Well Eps (and anyone else interested in chocolate cake…) the cupcakes are made from the link you shared the other day! They’re a standard fairy cake size, so we’re not talking supermarket muffin size. I got 17 decent sized ones out of one mix, and they worked out 146 calories each. Obviously there has to be a taste test so I’ve just quartered one and youngest and I had a quarter each to try and they are really nice! Probably nicer with a bit of a topping on and maybe the choc chunks in but hey – it’s a chocolate cake that tastes like chocolate cake and passed the nearly 10 year old’s taste test. Not too sweet either but sweet enough. Sometimes chocolate cake can be a bit too rich and sickly. Yes it can! Don’t argue with me Tokyo (second guessing you answering me in your head as you read this lol).

    Kitchen win!

Food today is minted lamb, mashed cauliflower, peas and steamed veg. And a chocolate cake πŸ™‚

I just go the book, read it all .. love it. Started to work on calculating all the macronutrient info for the recipes, because it wasn’t in the book. I track everything I eat with my phone: MyNetDiary.

I punched in the data for the first 3 recipes and all of them seemed off in calories. The numbers in the book seem a bit low. Is the 800 calorie per day diet more like 1000? It’s seeming so. I only punched in the first three recipes though, before stopping.

Example, the first recipe: Yogurt with Rhubarb Compote (page 171) , serves 1
1 pound rhubarb, trimmed and cut into small chunks. So I figured 14 oz for the rhubarb, figured 2oz of trimmings: 83 calories
Zest and juice of one orange. MyNetDiary tells me this 39 calories
Zest and juice of one lemon. I just left this at zero calories
1 inch piece fresh ginger.. left at zero calories
5 ounces plain yogurt 84 calories (5g carbs)

    So total calories is 83 + 39 + 84 = 206

    But book says it’s 160.

Anyways, again the two recipes that followed also were much higher in calories than the book suggests.

Are calories different in the UK than the US? I’m in the states.

    Jennifer

  • Walking every 30 mins is brilliant for people carrying too much weight. They are literally moving their total weight which will involve expending quite a bit of energy and thus burning a lot of calories into the bargain. So it helps to move it to lose it

Sounds like you’ve got it sorted ziggyzombie, hope it goes well for you. Let us know how you progress. Leisurely day today, as we were busy yesterday, so having a brunch a bit later this morning and then roast chicken this evening.

  • Digressing a second: I want to say how much I love the advice he gives to just get up every 30 minutes and walk. No other diabetes/LCHF book I’ve read recently even suggested this. I have been doing that now since he suggested it. And I believe it’s already helping. I feel much better when I get up and walk every 30 mins. If it can improve my blood sugars as much as the study reports, that’d be so wonderful. This advice alone, made the book worth it. I’m sedentary, physically disabled, suffered neuropathic complications and often need bed rest in the middle of the day, so this was particularly use info. I find myself lying in bed reading a good diet/diabetes book and now think.. hey I should get up and walk for a couple minutes.. so I take the book with me walking around the house while reading it. My dog probably looks at me funny now.

But that combined with all the success stories, the Mediterranean diet and the HIT exercise advice. Along with the Mindfulness. I’m getting a lot out of the book.

And I might follow it exactly as he suggests, taking into consideration, his suggestion that we could skip breakfast and that a longer fast duration is beneficial, and doing it something like a 18:6 schedule. Or I might just do it in 23:1 schedule. But overall I got boatloads out of this wonderful book. Read it all in entire day.. was really engrossed in it. Really look forward of the next several months cooking these recipes, learning them one by one. Anyone know of a good low carb Meditteranean cookbook with many more recipes? And perhaps macronutrient info as well? Btw, if anyone wants me to, or if it hasn’t been done already,, I’ll calculate all the macronutrient info for the recipes in the book and share in a PDF file for anyone to freely download.

Great post Middleage1, great results too.

My toilet habits have returned to normal – e.g. daily!

Funny you mention the burning/tingling sensation around the belly area – as I had the same feeling and thought the same as you did – that I was feeling the visceral fat burning off (oh I wish one could feel it burning off).

My stomach has gotten a voice of its own, and can be very loud at times.

My hunger pangs are OK, yet I find if I go shopping that I do get hungry whilst walking up and down the food filled aisles and looking at ‘old friends of the foodstuff kind’.

Have tried to up my exercise, I was exercising moderately beforehand anyway – have just increased it a bit.

I thought we had started at the same time, but you say that week two is just over for you, whilst for me week three ends today

Weigh to go for me tomorrow (hopefully)

Keep on losing in the free world

    Welcome HappyLif.

    Great results πŸ˜ƒ

My mini scale targets are in 7 pounds increments, then into the next stone down. Non-scale it’s going down a dress size. And keeping my blood sugars in the normal range.

