Hi Misty Hill
I don’t know of anyone here has experience with gout, but I’m sure they will help if they can. However, you might want to go to the team behind the website who might be able to advise more. There should be a ‘Contact us’ link at the bottom of the page perhaps where you send your question. All the best. -
There’s even a Pooch to 5k (Australian website I think) to encourage you to get your dog active too!
-
I make my own yoghurt using Yeo Valley as a starter – delicious!
-
Hi ChannelK
Another option is gram flour drop scones ( scotch pancakes) Make them the same as ordinary drop scones but use gram flour. Very nice. Filling.

Is this diet suitable for someone with gout or will it cause high uric acid levels?

So, my 8 weeks is up tomorrow…….
24.5 lbs (might have been a bit more but I stumbled more than once!!).
5 inches from my waist.
Fasting sugars down from around 14 to 5.5. Waiting an hba1c test.
Dropped my sitagliptin and forxiga tablets altogether.
Metformin down to 1 tablet per day (used to be 3).My waist is still higher than considered healthy, and so far the only new item in my wardrobe is new shoes! Just my luck, i seem to be shrinking from the feet up!!
So, where to go from here……….suggestions welcome, please!
-
Hi all
It’s been nearly two weeks since I had those glorious 5.6 and 5.5 levels and I miss seeing them. I’ve been deliberately avoiding taking any readings so as not to face any disappointment but did it tonight before dinner and was at 8.5. I wasn’t feeling too bothered though after discovering everyone else is getting the same problem. I don’t feel so alone! I guess it’s just going to take longer than I hoped. Keep positive everyone. We can do this.

Hi woofmum you just need to google ‘daily mail 8week blood sugar diet’. The articles were in january editions ๐
-
Sounds like you are keen to get started woofmum and there is lots of support and tips on the forums so make the most of them. It wouldn’t hurt to make a start cutting out sugar and starchy carbs before the book arrives, to start getting you body ready for your new eating regime, but be sure to read the book when it arrives, as it will help you to understand the changes you need to make, to achieve your goal.
Good luck with it and do let us know how you get on.

on 11 Mar 2016 at 18:35 in BSD Way of LifeHi kiwi, although I have finished the 8 weeks i am continuing for a while longer while slowly building the calories. I doubt I will go back to eating carbs the way I used to – it clearly didn’t do me any good. In future things like potatoes will be a very rare treat same with rice just a small spoon of brown rice with a curry, but feel i do t need it as i like the gram flour flatbreads ๐

Hey Lolo – the general wisdom is that if you are sticking to the 800 cals it will happen. I am almost at the end of week 3 now and so far this week, I’m down 1lb. I’m not stressing about it though, ‘cos I feel better and my body is looking less bulky, which will keep me going until more pounds drop. Losing inches any where shows something must be happening, so use that to keep positive and motivated, the rest will follow I’m sure.
-
Hi everyone,
Well done everyone on their weight loss. Really helpful to be reading this thread. I am in week 4 and have only dropped 2.5lbs over the previous 1.5 weeks… Topping that, I also haven’t lost any inches around my waist! I have been loosing from my thighs, bum and boobs!! *sigh* However it has to eventually start coming off again and from my waist, right?! Been helpful to read these posts. Thanks x -
Lidl do a 10% full fat Turkish yogurt which is fab – 111cals per 100g, but because of the higher fat content you don’t need a lot to give a satisfied feeling.

on 11 Mar 2016 at 17:42 in Welcome to the BSDThank you folks for your responses. It looks like I’m on the right track. Cherrianne I feel the same way about Quorn, but love your idea with sunflower seeds. Thank you. Jackfruit is another thing I have used a couple of times but maybe too processed. The mushroom options work well for me too. Cheers.
-
Also, although the book has a lot of different breakfast options, it would expensive to make them all. I’ve just chosen a couple (either an omelette, or full fat yoghurt with fruit) and make sure I have the stuff in the fridge, and just alternate between them as I feel like it. People are generally used to having the same thing to breakfast every morning, so that is no stretch.
-
I think learning to cook with fresh ingredients is a bit of a learning curve if you’re not used it. It takes a bit of experience to learn how to use leftover fruit and veg in different ways (soups and salads are always good, just throw in what you have!) so that it both doesn’t go to waste and you don’t get bored.
Takes a while, but you’ll get the hang of it. -
Hi Rach19c, I was interested in your info because my son is Type 1 and I wondered if he would benefit from this diet so he could reduce his insulin. I have been on it because I was getting high blood glucose but was not yet diabetic so a panic to get rid of my belly (I had also had a gall bladder removal and when you get photographs of your visceral fat its mighty alarming). I too have plateaued which is very frustrating. Its possibly because I am getting a bit blase and not taking so much care, or that my body is trying to hang on to the fat I have left! One of the best ways I have found for moving it on is to do exercise, so I do a 20 min intense training cd (only on level one because I am unfit) or I go for a walk/run for 20 minutes. I do it before breakfast so I force my body to use my fat reserves. I find this gets the weight loss going again. I would also say dont give up because once you get to your target weight, you will have the knowledge of how to stop it from creeping up again.
-
Thanks Cherianne…would you have a link to the download as I cant seem to find one please?
-
I can see where you are coming from mad medic, as it is much cheaper to have a ham sandwich or beans on toast instead of salmon salad or fish with vegetables. The same is true of potatoes instead of loads of veg and I know I have spent more on food since I have been on this diet but I am very lucky that i have an aldi very close to where I live. But having said all that I hope you dont feel you have to abandon the diet because I am sure in time, like me, you will find it is the best thing you can do for your health. Do keep logging onto the forums because there is lots of really good support and help. Good luck to you and your wife.

