Hi grandma48,
I am sorry I ‘posted’ the last post before I had finished, I am crap at these sort of things! ( iPads and computers) you wouldn’t believe I used to work in computers in another life, when they were as big as a small office! However didn’t keep up with technology so here I am struggling to get things right, I am due at the docs next week and am hoping he will be kind to me and say well done! Also off on holiday the week after, so worried I won’t be able to stick to the diet and exercise. Will just have to get back on the ‘horse’ when I get back, good luck with you and your journey, you too mosleyfan, by the way I am 68 while I am on holiday so no pressure! -
Thanks for the info on xylitol Mary, my dentist told me all sweeteners are bad for the teeth so there is some good news at last!
Maybe its not so much limiting the carbs for healthy children, more teaching them to eat the right kinds. So called treats are not treats these days, they are every day occurrences. It would be nice if we could all get back to a situation where a piece of cake or whatever was a rare luxury. And it would do no harm to change the emphasis away from bread, pasta, potatoes and rice to good quality meat and vegetables. The latest stats say that a third of children aged between 2 and 15 are now obese or overweight. We need to turn this around before it gets any worse.

If we get 10,000 signatures the government has to respond. 100,000 and it has to be ‘heard’.
When it goes live you can click on ‘map’ and track the number of signatures in each area. It also gives the name of the MP for each area – so lots of lobbying potential!

I’m creeping in with my tail between my legs! Did really well all day (day 5, very pleased with myself) but fell victim to catastrophic eating tonight (scones were involved, let’s say no more).
I think in the big scheme of things it won’t be too bad… I have an off-plan dinner scheduled for tomorrow but I’ll keep calories to a bare minimum during the day, then on Friday I am getting back on plan. That’ll make this week kind of a 2-5 I suppose, with 5 days low calorie and 2 a bit higher.

Hi grandma48
I started the diet in February, just about to finish the seventh week so not so new, however was a watcher and reader of the forum for a little while, I am on a plateau at the moment , I lost 14lb in the first four weeks, up to now in the last three weeks I’ve only lost 3lb so a bit frustrated thats when I downloaded the fat secret app, recommended by mosleyfan, I am still finding my way around it.
Hi mosleyfan where is the pie chart haven’t found it yet? -
HI Fofi,
I do think that you are absolutely right to be looking at reducing the amount of sugar in your childrens’ diet- as a retired dentist I can say that this will be of enormous benefit for the health of their teeth, quite apart from their long term health in general. Does your dental practice have a dental health educator, who would be able to give you suggestions for sugar free alternatives? You are quite right though to be educating their taste away from sweet foods, and not wanting to use artificial sweeteners, however, sometimes you need something to counteract the acidity of things like yoghurt, and for baking. I think from your posts that you are already ahead of the pack in knowing that things like honey, agave syrup and maple syrup are just as bad, and in some cases worse, than ordinary sugar! However, there are two which are good natural substitutes, don’t cause dental decay, and are low calorie- xylitol and stevia. In fact xylitol is actually beneficial for teeth. Personally, I use xylitol, its easier to get hold of, and you can bake with it, though it may take a bit of adjustment. I am told, not being much of a baker myself, that it lowers the temperature of the mix somehow so may need a higher temp or longer bake. Patrick Holford’s Low GI diet cookbook has a good few recipes including biscuits, shortbread, that tick our BSD boxes, and use low carb flours and xylitol. I haven’t calorie counted any of them yet; I will try a couple.
My experience with two children and two grandchildren is that there’s a good chance they won’t get a sweet tooth if you limit the sweet foods and in particular drinks that they have- fruit juice is a major culprit.
Kid’s breakfast foods can be a big problem, most of them are heavily loaded with sugar, porridge is your best bet. I believe shredded wheat is OK, but would need to check that out. All I can say is get reading the labels!
I wouldn’t be concerned about giving them bread, (good whole grain bread of course, not the white rubbish) the sugar in good bread is only to feed and activate the yeast, and is very low. Or make your own, or try the flat breads and waffles on this site and in the book.
Biscuits- not much alternative here other than to bake your own; I found a fab recipe for choc chip cookies on the internet, I’ll try and post it up.
Yoghurt- I’d try natural yog, and add enough pureed fruit and xylitol until they’d eat it- trial and error.
On a separate question, I wonder of we need to limit the carbs for healthy children? If they are not overweight, they should be able to deal with them. It different for us, when our metabolism is cocked up from past mistakes! -
Thanks everyone. Keeping control of what I can helps in stressful times. In this case it’s keeping tight control of the food π³

