Hi Ruthdownunder – I am so envious. It is a really wet morning here in East Anglia in the UK. The rain is seriously heavy

I find find bread is the one thing I imagine I could still enjoy. All the rest don’t have that allure.

Husband has a breadmaker and he sets the timer so that the loaf is freshly baked for breakfast. As the delicious aroma of the baking bread wafts around the house a little battle goes on in my head. Surely organic wholemeal flour can be that bad for you! Luckily the BSD wins as I know that even one slice would massively spike my blood sugars and it is not worth it.

Numi – You are right that we should all give ourselves a pat on the back as we are all on a much healthier path than we were on before.

    Hi Old blue jeans

I recognised the Phantom fat thing you mention. Sometimes I feel so light as I move it feels a bit strange as if I may leave the floor and float off. Other times I can’t see a huge change when I look and wonder what all the fuss is about. Years ago I heard a tip to help decide your body size and whether to diet, paper bag over the head with eye slits, you see your shape in a totally different way. I’ve been thinking to try it on the skinnier version. Today I caught a look at me in passing, by not looking at my face it looked like a good healthy shape to be. No paper bag needed after all. I guess we all take time to adjust. I’m loving the security and confidence that I am here to stay, no other diet has given me that.

If there was a charity accepting donations of excess skin I have a bit to give.

It seems that skinny jeans and jeggings are IN this season folks, I bought a few pairs and will wear them 64 years old or not! I did look for tailored slacks, the ones I wanted to wear and look trim in all those years when I was taking whatever I could find in the elastic waist aisle.

Captainlynne – yes you are so right – the tortoise did win in the end. In a way – the slow weight loss over the first four months was so good for me because it gave me time to really embed the BSD principles into my life and I only needed to tweak things a bit to get faster weight loss since beginning of September.

I am with you about retirement not being a word in my vocabulary. I want to carry on working well into my 70s (I am 68 now) and before BSD I was facing the prospect that diabetes complications would force me to retire quite soon which really upset me – or probably devastated me would be more accurate. So thank you for leading the way – it has been so good to follow in your footsteps.

    Hi Ruthdownunder
It is strange what we still fancy and what we could happily ignore isn’t it. With me it is bread that I could still imagine I would enjoy. I haven’t tried and according to lots of people they find it makes them feel quite grotty when they do have it. But it still lives in my mind as a tempting food where pasta, cakes and potatoes just don’t have that allure.
Well done on your current weight loss though. I’ve been doing some faffing around too but like to think that we are certainly on a more healthy path than we used to be. So that is worth giving ourselves a pat on the back for 😊

  • Hi Nettle

Congratulations on maintaining 😃💐 And on the size 6!😃💐

Now I’m starting to feel interested in clothes – the fashion fairy has been busy!

I’ll be looking for clothes in Italy. 😃 My friends live in a small town so I might just ask if we can go to a larger shopping town. Or I might check out the clothes in supermarkets. I have choices 😃 Maddalena knows I want to go clothes shopping and she’s looking forward to it. Not sure about Antonio though LOL

    Hi

Californiagirl – I’ve been trying to find clothes for a trip. Might just have to look again when I’m in Italy soon😃

Frog – it never fails – whatever size I am, that’s the size missing off the rails! Regular shops or charity shops, its the same!

Like you, I’ve seen the point of jeggings. For £2 in the charity shop, it was worth the risk. And I love them! Just wore them to a conference 😃 Colleagues very surprised !

  • Hi CaptainLynne

I’ve been off the air for 9 days on a sunny beach holiday with two nearby huge malls begging for shoppers. We did justice to both. I walked 10 to 12 km a day, swam, worked on the outdoor gym equipment set out along the prom. Many steps logged in the malls. My body clock kept me 3 hours ahead therefore I woke every morning at 3.15, sun was up soon after, the walks started by 5am with a brilliant pink sunrise for inspiration. Early to bed at the end of the day and sleeping well.

