Great that headache has gone, long may it stay gone.
Just had taco lettuce for dinner with cheese, a bit dry, maybe because I used less than 5% fat mince?

Please let me second C.C. Comments to you Esnecca, you have done so well. Many thanks for the tips I would certainly have missed some of the sugar and who would have thought about the grated cheese.
I am looking forward to seeing the cook book, as I quite a few vegetables to munch through.

Thank you for help and support today it has been wonderful.
    Have a good evening 😊

All the nutrients in fruit are also in vegetables, so if you’re eating plenty of veg then the mouth ulcers aren’t caused by your lack of fruit.

I can understand you missing it though. Pears and stawberries are allowed on the diet as well as the fruits mentioned above. Not too much though as we’re supposed to keep even natural sugar to a minimum, even if not diabetic.

I think I definitely need to vary my veg a bit more. Ive taken some blueberries & raspberries out of the freezer gonna have them with Greek yoghurt for breakfast.

My headache is gone, slightly suspicious as I can’t have got away with it that easily! I have been drinking so much water so it has probably helped. I’m keeping my foods simple & shopping for ingredients daily to start. Once I find out what I like I can start to meal plan.

Esnecca, thanks for the welcome & well done, sounds like this diet has been a huge success for you! I used to be an energetic gym bunny, so really hoping I can get back to that!

  • Bras are and always have been the bane of my life. I am sooo flat chested. One dearly beloved once said “ah, the perfect handful.” Honestly, I would have followed that man to the ends of the earth 🤪. In my defence I was young.

Age, combined with a strong (read broad) back plus back fat, I just haven’t found a comfortable solution. I am really hoping losing the podge will open up some some options. Pretty options would be such a bonus.

I use frozen berries with yoghurt as well, definitely lower in carbs than other fruits. I also ocassionally commit the sin of blending half a banana with some almond milk and yoghurt for a breakfast shake. Now obviously half a banana isn’t officially BSD friendly but it’s better than a whole one, or two lol. I’m happy to accept my losses will be slower if I’m not entirely strict.

I think the secret with fruit is to stick to the lower carb ones and keep your portions small. Very small! It’s worth noting that pretty much every nutrient available in fruit is also available in veg, so if you’re eating a good amount and range of veg then it probably isn’t the lack of fruit that is causing your ulcers.

I’d suggest having a look at what you are eating generally and ensure you’re having a good variety of nutrients, then perhaps a multivitamin might help you along a bit. It’s also worth considering that the mouth ulcers may be co-incidental and nothing to do with what you have or haven;t eaten.

I lost 100 pounds 4 years ago on a very similar diet that I designed myself, but I did allow more starchy carbs. However, I often ate only one meal a day, around 5pm (total of 500-700 cals a day). On weekends, I sometimes had 2 meals (Breakfast and Dinner). I also occasionally did 2 fasting days in a row, with only broth or lemon water. The main reason I am trying this is because I am having yearly blood work done at end of March and need my A1C to be below 6. I have not been officially diagnosed as a Type 2 diabetic but I am very obese and a store bought test had my A1C at a 7 a few months ago. Last year’s blood work was normal.

Must a person eat 2-3 meals a day for this to work?
Are complete fast days (bone broth and water) OK to do 2 times a week?

Also…when I have done low carb in the past, sometimes a kidney will ache and/or I feel like I pass a stone on occasion. It is not horrible enough to go to a doctor but it is a concern. If I add more starchy carbs, this never happens. I also find that my system gets blocked up from too much protein. If I add even a small portion of starch, such as Quinoa or a Pita, I am fine. One of the things that brought me to this diet was the support for fasting and the fact that we are allowed to have some beans.

    Any thoughts?

  • can I join up 🙂

Shansu – don’t be scared of the readings, you can approach this two ways I think.

1- take the readings again and enjoy watching them come down over the time ahead.

    or

2- don’t take the readings, because you know you’re doing everything possible to lower them anyway.

