    Week 6 Day 1
Well I didn’t lose any weight or inches in week 5. I have stayed right on the program for 5 weeks and the last two weeks haven’t moved much but I am sure it’s do to traveling this whole time.
I am having to eat out daily and restaurants have more hidden calories and salt in their foods even though we only get fish and vegies everywhere we go.
Since we also have been having smoked salmon and berries for one meal each day the salt in the salmon isn’t helping with water retention either.
Yesterday we were driving for 8 hours so I couldn’t take my meds and am retaining water from doing so as well.
We get home Saturday night and I am excited to see what week 6 brings once we are eating our own home made foods.
I am not down because of this, another friend who is a doctor told me our bodies go into hold mode when we travel usually because they recognize we are out of our normal environment and so protect us by not letting us lose much weight when traveling.
Albeit my hubby and I both still lost weight the first 1/2 week of travel but both went stagnant pretty much after that.
We stayed on it totally and yesterday were even short calories and carbs.
More news next week. Just posting in case it helps anyone else who might travel and gets stuck.

    Hello Fellow dieters
Baristamum here. Very pleased to announce that yesterday and today seem to be back to normal. The feeling of needing to eat anything and everything, although not the slightest bit hungry has passed. Thanks for all the input everyone gave. I am finding soup very very helpful on this diet, especially the Tomato and Courgette one, on this website. The cals are low for the portion size, and it really fills you up. I have a soup maker and just chuck it all in and hey presto 20mins later, hot soup!! I try to keep a just of it in the fridge at all times, so there is always something available.
Beeswax123 – what ingredients did you put in your virtually calorie free soup? I’d like to make some
Glevesque – glad you are happy to hear our problems, I felt a bit bad after as I thought I had moaned to much, I genuinely wanted help to get over that sticky patch. The typing and reading helped as it stopped me from giving in and going to the cupboards.
Thischarmingwoman – hope your headache has passed, my daughter had one all week last week despite drinking loads.

Does anyone have any idea why my tummy is so bloated all the time? I know I have a grain and gluten issue, but I am NOT eating any.

My Blood Sugars Levels do not seem to be coming down as quickly as I thought they would, I had my Gall Bladder removed last year and was wondering if this would have any effect on blood sugar levels? Hubby is still convinced that I will give up (as I always have in the past) but when I feel myself getting weak and bread and the toaster is calling my name I think to myself ‘week 2 of 8 I can do this!’ Not feeling that hungry but I have never been a breakfast person, when I get to work I have a cup of hot water, another about 11am, then another half an hour before my lunch – which is usually an apple which I cut up into chunks and microwave for a minute and another cup of hot water half an hour after. When I get home from work I AM HUNGRY, but have another cup of hot water then…. you know the rest…have never done different dinner for family so am keeping this up but I give myself less carbs and more veggies!! and always eat with family at table. Good luck to all.

I have a shake for breakfast and I stick to either Optifast or Optislim Platinum from the chemist. Low cal and low carb and taste ok. Optislim Platinum needs to be mixed with milk, I use unsweetened almond milk to keep the cals low. I did see a big bucket of protein shake at Woolies the other day that was low cal and low carb, I think it was called Hydrox Protein or something. hope this helps ๐Ÿ™‚

    Hi Lise,
I’m currently on week 13 but on week 7 we had a week in Cornwall. I stuck to the BSD through sheer determination. My only slip up was a small pot of cashews which I scoffed before checking the cals. Not one pasty, cream tea or bag of chips passed my lips. I did have a poached cod one night – with no batter. I suppose as we were self catering I could plan meals more. I do remember that I took a packed lunch out every day. Even so, I suppose the majority of meals out would have been fish based – so they would have been fine with a little adjustment. Alcohol wasn’t an issue as I don’t drink. We did lots of walking too, averaging 6 miles a day. I would imagine cruise wise you could choose your food anyway. On the go is a bit more difficult as I’ve found it’s quite hard to find take away food that’s suitable for the BSD. If all else fails just get straight back on it after your holiday. Have a lovely time anyway!

