  • Hi Igorasusal and Sydneygirl,
Your posts I am hoping are the encouragement I need. I am the same height but weigh about 11,4. I have been exploring paleo for about 12mths and had got down to 10,3 last year. Had a bit of a medical scare which ended up with surgery and some recuperation time. I am so cross with myself as managed to stay in the 10s post surgery without any exercise and then kind of fell into a ‘I’m well, why not eat faze’! As a bit of a post health medical scare reaction my hubby and I are splurging and going on hols to Italy and Greece and I really don’t want to be looking at all those awful ‘did I really look like that’ photos after our hols. I bought the BDS book about a month ago, and just haven’t committed myself to the diet yet. So today is the day as we actually now go in 8 weeks!
Hope your going well with the last 5lbs Igorasusal and I would love to hear how your going Sydneygirl.
    🙂

    Hey Lucia

Am on week 5 now I’m the one who doesn’t weigh or measure .. Me not the food.! It feels like the time has gone so quickly but at the moment I think I’m most grateful to MM for

Feeling like I am in control of the food not the mighty food in control of me I def was a carb and sugar addict

Secondly am going on hols next week and ordered a few clothes online and had to send them back for a smaller size.. Yeh.

Am off to the eye clinic tomorrow for a check up on the op I had for steroid induced glaucoma. I so want them to say it’s ok to have the cataract removed.

Ooh and thirdly the treadmill walking is going good still red faced but as you say the fat is melting in the sweat!!

I am aware of what I’m eating, rather than some auto-pilot carb addiction driven fog.
There’s room in my life for de-cluttering more than my diet – the back sheds are looking fabulous.
It’s really nice NOT to be hungry all of the time.
A renewed love of walking – there’s something about the sun, fresh air and nature that’s wonderful.
    I feel healthier.

    Hi Lucia,
Best wishes for ‘back to work Monday’.

So let me have a couple positive thoughts so far….

    1. Health is better
    2. Black trousers now let me breathe instead of holding my breath for 8 hours
    3. Better frame of mind
    4. Enjoying little things , especially having a bath and my hips don’t cause a dam so the hot water can now go all the way around me.
    5. Able to walk for a few hours
    6. With walking able to enjoy the smell of privit hedges, white flowers blossoming now.
    7. With walking able to listen to birdies singing their heads off
    8. With walking able to enjoy the weather, sun on my face or puddles to splash
    9. Meeting loads of new friends here.
    10. When I ask, does my bum look big in these trousers, it is a question, I no longer know the answer. Previously I knew my blubber made me look big, no, HUGE in the trousers.

    Thank you Michael.

Any one else grateful for BS 800.

    Love Lucia

    Hi GillyD
I finally got around to recreating the Strikes burger with cottage cheese and a peach (well, peach slices, that was all I could find in Sainsbury’s)
It’s actually quite a good combination – I’m not using relish or sauces because of calories and carbs, so the peach is a relatively BSD friendly way or recreating the sweetness and texture of a relish – worth repeating (and there’s five more mini hamburgers sitting in the freezer!)

I had it with french beans, tomatoes and spinach instead of the fries and coleslaw!

Thanks for coming back so quickly. Wow, seems like you are doing really well. Congratulations for a brilliant result.
And I’m interested to hear you RLS seems under control, even thought your calorie intake has gone up. I’ve tried magnesium supplements in the past to no noticeable effect. Also iron. And I do a fair bit of walking, with a couple of dogs. Oh well, perhaps it’s a one off!
Good luck with the future, sounds like you have it nailed.

I second the call for more fat, it does seem to be the secret behind this diet being so enjoyable compared to the rest, as it kills the feelings of hunger. Choose full fat yoghurt to have with berries, cream or milk in your coffee, and full fat cheese for protein, or oily fish, although it seems so alien to most of us who have been told for years it is the villain, it really is key.

If you really can’t face those get to love avocado’s and have lots with your salads. Good luck on your journey, you may find yourself appreciating food a lot more down the line, and wanting to experiment with flavours, that has certainly happened for me.

    Hi Bissell

My RLS seems to have calmed right down, however, I’m on week 16 and have only just entered the healthy BMI bracket this weekend 🍾

I stopped calorie counting last week and so far so good, that said I’ve also started to take magnesium supplements as I also started to get really bad night cramps in my calf muscles…these apparently also work on RLS so maybe they’re helping.

I’m also walking 15 mile every Sunday or going out on the bike. Hopefully it’s a combination of it all but guess I’ll know more in the next few weeks.

