Hi Julia, a few weeks ago I turned down an easter egg with a longing look after it – now I genuinely could not eat one. Sometimes the sugary smells in chocolatey/cakey aisles actually nauseate me now. My son looked at me a bit oddly the first time I said ‘the smell of sugar in here is a bit nauseating’. ‘how can you smell sugar?’ I don’t know, I never used to, but I can now and I don’t like it.
So, Julia, hang on the same may happen to you π

Hi Mosleyfan it’s strange that you haven’t lost anything in the first 2 weeks.
I know you have experience with dieting so you know yourself that on just 800 calories you HAVE to lose weight.
Like Judith said check your carbs again and make sure you are drinking the correct amount of fluids and getting enough fat in your daily diet
Hopefully this is just a slow body readjustment and this time next week you will be happier. -
Bill, my friend (his partner) is in renal failure (not diabetic in origin) so he has seen the renal wards full of diabetic patients who are blind amputees on dialysis. You would think it would have scared the hell out of him. His answer is always he knows what is best for him…..drrrrr
I think you are right Bill, he is beyond help. How do the medical profession put up with it, it must be so frustrating for them.
Car crash waiting to happen – sums him up. -
Hi BeckyCrew
Yes loads of people have experienced it.
First week your body doesn’t know what has hit it and it will still burn carbs remaining in storage so the weight will go down without any real side effects.
Second week is a different story, the body has run out of carbs and it starts crying out for them as they are so much easier to burn than fat and to your body that is efficiency, hence the cravings (mistaken by many for actual hunger)
By week 3 you should be going in to fat burning mode and your system is working so hard to burn the fat, it doesn’t have time to think about carbs, and that is the point where you will lose interest in them too.
Stick to your guns, you’re almost there. -
Hi Mosleyfan, I’ve been listening to cherrieanne’s advice on watching carbs carefully – could your carb count still be a little high? Or are you eating enough full fat? Drinking 2 to 3 litres of water a day?
You may just lose weight suddenly, hope so, for your sake π -
maybe I will try the 5/2? what do you guys think?
-
Car crash waiting to happen isn’t he ?
I know there are some really gruesome images on the net of limbs affected by diabetic ulcers pre amputation.
Try sticking them in front of him and if that has no effect, I’m afraid he may be beyond help. -
Lynne, that’s a bit hard – only one surgery and no regular GP. It’s worrying that someone teaching at medical school is informing medical students to intervene aggressively with meds! π
Well hat’s off to trouble makers – what other way will changes happen?? π

Hi all… I am interested to see i am not the only one NOT LOSING WEIGHT on strict 800 cals for two weeks now….need to lose 10 -15 kg.
I feel maybe a pair of trousers a little slacker around the hips…no real difference on tape either. This is my first two weeks…depressing. I have never had this problem before. Any ideas please…not diabetic and no sugar addictions always tend to eat mediterranean style last ten years….just dropped out completely, bread biscuits cereals rice pasta cake etc for last two weeks….and no weight drop.
Usually if i just did this alone I would lose a couple of kilos at least….cannot believe on strict 800 not lost an ounce …

Hi Julia
Sorry can’t remember how long you have been on the plan but the carb craving went for me week 3 to 4 and by week 5 I wasn’t even thinking of them.
It will happen for you too. -
Bill, he doesn’t listen to the doctors advice AT ALL! I don’t know how they haven’t strangled him. He still smokes, he will not walk even to the corner shop – he drives. So no exercise, smokes and only gave up Friday night alcohol binges a few years ago when even he knew they were making him ill. Oh and until very recently was eating lots of sugary food, donuts, family sized chocolate bars etc. You can imagine how my friend feels!
-
*waves* to Bill & Judith.
Like you I’ve had some ‘interesting’ conversations with doctors. One told me he believed in ‘early, aggressive intervention’ with diabetics – Metformin, BP meds and statins. Explained I can’t take statins and the only ready I saw for Metformin was I would be able to get free prescriptions (at that time I still paid). He was a locum, who taught at medical school!
Now it seems to be nurses I have these conversations withπ³. Living in a village, there’s the one surgery but no regular GP, mostly staffed by locums.
Most likely a flag on my records – trouble maker. He he.

