No movement today – in any sense of the word. Tried doing something different with my veg so on Sunday whilst cooking roast chicken I shoved in a celeriac (peeled) smothered in butter and wrapped in foil. TV chef said either 40 or 50 mins so after the latter took it out for a look and it was still rock hard. Left it in for over an hour and it came out cooked but just a ball of mush. Anyway, today I was having fried halloumi for lunch so cut a slice of celeriac and fried that too. It was quite nice but I was expecting something special given all the rave reviews. Hey ho, shopping tomorrow and I am going for sprout, flat beans and haricot.

    Hi CC,

How are you getting on? Energy levels?

Failed miserably on the exercise yesterday ☹️. However I have a Pilates class later and it is a fast class like a baby workout, wish me luck 😂😂. That was good of you to go walking. How was the yoga? I tried it for a year but much prefer Pilates, I think it is just what suits the individual.

Mince was fine, thank you, I added vegetables and some bovril, but it looked huge and I panicked slightly as I was below 800 for the day, so needed to eat it. I did manage to in the end and only a little unnder 800, a bit of lesson learnt. Your soup sounds delicious. I too think my tummy is shrinking too.
Must admit I love fried halloumi never liked it before, added Chia seeds, could not taste them, so a great form of fibre. The recipe book has arrived and I have book marked a lot so feeling positive.
    Have a great afternoon 😊

  • That’s interesting – I used to eat uncooked porridge oats (Mornflake), a very small amount, no more than 25g with cold water, and sometimes add a bit of dried or fresh fruit. Cold porridge sounds awful but with a stir it still goes creamy. I found I was fine all morning, and at this time I was slim. However, I also ate very veggie soups several days a week with 25/30g of something wholegrain added (wholegrain rice, quinoa, pot barley, etc.) and often also included some flaked salmon, and even sunflower or pumpkin seed sprinkles…

Then I went to France and discovered their amazing, gorgeous cuisine. I would like to know whether the French have a lot of overweight and diabetic people in their population? I get slimmer, and have a flatter tum after a 1 to 2 week holiday there, despite eating what I like, and get fatter when I return home despite efforts to eat French-style.

I’ve tried the 5:2 diet (previous version of 500 kcals per day) which I was able to do overnight and until the evening meal the following day, but not including it. I quickly looked much slimmer, with a less chunky middle, less chunky neck, and less flabby abdomen, but since Christmas have lost the will to resume fasting. The new 800kcals 5:2 diet sounds less onerous and I can fast on fewer calories occasionally, when I feel like it…

I am possibly a couple of pounds lighter than when I attempted the diet at first, but I quickly get very flabby around the middle if I eat the ‘wrong’ food. It is as though the fat cells are just waiting to expand and fill up a ‘spare tyre’ that’s deflated but hasn’t disappeared after dieting.

I suspect that the secret to being slim and trim in the long-term is MINDSET; by that, I don’t mean will-power. I’m thinking of self awareness, self-regard, a sense of satiety, of quality of food, of eating and dining habits, and a calming, gentle, positive approach to pleasant self nourishment.

I’m also considering the new 5:2 ‘diet’ / Mediterranean diet ~ a ‘flexitarian’ plant food oriented way of life. I won’t rule out very small amounts of home-made pastry, fresh cream, tropical fruit, or a modest glass of wine at celebrations.

Goodness, Jackie, 3 months is an awfully long time to “host” someone you don’t know, let alone a teenager! Mind you, it’s a long time for your daughter to be away from home too. Good luck to you if you decide to go for it – mind you, I wouldn’t like to be in your house if you say no! Teenage girls can be, err let’s say, a tad difficult when they choose to be!

    My positives today:-

    1) Blowing a gale and torrential rain here (our road is flooded) so I tried out my brand new walking gear – jacket and trousers, sold as 100% windproof and waterproof – while walking the dogs and I was snug as a bug in a rug, and came home bone dry! Which is more than I can say for the dogs, but I guess you can’t have everything😉

    2) Going to the cinema this evening to see The Post – really good write up and I really rate both Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep, so looking forward to it.

    3) Just got an email to say a delivery which wasn’t expected until next Monday, when I would have had to arrange for someone to take delivery as I’ll be out all day, is actually being delivered today, when I am home all day anyway. Yeah!

