    Hello everyone

I started the diet yesterday after finding out all about it in the newspaper and then buying the book. I have a lot of weight to lose and am truly horrified by my waist measurement, so I’m hoping that this works for me. I’m not very good at counting calories or carbs so I’m trying to stick to the recipes as strictly as possible.

Here is what I have had so far: please let me know if having stuff I’m not allowed!!
Breakfast both days – 2 scrambled eggs
Lunch both days – Jewelled peppers
Dinner – fishcake, beans & broccoli/Baked cod on a bed of kale
    Snack @ 11 – 1/2 an avacado
Drinks – strong tea with very small amount of milk

Looking forward to all the support we can give each other 🙂

Jackieppp well done for hanging on. Hope you have a good week.

Today, so far so good. I was feeling hungry about 12 noon and suddenly realised I had had no water to drink, so guzzled three quarters of a pint and then forgot I was hungry!!!! Beetroot, carrot, walnut and feta salad for lunch, harvest pie for tea, greek yogurt and berries for snack this evening.

Have a good day everyone xx

    Hi Tony,

I am starting today also. My weight is 220lb and waist is 49.
    I wear an 18.
My eight week goal is 167 or 6.6 pounds a week nearly a pound a day.
Then I was hoping for 142 after that.

We end on December 5th. We can do this, keep me posted. Sandy

  • Good news Snoop! We’re about the same so I’m with you on reaching the 70’s by mid November 🙂
Tabletalk – everyone says drinking water is really important but I don’t :{ I drink a lot of black, no sugar, de-caff coffee but should I drink water as well? I’m spending plenty of pennies! Interesting about the leptin too.

I am reading in different threads comments about what a doctor has said or what a nurse has said when you tell them about the Blood Sugar Diet. Just to try to get an idea of the medical professions reaction to this, it would be interesting to have all the comment together under one thread. Some people have told the doctor before starting, what did they advise, has that changed now they are seeing your good (I hope) results. Have there been any really positive or really negative reactions to us taking things into our own hands. Some of you will have just started and not had the conversation yet, I know some are due to be retested at the end of this month. Let us know how you get on and lets hope there are more positive than negative. Maybe this will help people who are going to be having this conversation soon and you must always tell your doctor what you are doing with your medical situation. Maybe we will recruit lots of doctors / nurses into our way of doing things. Also, it does not have to be diabetes related. Lots of people are doing this diet for other medical reasons or just for the sake of good health in general.

I will start off as I have already told my doctor what I am doing.

To start with my results had been terrible, it is a long story about a rubbish nutritionist putting me on a high carb diet. I was running an HBA1c of 8.2 and over 6 months and 3 tests not been able to get it down. My doctor was in despair with me, knowing I was such a good patient and always taken good care of myself. I had found Dr Mosleys book by chance and told my doctor I was going on a new diet, no details, he had already heard it all and just smiled at me. When I went back for my next check up my HBA1c was 6.7 my cholesterol and triglycerides were all down to well within a normal range, and my weight was down by 4kgs.

He was amazed and very happy with me. Then I told him about the diet…… When I said I was on 800 calories he nearly fell off his chair. No no no, you cannot live on 800 calories. I had typed up a list of 5 days worth of meals, in detail, not just courgette salad, but everything that went into it. At the bottom I had written notes like, I do not eat simple carbs, and listed them, I do eat complex carbs and listed a few like cauliflower, aubergine. I do eat full fat foods like butter, cheese, yoghurt. And so on, the water, how I manage my exercise days etc etc. Now, here I have to say because I live in France my doctor is like private, I pay him and a consultation is 15 mins but can be up to half an hour if I want to discuss things. This is my GP not a hospital consultation. I gave him the internet address for Dr Talyor at Newcastle University and told him to look if he was intersted, and I gave him a copy of Notes for Doctors. So basically I lectured him for about 15 minutes. He said my diet was nutritious and good and my results were so good how could he say different and that I was to carry on with what I was doing. I had already reduced my medication (insulin down from 37 units to 26 units each night and Glycazides down from 90mg to 60mg) which he was happy about. He said he would not reduce my cholesterol meds until he had seen another test result and I should stay on my blood pressure medication as it was still high at 130 / 80 with medication so not back to ‘normal’.

