  • Hello all. Signed up some time ago and then completely freaked by eating cakes, ice cream, take aways! Bizarre! Never done that since diagnosed T2 22yrs ago! Anyway, finally sane again and trying 800 cals. Not a big eater but can’t fast as my IBS kicks in big time. Trying mix of home shakes and some food but on basis of 60carbs/44fat/40protein. Is this a wise mix? So far lost 6lbs in 7 days but biggest thrill is meter readings/insulin units. Am VERY resistant often needing 100+ units to cope with moderate eating and suffer badly with Dawn Phenomenon. BS commonly between 12-18 and sometimes up to 21 (god forbid if I have a drink or take away!).
This past week BS have been around 6-8 on 40/45 units of Humalog Mix 25!!! πŸ˜€πŸ™Œ I’m so thrilled by this, more than the weight loss – although I have 5/6 stone to lose thanks to NHS carby diet!
I want to try lower carbs etc gradually but could anyone advise if I’m eating relatively safely so far? I def need to add more veg as mostly using spinach/berries so far. Keen to get balance right.
Thanks in advance for any advice xx

    Hello Yowzer49!

12 pounds in 1 week?!! That’s just miraculous! Have you missed your carbs yet? I struggle cutting out carbs but still managed to lose 6.5 pounds in 3 weeks. It makes you feel lighter too doesn’t it.

So far so good. What do you think?

Do people stay on BSD for longer than 24 weeks then? I mean, could you do this for as long as you like – without starting to gain weight because you are in starvation mode?

Just thought I’d say hello! Trying to familiarise myself with this forum. I have bean used to fasting over the past three years but thought I’d give BSD a go after being inspired by a lady on our Fast Day forum who lost 2 stone in just the 8 weeks!! I don’t have so much to lose but have already lost 6.5 pounds in just the 3 weeks of 800 cals a day.

I’m not as strict as you guys on here. I just keep to 800 cals but don’t worry so much about the carb count. Having said that, I have given up bread, pasta, rice and caffeine – so I don’t want to go mad all at once! I have ME/CFS so doing the BSD is also my way of finding a method of recovery!

I must say I have found BSD pretty easy to follow so far – but maybe I should lower the carbs!! πŸ˜‰

I’m only ten days in,and haven’t found it anywhere near as difficult as i expected. I was dreading it really but its actually fairly easy so far – first day i had cravings but they do pass. Ditching the carbs really does help curb appetite and cravings! Ive lost 13 1/4 pounds in ten days.
Hope yr first day/ first week goes well for you ! πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»

  • Hi Jennifer

My suggestion would be to have a small high protein shake or something you do not have to cook – hard boiled eggs even – mid morning and then your main meal with the rest of the calories. I have always been a dreadful dieter because I got hungry and on this one, now in week 4 It does not really bother me, I think because I can have a small amount of nice food later, not cottage cheese and celery sticks!

Remember Dr Mosley although pre-diabetic was not very overweight. Captainlynne is our poster girl, but there are others who have gone on longer because they had more weight to lose. I know a couple he formerly diabetic she not who have lost 50 and 40 kilos respectively on VLCD and kept it off for several years.

    Good luck
    Ruth

  • Thanks Orchid, and very good luck to you too.

Just to advise, I hit 9 stone yesterday and – omg – 8 stone 13lbs (56.7kg) this morning! I don’t think there has been an 8 in front of my weight for more years than I am able to tell you…my teens certainly.

I am now upping my calories to 1200 per day, increasing my carbs to 30g within this, and the calculator I use (http://keto-calculator.ankerl.com) says that I should have 76g of protein and 86g of fat. Will still be monitoring this on MFP as I do find it helpful in seeing what I’m eating. May be inventing some more ‘favourite’ meals, and including more veg over and above the spinach, chicory, courgettes, peppers, tomatoes which are my go-to staples.

I will keep you posted on how this all goes.