Hope everyone else has lots of good positives – we used to have a “Peaks and Pit” thread, where we could post both the best and the worst of our day, so it allowed us to vent too, but it’s really nice just to have lots of positives to make us appreciate life.

15 hours since last meal.. Hungry!!..
It wil have to be scrambled eggs at desk lunchtime . Another hour to go !! .. Am going out for a meal with a friend tonight.. so need to save cals and avoid carbs.. I think the pIace I am going to does a good chicken caesar salad and I can lose the croutons over to her plate ..

  • JulesP – Reading this I’m wondering if you might be better off just forgetting about the numbers for the first few days (or longer). I think sometimes the numbers can get in the way. I was hovering at around 10 stone for about 4 weeks (over the last 2 challenges) and it just became a bit of a thing. So, I’m wondering if it would be worth leaving off weighing this week, concentrate on doing the WOE, and using your body to get a sense of if you’re losing or not. Leave the weighing for later. Just a thought. x

JGwen – we’ve compared notes on another thread – yep, fat lost from random parts of the body but belly fat still very much there – me, too! A work in progress for us. But isn’t it fantastic to be getting into things 2 sizes down.

SueBlue – I’m going to knuckle down and really try during this challenge, too. I only just lost some weight in the last week of the Good Cheer challenge – bit lucky, really – but generally didn’t feel as much ‘on it’ as previously. You’ve always been one of the people whose posts I look forward to reading, so I’ll enjoy reading about your progress through this challenge.

Natalie – not a word of a lie – I went into the living room yesterday, or the day before?, and my husband was watching Sky – your Sidney Sixers playing a Melbourne cricket team (very loud scream!!!). So, that’s the last time I mention anything from on here to the OH. In future, what happens on the Forum stays on the Forum!

  • Hi SueBlue, thanks, so frustrating isn’t it, how long it takes to lose and how quickly it goes back on? I need to get my mind under control again, back in the groove, out of this insane, self destructive mode. You are so close to your lowest now, and your will power is impressive, I’m sure you’ll manage this time, good luck!

  • I would like to jump in to this challenge as well please. I have 11.2 kg to go to my initial target weight. I was very pleased with myself yesterday. I have finally reach the comfortably wearing jeans 2 dress sizes down from the size i was (from the same shop.) If I could just get the weight loss to be coming from the roll of fat around my belly rather then random other parts of my body. – maybe time to dust of the old exercise dvds.

  • I should probably just copy/paste my first post to the last challenge as it’s identical. I started last time at 10st 4 and over the 4 weeks lost then promptly regained 5lbs. Here’s hoping to repeat only the first half this time. I’ve noticed that tend to eat the same meals all the time so will try some new ideas to try to reinspire myself and pull myself out of the carb fest I seem to be stuck in. I’m also determined to keep reading/posting here especially when I’m doing badly (like now) not just when doing well. I’m subscribing to this thread too so will get lots of email reminders to stay on track. My aim, as ever, is to get back down to 9st 13. Good luck everyone, wonderful to see so many new and old faces here.

  • Signing out of this challenge after some real ups and downs. Started at 10st 4, lost 5lbs to get to longed for 9st 13, promptly put on a few pounds, lost them back down to 9st 13 again then in the last week or so have wolfed down every carb under the sun and managed to put on 5lbs so back exactly at the weight I started this challenge!!! Off to sign up for the new challenge, hoping to repeat the first half of this month, certainly not the second. See you on the next challenge. xxx

  • I have a feeling my scales are over reading much more than 4%, maybe as much as 10%. Last year when I did a boditrax scan that uses similar principles but includes hand sensors my body fat read as 22% and my old bathroom scales stubbornly reported 34% all the time. I put this down to my pear shape, the scales are measuring just my fattest bit with the legs and thighs. Even assuming a couple of percent under reading from the more accurate scan that is a 10 percent difference. This morning shows another drop in ‘muscle’ which is the glycogen I have been burning these last few days of low carbing. Weight is below 11 1/2 stone for the first time in months though so it is working.

  • Morning all,

Well, what an active thread!!! Hello everyone, very excited about the momentum we could pick up this month.

    Today +0.2lb.

Daily struggles with cravings again. Yesterday, I found a box of chocs and 2 large fistfuls went in 😩 Really don’t know how to manage fatigue/feeling ill not leading to poor food choices. Hubby has hidden everything from me.

