Lucky, I think the body is a very strange thing.

I could never understand why my weight stayed level when day by day my waist was shrinking. I always said it was the visceral fat going, rather than the subcutaneous fat, but surely visceral fat has weight too?

So taking that as an example, perhaps you have been losing visceral fat with (somehow) less weight implications, and have just switched over the last few days to more subcutaneous fat losses? I was told that the body tries to deal with the ‘worst and most dangerous’ fat (i.e. visceral fat) first, with the more visible subcutaneous fat later (and slowest of all for the belly wodge, which I have to say even at 8stone 10lbs I can still see on myself!!!)

It seems from the Jeans of the Future fit that your measurements ARE going down, even if the scales were slowing.

I don’t think there is any conclusion to draw apart from that the body is a very strange thing, that you are not only losing weight but training amazing hormonal changes – switching the body to burning fat cells for energy – and that this takes time and has implications which are too complicated for us (and perhaps even for medical researchers) to fathom.

Maybe your body with its last weight loss is saying to you – ONWARDS! – and you should respond with a fresh look at what you’re doing (I know you’re switching programmes) as the pounds or kilos fall off.

Congratulations! Well done to your hormones! Let them get on with it! 🙂

    Morning Lucia,

As Igorasusual and Ruthdownunder have said; we are here to offer support, cajoling, sympathy, advice or a ‘listening war’s, whatever you need Hon, to keep moving on.
Just read your profile… you are doing great!! … sounds as if you have a real challenge everyday if your OH not very supportive.

Avila, I love that proverb, never heard it before but looks like good advice for anyone to take!

Morning Lynne, thank you, you’re a bit of a legend around these parts 🙂 And it’s probably not anything anyone can shed light on, merely just one of those things, or maybe everyone will think ‘How the bloody hell should I know!’…

Right… the last three mornings, I’ve lost a total of 2.7kg. Which is great, I’m not complaining by a long shot. I have relaxed my counting of carbs and calories, because I’d done the 8 weeks and three extra at 800 and I was starting to flag a little. I was absolutely chuffed yesterday when the scales hit 14 stone 13 but to be honest, I was expecting fluctuation to 15 stone and back the next couple of days. So when I woke up this morning, and I was ANOTHER kilo down, I stepped off the scale. Found my weight, weighed it. Yes, scales correct. Weighed again. Kilo down.

Any other time my instinct would be to rush here and tell everyone my good news. Even posting from the bathroom on some occasions, and I thought to myself. Four mornings, 3.7 kg – which is a tad over 8 lbs – gone. I know this diet is a miracle worker, but in week 12? In half a week? Really??? I even thought to myself, will people think I’m lying? Not that I’d have anything to achieve by it but, really?

I haven’t even been walking. I’ve got a pain in my heel which has stunted my daily step count to 2 – 3000 at best. I think back to my weightlosses on the first 8 weeks, and my best was (obviously) week 1 – when I lost a stone. My next best was (if I remember rightly) week 6, when I lost 5 lbs. But even that came after a big fat zero the week before. The only thing I can think… I’ve been away twice in recent weeks. One five day camping stint, where I did have a few treats but not to excess. And a weekend away last week, where – with the exception of two bottles of wine (shamefaced) and one small half of a roll with egg mayo on – I stuck to plan. Even took hummus and veg sticks to the christening while everyone around me scoffed pastries and sarnies.

Have I essentially cocked up so much to the extent that I’m experiencing ‘Week 1’ weightlosses all over again? Because this amount of weightloss in such a short time, so far into this woe, seems bizarre. Or is it actually possible to still pull in these large weightlosses so far into it when you’re a larger person? I am still quite big after all, I’m 14 stone 11 today, so there’s still a long, long way to go for me. I know nobody can give me a definitive answer, I suppose I’m looking for someone a way in to the plan who has – maybe on holiday – not been eating strictly BSD for a week or two to tell me that yes, when they got back on it, they had a huge weight loss again. Or could it be because I’m essentially on a ‘new’ diet to my body, because I’m slightly increasing what I’m eating on some days (but not all because I just can’t now!) and so I’m getting first week weight losses? I really don’t understand how the body works, I don’t retain information well. To me it just doesn’t seem possible, and I’m not as bouncy about this weightloss as I was yesterday’s. Which is a bit sad, because for me, it’s the only reason I’m on it, there is no underlying medical problem.

