Good morning BSDers and welcome to all newcomers,

Dusdavi, I was ravenously hungry the first week probably because of giving up carbs. Trust me, it gets better quite quickly and the fast weight loss is immediately rewarding…it’s one reason why I choose to weigh everyday.

I use the recipes from the book mostly at weekends. I still have a huge appetite which I assuage with lots of green veggies which I eat with plain grilled meat or fish. Our bbq is under cover so we bbq a lot. Having said that pork with mustard sauce is one of our favourite dishes. I also love stir fries but use a small amount of sesame oil and no sauces.

My husband has found his evening red wine difficult to give up just now so he hasn’t but is still losing weight (neither of us are disbetic, just fat and unhealthy). He eats eggs for breakfast..omelette with mushrooms or ham or cheese, or scrambled with a little bacon. He eats lunch and dinner with me but he doesn’t snack at all whereas I do.

If you like fish, it’s a winner, so filling.

These are just things I’ve found out on the way but in many ways the process reminds me of giving up smoking and I’ve adopted the same coping mechanisms.

Lindarina, I feel your pain…pizza was my favourite food, used to love family pizza nights. You could make something different for you but personally I would change the menu…mexican night with chili con carne or indian night..lightly spiced kebabs etc or home made burger nights! Good luck.

Granny, good luck with the weigh in!

The Long Read from The Guardian is an extract from the Gary Taubes book on sugar.

    Have a good day everyone.

  • I think that the NHS and Big Pharma are getting a hard ride in these fora.

The Newcastle study is the first realistic scale clinical study into this and it is still on-going. Policy should be driven by clinical evidence, not anecdote.

The BSD is hard and it will not suit everyone. It does require willpower and on-going application. We see people come and go from the site and can only assume some of them must have given up. What would the NHS-bashers suggest happen to these people?

The Pharmaceutical industry is a serious of profit driven organisations, but research is wildly expensive and the results far from guaranteed. If they didn’t fund the research who will? We know people don’t vote for increased taxes so it’s not the public sector.

Rant over. Have a good day.

  • Thanks to all for advice on higher bs readings when ill. Just hoping it doesn’t affect my 3 monthly blood averages too much, had been hoping for a stonking result and a meds review. Interesting, though. Hadn’t realised how high readings must have been affecting me previously but I really feel the difference now I know what ‘normal’ is.

Snotty nose and runny eyes have gone but Cough proving hard to shift – ribs sore! – and foolishly went out in cold damp air late yesterday afternoon so will need to take it easy today and minimise stress on body. Going to try some meditation and extra rest, see if that helps!

Well done to everyone reporting such great progress, great to see so many firmly back on track. MKx

  • I use my fitness pal to count calories, and it also counts carbs, fat, salt and protein. I did new atkins last year. This restricts carb grams and I tried to stick to 20g per day. Carbs were counted but not calories. I did lose weight, but not nearly as much as my diet buddy. Unfortunately I had to stop as my cholesterol hit 7.7. New atkins is low carb, high fat and in my opinion didn’t have enough veg for it to be healthy..

I’ve skim read the book but couldn’t find a list of what you can and can’t eat other than the table of foods with gi values. The premise appears to be that you follow calorie counted recipies which generally omit starchy carbs and sugars. I suspect that where there are high gi foods in recipies, these are combined with other foods e.g. Fat and protein which bring the gi and calorie value of the meal within an acceptable limit.

So I’ve taken from this the can eat food list is brightly coloured low gi fruit and veg, lean protein, full fat dairy, nuts, pulses and healthy oil.
The can’t eat list is pasta, white rice, pastry, bread, sweets, cake, beer.
It also says avoid alcohol but a case studiy showed weight loss with whisky. New atkins allowed spirits after the first 2 weeks. Wine, beer and liqueurs have carbs. Some say the Mediterranean diet includes moderate amounts of red wine. I’ll try to hold off on this for as long as possible.

  • DAY 4 … WEEK 2

    Good morning/evening

Another weekend approaching and they are often more difficult for me. I suppose change of routine throws a few of us out and makes mindless eating a little easier. I think I need to re-read the book again for motivation, and the recipe book for inspiration. It’s funny how sometimes you can makes lots of new and interesting meals and at other times you just seem to be repeating the same old same old.