The good news is that on weigh in this morning at home, no loss, no gain. I think that spells MAINTAINENCE. I didn’t count, ate well,
enjoyed everything but stayed on plan. I think that is the value of my extending the 8 weeks over a few more rotations, appetite and tastes have changed completely.

The fashion fairy flew my way too after dealing to you, she let me try a size 6, that’s SIX. It is here with me and supplies endless smiles when I pass its not going away in to the wardrobe just yet. My OH decided it could possibly be upside down, he doesn’t understand girls sizing. Most of the other is 10 and 12. If you could be arrested for loud noises of delight in changing rooms I would have been run in. Several times I had to ask for the next size down, those words out of my mouth…novel.

You are well prepared for your next Italian jaunt having had an earlier trial, now you are even further embedded in the new way of being. Nine stone nothing out and back. Get used to it.

But now I wear jeans 😃 And, I found a pair of size 12 jeggings in a charity shop. For £2 it was worth the risk. And I love them!!!!!😱😃

  • Verano – that is puzzling but it has happened to me also – the good thing is that it suddenly sorts itself out and the weight drops again. Who knows what is going on inside our bodies – it could be retained water – it could be muscles building. But at least we know that week by week we are beating the carb monster and the diabetes monster so that in the future they will never again harm our bodies.

    Hi everyone.

For someone who wasn’t interested in wearing jeans (who, me, at 66?), I’ve been wearing them for a few months. But now, more than that! I picked up a pair of jeggings (size12) – and I love them. I’ve just been at a conference and surprised even myself at how different I felt. Walking down the length of the hall in jeggings – and heels! The phrase “strutting my stuff” did come into my head 😱

Tapatch, you never know about your husband. I started the BSD a few weeks back, but not my OH, who is prediabetic. But I let him see what I was eating and that I was really enjoying it. He grasped the general principles and started talking about it being a good idea. I weaned him onto it by cutting down on some of his carbs. And just over a week ago, he joined in. He still has more calories than me (a small bowl of porridge in the morning and maybe a few almonds and a glass of wine with dinner occasionally), but he is far more active than me. In the ten days, he has lost lots of weight (visibly thinner round the face and his shirt buttons don’t seem to be straining so much). This morning he told me he’d had some great dreams last night, including one in which he had lost loads of weight and seemed younger.

You don’t have to proselytise much, just keep saying “yum” and “delicious” a lot!

I agree 1 day at a time. Had a bad day yesterday as big family get together for my grandson’s 1st birthday. But I decided right if I’m having a bad day I will get it all over and done with in one go! But it taught me the things I was craving I didn’t actually want or enjoy! Which I believe is a great milestone!, hopefully you agree. So back on it today! And as to the future I know that swapping to 5-2 helps to keep the weight off. Good luck folks 👍

  • Hi KrysiaD ( and Verano) don’t worry about losing slowly. Remember the tortoise and the hare 😃

Hi Ruth – me, retire? Doesn’t seem to be a word in my vocabulary at the moment. Either on the BSD or in ‘real’ life! I’m sticking with the BSD principles, trying to slowly increase calories while still watching carbs. Perhaps it’s good that I’ve been away from home so often during my journey that I’ve developed coping strategies along the way 😃

In ‘real’ life, I hope to work until I’m 70 (another 4 years) – but then continue part-time!

Part of the reason for my BSD journey was to make me as healthy as possible to achieve that other goal.

Day Seven completed, first week done (in Australia anyway). Feeling better this evening. I was coding dinner into my CalorieKing app and wondering why the butter chicken had so many carbs. It’s a recipe I had plugged into the app ages ago. Looked up the details and I’d included the rice I would normally eat with it! Have adjusted that, which means I also had less calories and carbs than I thought yesterday.

Finished today on 722 cals 47 carbs. Very proud of myself that I’ve got through a whole week with only slight slip from plan, considering stuff going on. Have I ever gone a whole week without chocolate before?