I am going to commit to today being BSD compliant. Will report back tomorrow.

JackieM & MixnMatch – From what I understand about bf scales, their accuracy is +/- 4%. I agree that their usefulness is tracking trends. I think I need to lose another 5% body fat and when I think that I am close to this goal, I am planning to get a ultrasound scan to give me a more reliable reading and actually see how much visceral fat I am holding. My body fat has always been either borderline or high, but my weight is closer to the bottom of the healthy BMI.

I am at the stage of looking slim and getting the ‘you aren’t going to lose any more are you’ comments, to which I end up discussing the effects of visceral fat and how BMI is a blunt tool. People seem to be genuinely shocked that before this weight loss, I was within a healthy BMI but in the obese category for body fat and hip/waist ratio. Hubby hasn’t had a ‘healthy’ BMI since he was 18, (now 42) but he carries a lot of muscle. He played rugby for donkeys years and does not carry much body fat. He could just about squeak into the top end of his BMI and be healthy where as I really need to sit at the bottom end of mine.

Anyway, onwards and downwards, aiming for a better 24hours. Have a good one everyone.

    x

  • Ladies, I can’t believe I missed a whole stack of posts on this thread, but most importantly, ALLIE’S NEW CLOTHES!!

I’m so sorry Allie, you must have thought me most rude, posting my boots and not acknowledging your new clothes, not to mention Esnecca’s help in getting them up here!

Well, what can I say? Your choices are awesome and right up my street! I love the long body of tunic tops! The flats are to die for and like Theo, I hope we can get them over here! Really like the polka dot pants too! I hope everyone has soon for a second wardrobe?!

I must add a full length free standing mirror to my list of goal purchases!

Oven cooked boiled eggs are also something I will be trying out this weekend! Totally brilliant!

    See you all later! xxxx

I am starting today if anyone wants to join me. I have done the diet for 3 weeks about 18 months ago with incredible results and have just not been in the right frame of mind to restrict myself after starting new stressful job, moving house and separating with the father of my children.

I am however back on it starting today. Tomorrow is my last day of a three year course of psychotherapy and it’s a new start for me. I am determined to shed 2 stone (I am tipping very sadly at 12 stone – my heaviest.) I have a really problem with food since being a teenager. – all manner of things – eating from exhaustion from lack of sleep and verbally a cycle of depreciation, lack of planning, and he occasional binge. I want to focus on self care and self discipline and put my self first for a while.

I didn’t use the forum last time. So if anyone would like to join me.

    Starting weight:
    12 stone 01 pounds.

Today I am planning on having black coffee til lunch – then two eggs for lunch with lots of green tea then mushrooms and parsley and lots of garlic for dinner.

For me the problem is the evenings – so hopefully I will try to distract myself with calorie free drinks and other self care

    Thanks!

Thanks for the comments and support Squidge and Caronl. All going in the right direct KelsBells so good for you, 2.9kgs in a week is a good loss, mine is slowing down now, less than 2 Kgs in the last five days but I am more pleased with my blood sugar, my average reading for the last week is 5.8 (104). I know what you mean about of bread but definitely not bothered about vegemite, tried when we were Australia and I’m definitely a ‘hater’, its worse than marmite, a similar concoction that some like in the UK, again I am a ‘hater’. We are going some consideration to getting a bread maker so we can have an occasional treat of homemade wholegrain bread once we have done our 8 weeks. Thanks for the tip on the app , I’ll try that.

  • It’s just occurred to me that this challenge finishes up on my BSD birthday 🙂

It would be so good to be able to celebrate that milestone at my goal weight! That thought is going to stiffen my resolve over the Australia Day long weekend- two BBQs and my BIL’s 60th birthday party. Must remember that nothing tastes as good as thin feels, and no one except me is responsible for what I put in my mouth. The food’s no problem, the sparkling wine is a bigger challenge.

  • Oh, Busybee, I feel for you. One bereavement is hard enough but when it becomes multiple losses within a short period it just seems too much. How highly you must value your friend, and be valued in return, for taking your special time and giving it to her. I’m sure it will be bitter/sweet for.your OH and yourself when you do go away to acknowledge your special anniversary.

