Hi all, I’m starting BSD tomorrow. I finish nghtshift at 7am, will go home and sleep until noon and then I begin. I have been encouraged by reading lots of peoples posts on this site. It’s great to see so much success. I have at least 20 kgs of fat to lose along with a quite high cholesterol level and it’ll be wonderful to have lots of energy again too. I know it will be hard, but I wont starve to death. Might get a bit cranky though.

  • hi 54andfatnomore,

Great results mate, keep it up, im doing my big weigh in this sunday which will be end of week one for me, tried the fasting thing today and just ended up having dinner, surprising held up ok. Managed to stay of coffee for a week now, and have stayed off my bad pepsi max soft drink habit for a week too. cheers

Type3 (does that mean something), you don’t say what your blood glucose readings are, or more accurate, your last HBA1c. You don’t seem to have actually started the diet so my advice would be to record your bloods and see how it goes. Most people on here have reduced metformin and I have reduced gliclazide from 90 to 60 because that is the drug that can cause hypos. My doctor insists I stay on the Simvastatin, at least until he sees my cholesterol go down a bit further (I am at 3.2) and he is adamant I should not stop my blood pressure tablets. I also take insulin and I am used to messing with it, go out for a meal add a couple of units, see my b/gs go down then reduce by a couple but on this diet I had a quick reduction in b/g (from 190 to 120 in 5 days) so started to reduce the insulin 2 units per night every other night until I am now on 26 (was on 37). Then the Gliclazide. Don’t try to do too much too quickly.

I would not advise you to mess with your drugs but I would advise that you take it slow and try to get your doctor on side by proving you have reduced your numbers and he will have to give you better guidance on the meds you are taking. When is your next HBA1c, when do you see your doctor again, you might have to make an interim appointment, also losing weight is a good sign that you are being serious and that might convince him. It is complicated.

I looked for this thread to post a question – but the posts have already given lots of answers.

I have been on the progesterone only pill for about 2 years (switched from microgynon when my BP was too high and put on BP meds). For me that has meant no bleeding at all, lovely considering I am on them because of painful heavy periods rather than contraception.

I started BSD on 1 Aug and had a day of bleeding/spotting. Then last couple of days I am having a full heavy bleed period. The info about oestrogen in fat being released into the blood stream makes sense to me. I have lost about 9kgs.

I was trying to google forums about the meds, but should just have come straight here!

Hi Holly, I have just had one of my favourites, tuna and cream cheese dip with veggie sticks. In the book it is sardine dip but I hate sardines. Whip it up and take it in a tupperware (old name) and chop a load of veg (red peppers, celery, cucumber, carrots) into strips and stick them in a plastic bag. No need for plates or knives and forks, just dip the veg in. Yum

  • Jaynepateman, sorry to start on a negative but ditch the fruit teas as they are too sweet even if it is not real sugar it has an effect on the body (someone will come on and tell you what it is called). Also no fruit juices. Green tea is good as it is real tea whereas are not tea at all.

First of all read the book, I hope you have it, then stock up on fresh veg, lots and lots, my staples are red peppers, courgettes, cauliflower, celery and I eat raw spinach more than Popeye. Fruits should be limited, too much sugar again, try blueberries and raspberries (I buy frozen) with an occasional melon to go into a breakfast drink. Plan your menu so you know exactly what you are having for every meal. Drink lots and lots of water, 2 ltr per day is good. Put on your determined face and be prepared for a diet that is going to change your life – and that’s no lie. It is difficult but worth it. Browse through the posts and you will pick up hints and tips and see the results people have gained. For me lower blood glucose, less insulin, less glicazides, lower cholesterol and triglycerides.

Enjoy and post and ask as many questions as you want.

  • Hi
I am about to start the 8 week blood sugar diet in the hope of pushing back my type 2 diabetes. I have read the book, brought a spiralizer, found some natural fruit tea that I like and I now feel ready for my new adventure any tips would be gratefully received

Well done 54 … Keep going!

Hi I’m having Indian tonight as well but will steer clear of the chana masala that I love. Last time I had chickpeas and spinach it turned out to be full of carbs so tonight will just be chicken tikka and salad … I’ll be clucking soon !!

Can anyone suggest some ‘on the go’ lunch ideas? I’m often at home for lunch so can prepare something, but I have quite a few days coming up when I will be either in the car or in someone else’s office and want to take a packed lunch. Something that is easy and quick to pack and can be eaten on the go? Thanks!