So go with whichever approach works for you (unless a doctor tells you otherwise for medical reasons of course)

I too am a returner so lets get through valentines with a blast and be a size or two smaller 🙂

  • It is possible, Shanshu. The 100 Club has a bunch of members, including myself, alliecat and Jules Maigret who still post on the forum. I lost twice that amount, actually, and if you’d asked me in August 2016 if I could reach that goal I would have laughed until I exploded.

I’m sure I don’t need to tell you this as you were so successful in your first outing so you know very well what it takes, but just for emphasis, the real trick of this way of eating is getting control of your head, not so much your body. It’s your mind that drives you to associate comfort with awful food, certainly not your body. That’s why it’s so important to actively combat those refrains that crop up (a little bit won’t hurt, bad things are happening so I deserve to assuage my pain with sugar, Christmas isn’t Christmas without pie).

You are a self-determined individual with agency and real strength. Believe that about yourself and deploy it consciously when those thoughts crop up. If you find yourself in a cycle that brings you down and kills your motivation, fight back. Say it out loud, yell inside your head, stand tall, straighten your spine and tell your brain to shut up or you’ll stab it with a Q-Tip. You are not a slave to impulses you can’t control. You have proven that you can control the hell out of them. You accomplished your goals in the past and you will do so again.

    Good luck!

That sounds amazing, Allie. I still have leftovers from last week’s chili to finish, but I’m so excited by the prospect of new delicious flavor combinations that might just have to make another batch before this one is finished. I hope the black soybeans do you right. In my experience, they just suck up the spices around them and add great texture and fiber. Keeping my fingers crossed you find the same. 🙂

  • Hi everyone – I’m jumping in early so I can subscribe and make sure I get all the responses.

This is my first time doing a 4wk challenge. I like the idea of looking at it in a much more piecemeal way. I first did the BSD this time last year. I was exceptionally strict on it (although had my own meal plan) and lost 44lbs (just over 3 stone/nearly 20kg).

Then a friend died unexpectedly, immediately followed by Easter (with all the comfort eating chocolate that comes with it) and then a lot of breaks away and I found excuses to eat badly and in some cases, eat too much. In the end I put on about a stone (14lbs/6kg). So, in October I tried again but it didn’t really take. I did it for about a month but wasn’t very strict and I gave up quickly. And then a series of parties and then Xmas and on the 15th Jan I had put on 29lbs (2 stone/13kg). I was very angry with myself but resolved to get back on the BSD immediately.

It’s been a week. I haven’t been overly good (somewhere around 1000 on most days but carbs have been low – under 40 and sometimes much less). And I’ve lost 11.4 lbs (nearly 5kg). I know a lot of it is water but it’s a start.

I have a lot to lose. Another 100lbs (roughly 7 stone/46kg) if I want to be in the middle of the healthy BMI level – although I don’t know if that is even possible for me. I’m aiming to lose at least 81lbs though and want to achieve a decent chunk of that this year. Which is overwhelming. Hence liking the 4 week challenge.

So my goal for the next 4 weeks is to lose at least 10lbs. I’m sure I can achieve that.

I’m looking forward to reading everyone else’s stories and goals and thank you for welcoming me to the challenge.

PS – I am the queen of denial. I started the BSD because of a recently diabetes diagnosis with high choloresterol and high BP thrown in for good measure. By the end of it I was scoring perfectly for all 3. I have been too scared to check what those results are now. I’m going to get back to the weight I was when I finished and then do the blood results and hope that I’m back to the good results I had. Is that stupid?

Just glimpsed this in the news. Renewal of the old high carb, low fat road to obesity. GPs and Practice nurses all over the country will be receiving their bonuses for making sure their cash cows remain fat and profitable. And to think we imagined they were taking some notice of the latest research.