I really probably haven’t explained myself as well as I wanted to, made sense in my own head anyway. Sorry for rambling.

And – the Jeans of the Future are on, zipped up. These are jeans that although state size 20S, are not a size 20 pair of jeans. Bought at the same time as another 20S, same style, same shop, same rail even, the only difference being the colour, these are dark denim, the others light. I knew they were a good fit so when my old ones gave up, I went, I bought without trying on. Light fit me (briefly!) Dark wouldn’t go over my bum. Holding the waistbands up together, it is clear that they are nowhere near the same size. They’re an 18.

I really am sorry for rambling on this post (but only this one, none of the others 😉 ), I hope what I’m saying or even some of what I’m asking makes sense to someone.

Gavin – my egg maker is here!!! 9.50 am! I love you Amazon Prime!

One thing that’s fascinated me is the individual nature of diabetes. While I know that ‘one-size’ definitely doesn’t fit all, it still surprised me how different people can tolerate different foods. My son is type 2 (diagnosed after me, with higher BG levels). He’s on Metformin plus another tablet and was threatened with insulin. He did change his eating and drinking habits slightly. But he still eats lots of carbs. He eats foods that I certainly can’t.

Thank you very much for your really comprehensive answer! Much appreciated.

Certainly food for thought. I think I will wait until after my next review with my GP and depending on the outcome will rethink the testing question. I’m not planning on going back to ‘bad’ carbs again. Although, ‘Never say never’, as they say, so we’ll see if I can add the odd slice of bread in the future but certainly not at the moment!

I think you are absolutely right about trying to combine diets … it just doesn’t work. BSD just makes so much sense to me and most people seem to feel so much better for it, apart from the weight loss part. I think any of us who have been around a while and have tried every diet under the sun have found it difficult to take the ‘full fat’ mantra on board. In fact without bread etc we probably have less fat than when eating ‘low fat’ , but at least it good fats.

Ruthdownunder- re fruit, I realise all my life I have thought that “fruit doesn’t count” and it’s ok to have apples, oranges more or less without limit.

At the end of our family walking holiday I “ate up” the rest of the apples/clementines. Then I looked at MFP – aaaaaaaargh. The sugar! The carbs! The calories!

Good for you- yes. Carb and sugar laden – yes. Calories/carbs better spent on other things – quite probably. Moderation in future and more considered eating – oh, yes. 😉

    Sorry for your frustration. 🙁

I think if you have eaten the same foods for the whole time a fresh look at possibilities might help and also refocus yourself – almost like a new start.

    So
if you’ve had lots of meat, try fish (or vice versa)
Try different vegetables – swap cauliflower for broccoli for example
Do soups if you’ve not already done them
Try spicy food – I love chilli now and it’s absolutely delicious in stir fries. Or invent your own curries if you like them.

If you make things interesting again it will take your mind off the scales.

Also I’m always going on about MEASURING. I think visceral fat does vanish and for some strange reason doesn’t show on the scales. How are your clothes doing? Looser? Does your face look thinner, is your waist smaller?

Have you tried drinking even more water?

It WILL work, just see if you can mix it I again and “relaunch”. And read all the long-term threads here !

Very best wishes to you and congratulations on your losses so far!

Haha brilliant. Hmmmm, maybe you could offer her some of your old clothes? Lead balloon dot com?