I haven’t tried the kalettes that I bought yet so I may use them for lunch. We are eating Indian tonight but I have that under control now, no starter, chicken tikka with salad and mint and yogurt sauce. Does the trick for me without too many carbs.

Think I’m rambling now! Have a good day.

    Hi team,
    Day six,

I was asked about my attitude to bsd. and my health.etc

I got to explain that, you know when there is an exercise video. And there are a row of fit skinny models. Then ther is the big girl at the back doing the modified version. Well, I am she.
I feel everyone is zooming away with bsd. And I am at the back doing a modified version. A toned down version.

I wish I was in the front line, I would LOVE that.
    But
I am still thankful, I am on the video at all. That I can still do the modified version.
    Something is better than nothing.

So gang, join me on the back row, let’s do what we can, and
    SMILE For the camera.

    Love Lucia

  • Maharani kitten -re: higher bg when ill -my 2 cents is stress – not the anxiety emotion stuff but the illness itself being stressful – I read something about an ICU doc watching all the patients blood sugars (diabetic or not) and treating them w/insulin if elevated – incidence of infection and overall mortality dropped lower than on other units – sounds like he was treating elevated sugars as a symptom ….. interesting stuff – medicine is just beginning to scratch the surface of this. Feel better !!

700g down overnight. Very happy. Farewell mince pie-induced stomach lard.

Another 1.5kg to go until I get down to the lowest BSD weight I have been so far….and only another 25-30kgs after that to goal weight 🙂 Eeeek. (Still going to take it three at a time and plod along slowly. A marathon not a sprint. A marathon not a sprint….)

Margaret – sounds nasty! Hoping you feel better soon. Maybe stay away from any remaining sprouts 🙂

Pat – have a better day. You can do it. Success breeds success – draw on your willpower and it will start to get easier.

I picked up a Xiaomi Mi-Band 2 from Amazon for less than 40 euros. It tells the time, counts steps (and calories burned), measures heart rate, tracks sleep, and gives notifications of SMS, Facebook and Whatsapp. It’s a real bargain for what it does. I’m extremely pleased with it so far, and will be sticking with it until I splash out on an Apple watch for a special occasion!

Davi- I tried this and loved it
Buy a packet of chicken noodle low salt soup
Boil that with 5 sticks of celery chopped up and half a cauliflower and 2 good sized garlic cloves
I know the packet soup is against ‘fresh’ but the whole packet is 85 calories and there’s enough for 3 Big soup bowls and each soup bowl is 60 calories max I reckon
When soup and veg cooked then blitz it and have with some Tobasco or similar if you like the spice
The best 60 calories you can have lol

I haven’t used a recipe yet in the book as I weigh and work out Calories from the internet and the packet etc

2 egg omelette with garlic ginger small tomato mushroom chilli and onion with a sprinkling of cheese is a 275 calorie delight and fills you for about 3 hours , use spray oil.

Tabasco on top is optional lol

I drink 2 litres of carbonated water with lemon or lime in and about a litre of water via peppermint tea or decaf black fresh coffee a aday

My weigh in is Sunday 7th after a week in and I know I’ve shed a lot of water already as my clothes already feel better

    My wife’s the same

Stick with it as it is physically impossible to fail until you give up
As you control whether you give up or not then decide not to give up and it’s a done deal