You’re doing it and how. You’ve seen the kind of loss right away that people struggle for weeks to achieve on other diet plans. I think of it as having discovered I’m allergic to carbs. As soon as I cut them drastically, my body leaped into action after decades of sluggishness turning to my copious fat stores for energy. If you do switch to 5:2 after the 8 weeks, I suggest you continue to be draconian in avoiding all simple carbs (wheat, grains, rice, cereals, starchy root veg, sugar). They will just make you hungry for more of them and kick you out of a fat-burning state.

l hadn’t thought of doing more than 1 round of the 8 week, I might give myself a short “break” on the 5:2 and then back to it depending on how I fare with that one. 5 days of “normal” eating will seem alien after the end of this one!

What a fantastic result in such a short period! I had a similar reaction to the BSD. From the first day I could feel how good this was for me. My body and mind responded instantaneously. Because I was hyperobese at 5’2″ and more than 300lb (I refused to weigh myself until 4 weeks in, but I have reason to believe I was at least 325lb), I decided to just keep going on the Fast 800 until I reached a healthy BMI. I was used to the weighing, measuring and counting, loved the food and had energy to spare for my 20,000 step daily walks, so had no reason to stop. I kept to the 800 calories and less than 20 grams of carbs a day for 14 months. When I reached my goal I’d lost at least 200 pounds and now weigh less than I did in high school. I don’t count calories anymore, but still monitor my carbs like a hawk. They are out of my life for good. As I say ad nauseum, not one step backwards.

Congratulations, JennyB, and welcome to the forum!

I have a portion of berries most days – I use frozen berries for convenience and allow myself a small portion with yogurt. 80 grams has 6g of carbs and 60 grams has 4g of carbs – 3g of carbs in the yogurt brings to the total to 7-9g of carbs. Varying the quantity allows me to have a little bit of what I fancy and it hits the spot when I’m craving something sweet.

Hi JRChild – welcome to the forum. Firstly, let me say that I am not a medical professional and do not have experience of taking Prednisone, however, given that you have been off the drug now for three years, I can’t think that tackling the remaining fat, should be any different from tackling fat gained in any other way/ Especially as that fat will have the same health implications are any gained in any other way.

BSD is certainly proven to work, as testified by numerous participants on the forum and these people have all come to the BSD way of eating for a variety of reasons, but the one thing we all have in common, is that we were desperate to find an effective way to rid ourselves of unwanted fat and improve our health.

With luck, someone with experience with use of Predisone will respond to you, but I’d suggest you acquire a copy of Dr Moseley’s book, read it and then if you feel it’s a good fit, give it a try – really all you have to lose is the weight! Also, have a good look around the forum, check out some threads and profiles, so you get a picture of what people are achieving with this way of life.

Whatever you decide to do, I hope you will find a way of losing the weight you want to be rid of and successfully maintain the loss into the future. Best of luck to you.

Well done, Jenny, to both of you. Sounds as though you have made a fantastic start. As Sunny says, don’t worry if the weight loss slows down a bit, or even stalls occasionally, just keep on keeping on and it will start to melt away again.

Also, if you are happy with BSD800 and have a lot of weight to lose, you can do back to back 8 weeks for as long as you feel the need, you don’t have to change to 5:2. There are lots of people on this forum who have done several rounds.

    Good luck, and keep posting.

  • I have to agree about losing boob fat, though I’m still a much larger cup size than you, Jackie, Allie and Essie. But then I started as a much bigger cup size – used to be a 38G but am now a very respectable 32D, which feels tiny in comparison but is actually still quite a large cup size I guess. And, Essie, I agree my bras too now look tiny, and are sooo pretty.

Mayo is fine. It’s made out of eggs and oil, so it has very few carbs. It is high in calories, however, so I make my own out of tofu so I can use as much as I want without having to fear the calorie build-up. Tea is also fine, but dairy milk is high in sugar and the cals can add up far more easily than you might think. A “splash” seems like a little but it rarely is when you actually measure and calculate the true carb and calorie count. If you’re a milky tea person, try an alternative milk like coconut, almond, hemp or soy.