Morning Ruth (or evening, I suppose for you!). The rolls are high in carbs, no two ways about it. The second batch I made for the children, I got 12 out of the mixture, which would decrease it somewhat but still too high for anyone following this and devoutly sticking to 30 – 50 carbs a day. But for the times when ‘needs must’ – for me, such as my upcoming long car journey of about 7 – 8 hours… one of those will be better than stopping in a Motorway service station. Or eating shop bought bread. Thank you for your lovely comments about my photos. I don’t feel the same about my birthday ones. I was so determined not to be fat at 40, I wanted photos I could look back on and feel proud of. Put in an album. Maybe I can get someone to photoshop them??? Thank you for asking about my husband too, he hasn’t been too well this week, day or night time. I might try and gently prompt him to phone his consultants secretary to see when his next review is due and if it’s too far away time wise, to ask if he could be considered urgently for a last minute cancellation, as we only live about 3 miles from the hospital.

Gavin – still waiting for my egg boiler, so please, keep egg related comments to a minimum please 😉 I am craving an egg like I usually crave pizza.

Louise – good luck with your BSD start tomorrow. I’ll eat my hat if I ever find I managed to come in at 800 precisely. It’s just a ballpark figure, but try and keep it in the ballpark as much as possible.

I do have more news for you all this morning but it’s going to be a rambly, advice sought type post, possibly more so from some of you long timers who might glance but not comment. But first, the beef must go in the slow cooker.

I’ve never posted like this on forums in the past. When I first started this it was for support from others on the journey. Along the way I’ve made some friends. And realised that others, like you, find my posts helpful. Posting on here still helps me, because it keeps me accountable and, sometimes when I’m asked a question it makes me think about what and how I’m doing things. So I’ll continue to post after I reach my target weight.

    Morning Verano

I think the original (mis)diagnosis was 2006 or 2007. As I said, the nurse did the oral GTT incorrectly. A year later the GP was so surprised at my ‘control’ that he reviewed my records and found the error. As a result the records of all the diabetics at the practice were checked to see if it had happened to others. I should add that this was not the only error involving me at that practice. Eventually I got a call from the GP asking me to make a statement because the nurse in question was appearing before her professional body.

The next diagnosis was in 2009. One of the new patient blood tests needed repeating. Guess which one LOL Again, I was fortunate because the result was just over 7, so only just in the diabetic range. Even so the medics were eager to push pills at me.

I’ve worked with doctors and know my way around research papers so when a (locum) GP suggested I check some research I did. And immediately decided he had no chance of putting me on the regime ha had suggested!

At the end of the day, it is my body and I’ve had it now for 66 years so I know how it reacts in different circumstances. There are medicines I can take and some I can’t. I’ve suffered from bouts of clinical depression over the years and found a drug that helped. More recently, when I saw a GP for depression he asked what helped. When I told him, he refused to prescribe it. As did another GP in a different area some time later. The one that worked is old-fashioned. But I suffer bad side-effects from the ones they are willing to prescribe.

Self-testing – I’m all for it. When I was diagnosed in 2009 I decided that was the way forward for me. I tested every morning, first thing, then before and 2 hours after each meal, then at bedtime. I needed to know how different foods affected my blood sugar. I recorded everything in a notebook. Once I knew how a food affected me I could cut down on testing until it was morning and evening, and after new foods or if I felt ill. Fast forward to BSD – at the beginning I tested through the day as before. Then as the figures started to drop I tested morning and evening, then morning only. Now the fasting level is consistently under 4, I only do random tests. Before the BSD I really struggled with my fasting blood sugar, it rarely came under 7!

For me, testing is a useful tool. I think the meters from big companies are reasonably accurate. I’ve had no issues with them. In the UK you can normally get one free of charge from the manufacturer because they make their money on the test strips. But I thought it was a worthwhile cost because it helped me. But I understand what you mean about obsessing, because in the past I’ve found myself trying to combine two different diets! I soon learned that trying to combine the plans of either of the main slimming clubs with low carb eating just didn’t work. So when I started the BSD it was just that, but trying to forget everything the slimming clubs had taught wasn’t easy at the start, but I stuck with it 😃

Sorry for the (very) long answer. Hope it helps.

    Hi Frog

Interesting! I guess if you’d not been taking Metformin long it was relatively easy to stop taking them. I have been using the slow release version almost since I was diagnosed six years ago, and have not really had any side effects but I just hate taking ‘pills’!!