It’s tough but this forum helps a lot as does reading the whole book

It’s too tough to do without reading the science I reckon

    Roll on Sundays weigh in

Well done for starting and keeping going and not reaching for the bad stuff !!! It’s hard to stay motivated if you feel hungry I know!!!! I also drink too much wine !!
It sounds like you might need more complex carbohydrates as they release energy more slowly , hunger is caused by a trough in your blood sugar causing you to feel empty, headachy, tired and irritable …the aim is to not to have peaks and troughs in your sugar levels……do you think you had enough carbs? Or perhaps too much ? Mostly people in this forum say 50 gms a day although I think one person has 60gms and is still losing weight…..the apple with the porridge have quite a lot of carbs ( try and download a carb /calorie tracker) did you have milk in your coffee ? I was surprised myself when I counted the carbs !!!! The aim really is to feel full with good quality fats, slow energy releasing veg which is low in carbs , and protein …..do you like Full fat Greek Yoghurt ? You can have this with dark berries such as blueberries …do you like eggs you could have two boiled or scrambled with avacado…there are lots of great recipes on this site or you can google ideas for BSD breakfasts ?
Water water and more water is they key I drink 3 litres a day…..sometimes one can mistake thirst for hunger !
I have fizzy water with lime in a wine glass!!!!
I think read MM book thoroughly ‘digest it’ excuse the pun !! Having scales, and a calculator is a must , shop for the week and a meal plan for a week ….having storage boxes to divide your food portions is another good idea.
My hubby is going through exactly what you are ….he works abroad in a demanding stressful job and as I’m not there to shop and plan for him it’s really hard ….he absolutely hates cabbage, celery most forms of egg, most pulses and adores rice, pasta, bread and potatoes so I’m emailing him ideas for meals ….the supermarkets where he is have limited choice as well !!!!!!!!! He can’t afford to be hungry or tired as he needs to decisive and thorough in his job …….so I can tell you I’m on every websites there is looking for ideas !!!!!!🍎🍐🥑🍋🥓🍳🍗🧀🥜🥒🍜
I hope this helps a little ? Keep us posted and don’t hesitate to ask for ideas Alex

    Hi Guys
I am 45yrs, 190cm and on Monday 130.5Kg at the moment not any health issues (apart from the obvious) but basically a ticking time bomb, I drink far too much and my diet is terrible, so here goes..
This is my first stab at the BSD although I have tried many others without much success, this is now day 5 and I have to admit I am feeling hungry most of the time and only willpower getting me through . I am using the Myfitnesspal as a counter but using the recipe book mainly for my meals, the Myfitness app keeps telling me I am not eating enough calories, it says between 1000-1200 for a man???
My biggest downfalls are breakfast cereals, crisps & bread which up to now I have had none of any.
Yesterday I had apple and cinnamon porridge, tuna salad and home made beef kebabs with med veggies, with around 3-4 coffee’s and a lot of water throughout the day, this totalled up to close to 800 cals. No bread, no crisps no ‘junk’ food, I really miss them but trying to stay positive, does this sound like a correct day’s diet?????
Good luck to everyone that is doing this life change and I will keep posting my weekly weights..

  • Hi Renne, whilst Milk is a great source of nutrition ( full fat milk actually has less carbohydrates than skimmed) it is still a liquid therefore you can never feel full or satiated having it as a main source of diet…..,your hunger pangs would still be there ! Successful weight loss cannot occur if Blood glucose spikes and troughs …the trough is the low point when you feel tired , have no energy so you would be more likely to snack possibly not on nutritious foods …..therefore it’s better to have a way of eating that fills you up…..but which is lower in calories and has better complex carbohydrates….yo yo dieting is not healthy . Hope this helps! I lost over two stone on a liquid VLCD to go on a special holiday …I lost inches as well but I never felt full however as I was doing the duet fir a reason it didn’t matter ……..after I got back I gradually slipped back to my old habits and couldn’t maintain the weight loss and here I am again but this time I’m doing it for my health and well being as I can’t stand being fat anymore , not being able to run for a bus or after my dogs or having crunchy discs in my neck and knee………so tomorrow I’m ordering my food but sadly for me no vino ( this is my downfall !!) good luck with what ever you decide hon .

  • Wow JulesMaigret – you are winning! What amazing results and the suit will be gorgeous with your much more svelte frame. Love love 90% Lindt and this new year (round 2) I have decided to have include a square a day as tastes like luxury.

sunshine-girl the dress sounds amazing. How cool to stumble across something so gorgeous. The fact you can wear velvet lycra is awesome as many of us could not, well me anyway, even at my goal weight.

KrysiaD how fun to shock people with your new clothes look! And to be in size 10 – you are my hero.

Mary C, great start and the fun begins. Week by week it is great to see the progress we make. Go well!