Read the ingredients and nutrional panel of everything when you’re shopping. Look up the stats of fresh food on your phone before you buy it. You’ll be amazed at high in carbs some veg and fruit are, and how many things have added sugars and starches. Even something like pre-grated cheese that should be an easy BSD-friendly choice has potato starch added to keep the stupid shreds from clumping. Anything you see on the label that ends in -ose is a sugar. Then there are a myriad other names that turn out to be sugars and artificial sweeteners (sucralose, aspartame, xylitol, malitol) that can have a blood sugar impact and are bad for your gut bacteria.

Well done all of y’all for taking this step towards good health and liberation. The BSD transformed me from a hyperobese, couch-bound depressive to a slim energy factory with 5 different kinds of sauerkraut in my fridge. It is by far the greatest accomplishment of my life. Welcome to the forum!

Some great positives already posted today. I’m sure that taking a little time out to identify a few daily positives, gives us a mental boost and for sure, it all goes to make for an uplifting read as well.

Not so miffed today as the scales showed a drop of 0.4lb, meaning that extra 0.2lb has already gone. Hoping to be able to report an overall loss tomorrow, but not counting chickens!

    My positives for today are:
    1) We had a sunny morning here today – always helps one feel more positive I find.
    2) Bought a new orchid today, in a very pretty lemony lime shade. I so enjoy my orchids and didn’t have on this colour – until today!
    3) Have decided tomorrow marks the start of a new week on the 800 reboot challenge and I’m going to really knuckle under and religiously weigh, measure and record all I consume. So close to my new target weight now, I just really want to have a good push this week to try to achieve it in the next two weeks.

Hope everyone has a good week and I’ll be looking forward to reading all the positive posts.

I can’t believe I’ve never thought of adding cocoa powder, especially now that I’m obsessed with unsweetened raw chocolate products. Next week’s chili is going to have new and exciting flavors thanks you to you and Allie. 🙂

  • Kazz, those boots are the most badass cowboy boots I’ve ever seen. The combination of classic cowboy with classic biker (square toe, buckled straps) is fantastic. You are going to feel like you can kick the world’s ass when you stomp the floor in those bad boys. Snap them up!

Jackie, I don’t even know what cup size I was at my heaviest because I was too embarassed to get fitted, but suffice it to say that my cups runnethed over in a 50DD. I’m 34B now, and I only need a B because of the room it gives for the weird loose armpit skin to have a place to pool. It takes some getting used to, no question. I bought some cute lacy bralettes at a post-Christmas sale and stared at the mirror for a solid 5 minutes to make sure I wasn’t hallucinating. They looked like butterlies compared to the tank-like bras I had to wear when I was obese.

Both my husband and I are on the higher end of the “obese” scale (AARGH), we have tried loads of diets together and separately (including the juice only diet by Joe Cross) but ended up putting on more weight, you know the usual yo-yo routine.

We have started this on 13/01/18, we thought it’d be easier to start on a Saturday in case there were temptations, headaches etc.. at least we’d have time off to rest.

We weighed in on 20/01/18, I have lost 1st 2.0lb and my husband so far has lost 1st 4.8lb! We are amazed!

We still have a LONGGG way to go, but we are loving this plan, and going to go onto the 5:2 when we finish in 6.5weeks.

I’d recommend this to anyone, the recipes are fantastic, there are hardly any cravings, (handful of walnuts if needed, or a hot tea before bed), and haven’t felt the need to “cheat” at all!

I personally need to be more active, my husband is happy with exercise, I can’t stand it! I’m going to look to see if I can do something calm at first like yoga, pilates or swimming.

I am documenting all my food on Instagram too, I find this really helpful as a visual reminder of what I’m eating (user name on IG is snorlaxjen)

I’d never thought I’d say this about a diet but… I’m looking forward to the next 6.5 weeks! Bring it on!