I feel the love and good intent Happy 🙂

I’m not too worried because I know the rest of what I eat is good. Friday was a special day and won’t happen often. A day out with the kids and a single ice cream won’t happen often either. Well the days out will happen but not the ice cream!

I’ll be having my roast chicken soon with cauliflower and carrot and I’d rather go a little over calories than miss the nutrients there. It is one of the things I never liked about weight watchers – you could live on chocolate really so long as you didn’t go over target there wasn’t really anything to ensure a healthy diet.

Monday to thursday will be normal 800 BSD and this weekend I stuck to 800 on Saturday as well so only 2 days over.

Hi Jandz 100. I realise you haven’t posted for a while, but I searched ‘restless leg syndrome’ and you came up! 😀
I’ve had this for years and was interested to see how, if at all, it was affected by the diet. I’ve just finished 8 weeks, lost 2 stone and am now officially ‘normal’. All of which is great. I’m now on the second day of 5:2, still low carbs but bigger portions, and my RLS has kicked in with avengence. In retrospect, it never went away but was better.
So I was interested in your experiences. Is it worse/better/the same? Any tips for managing it? I’m on pramiprexole and have been for years.

    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Izzy,
Ignore this if you want but I want to share that for 800 calories a day we have to be very careful to be eating the most nutritious foods and not empty calories. So please be careful how often you are including “treats” as your body needs all the nutrition possible on these few calories.
I have about 23 clients on the program now and several doctors are recommending it as well.
Just be careful as your higher protein and nutrition on this is what keeps you healthy and with a higher metabolism.
Although we could eat 800 cal and 50 carbs of treats those would not maintain our muscles and give us fuel at the best energy type our bodies need.

Said with love for you my friend across the waters. 💜

    I’m wearing a size 12 skirt I haven’t worn in years.

I’m feeling more like my old self. Confident, able, strong!

In other news, I’m hatching a plan… I want to be able to set up my sewing machine and have craft stuff left out.

I might be able to do this by getting a pull down loft ladder and a fold up table that fits in the loft. I floored it about a year after I moved in and although there is some stuff up there it isn’t rammed with stuff. There is no natural light but I could get one of those craft daylight bulbs for up there, and it would be cold in the winter but we have a few electric heaters stashed that we keep for emergencies.

I’m quite handy and I know I can fit the loft ladder myself. I just need to have a look up there and decide if it’s do-able or if I’m kidding myself!

Recently I’m noticing many things about myself. My old survivor self is returning. I feel capable – of many things again whereas I had started to feel less able. I’m finding my brain full of ideas and solutions to things, as well as feeling confident of what I can do, and feeling like I have the energy to do it.

I have books to write, clothes to make and paintings to paint. A garden to sort out as well as my usual work/kids/husband/life.

I’m alive again, in ways I had lost. Growing back into the person I recognise, the person I wanted to be and used to feel like I was. She is different of course – changed by life experience, but no less worthy and no less able to take on the world!

I’m not attributing all of this to BSD, I’m saying I think I am healing from my depression. BSD will have played it’s part in helping me get here though. I know I’m probably not ‘cured’ but I’m getting there and I’m sure there will be days when everything seems unachievable again. I’m human, but I’m on the mend, and that is something to celebrate.

Hey Sciencemonkey it doesn’t really matter how you do this so long as you’re doing what works for you and your partner 🙂 I look forward to hearing your final results!

I had a small tub of ice cream today at the car rally. I could have had a cone and a flake but I thought no. I’m having a small treat and just the ice cream is enough. I’m currently sat at 560 calories for the day and 39g of carbs so I’m by no means a lost cause! Roast chicken and veg for dinner so at worst I won’t be much over. I’m happy I still feel in control. After Friday’s treats and today I know that although I’m allowing extras it is still within limits and not ‘off the wagon’

BSD has taught me to consider what I’m having and how much and how often. Tomorrow is Monday and I will be on 800 for the following 4 days.

I forgot to do that to the granola! But I still haven’t thrown it out either…

    Hi Massie and welcome!

Whilst you don’t need to write down your calories, I would recommend something like MyFitnessPal, which helps you keep a note of what you’re doing. You do need to ensure that you eat ENOUGH calories, also.

If you need to do this BSD, then presumably you’ve got some issues you think could benefit from being sorted, so a bit of organisation will really help.

Hard boiled eggs are good for breakfast. Garden salad (do you mean just greens?) is also ok, but you do need some fat and protein with that, so you probably need meat or cheese with it. And protein and veggies (not the potatoes, or other roots of course) is also fine.

