Half way there. End of week 4 and hubby and I have lost eight kgs! My bloods are in the fives now! (Started with a scarey 17!)
Thanks so much Cherrianne, Bill, hashimoto, Shadow, and all for your encouraging examples and words. I feel at my elderly grandma age like I am starting a new life!
Easter will be no problem. We are into coloured eggs not chocolate. And lovely sockeye salmon, although paleo son has bought a huge free range, organic, happy in the service (HA) leg of ham. So good that he is into no carbs too.
(I have asked local greengrocer/deli to see if they can get the Herman Brot bread, Cherrianne (?). Hubby does like his toast in the morning.)
The neuropathy in the toes will take the longest to begin healing, but I am now hopeful.
So Happy Easter all! A time of rebirth!

    Michael:

The book has indeed hit the store shelves here. I picked mine up at Barnes and Noble last week. I have been reading and posting on the forum for a couple of weeks. I have cleaned out my pantry and fridge and have started out with the Mediterranean plan. I like the foods quite well and feel great. I am eating most meals from recipes on the website and in two weeks have lost 7 lbs. I am reading the book now and will begin to transition into the 8 week 800 cal. diet. I have found it useful to begin slowly in this fashion to ease into the full BSD program. The forum and it’s members, who are all wonderfully supportive, have been a great help, and especially handy in the period before I had the book.

thank you for your work and for the website Michael. I am sure the book will be a great success here in the U.S. as word gets out!

    cheers,
    jeff

    Thanks Janet and Trees.

Trees, Happy birthday for Monday. What works for me when eating out? If possible check out the menu options beforehand so you can work out low-carb choices.
Despite what we were taught while growing up, it is ok to leave food on the plate. If a meal arrives with carbs on it, it us ok to leave them. (On holiday the meal came with bread and dumplings, they stayed on the plate. At a set meal earlier this year the Yorkshire pudding stayed on the plate and was used to bury mashed potato under!). If bread is left on the table, make sure it isn’t near you. Avoid dessert!

If you let us know where you’ll be eating out, we may be able yo be more specific.

Hello jpscloud, you sound a lot like me – liking solitude and similar eating pattern problems. A while ago I found a quiz (I think it was on the BBC’s iWonder pages) about what type of eater you are – it seems I am 50% constant craver, 40% emotional eater & 10% feaster. Able to control the eating when with others, but once I was on my own I could hit the fridge and no-one else would know about it! My fridge magnet “fridge pickers wear bigger knickers” did nothing to stop me. Before I started this diet I acquired another fridge magnet – this time it said: “It’s hard to feel as fit as a fiddle when you are shaped like a cello.” That one seems more motivational. My constant craving is relatively under control since being on this diet (admittedly, there have been a couple of bags of crisps and a few custard creams consumed). I haven’t calorie-counted, I’ve preferred to keep an eye on my portions and just cut out the “extras” and try to eat the foods recommended on this diet. Just remember that no-one is a saint and the odd lapse isn’t going to be the end of the world. The important thing is that you regain control and put those food gremlins firmly in their place – you rule, they don’t!
    Good luck, and take care,
    Rose

    Hello

My husband and I are planning to start the diet next week. We are both over weight & I suffer with poly cystic ovary syndrome, which insulin resistance & uncontrolled blood sugar is closely related. My husband also had a routine liver ultrasound before Christmas which showed some fat deposits. Obviously we became concerned & hence came across the BSD. I have read the book, but was just looking for any hints/tips/suggestions which you think would prove useful for the next 8 weeks & beyond. Thank you! 😊