Look after yourself, dear lady. Do only what you can to nurture yourself as you nurture others. Many hugs coming your way. Stay with us. 🙅💜🙅💜

I haven’t tried them yet, Essie. They were chucked in the freezer
on arrival with multiple bags of other raw nuts, so we could
use up the french clamp lid mason jar of mixed walnuts, almonds
and a lesser quantity of brazil nuts first. This is as good a time
as any to tell you that we’ve flipped out over Eden black soy
beans. The batch of chili consumed tonight may be my best
effort EVER, and when I compare the net carbs from a 1/2 c
of black turtle beans to Eden black soybeans, the difference
is enough to make me faint: 1 vs 12! J needs to have extra
potassium every day, and this baby provides 350mg, far in
excess of a banana, and that’s before you even consider the
    fiber…
It’s past time for me to acquire ghost pepper as well as smoked
maldon salt, also. Short of a recommendation from you,
I’ll try Whole Foods, and expand my search from there. You
are the pied piper for American sourcing, and I will follow
you anywhere. Are you trying to turn me into an excellent
cook once again? Definitely feel that I’m on the road back,
and I haven’t felt this way in 1/2 a decade. It feels familiar
    and great!!!

  • Hi Caz,
There’s a great recipe website the link of which I think is on the good eats thread but it’s basically 150 of the best keto side dishes, mostly vegetarian so a great resource although I know you are also looking for protein ideas but this has many, many delicious things to try!
    Good luck!

  • Hi everyone, I’ve really struggled this week. I’ve had a few bits of white carb rubbish and my body has each time responded to it negatively leaving me filling sick and head achey , yet I went back for more each time- why why why! I’m weighing in at 145 lbs still which is actually miraculous so i’ll take it but I know I have to knuckle down now to get back into the zone. Reading all your losses and posts should make it easier, I might try posting my daily calls and carbs. I hope no one minds, feel free to ignore them but it might help me to be more accountable. Well done everyone xx

Allie, have you tried the Sacha Inchi yet? I went to town on them today and thought they were great. I got a slightly marine feeling from them, which inspired me to turn them into a savory butter. I food processed them until smooth, then added sesame seeds, ginger powder, garlic powder, ghost pepper imbued salt, black pepper and turmeric and processed some more. The result was beyond my expectation. It’s the first time I’ve made a savory nut/seed butter and boy howdy did it pay off. Tons of flavor, no carbs. Just the way I like it. 😀

  • Essie, I’m running out of superlatives! Will be trying out this
technique first thing tomorrow….What J thinks he likes and
doesn’t like is infantile. He grew up in a cultural backwater,
so what do I expect? My one moment of silent triumph came
while he was hospitalized last Spring. He found the food
disgusting, and after spending the previous 6 months referring
to me affectionately as the “food nazi”, all he had to say was
“I just want to get home and eat your food”! Sweet 🙂

  • Quick check-in – I made it through the day at 750 calories and 21g carbs so quite pleased with myself. I also managed over 11,000 steps but was probably a bit lax on the water.

Unfortunately I was too busy tonight to prep food for tomorrow so I’ll have to buy stuff on my way in. Hoping to not get tempted when I go shopping.

It’s really great to see so many people on this thread. I am reading them all even though I’m not commenting all them all. Wishing everyone luck with their goals for the next 4 weeks.

I have had a very slow start to this reboot, only really getting my head in the game on Monday with a fast day, and now starting a slow ramp up again for the next 4 weeks with 50 calories extra each day. I was 2 pounds lighter this morning than on the 2nd January but of course there will be a water component there as I have not been avoiding the white stuff over the holidays, although I have (mostly) moderated portions. I would like to end up back at 11 stone, where I was for many months before Christmas but am not sure whether I want to take the extra push back to my wedding weight just yet. Instead I want to get fitter, and just reduce my body fat a little. I am not really worrying about weight, but some of my tighter trousers have got a little uncomfortable, so a little bit of weight off won’t do any harm.

    Fantastic results this week !

JGwen after i didn’t lose much in the first two weeks, I have have gone back to 16:8 (which is really how lost it previously ) . It really suits me as a WOE I think..
The main thing for me is that it really helps me not nibble in the evening . because i know i have to wait 16hrs after my dinner before I can eat again !..

Sometimes I have managed oonly about 14 hours , but it does seem to be working well for me .. It did last time also ..