Pleased you are enjoying yourself in Italy. What wonderful will power you are showing. Not sure that I could do that. I am a real italiphile with my food, learnt how to make real Italian food, even the pasta…cutting, layering, stuffing, the whole works. Living in Melbourne is very inductive for eating Italian but I have been extremely good and haven’t cheated even once. I have visited Italy 3 times and stuffed myself silly ! Managed to avoid the tourista food and found little hidden places to eat well and authentically.

Hello again all – 3 weeks now into my 800 cal diet.
Been three weeks now since i started this and must admit that i am getting results.. it is a bit difficult to weigh myself as i am wheelchair bound..(not many scales that will accomodate the chair ๐Ÿ˜‰ ). But i am feeling a bit lighter and clothes fitting a little looser so all good.

More energy on tap now, doing some weights from the chair.. slowly ramping the time and weight up each week.

A big plus on this tho is that i have stopped my glicacide tabs, as my sugars are responding to the low cal intake.. just on the metformin now..

Update… i went along to my consultant to have a post op review, and was able to weigh myself using the hospital equipment.. happy to reveal that i have lost 4.5kg so far. yep yep.

The medico’s question my doing this, but have very little to respond to me with, when i ask what could give me the same results, they just go back to the old adage of ‘lose little over time’ been hearing this over and over again for the last 6 years from so called Dietitian’s who, i feel are just spouting out what they have learned back in Uni..

So we keep on with what i have done so far… no breakfast, very light midday meal, generally 2 boiled eggs and some fresh tomatoes, lots of pepper, then a evening meal of around 300 cals. in general 500-600 cals a day.

I am not feeling to much hardship from this so far, i get the odd hunger pangs, but i ride through them. i am determined to follow through with this and maintain the diet untill i have lost 20 or more kgs…

this is doable, i am confident and already getting noticed from family and friends that i look healthier and more vital, so we keep on keeping on.

    be well all
    Wheelie

I am five weeks in with no slip ups, no alcohol, no simple carbs, eating delicious foods and sleeping better than I have for years. In one week I am travelling for more than a month to several countries and doing a cruise to boot. I don’t want to see a single kilo or centimetre of fat back and in fact I’m hoping to keep losing but I’m worried. How do I do it when I’m on the move? What meal choice should I make for the long flights? Your advice is most welcome.

    Hi all

I sometimes have to travel, and one thing which you can do is to buy from a local supermarket a packet of ham, or chicken, or beef slices, and some sliced cheese – I enjoy Emmenthal, but there are many alternatives – and then wrap the two together, to make a savoury roll which appears quite small but is incredibly filling. If you have the carbs available, these are also delicious wrapped round a half or whole small head of chicory.

Easy to put together in your hotel room! I was in Cologne last week, and enjoyed some local ham with some local cheese in this way, and the whole thing was amazingly satisfying.

    Hope this helps

It’s nice to read about your progress.
If the cravings are really bad do you have the calories available to have a small amount of full fat plain yoghurt or 30g cheese? Eaten slowly I find they can stem the cravings.
You must be counting your blessings that you kept your old clothes.

Hello Everyone (daughter speaking) I really admire you all, and those that keep going despite very slow weight loss is brilliant. The motivator for me at the moment is the fast loss! I’m starting my 12th day and I’ve lost 10lb and 8 oz. Just enjoyed smoked salmon and poached egg for late breakfast along with a latte….. I find the days when I’m not at work a lot easier, strangely enough.

Great stuff! You must be chuffed to bits with your weight loss? It was a great response from your friends and how lovely that they took you shopping instead of expecting you to eat their sort of food, if you keep to the bsd principles you can only do well.
I have twisted my knee so am a bit limited in what excercise I can do, (not that I do much) I swim and walk, walking is ok for a bit then it starts to ache, my knee, that is! I have also got a ‘virus’ great thing these viruses! You have no idea how you got them and no idea when they will go! Oh well, onwards and downwards!

Sounds like you are having a ball CaptainLynne! Really enjoying yourself without going mad, shows us all it can be done!

Husband + I won’t have issues with cakes, pastries or pasta as these didn’t feature much pre-diet and certainly not now; it’ll be the wine + breads which will present the threat! Mind you as we have ascertained that there’s zero tolerance on drinking ANY alcohol + driving, wine will be restricted to dinner time, when we do plan on sharing a bottle.