And please, anyone reading this, please take heart and further confidence. If I can do this, you can….hold the faith. In a very few weeks you may be looking back in incredulity as I am, on what seems like a small miracle in your life….

Let alone OH with his 5.5 blood sugar reading and halved Metformin.

    Hi Eric (Chris)

    Two possibilities occur to me

    1) is he losing via measurements? How are his clothes fitting? Looser? Does he ‘look thinner’? Sometimes it’s that the fat is going from the visceral stuff round the organs, and then the weight seems to plateau whilst you’re actually getting thinner.
    2) are you keeping a count of the carbs you’re eating? I know you’re following the BSD no ‘bad carbs’ i.e. no bread, flour, rice, potatoes etc., but it does seem that restricting the carbs you eat within the 800 calories can ‘jump-start’ weight loss.

If you use an app like My Fitness Pal, you can check the carbs, fat and protein within you calories. Then you can target under 50g of carbs per day (this seems to work for most people here) within what you’re eating, and that will certainly help your OH lose weight.

Apparently some people are ‘less tolerant’ to coping with carbs and changing their metabolism to burn more fat from their fat cells – so maybe you are able to cope with what you’re eating in terms of carbs, and your OH isn’t?

I know when I started this I was eating too many carbs within my veggies and was surprised to see exactly how many. It changes what you choose to eat when you have MFP telling you how many carbs there are – I decided, after looking and being astonished, that I would swerve apples and just not have any during my 8 weeks. I preferred to spend the calories on less carby things!

My OH and I are operating on 20-30g of carbs per day (you can experiment with this to see what suits you under the 50g I mentioned), and have seen very good success.

    Hope this helps πŸ™‚

  • Hi Jennifer

I started out at 224 pounds on 19th December.

I’m not aware of any muscle loss, and my recent blood tests were fine, even showing improved kidney function as well as blood sugar in normal range (latest HbA1c was 5.2, in April it was 5.5, January 8.7, December 9.6). My blood pressure is also normal.

Do you test your blood sugars? When I ate porridge my blood sugar spiked, but I know other type 2s who can eat it without any problem. When I started the BSD I went back to testing after different foods so I knew what I could eat without spikes.

After 31 weeks of low carbs I find I don’t miss them.

As I approached the end of my first 8 weeks I asked the BSD team about staying on 800 calories. Their response was to stay on it for another few weeks as long as I felt OK, then move to 5:2 or Mediterranean style, low carb.

But I still had lots more weight to lose and wanted to lose it as quickly as possible so decided to just continue with 800 calories. I was seeing the diabetes nurse monthly so she could monitor my progress and make sure I wasn’t doing anything silly. I also records everything I eat, together with all test results.

The nurse and her colleagues were doubtful about the sustainability of 800 calories, of of sustaining the weight loss after reaching target weight. Well, I saw the nurse on Thursday. She’s now telling other patients about the BSD!πŸ˜ƒ

I’m no expert. I just decided to treat myself as the subject of an experiment. At starting, I thought I could just try it for the 8 weeks, then I wondered about continuing for a few weeks. And just continued. I feel so much better in so many ways that I don’t see myself eating those carbs again. And I used to eat huge quantities of bread, pasta, etc 😱

    Hi
Yes that feeling of control is marvellous, I also struggled for many years with an appetite I had no way of controlling, but take out the carbs and sugars and hey the appetite goes amazing isn’t it. Amongst my clients I have a few older super models, and they advocate this way of eating to keep slim, knew just never practised it. What a waste of time huh. Never mind we are all here now and it works.

