Morning.
Well after seeing off what turned out to be a rather stressful and emotional week and got rid of period i am back to report in for day 1 of week 3.
Only lost 300g last week. Not surprised or disappointed actually. Just glad it was a downward trend. Fell off the wagon a fair bit if the truth be told. Other half has gone back to work so can get back to my routine.
Another thing i noticed was that my usual comfort foods did not satisfy me the way they used to. In fact they would leave me feeling a bit yuck.
So after two weeks on BSD i have lost 2.8kg.
JMG – your commit to exercise is to be commended. Only in my dreams. ……

Glad to hear it arrived safely and you like it Frog! you are welcome and thanks again for being my first customer 🙂
There is a bid on one of the keyrings I listed on ebay as well so hopefully one way and another I will be able to sell a few. I’m still enjoying making things anyway. I finished varnishing the coaster set and I’m really pleased with how they turned out but I haven’t photographed them yet to post on my blog. I don’t think I will try to sell them though I have a friend who has recently moved and I think she would like them so it can be her housewarming gift.
I have also made two choker necklaces with coloured chain, a decorative bead and a skull bead, with ribbon at the back for adjustable fastening. For myself and my friend to wear to The Rocky Horror Picture show next week, I will be customising our matching tops over the next week as well, I’m so enjoying the process – not just making but thinking about making stuff, thinking about what might work and trying bits out, experimenting.
Sleepy time for Izzy, night all !

Oh the joy of hitting a target! I’ve been quite good at setting myself mini-targets but in recent weeks I have lost momentum and am still a few pounds off my ultimate target (please see my profile, just click on my “name”). But I am determined to get back on track. Been a bit stressed recently which hasn’t helped – I’m a bit of comfort eater. But those of you who have managed it, very well done!
Linda – like you, I’m not T2, nor pre-diabetic, and I added “extras” in. I probably did it too early which is why I’ve stalled but for maintaining your current weight you should be OK. Just do it gradually & keep an eye on things – if you notice a rise in your weight, nip it in the bud (a stitch in time saves nine, so they say).
John – think you hit the nail on the head when you wrote of the journey, you need to have a plan for when you arrive at the destination. It can be tough losing the weight but the real trick is keeping it off long-term.Good luck everyone.

Signed into FatSecret and have uploaded my first day. 961 cals and 68 carbs, not to bad for a beginner. I think it was 455 cals used in exercise so all good. Night, night
-
it was the cheese and peas 🙂 I think that’s where the apps are great as it helps us realise that even our healthy choices can be unexpectedly high in carbs sometimes so accidentally slowing down our own weight loss. I did find quite quickly that my appetite dropped and find it hard to eat larger portion sizes now. Good luck with it all
-
Hi Jackieppp – well done – I found at the start particulalry it was important for me to have healthy snacks around – so always had some nuts on hand, some home made soup in the fridge or the freezer just to help me through those moments.
-
fantastic Trelawny, keep it up, if you’re having muzzy heads in the morning check that you are drinking enough water the day before as it could be related to dehydration. I’ve been doing it for a month now and have found it surprisingly easy – but I think when I started I was at a point where everything just came together and my motivation was high. Have any of you tested your blood sugar before you started as that was a good motivator for me to stay on track. Also, something to consider, my girlfriend and I both found that eating cows milk dairy stalled /slowed down our weight loss, so I switched to goats milk, same for splashing in my tea and coffee and it seems to have really made a difference. It’s a little more tangy than greek yoghurt but I mash my berries up a bit so more of their sweetness permeates the yoghurt. I’ve also given up booze really easily but in this last week I had a single glass of wine one night and of champagne the next – felt headachy and stuffed up quite quickly after drinking them, sparked a sugar craving and next morning felt like I had a hangover. Am going on holidays soon so may have to test out the odd gin and tonic at sundown tho! Anyway wanted to say to all you in this little online group – you’re doing brilliantly, keep it up and support really helps.

Well there seems to be a possibility of BSD causality, which should reassure us all as it seems we will recover the lost hair if that is so. I emailed Prof Taylor in Newcastle but got no response. There seems to be a lot of evidence on the web about the connection but none with enough authority to give reassurance. Pity we can’t get MM & co to comment on this side effect.