As target gets ever closer, I know I’ll always have to be careful what I eat. As ay caramba says “so called ‘slim’ people monitor their weight all the time”. After all these months on 800 calories I certainly can’t eat the amount of food I used to. And my taste buds have changed too. Even some foods that I ate in the early BSD days don’t appeal to me now. Food shopping is certainly an adventure πŸ˜ƒ

  • That’s awesome monabee! Yeah I am a big fan of the 16:8 fasting as well. I did the 18:6 for 25 days straight and didn’t get hungry. Had great weight loss with it as well.

I really look forward to buying all these Mediterranean ingredients Dr. Mosley lists in his book. It seems a bit overwhelming right now, because I don’t really have all the ingredients on hand it seems for even one of his recipes, but I can learn the diet over the next months. I’ll just learn a couple his recipes per week and wing the rest with my existing knowledge of LCHF. Perhaps after learning enough the Mediterranean diet over time, it won’t be that overwhelming and I can eat much more of it. I hear it’s really healthy. Dr. Mosley’s Mediterranean diet is something I have plenty of time to learn as I am 378 pounds (27 stone).

One tip I can suggest to you, that I’m sure you’ve read in Dr. Fungs book, that helped with any hunger when you are fasting is to have plenty of homemade bone broth on hand. It’s a freebee and really satiates. I drink a couple cups of it a day. Each week, I take a 12 quart pot and throw one whole chicken in it along with an onion , black pepper, salt, & celery trimmings (which I store in the freezer in a bag). It takes about 3 to 4 hours to simmer the broth and not to much time to strain it , cool it, skim the fat and then store in individual 1 quart freezer bags. The broth is really healthy for you because minerals & gelatin come out of the chicken bones. Store bought broth is useless in comparison.. I never buy it.

I pull all the chicken meat off the bones and refrigerate and use in salads, feed to the dog, and in chicken soup I make with the broth. Also use the chicken in other recipes, e.g. for a mexican dish or whatever. ( like microwaving a bit of the chicken, and throwing on hot sauce, paprika, cumin, and a dollup of sour cream.. mm)

So my target weight is 369 πŸ™‚ I’ll let you guys know when I get there πŸ™‚ Getting close! At 378 now! πŸ™‚

I’ve just made the other chocolate cake that Eps put up, the My heart beets one… well, I’ve made the mix anyway… going to do cupcakes with it. Last longer that way and better portion control. Haven’t put choc chips in it and I’m going to work out now if I can ‘afford’ to make a ganache to put on top. Probably not…! Mixture tasted lovely up to putting the eggs in, so fingers crossed!

  • Hi,

I am addicted to carbohydrates. I have known I was addicted to lollies and sugar for years but I only recently figured out that I was staying in the addiction loop because when I stopped sugar I would pick up my chip/crisp consumption. When I cut down my chips and crisps I would eat more bread. So I stumbled upon the are you addicted to carbohydrates quiz last night and since I have read the blood sugar diet book.

I am going to do a combined fasting and blood sugar diet. I have got my husband to agree to fasting and if I make low carbohydrate meals on the feeding days then he will be on it with me. πŸ™‚ On fasting days we have only one meal which is set. I am going to have two shakes (for 200 cal each) and vegetables during the feeding days and then I will make a meal for dinner which we will eat as a family.

Is anyone else doing the shakes rather than real food?

    Thanks,
    Emily

welcome to BSD, well done on your good start and your husbands!

The first days on the diet are hardest and you’ve past that now so you should find it will become easier. I’ve been following this for 3 months and I find it pretty easy most of the time – just the occasional craving.

Most of us have weeks where little or no change is seen on the scale so don’t be discouraged if you have this soon it is very common and doesn’t last forever. It is helpful to take body measurements as well if you haven’t already done so πŸ™‚

I’m a pretty slow loser by averages here (26lb’s) but it is regular and stable and easy so I am perfectly happy to continue. I hope this works well for you both.

Thanks I will try some ginger πŸ™‚ I already use turmeric and pepper in cooking too.

It is true without our technology only a few would survive – I met a really interesting man at work the other day who would – he had a few interesting stories he was ex special forces, but I only have limited time to chat at work.

Today is a monumental day… today I stepped on the scales and it started with a 10!!! only just but still I was very surprised and pleased and now I am no longer obese I am merely overweight and soon I won’t even be that. Thank you BSD, thank you forum supporters! Another target past so my next target is 10 st 7. 10 st 7!!! I haven’t been that light in years, mind you I haven’t been *this* light in years. I think possibly about 9 years ago.

