    Hi Jan,

    Welcome back…glad you had funπŸ˜‰

I had a wobble yesterday and went off plan for the day…boy, do I regret that .😲..had a serious food hangover this morning. Think I had just gotten a little bored as my weight had stalled again, after 20+ weeks you would think I would be more accepting of my weight loss patternπŸ˜„ will be glad to join you back on the (long distance) wagon though…onwards!!

  • 54 you are doing fantastic, I wouldn’t worry about my counting carb talk…. keep up with what you’re doing now and enjoy all the rewards!!

I know for myself that to drop any weight I have to pay attention to the carbs. I quit eating bread, pasta, potatoes, rice, etc from the beginning but didn’t count carbs (well except for my 2 desserts(!) this past weekend I’ve been dessert/sugar free too) but weight loss is slow or stagnant even with staying at 800 calories; if I have a serving of dessert or bread it sets me back.

I think the journey changes a bit as you go. I started losing weight at 105.9kg (233 lbs) in high school through what we’d call mindfulness, and for me it included prayer. It all came pouring off 20 lbs a month at a time with plateaus in between as I’d learn a new food habit to add or subtract. After a couple of years I’d changed a lot of habits and they’ve stuck for over 15 years. But getting rid of the last 20 has been a challenge. It seems to require a lot of diligence and faithfulness. And not very much cake πŸ˜‰ I really want a treat or splurge along the way, but it always sets me back, especially if it awakens the craving beast within!

I’m excited for all of us as we get some hard earned results and at least don’t have to battle hunger (after the initial adjustment to the diet).

Snoop, the book is really encouraging and the recipes will help tons to get you started without having to think through all the details for every single meal. You’ll have more of an idea what to work on after that. I think just starting with 800 calories at least eases you into portion measuring and mindfulness. You’re off to a good start just tackling it!

    Hi Annette, welcome along.
I really hope, as well as your weight, this way of eating will help some of your other health issues too. I am really looking forward to hearing of your progress. Best wishes.
Fortunately exercise isn’t important for loosing weight and hopefully as you become healthier you may be able to incorporate some into your plan.
My worry for you eating fewer than 800 calories longer term is making sure that you are getting adequate amounts of all the essential nutrients. Remember our bodies can make glucose if needed- so low carb intake isn’t an issue- but protein, certain fatty acids, minerals and many vitamins are needed regularly. In other words make sure you are eating a balanced diet and include supplements if necessary.

  • Hi all you lovely BSD peeps

IM BACKKKKKK. yeahhhhhh in the land of the living again, been in Norfolk in no signal land durrrrrrr and even my jawbone gave up the plot, had to reconfigure it all again. Been nnnnaughty big time, it’s my weigh day today but was travelling so will do it tomorrow. It’s not going to be good. But eaten loads of carbs which none of them were enjoyable, but I was in hol mode and couldn’t flip myself out of it. But from now I am going public on here to say I am in serious BSD mode again. This minute. Few what a relief. Didn’t like being out of control, and over the past few days have felt very muzzy headed, drugged feeling.

So what have I missed, are you all okay, missed you all.😊😊😊

  • I live off-grid, Tabletalk, so no freezer. And 54, it’s people like you who are making it worse for me! Two of the local old boys have been round since Monday with yet more melons – the weather is so hot that they’ve got to be eaten now or never – and I’ve had to bung a few in the compost bin. Sacrilege, but there is no-one else to give them to. Most of the peaches will go the same way. One of the guys said he’d be back in a few days with more and I had to tell him that what we were really short of was green vegetables in a bid to stop him from coming and certainly from bringing more fruit. I was mortified, but there was nothing else for it.

I’m going to hold out for now like this, but I’m due to get MM’s book and the recipe book around 20 September, so if I’ve seen no improvement by then, I’m going start strict carb counting as well. I’ll be interested to see how easy it will be for me to follow the meal plan, which would be by far the best way to go about it.

Enjoy the pancakes, 54. Did you lose your ponds in the canal?

  • Hey Lucyjane
Hope things are going okay for you. You certainly seem to have the exercise schedule sorted and are tracking your intake pretty well too. It takes time to get into the swing of things properly, but you will get there.
I’m mid-point week 10 second time around. I’m down by 17lb at the moment. Struggling a bit to get the next pound off, but I haven’t been as strict as I should have been over the last week or so, with cals sneaking up a bit. Managing to keep the carbs in check pretty much most of the time. I no longer need or want sweet stuff, bread, spuds etc, etc.
Would like to be down by another 7lb by Christmas, but we are about to go away for almost six weeks, so I’m not banking on losing all of those 7lb by then. Not going to beat myself up if it doesn’t happen, ‘cos I know it will happen at some point.
    Good luck everyone.