However, if you get MyFitnessPal, you can just enter what you’ve said, and see what calories you’re putting in. And, perhaps most importantly, what carbs. Because if you can keep the carbs under 50g per day (or less – I try to do 20g), then you will see results.

Once you’ve fought through this entry thing once, then you will know what you are doing.

The BSD does NEED fat – this is what fills you up and ISN”T BAD FOR YOU despite what we’ve all been told. So add milk to your coffee, full fat if you like, and add into your cals/carbs for the day.

I honestly would recommend that you get yourself sorted out, just at the start, because it will enable you to carry on and this will bring you success.

    Good luck!

I can’t afford the fibro treatment, and tbh, I’m still not sure what causes it, my rhuematologist says PTSD, other causes given are, leaky gut, and lack of dopamine levels, if the cause could be nailed down, a cure would be found.

Its been a tough week – but on the upside I had no bodies to bury and I didn’t need any bail money 🙂 Seriously though here’s how it went:

    Monday Day 121 weight 9st 11lbs
    Blood Sugar 8.3

Chose Aunties burial plot. She’s not dead – she’s in a Care Home and gave my mum the money for the plot around 5 years ago, but Mum has never got around to it. I’m getting her organised.

    Tuesday Day 122 weight 9st 11lbs
    Blood Sugar 9.3

Paid for Aunties burial plot and got the one behind for myself (I don’t like to think about death, but I feel happier knowing where my body will end up – I took out the 75 year option because I’m planning to live a long healthy life!)

    Wednesday Day 123 weight 9st 11lbs
    Blood Sugar 8.2

Bad day – oldie has been fighting in the Care Home – we are waiting for an emergency meeting with the Mental Health Team – last time we were due an emergency meeting (October 2015) it never happened ! Someone went into his room and they ended up on the floor with him standing over them threatening to stamp on them.

Gave my Mum a shower without either of us coming to blows.

Took my daughter to A & E – she has benign inter cranial hypertension and her eye had swollen up – so we thought her second shunt had failed – thankfully it was only conjunctivitis. Day ended around midnight.

    Thursday Day 124 Weight 9st 12lbs
    blood Sugar 7.4

Visited the crematorium – 30th Anniversary of Dad’s death and voted Leave. Went to bed thinking remain had won.

    Friday Day 125 Weight 9st 11lbs
    Blood Sugar 9.0

Seem to be the only calm one after election result , friends on Facebook are panicking like headless chickens.

Saturday Day 126 Weight 9st 11lbs (End of week 18) I’m taking longer than most
    Blood Sugar 9.0

    Sunday Day 127 Weight 9st 11lbs
    Blood Sugar 9.3

Although things seem to be at a standstill weight and blood sugar at the moment, I seem to be getting more done. My cupboards are looking tidier and I am sorting out a lot of clothes that no longer fit me. Downside is I seem to be getting a lot of migraine-style headaches and stomach pains lately – I might have a chat with my Doctor to see if I need to adjust my Metformin to see if it makes any difference.

Some days are better than others. After 4 weeks I find I don’t crave sweet carbs as much but sometimes craving for salty snacks which is a huge change for me considering I ate a couple of cup cakes and other crap every day! Hubby feels hungry all the time but he has a lot more muscle mass than me and is quite active. Soup, boiled eggs and bean salads keep us both going. Being disabled doesnt help but so far so good.

Just want to expose that I am a) here and b) starting this 8 week program. I have a few challenges.

First I have never been on a “diet” so counting calories feels like writing down all my expenses and I know I start with very good intentions and suddenly unravel. To be honest I don’t care about food. Honestly, it isn’t a thing for me. In the past, living in regimented meal environments (I was in the military) I didn’t have to think about portion control. I ate what was in front of me and it was all fine. I travel for work, so it would be ideal if I had a systemic food program…I am good at regimentation. And I really know I won’t care about it being the ‘same’ everyday. Actually will be a relief to not have to put attention on it. I live alone so don’t have to worry about being tempted by crap lying around.

SO, I want to have a basic plan.
Morning: hard boiled egg(s). (which is fine as I never usually eat breakfast)
lunch: garden salad no dressing (no croutons) maybe some lemon juice
dinner: protein (chicken is usually easy) veggie.

Obviously no desserts or drinks (I don’t drink anyway)

is black coffee ok in the am? I can do without it if it is better.
30 minutes of cardio each day (treadmill is always available) and then some pushups and crunches

    tons and tons of water

is that sounding right? And I eat this everyday? No fasting days now right????