Oh sugar. It didn’t. I didn’t want to take over bills discussion.
Is it best I start my one chat?I am a female, type 1 for all my life, now mid 40’s, on a pump for last 13 year.
I know it says this isn’t for t1, but I couldn’t see why. On the diabetic forums loads of people do low carb, helps the spikes in blood sugars. Many do fasting, 5:2′ so I thought I’d try.
I wanted rapid weight loss. I’ve been on it since the beginning of Jan, so more than 8 weeks. Although I haven’t always been strict. There’s been a couple of curry and wine nights!!!
I lost a stone. Great. But I’ve lost nothing for 3 weeks now. And I can’t work out why.My diabetic pump a specialist nurse was well aware from the start, and is thrilled with my better blood sugars.
But I have another stone to lose, maybe a stone and a half left to lose. And if I’m not losing , why bother? I’m fed up now. No loss for 3 weeks.
Plus it gets on my nerves when I do go low, forced to drink lucozade, undoes all my hard work that day.
I went on MFP to log my calories. But I had been recently adding fats to things, thinking I needed it. Cream to soup, bacon bits to salad. 300 or 400 calories meant I was way over the 800!
I’m struggling to work out what’s gone wrong. -

on 11 Mar 2016 at 16:14 in Welcome to the BSDHi folks, there shouldn’t be any problems including tempeh and tofu in your diet. I use both and just count them in my daily allowance. Quorn (ughh) should be fine too if you like it.
Some of the usual protein sources might be higher in carbs, but the legumes as opposed to grains, are more beneficial as they are usually low GI.
Sunflower seeds are low carb and quite high in protein too. If you heat a small fry pan and add a few teaspoons of soy sauce then throw in the sunflower seeds and cook until coated in the sauce ( only takes 1-2 mins), you have a great crunchy topping for salads, soups etc. they will store well in an airtight jar and make a good snack for when you fancy crisps or crackers or just something salty to munch on. -
Did my last post register?

Bella51, i agree with Bill1954 that cauliflower mash is great – it’s tricked my head into thinking I’m eating normal mash. Mixed with butter and some grated cheese and pepper for flavour. Also peeled courgettes in strips (I don’t have a spiraliser) and then fried quickly. Enjoy your veggie experimentation!

Hi Leanne, welcome to the forum. Planning is the key to success on this diet so you’re off to a good start. Getting organised so that you always have the right food available will help you, you won’t be caught out grabbing something you shouldn’t have just because you’re hungry.
Many of us cook and freeze extra portions of our food so that there’s always something to fall back on. Making sure you take your healthy food to work, or out with you if you’re away from home at mealtimes will help.
Are you doing your own plan or following the one from the book? A browse through the recipes in the book and on this site should help you with ideas.
There’s also a thread called ‘what are you eating’ where people are posting their meals, that might inspire you a bit too.
All the best for Monday, and keep posting your successes so everyone can celebrate with you. -

on 11 Mar 2016 at 15:40 in Welcome to the BSDHi Hetty,
You are doing well sticking to the diet in view of all your health issues. Your wayward hormones won’t be doing you any favours so well done for persevering. I can only imagine how tired you must get with that level of blood loss and a demanding job.
You seem to be drinking plenty so I’m wondering if you could be relying more on carbs to fill you up instead of fat?
Sometimes it’s worth a quick check and a little tweaking there might be enough to put you back into fat burning mode.
Make sure you are getting enough iron in your diet too to replace what you are losing. Apart from obvious sources like liver, beef and seafood, there are dark green leafy veg, sunflower seeds, nuts, beans and tofu. I read years ago that having vitamin c rich foods with the same meal helps your body to absorb iron. So a squeeze of lemon on your cooked leafy greens, or a nice big salad with tomatoes and raw red peppers should help.
I wouldn’t be worrying about not getting enough exercise if your job is physically demanding you are probably doing more than you think. If you are anaemic you’d probably get a bit puffed out and dizzy if you overdid it anyway.
Keep posting and let us know how you’re getting on. There’s usually someone who can help. -
Hello everyone. I’m currently trying to get my head around this. Wrote down shopping list . Meal plan. Measurements. Hopefully I will be starting on Monday. My
Menu won’t be very exciting as it will just me me on plan and I’m kind of a plane Jane . Iv been sat here for about 30 mins trying to write out my
First weeks meal plan. All I have so far is Monday bfast. Greek yog and 13 blueberry 110 cals lol all help and ideas appreciated lol -
Well done jeff now another good day today and you are well on your way! Don’t worry about a bit extra chickpea chilli, you will still be very close to the 800 ๐

