kidney problems – he’s been off work a lot – with lots of trips to doctors out of town, which means a lot of take-out meals… My focus for the last 3 or 4 weeks has been to just maintain and I’ve been successful in not regaining what I’ve already lost.

I love the idea of a second 8 weeks! kind of a good way to re-start the process and not feel like a failure and not be overwhelmed by a year-long process.

I’ve lost 10 pounds so far since I started here but when I looked at my fitbit stats I realized that I’m really down 26 pounds since January so I’m trying to be happy with my success and not look at how far I still have to go (I need to lose another 100 pounds)(sigh).

This week I plan to get back to basics – I like the idea of re-reading the book, too, I’ll do that as well!

Refuse to get back on the scales until bloating has gone otherwise i would be very disheartened and definitely would hear the chocolate calling my name. One more day of driving around cramming as many jobs in as we can before he is off again then i can get back to a daily walk with my son. Caro

The principle of this diet is everywhere. On TV, radio i the press. Watched a TV doctor explaining it to the presenter who, when looking at the array of allowed foods asked ‘where are the carbs’ . The doctor pointed him to the fruit, veg and nuts and the idiot said ‘what, no chips’. Still it was Eamon Holmes so what did I expect.

Although no mention of MM or the 800 calories it seems the Med diet is catching on.

If you log onto the phcuk.org and type in Healthy Eating Guidelines and Weight Loss Advice for the United Kingdom you will see that they are absolutely sold on the idea of low carb and low calorie diets for weight loss and improving health. On page 16 there is a picture of a plate division of good foods with half of it coming from simple carbs, so bread, potatoes etc. This was the old advice. Then turn to page 27 and the plate has changed to only include complex carbs explaining that broccoli, cauliflower, courgette, nuts and seeds are carb rich along with fruits like blueberries, raspberries and avocados.

One reason NICE in the UK are not accepting these findings is because they say, although it looks good, more research is needed. In reply to this phcuk carried out their own research and are re-presenting it to NICE. The other reason NICE are not asking medical people to follow this advice is, and I quote …..

“NICE have concerns that the current knowledge and experience of healthcare professionals may not be adequate to implement the LCHF diet throughout the NHS.”

So it is up to us to become the educators. Next time you go see your medical professional, print page 27 and show them what you eat.

Hi Yowzer, don’t make the mistake my husband did. He heard bananas were good for you so ate one every day. Next blood test his potassium levels were through the roof. He told his doctor what he had done and of course, just because something is good for you doesnt mean more is better. I should have told him cleaning the bathroom and toilet are good for your heart. Doh….

A little bit of what you fancy etc and I have noticed that the odd carb does not send us back to square one.

Ah Igor, you are a kindred spirit (whatever they are!?). I’m also on maintenance and agree wholeheartedly with your lessons learned. The BSD totally changed my perception of food, appetite and cravings. Now I often can’t be bothered to eat 3 meals, and portion sizes are mini in comparison to my previous meals! I generally avoid all refined carbs BUT if I fancy a beer or a (small) dessert, I have it! The carb Devils can’t get a foothold if there’s just an occasional treat πŸ˜‰ However my days of drinking bubbly seem to be over.. The BSD hangover after only a couple of glasses is not worth it!!

  • Hi Verano, I have heard that T2 are not encouraged to test as it makes you all neurotic???? I can see this since my hubby got a BP machine and it is his new best friend but it will wear off. Here in France, because I am on insulin, my doctor encourages me to test once a day, changing the time on alternate days. So day one I test before breakfast, day 2 I test before dinner (so almost on empty stomach). The afternoon test can be higher if I have had a snack but I don’t snack much now on this diet. Whilst I have been on this diet, because I have recognised the shaky feelings as getting too low, I test to make sure I am ok. That was just until I got used to the diet and stabilised my intake, exercise, snack etc. I still test twice a day as this diet is very strict and it helps me decide how much insulin to inject each night. For none insulin users they recommend 1 or 2 times per week.

The ???? was glycogen. If you eat at say 8pm and test your blood at say 8am you have gone 12 hours without food. Your body thinks you need an energy boost so the liver produces a sugar product to see you through until your next meal. Your liver does not know you are on a diet it just detects a lack of nutrients. If you give it a little snack (1 oz of chicken or ham, some yoghurt or a couple of prunes) you fool it into thinking it is being fed and can closed down its auto response. Voila, no spike.

Igor, I have just had the no carb ploughmans for my lunch (290 calories). It has taken me more than half an hour to get through it, who knew an apple, sliced thinly could be so much. Ended up hubby saying “you could always give me some of the apple” so I did.