I had to see him 4 weeks later about something unrelated but he had to do my blood pressure and weigh me and I had lost another 1.5 kg and my b/p was 125/70, so he is open to discussion on my next visit at the end of November.

Knowing my doctor he will have looked at the web site and updated himself on the research and we will have a very full discussion which I will report back on here. I hope others stories are just as positive.

  • Hello All! Thanks Verano for that smashing recipe – shopping list written! I am really pleased to have lost 2lbs this morning so I am actually 4lbs lighter than before I went away 🙂 This is great news as it means maintenance (one day in the future!) should go well! However, back to BSD for now and I’d like to get more fibre into my diet – previously I’d go for AllBran or a banana but not now. I’m gauging my nutrient intake from MFP and sometimes I know it’s a bit off but it’s a general indicator. Have a good day everyone 🙂

    Hi Natalie

I ‘accidentally’ missed breakfast by doing some jobs after I got up and got so involved I realised that it was midday so I just had an early lunch!

I made up for it today – porridge and blackberries!
Lunch will probably be scrambled eggs or low sugar baked beans and for supper today I’m cooking the cauliflower cheese receipe from the book and adding broccoli to it

    Hi all,

I’m starting the 8 week BSD today (11th Oct 2016) and I’m looking for buddies on my fitness pal for to give and receive support. I’ve not been diagnosed with pre diabetes, but I know I am at risk as my mum was diagnosed with diabetes last year and I carry a lot of excess weight around my stomach.

I’ll be using ‘shake that weight’ shakes and soups in combination with a meal at night to reach my daily 800 Kcals. Once I’m on track I am going to move towards complete food.

    My starting statistics are:
    Fasting blood glucose = 6.9 mmol/L
Weight = 208.3 lbs (36.2% body fat) – My goal is to 168 lbs.
    Waist = 42.5″ (despite wearing 36″ jeans)

Any support is welcome, my username on MFP is the same as here asborthwick.

    Thanks
    Tony

    Hello,
I started 10/10 too and have no idea when the 8 weeks ends…
For me this will be a long haul, lifestyle change as I’m starting at 254 pounds. Back up several stones due to various life circumstances (primary liver cancer etc.) so ready to make a change.

    So far had
b: 3 egg and bacon muffins
    l: 10 almonds, veggie sticks, 30g cheese
    t: Bolognese with courgette!

Looking forward to getting to know you all.

    Sarah

  • Verano, in France if you work there is cover included by something you pay like national insurance based on salary. If you are very poor and on state benefits your medical care is free. As far as I know those only cover the 70% that would be reimbursed by the state, if you want to get more back you pay insurance. If you are young you might not expect to be ill so maybe not bother with 30% private top up insurance. So if you go to the doctor it costs 23 euros, you get 18 back so have to pay the other 5 yourself. Things are not expensive, the full cardio check up I had last week cost 96 euros and I get back 100% because it was because I am diabetic, if not I would get back about 60 euro. If I have full bloods done it costs about 28 euros with 21 refunded. If you can afford to pay up the other 36 or 7 euros you might not bother with insurance. Also, your private cover is based on age and state of health, we pay 100 euros a month because we are old, a 30 year old would pay around 20 euros a month. However, and here is the big BUT, if you end up in hospital and have an operation costing 10,000 euros and the state pays 7,000 could you afford the other 3,000 which is why lots of people opt for a cheaper policy covering just hospital costs. Also there are other costs in hospital, blood test, physio, anaethetics, bed and food. It sounds complicated but it works, however, the French health service is also on its knees, maybe because it over does the great care. There is no answer to growing costs of technology. Maybe I can convince them to give diabetics the French version of BSD. Now theres a thought.

  • Congratulations Snoop on the weight loss!!

I came across this Ted talk as well, and was encouraged. There is so much evidence for this type of eating, but I don’t know why it seems to be such a secret to everyone. Someone posted a while back about the old days when people knew that bread and carbs were the culprit and they could maintain weight better. Seems we’ve tossed out some good wisdom as a culture.