I have a diabetic review every 6 months and the next one is due in October. I’ll be interested to see if my HAB1c has come down but in any event I’m going to ask how high it would be without Metformin. When I think about it, it was only in the low 7’s before Metformin and is usually around 6.8 with it! Not much of an improvement!

I think one or both of them use https://elanaspantry.com/all-recipes/ for recipe inspiration

My cake treat cheat in the first few weeks was Graze (sold by tesco & sainsbury) do a ‘deconstructed cherry tart’ – teeny one portion box of dark chocolate buttons, raisins, sour cherries and pecans. It is 184 kcal & 23 g carbohydrate – so a treat, but doable.
Waitrose stock Kind bars – not exactly cake, but nut bars with dark chocolate that are under 200 cals and about 16g of carb

Ruthdownunder – thanks 🙂 – now keep going.

Louiselamour – in my 6 weeks of being on the BSD , I have often been slightly under or slightly over eg 780 – 825. I do try to aim at 800, but sometimes its not possible nor does it matter so long as the overall nutritional balance is correct for the day. The BSD book also makes this comment that you don’t need to be precise at 800. A few times I have been higher eg 850 or 860 because I fancied a few almonds or cashews.

Fascinating!! Over what period of time were all these ‘diagnoses’?

So every practice wanted you on Metformin but you resisted. I know several people who have a bad experience with Statins and strangely enough they are all women. Maybe our bodies process them differently.

What’s your opinion of self testing? I never have but since joining this forum it has crossed my mind on several occasions. I just don’t want to become obsessive, especially when I’ve read that some monitors are really quite inaccurate. It’s bad enough obsessing about weight jumping on the scales every morning!

Hi all, I have completed two weeks, yay! I have to say this week was tricky, I had a day where wine got the better of me and I ate a little more BUT did manage not to go crazy. I have kept to the no bad carbs but ate a little over 800 some days. I feel sick of meat and vege so need to switch things up a bit this week. Overall I have maintained the 4kg loss from my first week but I have lost 3 cm from my waist this week. Switching any alcohol consumption to vodka and soda for the days I just need a drink!
Hope everyone else is going well!

Hi all – most of you sleeping

Lucky, thanks for spelt bap links. I have decided that I have been having too many carbs, so have put them in favourites for later. I even have spelt flour in pantry because I have been buying all those funny flours for years, although coconut flour is a newbie and I like it.
Your photos are lovely, and although you obviously look much slimmer in the second I thought the birthday one was beautiful also. I do hope your OH is getting well. Mine is 83 and a ‘marvel’ for his age, or so his doctor tells him.

Gavin, high five. You are one of my new inspirations. There are so many of you now, I will have to keep going. Frog I do not have your problem, am the eldest of 4 and the only fat one. They live a long way from me so I am hoping that when I see them I will look substantially different. But I do have a friend who would really benefit from this diet, and I am gently gently making suggestions….

Throw out your big clothes. I have cupboards full of smaller ones, as I tend to be a bit of a hoarder, so won’t be shopping for ages, and as I am retired and live in a warm climate I do not need much. When my shorts get too big I will use a belt and I have dozens of smaller tops. When the shorts fall down I will go shopping…..

Greenjanet I hope you enjoying your hols. Who looks after the beautiful shop?

  • Hi LiveLonger! I’m a mom of 4 young ones as well (11,9,6,6) and twins too! I have about 20lbs (I think?) to lose. I’ve started and fallen off the diet several times, but I really have faith in it that it’s the best solution for me. After just a few days on the diet, my skin clears up, my cravings die down, and I lose weight. I struggle mostly with busyness and keeping up with the pace of life, and just getting over the initial phase of needing to say no to goodies that are around. It seems like almost every day there are sweets offered to our family or present at every social gathering. I don’t keep treats in the house as of a few weeks ago when I finally had the courage to ask everyone if they’d consider keeping sugar out for my sake and just enjoying it when they’re out (and there are lots of opportunities then!). I have a beach trip coming up in 4 weeks too!! So I think it’s helping me to be a bit more serious about saying no right now rather than waiting.
I began the 800 diet 2 days ago and have stuck to it well so far. I’m working out our family schedule this week and hoping to nail down exercise time. I love to exercise, but it is hard to defend the time to do it. I home school the kids, so we have very full days! I’ve been so encouraged by the forums lately and am glad to see so much optimism and encouragement here.
Which HIT program are you doing? I’ve been alternating between Jillian Michaels DVDs, running through the neighborhood and walking, which are all fun, but I should mix it up a bit. I’ve literally been doing the same Jillian DVD for about 4 years…you know, off and on, not solid!!