I started this diet in April, lost a stone, kept to it, decided to take a week off before starting the 5:2 and…… It all fell apart! I over indulged, fell back into bad habits, got caught up with a busy school term and holidays and and all the other excuses I come up with.

Anyway, I’m back. A terrifying 13stone 9 at 5′ 2″ and heavier than I have ever been in my life, but determined to learn from my mistakes this time. I plan to do 16 weeks of BSD and then go straight to 5;2. To be honest, I don’t know if I will succeed this time and I know it’s foolish to hope for miracles of changed behaviour, but I will try and try.

My husband is very supportive and is currently raiding Tesco for chickpeas, red onion etc. Here goes!

  • Yes, Krysia, the fruit is a big source of carbs. I’ve been trying to stick to one piece a day since starting. But we have kilos and kilos of peaches rotting (no point preserving – just more sugar), pears everywhere, melons bursting open… It seems such a waste. But one piece it is. I had a pear at lunch (weighed it) and it was something like 18.5 g of carbs.

Perseverance is all, I think! Come November and it’s cauliflower and cabbage season, maybe I’ll see some kind of result then!

Anyway, really glad to have you guys there, coming up with suggestions and thinking of me.

Hi all, I’m on a long shift today, and I must admit I’m struggling a bit. This is day 3 for me, and I’ve got quite overtired due to work. Also we are having a kitchen fitted which is keeping me busy !. Anyway, I’ve worked out that when I’m feeling really tired, my mind tricks me into thinking it’s hunger, which when I stop and think about it, is clearly not. There is also boredom mixed into that (I’m at work after all..) so I’m trying to be mindful and keep myself distracted, and drink loads of water. I’m wearing the carpet out at the moment with my frequent trips to the loo !. I had a lovely salad with avocado for lunch, and when I stop, clear my mind and really think about it, I’m not hungry, just peckish. I don’t think I’ve felt real hunger for some time when I think about it, too much topping up !. Whenever I think I may slip, I just cast my mind back to my GP who I almost feel is keeping his watchful eye on me…

Well done on beginning BSd and getting off to a flying start! Also, a good move coming on this forum as there are so many inspirational stories and lots of advice and support
I am on day one, second time round, today! Have lost 2 stone five lbs so far despite being limited in how much exercise i can do
I often feel too full to have 800 cals a day..i dont think it matters short term..i guess in the long run, under 800 cals wdnt be such a great idea every day, but around 800 cals per day more or less and try to stay under 50 g carbs for optimum results. If you are quite a lot under yr 50 g carb some days, don’t feel you have to eat up to 50g tho!
Enjoy r bsd journey and keep us posted on yr progress! X any questions just shout and someone passing by will help!

  • KrysiaD this is really helpful. I was on the keto site Igor shared earlier and thinking my carbs are still way over after reading that. When you say 25 carbs is that net or total?

And yes on the fruit…I’ve been downing berries like they’re free..realized yesterday when I started scrutinizing carbs more that I need to cut my servings to 1/4 cup..guess that’s around 60 ml for volume…been doing berries and greek yogurt for breakfast for years.

Y’all, (I’m from the South) I do feel thinner. Hoping the scale moves tomorrow, but even with my mistakes my body is changing.

  • Hi all,

    I hope it’s OK to join you? I started BSD 800 on 31st August and have lost 13lbs. I started at 22st 11lbs and I’m now 21st 12lbs. Amazing.

I’m 47 years old. I was born with Spina Bifida which gave me a dead bladder and so I have a reflux into my kidneys and liver and I have 3 – 4 kidney infections every year. I also have Psoriatic Arthritis, type 2 Diabetes, Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, Fibromyalgia, Asthma, IBS, adhered bowl, Lymphodeama and a Central Nervous System Disease. Lol Quite a list.

I was always thin until my legs stopped working and I spent 2 years in a wheelchair learning how to walk again, after a fall. Then my weight started piling on.

I lost my Dad in March and since then my sugar levels have been really high, stress and grief and a really intense kidney infection (that wouldn’t go and nearly had me hospitalised!) I think. Today I had my first normal blood glucose reading of 6.1mmol/l after fasting. It’s still not as good as it used to be but I’m very happy to see such a change so quickly. I’m hoping to eventually drop some of my diabetic medication, with my Doctor’s approval of course.