Been very busy lately…lots of friends with power outages and flood damage (we live in NC) due to hurricane. Doing well as far as that goes, but haven’t been on the diet. I am surprised that I lost weight/maintained over this last week even though I have cheated quite a bit. I read somewhere that a cheat day increases leptin levels (I think?) And temporarily tricks the body into shedding some weight. I need to get back on track though.

    Goal for today…water!!

And Snoop, it’s absolutely true about feeling poisoned when off the diet! My body reacts much faster to being stuffed and eating carbs. It’s been a great deterrent, as I know how yucky I’ll feel! That never used to happen! What a mercy!!

  • Hi how is everyone? I’m feeling great today….. Finally feel like I’m in the “zone” and that results are going to be good over the next few weeks.
I’ve lost another 4lbs this week which means I’ve hit a stone exactly in 2 weeks! I have previously achieved this type of loss on the Atkins diet, but it was a long time ago and once I’d fallen off that wagon I never got back on…. It’s great to have the encouragement of this group and to know once I’ve reached my goal the Mediterranean diet is one I can easily stick with.
I still have a long way to go….according to the General BMI charts I need to loose another 15lb just to get into the overweight category….. And then another 25lb to get to a healthy weight BMI…. It all seems very daunting and I’m not going to focus on the overwhelming numbers….. A good loss each week is obviously important in order to help me on my journey……I’m hoping to stick with the full fasting diet until December which will be about 10 weeks in total…… If I carry on losing at the 3-4lb mark then I should be 24-32lbs lighter which just sounds amazing! And could quite honestly be my goal!
Anyway I’m rambling…… I hope you are all still encouraged by your hard work and reaping the same euphoria!! Onwards and upwards for week 3 x

  • Hi all

Glad everyone is doing so well.

See sunshine-girl everything comes to those who wait!! Well done on your loss could it be anything to do with Zumba?

Interesting reading about the differences between medical care here and in France. I think I prefer the French way it certainly seems to speed up the process. What happens to those people who don’t have insurance or is it mandatory?

Granny snow peas are like a pea pod squashed flat with only tiny peas inside, you eat the whole pod. Common in Asian foods. They have a third the carbs of normal peas because you are eating the fibrous pod not just the sweet peas.

Wishbone I had a horrible headache yesterday and this morning but it’s gone now, I hope yours goes soon.

Reading everyone’s posts on gardening, Blue Jays successes, and Cold Feet is all very lovely. Nice to see what makes us all feel good.

I’ve been a little up and down over the weekend. Yesterday was much, much better. Things to be grateful for are:

    1. Our NHS – I feel for you Shalimar with regard to your cataract and choices. Sometimes it’s easy to forget how much we take it for granted here in the UK.

    2. Having more get up and go again … moving furniture here, there and everywhere yesterday trying to get the sitting room and kitchen looking just right (who knows if this is the right formation, but it’s this week’s formation!)

    3. Buying a stick blender … which inspired me to make a surprisingly delicious soup of spring onions, not quite perfect asparagus and frozen peas.

(Saute spring onions in about 10g butter; Add chopped asparagus, for a couple of mins. Add about 200 mls water, a handful or two of frozen peas, half a stock cube (chicken or veg), bring back to a simmer for a minute or two. Blitz with blender. Enjoy. It was deliciously sweet, and beautifully green and smooth).

Managed another jog yesterday – first day it hasn’t felt like just stumbling forwards, and actually started to feel like jogging.

  • Hi Krysia

Thai Red Salmon Curry 2 servings
360calories and 8.8g carbs per serving

    250g salmon cut into chunks
    1tbsp groundnut oil
    2tbsp shallots finely sliced
2 cloves of garlic finely chopped or minced
    1-2tbsp ginger finely chopped
2tbsp. red curry paste, or more to taste
    1tbsp fish sauce
    1 tsp sugar
    200ml light coconut milk
    Large handful of basil leaves.