Lots of steps every day + some swimming should keep weight-gains within reason, am not expecting to come back the same weight as I go, but after 11 weeks in NZ, Australia, Singapore + Vietnam last year, I only put on 2lbs. Which considering how much wine was consumed over 7 weeks in NZ was a real result!! Taken a while to lose 2st, need to lose another 1.5 + am not going to shoot myself in the foot after all this effort!

I make ginger tea. Grate a large knob or 2 of raw ginger into a saucepan, add 1.5 litres of water, bring to the boil and simmer for 20 minutes. Leave to stand , I usually leave it overnight. You end up with a really strong ginger base. Strain it into a bottle and store in the fridge. Fill a mug 1/4 – 1/2 full with the solution and top up with boiling water. I find that fills me up.

Well you have done a great deal of research, and have lots of experience on what does and doesn’t work for you, most evidently. Fantastic to hear that you have finally established a regime which seems to be what your body responds best to – and now you are fat burning, which is what we all aspire to.

I very much admire your persistence, and willingness to do whatever it takes, to get things underway – it’s posts like yours which inspire people to keep on with the BSD (or their version of it), and make this such a good forum.

Thank you for your time in telling us what’s going on with you, and every best wish for your onward journey!

I decided that now was a good time to start as I have only myself to worry about! Certainly not hungry and I’m enjoying experimenting with what you can create on 2 rings! I FEEL as if I have lost weight…when I find some scales I’ll let you know. I’m in it to loose the weight I put on 10years ago …when I quit smoking. Fingers crossed this works.

Hi I’m nearly 24 weeks into this. I’ve had 2 residential conferences in that time plus a holiday in Prague. I’m on holiday in Italy now. My suggestion would be to stay eating low carb. Self-catering can be easier because you control what you buy, rather than having to make choices in hotel. I’m staying with friends. We went shopping for foods I can eat that they might not have in. They eat pasta – I don’t. It was ice cream restaurant yesterday, Nothing I could have and portions were huge so I had sparkling water. Not easy. But I don’t want to be ill again. And I don’t want to be ill in a different country.

After a dramatic loss yesterday, my weight is up 0.4kg again this morning – and I had a good day eating wise, so it seems illogical – I know its only a small amount, but it’s frustrating.
Overall, yesterday total loss was 4kg in just over two weeks, now only three and a half. My weight did hovver around the same weight for the previous week/ten days, so I’m not distraught about it, just trying to understand it better.

I did eat supper late – about 10.15pm but I did the same the day before
Always weighing the first thing in the morning
Probably a day without a lot to drink – I dd spend almost three hours in a queue (I had a bottle of water with me, but weather was freeing cold), then a further three hours in a theatre (still didn’t drink a lot of the water as I wouldn’t be able to go to the loo), but I did drink half a litre of water with my meal.
I probably had more exercise yesterday than normal – I walked about five miles, and went to an exercise class at the gym, albeit a fairly gentle one.
Oh well, I’ll have lots to drink today, see if that makes any difference

Portions were huge! Have to say the frozen yogurt with berries and cream on top looked great๐Ÿ˜ณ I was asked if I wanted some berries but didn’t know if they’d been soaked in syrup. Safe, not sorry! Was asked if 800 calories was too low/unhealthy. Just said I’ve been doing this for 6 months, do I look unhealthy? End of conversation. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ Friends I’m staying with are great asked what I can eat and we went shopping. They eat what they want and I eat what I want. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ I just need to get past being embarrassed and apologetic about situations like yesterday!

Thanks for the suggestions and advice Igorasusual. It is quite true that if you are burning fat it is probably from the areas around your middle and organs first…my problem is specifically…it is very difficult to burn fat for me and I have been tracking with ketostix for awhile now.

I have been using a phone app (from samsung) also for awhile now after it was recommended to me by a kind lady on this forum, so I do have a good handle on how much carb etc I was eating in my 600 cals to a very precise degree.

600 calories a day doesn’t get me personally into fat burning and I am extremely envious of those it works for.

I have really very severe insulin resistance obviously.

It seems I need to actually water fast on alternate days and that is now working for me. I am drinking coffee a lot! The good thing is the ketostix indicate the fat burning has really ramped up fast so my poor body haveing finally got the insulin down a notch is responding like anything. I am now almost back to the weight I was at a year ago. ๐Ÿ™‚ I anticipate no further issues.