Exercise is impossible for me and so I am being very strict with my food. I’m eating less than 50g carbs each day and sticking to less than 800 calories. I found I entered ketosis quite quickly and now I’m actually struggling to eat all of the food I’m alloted each day.

Is it OK to eat less than you are supposed to?

Thank you for letting me join you and for all your comments on here that have already helped me.

    Annette x

  • Hi Snoop, really good info from mental4ever ‘re: stress – and MM does mention this in his book. Tabletalks point about ‘nibbles here and there’ is good also – and is something that I have been guilty of.
You mentioned that your calories are low compared to your carbs. Several people on these threads have mentioned that they need to keep to 25g of carbs a day to lose weight. I am the same and I wondered if you maybe also. I did wonder that if you added something like walnuts or Brazil nuts to your diet which are very calorie heavy compared to their carbs – in place of some of the fruit that is very calorie light compared to its carbs – you would get the calories you need but be eating much fewer carbs. I do sympathize though as it is very hard for me to restrict the fruit.

  • Thanks sunshinegirl for the clarification! Love zucchini…it’s been a great sub for pasta dishes for me. I cut up a ton and freeze it and whenever I make spaghetti and meatballs for the family I just pull some out and cook it fast to go with the sauce. Easy! I heard someone mention a meat stuffed aubergine (eggplant) a while back that’s on my short list of things to try! Sounds wonderful!

Thanks for the reminder/motivation KrysiaD and eternally optimistic to weigh/measure! Those little things add up big, and that happened to me Sunday when I thought my dessert was a little cheat but so awful when I realized it was over 400 calorie!

Eating out is a killer for me this week too. This is the downside of traveling anywhere….. especially NYC filled with pizza shops, cheesecake, and junk food joints at every street corner. It was crazy last night at The US open with Djokavich having his 2nd game with a retired player. So odd! i never seen that before, especially with Frenchman Tsonga.

I seem to munch and munch when sitting all day watching tennis matches. Atleast it is not munching on pizza and junk food. I hit the champagne bar instead at Ashe Stadium and japanese/korean food nearby.

    Keep it up!

Here is the recipe for flat breads
100 gr (3.5 oz) chick pea flour
40 ml (2fl oz) olive oil
    200 ml (7fl oz) water
add some herbs or lemon zest if you want or even paprika or chilli powder
Mix it to a medium thick batter, not too runny. Oil a pancake pan and make it into 4 pancakes or flatbreads.

WARNING this is 600 calories and 80 carbs for 4 but if you just give him one that is 150 cals and 20 carbs. Still too high for most of us but at least you can use this to replace the normal curry accompaniments of a naan bread and you will be giving him a better source of carbs. For those of you who are looking gob smacked, we are talking about a man who refuses to go ‘on a diet’. It is a step in the right direction. The batter can also be used to make your own onion or better still, spinach, bajhis.

  • Igor, I have it on pre-order with Amazon and expect it any day. Although I love my Kindle I love to browse through a cook book.

Tabletalk, what we call a courgette has the american name zucchini, long green veg a bit like a cucumber. Eggplant is the other name for aubergine, a beautiful purple gem of a veg. Both are fantastic on this diet.

Nebilet, in your second post you mention fruit and veg. Be careful with the fruit as most are full of sugars. You are safe with berries and maybe an occasional apple but do check first and do not eat banana, mango, peaches, cherries, grapes etc check calories as well as carbs. I was surprised that 10 cherry tomatoes had nearly 7 carbs but they are a sweet fruit, not a veg. My garden is full of the little sods and I was eating them like sweeties, that should have told me something.

Another vote for Longley Farm cottage cheese here, it’s a staple in my fridge. Haven’t found anything else comes close.
Often have have half a 250g pot for a quick breakfast or snack when I’m on the run. Must be doing some good as I’m back on track. Weighed in yest 4.5lbs down from my official restart last week. Aiming for 3.5lb/average week loss over this 8wks although that may be a little ambitious- ‘though book does say to aim high!

Yowser, congratulations on your first 8 results and welcome to round 2. I’m finding it easier this time, although I had a few less strict weeks before I restarted fast 800- determined to keep going this time til Christmas

Verano, hope the scales have been kind to you today. I’ve had a week on a couple of occasions when the numbers haven’t budged but then the following week have had a bigger drop than expected. Shame there’s no simple way of measuring weight of body fat daily -that would be far more useful than total bodyweight. Anyway, enjoy your holiday, sometimes it helps to relax a little and just regroup, then come back reinvigorated.