    Hi
Planning is key to success of this eating plan I have found. An excellent app to use is myfitnesspal, counts everything, communicates with others, so getting tips, also has a scan meter top right of search bar to scan foods exactly. The recipes in the books are an excellent guide, but for precision , I calculate it all myself on this app as the counts of the recipes are sometimes way of . The no carb Bircher for example actually has 38 carbs, so be warned, it would be okay at first I am sure, but after time your weight loss would slow down as you wouldn’t be following 800 cals and 50 or below carbs. Keep up the excellent work, download the app as it will make life very simple, and keep letting us know how you are doing.
Just imagine when you next get on a plane to see your lovel son, you I’ll have so much more space in your plane seat.πŸ›¬βœˆοΈπŸ›«

  • @captainlynne

It’s quite impressive what you have accomplished. Wow 31 weeks of 800 calories a day. I read Dr. Mosley recommended switching to 5:2 after 8 weeks, why I am not sure. (I wonder if he thinks it might somehow be detrimental going on such a low calorie diet for much longer than 8 weeks.. wasn’t made clear.)

So you’ve lost 78 pounds that’s amazing. How much did you start at? I started at 422 on May 9th, I am 379 now. Have you experienced any muscle loss at all?

I know I could easily do 18:6 intermittent fasting eating those 800 calories in a 6 hour window. I’ve been doing that with the 1600 calories LCHF and often it’s hard to remember to eat those extra 800 calories for dinner before 8pm. If I tigthen the window to 1 or 2 hours, then I get less hungry and could easily do 800 I am sure.

I like the idea of eating only 800 calories a day because I can incorporate some more healthy carbs into my diet without affecting my blood sugar much due to the very low calorie nature. So I might be able to eat 1/4 cup of oats or 1/4 cup of lentils form time to time etc. I like the use of omega 3 rich fatty fish and lots of olive oil. Mediterranean diet sounds really healthy. I just want to try out all the recipes in the book looking at them.

Sorry, I’m not vegetarian, so when I ate at Heathrow I had a cooked breakfast – no hash brown or toast.

On my way from Kings Cross to Heathrow I checked all the food outlets and finally bought a salad at Pret to eat at my hotel. Back at Kings Cross after my holiday in Italy I ate at the Italian restaurant on the station, ordering the steak salad.

Can I just add that it’s not only what is available, it’s also portion sizes. A few days ago I went out early, planning my usual ‘eat out’ small breakfast. But where I went is closing today and was opening later than usual that day. So I went opposite, to Patisserie Valerie 😱

I ordered their cooked breakfast (no toast) and coffee. When it came, I wished I had my twin 8.5 year old granddaughters with me. That meal would have comfortably fed the three of us😱 Far too much on the plate went back, I just could not eat it.

I’ve found recently how many hotels/restaurants serve huge portions. Not good for us, or for their profits.

  • Hi Jennifer

Each of us finds the way that suits us. I’ve just completed 31 weeks on 800 calories, very low carb, losing 78 pounds so far – still more to lose.

What I’ve found is that eating low carb has meant I no longer want/need to snack. I eat breakfast, then my evening meal as I’m not hungry inbetween. The protein and full fat products really fill me up.

It’s surprising how much food you can get for 800 calories when we cut out the carbs and processed foods.

The other thing I’ve done is to stop drinking diet fizzy drinks. Now I still drink black coffee, but otherwise it’s water (fizzy, or still with sliced of lemon and lime).

I was type 2 diabetic (diet controlled) but now my blood sugars are right down in the normal range.

I think my suggestion would be to follow the plan as in the book and see how it goes. After a few weeks, if you wanted to, you could change from eating 3 meals a day, to 2 meals. I know one meal a day would not work for me, I’m happy with 2. Personally I’ve not needed to snack, but that’s just me. As I said, we’re all different and find our own way of doing this.

Jump in, you’ll know from reading the posts that it works. And record everything.

    Let us know your progress.

Well I went to the do and had a few drinks, since starting this I can’t drink as much so feel a little delicate this morning! It was a good night and I did really well at the buffet, I ignored the sandwiches and had a couple of very small chicken skewers, a couple of cherry tomatoes with mozzarella balls on sticks and some peppers and cucumber sticks with hummus so feeling quite pleased with myself.