Just spotted your post Avila – read through the thread, thought ‘that’s exactly what happened to me’ – then realised it was my own post from three months ago!
I’ve had a similar experience in that I’ve not had a period since I had a mirena coil fitted about four years ago – then I had one about two weeks ago. I’d kind of assumed that I’d gone thru the menopause by now and not noticed it because of the lack of periods anyway – clearly not!Yuk to fish oil – where’s the smoked salmon?

Hi Avila – that’s brilliant news about your dog
I know it’s a shame about the muzzle, but fantastic that you’ll be able to keep herAre there dog training classes near you that you could take her to that might help? (My sister was very proud that her recently acquired rescue dog achieved his bronze medal at classes).

Hi Verano
the techies generally get back very quickly when I’ve reported a problem – usually dodgy advertising, but once I managed to publish the same recipe several time over.
To be fair, many other commercial organisations would charge for a site like this, and/or fill it with ads (it’s just us lot going on about oppo ice cream here!)
Earlier in the year I bought a “no sugar diet” book, £15 full price – I paid a lot less on Amazon but the whole book was really just an opener to join the online website – I thought it was £10 a month but have just checked “The 8-Week Program costs £79”. I didn’t.
You pay your money (or not!) and make your choice! -
Hi Jillf,
I started the BSD on 6th March and stuck to it rigidly for 8 weeks. I lost over 2st. Since then I’ve upped my cals a bit but only noticed my hair loss after about 16 weeks. I read somewhere that hair loss may be as a consequence of things that happened 3 months prior to noticing it. Mine’s still falling out – I use a dustpan and brush around where I sit to dry it (laminate floor). Plus, im nearly 52 so perhaps my hormones are playing a part ( I still have periods). I definitely have a bit of growth though – although on examining it I have a feeling these hairs could be just ones that have snapped off and look like new hairs growing!! Aaargh! My bloods were fine though. Mystery! -

My hair has got a lot better in recent weeks – hairdresser commented that the regrowth (after the Brazilian blow dry disaster a year ago) is very thick.
It’s also the first few weeks that I’ve been able to just wash it and leave it without getting a candy floss style frizz.I have been using a new shampoo and conditioner that I like and think has helped a lot – but will mainly only have helped control the frizziness, not the thickness I think. It’s Redken’s PUREOLOGY strength cure

Hi Jackieppp, lovely to have the grandkids around but very tiring. Keep up the good work, remember ‘this is the first day of the rest of your life’, and we can all eat well for one day!! An old cliche but shall we adopt it as our own? It can be our battle cry!!! Good food choices. For me a mediterranean plate for lunch, must say I wasn’t looking forward to it, but it was delicious, lots of picky morsels, scrummy. Dinner was gingered quorn stir fry, followed by greek yogurt and blueberries. Managed an hours stonk along to the harbour, went out at 5.30, it was cooler and quieter and very relaxing. It’s been another good day, let’s see what the scales have to say in the morning, apart from ‘get off’ that is, lol!
Scrolled through the recipe section on here during my lunch break and printed off the ones that took my fancy, haven’t had a detailed look as yet, but will tomorrow before I go shopping. I am really enjoying my food choices so far. Lots of flavour.
See you tomorrow, bfn -
Hi Yowzer – just got in!
Night! -
I started the BSD in Feb did 7wks and then had ten wks in Turkey, doing low carb but not being as observant as previously. On returning in June I started the BSD proper again and am just getting to the end of week nine. I guess I noticed the thinning and heavy shedding while we were away and once noticed I became more and more aware of it. Really noticed it how much had been shed when hoovering up! Loads seemed to come out when I brushed my hair and it seemed like I had loose hairs hanging and irritating me all the time.
Only very recently noticed some regrowth. It’s very short and a bit fluffy, but it is definitely there. Hoping that it will continue grow and that the shedding doesn’t start again. Can’t say I have done anything to cause the regrowth – not consciously anyway. Hope you situation resolves soon – keep us posted Jillf.

Leeanne that is great news and proves it is not permanent in your case – I am so thrilled for you. Can I ask how long ago you started the diet or gave up carbs? Same question to you SunnyB ? And you have my sympathies, both. How long between getting significant thinning and noticing new hairs do you think?
My GP wants to test for iron deficiency so that is next step next week. You two sound like you have recovery in sight though – fantastic! Hope the same happens to me.