  • Tomatoes and balsamic vinegar are both high in sugar. You can still use them, but portion control is essential. Don’t approximate or guestimate anything. Weigh, measure and calculate the cost in carbs before you eat them. Quorn can also be questionable, depending on which kind you’re eating. Check the igredients for added starches, wheat, sugar, etc. Use an app like MyFitnessPal or Fat Secret to tally all your food. You’ll be shocked, I think, at enormously high in carbs the food you think is “healthy” really is.

Beans can be problematic as well depending on how your system responds to sugar. I know veggies often feel compelled to eat them as a protein source, but there are other solutions that are close to carb-free: tofu, lupini beans, hemp products, seeds, nuts, dairy (if you eat it), sea vegetables from chlorella powder to kelp noodles.

You can tame this beast, Caz Scho, but you’re going to have to go a little further afield than you’ve been used to. Don’t be afraid. Think of it as a culinary playground and have fun finding new things. Good luck! 🙂

  • Allie, I’m not the slightest bit surprised to hear that your hirsute man is suddenly a fan of kimchi. It’s hard to resist even the most borning of deviled eggs. A bright, spicy, kicky one like the kimchi one is irresistible. You might need to employ this trick to keep up with his newly-discovered taste: https://www.familyfreshmeals.com/2012/11/how-to-make-perfect-hard-boiled-eggs-in-the-oven.html

Theo, your grandaughter is your number one fan and it’s adorable. I love that she’s so keen for your to show off your sweet gams, too. It seems to me that you’re going to have to wear one of those skirts to her concert just on general principle. Brown is a neutral and gives you plenty of options for pairing with a top that’s more to your taste. Play around a little and see what you can come up with.

  • I’m in. This is my first attempt at BSD. I am 41, 5’9 and weigh 218.6lbs. When I look in the mirror I see someone who weighs about 170 ☹️ Which is what I’m trying to get down to.

The irony is that I am very disciplined in every area of my life – except eating. I did my first triathlon last year and plan to do another two this summer. I want to do it without carrying the weight of my six-year-old around with me.

Aiming to get down to 160lbs by October. We are having a big family trip to Disney World in Florida and I’m sick of avoiding the camera because I’m so mortified by how I look.

For the challenge, I’d be thrilled to get to 200lbs. I know it’s a long shot, I’d have to lose 4.5lbs a week. But damnit, I need to do something.

  • Morning all, I’m in as well. After 10 weeks BSD I’m now just under 6kg from my goal weight. My target for this challenge is another 4kg. I figure weight loss is likely to slow down as I get closer to my target so I also want to include some metabolism protecting fasts into this challenge. So far I can’t seem to get passed 23 hours so for this challenge I will add a couple of 36 hour fasts.

    So starting weight is 65.8kg.

Hello to all the new challengers. One of the encouraging things is the variety of approaches that everyone uses, how differently our bodies react etc, but that finding what works and sticking to it brings results. I find 800/20 and 16/8 works well for me. I’m the type for whom exceptions and ‘treats’ will rapidly escalate and I don’t have the stamina or fortitude for stops and starts. Bit all or nothing.

  • I would love to join in with challenge. I want to lose 4lb. . I put 2lb on at Christmas taking me over my goal weight of 133 lb and today I am 134 lb. Although I am sticking to BSD and 16:8 I’ve found myself eating a packet of crisps here and there and I feel I need to be more accountable because I think I could easily slip into old habits! I have felt quite hungry during January which I’ve not handled well and I want to feel in control again. So, I’ve committed to four good weeks to see if I can get back on plan 100%. It took me the best part of last year to lose my weight (42lb) and I don’t want it to start creeping back on. Thank you for starting this thread- great name too!

  • Hi, I’ve just started the BSD and am also looking for ideas and recipes as a veggie.
This morning I just had 2 scrambled eggs for breakfast and for dinner I had 1/2 a tin of cannelini beans with some cherry tomatoes chopped up, 30g of feta cheese and balsamic vinegar. Delicious!
Tea was even better – cherry tomatoes, mushrooms, shallots, red onions, balsamic vinegar and olive oil, cooked down for an hour until it was soft and absolutely fantastic.

However, that’s about my repertoire without carbs! I’m planning on cauliflower and broccoli with some Quorn chicken roast fillets with gravy.tomorrow and then I’m very short of ideas.