Verano you sound strong and you had a good day. Just made a Moroccan cauli soup – cauli is a great filler.

Day 4 for me and feeling a bit weak but at least the headache is gone. Keeping myself busy.

  • sunshine-girl, your poor friend, I feel for her, especially as she’s just lost her mum from diabetic complications so she is grieving and she must be very anxious ….could you get her to this BSD and join the forum……..or suggest to her to read a Prof Taylor’s Diabetic research study from Newcastle university ?
Slimming worlds advice is very outdated now and it’s a purely money making organisation ….keeping people fat and taking away personal choice based on evidence based fact which cannot lie!!!!! These clubs really make me sick and I’m very sceptical about the outcomes they want ….I think the word diet should be erased from our vocabulary and changed to ‘healthy way of life’ a diet suggests short term when in fact it really is for life.

Our government doesn’t give sound advice, nor does it really care that we have a massive obesity epidemic with resulting chronic disease……The NHS throws money at ridiculous so called innovations and the Pharma companies well don’t get me started !!! I would suggest your friend buy a blood glucose monitor to check whether she has raised blood glucose at least she would know , she herself can take control of her health and as she is at of Diabetes the sooner she knows the better….even if the BG is normal she cannot continue the way she is ….that’s why the Very Low Calorie Diets especially the BSD are so good the results are immediate ..visceral fat from around major organs starts to dissipate , you can move more freely , have more energy, feel good about yourself .and this really is what everyone wants ….except the Slimmimg clubs! I’d be happy to advise her…… x

I started on the BSD Monday morning, it’s now Thursday night and the scales haven’t moved 🙁
I’ve been sticking to the 800 calorie count, walking for 45 mins everyday, drinking the water…. don’t know if I’m being too hasty.. but most people report rapid weight loss in the first week.
I am overweight.. 5’3″ and weigh 13 st so would have expected to see a difference… has anyone else ever experienced this?

    Please help!!!

I’ve never had that problem, but then I love cheese and could quite easily eat all 800 calories on a mega cheeseboard if I don’t restrain myself. If I am at the end of the day and haven’t had enough calories then I will ‘pick’ a lump of cheese or a handful of nuts. Could you be bloated rather than stuffed? Has something you’ve eaten disagreed with you?

  • A friend of mine (19.5 stone in weight) has been told by SW that she should only lose 1 to 2 lbs a week to diet safely. Yeah, keeps the money rolling in for them. She is pre-diabetic but her mother died a few months ago from so many diabetic complications (heart, kidneys, stroke) so she is scared but she is listening to these people. What hope for her.

Hi Pete, I started with readings of 190 (10.5) and after about 5 days on the diet it dropped to 7.5, I started to reduce my insulin from 38 units to 36, then 34 and so on. Within 2 weeks I was down to 6.1 and I was getting shaky in the afternoons but instead of doing what I had before, eating something high carb or super sweet, I followed the advice of someone on here and ate 2 prunes and 2 tablespoons of Greek yoghurt and the shakes stopped. After 6 weeks on the diet I was due a HbA1c and found it was down from 8.2 to 6.7.

The diet continued and my morning BG was around 5.5 but in the afternoon it could drop as low as 3.5. I countered this with the prune and yoghurt but was still reducing my insulin by 2 units every 10 or so days. Then I read that glicazides could cause serious lows so I cut one out (I was on 3 in the morning). Since then I don’t seem to get the shakes etc even though my BG can go as low as 4.0 and I don’t even feel afternoon hunger – however, in Summer I exercise strenuously in the afternoon (swimming) in Winter I do my exercise in the morning about 1 hr after breakfast. I am still on 2 glicazide but my insulin is now down to 22 units. I showed my doctor my daily log and asked him ‘considering I often go low in the afternoon which should I reduce, the glicazides or the insulin’. He told me to try to get off the insulin first but if I continue to have lows below 3.8 to cut one of the tablets in half so I am on one and a half.