Hi all
Phew – got the grandchildren round for a couple of days. Food is in demand all the time. Ok for them but me, I’ve got to try and keep my new lifestyle going. Not even try – I’m going to do it and I’m taking all my new friends with me. That means all of you by the way. Anyway, avocado and egg for breakfast!, home made celary, leeks, onion soup for lunch and chicken salad for dinner. No oreos for me!. Love to all -

Chookymama – got through the dinner last night. Whilst everyone else was snacking on tortilla chips and breadstick, I stuck to cucumber and pepper sticks with a bit of tzatziki and some home roasted cashews (no added fat or salt and they were AMAZING). It was caribbean themed so I had cooked jerk chicken with rice and peas and a huge salad so I stuck to the chicken and salad. They cleared 9 bottles of wine – I had 2 G&T’s with fresh squeezed lime (slimline tonic). Feeling relieved. Thanks for your support 🙂 -
Arty have you tried the Dawn Effect trick, have a small snack just before you go to bed. It tells your liver you are not starving so it wont pump out glycogen at 2 or 3 am showing a spike in the morning. Lots on here about it.

Linda,
Amazing! Bravo!
I’m afraid I’m the last person to give advice on maintenance. I’ve lost stones and stones many times in the past, and always put it all back again and more.
However, what I plan to do myself is to keep the carbs very low. I think it’s carb “spikes” that do all the damage – from what I remember from the book, the low carb thing isn’t just a weight losing ploy, it’s a strategy for life. I’m praying that this is what will stop me piling it all back on this time.
I’ve just started to eat larger portions of what I’ve been eating on the BSD – all introduced bit by bit
So.. a bigger helping of porage in the morning,
……. more yoghurt (full fat sheep’s) , nuts etc for lunch (or avocado, sardines, cottage cheese, egg etc if I get fed up with yoghurt)
…….scaled up meals from the BSD book recipes – particularly more veg – I love veg. From my experience, I would only increase things slowly – one meal at a time –
I’m also really going to try and keep up the exercise – over a week I’m nearly averaging an hour a day (that does include a 25 minute BRISK walk, which years ago I wouldn’t have counted, but I gues that in one’s 60s it’s valid)
Tomorrow I’m going to treat myself to grilled bacon with egg and tomatoes fried in olive oil (but no toast)
We’re heading into uncharted waters. – I know what you mean about feeling a bit cut adrift – it’s such an all-consuming project to get the weight off, and it can seem a bit flat when you get there. On the journey you always imagine that you will be deliriously happy when you get there, but actually it’s not like that. You need a NEW project linked to well-being – I’m going to work out how I can keep up cycling exercise during the cold wet months – perhaps investigate “spinning” -classes – does anyone know exactly what these are?
I have a feeling that we’re going to need each other much more than ever before now – we’re probably most of us goal-oriented beings, and just “keeping it off” is a bit uninteresting. We must help each other to stay focussed.
Onwards and……. er…….? (Need a new sign off line)
John

Day 15. BS 8.4 mmol/L. Now off 1000 mg Metformin still can’t get my BS below 8 when waking in the morning. Hopefully, will improve over time. Still it is good to be free of Meds 5 days now. Sea trials in the boat continue it is all I hoped it would be. Sunburnt but happy.
Hope everyone is well, our journeys continue.

Wanted to welcome you on board and wish you luck with your quest. Most people find that once they get the first week out of the way, it’s relatively plain sailing, bar the occasional blip and plateau. Remember to keep an eye on the carbs, drink lots and use full fat to help with the hunger pangs. You will soon be posting positive results, but shout if you need support or want info, as someone will be bound to respond.

Because I am more used to MFP am finding FS not so good yet so will keep the two running for a few days until I work out which is easiest for me. I did manage to set the 800 cals but not the carb, fat etc though it does show what I have eaten broken down ok, time will tell… -
So relieved to find this thread. I too have been suffering from heavy shedding, at one point I was worried I’d go bald! To be honest, it didn’t even occur to me that it might be my diet that was causing this problem, but I’m please to say it seems to have stabilised now and there is definitely some new growth happening too. I am taking a daily multivit/mineral supplement and am thinking about trying a skin, nail and hair supplement as well, but not taken that decision yet. Think I will wait and see how things go over the next couple of months and then decide.

