Thank you mixnmatch, nice to get your comments. I think I was programmed from a very early age to be a fat baby/toddler/teenager/adult. ….enough of the excuses though. I have been dieting since my early teens, I am now almost 60 years old. I have tried every diet going, and lost and gained after each episode. After seeing my daughter and her husband’s weight loss, blood sugar levels etc. I was inspired to read the book. Now I will read it again, just to make sure I understand what I’m going to be doing in the future. I don’t know if anyone will follow this ‘thread’, but I will update it each week, and post my weight loss etc. I hope you don’t mind, but I’m off to read your profile now, I may even fill mine out a little bit more 😊

I am one of the 100 pound losers mentioned, although not within a year, and can certainly vouch for the weightloss being both faster, and once you are into the rhythm easier than any other diet I have ever tried, and although I was always deeply resistant to giving money to weight watchers and slimming world I have tried many other diets over the last few decades. If you have any questions just post them on this or any thread and someone will usually be able to help.

My OH has underactive thyroid controlled by medication and while not even following the diet strictly has lost two stone, just switching to the healthier food, and by following my example of only eating when he is hungry, not on the externally imposed habit of three square meals a day.

Thanks for the reply! Main thing 1st, we certainly do own a little fluff ball, Peanut. 2 years old and gorgeous! Lol, but very naughty, in a nice way. Restaurants, hotels, cafés – no problems at all. He’s an absolute joy. Sorry, slightly off topic there lol.
Thank you for the encouragement, as you can see, I have a long way to go 😕I entered a couple names that were suggested, but must have been doing something wrong, as I couldn’t find their stories. I’ll have another go. I will be very brave, albeit hiding behind my pseudonym, and put my 1st week’s weight loss and any other bits and bobs I have discovered in my 1st week. I have read the book, my daughter loaned me her copy, but my book and the cook book, should arrive tomorrow, courtesy of Amazon.
I will also note how my husband is doing, ie with insulin, blood sugars etc.
I think I have a lot of reading to do. 😊

I am not usually all or nothing but have had a rare carb monster attack this weekend. It began with a slice of leftover Christmas cake on top of my planned menu on Friday, I was reasonably well controlled on Saturday, with a curry out, I hit the poppadoms and pickles fairly hard, but ducked rice, naan and alcohol. Had a main course and okra side dish only, then yesterday the monster started rampaging. Slice of wholemeal toast with jam and clotted cream (at least the jam was St Dalfour so not solid sugar). Cracker with rum butter (my own, left over from Christmas again) and then dived into the Christmas chocolates. And another small slice of cake. 2500 calories in total by my guesstimate. So today I am doing a penitent liquid only fast, and will be having a grand total of 60 calories, to try to push the monster back in the cage.

Hi Caufield, sounds like a bug rather than an effect from the diet although it is possible your body doesn’t like change. What exactly have you been eating, has it been something you don’t normally have or might have an intolerance to.

  • Hello all. Tuesday morning and managed 3 weeks of the 4, losing 3.7kg. Took a bit to get back into the swing of things but on my way now. Happy to now have hit ‘normal’ with BMI so starting to transition for the last few kilos with 16:8 approach, keeping with BSD 800. Hoping that will set me up for more successful maintenance eventually – fasting and lower carbing one day. xx

Sheena, I should also have said that my daughter has to keep in regular contact with her doctor as when she loses weight her thyroxine has to be adjusted but I don’t know the routine, maybe you will already know that.

Hazelnut and Californiagirl – I am exactly the same. My carb monster has to stay securely under lock and key because it really is not a pretty sight when it starts rampaging through the carbs. I am all or nothing also.

  • I’ve been very lax in posting anything. Not very good at this! But thanks to Verano and Daisiesmum and the other regular contributors for all your posts, They have all been very inspiring and have helped me along the way. I have lost 7 lbs in 3 weeks, not half as good as others, but as I have been on a diet for years and years I guess it’s not surprising. My downfalls are the weekends. My mind is set on having a glass of wine on Fridays, and Saturdays and Sundays!! Then my husband brings me 2 chocolates left over from Christmas so it’s no wonder it’s no more than 7 lbs off. I must train my mind to forget its the weekend and carry on without the wine and chocolate- and upping the exercise should help. However I really believe in this diet and I will keep going . I love the books and recipes and take them with me wherever! Thanks to everyone.