Of course official weigh in isn’t until Tuesday which is when I will log my weight BUT – today happened. Even if it changes – I saw it.

It has renewed my resolve for being careful today when I visit my parents, we will have an early lunch before we go, and I WILL NOT EAT THE BISCUITS!! I didn’t bake yesterday as I felt iffy all day. Although I could maybe do something now… it’s still early…hmmm

In the evening yesterday I got up into my loft and made keyrings. I made one each for my parents and one for my mother in law, each features a piece of fabric from a shirt of my sons, and a piece of fabric from the dress my daughter wore when we married, so a meaningful little scrap. I also made one for my daughter featuring blue and white ribbon and sewed on 2 mermaid charms as she loves those. They were fun to make and my daughter loved hers, hopefully the other recipients will also like theirs.

Well I best get a move on and have my breakfast, and make biscuits (I’ve decided to do that)

My weight started with a 10!!!!!!!!!!!!! can’t believe it!

Morning Eps and Tokyo, how are we both today?

Eps, hope you’ve got your walking head on, I’ve already done 3899 steps today πŸ™‚ I have the world’s most inconsiderate neighbours, I haven’t slept a wink all night, because she came in drunk 40 minutes after I went to bed, and she was still at it with her gob and slamming doors until 4.20 am this morning. That’s when I gave up and came downstairs. So I am trying to pound out some of this frustration this morning. And then, when my children are up, we’ll see how she likes SpongeBob Squarepants through a sound bar at full pelt, as her bed is moreorless over my telly πŸ˜€ More than one way to skin a cat! Don’t get mad, get even. You’d be surprised how many mornings I’ve had to hoover my bathroom wall (her bedroom is on the other side of… πŸ˜‰ ) at 7 am on a Sunday morning… those things get so many bits on them…

Apart from that, a 0.1 kg weight gain. And as Peter Kay says… altogether now… πŸ˜‰

Week 2 is now over. I have lost 5 pounds this week and 1 stone 1 pound in total. The weight loss has slowed this week but is expected after the initial loss of fluids.

My trips to the toilet to pee have returned to normal but it took from Monday to Friday for the other to appear this week. I was getting very concerned and was about to buy a bulk supply of fybrogel when relief was granted!. There was no problems when I went though and hopefully in week 3 the pattern of bowel movements should have returned to normal. Sorry if this is too graphic but from reading other posts this seems to be pact and parcel of the diet at the start.

I have not felt hunger pangs on the diet. I have felt a slight burning/tingling sensation around my belly area where I suspect the body has started utilising fat to create energy. I think of this as my friend as it verifies the weight loss. Has anybody else noticed this sensation?.

I have not been too adventurous on the food front and have stuck to the same as last week. The only bit of inspiration has been mixing sugar free strawberry crusha (plus a little sweetener) and a couple of finely chopped strawberries to my natural yogurt. This comes in at around 60 calories per 100 grams and is delicious. Without the strawberries it is 50 calories and 3.6 grams of sugar per 100 grams.

I would like to hit the 16 stone range after week 3 but if it goes into week 4 for this I will not be disappointed.

Best wishes and good luck to everybody on these forums.

I thought I’d post just a quick update. I went ahead and upped my carb intake slightly, like Orchid suggested, and I immediately felt a HUGE difference. I feel almost normal, and my mood feels much more positive. I’ll keep this up til the end of this week, and then I’ll slowly start cutting down on my carbs each week. I’ve also taken Yowzer49’s suggestion, and incorporated a short nap 😴. Maybe it was just too much all at once? I realized that I was really eating a ton of calories a day before I started the BSD, and in these last two weeks I’ve cut them by as much as 300-400%! I’ve lost over 8lbs, and almost 3 inches off my waist, so I’m SUPER EXCITED and happy to have found a way to keep it going. Thanks everyone for all your support and suggestions πŸ˜ŠπŸ‘