Now, now, everyone on here knows I DO NOT weigh myself! But suffice it to say that my jeans are still getting slowly looser, even on the maintenance BSD ☺️ Plus my body instantly tells me if it doesn’t like something naughty! Don’t like feeling ‘blughhh’ and makes me wonder how I ever got through so much junk in the past!!

  • Hi everyone, I’ve just read his thread from the start and it’s wonderful to see so many newbies giving this way of eating a go.

May I offer some advice? I’ve had the benefit of everyone else’s advice for the last 20 weeks and I’d now like to pay it forward!

Some stats before I start. I’m a 56 yo post menopausal female, 168 cm (5’6″) who started out at 89.9kg (BMI 31.9). This morning I reached my goal weight of 63kg (BMI of 22.3) after 20 weeks and 2 days. That’s a loss of 26.9kg (just under 60lbs), nearly 30% of my starting weight!

    My tips:
No added sugar – at all, and that includes honey, agave syrup etc. there is NO healthy sugar!

Drink 2-3 litres of non cal fluid per day. A lot of mine comes from herbal teas.

Aim for 10,000 steps per day. I got a fit bit to monitor this.

Weigh and measure everything and log it into a calorie counting app. I use EasyDietDiary.

Keep your complex carbs to under 50g per day.

No simple ‘white’ carbs eg potato, rice, pasta, bread etc. NONE!

Most veges that grow under the ground have higher carb levels than those that grow above the ground. Just be mindful.

Be careful of what fruit you eat, check the carb levels on your app before you eat it, apples are particularly high. Berries are good.

Stay away from ‘lite’, ‘low fat’ foods, eat full fat everything. This is important, you have to keep your fat levels up in order to go into ketosis.

Treat this NOT as a diet, but a new way of life and embrace it, don’t fear it.

In the first week, you may experience some headaches or aching limbs, brain fog or other symptoms of carb ‘flu’ from your withdrawal of eating carbs. Be kind to yourself, take some Panadol and ease your way through it, once that goes, the fat will keep you full and you won’t get hunger pangs.

I find that monitoring the forum helps me stay motivated and on track.

Lastly, remember, if you fall off the wagon, be kind to yourself and just get back on.

Good luck everyone and keep posting, it really helps.
    Cheers
    Linda

  • Hi can I join in? I don’t have the book yet but I’ve read loads on the web and I think I’ve grasped the general principles. Am due to get the book (and accompanying recipe book) in a few weeks, when the recipe book comes out. But I’m keen to get going now.

Weight currently (Friday 2 Sept.) 87.9 kg (was 88.5 kg on Tuesday), height 155 cm. Looking to get down to 65 kg initially (weight I was when I was 15 – eek!) and then see how I go, as that is still too much for my height. But it makes a good intermediate goal for me. Not diabetic (yet) but my partner is on Metformin. I have a bad hiatus hernia, so that is my health issue and a very good reason to lose belly fat. I did once get down to a ‘normal weight’, but this was only after a year of walking nigh-on 8 hours a day. Unsustainable when you have a job, especially mine, which involves sitting at a computer all day.

Am really glad to have some company on this diet. My partner talks a lot about losing weight but he’s a carb addict and shows absolutely no intention of giving up bread (his all-time fave carb), despite being on medication. I’m hoping to inspire him with good results. My failing at the moment is fruit and especially melons: I’ve got lots in my veg patch and they’re all ripening now. Will do better when they’re all gone, honest!

As the weeks go by, do we add to this thread? I’m a total newbie at this, so apologies if that’s an obvious question. Any advice on buddying-up would also be welcome.

Hi Avila, well done although I agree it’s not the way to lose weight!!

Linda – I think your plan to stop logging all the calories and intake and just relax about eating is the way forward. I’m living my BSD life in this way now and it works perfectly. As you rightly pointed out, it’s now very difficult to overeat so you don’t really worry about over indulging. But it does mean that you can allow yourself the odd treat safe in the knowledge that no carb disaster will strike! Good luck and onwards 👍🏼

Hello everyone, I need some help!

Wednesday, I weighed in at 63.5kg, this morning, I’ve dropped that last .5kg and after 20 weeks and 2 days, I’ve now reached my goal weight of 63kg with a BMI of 22.3. That’s a grand total loss of 26.9kg which is just under a 30% loss of body weight from my starting weight of 89.9kg😀👏

I actually feel a bit ‘lost’. I’ve really enjoyed this journey and have embraced this way of eating and increased exercise and have not found it difficult and now it feels like I’m losing my best friend😂

I had planned to continue with the same food and simply increase my calories, but I’m just not that hungry and it was eating too much that got me into this mess in the first place!

As I’m not diabetic or pre diabetic, nor ever have been, I’m wondering if I should introduce some more carbs into my diet to increase the calories or just try and increase the amount of fat. What I do know is that I don’t want to reintroduce sugar back into my diet.

    Any suggestions???

The other thing I’m thinking is to stop recording everything I eat on my app and just eat when I’m hungry and stop when I’m full. I’m going to have to learn to do that at some stage anyway. My other thought is to increase my cals to 1600 for the next couple of weeks and to weigh in only once a week and see what my weight does. If it stabilises, then I know that’s the level I’ll have to try and stick to. I don’t want to do what I’ve done before and put it all back in again.

Any advice would be gratefully received!!
    Cheers

    Janey,

No need to worry about the BSD wagon – was so stressed that was beyond comfort eating and in fasting mode, on the day only managing a veggie broth that already had prepped, and yesterday another portion and a fried egg. Not to mention the additional running trying to catch her on Tuesday. So ‘raw’ weight this morning was 90.8kg. (start at 99.7kgs, 5ft 10)

Not a recommended way to overtake willpower weaknesses.

    Hi ruthdownunder,
You seem to be very knowledgeable, I have decided I will relax this week, then next week when everyone goes back to school I will get back to the diet proper, 800/50, and then according to the dr, I will lose the last half stone to reach my target! Then I will decide if I am happy, I will reassess everything. I did find that while I was on the first plateau although I didn’t lose weigh, I found my shape changed and I could get into clothes I haven’t worn in years, so there was positive outlook.
We went to the memorial arboretum yesterday with the granddaughters, lots of trees there! We even painted four ‘soldiers’ ready for the celebration? of the 100 years since the first day of the Somme, where nineteen thousand two hundred and forty one soldiers died on the first day! It is an art installation and the public are asked to paint a soldier, they are then varnished and put into the ground in a particular shape, not sure what the shape will be yet.
Anyway I digress, onwards and downwards and thanks for the very interesting info, here’s hoping it works this next session.
    Christine.

    Hi frog,
You sound a bit like me, I lost over two stone, in the first 12 weeks, then the dreaded plateau! I too was away a lot and only put a couple of pounds on, then lost it, then put it on! I then relaxed for a bit, didn’t put too much on, a couple of pounds, then at the beginning of August I went strict on myself and lost the next half stone, to make the total loss two and a half stone, then I was at the doctors who suggested doing another relax, as I was no longer pre diebetic.
So that is what I am doing, I have decided to re-start next week when everyone is back to school, ( my three local granddaughters and my daughter, who starts her course next Thursday) it will be easier when they are not around during the day!
We have been out and about for a couple of days so I need to catch up on my programmes, I will watch trust me I’m a doctor hopefully later today when I have done the rest of the jobs for the day.
Good luck with your next aim.
    Christine.

Thanks a million for the tips everyone. You know something, I have actually done some of these things in the past, and had forgotten! – like the bath and the spoon of peanut butter …but my brain sort of shut down and refused to recall anything helpful! 😅. I’m going to write a list of crave busters and pin them to the kitchen cupboard today as I woke up worried how the day will pan out… I’m going to have more protein later in the day Wilma and going to weigh out portions of nuts as lifesavers Bissell.
You’re right Avila there is no worse a combination than a crappy day, a serious craving in the middle of a shop then you spot that yellow sticker 😁🔫 my last purchase like that was a ginsters Cornish pasty. I don’t even particularly like them and I told myself I’d freeze it …how we kid ourselves! 😅
Have a good, crave free day folks xx

Ooh I love a red lentil dal. Haven’t had one since started BSD. Might be OK for an occasional treat. It is difficult working out uncooked to cooked weight. I had the same thing with mushrooms, the cooked weight was half the raw weight and I wasn’t sure which to count but then worked out they were both pretty low so I didn’t worry about it.
I have people coming over tonight for a takeaway curry. I will be good and just have my chicken saag, no rice or naan, although there is a recipe for naan with garlic butter on the diet doctor.com website which claim 3g carb for two pieces. I may give them a go if I get time.
This weeks goal: If I can lose 4 1/2 lbs by Wednesday I will have lost 10% of my body weight.

oh and I forgot! I tend to graze mindlessly when I have nothing to do/watching television etc…so next week I’m going to get back to yoga classes…there’s classes I can go to every day (I have a monthly pass), and if I go straight after work, then I have less time to eat crap at home (and I’m less inclined to as I feel all healthy and good)

Not everyone has the time funds or inclination to go to classes all the time of course…there’s a very good online streaming service called Ekhart Yoga, you can sign up and try it for 1 Euro for a month, after that it’s 12 euro 50 a month but you can cancel whenever. It has hundreds of online yoga classes from very good teachers and also beginner courses if that’s your thing. They work on computer, tablet or phone. Well worth a go if you like (or would like to try) yoga 🙂 and as I say less time to eat things haha!