  • Hi guys, thanks for all the thoughts and suggestions. I’ve been weighing everything, each individual ingredient, and measuring olive oil and lemon juice even. I’ve been logging everything in Fat Secret (I wish they’d called it something else). All in all, it’s very odd. The only way I can account for it is that although I’m sticking to the calories, my carbs will be off. I live miles from the shops, so most of the veg I eat we grow. Could mean more sugars than Fat Secret allows for, so maybe I need to knock some calories off. I eat almost no processed food. There is also a lot of fruit about at this time of year, but I’ve tried not to overdo it (hard, as we have some absolutely fantastic melons at the moment). I’ve been drinking plenty of water too. I’ve also been eating fat (had a two-egg omelette with 20 g of Cheddar cooked in 10 g of butter for lunch yesterday, for example). All accounted for in my calories. Had 68 carbs yesterday according to Fat Secret but they have been higher.

Anyway, I know it works. You’re all living proof of that. So, I’ll carry on. Ordinarily I’d be quite happy with 1.6 kg loss in one week, so I’ll run with that. I’m certainly not giving up, as I feel really well.

Krysia, sounds like you and 54 are both seeing eyesight improvements. Fantastic news for you both. I noticed on the BBC website the other day that Michael Mosley has been researching taking supplements to improve vision. Sounds like his own diet is doing a good job already.

I have rebooted this week to and very happy to see a loss of 5 pounds in already
It is hard getting back but am enjoying looking for recipes and the last 2 nights meals went down well with the family too
Keep on keeping on as we will will all see good results

  • Lots of good advice on here. I’ve been doing fine with no hunger on 800 Cal’s but struggling to stick to <50g carbs and the weight loss is slow or just stalled. Upped my exercise 2 days ago and am getting at least one session in of a run, long brisk walk, or hit/circuit training. Trying to add a second daily session of exercise, but no time yesterday. I changed my settings today on mfp to set targets for macros (was just leaving it at default settings). Hopefully this will help me keep on the lookout before I overdo it.

3lbs lost overall. Gained a lb last weekend that I just got back off yesterday. Hoping to move downwards soon!!

Snoop, I’m in the same boat with slow loss, and my pitfall is a nibble here and there that “won’t hurt” and estimating too. I tallied up my nibbles of my kids’ oat cereal yesterday (kept going back in the kitchen and nabbing 2-3 bites of dry cereal throughout the day), and I guessed I had at least 1/2 cup of it which ruined my carb count : ( this may not be an issue for you but I am playing detective for myself and trying to spot the culprit. I’m otherwise staying in the neighborhood of 800 cal (though I’m never much under!) And eating tons of fat/pro. Need to up my water as I tend to neglect that in the afternoons.

Igorasusual, thanks for the link…look forward to understanding that better and getting my macros right.

KrysiaD, that is such amazing and wonderful news about your vision! It’s incredible how quickly our bodies begin to thrive on this diet!

Chookymama, I’m amazed at your activity level! Glad you were rewarded on the scale : )

Keep trucking everyone! The work of making good choices and learning new ways is a success in itself!

Besides eggs and courgette (we call it eggplant! I think I have the right veg in mind) anyone have favorite foods that really work well? I like the menus, but I have been winging it. Been doing salads with turkey, eggs are great any meal, and greek yogurt (no sugar/flavor, sometimes full fat, sometimes no fat) . Have a weakness for peanut butter….hmm….I think I may need to lock that stuff up as I’m tasting it a lot lately (and counting it, but I estimate!)

Today I drove to the coast, about half a hour away, and had a lovely hour-long walk beside the sea (Cronulla, Sydney). And had wom bok as a base for my stir fry instead of rice. I continue to strive for more good days than bad!

Well, ‘week 1 reboot’ going well for the most part…although I did have some bread yesterday which wasn’t on the plan. I find when I’m exhausted/low in mood that’s when I find it hard to resist cravings the most. It feels like a compulsion, and I know that logically I can say no, but emotionally it feels like a huge wave of ‘must have this’ and in a tired state it’s harder to resist….

Need to come up with some strategies for emotional eating as this time round it has been my Achilles heel. Read a piece yesterday about when the negative feelings arise, just sit with them and try and identify what they are, where they are in your body etc and just let them wash over you rather than resisting or trying to make them go away…a bit like meditation I suppose. Will try that next time a binge/eat carbs urge comes up and see. Even waiting 5 mins might be useful.

On positive side, I have done 2 hot yoga classes this week and feel physically better for it – but we did some core work and my stomach is aching today…I have a core like undercooked spaghetti πŸ™‚