Hi,
Thanks for your thoughtful reply, it’s much appreciated. My aim is to be a Type3 – someone who was type2, but has ‘reversed’ their diabetes (normal blood sugar, no medication).
I’m awaiting the results of my latest HBA1c test, but based on self-testing every morning for the last few months hope/expect it to be below 8.
I’m planning to start my 8 weeks on Monday 26th of September — I’ve work and family commitments that would make it especially difficult before then and will then be able to take bit of time off to get through the first bit.
I think you are right about taking it slow. I’m used to self-testing and have developed a good sense of the relationship between a test result and how I feel.
I think reducing the gliclazide a bit fairly quickly is a good idea. From what I’ve read it’s the one most likely to cause a hypo.
Hopefully, if I can turn in some good, consistent, numbers over the coming weeks what to do about the other diabetes drugs will become apparent.
I’m sort of relaxed about the blood pressure and cholesterol medication for now. I’ll be monitoring both, but off one drug at a time!
I don’t hold out much hope for bringing my doctor round. She doesn’t strike me as a lady who is for turning, but I can use that as a motivation!
Anyone out there gone medication free from where I’m starting?

My hair is still falling out – very noticable loss in my hair brush and also on my shoulders/arms after I’ve dried it in a morning. What i have noticed though is that underneath my fringe i have new growth around my hairline of what looks like baby hair. My hair is a shoulder length blunt cut. It’s not dyed and I don’t faff with it. I’ve upped my cals to about 1000 daily and haven’t gained weight. Im just hoping it will thicken up soon. Its a worry for us women!
-
I think the problem is that people diet rather than make life changes, which is why they fine the weight goes back on again. It is not reasonable to expect you can go back to whatever you were doing before and keep the weight off. And I agree with Igorasusual, most people don’t understand how to lose weight. If they did, company’s like WeighWatchers and SlimmingWorld would be bankrupt.
For me- as for any others – the BSD has been a revolution. I no longer think about food in the same way as before. My tastes have completely changed and I am feeling healthier than I have in years. The sooner to low carb message spreads the better for all – it is not the fat in the burger that is the enemy, it’s the carbs in the bun.
If the definition of ‘good’ evidence for everything is the quantity, then yes there is, if the definition is quality, well not so much.

on 2 Sep 2016 at 16:27 in Welcome to the BSDHi Jaynepatemen – there are lots of good threads on here with heaps of advise, hints, tips and support. I think the keys to the BSD is to keep low carb – preferably 50g per day or less; drink plenty; remember full fat is your friend on the BSD. If your fruit teas are the tea bag sort, I think you should be fine with those – however the granule sugar based type are a no-no.
Don’t panic if you go over on the calories occasionally and be kind to yourself. Finally, shout out if you need support as someone will respond and please let us all know how you get on as we all love to read about the success people are having.

OH BOY! Do not get me wild up on fixing timing belts on my Volvo (Very Odd looking vehicular Object). My car would not charge. i thought it was the alternator. Guess what!? it was the regulator. That is not suppose to break. 125000 miles on it and it breaks!!! 800 bux down the drain. Plus another 600 for brakes and rotors!
Maybe i should not have done my adventure in NYC this 2 weeks! But, I love the US OPEN! So, that is life! Djokovich will definitely win tonight! Thank you for the info you posted re: Fat Secret. It is so easy to use and I have been adding my favourite meals today. I lost 1st 1lb quite easily doing the med diet – but have stalled with at least 7lbs to go before I am at goal. I suspect portion sizes crept up again – so Fat Secret is just what I need. Have been on holiday and have only eaten BSD friendly foods. The Chefs at every place we ate were quite happy to ditch the carbs and substitute a salad or vegetables instead. We had a 3 course meal every day and for desert I had strawberries and cream – so will weigh in tomorrow morning to see what the damage is. Previously I have managed to put on 10lb in a week but I don’t think I have this time as often I wasn’t able to finish my meal. I will be keeping to the 800 cals until I lose the 7lbs plus any holiday weight I put on over the last week or so. -
Great results, Linda!
You could try the website I’ve mentioned a couple of times
http://keto-calculator.ankerl.comwhere you can enter your statistics and discover what your base metabolic rate is, and then that will tell you how many calories per day you need to maintain your weight.
Then you can fiddle with the carbs a bit setting them up and down to see how much fat and protein you need. It also gives you a graph at the end.
I have done this, and am maintaining MFP at the moment to see how this works for me on maintenance. It may well be, I think, that I will up the carbs with more salads and veg generally, as otherwise it can be difficult to get the calories up….although I do eat plenty of cheese to help me 😉
Hope that helps – like me, you will probably have to experiment a bit to get it sorted to your satisfaction.
