Carb-squitoes – I’m with you all the way on that description Lucia. In fact it actually made me laugh out loud for real!
They’re terrible pesky things. Without them I have :
    no acid reflux
    improved asthma
    no flare up of diverticulitis
    no weight gain

I’m beginning to think those nasty little things cause a lot of damage to our bodies.

I laugh in the face of carb-squitoes.

Let’s have spinach yum yum yum I adore the stuff. I must be the only person who used to beg for spinach as a toddler. I think it was something to do with popeye?

    So you naughty carbs,
    A 4inch raw spud = 284 calories and 64.5 carbs.
Even if I do a dish with it and share it between hubby and me, it is still 142 calories and 32.3carbs.

How can you do this to me? I thought you loved me.

Cauliflower is a nice quiet friend, this quiet, unassuming, little thing will offer me for 9.3 ounces only 66 calories and 14 Grams of carbs.

I can use cauliflower for the old fashioned dish, mince and mash.

I am so sorry after so long, our relationship has dwindled and is no longer, goodbye potato, goodbye. Think kindly of me

    Hi Hashimoto,
You know I told you I had been thinking as I walked.

    Well, here’s one.

I am having difficulty with the carbs?
This poor little fluffy creature, how never wanted to hurt anyone, just wanted to be loved, now, I have to hit it with a. Big stick.

Oh dear, I am so sorry, there poor little mites.

I am trying to imagine them as mosquitos, those buzzing , horrible things, who, as soon as I hear them, I roll a newspaper up ready to swat them.

    Carb- squitos.

Hi, I too am very interested if finding out more about Inulin. I saw Angela Ripon talking about this on the recent programme and ordered some which arrived today, if Michael or anybody in the know could give us a heads up about it’s use it would be much appreciated as it would be good to get an evidence based approach to it’s consumption and dosage. Also, I believe it’s the roots and not the leaves Hashimoto that this is produced from……seems a shame to dig them up though. I think all of us BSDers are doing what we can to keep as healthy as possible but when you saw the lifestyle and how well Angela did with all the other tests the TOFI thing came as a bit of a wake up call to a lot of us.

    Happy Sunday!

Week 4 stars now and I am excited to be adding strengthening excercises to my routine!

Lost another 4 lbs and .5″ , so I get my pedicure this week! Not a moment too soon!

I’ve made my lunches (turkey bolo and zucchini noodles) for the week and it’s so nice out I have my bedding airing outside πŸ˜„

I experimented with a low carb cheesecake last week, it was meh. Plus I had a small spike in my fasting BS the next day, so not worth it!

    Make today a great day!

  • posted by  neohdiver on How to diet if you cook for a family?
    on in Fast 800

Depends on what results you are hoping to achieve.

The research that inspired this diet used 600 calories of liquid meals + 200 calories of low carb veggies. It induced diabetic remission in 100% of the obese, newly-diagnosed diabetics. The follow-up study was less successful (somewhere around 50%, I believe), with high success in newly-diagnosed (<4 years) and much lower with longer-term diagnoses. A third study is in progress to see if it is as successful with home implementation (less monitoring).

If you are only trying to lose weight, 800 calories of twinkies will accomplish that – at roughly the same rate as following the diet. You’ll probably struggle more (a lot more) with sticking to the diet – since twinkies often trigger cravings for more twinkies.

The beauty of this diet (for most people who are unable to stick to diets without feeling starved) is that it removes/minimizes strong hunger triggers (carbs) and replaces them with things that make you feel satiated for longer (fats and proteins & to a lesser extent certain complex carbohydrates). [This is not universally true – for me, fats trigger cravings, as does the lack of carbs. So I actually struggle more with this diet than with other diets. I’ve learned to sort out which fats trigger cravings (bacon, for one) and avoid them. But it is largely true for most people]

They beauty for long term maintenance is that you can easily scale up the principles (what foods to eat lots of, what to avoid) to a higher calorie level because you are eating real, healthy, food. You don’t have to make a change to non-diet food once you reach your weight loss goal – you just get to eat more of what you’re eating to lose weight.

You might be better off in the long run by feeding your family this diet, perhaps supplemented by things you shouldn’t eat – and just eating less of what you are feeding them. This goes to the last point I made – this isn’t diet food. It is food everyone can eat and enjoy that would generally contribute to better health for all of your family.

I’m trying to psych myself up to start the 800 cal, 8 week diet, but I cook for my family and I am seriously wondering how doable this diet will be?

I have successfully lost weightbefore, 3 stones (and put it ALL back on again!) on a low carb diet, by eating family meals, but substituting the carbs with salad or green veg for myself and this seems to be more workable, rather than following the diet plan to the letter, which would necessitate cooking separate meals for myself.

If I still keep to 800 cals per day, but don’t follow the diet plan in the book, will I still achieve the same results?

Hi Molly I’m newish too – well 2 weeks in and still learning. How have you got on for your first day? I found it took over a week to really work out this new way of eating. I stupidly didn’t weight for first week, but have lost about 4 pounds this week, which is great for me. I’m finding it quite easy, and don’t crave sweets and crisps like I used to. I used to eat for emotional reasons, and binge at times on junk food. I ate continually, now I’m on 3 meals a day and no snacks. I feel happy I’m in control at the moment. Let us know how you get on – the support is great here x

  • Your weight loss will depend on how much of a calorie deficit you are creating by eating 800 calories a day. The weight you are carrying on your body requires calories to sustain – the more you weigh, the more calories you need to sustain it. That means that people who weigh more are creating a larger calorie deficit when they drop to 800 calories a day) and, by and large, men weigh more than women – so they will lose more weight. This basic reality is why weight loss slows to a creep when you approach your goal – as you lose weight, you but eat the same calories, your calorie deficit drops and your weight loss slows.