Hi Hazelnut! Always good to hear from long-term lurkers! I know exactly what you are saying — we will never be letting that carb-monster free again — it just isn’t a polite house guest, uses the powder-room towels for wiping mud off its shoes, eats everything in the fridge, doesn’t turn off the lights when it goes to bed…well, that’s my carb-monster but I bet yours is just as boorish!
I have succeeded in maintenance since June by keeping carbs as a rare rare treat — I increased calories by adding more nuts, more fats and more misc veg and a bit of fruit (especially oranges, my all-time favorite).
I posted my terrible Saturday night last week when I made a batch of chocolate chip cookies, ate four of them (the biggest ones) then felt so sick overnight that I got up at 2 am, in the middle of the night, and drowned all the rest of them in the kitchen sink!
    Still learning six months later!!

Hi Voyager – I’d say from your results so far, you don’t need to worry about the carbs, just keep doing what you’ve been doing. If things stall somewhere down the line, then maybe look at it, but for now just keep on as you are. Your pallet will change overtime and you will lose the cravings for the sweet stuff and you’ll find things you previously adored and longed for will no longer be enjoyable to you. Just stick with it and you’ll find you’ll adjust to a new status quo.

Don’t panic about the exercise. It sounds like you are doing all you can and that is okay. You can ramp it up later, as you recover from the knee replacement. Losing the weight should help speed things up on the front hopefully.

Good luck with continued good results.

    Hi Kamru – welcome.

I have only been on BSD (and this forum) for a week and, like you, I lost weight immediately and then virtually nothing for the next couple of days (it measured ounces, not lbs 🙁 ) but, if it’s any consolation on my Week 1 weigh in this morning I had lost the grand total of 3.6kg (8lbs) 🙂 So keep going and my advice would be to only weigh weekly (says she who keeps vowing to do this, but still can’t resist the pull of the scales every morning 😉 )

Good luck and let us know how things go.

PS I have been REALLY strict with myself to lose this amount, so if you are relaxing a bit over the weekend that is fine, whatever works for you, but your loss will be just a tad slower. Good luck.

The trouble with that sunshine-girl is that I live by myself and if I had a bar of chocolate in the house I’d eat it all. I’m only succeeding so far because I have given anything I might eat that’s unsuitable to my daughter. I cleared out my freezer, fridge and cupboards – I shop every other day, only buy what I need, and there is no surplus food in the house. My “nibble” food for the days I work from home is now 100g of tomatoes, 50g of beetroot and 100g of cucumber, all chopped up in the fridge. I don’t eat anything until 12.00pm and nothing after 7.00pm.

Also, I have to say I’m a bit confused about all the comments regarding carbs. I don’t count the carbs at all – just the calories and the GI rating. I’ve compiled a list of all the foods I like that have a GI rating under 55 (which excludes bread, potatoes, pasta and rice), and plan my menus from this list. Luckily I like fish, and especially prawns!

Also, I’ve recently had my knee replaced, so I’m not able to do any strenuous exercises yet. I spend 10 minutes each day on my exercise bike, and plan to increase that as my knee becomes more mobile. I also go to the swimming baths twice a week – I’m not allowed to swim yet so I just walk up and down the pool which ensures I am exercising the correct muscles around my knee

Welcome Sheena, and congratulations on taking control. Sorry, I have no experience of thyroid issues, so no help on that front. 🙁

I only started BSD and joined this forum last Monday, but already I have been overwhelmed by how welcoming and supportive everyone is, so I am sure you will find the same. Really pleased to have you aboard.

I am amazed and very happy that I have managed to lose 8lbs in 7 days – but I have been REALLY (probably over) strict with myself as I know from experience that if the scales don’t drop quite quickly at the beginning, I will give up! I do know however that I cannot possibly continue losing at this rate, but now I am determined to lose the 28lbs goal I set myself (and hopefully more) and am prepared for a much slower rate of loss.