I know my meds are different and maybe my circumstances but I see you have had a conversation with your doctor and have not had a satisfactory answer. I don’t think your BG is too low at 5.1 (your wife’s don’t compare as she is not diabetic) but I do think they are low for what you are used to and it is scaring you. I too was frightened but I have got used to it and am now very disappointed if I go over 5.0 in the morning and 4.5 in the afternoon. When you start getting lows too often, and I mean under that 3.9 mark, maybe you should at least reduce the Metformin but I am not your doctor and, like him, I am going to err on the side of caution and not tell you what to do. Most people on this diet have stopped taking Metformin once their levels are down. You can always go back if BG rises again.

Oh and you might want to have a small snack just before bed, just a glass of milk or piece of cold meat or cheese, just to ward off the dawn effect which can send your BG high in the morning. By the way my last HbA1c was down to 5.9.

Congratulations on your 6 month BSD anniversary Verano! :–)

I met my first mini goal today. I went to my annual doctor check up and weighed in at 138 lbs. She gave me a chart that showed my weight from 2000 to 2017 (today) and I am 40 lbs down from 2008. She was really proud of me for losing the weight and I told her all about the BSD and how it has also helped me lower my blood sugar levels. This morning my fasting blood sugar was at 91.
I wanted to make sure I told her about the BSD so she might do some research and pass it on to her other patients. She seemed very interested in the diet and it didn’t sound like she has heard of it.

My next long term goal is to lose another 10 lbs. and then go on maintenance but I’m going to have to think a bit about my next mini goal. I need to get my Christmas decorations boxed up and put away so I can move on! I guess that is my most immediate mini goal.

Today, I am going to keep moving.
A little yoga on the bed, a little bit of climbing up the stairs, a little bit of walking like max wall.

Eating, keeping the Carbs down. Keeping an eye on the calories by eating more veg, salad etc.

Mentally, keeping happy. The moon is half full, not half empty. Is it the planet Jupiter we can see next to the moon? What an incredible thing. I have fantastic eye sight. How far can I see, if I can see this planet?

You going to give it a go?

Angela06~ So fun to chase your granddaughter around and get those steps in at the same time.
I love Marzipan! One of my favorites.

PEAK: Went in for my annual check up and met my weight loss goal. I have never been so low on the doctor’s scale since I started seeing her 17 years ago. She was so kind and proud of me for losing the weight! I am down 40 lbs. from my highest back in 2007. Wow! My goal is to lose another 10 lbs and then go into the maintenance phase on the BSD.

PIT: Christmas decorations are all sitting in my dining room and today I have not done anything toward’s boxing them all up. I bought some Valentine decorations on my way to the doctor’s appointment today so hopefully that will encourage me to get the Christmas decorations put away.

I had been looking at the Cambridge diet but it’s too pricey.
What is K’ee diet? Sorry I haven’t heard of it.
I can cook but I have a husband and a family and it would be a lot easier for me to have shakes for 8 weeks, it’s not forever 😎
I couldn’t get my head around meal replacement shakes…. I have looked at the nutritional values including carbs and protein comparing with ordinary milk and I cannot see the difference Between having two or three glasses of skimmed milk a day with a multi vitamin and then the 200 cals in veg for fibre! And paying 3 times as much for a ready made shake? Maybe I am missing something.
I’m not diabetic or pre diabetic but have yo yo dieted for 20 years, I am fat and then thin, I thought this diet Maybe the answer to getting rid of my sugar stores but Im not so sure now ( my dad had type 2 diabetes ) and I’m worried I may take after him
Really appreciate your detailed reply. K 💜

  • Renne- I had great success both on the Cambridge diet and the VLCD K’EE Diet , the latter is cheaper and you can order your shakes/soups/dehydrated meals from their website and they have a great forum and knowledgeable administrator who monitors their Facebook page which is very supportive …….in many ways I found drinking a soup or shake three times a day which was calorie counted and nutritionally balanced very easy……I tweaked it as well as they give you a list of actual fruit and veg that you can eat ….so I would have a shake for breakfast , soup for lunch and a salad for tea, no starchy foods allowed and milk is limited you had to of course drink 2-3 litres of water a day ……no washing up except for the blender stick yeh!!!!! It’s based on achieving ketosis which you measure in your urine with a dip stick. I noticed inches coming off rapidly more than weight initially……after 10 weeks my hubby lost nearly three stone and I lost 2! I’ll never forget the wonderful feeling of zipping up a size 12 skirt!!!!! We unfortunately did put it all back on as we did it for a special holiday….so our mind set was different at the time…all VLCD show very quick results and are very highly motivating but The BSD……. and later on the Mediterranean diet are more sustainable . Good Luck let me know if you need any more information. Lexi x