Gently fry the shallots and ginger in the oil until softened.
Add garlic and cook for a further minute or so.
Add curry paste, to taste, and stir fry for a few minutes.
Add the salmon and coat with the spices
Add the coconut milk, fish sauce( or soy if preferred) , and sugar.
Simmer gently until the salmon is cooked …. maybe 10minutes.
At the last minute stir in basil leaves and wilt.

    That’s the basic recipe.
I add a smashed stick of lemongrass to cook in with the salmon. I also finish with the juice of half a lime and some coriander. If you like you can add a handful of peas while the salmon is cooking or some sliced mangetout. If there’s not enough liquid you could use more coconut milk but you’ll need to add any of those to the calorie/carb count.

You could serve with cauliflower rice or even cauliflower mash. Enjoy!

  • Just popping in, to say

    ARE YOU MEASURING??????

I always say that………sorry, not meant to be shouting, just making sure you’re taking due note 😉

Did you take measurements, or are you judging against some clothes. As Poppletini sensibly says, don’t get too attached to the scales they do go up and down or stay frustratingly level. But look at other things – how do you feel, is your waist going down, does your face look a bit thinner, are your jeans a bit looser.

You are actually changing how your body reacts to food, your hormonal response. Be kind, give it a chance!

Keep on keeping on and YOU WILL SUCCEED!

    🙂 🙂

Lucia – thank you so much for the ‘poem’ about Zumba-ing. I have saved it on my phone, and it really cheered me up.

Movement can be anything – from those marching by their beds trying to improve their day to day movement with ME and the like, to squeezing those bum cheeks as you say.

I’m more a fan of dancing round the kitchen when no-one’s home – as then my lack of graceful co-ordination goes unnoticed … except by the dog, who leaps around with me, with gentle nips here and there …

And, of course, my new found jogging … yesterday it changed from a painful and improbably ‘stumbling’ feeling to an actual I can lift my legs more easily ‘jogging’ feeling. So very exciting.

  • Yes Sunshine-girl – it was auto correct. My tablet makes really funny corrections sometimes.

Do have a lovely holiday. It’s so good you have your food sorted and it will be lovely to relax with a glass of wine with your family.

I will definitely post on your new thread as soon as I have seen my doctor on 25th October. It will be so interesting and I am beginning to look forward to it.

  • Morning all!

some great results I see on your low carb push!

    Re poo
Are you taking Magnesium? This is recommended as likely to be in deficit with lots of fluid, and I found that my poo issues (or digestive transit issues as they would have it in the ads – love the thought of an ad agency brainstorm about what to call it) resolved when I took some.

And Frog – can I ask you if you can remind me about the Waitrose low carb ice-cream or was it frozen yoghurt (not Oppo, the alternative) you mentioned some weeks ago? We love Oppo, particularly the salted caramel version, yum, but did you say there was another one – our local Waitrose hasn’t got it, and I can’t remember what it’s called.

Good to see all the new entrants, wish there were some ‘sticky’ posts with key points to remember at the top of the board, so that all the experience here could be found easily……always sad when someone asks about little weight loss in week x/y/z and does anyone else experience it……

Onwards and downwards guys, I’m still holding easily at my target weight. 🙂

Sneakysnooper – found out that lost posts put on pounds – well one pin my case. It covered my day out in Edinburgh with my book club girls. (We live in Sussex so flew from Gatwick) Woke up at 4.30am, back home at 11.30pm. Walked 16 kms – more than 20,000 steps. Stuck to Under 800 calories foodwise but we did find a craft gin palace. Hence the pound and a fuzzy head. Anyway have lost it plus another so a total of 10 pounds down in just under 3 weeks.

Mixnmatch, six and a half stone is just so, so impressive, congratulations! Your porridge does sound delicious (especially as I had a protein bar).

I’ve a six-themed achievement this morning of a slightly less dramatic nature – down 6.2kg since I started (although not all of that since I restarted last Monday). And 9cm off my waist. Don’t know what’s different this time round but seem to be more motivated to get my step count up and have even been back to a yoga class I used to do. Hope I can stick with it, I’m just so bad at sucking up short-term pain for long term gain…

  • Frog – you have so made me laugh this morning, I’m with you on poo-logging (if you’ll pardon the pun), but to think there are others who’ve gone as far as to make the app is making me giggle.