Have just bought The Australian Women’s Weekly “Low Carb” Cookbook. First AWW cookbook I’ve bought for years….used to love them. Much glossier now. The recipes seem to be in the spirit of things although some of the cals look a bit large for an 800 day, and some of the carbs would take you over the 50 that seems to be a popular choice.
BONUS: there is a nutrition panel with each recipe!

Will try a few, always needing to work around OH’s Coeliac Disease, and see how we go,.

    Hi Emma67,
Congratulations on your first big step towards a happier, healthier life! Planning your meals is key to keeping on track. I found that the first week is by far the hardest especially days 3 & 4, but stick with it and every day gets easier as your body adjusts. With this diet the focus is on what you can have rather than what you can’t have. I find that sticking with the recipes in the book means that I am getting the right amount of Fat/Carbs & Cals and therefore don’t crave anything or feel too hungry. So the best advice I would give is to try to stick with the book recipes if you can.
I am now on week 3 and apart from the odd day dream about Salt & Vinegar Crips I do not miss any of the other foods I used to eat.
    Best of luck xx

  • Well done, good to hear the needle keeps moving when you are so close to goal.

I’m the same re exercise, if I don’t do it before breakfast then I find there’s always something getting in the way.

Last month I paid for a video exercise stream, each section is 20 mins long and I want to use it during the BSD at least 3 times a week. Getting up to do it at 7am is my only barrier…

    Hi Izzy,

Well done you on the progress 🙂 I tried various cauliflower pizza recipes and lolow carb pasta or noodles, low carb pastry etc and I have to say I was disappointed by the results and annoyed by how much they cost (either bought or the ingredients to make them). I think that deciding not to make those and to go for new meals with plenty of veg was one reason I managed to stick to the BSD plan (give or take a couple of indulgences with nuts). I’m on the last week and I finish on Thursday and I’ll let you know what the final score is. But I have already discussed it with my better half and we’ll have a small celebration; a glass or two of wine and a nice curry to celebrate. After that we will shift onto a 5:2 based on the BSD; much the same food, but more calories per day and, once or twice a week, some carbs (brown bread, or noodles or couscous etc).

Hope you’re all having a great weekend 🙂

Tomorrow Andy has said he’s going to exercise every day , I’m hoping this will help . We are active in general being builders/ painters so your not always in the mood for more exercise at the end of the day , I am however very hopeful . He has given up so much on this diet , although I always cooked a reasonably healthy meal every day I had no control over his crisp and beer habits . I do keep a 90 – 100 calorie snack handy for emergencies , which does have to be included in the 800

I have just finished reading the 8 week blood sugar diet. I confess my waistline has gotten out of control. My GP described me as abdominally obese…BIG OUCH but true. Reasonably tall but deceiving as much as I may think of myself as a luscious mango I really am an apple on two legs! LOL. Seriously I know it’s not funny. I have a father going blind with type 1 diabetes although he was formerly 2. Not overweight or obese it goes to prove that diabetes does not discriminate although it seems to favour those of us with an ample waistline. I have so far managed to reduce my waist and drop 8kg’s by following a low GI diet but still have a belly that needs to go big time. Not being a huge breakfast fan I feel I could attempt the 800 calorie in 8 weeks plan to help speed up my progress and use myself as a guinea pig to record the results. It appeals to me because it makes sense and because I am motivated and supported by my GP who is allowing me to take responsibility for my health instead of putting me on medication. I am looking forward to support and giving support too as well as BELLY BE GONE!!! Cheers and to all of you on the same journey may your belly disappear and your blood sugar levels drop.

In the old days, the amount of weight I needed to lose was daunting because it would have taken so long. Now, on the BSD, I can see my target drawing closer – the finishing line is in sight. And in less than a year😃

For all those with lots of weight to lose (I started out needing to lose 91 pounds or thereabouts), for other recycled teenagers (I’ve just turned 66), and for the vertically challenged (I’m 5ft 2ins when stretched) this is both possible and sustainable, despite what so many ‘experts’ would (and have) said.

Those who’ve been following my posts know that I was diabetic but now my blood tests come in the normal range and I feel better than in many years.

As I approach the end of this stage of my BSD journey I’ll decide whether to keep going to 9st 7lbs (where the medics say) or settle for a slightly higher weight. It will depend on how I’m looking and feeling. Top of my ‘normal’ BMI is 9st 11lbs. The stubborn part of me wants to be under 10st, but we’ll see.