  • I feel for you, ladies watching things disappear of a delicate nature, however, as my cup size is about the size of my head, I can’t wait for my 48H to subside! In fact, they are subsiding now. Oh to be able to run for a bus or just hurry up. To not enter a room 5 minutes after my frontage! Neck ache a thing of the past! Looking forward to it! 🙂

Hi Allie and other chili lovers on this thread — your comment about adding a little garam masala to your chili recipe made me think of my mom’s very old Cincinnati chili (she grew up in Cincinnati which she always reminded us was the “Queen City of the West” — which we always laughed at as we are Californians) but I digress—
Her chili recipe includes the usual chili powder and cumin but also paprika (2 teas) cayenne (3/4 teas) allspice (1/2 teas) cinnamon (1/2 teas) turmeric (1/2 teas) ground coriander (1/2 teas) ground cardamom (1/4 teas) unsweetened cocoa powder (2 Tablespoons) molasses (2 Tablespoons) and cider vinegar (2 Tablespoons) — (that’s all for 1 pound meat and 1 large can crushed tomatoes).
So I can see why garam masala works!!

    Hi,
Yes think I need to meal plan properly on this one. I had downloaded the two day trial and fortunately I had most of the ingredients. Although a lot were frozen, as a lot cheaper to buy and keep the vitamins longer than fresh veg.
Thinking about headache is giving me one lol.
No one has said anything about feeling hungry that I have seen?? Although I had the mushroom and spinach omelette did not have chives but put a few bits of onion in that was good. Unbelievably I had some halloumi in the fridge and frozen asparagus for lunch all very tasty.
Thank you for the tips re Mayo and hot drinks.
Just out of interest have you noticed much change in yourself after 1week?
Also just ordered recipe book, anyone else got it? Or do you use the receipes on the website?
    Happy eating 😊

  • Hello everyone,

I have opened a new thread ready for us to jump over to when we’ve posted our final weigh-in tomorrow.

Look for “KEEPING CARBS AT BAY OVER VALENTINE’S DAY” 4WK CHALLENGE ENDS 20TH FEB (title courtesy of Topcac who will join us later. Thanks TC x)

Hoping for some wonderful results to wind up this challenge.

BTW, Natalie, I saw on another thread that you needed to make adjustments upwards with your carb count, due to some adverse reactions. More power to you, recognising a real problem and dealing with it without panic or emotional eating, well, I’m proud of you xx

Into the countdown, Milalin, good thoughts going your way.

    See you all tomorrow, MFODAAT

  • We will do what it says…. work to keep those starchy carbs at bay for the four weeks that include Valentine’s Day and therefore progressing our drive to: lose weight;
    reduce meds;
    reverse illness;
    fit into smaller clothes;
any or all of the above or more…..

Please join the wonderful group of challengers for our next four week challenge, beginning tomorrow after we sign off from our “happy new year/great good cheer” challenge. Everyone welcome.

    Hi Everyone,

Maybe its because I have a physically active job, but I have noticed a major change in my legs and arms, and have lost inches around the end of my rib cage, but haven’t lost the 11 month pregnant with twins style belly. So am a couple of pounds short of a 4 stone weight loss but have only just dropped one dress size. I am still aiming for my target weight at present which is another 11kg away, but clearly am going to have to revise my target once I get down to the current target. On previous cal counting diets after a couple of stone I have needed to drop down a dress size . I do notice that for example my ankles are smaller, which I think is one of the reasons there is extra toe space in my shoes, my feet are fitting further back into the shoe so space has appeared at the toes. My neck has changed. My calf area has changed a lot, I have some loose skin at present on my arms, but surprisingly not so much on my legs.

you feel about not knowing how to feel….. Strange!