I’m not ready to give up the 800 yet as my HBA1c has a way to go, but see me finally sticking with the Med diet.

  • Have you discovered courgetti yet?

I keep banging on about courgetti in a home made tomato sauce. Add, capers, olives, anchovies and Parmesan for a really tasty meal and very low carb/cal. Add any protein you like or just more Parmesan. Life savour when your hungry because it’s looks like so much food and it’s only maybe 1 large cougette!

Have a look at the following site.
Enter your details, give info re activity levels, estimate your body fat.

    http://keto-calculator.ankerl.com

Then see what happens if you lower your carb grams per day. Whilst you are eating Mediterranean/BSD you may still be having quite a high carb load.

I didn’t have a lot to lose and set carbs at 20g per day (tricky but do-able).
See my thread “not too much to lose but…” by searching top right, or check through my Username.

This may be the key for you. I was very successful, by the way.

    Hope that helps πŸ™‚

    thank you, sunshine-girl.

I’m on maintenance now, and still just bumbling round trying to get a handle on it – checking on MFP what the carb content of things are, and checking up on calories (because though you get used to various combos, it’s interesting to see nutrients).

I need to eat about 1500 calories per day for maintenance, which is in fact quite a lot if you don’t eat refined carbs.
But I feel so great on restricted carbs, I’m keeping those relatively low…..therefore a bit of fat from the cream of my lovely treaty desserts was quite ok. And still eating when hungry, which means that this morning though I’ve had three cups of coffee (standard for me) I’ve not had breakfast yet, so it’ll be lunch when I get to it.

I think my major lessons from the BSD are

    – watch those refined carbs, they may be doing unexpected things to you and not just weight gain
    – eat mindfully, and really enjoy food as it’s lovely (sometimes surprisingly so)
    – try lots of different food and experiment in cooking as your tastebuds recover from the carb fog
    – and enjoy the results of the weight loss!

To everyone just starting, please don’t worry too much – it’s only 8 weeks, and will shrink up to nothing behind you.
Let your body do the changing at its own pace. You can’t hurry it up, you will be different from other people.
Watch the measurements as well as everything else.

To all the old-timers, keep on losing!!! πŸ™‚

    πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

  • Chookymama – thank you πŸ™‚ Yes I think portion control has been the things that’s got out of hand for me – I just LOVE tasty food and certainly eat way too much of it. I just saw Verano’s reply to your post – I think they may be right. Tiny portions are so depressing. Although I have to say the mushrooms and goats cheese served on a smaller plate did actually look quite a lot – thankfully! Good luck too 😊

    Hello everyone,

Brand new here and been 3 1/2 weeks on the 8 week diet at 600 kcal/day. feeling very low/depressed/frustrated as I have lost a total of… 1kg!
I am lucky to have no blood sugar problems, but really need to lose some weight. My diet has always been very mediterranean so this is only a change in the sense that I have eliminated carbs and sugar (always loved both and had them often). Being a quite petite woman I have always eaten in small quantities. My husband and children have always said I eat like a bird: now with the seeds I’ve added to my diet I really AM eating like a bird :-))
I exercise regularly (go to the gym everyday, go sailing, keep active doing the day and love walking) although I used to not move much due to a pretty sedentary job.
The first couple of weeks were a bit tough re resisting temptations but now I’m in the groove and actually choose or even “crave” the right kinds of healthy nutritious light foods I’m supposed to have. I’ve even found some foods too sweet! Unheard of.

It doesn’t make any sense and my husband and children closely monitor what I eat and my activity levels so I can’t cheat. They can’t understand this either.

Has anyone here had a similar experience? Any idea what is wrong with me? Why can’t I lose any weight?
Thanks for any comment or help

I am at home now for this 8 weeks apart from one long weekend trip at the end of September so am really going to give it a bash.
All support and kind words gratefully received.

Please don’t despair – every one is an individual, and (though it’s hard) you shouldn’t compare yourself with anyone else. You don’t say how your measurements have been doing – hope you measured/kept track via garments, because sometimes weight plateaus whilst measurements continue to go down.

    Some thoughts
    – are you counting your carbs as well as calories? Keeping carbs under 50g per day (lower can also be achieved) sometimes kick-starts weight lost.
    – you could try having a few days of higher calories (say up to 1200), sometimes some people find that a bit of a change stimulates the response
    – increase the water intake even further, to give your body a chance to wash away the fat.

Many people here have had long plateaux but gone on to lose more weight.

    Hope that helps