Be prepared for a bout of carb flu – not everyone gets it, but I did, and not very pleasant. Just fight your way through if it happens to you, it generally only lasts a few days and it is a sign that your body is learning to switch from burning carbs to burning fat, so if it hits you, look upon it as a GOOD thing, and stick with it.

Tell everyone what you are doing so they can support you and be kind to yourself. Good luck and looking forward to hearing your first week’s results.

Hi Sheena – welcome to the BSD train! Well done on taking the decision to take control and make a difference.

Although I have no experience of thyroid issues, I have been on the BSD for almost a year, with two fairly lengthy ‘maintenance’ breaks along the way. I start with two stone to lose, which doesn’t sound a lot but as it turns out that even on the BSD, I am a slow loser I am still working towards the ultimate goal.

I expect you have had a good look around the forum and read lots of the inspirational stories on here, so you can see that this way of eating really does work, even for those of us who aren’t diabetic or pre-diabetic. There are lots of lovely folks who will off advise, encouragement and support, so shout if you need to and be sure to post your results, ‘cos we love to hear how things are going with everyone.

Good luck and hope to see some good results posted by you soon.

Welcome shyshihtzu – as an owner of two of the little fluff balls myself I’m hoping your name means you own them too!

I am positive that this will work for you and am sending positive vibes now – there are people on here that have dropped upwards of 100lbs, some in less than a year and as sunshine girl says, look up a couple and see their journey – it’s inspiring stuff.

There will be lots of people happy to share experiences with you so don’t hesitate to ask – there’s no such thing as a stupid question. If you haven’t got the book already I would recommend you read that first and then go for it!! Good Luck – I will keep this page bookmarked so that I can follow your progress 🙂

    Hi all,

I’ve plucked up the courage and have started the bsd today. I had my thyroid removed after years of it being overactive and not stabilising about 4 years ago. Since then I’ve been on loads of diets but never had the willpower to stick to them. Today is the day that I stop using my lack of thyroid as an excuse!! I’m going to post my measurements and weight each week in the hope that it will motivate me to keep going. Anyone that can support me / has experience of success with thyroid issues would be great fully appreciated.

    I’m 44, 5ft4 and weigh 14.5 stones.

Some good news. Many people’s experience, including mine, is that you lose the interest in carbs/sweet things long before the end of eight weeks. My taste changed so much that a lot of old favourites, especially Caramac, just now tastes unpleasantly sweet.

HI Kam – a real plateau is no weight loss for 4 weeks so be kind to yourself and let your body adjust – it will. Drink plenty of water. Good luck and Sheena – first few days can be tough – no denying – be strong, come on here alot and read about other experiences if you find it difficult and many congratulations on your new starts!

Welcome aboard Kamru – well done on making a good start. Plateauing is very common, so don’t panic,. It’s frustrating and deflating to get on the scales and not see positive results I know – most of us go through this at some point on the BSD and some of us more than once.

My advise: might be worth checking that you are drinking enough; are including fat in your meals as this helps to kick start the fat burning process; also take a look at your carb intake and try to keep that to around the 50g a day mark. I found lowering my carb intake got me off my first plateau.

Exercise is a bit iffy with me too and although I have been doing the BSD for ages now, I’m only recently trying to get to grips with that myself. You will find the pounds still drop with or without the exercise, but probably more quickly with and it helps to tone as well.

So, try not to be disheartened, stick with it and you will find things will start to move again. Keep us posted and good luck!

You’re right about weekends..they certainly fly by! Well, yours seems like it was fun and well done for avoiding all the carby food…I love Caesar salad..yummy!

Good luck with the blood test. Since starting the BSD my results have been withinthe normal range apart from the good cholestrol which was a bit higher. I haven’t been back to the doctor’s yet but it’s on my to do list.

I’m an all-or-nothing girl too so I sympathise with you. I feel glad to be (almost) rid of the compunction to eat..though it surfaces from time to time. We are really helping ourselves with this WOE, I think.

Peak partly yesterday and today…treated myself to a tiny slice of galette des rois, epipthany cake. Then had the strength to put the last slice in the bin..so proud of myself!