Despite litres of water a day, spoonfuls of flax seeds (in water), lots of veggies … I’m really struggling with constipation. Like really, painfully, struggling.

All the advice given appears to assume that I’m in need of more water, more veg, more fibre … but honestly, I don’t think I could add in more without carbs. How are you doing?

In the last couple of weeks I have been knitting more. I have knitted 4 hats, a pair of socks, finished one jumper, nearly finished another, finished off a blanket. I am trying to get more organised in the knitting department. I have a lot of stuff that is half finished and just needs sewing up. I feel as if this reflects where I am on the journey, I have got so far and the end is in sight, I just need to focus and aim for the finish. I am more of a starter than a finisher, in Chris Powell terms I am on phase 3 which if anyone watches the programme is a particularly hard phase, although less weight to lose at this stage – keeping the motivation and focus is very hard, but I don’t want to have my medication increased – I want to be medication free by the end of this year (March 2017).

  • Good morning to everyone, a little bummed this am a very tiny gain but I think it’s just my water kind of evening back out. Less trips to the bath now even though drinking lots. Thank heavens. Trying to walk more be more mobile which is REALLY hard. I drive school bus and with all my runs I’m driving for 7 to 8 hours a day, it’s a work in progress

  • Hi All, today is my end of week weigh in and I have gone from 74.4 to 73.9, lost 0.5 kilo, yeeeeeeeees. and now under the 74 figure which was a mini goal. I have been counting all week and allowed myself 40 carbs but only actually reached that once, most days I was under and around 25 to 30, so I think the week before had struck a chord with me.

I wont be counting this week or joining another thread as I am going on holiday on Thursday, but fear not, I will be sticking to the low carbs. My daughter was doing her online shop last night for when we arrive and skyped me to ask what I wanted stocking up, so I am okay there. I have spoken to my husbands step-mother as she was worried about feeding me, so I told her about the diet and she said, oh that’s okay you just don’t eat rubbish. His sister, who is super fit (a mountaineer in Scotland) said, okay, you eat Mediterranean I can deal with that. So I should be okay at all stops along the way. We will be eating in restaurants on around 5 nights plus pub lunches whilst travelling between England and Scotland but I am okay with that, I just ditch the carbs and ask for extra salad or veg. On the down side there will be a lot of reunions, a new baby just arrived, catching up with a friend I havent seen for 11 years and, of course, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, with cocktails before and after, so a lot of toasting and drinking will take place and I make no apologies.

Frog, you are right about the French being over cautious. I had an incident of a problem in the UK and the doctor started with the simplest of treatments, then when that didn’t work went up to the next level, until in the end sent me for scans etc. It turned out I needed my gall bladder removing. As an ex nurse I had been telling them that from the start but I was put through months and months o pain, useless treatments and worries whereas a scan straight away would have seen the problem. I know, it is money. Here in France I went to the doctor with pain in my side and he sent me for a scan and ultra sound all in the same week. And I mean in the same week, saw doctor Monday, had scan etc on Thursday. You also have to remember that we pay to see our doctor, I pay to have my blood test, I pay if I see a cardiologist (like I did last week) so you get the best possible treatment quickly. Also paying means I am in control of my results, I get copies of everything. When I fist saw a gyneacologist here for routine smear (I had cancer a long time ago) she couldn’t understand why I didn’t have all my hospital records, smear results and copies of my mammograms. I have them here, and when I see my doctor for my diabetes test at the end of November I must also remember to take the copy of my EEG from the cardio and my mammogram films. When he has looked at them he will give them back to me, they are mine. You get back 70% of the cost from the equivalent of the NHS and you pay for insurance to cover the other 30%. In my case all my diabetic treatments are free, I pay, but I get back 100%. I like it and worry how I will adjust when we move back to UK, which I am sure we will eventually.

Krysia, that was clever of you to call your daughter ‘glucose’, was that auto correct or a freudian slip.