I’ve only been going for a week and I completely agree I felt a bit frazzled heading out to do my first proper BSD food shopping. I ended up making quite a few changes to suit budget / waste as I went along. Week 2 meals are pretty extravagant – lobster, crab, prawns, passionfruit… etc. these things are way out of my budget so I’m just substituting with the best I can. I did substitute pumpkin for sweet potato in the Veg curry in Week 1 and it was “ok” but when I had the leftovers a few nights later for my dinner, i bloated up like a balloon, so maybe that wasn’t a good swap!
I’m still having coffee every day – single shot with a splash of milk (down from a normal flat white!) and a cup of tea in the morning (splash of milk).
Mayo – I would just substitute with yoghurt or sour cream.
My headaches passed after probably day 4.
    GOOD LUCK!

This has turned into a very thought provoking conversation
today, and it’s particularly interesting to me because I’ve never
done WW or any other directed program before this one, apart
from self imposed calorie restriction in the neighborhood of
550-600 cal/day. My reward for doing so was that my hair began
to fall out after 5 months and 60lbs! Did any of you all take
measurements before you started? I never did, but I do remember
approx. what my waist measurement was then, and it’s 21″
smaller today. I really do agree with the visceral fat, the really
bad stuff, hanging about the waist, and this WOE certainly
addresses that. Some see very early changes that are dramatic,
and others find this problem area slow to shift. I also wonder
what role aging has to play in all these changes….My skin is
definitely thinner, because I have some very prominent veins
that now stand out in high relief, and I’ve never seen this at
any weight. Who knew we had 2 very large veins running
from our lower abdomen toward our thighs?? 🙂 It’s all
quite entertaining, and feels like one colossal anatomy
    lesson!
Tilly, your foot diagnosis confirms mine, and I really ap-
preciated the cautionary tale to hold off on the purchase
of new shoes if possible, so I’m just passing it on in like
fashion. There’s always a new bullet point to absorb 🙂

    Have a great day, everyone!

I grow my own apples. They’re really ugly with spots and lumps and some of them are full of grubs – BUT i cut up the grub-free ones, skin, core and everything, stew them in water, and i have them with my “no carb bircher” from the BSD book for breakfast. Good fibre content, and I’ve been told they dont have much sugar so are one of the better fruit to eat. Maybe try that? Add some blueberries too?
It’s hot summer where I live and I’m cutting up big hunks of fresh watermelon for other people to enjoy – how I would love to scoff down some of that!

    Me too!
My loss isn’t as impressive as yours Oddjob, but i’m still very impressed (2.9 kgs in a week)
One week down, and I agree after probably 2 days I wasn’t feeling hungry between meals which was a huge surprise. I’m still making some carb-y foods for my son, and managing to avoid them myself without too much angst. Tonight we had “Luxury Fish Pie”. Couldn’t find any celeriac so it was topped with half mashed potato for the carb-eater, and a bit of grated parmesan on my side.
The only thing I have found so far which weakens me a little is the thought that I might never eat a hunk of fresh white bread with butter and vegemite, or a pizza, or garlic bread, or cheese and crackers again! I’m not sure I will manage that. I’m already justifying it to myself for later…
Also enjoying the suggested mindfulness App – Headspace. Worth trying if you havent already.

    Hi CC,

I hope the headache has started to ease.
oh boy need to keep the fluids up then, really not looking forward to that part.
Yep, not sure either, I have read the book and the menu planners, just seems a bit random. I need a list of things, like mayonnaise is it good or bad? When can I fit a cup of tea in? Although some very good ideas such as if feeling hungry take a walk or phone someone. The nhs website has a good calorie counter.
Haven’t booked a holiday yet, just want to get back into my clothes, which are not anywhere near fitting me.
A wake up call when I checked Bmi and waist measurements quite shocking, however my friend has lost 9lb since Christmas and I don’t think she started it straight away, very inspiring.
So yes we can do this 😊

Sorry if this has been mentioned before but I’ve been doing BSD for 3 weeks and have lost 14lbs so far, however I am really missing fruit and seem to be getting a lot of mouth ulcers – any advice would be good.