I got the book The Obesity Code and finally got to the guidelines at the end…and am now following Jason Fung’s rather easy and clear fasting protocol to the letter…along with the FODMAP diet and Paleo guidelines!!!

It is a lot easier than it may sound.

This week I finally lost a smidge more than 2 kilos so am now FINALLY onto what will work for me which it appears is a little more exacting than the general but that’s okay…I really am willing to do whatever works.

It is very counterintuitive but it seems that a small low carb meal of protein and veggies every second day (water the rest of the time) is what it takes for my body to let go of the insulin levels and hence the fat starts burning.

My blood sugar levels are continuing to improve way beyond my expectations now, I am well into the “normal” range all the time except morning for a short few hours…so I am going to keep on with this and see if I can get to a healthy weight this way.

I have actually been controlling my diabetes with low carb for quite a while…but my weight has continued to be a problem. I clearly would have survived great famines in the middle ages!!!

I am certainly not metabolically “normal”…the problem with my insulin levels is well known to me and I have been keeping track of it now for 20 years, way before I was diabetic I was severely hypoglycaemic back in the early 90s…it has just taken years to get to the right protocol and information to change it, with a great deal of medical misinformation and misadventure along the way and diabetes 2 as a consequence. Better late than never and I am fortunate I haven’t lost my feet or had a heart attack in the meantime as so many diabetic mellitis people have.

It works better for me to fast alternate days than to do longer water/broth fasting too…no idea why! I am unable to find a doctor here to support me in this, however, I am doing pretty well on my own nowthat I am armed with the right information.

The meal replacements I tried and was very optimistic about due to the Newcastle study. They weren’t possible for me to continue with because I reacted quite badly to the lactose and wheat and possibly soy flour they contained ’cause I have IBS.

It’s unfortunate because they were supplied for an osteoarthritis study I joined (I got caught up in an armed robbery at my local post office 18 years ago which left me with buggered arthritic knees). That means I cannot any longer do much aerobic exercise but I am ramping up my step count daily.

It seems to me I am now on track. It’s way easier than I would have expected now I am here and am glad I am finally on the right side of the darn scales. I tell you, I was just about ready to bin them!

Like you, I’ve lost 1 kg in two weeks. But that is OK! My clothes are getting looser and people are noticing so I know that internally things are improving. The scales are just a number. I am not going to let that distract me.

The key to all of this is repetition. Just repeating the same good habits over and over. Results will come. Everybody and every BODY is different. Hang in there.

    Jussi,
Thanks. I have no idea how you keep so motivated after losing so little weight…It’s a sacrifice! I just finished eating three of those little chocolate bars one gets in the Cadbury’s Favourites box. A man came to give me an estimate on something and presented me with the box as a thank you. It sat on the counter all day. Then I had an overwhelming desire…They tasted pretty terrible after not having sugar for a couple of weeks. They didn’t have calorie/kj counter on them, but unless they are 200 calories each, I’m still under 800 calories for today. I know that isn’t entirely the point as I have to lose the weight to bring down my blood sugar level. Anyway, feeling happier now. I had thought that I had lost 2 kg over the past two weeks, but looking again at my stats and realizing I had lost only 1.1 kg, just felt rather unmotivated. Now I am ready to be a “good” girl again.

These are the targets I loaded into MyFitnessPal:

    Carbs 50g 25%
    Protein 80g 40%
    Fat 31g 35%

I’m vegetarian so it’s almost impossible for me to get so low with the carbs to be ketogenic (legumes have built in carbs as well as protein). I also hesitate with going too high with fat. I click on the little pie chart each day and I’m pretty happy if I’ve got rough thirds for the macros, even if the carbs are a bit over 50g. That’s still way lower for me than my pre-BSD days.

    Hello Everyone,

I’m a long-time lurker. I really appreciate reading your personal stories and helpful advice. Today I finished the 8 weeks with a 17.6 pound loss – this is while being a total couch potato. I’m trying to add some exercise now. I’ve decided to try the BSD 5:2 for awhile, slowly adding calories to the 5 non-fasting days. I’d like to be able to eat more fats.