I am starting a thread called WHAT DID ‘YOUR’ DOCTOR SAY…… And will see what pops up, hope there will be a lot of positives.

  • Flash, I’ve been the same. A fantastically surprising result at the end of week 1. And then half a pound loss – if I stood on the scales just so – at the end of Wk 2. However, now 2 days into Wk 3 and something’s happening in a downward fashion on the scales again. Have you seen the ‘whooshes and swooshes’ article someone posted recently? (Sorry don’t have the link, but maybe google?).

Do you feel better eating this way? That’s what I’d base it all on.

Gosh am confessing I am a terrible procrastinator!!

When I first started the BSD I was absolutely fine and losing weight, enjoying the food etc – but, went on holiday and lost the plot on getting back on full track…. seem to be able to start each morning, lunchtime and then it goes belly up by tea time

    I know it works
I know for my own health it has to be done

SO, other than a huge kick up my rear , not sure what else to do…

I will restart again from lunch today…….

  • Flash, if you read some older threads you will find that many of us found weeks 2 and 3 a bit of a bu—er. It is when your body shuts down after the initial shock. That might not be technically true but it is what seems to happen. Always, always keep on the plan, it will suddenly come off. It happens at various stages so some at week 5, then maybe again at week 8 and so on. You have to expect it and go with it. One theory is that the first week there is body fat (blubber) and water loss, the second week the fat is melting away from your internal organs and this does not weigh as much as body fat. Just feel confident that you are doing the right thing for your body and KEEP ON KEEPING ON.

Wow! That’s a massive loss in four weeks, very inspirational! I’m only day two, week one, and your results will keep me motivated!

  • Morning all….feeling a bit glum this morning as had my official week 2 weigh in and I have not lost anything 🙁 I haven’t gained either, so I suppose that’s positive, but I really wanted to be at least a couple of pounds down again. That said I did have ice cream and wine over the weekend so I know I only have myself to blame. Really need to get out of the cycle of “treating” myself and then obsessing over the scale as clearly it’s not really a treat if I’m just sad about it after. Gahhhhh. Hope you are all faring better!

Onwards and downwards indeed, Mixnmatch! You are doing so well. I really like the sound of your porridge. Do you know roughly what the carb content is of that? I’m usually a porridge fan but have steered clear of it since starting the BSD.

Day two and the headache from hell. Bring it on carb flu, because I know this is working. Also sloshing around with all the water I’ve had. Have had very tame and boring meals compared to some here, I’ll have to get experimenting looking at Natalie’s repertoire! Contemplating a sneaky weigh in tomorrow, but being day three I might be a little too optimistic….

Go for it shalimar – the beauty of the BSD is that we can move between the 3 forms to suit our needs.
I’ve noticed all of my sinus problems have disappeared since eating low carb med style…..was it always the carbs?

  • Hi Frog – thanks for the info on canned Tuna. I didn’t know that so maybe substitute tinned salmon with cream cheese. The egg and smoked salmon sounds yummy and something I could eat for breakfast. I will look on the NHS website.

Verano – the Thai curry sounds good – and would be grateful if you could post it to me. I will also try the pate with smoked mackeral. Husband has also suggested that we could look at a meal with rainbow trout as he says he thinks I would like it – so I will start experimenting. I really do have to as I have got a bit stuck in a rut with my food at the moment.

  • Loopylou – that is absolutely the best thing to do. Forget about yesterdays figures and just start again today. We all have little blips from time to time.

Frog – that is an interesting concept. A poo diary. If I had been filling one in this week it would have gone very well. It is not always the case unfortunately. It would be good to find out why it has gone well so I could do it again. The only thing I did was to add my kefir in the morning when I eat my eggs. Maybe it helps. I will keep an eye on it.

Nickix… I used to drink a litre of water a day max and since starting the BSD I’ve upped it to easily 3 or more, that doesn’t include my coffee or anything else. You get the fat out that way too!
One trick I read on one forum which really works is to wake up earlier, drink a pint of water, lie down for half an hour. It really helps things moving.