    Hello all.
I have been cycling for years and been diabetic for 13 years. I cycle between 25-35 miles per ride and about 100 miles a week. The only problem was that, in order to complete the ride and feel good, I would have to run my sugars at the high end of normal. To do this, I had a double espresso 10 minutes before setting off, which enabled me to complete the ride without having to fuel up on carbs.
I have been on the BSD for 6 days now and lost 7 pounds. I have also started cycling again and am really struggling with the 800 calories not being enough to fuel my rides. I have stopped the caffeine to bring my sugars up, because the whole point of this system is to reduce your blood sugar to within normal range. I have only completed 2 rides of 12 miles and felt like an old man of 100!! I then did a 20 mile ride fuelled by caffeine and the difference was huge.
I don’t know if I need to perservere with low mileage rides with no caffeine and build up the distances or ope that the rise in blood sugar from caffeine will be negated at the end of a longer ride.
I know conventional wisdom states fuel a ride with carbs, but I want my sugars within normal range. I have also tried the ketogeneic eating plan last year, which worked really well, but I was still relying on caffeine.
Incidentally, I came off my medication after 2 days and am still med free!!!

I had a brunch today – I made an experimental gram flour pancake with 25g gram flour, water and an egg. I had that with 2 Linda McCartney sausages and two grilled tomatoes. It was really nice and I think about 400 calories in total (I fried it in butter).

Dinner will be a large egg salad, with a slice of home made rye bread and butter. I might have some strawberries later as a snack too.

I weigh in on Monday at slimming world… I’ll keep going there for now as it is an independent weigh in and I like catching up with the group. By my scales I’ve lost at least 5lbs since starting the diet.

    Hi Bill
Back from India today and freezing cold!
    Congratulations on becoming a veteran.
I agree with you that junk food is a. modern horror.
Re the historic use of carb foods- yes it’s true, but historically people didn’t have very much, and food shortages were very frequent, so people had ‘ fast days’ forced upon them. I read a book a while ago about the history of food in England – shockingly in medieval times there were really ma lot of famine years. So people weren’t overwhelming their bodies with huge amounts of carbs. They might have been living on porridge and parsnips but the quantities would have been much much less. And the effort involved in getting the food was much more. Of course I mean most people, not the rich.
When I get used to the temperature, I ll let everyone know about india!

    Hi Stringbreaker
Just a reminder that all calories are not equal. Calories from beer will spike your blood sugar which makes you lay down visceral fat round your liver and pancreas and on your belly ( hence beer belly!) – the same number of calories from fat won’t have this effect. They ll stop you getting hungry.
Anyway seems like you’re doing fine!

Oops – I didn’t mean to sound lonely! I have a busy life between work and caring for my very elderly parents, but in any case I’m not much of a socialiser by choice. I like my own company and enjoy solitude – that might seem odd but it’s how I am! I do have friends I can be with as well, but I really do value my own time.

The secret eating is a problem though… the way it works is that I will eat healthy and sensible portions when with company but have always been out of control when eating alone. You’re quite right Cherrianne, it does have control over me but I’m following the fast 800 well on most days and maybe I will be able to wrestle the control back.

Thanks for the support you guys 🙂 I will post on the what have you eaten today thread when I can. I do keep a food diary but I tend to cheat it when I binge… I’m in a state of denial when binging and everything goes out of the window.

On a happier note, my binge was fairly moderate this week and I’m now back in the 800 calorie range so I think between the book and the lovely support here I am getting somewhere.

I had a bit of spare time this morning so tried some more clothes on, I now have a few more trousers that fit again! I had also lost another pound, so am very pleased, I think the not losing has stopped now, my measurements are also down a bit. I must say too that making all these new meals takes ages so I am using more calories just making them! I hope! Off to a very wet Easter vigil at church this evening so being cold and wet will hopefully use a few more calories, I can always live in hope!! I’m not desperate though, just want to run before I can walk.

    Bill,

Time, I think, to feel a little smug. Those are terrific results.
I guess we would all like to lose 30+ lbs, but I bet if someone had asked you when setting out if you would settle for -25.5lbs you’d have jumped at it.
The big thing for most of us is going to be keeping it up – I hope we can all keep going on this thread to give each other moral support in the weeks, months, and even YEARS to come.
Having this group chat is a bit like I imagine “Weight Watchers” to be like – I always imagine it’s the thought of the weekly public weighing-in which keeps folk motivated.
All the very best with your first target of 13.5 by June – do you have a second target?
With regard to your comment on staple diet carbs, could it just be that we’re now able (and only too willing) to eat far too much. The people who were surviving on rice could probably only just about afford enough to live on.
    Small celebration tonight?