I don’t have diabetes…yet…type 2 runs in my family on both sides: both grandmothers, and my mother. And I see how it happens: the stress and demands of life and the shortcuts of easy carb-laden foods which are fast, convenient and comforting slowly add to our weight and trap us in habits of eating this way. By the time my grandparents and mother were in their 50s, their weight was really high, and their addiction to sugar was pretty deep. I’m working at killing the monster cravings I have for sweets and making new habits.

You’re off with a bang it sounds like with exercise and all! If you can’t get to a workout one day, don’t panic too much…lots of plates to keep spinning here ( : Hope you have a great day tomorrow.

Roxanna, you are having a ‘famine reaction’. 18 kg is a huge amount and your system and body are just digesting it. Do not panic, read other posts from longer termers. Some have many plateaus and then it starts again. I would say be kind and do not stress, maybe eat a few different good foods and remember how far you have come. Just be patient and kind to yourself. Look on the hello thread for some of Lucky’s posts, and others.

Vary your good foods a bit. Jog your system a bit, not in cals but in flavours and textures. And remember that is a very substantial weight loss. If you were at WW they would be cheering you.

If you google ‘famine reaction’ you will find some very interesting reading which will help explain your plateau. It is an evolutionary defence mechanism to stop you starving to death – I know you are not and it is very frustrating but if you read some of Dr Amanda’s research you will understand what to do to get over it.

Best of luck, keep us posted
    Ruth

Hi all! I am weighing in for week 2 of the BSD tomorrow (Sunday’s are my weigh in day!) over here in sunny Seattle, WA. This is the first time I have EVER stuck to a health plan or diet and am feeling so proud and inspired by the people on this site. I wanted to start a thread where newbies can share tips and tricks and to keep each other accountable! I am a busy mom of two who works full time in the city. I feel like its been a part time job, meal planing, weighing food and tracking but after my first weigh in (I lost 5.5 inches and 6.5 pounds last week!) I was driven to keep it going. This week Im planing on doing a major meal prep day tomorrow to make the week easier. DO you all have any favorite meals to share, tips for meal prep or really anything in between? Lets do this together!

  • I am heading into week 10 having found the first 8 weeks really easy and very satisfying to see the weight drop (4kg) with just 1kg to go but am finding it hard to get motivated into doing any exercise other than the usual around the house and garden type. Suppose I really should do some weights as the “nanna arms” are beginning to wave!
Off to see the GP next week (six weeks of no Metformin, no cholesterol or blood pressure med) then HbA1C in six weeks with hopefully full bloods to show reduction in triglycerides to help my poor fatty liver!
I am now 56kg which is very, very low for me (last experienced before children 38 years ago!) biggest incentive for doing this way of eating was to stop the insidious creep of Type 2 Diabetes – I was on the maximum dose of Metformin and heading for an additional medication to be added to my cocktail – that is certainly not going to happen!!!
Good luck to everyone continuing their journey

  • 54 no cake yet! Not really spelt flour as Igor says – it is an ancient grain, but still a grain.

Most of us do not do shakes. We need to practise real food and it tastes better. I still have some in pantry from an earlier attempt – long use by date)

I agree with Indy about no booze – my bounces have been due to falling off the wagon. Indy I must get off my sciatic butt and get that fitbit!