I’ve been eating 1200 calories/day since October 2. In 179 days I lost 47.1 lbs = 1.84 lbs/week (average – as noted above, faster in the beginning; slower as I lose weight)
    I’ve been eating 800 calories a day since March 28. In 21 days I lost 7.8 lbs = 2.6 lbs/week.

Theory: the additional weekly calorie deficit I created was 2800 calories ((1200-800)*7), so I should be losing weight at a rate of .8 lbs per week faster than I have been (2800 additional deficit/3500 calories per pound).

Reality: Over the 3 weeks, I lost an average of .76 lbs/week more than I had been. The real change in rate of loss is pretty darn close to the predicted change in weight loss when I switched to 800 calories.

    Hello Mrs Type2 πŸ™‚

A friend and I were talking about this just a couple of days ago, it’s definitely a ‘thing’ that happens when you stop eating carbs.

My own theory is that it’s wheat related and possibly a GM crop thing. Both my friend and I only get reflux from bread – not potatoes or rice.

Whatever the reason, it’s fantastic to be reflux free!

    Hi Lostgirl,

I had a feeling that Coke Life still contained sugar so I just checked on their website to be sure… It has 45% less sugar that coke (because of the added stevia) but in a 330ml can that still means you’re getting 19g of sugar (35g in a can of normal coke).

It’s obviously up to you whether you think you need it, but I would definitely try to wean myself off it if I were you. That’s a huge sugar hit for something that isn’t going to fill you up at all, and has no nutritional benefit. Could you try carbonated water flavoured with some fresh lemon or lime? Or even some sugar free squash – maybe not ideal but a lot better than coke?

Hope you find a compromise that works for you πŸ™‚

I also have scales that measure fat, water content, muscle, etc. I stopped using them as the readings can get quite bizarre. For instance, first thing in the morning, the readings look really bad because you haven’t been hydrating through the night. The readings are better in the evening, but of course, then you haven’t really got an empty stomach or the same baseline every day. I decided they just upset me so I just stick with the scales and the ketostix now. Oh yes – I got my first 8 on the ketotix last night!

Hi, I put an earlier post on regarding high cortisol and weight loss. I realize what I am more interested in knowing is whether low calorie diet has caused cortisol increase (extra stress on the body) and if so how to handle. I understand that high cortisol can affect insulin levels and weight loss.

Looks like women have a harder go of it than blokes πŸ™ but I still feel better on it so will keep going. Iv just switched to Greek yougurt and fruit like you Funky and I think I’ll track my loses in my profile like you Deb – good idea! I’m in y 50s as well Tallyhoo so same boat! Haven’t had wheat, etc for a while because my hasiamotos inflames my stomach etc and I don’t absorb vitamins etc so have to get injections. If I go almost all paleo my antibodie levels come down and I feel better. Milk is fine for me. I’m not diabetic but have a clotting problem which, along with the multiple decades of undiagnosed hash I ment I put on weight and had no energy to do much. That’s improved since Meds and vitamins and Paleo. I lost 10 kilos over the last few years just making that change.

Thanks again. Will keep you posted.

Hi John, glad the flatbreads worked for you – I love them!! I much prefer them to cauli rice, even though I am very fond of cauliflowers! They seem a much more authentic addition to the curry than cauli rice.

I try slightly different combinations of seeds / spices each time I make them. Oddly rosemary and caraway seeds is a nice combo – but not for a curry! I have those spread with cream cheese and slices of tomatoes.

I would have a look at the list of ingredients of both products and see how similar they are. If stevia is the only sweetener they are using and there doesn’t appear to be too many other man-made substances in it, it might be ok. As with many other things these days, maybe you have to test it for a few days and see what effect it has. For what its worth, I am also a true Pepsi max devotee but it was creeping back in and I wasn’t losing weight. I have stopped all sweeteners for now and am finding that the water is getting easier the more I drink it and it is becoming less of a chore. And I am losing weight again. Its definitely worth trying to kick the habit even if it has to be bit by bit.

Lynne, That really made me chuckle :0 Some people round here have literally had their goldfish swimming on the law as the pond has over flowed!!

Somehow I have always ended up in a house with an overgrown/neglected garden! My last one was, as the local nursery man used to say, 125 years of neglect lol! He said it was impossible to sort it out. After I did he would always embarrass me by shouting out to other customers ‘ see this wee slip of a girl ( I was thin at the time) you wouldn’t believe what she has managed to do……’ My toes used to curl.

Well, at least we end up with a blank canvas ( and hopefully some mature plants) when we tackle the overgrowth. I couldn’t physically do it again so I had better stay put this time πŸ™‚

Hi Hashimoto, so glad the BSD has helped you. We all have our problems don’t we! My Diabetes was induced by steroids, whilst using it for Crohns Disease, many years ago. I was insulin dependent for about 18 months whilst the steroids got out of my system. That was about 30 years ago, & I was Diabetes-free until about 7 years ago when it reared its ugly head again. I am again on insulin. I had a total thyroidecomy a few years ago so am regularly taking Thyroxine which also makes it difficult to loose any weight. After a while you get so fed up taking medication don’t you? Meds for this, meds for that! I am looking forward to giving the BSD challenge a go to see if by getting my weight down this way, will ease a lot of my various symptoms, naturally, without medical intervention. Would be nice for me, personally, to be in control for a change instead of my meds!
Hoping the BSD resolves a lot of your problems too. Please keep in touch & let us all know how you are going with your challenges.