Hi all – this is my introduction and accountability post. I feel as though I probably should have done it a week ago when I first started but was a bit hesitant about joining in and not sure how I’d go with the BSD 800.
I’m not going to pretend the first week wasn’t hard but interestingly the things that I found hard were generally the emotional and psychological rather than the physical. Yes I struggled with a headache for most of the first 6 days, which was a little longer than I had anticipated, but I think with hindsight the withdrawal may have triggered a low-grade migraine which I should have cottoned-on to earlier.
My OH is also taking this journey with me as he was diagnosed with Type II a year ago. After he was diagnosed, and knowing I was overweight, I checked my BSL with my GP and was told I was ‘pre-diabetic’. I had never even heard the expression until then. I thought it was black and white. You were diabetic or you weren’t. I also didn’t realise that diabetes was something you could reverse once you had it. So now I’m here. We’re here.
I bought the book a few months ago and have been referring to it religiously this week. I would thoroughly recommend any new starters doing the two week plan exactly as per the book because it teaches you so much about judging portion sizes and what a nutritious meal looks like on the plate. For my OH and I it has also been handy to work out what we did and didn’t like and how to make it work with the stupid hours we both work running our business. Meal prep in advance is key here and planning definitely helps. Even planning to fail. Making sure there was stuff in the fridge at the office and home in case we really couldn’t hold out any longer. And not kicking ourselves. Persevere rather than bail completely.
Drinking water. This was a huge one. Reminding myself constantly to have another glass of water even if I knew I was going to be peeing every 10 minutes …
And the upshot is that I’ve gone from 96.5kg to 92.9 at my Day 7 weigh-in. That’s roughly 8lb, I think? I’m pretty happy with that. πŸ™‚ OH’s weight is also going the right direction and his fasting BSL in the morning has also come down below 7 for the last few days which has been BRILLIANT. Now if I can just get him to stop asking for chocolate and pizza all the time, THEN we might make some real progress … !!
My goal is to be under 80kg at my mother’s 70th on Sept 30. (I did the goal list too – another thing I’d recommend to anyone starting this. Make it about more than the weight. I want to be healthy again!)
So this ended up being a ramble. Thank you and sorry to anyone who has made it reading so far and I wish you all the best on your own journey to health!
    Annais

Day 5 – I went for supper with my cousin and DH last night and I will admit that I caved to having a baked potato. But since the others had biscuits, fruity drinks and battered food, I thought I had done pretty good. Potatoes are my downfall for low carb eating. I can live without bread, rice and other starches, but I LOVE potatoes. But I did get back on track today and stayed on plan. Most times I just take the weekend off and then say I’ll start on Monday again. But I really do want to get serious and get this weight off. It’s been on for way too long already!

I took measurements today. I know it’s almost 1 week since I started, but it’s been busy and I really didn’t have much of a chance to do this until today. I weighed myself on Thurs morning and there were 3 lbs lost. I may be curious enough to check tomorrow to see what the results have been so far too.

I’m still struggling with the 800 cals. Today I went over by 100 calories. I agree with others also about lack of energy. I feel tired in the middle of the afternoon and really don’t have energy. I didn’t feel this way on low carb before so it must be my body getting used to the lower cals. Hopefully this gets better soon.

  • Hi Daniel, thanks for your words of wisdom 😊 I’m counting pounds as I find it more encouraging to watch each 1 slowly drop away and I never did grasp grams and kilos.
Unfortunately, my maths has always been hopeless too – I have actually only lost 4.6lbs, having gone from 202.8lbs to 198.2lbs DOH!
So onwards and upwards….or should that be downwards? πŸ‘†πŸ‘‡
But, as I say, more thrilled with BS control and drop in insulin πŸ™Œ
By the way – there is only English πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ 😁…….and who or what is Arsenal and Manchester United??!

Thanks for the recipe on Almond pancakes. You got me craving for pancakes and french toast now. :O Almond or coconut flour of course. Thanks for the encouragement.

    http://cbs6albany.com/news/local/saratoga-opening-day-2016-downtown-friday-night

that is a link for OPENING day at Saratoga Raceway. They say that this is an all time high attendance at 28,000+ attendees in Saratoga for the festival. Yeh, it is near the famed Lake George that Park Avenue people have lakefront mansions on……Like the movie Gone Girl.

    Breakfast: None today!

    Lunch: 11:15
    4 Egg Spanish Omlette

    Snack: 3:15
1 CUp Greek Yogurt with blueberries and flax powder (Great for digestion)
1 Cup of fresh cherries (2 servings)

    Dinner: 6:1
    Handful carrots with Hummus
1 cup Cottage Cheese (2 servings)

Try not to snack anything more this evening. Sunday is Fast of tammuz, sunrise to sunset. Hope to get by on it with the 800 calorie eating habits. Sundown, eating something light…. like cottage cheese and celery. Then off to sleep. Early bird catches the worm.

I’m currently not craving nor missing anything, which is a bit worrying, can’t help but feel it’s the calm before the storm? Even my pizza craving has vanished after my weird eggy bready pizza experiment the other day. Oh those ruddy lady pounds, last Saturday was a shocker for me. But the good thing is that they even themselves out naturally, so try not to worry. Are we pushing for another 10,000 tomorrow? I’m going to see if I can talk hubby into an amble down to Waitrose to get some of that ice cream, and then a walk around the prom, and if he does, I’ll make him a little apple crumble in a ramekin to go with it πŸ˜‰

Night night, my bed is calling! Tomorrow is another day πŸ™‚ Onwards πŸ™‚