Hi eghime
Welcome to the BSD forum, great to have another recruit to the diet and the forum. This diet is not low fat, but the exact opposite – even saturate fat. What you do need to watch with coconut flour is the high calorie and high carb content. However, if a dish incorporating coconut flour fits into your 800cals everyday, it’s fine, but because of the high calorie and carb content of this flour, it is unlikely you will want to use it that frequently, but more probably once or twice a week maybe.
Hope you will be posting results and using the forum for support and tips as your journey progress. -
Following on from my post yesterday about sugar in meat and poultry products, I’ve just sent this email.
“Dear Mr Rowe
I regularly buy food from your stores, but have a question which I hope you can answer.
Could you please explain why so many of your meat and poultry products contain sugar? I recently looked at the ingredients on a pack of sliced cooked meat which showed a carbohydrate value of zero, but gave a total sugar value per 100g which I struggled to understand.
Both the whole roasted chickens and the roasted chicken portions are roasted in a sugar marinade.
In light of the current obesity epidemic, and the rising number of diabetics in this country would it be possible (if not advisable) to produce meat and poultry products which do not contain sugar? After all, most people would not expect to find sugar added to meat and poultry.
I look forward to hearing your comments. ”
When (and if) I get a reply I’ll let you know what he says.

I have had tinnitus for 18 months or so and recently had an MRI scan. Luckily this came back clear but my tinnitus is always worse around 3 or 4 in the morning and always wakes me up and it is difficult to get back to sleep. I have sometimes thought it is worse when I am trying to lose weight and noticed when I was on 5.2 diet that it seemed to be worse on fasting days. Does anyone else have a similar problem? Would be great to hear from you.

Hello, I have just started the diet but am a little concerned about using coconut flour as it is very high in saturated fat. I am worried that my cholesterol levels will go up. Is there a recommended maximum amount of this flour that can be used, say weekly?
Many thanks -
Sorry guys but the book says you stick to 800 calories as well as exercise.
There’s no provision for adding calories burnt, but think how fast that weight is going to drop off. π -
Great, that will help! Thank you.

Really sad news captainlynne, you have done well to keep to the plan. Take care of yourself. x

-
Liz I just wrap them in a food bag and put them in the fridge.
They’re still good next day. -
Ps, pineapple and mango are really lovely in yoghurt but I can’t have them on this diet!
-
Hi Fofi,
Yes, I see just where you are coming from. I buy my full fat yoghurt in 200 ml pots (50pence) so they are good for up to four servings and last for about four or five days in the fridge. I find the fat makes it less sour tasting, to me its like eating cream! I have sweetened it before with honey. Not ideal but at least natural. Coconut oil is also quite good as a sweetener but it is a solid in the yoghurt due to the low temp. Also, any fruit you add would give some sweetness. Apple is lovely, as is pear and grapes. -

Hi Quickfix – I felt that too walking the dogs up a hill I walk every day. It didn’t happen to me till the second week. It happened for a few days, gradually lessening. Hope you are feeling better tomorrow.

I posted earlier but can’t find the post!!! Anyway I think the petition is a fabulous idea and I am sure we could get the signatures we need even though it has to be just in the UK. There must be hundreds on this site and I bet they don’t all post. I am telling everyone about this diet and 2 friends have just bought glucose meters to see if they have got pre diabetes and also pedometers to increase walking. Hashimoto says petition is not live yet so that must be why I couldn’t find it. Will someone post when it is live please in case I miss it. Thanks. New people …….. don’t take any notice of the negative comments, this diet DOES work. I go on facebook rarely but will go on if I can do anything to help the cause.