The more I read on here the more admiration I have for you folks. Bill, Christi and Lynne thanks for the recent posts. They are helpful and informative and can’t be easy to post. I salute all those who take the time to post – it must be a big chunk out of the day.
My weight loss is only 100g this week but I have struggled with less sleep and exam-stressed daughters in recent weeks, not to mention issues with a committee I volunteer to sit on (note to self – give it up) so consider even a tiny loss to be progress regardless of my original hope. At least work is simple ATM.
Best wishes to all for a good weekend – food choices too!
I have been thinking that I still haven’t seen the reduced desire for sweet things others report, with the exception of sugar free fizzy drinks which I now find unbearable. Anyone else similar? I resist 90% of the time but others report a total reduction of desire for them – would love to see that happen to me. Apologies for long and rambling post! -

on 18 Mar 2016 at 11:33 in Welcome to the BSDHi Funkydoofamily
please carry on with the plan.
If you are sticking to 800 calories and that level of carbs you have to lose weight.
It may happen a little slower for you, it does with some folk and the general pattern seems to be no weight loss showing for a time then, overnight, a good loss.
We will all be rooting for you so keep posting and let us know how you get on. -
Sharon WOW – great weight loss – over a stone in THREE weeks! This diet is amazing isn’t it? π It is hard to get your head round full fat foods at first isn’t it?
-
It did come as a bit of a surprise Judith, there’ll be no stopping you now.
Sounds like your friend is toeing the party line and following the old eat low fat and take your meds advice from the doc
As I mentioned elsewhere, it’s amazing the amount of folk who take the docs word as gospel and never question it.
The fact that you can show him both yours and your sons results is worrying, he sounds very dyed in the wool. -
Hi Ali2on,
Are you eating from the Menu Planner? If this is your first week it helps you to get an understanding of what foods you can eat, how to prepare and only when it’s stated in the recipe do you use anything low cal! Fluid intake is essential but Dr Mosley states that if you struggle with water, you can drink no added sugar squash, also included are tea, coffee, etc – if you use skimmed milk this has a higher calorie count than say Almond Milk! Also, he states that if you really have to you can have no added sugar pop and a glass of red wine is acceptable, as it’s based on a Mediterranean diet and red wine is an antioxidant!
Must admit my first week I did not crave anything, second week had a few silly slip-ups! ….but wasn’t hunger just cravings so now using no added sugar Hartley’s jellies and 10 almonds throughout my day for suppressing those cravings!Love the ‘5 glasses + 5 cup’ idea – may use that myself! …thanks SunnyB
Good luck ….we will do this π x

on 18 Mar 2016 at 11:26 in Welcome to the BSDThank you. I’ve averaged 66g of Carb a day according to Myfitnesspal so not way over but can obviously improve. I drink a lot of water….porridge has been good for breakfast so will stick with that and maybe vary things for lunch to find a level. Thanks for the responses!

Hi Lynne, I took all my data sheets with me like I said I would do, my GP was running her finger up and down the charts – she really was interested. All in my notes now!! She has arranged for me to have FSB, thyroid function and cholesterol tests done. I think she is as interested as me in the results.
I think she was in deep shock before I even sat down – she treated me for an infection in early January – and is used to me dragging myself in looking half dead – not bouncing in like Tigger on speed! She is young so only known me for a few years hence she has never seen me the way she saw me today. She could see so much had changed before I said a word.I wonder if the lift in mood to my old self is to do with the new energy – or does this diet do something very fundamental to one’s whole body??
I read your post about suffering with clinical depression, Lynne, life must have been so tough at times for you and yet you give others so much positive support and encouragement. I see you as a friend, someone I know I would get on with if we met. Your weight loss to date is roughly the same as mine. I have now decided I would like to drop another half stone to shift more fat from my belly. I still can’t believe how successful this has been for me – and you – and others. I could hug Professor Taylor and Michael Mosley! π
-
Hi Christi.
No, you don’t get rid of me from here so easily LOL
Glad to hear you’re feeling better about this, and losing again.
It can be hard when we have food around us that would normally have tempted us. Just the other day I was given a big tin of Heroes chocolates – for me and the twins! Not even thought of opening them. Last year the twins left lots of Easter eggs here – finally took them home in October. No, grandma hadn’t touched them – and that was before BSD. It’s not long ago that I couldn’t have chocolate in the house without eating it. Have even been known to wash down several Mars Bars with Diet Coke π±
It’s a great group of folk on here and someone is usually around to help because we’re all over the world in different time zones. For me, posting on here and making myself accountable to everyone is a big help. So thanks everyone.