We were on a boat, we were sat downstairs and the food was upstairs so when the desserts came out I didn’t go up to see what there was so no temptation to eat anything I shouldn’t, only a small victory but I feel like I am proving to myself that I can be in control and an added bonus is when I got on the scale this morning another couple of kilo had shifted so I’m now 7.6 down.

Still a long way to go but this is the one time I can visualise myself doing this for the long term.

  • Hi JenniferG

Welcome onboard and congratulations on the great progress so far, you must be feeling really proud – and justifiably so. Wonderful that you are already off your meds and seeing real health improvement.

I’m not aware of anyone doing the Fast 800, who is just eating one meal of 800cals a day, although though there might be and I have missed their posts. Quite a lot of people do two meals a day – a brunch late morning and then an early evening meal and are not seeing any detriment by using this eating pattern. Personally, I would have thought this would be a better way of doing the 800 with the least meals, rather than just one meal a day, but I’m not an expert.

Hopefully someone will be able to give you a definitive answer regarding eating just one meal a day on the Fast 800. Meanwhile, hope we will be hearing how you progress and will be reading more great results from you soon.

Just checking in here to say it looks like I want to lose between 8 and 14 pounds to reach target. It depends on how I feel about it as I reach 9 stone 12 pounds. I quite like the idea of my weight starting with a 9 πŸ˜ƒ

As the medics have decided my height gas shrunk by an inch, my BMI has changed and it’s now 9 stone 6 pounds from 9 stone 11 pounds 😱 But there are so many variations, depending on which site you visit, I’ll go with how I feel/look.

But when I get there (wherever that is) I know it will take a few weeks to stabilise anyway, so could still lose a few more pounds anyway.

Ay Caramba – you asked about eating Mediterranean style, still avoiding carbs. All I can say is that’s what I have tried to do when away from home. After a residential conference I stayed the same, after 10 days in Italy I’d lost 2 pounds. So I think that Mediterranean style, low carb is, possibly, enough. But I also watched portion sizes (one of my downfalls in the past)

    Hi carrierman

Firstly, welcome to the BSD and the forum. Great to have someone else onboard and revolutionising both their eating and their lives. You seem to be very focused and determined and wonderful to see you are already seeing such positive results.

Like you, I weigh everything and where there is no package nutritional advise, I use online website http://www.calorieking.com to find a calorie and carb figure – you can adjust the result to be a 100g value. If they don’t have the item (it’s an American site and doesn’t have everything we eat in the UK), I will try doing an online search for the nutritional values of the item concerned and haven’t had a fail yet, there is always somewhere offering the info.

I am currently tettering on the brink of dropping from overweight into the healthy BMI band, but it seems to be rather illusive right now, but with the BSD I find it’s easy to stick with it and I’m confident it will all happen, if not as quickly as I would hope.

Keep us all posted on your progress. Make the most of the forum and do shout if you hit a problem, there is great support on here.

End of week 31 and another 2 pounds has disappeared, making a total of 78 pounds πŸ˜ƒ Weight now 10 stone 6 pounds (down from 16 stone).

Getting close to my (as yet undecided) target. Possibly another 8 pounds, possibly a few more. But I’m reviewing it week by week.

I’ve just been checking some sites for ideal weights and most of them are just unrealistic. The lowest I ever reached was 8 stone 7 pounds – I’d been ill, and it showed😱. My face looked really gaunt (or drawn, or haggard) – not good. But the body was fine – never worn a UK size 8 before or since! But some sites are saying I could/should go even lower than that! Errr … no!

So I’ll keep on going week by week until I decide I’m where I want to be, where I feel comfortable.

So – I’ll check in here next week. Then – drum roll please – I’ll open the new clubhouse. The ‘over the 32 week’ clubhouse πŸ˜ƒ Please don’t forget that the target weight clubhouse is also open πŸ˜ƒ