Plenty of pits..no walk today, really busy, didn’t feel like going to work and backache…feeling grumpy! It will pass..

Hope you have a pleasant Monday, blood test notwithstanding. Angela

  • I’m feeling the cold more than usual this winter, which I’m putting down to having less insulation. My choice is always Merino as it’s soft, breathable and light but very warm. Prices can be extortionate but if you go to outlet shops for Outdoor activities you can get some real bargains. I think I paid about £10 for a long sleeved top.

Sorry to read of slight increases, but sadly this is all normal – frustrating but normal! During the week, I weighed with a loss of 2.2lb, but this morning when it was my weekly weigh-in, there was only 1.5lb showing as a loss for the last week. That said, I’m seeing this as a positive, as hopefully it bodes well for another loss this week – providing I can keep things under control that is!

Try to stay strong cmawp & RozyDozy, we all know it will come right if you stick with it. Good luck for showing great results next time.

I too have been feeling the cold this last week and not sure what has changed. Have acquired some chunkier slippers and plan to step up the exercise in the hope of getting the blood zipping round a bit better.

Have just got a Nutri Ninja, so am going to start putting together some largely veggie based juices for breakfast and poss lunch this week. Haven’t tried it yet, but hoping it will be a good way to include extra veg in my diet. Will keep you posted and if anyone else is doing anything similar, I’d be interested in hearing.

Keep going everyone …. we’re so close and I know we can get there!

Just finished week three and have lost a total of 16lbs – so I’m delighted. Haven’t felt hungry at all, and no headaches – but really, really missing chocolate and anything sweet. I find having 100g of full-fat Greek yogurt with 100g of mixed frozen berries at 7.00pm each evening helps, as there’s a slight sweetness in the fruit.

I’m hoping that after eight weeks my craving for sweet things will have disappeared……..

Here goes! I am trying to lose weight, and become healthier along the way. I am following the programme with my husband who is T2D. He is already on a host of Meds, as well as insulin. This has been recommended by my daughter, who is pre diabetic, and my son in law who is T2D. As I have such a lot of weight to lose, I would be really interested to read success stories of other people on here. I am female, 4′ 10″ tall, wear a size 35 shoe and currently weigh 17st. Since starting this new way of eating on 1 Oct 2016, I have not bought any bread but have been baking my own from the BSD Recipe Book. The soda bread is wonderful with soup and the wholemeal/spelt bread perfect for a sandwich for my husband, who has hardly noticed the difference.
I have been adding a seed mix the basic bread mix, but wonder if anyone has tried any other inspirational additions?

    Thanks Sunshine Girl
I have washed my hands thoroughly, and have fasted for readings where required. I’ve taken 3 readings a day. I read a lot about it and have watched tons of videos. I hear you about hte hbA1c test and thank you and have planned an appointment for this in 4 weeks time. i also want to get my triglyceride reading along with other readings. I’m keeping a record of everything on a spreadsheet so will show this to doc.

I would suggest to your doctor that a HbA1c test might be required. If you are diabetic it is great that you are getting your numbers down but you must also be very careful about going too low. There is a lot more to controlling diabetes than just getting the numbers down. There are many reasons why your test could have been wrong, time of day, not fasted first, not washed hands thoroughly and so on. What are your readings now, do a test first thing tomorrow morning having fasted from around 10 pm and lets see where you are on the scale.

  • Morning all, great progress everyone. Beginning of Week 3 for me, and no different to Friday for me, so 11 lb’s or 5kg loss in the first 2 weeks with no shifting over the weekend, but I have started to add into MFP what I actually ate and can see I probably did about 1500 cals each day, so not surprising. Back to strict 800 each weekday for me.

halloumi is great if you need to add salt, but be warned, don’t cook the whole packet like I did yesterday …Doh!!

also can’t seem to get through a weekend without wine and a couple of mini bars of green and blacks, but a lot less than normal, a bottle on Friday night and just one glass yesterday.

hoping for another 3lb loss minimum this week, that brings me up to a stone. it’s got to be good to set goals hey?