My first goal is to get back to 178 (2 more pounds). This was my lowest weight since my 20’s (now 64), which I reached in 2011. I then gained back 110 pounds. So, this is my 4th time losing 100 pounds or more, and I don’t expect rapid weight loss at this stage of the game. I had started bingeing and gaining the week before I found out about BSD – it saved me going through that cycle again, hopefully forever.

I am amazed at how do-able the BSD 800 has been. I was sure I’d give up after a couple of days but somehow just kept going.

I am only a week into the Fast800 but really motivated as I already have lost some muffin top. There’s lots of great information on this forum from people who have been on the BSD for a while. A game changer for me was logging everything on My FitnessPal (on laptop and as an app on the phone). There’s lots of foods already on there and you can add recipes. In the past I thought I was eating right but I’m sure my portions were way to high – particularly on cheese. As you have already found out some things are more calorific or carby than we think.I eat lunch and dinner (suits my lifestyle) but there are lots of times I have to eat ‘on the road’ so I try to make sure I have something suitable to hand so I don’t make bad choices. I have found that my carb cravings have diminished. It’s not the first time I have tried low carb, but it’s the first time I have kept close to 800cals and I think that is what is making the difference.

Hi glevesque. You are not the only one. I am just finishing week 9 and my total loss to date is 6kg. Having said that, in the last 2 weeks my weight has gone up and down within 2 kgs but I have been plugging away – until today when I have completely fallen off the plan AND EATEN THE WORST CRAP EVER! I don’t know what came over me as I haven’t wanted to eat mindlessly since starting this 2 months ago. My weight loss has been utterly slow but I am fitting into clothes without them leaving marks on me (hah!) and feel much better. Not today though. BUT…… Tomorrow is another day and so, back on the plan. I keep carbs to around 20g and calories below or around 800. Water ….. Let’s just say I try but most of my water is mixed with caffeine. My one failing. So no stupendous weight loss for me. Some weeks there is nothing then a week later 1/2 kg loss. We are all different and for some like you and me, it’s slow and unsteady. I shall watch your progress with interest and hope I get back on course and can report success, however small. In the meantime I shall suffer the guilts for eating food I will not mention as the shame is great. I wish I could say I enjoyed it but I actually didn’t. Hey ho onward we go. Good luck!

I have had 2 babies in 2 years. I gained a lot of weight. Today I have officially lost 40 lbs since I started my weight loss journey in January. Im at my pre-babies weight. I have failed at this more times than I’d like to consider but I got up and kept going. I’m 17 lbs away from 1derland and I’m 35 lbs away from my ultimate goal. Don’t give up! I’m 4 weeks into this plan and it definitely works!

Congratulations! Eleven pounds the first week! Fourteen pounds in two weeks! That is amazing. How pleased you must feel about your ability to cut down and lose weight. I have been quite strict and taking in well under 800 calories a day with no sugar, bread, rice, etc. etc. and have increased my activity a lot, but have lost only 1.1 kg. in two weeks, so you can imagine how amazed I am when the weight just falls off others on this diet. I know I am doing everything right…wearing a Fitbit; avoiding the stuff mentioned above; weighing and measuring everything I eat and writing it down; keeping track of everything, but my weight is not falling off. If there is anything that I am not doing right, it is not drinking quite enough water. However, I actually feel thinner, even though I am not losing weight, and I am not going to give up…although I am tempted to take a day off this weekend. Has anyone else had this happen – I mean I’ve not lost enough weight to claim that I’ve hit a plateau! Please let me know if this slow a start means I should simply forget about it. I mean I will try to eat healthier than before, but geesh. Honestly, unless I am getting up during the night and stuffing my face without knowing about it, surely I should have lost more weight by now!

  • The BSD doesn’t specify counting carbs although what I’ve noticed reading posts is that staying under 50g per day seems to help with keeping the weight coming off. I found it easier the first week or so to concentrate on not eating sugar and cutting out grains – which meant that I often ate between 800 and 1200 calories per day for the first week and some days my carbs were over 100g. I soon got the hang of which foods were carb rich. I think this diet is much easier if we already love eating lots of vegetables!

    FiFiT,

My husband said that if you can go to Italy and not eat the wonderful foods, you deserve another trip !!
We have been there 3 times and certainly didn’t come back any slimmer, nor even stay the same.

    Have a great holiday,