A plateau is when your weight stays the same even though you have stuck to the diet. It turns out weight loss is not just about simply calories in and calories out or we would all lose weight very rapidly all the time on the bsd 800. Its about much more than that but we don’t really know enough about the ‘much more’ at the moment.
-
Hi all
The same for me I have tried them all, even weight loss tablets, surprise surprise they didn’t work!! I have been on the BSD for three weeks now and lost 16lb and I have tried foods I wouldn’t of even looked at. It took me awhile to get my head around the full fat foods. I am so happy I saw the book on Amazon. Good luck to everyone on this forum with our continued success. X -
Hi captainlynne,
I have just read a few of the posts, I thought you were leaving this group! I’m so pleased I got it wrong and it’s FB you were leaving, I always think you and Bill1954 have such positive attitudes towards this bsd and helping people I enjoy reading the posts as a lot of them mirror my journey to losing weight. I too have lived most of my married life with different forms of depression, I had a complete breakdown 18 months after my 4th child was born, ( post natal) that wasn’t picked up on, I am talking nearly 35 years ago, it just never seemed to completely go away and I battled on, clinical mostly, however now I’m retired I can use my cbt and mindfulness to help keep me on an even keel
On a bsd diet point, I was having problems with not losing and feeling down, Bill posted a positive reply to me, I can now say this week has been so much better, on Tuesday I was giving my gown up daughter a birthday tea, as another daughter was coming with her three girls for tea, so I did her her favourite dessert, sherry and strawberry trifle and a choc mint birthday cake, agony for me as I love them both, well the point I am making is, I did the party tea and didn’t get tempted by either the trifle or the cake, (there is still a couple of slice of cake left in the fridge!) and to top it all I have started losing weight again after a short period where I didn’t lose and even put a bit on, I am now in a better place both physically and mentally so thank you to you and all the other ‘posters’ they all help tremendously. ‘ -
Hi Bre, well done. Please do keep us posted about after your 8 weeks! π
-
My 8 weeks are up today and I am very happy to announce that I have lost 25 pounds in that time and 5 inches from my waist measurement as well as 4 inches off my chest and 3 inches off my hips. Iβve gone down 2-3 dress sizes as well. I had my blood taken this morning and will get the results of my fasting glucose levels and HbA1c on Monday β Iβm really hoping that they have fallen into the normal range.
I plan to carry on eating the same way but not calorie counting for the next two weeks as Iβm on holiday but then I will return to the 8 week plan as I still have 2 stone to loose β ironically, I lost 25lb in 8 weeks and prior to that it took me 18 months to loose the first 28.5lbs that I lost. This is definitely the best diet ever! It is so motivating to loose the weight so quickly and other than the odd day of hunger, a little light-headedness and headache very early on, Iβve felt fab β energised, better concentration and no bloating (no bad period symptoms either which I always had previously).
I would encourage anyone to do this diet, stick with it, even on those hard days or when your weight loss stalls β it will come off, just keep going, the results are great! π
I will keep posting my progress. Thanks, Bre123. -
Hi Bill, it’s amazing isn’t it? I would love to see the day that T2 is eradicated. My friend’s partner is T2 and totally resistant ‘too much effort’ ‘I can’t be bothered’. This is despite having a BSD meal round at my house where he did NOT fall into a diabetic coma. I printed off recipes from the mail and stuck them in a folder. I bought him the book. I made him some flatbreads to have instead of toast….. but no. Too much effort. He ‘knows what works for me’. That explains the diabetic comas then And the beginning of retinopathy. And the nervy tingling in the feet. Some people just will not help themselves π
For all the sensible T2’s this is going to be a miracle!! A proper normal life to look forward to.
My son will be spreading the news as well – he’s seen what it has done for me. He was absolutely amazed at what it has done for you.
π π π so happy
And Bill – me? Me? starting a new thread – what is happening in the world???
-
Hi everyone.
Yes, only diet that’s worked for me and is sustainable.
2.5 stone gone, BMI down from 40.9 to 34.3. Still a long way ( 3.5 to 4 stone) to go, but the journey has started π
-
Thanks for the advice. I took a look at what I was consuming carb wise and it had started to creep up so I’m back to keeping it under 50g per day. I have started losing again, although not at the previous rate but I am glad that I am no longer gaining!
The other thing I’ve noticed is that in the first week I found the diet really easy – no cravings or hunger or anything. But this week I have been struggling with feeling hungry and with craving carbs/chocolate/pastry etc. I have managed to resist but I just wondered if others experienced this, and if so when the cravings start to decrease?
-
Great news π
As we show the professionals our results, surely they must acknowledge that it works! Then it can be rolled out to more patients so more folk can benefit.
Is ‘t it great to be in at the start of all this π
-
Great news Judith
You know, it sounds like the message may just be starting to get through.
Can you imagine the day when T2D is erradicated ?
Now THAT would be what you call a medical breakthrough. -
Hi ON Phone, Mrs Crimbo, vjc, I think we all feel the same!! Only diet which has worked for me. Almost 2 and half stones gone, as my GP said today now a very normal BMI of 22.4. I’m over the moon! π
-
Hi Linda, the odd day at 600 should not be a problem but5 as this is an 8 week diet I would try to get closer to 800 if I were you – that’s just a personal opinion – not a medical or scientific one. If you are up to 900 calories some days and down to 600 some others it should level out π
-
Your story could have been mine π Tried everything/foodie/no snacks but overeat at meals etc
So far, I feel so much more positive than I ever have about this approach and feeling really optimistic about it. Feels great to lose some kilos and anticipate a different way aheadOP
-
Hi folks, roughly three weeks ago I had my asthma review and my asthma nurse was very impressed with my weight loss and well being since I started the BSD. She noted the name of the book and this website to pass the information to diabetic relatives. Today my GP was impressed and wrote down the title of the book so she could buy copies for herself and her mother.
At this rate of interest among the medical profession we may see it getting recommended to patients before too much longer!!!
Happy days!! Lives saved from years of misery!!