  • DAY 6 of 7

    Yesteday
    Calories792
    Carbs 27.8

All sounds good BUT put on!!! Just 1lb but not the less a gain. Can’t really explain it although I have had a few ‘over’ days this week maybe they have just caught up with me.

So, I’m away now for a few days so no more weighing, of any type, until Wednesday!

I will still be around but from Tuesday, as this challenge ends, I’m popping back to 2nd 8 weeks…. for the last week of 16 so one last push in the last week!.

Then time to re-evaluate the situation. I will be carrying on. I have my diabetic review in two weeks and I really want to carry on with the Fast 800 until then but after that my thoughts are turning towards 5:2. Think I may just need a change but still time to think about that.

Anyway, I hope this is/has been a successful challenge for you, not been great for me, and we can carry on supporting each other whatever our choices are over the coming weeks.

    Have a good day!

  • Hi Frog – I am so pleased that you are continuing to post as I really enjoy reading your posts and recipes. How is Froglet today?

Got on scales and was really surprised that I am down 1/4lb from yesterday to 9stone 12 3/4lbs. I am really in unknown territory now. At least the plateau is well and truly over and must have been caused by my inactivity due to the virus.

Blood sugars are still really good and I am now well into my 6th week with no insulin.

I managed to add 2 squares of 85% chocolate yesterday which I really enjoyed. I ate them really slowly – they were lovely. Carbs 24.47 calories 811.

  • Welcome back Randam, sounds like that house will get you fitter quite quickly, it sounds lovely. I am far too far from the sea here, my mum is from Cornwall so it is in my blood, and would love to be able to see it, maybe you can post a link to photo bucket or something? I am sure someone more knowledgeable can help.

  • Well, I’m back from 2 nights in a hotel for the conference. Early starts and late finishes meant I ate breakfast earlier than usual and ate later than usual in the evening. And breakfast at the hotel was continental rather than my usual cooked breakfast. But it did offer sliced meats and cheeses, boiled eggs, tomatoes and cucumber as well as the usual breads and pastries (I’d checked before I booked).

As the days were longer and meals further apart, I packed some nuts, and I’m glad I did.

Thursday night I bought a salad from Pret A Manger – I seem to do that a lot when I travel – then Friday night I ate out! Unusual for me. I’d checked the local eating places and narrowed it down to two – Carluccios (Italian) that did a nice salad, or a burger place where you could have the burger without the bun, but with a side salad instead. I decided on the burger – it was time to eat and I was both tired and hungry.

I had a burger, with blue cheese. It came with tomato and onion, but I asked for avocado as an extra. The side salad was basically a bowl of leaves! Not worth eating. It was ok. But I’d not go there again. Service not good. They seemed to find it strange I was eating alone😱

So, how did the weight go? On Thursday, the day I travelled, I was 9.1. Today I’m back down to 9 stone 😃So I’m happy.

Now I need to catch up on sleep before I go back to Italy in about 10 days

Should add that my colleagues who hadn’t seen me for a few months were surprised. Lots of questions. Checking I’ve been seeing medical professionals. Asking about the BSD then saying why they can’t do it! One goes to SW.

Official weigh in day, weight down 4lb from last Sunday, so a total of 9lb so far. Most of the week feels like it has been pretty static as 2lb of the drop was actually Sunday to Monday. Body fat percentage now 38.3, and waist only 0.5cm down so still above the ‘unhealthy weight’ recommendation of 88cm but now by only 0.5cm. I don’t think it will ever be totally flat again, so happy with that. Most of the belly has now definitely gone. I never thought I’d be saying that. Found a designer dress in size 12 in yesterday’s charity shop raid, black with assymmetrical styled sleeves with a cowl neck and very fitted below the cowl, quite short too, and treated myself, and tried it on last night. Just a tad tight, so in a few weeks when party season kicks in I just need to pluck up the courage to wear something so different from my usual tents.