Really hope this works for me – I’ve tried every diet under the sun. They all work, once, and then I put it all back on again.

  • Check the ingredients on the tea. If it has dried fruit pieces in it, you’re drinking sugar which is going to keep your carb cravings and hunger high. Your new best friends are fiber and fat combined. They defeat hunger like no other food can, way, way better than carbs, that’s for sure. The simplest dish I make that combines those two is 6 oz of spinach, steamed in a pan with salt and pepper. Drain out the water and toss with a teaspoon of high quality dark green extra virgin olive oil (kalamata oil is where it’s at, imo). Top with a half ounce of feta, crumbled. The end. It takes no more than 5 minutes to make and is shockingly delicious. I often have it on the side of chicken sausage or with three or four different kinds of sauerkraut.

    1) my daughter is on an all out campaign to let her apply to go on three month School exchange tonAustralia next year – I am very much enjoying her thoughtfulness and enthusiasm (she’ll need to do something special to make me think she should go though. At least, I don’t mind her going, I don’t want to host anyone for 3 months)

    2) my son has done his homework without moaning or me having to say

    3) neither child begs for a snack or pudding, anymore. and we don’t have a long moan if they do ask and I say ‘fruit’

    Hi Candlelight,

It’s been damp & depressing here today too. I managed a short dog walk but it took quite a lot of effort.

How did the exercises go? I’m a yoga fan so am following an online programme.

Hope your mince was yummy. I had spicy soup & mushrooms, I’m already starting to feel full on such a small amount.

    Hope you’re evening is good.

Just dropping in to report another 2lb weight loss this week, taking me to 2st total loss, yay!

Goal for end of this challenge was to get to 10st, so 7lb to go. Let’s wait and see. Well done everyone, great to read all your posts x

  • Shanshu I hope your day improved!

I really need to go shopping for new clothes. I have one new pair of denim shorts, otherwise everything is ridiculously baggy. It hasn’t mattered so much as I’ve mainly been at home (I’m currently a student with long summer holidays) but this semester I’ll be out in work placement and I have nothing at all suitable for a workplace (I’m studying to be a Library technician, one semester to go). Last time I tried shopping I couldn’t quite squeeze into the next size down, hopefully I can now. I’ve been quite surprised how much weight loss it’s taken to go down a clothing size, I’ve lost about 11 kg total.

  • Freeze them for another time, have them later if you want them, or build them into the next days menu, you can be endlessly flexible within the basic parameters of the diet. I wouldn’t force yourself to eat them all just for their nutritional value though, treat it as a mini fast if you are a little low on calories for the day and just back to normal tomorrow.

  • Just checking in to acknowledge all these great efforts and some terrific losses. Boy those last few kilos sound hard to wrangle.

Arcticfox, what an amazing effort. I simply cannot get passed 23 hours (dinner to dinner a couple of times).

I’m not a fasting expert, from what I’ve read from Jason Fung, it seems it can take a while to start burning fat, depending on what you’ve been eating before the fast. For example according to Fung’s analysis, if you have plenty of glycogen in your system, your body can be using that for a while, then there is a phase of protein burning (6-12 hours) and then fat burning. If you’ve been low carb in the lead up to a fast (regular fasters seem to add plenty of fat in day before a fast) this all moves forward. Sounds logical to me but I haven’t read the supporting research. 🤪

And then we read from whoosh effect that once fat burning, your body may well be replacing fat with water which it will eventually release. Bloody hell! What a process. Luckily, regardless of all this, you would have given your metabolism a lovely boost, potentially cleared out some random old proteins and exercised tremendous self control. BIG WINS and hats off to you!

See you in the Feb thread.

  • Ancient Weaver, so sad to hear about you having to avoid dairy. I think I felt similarly when I had to give up soy. I loved it and consumed it in many forms, soy milk every day, tofu, tempeh, etc. I think I actually went through a minor period of grieving for it when I found out I was allergic.
Is Daiya available where you are? It is made in my hometown, so likely more readily available in my area than many other areas maybe. I have heard good things about it, although I have only tried the cream cheese myself. We also have a local company that makes vegan fine ‘cheeses’, and although I have not tried them myself, some of my friends have and have been blown away by how good they taste.