Some days my calories are around

Sorry to hear you haven’t had the immediate change you’d hoped for.
Maybe you could check your carb levels on Nutrition Section of My Fitness Pal to see if you’re keeping it to about 50g (from memory I think that’s the recommended level ???)OP

Or my Spiraliser? Or coconut flour? I’ve bought both gram flour and coconut flour but sadly have yet to try them. Keep meaning to make the flatbread. Perhaps later!

Yep she is on Melbourne St, North Adelaide… Natalie Giles… I actually had my appt with her first…. and then found Michaels stuff… amazed me. She spoke openly about what is not known… what is commonly believed and what is still being hotly argued at conferences… gave me gram amount of fats carbs and proteins to aim for…. Most honest and open health professional I have come across for a long time….
In a former life I was a Mental health Nurse Practitioner, Midwife and Emergency Psychiatric assessor on a Mental health Liaison team, worked with loads of amazing Medicos across all disciplines and made some great friends, but she was right up there in my estimation.
-
Thanks everyone for the support!
Weighed in this morning after 4 full days and I’ve lost 2lb. Had hoped for more but better than putting on, and I only have a stone to lose so probably not bad π Also lost 5% body fat, so happy with that.
My average carbs over the last 4 days have been 60, so I should maybe try to get that down a bit to make a difference, although my FBS was in single figures (just) today for the first time in a long time π
Good luck everyone and keep up the good work x

Hi Bre123
Welcome to the over the 8 week club π
Congratulations on your results so far. They’re great. Lots of us are staying on this 8 week plan longer term. I still have another 3.5 – 4 stone to lose so am staying with this, apart from holidays.
Come and join us on the ‘over the 8 week line and after’ thread on this forum, and keep posting your progress.
Enjoy your holiday π

Maybe a bag of gram flour in the suitcase could help solve a couple of problems ?

Yes the weather here has been completely crazy. So hot and humid for weeks. Then overnight it changed. Had to get a jumper out today lol. Have to admit it was a shock last night. Went to bed covered by a sheet (fruitless attempt to keep mossies away), woke up shivering and had to find the quilt in the night.
NSF your endocrinologist sounds like a gem, really up to date with the latest research. Your experience is so different from many people on here who have ignorance or opposition to the diet when they bring the subject up. Great results on your blood sugar results so far π -
Hi Funkydoofamily. The weight loss has to start eventually if you are sticking to the 800 calories and following the rules regarding the types of food you are eating. I found the more water I could drink, the better the weight loss (about 3 litres a day) – it’s tiresome drinking the water but it is a great help and at least the weather is getting a little warmer.
I ate porridge oats or full fat natural yoghurt with seeds for breakfast, a big colourful salad with protein (tuna, prawns, chicken, eggs, feta) for lunch and then a protein and veg based dinner – calorie breakdown 200, 300, 300 approx. as that worked best for my lifestyle. Linseed seeds are also excellent if you suffer with a little constipation – I mixed them with my yoghurt. I record everything I eat, the amount and calories to keep track and I try to plan for the week ahead so I’m prepared for the days ahead.
I’m sure if you keep going the weight will come off – good luck, and let us know how you get on. -

on 18 Mar 2016 at 09:36 in Welcome to the BSDI’ve been on 800 calories a day since Sunday. Been charting everything in my fitness pal app. 2 kids so out and about walking on school run/walk 3x a day. Feeling tired but finding this all easy. But just weighed in and no change π was 14.1 stone and pretty much the same today. What am I doing wrong? I’m carrying on though! need to as Pre-diabetic and have diverticulosis and endometriosis so it will help with all that. Any tips?