Igor’s sense and success has convinced me that I have been eating too much fruit – not other bad carbs, but still too many carbs. This 8 weeks I will be STRICT

54 if you look at those who have good success you will get a feel for what works. I am still learning

    Good luck to all

On your question I have been marking time this week ( supposedly week 9) and looking at Igorasusal’s post I realise I am eating way too much fruit. This week way too much of everything, so I think I will start again on Monday.
    Love to you

  • Hi everyone
I’m a 41yr old mother of 4 young kids (9,6,2,2) with 15 kg to lose. I work full time and struggle to fit it all in. I had gestational diabetes during my twin pregnancy. I ended up on insulin despite following all diet program I was given. I was relieved when my test results were good following the pregnancy but the whole experience scared me. Since then I was diagnosed hypothyroid and have struggled to lose weight despite going to the gym fairly regularly. My diet has been 80% great and 20% terrible as at times I’ve made poor choices as a result of being both buys and tired.
I started the BSD 3 days ago and lost 1kg so far. Thats very motivational. Ive tried a lot of crazy diets and never had that result. Im also doing a HIT program which is 20 mins per day for 5-6 days per week.
I have booked a beach holiday at the half-way mark to keep me motivated. I need to lose 8kg by then to fit in my swimsuit!
Looking forward to swapping success stories with you all.
    Cheers

that is amazing captainlynne! you’re so inspiring for me who has a similar amount to lose!
My own first week is over now, seven days down, survived 🙂 What a big change in lifestyle it has been. And pretty thrilled to have lost 5.2kg which is 11.4lb. To say I am Thrilled is understatement of the century!!!

  • Hi Karen, I’m one week ahead of you (started last Sunday 21st Aug). I’ve officially lost 5.4kg (11.4 lb) in seven days! The first week’s loss is quite incredible. Everyone says it slows after the first week but what a lovely kick off!!

Here’s my two cents for you: Two things I learned the hard way I didn’t do in Week One but if I could go back in time I would, are:

    1. Plan ahead what you will make
    2. Have some meals Already prepared so you don’t have to cook when you’re ravenously hungry! This is particularly for Day 2 and 3 when I was soooo hungry.

The hunger subsides after Day 3 – by Day 4 I was fine! But there’s nothing worse than being super ravenously hungry, wanting to eat a horse Now, but having to slowly measure out and count up calories and figure out what you can have right now 🙂 🙂

The other thing I did do which worked really well for me is keep a very very detailed food diary for each meal, including measurements an calorie count for each ingredient. MyFitnessPal website and App has a Food Search function which is invaluable for telling you how many calories in everything. I didn’t record mine in the App thought, I’ve gone for the writing-it-down option.

Good luck starting off and read this forum it is absolutley fantastic there are some inspirational people on here who’ve done so so well and offer their advice and support! 🙂

Hi there fellow dieters I have successfully lost 18 kg on the fast blood sugar diet in the first 8 weeks but since then I have lost nothing. I am really frustrated as I don’t understand how it’s possible to maintain your weight at such low calories. I keep my carbs under 50g. Most of the time I manage to keep them under 40. I have eaten the same meals every single day since I started. It just doesn’t make sense. I have started some exercise ie skipping light jogging and walks. My starting weight was 106 kg and I am 5f 4in so I was severely obese. I now weigh 88.2 kg. and I’ve been this weight for the last month. It just won’t budge. Has anybody else experienced this? Please all help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

There is nothing like wearing a white tux and doing Die Ententanz! The what????? Well, it is an Oktoberfest dance to the accordian….. but it is more Swiss then Bavarian. Translated it is the Duck Dance!

It is totally silly and funny to do. Flap your wings, quack like a duck, and bend them knees. Nothing like seeing the Lonegrin opera and afterwards making about 25 % of the people doing this silliness. Most had no clue what the hell we few were doing nor the music. I guess Germany is a foreign country for the many!

I just love causing commotions and chaos where ever I go. After 3 minutes, everyone was doing the silly Southern german dance. It definitely belongs on AMERICA”S FUNNIEST HOME VIDEOS. But, it was not at home!

Just a good way to say goodbye to the Theater in the Adirondacks! They probably going back to San Francisco Opera House and say them New Yorkers are all loonies and crazies!

We were like the old Crazy Eddie commercials:
