VERANO if its any consolation, youve helped me a little today!
Its over ten weeks since ive had bread too and altho i havent wanted to eat any( in fact,a little scared to eat any of the things i havent had for ten weeks – which in itself isnt that great is it…really makes me feel i AM an addict and just imbibing one crumb will send me mad!) …
anyway have been very curious as to how it might feel to have some bread after the weeks without …i sensed it might be like you said..very very heavy in the tum
Well you’ve lived and learned! And youve satisfied my curiosity for me too!
I guess if we are ever to introduce SOME bread into our menus ( if only to stop ourselves from making bread into a huge big deal) we may well be happy with a little nibble or two..not too bad on the carbs and not heavy on our tums…rather than massive doorsteps – thats what i used to eat anyhoo XX

Today I had bread!!!!
This is the first time in over 10 weeks and in part maybe I just needed to see how it would be!
Had a huge urge for rollmop herrings and just needed bread to go with them! So had some French baton, not a lot , with butter and a few tomatoes.
Was it good?????? No, not really! Taste was ok but not really any more satisfying than little gem boats would have been! Left a really heavy feeling almost like I’d swallowed a lead balloon or at least what I think it would feel like had I swallowed a lead balloon!!!!
Then of course I put it into to Fatsecret …. can’t even report the number of carbs of calories here I’m too ashamed!!!!
Surfice it to say I won’t be doing that again!! I know that we all have to make our own mistakes but I urge you, if you need bread etc. please check you carb/cal counter before you eat it , may just save you from yourself!!!!!

ANTIGONE they sound lovely. I do like a crispy crunchy cracker..well done stopping at one – not easy! X
Saw my GP today..she’s lovely. She was apologetic that she wasnt well up on BSD,but is keen to learn more and was very complimentary on how between 5:2 and BSD i ‘ m attempting to improve my health.
I deliberately didnt take mybp meds this morning, and GP was impressed that bp reading was pretty good tho not perfect without them. I have forgotten the figures now but my bp a while ago was sky high without meds.
Sent me for blood tests and appt made to see her again in about ten days
She said her only worry was the very low cal count, tho was reassured when i told her what I mainly eat these days. was i getting enough vit c to absorb iron from my food was a concern. She advised strawberries for vit C seeing as i was having berries every day…didn’t have the heart to tell her that they are quite Carby! X -
Had a meeting with ‘lunch’ at end – turned out this was a fish n chips order. I was very good asking for fish and mushy peas – no chips. Confused the list maker but when the ‘small’ portion of chips turned out to feed a family I was very glad. Once something is on my plate I am much more likely to attempt it – something to do with when it was not easy for my family to get food on the plate, so don’t waste it once it is there etc – but everyone was struggling with the chip portions.
Ok so I did have the batter with the fish but compared to what I might have consumed….

Lost another pound so that’s 9 altogether,I’m really happy, just have to keep going.I’m really enjoying halloumi cheese,I dry fry it with tomatoes and it keeps me filled up for a long time.Have just had a litre of spinach soup, just onion, spinach and a stock cube,it looks like green sludge but tastes OK.There was half a massive bag of spinach to use up so decided to make it into soup rather than just eat it raw.
Natalie, the surgery got rid of the fibroids. My hormones went to pot when I was pregnant and these huge fibroids grew,as a result my son was born at 26 weeks.I got them removed 4 months after the birth. The Dr said I probably wouldn’t be able to have more children as the operation was very extensive, took out loads of fibroids. He said there were 7 the size of a mans fist,5 slightly smaller and dozens of pebbles.I went for tests and everything was working and we had 2 more sons, the fibroids never came back.I wasn’t allowed to have a natural birth and had elective sections 3 weeks before my due date as he said my womb would rupture if I went through labour.I recovered quickly from the surgery, have a huge scar!I’m sure your operation will go well . -
Hi Tiredofthis
You have taken the first step by finding this group and the second by starting on the journey!!
It can seem daunting at first but I think the advice to adapt current meals is really good. Also, checking carbs can be an eye opener but if you try to concentrate on them rather than calories at first the calories will soon take care of themselves!
One of the most difficult parts of this eating plan is to take on board ‘full fat’! We have been so brainwashed by ‘low fat’ for years that to have full fat yogurt for breakfast seems alien. But actually it has less sugar, lots of low fat foods have sugar substituted for fat, but full fat keeps you fuller longer. Lots of people have full fat Greek yogurt and a few berries or nuts for breakfast.
Cauliflower seems to have become the new ‘best friend’ of all on BSD … take a look at the thread ‘101 ways with cauliflower’. Just put it in the search bar at the top of the page. You’ll be amazed what you can do with cauliflower!!!!
Spiralisers are also popular especially for making courgetti spaghetti … great for putting bolognese on instead of pasta ! Must admit I would never eat courgettes but they are great used as spaghetti and sometimes I just toss them in a homemade tomato sauce with some Parmesan cheese grated over them.
Sorry hope I’ve not over faced you with food ideas but best of luck on your journey

It’s weird how the scales vary from day to day. One kilo in 2 days is stunning.
The growbag to gourmet course sounds way better than the dodgy diabetic course. Was at eye clinic today. Retinopathy and oedema still in remission. I started BSD to reverse the oedema – which it did in 8 weeks -but it is now all about the joy of getting thinner

The application procedure may vary from one GP’s practice to another, but essentially you sign a consent form – I downloaded the form from my GPs website, filled it in and dropped it off at the surgery.

on 15 Sep 2016 at 16:09 in Welcome to the BSDHi Snoop – sounds idyllic!
I have vague recollections of the toxic oil thing – I wouldn’t have remembered it was rapeseed, but understandable that people in Spain are a lot more aware – AND give it a wide berth – even 35 years on! -
So out and about this afternoon (in France) we found a Netto supermarket. They had a shelf of various crackers made by Sigdal Bakeri (norwegian) – these included Spelt, oat and sunflower seeds. 48 calories a cracker but 3.something carbs and really tasty! The first non vegetable crunch I’ve had in weeks. I had one cracker with 20grms of cream cheese (50 cals) for a late lunch 🙂 Yum

Hi Flash – welcome.
There are lots of us around who have done more than 8 weeks on the BSD. After 38 weeks I’d lost 92 pounds, taking me one pound below my target weight.
I was type 2 diabetic and had back and mobility issues. Now blood tests are normal, mobility much better and much less pain.
You’ll get lots of support on here. Any questions, just ask.
-
Claire – very very very well done.
I am likely to be nicknamed on this forum Igorasusual HAVE YOU MEASURED. Because that’s what I’m always saying.
Because whenever you plateau – and as ruth says it’s really often – you need to check what’s going on in your shape. I discovered that my waist measurement was going down and I could see rather more of my ribs than I was used to when my weight was stubbornly at a halt. I theorised that it was the visceral fat vanishing (why that doesn’t weigh the same as ordinary subcutaneous fat, don’t ask me, I haven’t a clue).
So check your clothes – you may be really surprised.
And keep on – you may find one day with a few more calories than the 800 will kick your body, but you are right it is changing. Give it a chance, bless it, be kind to yourself. You’ve had such great results.
🙂

Enjoy 🙂

on 15 Sep 2016 at 15:06 in Welcome to the BSDlucyjane – what are your MEASUREMENTS doing?
Have you measured at the start, and if not, do your clothes feel looser, is your belt a notch tighter, does your face look slimmer? Have you got some target clothes to judge by.
I think the weight gain could be to do with all sorts of things – water, your ‘digestive transit situation’ ( 😉 ), muscles – and also it seems when you are plateauing quite often the visceral fat is going and so your waist is getting thinner.
So test the measurements, can’t emphasise enough. Many people go through this, don’t get discouraged.
If necessary, don’t weigh every day, and just carry on day by day. It WILL work. 🙂
-
Welcome to phlebas and Norfolkgal – some great results from you!
I don’t know if my thread ‘Not too much to lose…’ (can’t quite remember the whole title, but you can find it using Search top right for my username and the title) might help. I posted on it again relatively recently.
I lost 26 lbs in just over the 8 weeks, starting at 10 stone 8 lbs and ending at 8 stone 10 lbs (aiming for first of all 9 stone 4 lbs, then 9 stone, then thought I’d give myself some wiggle room and got to 8 stone 10 lbs). More than 15% of my starting body weight. I’ve got a small frame and am 5’4″.
Also feel absolutely great, and can confirm that more than 4 weeks in from finishing and on maintenance am still at 8 stone 10 lbs this morning. And that was after a visit to relatives yesterday which involved a glass of wine and some sourdough seeded rye bread (which I was pushed to try).
Good luck 🙂

on 15 Sep 2016 at 14:55 in Welcome to the BSDHi Frog,
I live in north-east Spain and am surrounded by olive trees. My usual oil is the local oil which is fantastic. Not well known because there isn’t much of it and most of it is consumed locally. The exported stuff seems to go to mainly to Italy. The locals have their own views on what the Italians do with it… Anyway, that is what I tend to use. It’s only ever sold as extra virgin, but the supermarkets sell refined olive oil from other areas at much lower prices.
I personally have never seen rapeseed oil in Spain. I don’t imagine there’s much of a market for it here either following a disaster due to rapeseed oil treated for industrial use being sold to the general public. See the following story for information, though some researchers dispute the finding that the deaths were caused by rapeseed oil and believe organophosphates were to blame:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toxic_oil_syndrome
Either way, consumers still look askance at rapeseed oil. -

Not sure where you’re based, but in the US rapeseed oil is called canola oil
Also, on the BBC program “eat well for less” a couple of weeks ago, they were talking about cheaper oils and one brand of vegetable oil, when they showed you the ingredients “100% rapeseed oil”. – and it was a lot cheaper than the rapeseed oil.
I think the monounsaturated oils are supposed to be best for you – so if you do start looking for vegetable oils, don’t go for a blended one that is predominantly rapeseed. Sadly, I can’t remember which brand it was, but they do always stick with things from major supermarkets. so it shouldn’t be too hard to track down.I’m really lucky – one of my friends has olive groves in Turkey and Cyprus and imports the oil here, so I mostly use that
It always gets great reviews, and Jamie Oliver’s company tried to buy it for one of their restaurant chains.

Hello all – I should probably start my own thread about my journey but – I’ll just keep on this one if that’s OK. Day four and i’m OK. However, I’ve realised that shake for breakfast (melon, blueberry, spinach and almond milk) is going to be a no-no – I have no idea how people manage on the meal replacements – I miss actually eating. I haven’t really been hungry but have been more obsessed about food than the other days. I did jump on the scales this morning….5lbs off….in three days…WTF!!! So delighted with that – seriously motivating and I can feel myself getting healthier (definitely all in my head by positive mental attitude and all that)
Hope your journeys are all going well xx

Yeah!
the Growbag to Gourmet cookery was brilliant – lots of cooking with seasonal vegetables, and Halloumi
the soups had some potato in,, so I just had a couple of spoons (I ended up making one of the potato soups somehow, so felt I ought to taste it!), and chard stalks were fried in breadcrumbs, but I estimate only about a teaspoonful on the couple of pieces that I tasted.Given that this course wasn’t aimed at diabetics, tons more sensible than DDCC!
I do feel stuffed because I was sat in front of some left over chard – and all of it was delicious, but stuffed in a good way, rather than DDCC tons of beans and lentils way!I had to estimate the quantities that I has, but I think around 21 carbs and 276 calories (that sounds very precise, but just the result of plugging everything in to FatSecret)
Sadly the growbag element (gardening) clashes with Kayaking at the moment, but they are planning to move the time slot, and they’ve just recruited someone new who is going to be involved with developing gardening a the centre and lots of other community garden projects in the area.

on 15 Sep 2016 at 14:15 in Welcome to the BSDThat was interesting, Chookymama. I read this story from Trust Me I’m a Doctor and only took away the line that olive oil is a good compromise:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/3t902pqt3C7nGN99hVRFc1y/which-oils-are-best-to-cook-withI should really have looked at the chart. I can’t get rapeseed oil here, but I can get refined olive oil, which looks to be better for cooking with than extra virgin. Cheaper as well.
Fascinating to see that butter comes out so well!

My mini goal is to get to under 230 pounds, which should happen within a week as i only have 3 1/2 pounds to go. I just bought a whole bunch of new knickers with a gift certificate ….. so my other mini goal is to bin those and fit into the pretty ones i have had for years!!!
Right now i only have one pair of regular slacks/pants that fit and they have been mended at least twice. I do however have about 10 pair of slacks that i will fit in when a loose just a bit more … maybe 10 pounds. I do have a new set of capri length new pants and new pants that look like pjamas but were cool for summer … only wore those for 2 weeks and they are going to be donated.
Of course my next intermediate goal will be to get to under 200 pounds ………. what a celebration that will be!!I’m currently planning non food rewards … massage, pedicure, etc.

I have not eaten bread for 5 months. But, if you need to, use oats for bread.
Spelt is easy to digest, but still has gluten in it.
Or you could tell the Pillsbury DoughBoy to stop eating his products!

Hi phlebas. I have also started BSD recently after doing 5:2 a couple of times. I don’t have a lot to lose, I seemed to be stuck at 11st 2lbs after doing the 5:2, and am aiming at 10 st. (5ft 7in, 62 years old). I record my calories on Calorie Count web site which I have been using for several years off and on, but they recommend low fat and ‘good’ carbs, so I am ignoring all that. What do other people use, I have seen mention of my fitness pal, is that a good one? I am toying with getting a fitness band, but not sure which would be best for me.
I have lost 4 lbs since 9th Sept which I am very pleased with. I think I need to concentrate on keeping carbs lower, have been around 70g per day, but managed to hit 58 yesterday! Got caught out by cashews – 6g in 20g of cashews! Going to change to almonds in future.

Hi, Flash21! Your own thread certainly helps accountability when you commit to writing in it everyday – good or bad (see my mistake below!) Good luck to you too!
Right, yesterday’s stuff:
DAY 2/56
BREAKFAST: (11am again) omelette, chili, onion, 10g reduced fat cheese, 1/2 grilled tomato. Splash of skimmed milk in tea.
LUNCH: not really. I had planned a Greek salad but I wasn’t hungry at lunchtime. I had a lot of running around to do in the afternoon, though, so I took 1/2 apple, a piece of cucumber and 30g feta with me to nibble on.This came to 117 calories. Just as well, because later…..
DINNER: homemade bolognese (using 500g minced beef = 5 portions), 220g courgetti, 30g reduced fat cheese. Really lovely!
Would have been great at:
Calories: 735 Carbs: 32g Fat: 41g Protein: 56g Fibre: 7g (too low)But…..couldn’t resist joining hubby with some red wine, and, later on because of that, I succumbed to a piece of garlic bread that he had left. It was yummy though!
Final score:
Calories: 1425 Carbs: 74g Fat: 49g Protein: 60g Fibre: 8g well, at least it increased my protein and fibre! Lol!Exercise: busy day, mostly in the car. 7,700 steps.
This morning, down 0.2lbs. Phew!
I’m going to get going with more exercise today. Planning a nice walk at lunchtime! -
Hi ruthdownunder
It’s a great book isn’t it?
I read it close to when I started on this plan and it was a fabulous incentive to avoid sugar/fructose.I’ve also since read his book ‘Toxic Oil’ about the dangers of polyunsaturated oils v saturated fats and ‘Big Fat Lies’ about what the world’s health systems and big business knows and is not telling us.
Can highly recommend!

Hi Shaun
I think we all have our irritations with the medical profession – but “why do you want to lose weight?” if you’re clearly overweight and it is causing health issues – takes the carby biscuit!
Good luck with it, hope it goes well for you
I didn’t have a particular issue with blood pressure, but did notice when I was looking through test results yesterday that my blood pressure has reduced from several readings around 127/80 a year ago, to typically being 112/69 since BSD and losing weight.I’m a bit of an evangelist on this at the moment, but if you don’t have it already, do request online access to your patient records – some GPs have had it for a while, but under new NHS guidelines all should be providing it now.
It’s brilliant:
You get to see blood results before you meet or discuss them with your GP or diabetic nurse, so you can formulate the questions you want to ask in advance of the appointment.
You don’t have to try and memorise key numbers during a rushed appointment.
You have permanent historic records so that you can see your progress. You might want to think about changing your GP too – she sounds a bit rubbish 🙂

Hello Yowser!
Thanks for your welcome 🙂 Wow – 2 stone 8lbs in 9 weeks is absolutely amazing, congratulations! I’m pleased to hear that people think it’s easy to do this beyond the typical 8 weeks. I like the idea of it being a lifestyle rather than a diet. “Diet” just sounds horrible and restrictive! I’m already a Fage convert – it’s great and does seem to keep me going. I tend to have it with some berries which makes for a good breakfast, or a smaller helping as a snack. Butter on greens – now there’s an idea I can get on board with! Must do better at drinking water though. Moving around is currently quite difficult for me but I get up from my desk every hour and pace the corridors. Soon I will try walking to and/or from work. I did give that a go a few weeks ago but my back isn’t up to it yet 🙁 Am loving reading through the forums. Collecting up lots of tips and being inspired by people’s journeys and successes! Thanks again for your reply 🙂

Hi there,
I’m now on Day 4.
But be aware that GP’s are not all friendly. I need to lose 3 or 4 stone, or if I want to get down to my ideal weight (probably 6 stone).
I went to see my GP on Friday as I’m on blood pressure tablets. The first thing she said was why do you want to go on ad diet??? I tried to explain the BSD, but she was having none of it, saying that none of these diets worked. Not what I needed it, but that has now giving me the determination to succeed. I will lose 3 stone minimum, and I will keep it off.
Good luck & think of a slimmer healthier future !
-
Welcome Tired – I’m new to this too – just day 4 for me today – hope your first day went well – keep us posted xx

Likewise, Elaine. I’d never have thought I’d feel so satisfied on 800 calories. When it’s good food, it’s a real pleasure and I’ve easily turned down temptation (so far). One of the other benefits I’ve noticed is a significantly improved sense of smell, probably from not drinking alcohol. And how much better I feel and sleep for that!
And yes, three cheers for Michael Mosley!

Hi lucky
So good to hear your weight is still going down, I’m not happy with up either as I got completely unsynched when I was out of signal for a week in Norfolk, so had to desynchronises with another email address so lost friends etc. But broken strap not good as on mine I can’t replace the strap, I think I might just go for one of those simple little fob watch type ones, as they are less likely to break.
Hope Norfolk is good, but pitiful connection abilities for some reason well it was wherever I went. Lol

Yeah – I’m sure that 1 and a bit will be doable in a couple of days
Although I measure in kilos mostly, the big 3 is my next target – 2 kilos to gonot so good for me this morning – I’ve put on 0.4kg for no apparent reason. Not too stressed about it after the 1.4kg the day before – net over 2 days its still a kilo, and 0.4kg is less than a pound. Would have helped if I’d been more active though; I’d had good intentions of going over to Hampstead Heath again, but it was just sooooo hot.
Busy day today – gym, another cookery class – Growbag to Gourmet , so vegetables rather than DDCC, then going over to meet a friend in South London – I’m not sure if we;re going for a walk or going to Dulwich Gallery (or both).
I think the community centre has a gardening project that I could get involved in, hence the growbag bit of todays cookery; I did meet the woman that runs it at the normal monthly cookery class the other week, but only got talking to her at the end of the evening, so I ‘ll find out more about that today.
My main desire to have a garden though is more about somewhere to sit with Tea in the morning and afternoon and a glass or wine in the evening, rather than digging stuff!Froglet enjoyed the roof garden so much last night that I might see if she fancies going up there for a bit before I go out.

Hi everybody, just a quickie! I’ve been awol due to a combination of internet problems on my PC (not my only way to access this but the easiest for me!), being very up and down health wise (up today, thankfully!) and rushing around like a blue arsed fly trying to make sure we’re prepared for this wedding on Saturday, routefinding, packing, ironing, thinking of food options because although I’m not starting panicking about food while I’m there, there’s a difference between being sensible and being stupid. The wedding day itself is going to be pastry laden, carb laden and sugar laden. And probably alcohol laden. I don’t have to go completely daft the other three days. So on top of everything else today a spelt loaf and Nigella cake will be baked. I will reply properly later. But also wanted to say, my UP band is completely kaputski. While camping the clasp went. It held together with insulation tape until a larger chunk snapped off. It then held together with a hair bobble until another chunk of band snapped off. I’m not a happy bunny with UP at the moment!
Laters! See you later when I’m packed and ready and chilling with a coffee! 92.9 kg this morning! It’s creeping down bit by bit by bit 😀 Doesn’t seem like yesterday when the scales went down into double figures from 100 kg plus! Have a good one!

Frog
I was the same – I don’t think I had any concept of hungry. When I started BSD on 1st May the one thing I thought I would struggle giving up was my cappuccinos. I absolutely adored them and had 3 a day. The best one was at breakfast – I would sprinkle it with a teaspoon of chocolate charbonnel flakes (that is after eating 2 more teaspoons straight from the tin). A homemade fruit smoothie would follow (while making it I was eating frozen fruit straight from the packet). This was followed by peanut butter on a paleo recipe slice of toast. After all that I was often still ‘hungry’ and would have a couple of pieces of dark chocolate.Today I had an avocado and a hardboiled egg (or part of a hardboiled egg as my Labradors absolutely love a little bit of egg) then a nesspresso coffee with a teaspoon of double cream. I am full and couldn’t eat anything else and won’t be able to for hours.
BSD seems to completely re-educate you. I love my coffee now – it tastes like real coffee not coffee flavoured milk. One day – when I am braver – I will input my old breakfast into fat secret just to see how many carbs and calories it contained