I’m on my third day and have had headaches every day. Yesterday and today felt very queasy also. I took some migraine medication and felt better. I am certain this is just withdrawal symptoms from carbs and sugar. I regularly suffer from migraines and hope that stabilising my blood sugar levels will help having less migraines, after my body gets acclimated to the diet of course.
-
Some protein and some fat is what you should reach for Quickfix. An omelette fried in butter with some cheese, mushrooms, etc. Some nuts. A slice of cooked meat and some avocado. Some full fat yoghurt with some berries and seeds.
-
Hi, there are too many battles to fight them all at once and so we picked some and it seems we picked some of the wrong ones. Or at the very least we should have reassessed our position as time went on. Only recently when feeding them dough balls I was more worried about the amount of garlic butter they were eating, rather than the number of dough balls!
Most of the kids yoghurt comes in smaller containers, and another (possibly wrong) lesson I have been trying to teach is that you don’t ask for something from the fridge, eat half leave the rest. Maybe getting used to leaving stuff would be better.
I am looking to get them eating the foods we eat, but I need some intermediate steps. Tonight we are making our own strawberry yoghurt (Greek yoghurt and strawberries, and possibly something to sweeten it a little which I can reduce over time).
-
Can coconut flatbreads be made the day before eating, or are they better freshly made? Or can they be frozen?
-
Throughout my life I have occasionally suffered from that cold sweat, weak muscles starving feeling. I am 53 and on day 3 of the BSD. I was out walking today, I have two dogs that I walk a lot! And I had one of those weak and feeble happenings, dripping with cold sweat, shaky, weak muscles and stumbling a bit. Struggles on & back to the car. In the past I would have stuffed myself with choc & carbs. What should I reach for now on this eating plan?

Welcome to all the newbies and keep up the good work.

Patsy, yes gram flour and water and a tiny bit of olive oil. The recipe is in the recipe section, about page 7 (+/-).
I have had a range of strengths and brittleness. I have used a slightly more runny batter sometimes and I have made thicker and thinner flatbreads. Possible the pan temperature matters. It is worth experimenting. Some would definitely have been strong enough for fajitas.
-
Thank you SunnyB, yes everyone is very helpful. That’s a good thought about eating the 800 on my walking days. To be honest some days I don’t feel I want 800, but conscious that I need to eat enough calories.

Or perhaps a trapeze instead of the fireman’s pole? And perhaps a trampoline if you have space. Then you could swing from the top of the washer over to the trampoline and exercise there π

Today’s menu:
B – yogurt with mixed seeds and ground linseed topping
L – homemade veggie soup with full fat creme fraiche
D – sea bass fillet, with mixed shellfish foil cooked with olive oil and lemon and kale
various herbal teas and water -
I don’t think it matters what colour. I prefer pink too.

Hey Dippymint
Just wanted to say welcome to the BSD forum and well done you! Really excellent result and I’m sure it will redouble your determination to stick with it. I’m not sure about the question of whether or not to increase you calories on your exercise days. My inclination would be to add the calories to you intake on the days you are very much below 800 and not on those that are, but hopefully someone more qualified will offer some advise soon.
Meanwhile, keep going and keep posting. -

Dear Lucia, great news about the blouse, I also have issues with painting toenails etc but I am determined it won’t be for much longer. Have you considered installing a lap dancing pole strategically positioned near the washer to use like a firemans pole to gracefully get down from the washer? Heard they are also a good form of exercise. π―

Orchid, there’ll be dishes with both lemon slices and lime slices so folk can choose either (or both!).

Silly question time: if they decide it’s not compliant, can it be amended or do we have to start again?

Hi madmare,
Yes, unfortunately we do need to at least count the cals and carbs in milk, even when its just in coffee. If you can make the switch to tea then all the better. But there are also milk substitutes you could try such as soya milk (don’t go mad if you have an underactive thyroid), coconut milk, almond milk. Always go unsweetened with these. They have fewer carbs than cow’s milk. -
Hi guys,
I started this last Monday and my weigh in on Sunday was 8lb down. I’ve been lurking in the forums and reading lots of great posts on here. You are all a very supportive crowd.
I have a question ‘re exercise and calories burned, I’ve started to walk 3 miles at least 5 times a week and on these days I burn approx 300 calories but don’t add to my 800. Some days I may only have 600 calories which would mean 300 if I take off calories burned, should I be adding g t he calories burned to my 800 per day or not?
Cheers Dippymint x