  • Hi Verano, I am listening and still trying. You have done very well. I am drifting downwards very very slowly, but still sticking to the bsd principles most of the time. Hi Lynne, to answer your question to Verano, I cannot seem to want other foods, except maybe a little wine…. Hope all goes well with you. Do you ever retire?

Yes – I would like to join you on making this last week of the 2nd 8 weeks count – Last Week Last Push!!!

Very well done on your super weight loss and very healthy diet. Thank you also for the threads that you have started because they have really motivated me.

I do believe though that I have beaten you to the slow losers award as it took me 4 months to lose my first 14lbs. That probably gets the record for slow losers!

    Hi eVERYONE

Just aware that our last week of the second 8 starts on Tuesday …. week 16!! Not sure if its been a long hard slog but it certainly does seem like a life time ago that I stated to eat low carb healthy fat. I have been enjoying the plan although I did go AWOL when I was away in September

Anyway for me, a slow loser, I’ve lost 26lbs which is a lot less than some people but nonetheless it’s a LOSS of nearly 2 stone so no shame in that!!!!!

So last push in the last week anyone? For me 2lbs would make me a happy bunny.

Don’t know if there’s still anyone out there but if anyone ‘hears’ me lets make the last week count … Last Week Last Push!!!
( then time to think about what comes next!)

    Hi ,

I love my slow cooker and used it often even before I started this diet. I am a meat eater and some times use it just to roast a joint of beef or chicken while I am out all day. If you search the internet you will find lots of ideas on freezer slow cooker meals…meaning you do all the chopping and prep, make a sauce , bag it and freeze it. This means less food waste as you freeze most of what you buy as a recipe. I love it because I always have ready to go meals in my freezer. I defrost overnight, pop in my slow cooker in morning and when I get home my dinner is done.

    ZIggy👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻KEEP ON KEEPING ON😜

  • Moooorning everyone!

I have emerged from the house move and all the unpacking.. If I ever see another box it will be too soon.
I’ve moved from a bungalow to a three storey house.. With a tiered garden and a garage at the top of it… Soooo lots and lots of stairs and my poor legs and hips have ached for 4 days!!
Wishe we could put pics on here.. Would love to show you the sea view I have from my bedroom.

Anyways.. The results for Week 2 … 2 lbs off and another inch from my waist. 9lbs so far.. I’m really pleased.
I slipped up last night and as my friend came over and we managed to polish off 3 bottles of red between us…
    But back on it today!

( had the chicken korma last night… Oh My Flipping Goodness!. It was AWESOME!)

Hi, Carb Addict – I have a small slow cooker and I did a lentil curry in it yesterday and it was brilliant. Going to investigate doing more in it as it means I only have to do prep in the morning and the meal is ready in the evening. I would recommend one if you are working late as some recipes can be done very easily and simply in less than 15 mins and then the cooker does the rest.

I just did all my maths and I’ll need to lose 30% of my starting weight of 83.8kg to get down to the top of normal BMI! I’m only 154cm – just over 5ft. Definitely need to break this down into mini goals! I’m only at the end of week one and 2kg down so a long way to go. First goal is 5% which will get me under 80kg. Second goal is important to me and I would like to achieve it by Christmas: 10% which is 8.4kg from starting weight. I think I have time to achieve that (and if not by Christmas, I’ll still get there). The reason it’s important is that it will get me under 76kg and I remember very clearly that 76 is where I really started to hate my body. Before that I was overweight but curvy, with a waist. After that I was an apple with a big stomach instead. I hate not having a nice shape much more than I hate the actual size. I’m getting rid of this hanging “apron”! I’m not even thinking about more work needed after that, yet.

Purple that is an amazing loss for your first week! I’ve lost just under 2kg, hoping for a little more for official weigh-in tomorrow, but I’m very happy with that anyway.