Only started on Wednesday and every thing going OK. Did six weeks before Christmas by following the plans at the back of the book. This time so many of you say your planning your own meals so today I have made soup but when I calculate the cals and carbs ( which takes a while ) they seem to be higher than in the book. Does everyone do this for their meals or am I missing some easier way of doing it. Help needed please.

Well done HappyGirl1970….. you got through it ! And to lose 6lbs that’s a wonderful result ! Thats why VLCD like this one show results so quickly the ones we need to see to keep us motivated and strong! Just think you’ll be in an Itsy bitsy string bikini by the summer !!!😍👙
I’ve got this Ted Baker floral swishy skirt I’ve had for two years ( 2!!!!!!) and every few months I look at it and just wish ! Now where is the effort in that ! Hope to get into when I go to New York for my birthday in March! I’m determined!
Like you Marion53 I need to keep busy especially at night when the dreaded demon wine stares at me! I’ve booked myself into sewing classes to keep me occupied and plan to sew a kimono !
Claregetsthinner – you’ll lose it probably just time to get into summer dresses ….but you’ll lose a significant amount to make you happier and healthier in 8 weeks !
JulesMaigret – I was a practice Nurse and ran a diabetic clinic and I was so happy when my patients were focused and motivated to lose weight and reverse their diabetes ….many needed empathy to keep going…….some hated it but they were the ones motivated enough to turn their health around! However I’ll never forget a London cabbie an insulin dependent diabetic with very high sugars who wouldn’t stick to a diet he just didn’t care enough …in the end I just gave him a short sharp shock and said he was responsible for people’s lives when he was driving and he was heading seriously for a hyperglycaemic coma possibly at the wheel……..that made him change !
I am so looking forward to starting this on Saturday …..Good Luck everyone !

mixnmatch I can only assume I had a crash. I’ve never seen my levels so low. I am going to check my 2 hour levels again at 9:15 and see what they are. I was amazind i’ve never seen 5.1 in my life. My wife is not diabetic and her 2 hour later blood is 4.8!

Has anyone had this problem? I am struggling to eat the 800 calories as I just don’t have any appetite. I’ve tried forcing the food down, but feel super stuffed.
I’m well hydrated and am quite an active person.

  • Hi sunshine-girl it’s all sounding good. I do think if you take time away from the ‘strict letter of the law of the plan’ if you get straight back to it it works! Obviously is for you!

Maharani and Frog glad you are both on the mend now. Just a matter of time before you’re 109% again.

Busybee that all sounds so positive. Really good results for you and even better that you have a nurse who not only understands but could be encouraging to others as well. The word really is spreading!!!

  • Tea advice please Frog, Jules and Mixnmatch

I would love to move up from a ‘ Lambrusco’ equivalent of tea to something better than PG Tipps! I only have a few cups a day so they might as well be as good as they can be. I like Earl Grey but would love to try a good tea that I can add milk to. I appreciate that this is very much a matter of taste so what would you recommend for a novice?

Hi all, Starting on Monday but reading this forum every day and feeling that maybe, maybe this time I’ll do it. Planning meals and cooking some batches. Keep me out of the kitchen as much as possible. Also dreaming up a complicated crochet project to keep my hands busy and my mind off food. Roll on Monday.

  • It is a matter of choice, but personally I am regarding the whole procedure as an education and have thus changed as little as possible in my diet within the parameters of the science findings. I make almost all meals from scratch, not following recipes etc. I do use For Goodness Shakes occasionally as a convenient ‘meal’ when badminton sessions are at my normal tea time, but apart from that, and the occasional smoothie I am mainly preferring the solid food option. I don’t believe it is part of the remit of the book to suggest shakes, it is available in many different markets after all.