Hiya Claire, Leasko and all who are struggling this week 🙂

Add me to the list…I have been very patchy the last few weeks, had a bit of bad news and diet just went off the rails completely. Chocolate, traybakes, gin, crisps, pizza – you name it I ate it 🙁 At the start of the last two weeks I kept saying, Right, time to get back on track, but I fell back into old bad habits…chocolate from the vending machine at work, something sweet when I had coffee, etc…not big things but they all added up.

So, I need to get back on track too – let’s encourage each other 🙂 What helped me last time a lot was posting here regularly and also keeping a food diary, so I’m going to get back to doing that.

I read a great book a while ago on willpower and self control – written by a psychologist – it’s excellent and she has lots of great tips for maximising your self control. Not your average airy fairy self help book, this one is practical and is backed by proper science 🙂

It’s called The Willpower Instinct, you can buy it in paperback here:
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Willpower-Instinct-Kelly-McGonigal/dp/1583335080/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8

This particular edition doesn’t have a Kindle version, but an earlier edition (exact same book, but it had a slightly different title) has a Kindle version if you prefer that :
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Maximum-Willpower-master-science-self-control/dp/0230761550/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_sims?ie=UTF8

Anyway, my tips for getting back on track (which I must now start adhering to myself!!) are:
    – reread the BSD book (especially the inspirational stories of people who’ve done so well
    – read the forums for inspiration too
    – post regularly about my progress to keep me focused
    – put everything I eat in my food tracker (Myfitnesspal for me)
    – keep temptation out of the house (or hide it if it belongs to someone else – my boyfriend has bread so I put it away so I’m not tempted)
    – drink lots of water
    – give myself a weekly treat as a reward for good compliance that week (nails done, a book, some makeup etc)
    – I keep a few cals a day to have a small treat like yoghurt and berries in the evening so I don’t feel deprived

They are different for everyone of course but that’s what helps me!

Good luck everyone, let’s encourage each other to get back on the horse

    kxx

    son’s bed about £300
Cost to get car through MOT £330
cost for the big service it needs about £250
cost for timing belt about £300
Son has his birthday in October as well and then it will be christmas!

I’m trying to remind myself that we have all we need and although it is going to be tight for the rest of this year really, by next summer my son will be heading to school and our childcare bill will reduce a fair bit.

If I wasn’t so far away from my family I’d get rid of the car, it’s an expensive luxury when I have the van for work. I just can’t imagine not having a car though and having to get to my family in a rush. It takes 90 minutes to drive but would take 3 or more hours on public transport with at least one change. I’d miss it for my stone circle and castle trips too but I’ve favoured spending my free time in my den recently anyway lol.

Enough of the complaining, I’ve dropped my son off for his morning at nursery and I’ve just had a BSD friendly pudding for breakfast lol. I had some double cream that needed using so I whipped up 4 tbsp cream and added 4 small strawberries, a little sweetner and a few dark chocolate chips. It was lush – expensive for calories at 311 but only 7.3g carbs 🙂

Old diet habits die hard, I’m sat here feeling like I cheated – but actually there was nothing wrong in having that for breakfast, it’s only that we are conditioned to view it as a pudding, a treat, something naughty. It was no less healthful that my usual yoghurt or shake, and a few chocolate chips in moderation are surely fine.

We had cauli pizza last night topped with tomato puree, chorizo, pepperoni and cheese twas yummy. No idea how many calories that was mind you I didn’t count. Not sure what to have today for lunch or dinner – I’ll go rummage I think. I’ve been a bit disorganised lately.

Well I’ve got a set of coasters that need varnishing so I better get along. I’ll post a pic on my blog later 🙂

I want to have another go at a phoenix as well I’ve watched a tutorial for painting a hummingbird and I thought I could modify that a little to make a nicer phoenix than I managed last time.

Seriously I could lock myself up there for about a month and still not get through the list of things I want to make and paint! lol. Such fun it is though. My escape.

Dog update – following advice about police process is that this would unlikely end up in court and if did would probably be a muzzling order, not the death threat the farmer implied. If rehomed the charity would advise any new adopters to keep her muzzled -so same fate, and after a long chat with their behaviourist she will adjust better to a muzzled life with me than in kennels stressed. So unless police intervention she gets to stay with me but restrictions – though i have found 2 places about half hour drive from me where you pay to use a big field that is totally secured for free running.