I’ve had my first real deviation from the plan today. Felt very unwell all day, spent most of the day in bed, and got my husband to make me Vegemite on toast for a late lunch. Two slices, 30g carb (low GI hi fibre white bread). I just couldn’t face any BSD type food. I’m ok with this (my strict rule at the moment is no sugar, I’m ok with small amount of other starches), maybe I shouldn’t be turning to old comfort foods, but I can live with it. Feeling a bit better now, up watching TV, family are going to head off to family dinner without me while I stay home and have leftover butter chicken with cauliflower rice from yesterday, watch Australian Survivor and go to bed early. My stats for the day should still work out ok, will post after I’ve had dinner. Not very hungry.

What are other people’s comfort foods when sick? My husband loves scrambled eggs, but to me the smell of eggs when I’m sick is the worst possible! Nauseating! Maybe it’s just whatever your mum fed you when you were a kid so you associate it with feeling looked after.

Good afternoon (here in sunny Queensland) to all. I am coming up 16 weeks tomorrow and have been fiddling around for the past 8 only losing 2 kgs (up and down…..) so still only 8.5 all together. But then I realised I have lost all my post menopausal weight as I had lost 2kg before, and now only have the rest to go. Yowser, Frog and Numi all high fives. Krysia also because you have inspired me to stop fluffing around and start being strict, however I still don’t want bread or cakes, but I would like some pasta and potatoes.

Daily weight-in: 100g down overnight. Small but a loss is loss. What’s amazing to me is the difference around my middle – I have substantially deflated. Amazing how you can be medically obese on paper and yet feel ‘skinny’. (Far from rushing out to buy a crop top yet though, lol.) I recognise a need to let go of the time pressure I have put myself to get to goal: feeling more calm/accepting about this today.

Thinking about buying a slow cooker. Any thoughts? I don’t eat meat but there seems to be a few low-carb vegan options you can whizz up in one.

Angiebabe: you are right. Everything you said I resonate with. It IS an addiction issue: at least mentally if not physically.

Well its Day 7 for me and I’ve lost 3.8kg so far. Pretty happy with that! What a week it has been – enjoying the cauliflower rice & zucchini spaghetti in recipes, and Saturday night without a wine!! Actually I’ll have had 6 alcohol free days in the week…… most unusual!!! It really is all about changing old habits isn’t it……
Just made a yummy carrot and butter bean soup for a few work lunches this week.
Yesterday I bought the new 8 Week BSD Recipe book (Australia/NZ version) and look forward to trying out some of them over the coming weeks.
I enjoy trying new recipes but I’m trying not to overdo it. About 3 years ago I did my first round of Michelle Bridges 12 WBT.
Loved the menus & cooked a different 12WBT recipe every night for the first 8 weeks before deciding I could just remake my favourites rather than trying new ones EVERY day!!! LOL!!!!! However, I am adapting many of those recipes to further reduce the carbs.
Too many favourite recipes could be my problem!
Hope everyone has a great week ahead. I look forward to seeing my final loss tomorrow morning for week 1 but know that I won’t have a chance to jump online to post anything.

Weighed yesterday and delighted at 6lbs off on day six – good motivation to continue!
Have noticed I’m using tiredness as an excuse not to exercise every day so I need to cut that out.
Isn’t exercise a weird thing. You know you’ll feel better if you do it, but you still resist…
I AM tired though … More so than usual, so next week am going to try:

Getting a multivit and B vit supplement
Going to bed an hour earlier, even if it’s just to rest and read

Working today, so taking packed lunch and not trusting to a buffet!

    Breakfast.
    Yoghurt and seeds
    Lunch
    feta salad
    Dinner
More cabbage leaf lasagne with broccoli

That one thing alone, repeated when I’d fallen off the wagon occasionally, kept the weight off for almost 6 years! I could hardly lift the rucksack, so why the heck would I want to tire myself out carting all that useless fat around?