    Hi Hashimoto,
A million thanks for your compliment but…..
I am not perfect. I am human.
I try and show on this website the good and especially the bad. Let me explain … if I said yes, 800 calories, no carbs exercise, blah. Blah. Blah, then what am I doing here.

But I have faults, I have been a coach potato, fat etc.
I know the path I am on is not smooth concrete, it is made of cobble stones, I will stumble, or caught my toe, or wobble, but it is my path, I am waddling along, and I will get there, can’t give you a date and time, but know that I have come too far and gained too much to go back.

Yes, I am hungry, ready for my meal, yes I wanted a snack, We all do sometimes, so I work on one cobble at a time, one wobble at a time. Will eat in ten mins, and will enjoy it.

I hope others who hit this same cobble, will find an answer to get past it.

Please note, I do not say I have hit a wall, only caught my toe on a cobble. It’s easier to visualise and get past it.

If I had eaten a snack, I would have acknowledged it, and tried to find a way to fix it for next time.

This time, In having a drink, it eased my need to eat.

Come join me on the journey.

    Love Lucia

    Hi Cherrianne
Thanks for your reply. I always found that Metformin increased my B/G levels. Strange I know. So upon waking this morning my fasting levels where 12. I restarted Metformin and after 2 hours B/G levels up to 19. Having read lots of different stories I realise time is needed to allow the liver to perform differently when on Newcastle 800 diet. I will continue with diet and hope levels will drop as the weight drops. Not sure about the Metformin at this stage. I am due my yearly review end of April and will know how my levels are then. I am not struggling on this diet but I do wonder why levels are so high. Many thanks for any imput. 😊

Hi Lucia – enjoy the chicken, but sit down, look at it, smell it, then eat very, very slowly enjoying to the full each mouthful. The temptation when you feel like that is to start eating ‘bits’ as it comes out the over, and never get away from standing at the oven door. One you finish the lot in a few minutes flat – guess what – you are still hungry and you can hardly remember what you ate!
    Hope tastes good

I admire everyone who is a vegetarian.
I was brought up on a farm so learnt from a very early age where my food comes from.
I am thinking of reducing my meat amounts.
Maybe because I have been talking to the chicken in the oven.
I have had a go at stir fry tofu and found it okay.

    Petition
NHS to encourage the treatment of type 2 diabetes with a low carbohydrate diet.

Professor Taylor has shown that Type 2 diabetes can be reversed using a low carbohydrate, low calorie diet. The NHS has announced it is rolling out a programme to give pre-diabetics lifestyle help. There is no mention of the blood sugar diet which pre-diabetics and diabetics should be following.

    ▼More details

The programme will cost £7 million pounds to run. The dietary advice will be the same as that currently being followed. We have a diabetes epidemic so the old advice is not working.
Dr Maureen Baker, of the Royal College of GPs, welcomed the scheme but she warned “The long-term behaviour changes we need to see is hard to inspire”. However, there are forums for the Blood Sugar Diet which offer the support and inspiration needed which will also ease the burden on GP surgeries.

Your results are amazing, my friend. An inspiration to those joining us.

Good thought about natural carbs v ‘processed muck’. Looking at ingredients lists can read like a science lesson these days (and I failed science at school😢)

Even a well-known store is adding sugar to its meat and poultry. I’ve taken sneaky photos of some of their labels and will respond to their reply when things settle down after the weekend.

I’ll also be emailing my local MP and anyone else I can think of about the petition.

Oh, btw. This week I’ve lost another 3 pounds. Total lost now 39 pounds. Can’t wait to see ‘that’ nurse’s face when I see her in a month to get results of my next HbA1c 😃. Must ask her to tell me the last few results for my personal records!