Hi blueplummy, so fantastic that your dr is on board with this diet, and well done on both the weight loss and the normalising blood sugars! ๐

Hi mosleyfan….you may have answered my stall! Post menopause issues…..ah well, guess if we keep at it the body will get the idea and give up trying to hang on to the extra! Well done on staying so strong despite no scale results. Off to try making some of those cheesy scones now, hope they are as good as yours ๐

Hi Holoso,
Like Maryr it would have been Fage full fat, tastes so indulgent! Have just bought a yog maker though and first batch cooling in fridge, used full fat milk, a little cream and Fage as the starter, a sneaky taste while still warm is looking like I may never buy yoghurt again, creamy, thick and tasty!
-
Interesting to see this, thanks for posting Fofi and everyone. I have just completed my first week….and while I am utterly delighted at a 7.5 lb loss it all happened in the first 4 days and has been stuck there since! Was discouraged this morning when still the same as I have been under 20 – 25g carbs daily with fats higher than protein….came back here for inspiration to keep my head down and carry on and have now got it thanks to you all! Happy Fast 800 whatever week you are in, look forward to seeing your results again soon ๐

I don’t normally feel the need to post on forums, preferring to just read the posts and take in the fab advice. However…I have to share my success after nearly 2 weeks in.
I’ve lost 2 inches off my waist and 9lbs in weight…the lightest I’ve been for nearly 8 years! I was diagnosed with T2 diabetes nearly 2 and a half years ago and have struggled to lose weight and control my B’S levels due to my lifelong carb and choccy addiction. Yes, I have struggled a little to get into the ‘zone’ but feel so happy at the moment that the weight is finally shifting and my levels are falling to within the correct range. I showed the BSD book to my GP on my last visit and she was happy for me to give it a go. Can’t wait for my next check up I May, hopefully I will have enough control to come off the Metformin.Just want to say that if anyone has any doubts…if I can do it so can you! ๐

If in UK then look for Lancashire Farm brand (Sainsburys stock it) in 1 litre buckethe. Natural full fat (ie 3.5% fat but not greek). Flavour is so good and smooth it’s the only one I wouldn’t even want to add sugar to. Pakeeza also good taste but sharp. Both these are much cheaper than others.
-
Well done Bob fox, you have done fantastic. You are among hundreds of people who have done what your doctor ordered, we all do.! Although I just had pre diabetes I was lucky enough to hear about Roy Taylor research from a friend who used to practice as a nurse and it was this diet was the best thing I have ever done. My blood sugar levels are nearly always into the normal range and I will never go back my bad way of eating.again. Keep up the good work.

Yesterday (Tuesday) was my first day of BSD Med. It went very well and I stuck to my plan except for eating a bit more chickpea chili for dinner than I needed. This resulted from eating too little at lunch time as I was ravenous when I got home. I have learned something and all in all see this as a successful start. I am happy to say that the sugar and junk carbs are, so far, not calling out to me-but I want to be vigilant and narc on myself here if they do. I have today mapped out food-wise and all systems are ‘go’ (fingers crossed!)
wishing all a fantastic day

Lucia, Great news on your beginning today! I wish you the best! Isn’t the full fat yogurt the bomb! It’s gotta be yogurt the way nature intended. I like that you are planning out your meals for the day. It encourages me to do that as I find if I get the plan in my head as in: ‘this is what is going to happen’, I tend to stick with it and feel ok about it. On the flip side, if I imagine or plan to have a dessert type food, it’s really hard to not have it. My mother always said I had a one-track mind, I guess she was right. ๐
XBill1954, Thank you for your support! I have read many of your posts, you have been an inspiration!
X
Hashimoto, Thank you so much! You are the best.

Frozen berries in Sainsburys basics range are much cheaper than other labels and vastly cheaper than buying fresh.
Red peppers also feature a lot. The roasted ones in a jar at Lidl are much cheaper than fresh and don’the go bad – jar lasts ages in fridge.
Perhaps if you let us know what sort of food you enjoy we can put our thinking caps on and come up with cheaper alternatives?
It would be a pity to stop now when it is clearly working for you! -

Yes I agree about being let down! I mentioned the study done at Newcastle Uni to my GP about 2 years ago. He basically poo-pooed it and told me I would always have diabetes and that it wouldn’t work. I’m due for an annual review in June so am hoping that I’ll have some good results to support my case!!

I haven’t bought any special things in for this diet. I’ve adapted to what I normally use, e.g. fish, chips& peas for family but my tiny portion is minus the chips and batter!! I haven’t followed the recipes as they’re not the sort of food I’d normally eat. I’ve bought a lot more berries though, balanced out by not buying as much chocolate based stuff!! Aldi/Lidl are both a lot cheaper than the others too.