I actually think you’re wrong, StringHaven, in that most people don’t in fact know how to lose weight. Which is why it is so frustrating to see doctors simply telling patients to go away and do it.

People in my view simply divide into two sections:

those who try to eat well and add in vegetables, try and cut down sugar, and eat recommended healthy options
    and
those who choose lots of pizzas and burgers and other things they enjoy and don’t worry too much about healthy stuff as they think it won’t be nice.

The first set of people keep listening to advice, and eat wholegrain bread, 5 portions of fruit and veg, cereal in the morning. They think, because they heard it some time ago, that too many eggs are bad for you, and that low-fat is the way to go. If anything else is mentioned as a ‘good thing’ they’ll try it. They may be overweight, because generally we all eat far more calories than our bodies need and it goes on year by year.

If they gain weight, it’s because they are eating far more refined carbs than they realise, and are experiencing the ‘spikes’ and ‘falls’ which lead them to eat more refined carbs, as Dr MM explains.

Those people have no idea how to lose weight, because if they try eating less of what they already eat, they get the ‘carb’ hunger and feel terrible because their hormonal response demands the carbs for energy, rather than burning fat cells.

The second set of people are already in the dreaded ‘spike’/’fall’ syndrome and will suffer even more, so that eating less is not really an option for them. Some of them may be fat but malnourished.

The good thing about the BSD is that it explains how to change the hormonal response to food. Yes, it asks for fewer calories because it is helping get an immediate weight loss response to encourage its participants to continue. But for most people – definitely not all – the hunger is not so bad as they expect. And the body’s hormones start to switch to gaining energy from the fat cells, rather than demanding more and more carbs to burn.

I appreciate you know this, you’ve read the book.

But I don’t believe many doctors or nurses know about quitting refined carbs, although there is now a great deal of research about the value of low carb diets. And I really don’t think most people have any idea how to lose weight – it’s a certain amount of commitment, of course, but if what you eat continues to make you want to eat more, because of a hormonal reaction, then it’s not much use calling yourself ‘greedy’ is it?

You have only to walk round any public place to see how many people don’t know how to lose weight. Because i believe many of them would love to, and they’re not ill-educated or greedy or insensitive to their shape.

And to say that there is good evidence to support almost everything? Well, I do disagree with you there. It depends on your definition of ‘good’ of course.

    Hi
    Yesterday wasn’t the best!

    Had a couple of blips

    Hi

Had a bit of a blip yesterday and am paying today with a gain of 1.2lbs!!!

Just had a couple of ginger oat biscuits yesterday but went out last night. Thought I was OK , had greek salad with feta and half a portion of chicken kebab ….. no pitta, potatoes or rice but still a gain! In some ways it’s good because its made me realise how very careful I’m going to have to be when I go away!

A little warning of things that could make me stumble!

I just logged on to fat secret, how can I change the calorie daily level to 800? I looked in settings and could see how to calculate it but not reset it, is that possible?
Also, when I clicked on the link, it sent me to the mobile site and then the App Store to access it.

Hi Switzerland – when your name popped up at the to of the list I thought I hadn’t seen any posts from you in ages – great to hear that you’re doing well and 5:2 is working out for you.

Claire I am struggling too x (and have thought the same about you renaming the thread😂) I have read Bissels wise words of encouragement and it’s made me rethink the Frosties that were calling to me from the cupboard! (I know people will be shocked that we even have Frosties in the house but my slim partner brought them for a sleepover party the boys had on Wednesday night). Bissel, I have meant to say, too am a nurse 😃

I’d got to the point that I was thinking that I might start again on Monday, (boy’s back at school) but you have spurred me on NOT to give up x I have avoided the scales during the past week…. but plan to go and stand on them. (I feel like this post is a bit like Scot’s last letter?! If I never post again it’s because I have put all the weight I have lost on!)

Not a lot of posts for 5:2 BSD in ages. So here goes.
I am enjoying the 5:2 BSD lifestyle. It works for me. I continue to lose weight, albeit not as dramatically as BSD800, but I can really manage this lifestyle.
I incorporate regular exercise and also take time out of my day to focus on mindfulness meditation.
I commenced this journey to improve my health and just as it’s become second nature to eat low carb med style, I view exercise and mindfulness as things I do to maintain my health. The exercise and mindfulness are not yet ‘second nature’ but I’m working on it.
What are you doing to make your journey a success? Please share.