I’ll be seeing the diabetes nurse on 21st July for annual review. She was seeing me monthly to monitor my progress but stopped that so she’ll not have seen me since 5th May! Despite her earlier support she seems to have changed her opinion despite my results!!! Then an appointment to be made to see GP to get diagnosis of diabetes taken off records. There seems no point in me having all the checks now – save the NHS money.

I recently saw another medical professional who hadn’t seen me since the beginning of the year and she was amazed. Should be seeing her again on Tuesday so there might be an interesting conversation😃

I bought inulin from my health food shop a week ago, firstly, it has not given me the squits, and secondly, I have already lost 2lbs, I sprinkle mine on low fat yogurts. I haven’t had flatulence either, I wonder if that effect is the result of chickpeas?. My mobility is limited due to fibromyalgia, so I cannot attribute the weight loss to exercise, I plan to continue with inulin, it will be interesting to see if there is further weight loss.

Hi Happy, glad you are happy with you new haircut and the new recipe was good! Hope you find some nice new ideas in your magazines and enjoy your day off.

There is a lot of unrest over here now but for the most part I stay out of it, I can understand why people voted on each side which means I can talk easily to both groups. The media will tell you that there is much division and upset and families are split and friendships crumpled. However in my experience the majority of us accept our differences and won’t allow it to divide our families or destroy our friendships. We now need to find our way forwards wherever it ay take us.

The media will also tell you that Scotland wanted to stay in the EU, and it did. However around 40% of people in Scotland still voted to leave so it’s very split here too. It’s all a bit of a mix up at the moment! However I still believe that a good future exists for us. A little perspective is needed I think.

Well done Triumphsprint and wife! Fabulous results, how encouraging is that!

Keep on with the BSD, whilst you will continue losing weight, it may slow down a bit, but your move to a better way of eating will bring all sorts of benefits, including – as you’ve said – additional enjoyment of your food!

I can honestly say that I now sit down to my dinner and enjoy every flavourful mouthful.

Keep posting on here there is lots of advice if you come across any snags or want encouragement – or want to encourage others! Use the search box at the top to find useful posts for anything you need.

PS not too much to lose for me, and not Type 2, but wanting control. In 7 weeks I am now 18lbs down which is more than 12% of my starting body weight. And feeling great. 🙂

I’m happy for it to be slow, because I really do believe that BSD works for me and that I can not only live with it but enjoy it, so if it takes a few months to get to my target that’s fine because I have the (hopefully) years ahead to enjoy it. I’m enjoying the journey 🙂

I made toast with cheese for my son this morning and the smell of toast is still an awesome thing haha, but ya know the smell of toast is better than the taste of toast – or at least that’s what I’ve managed to train myself to remember. However I’m going to get all sorted out soon and go to the shop and see if I can pick up a cauliflower, I saw an article where the person had made cauliflower cheesy toast , using a cauli pizza recipe. Might try it for lunch, with tomato yum yum.

In the afternoon there is a classic car rally in a nearby town so might head along there with the kids as it is a lovely day here today 🙂 Although I will probably complain about it being too hot! Us Scottish people are no use in the heat.

sat here watching my kids play together. There is 7 years between them and they do have their negative moments but on the whole they get on well and adore each other. They are being super cute just now anyway. Well I best go and find some clothes to wear as I’m still in my PJ’s!

my breakfast was a strawberry almond milk shake, dinner is going to be roast chicken.

  • Hi all

Just to say another pound off this morning so 9st 4 or 130lbs – I keep myself motivated by not looking at the fractions of a pound. If it says 9st ‘something’, then I count it as that. And if the next morning it goes up a smidgen, I still count the lower weight. Works for me.

Very stubborn ‘belly wedge’ though! Have some challenging and core-strength-building exercises which I need to get doing…..somehow I can never schedule in the right time to do them. Have either ‘just had something to eat’, ‘just had something to drink’, ‘just have to go and do something else’. How odd is that. Bit like working at home, which is the best way I know to get housework done…..

I was diagnosed with fatty liver and a blood sugar level which classed me as pre diabetic! A freind mention 8 week Blood Sugar Diet and I got the book. Fascinated by its contents, flying in the face of current advice and following both my wife and I reading the book, we decided to give it a go. One week later I have lost 12 and a half pounds and my wife 10 and a half pounds in weight. Currently no feelings of major hunger pangs, food is very tasty and filling.
    Looking forward to week 2!!!!

My husband and I have found digital scales (ours are by Tanita) that calculate BMI, fat percentage, visceral fat, metabolic age, to be useful as they can show body composition changes even if you don’t see much overall weight change on a week – we do a quick weight check daily and once a week the full analysis.
What really helped me lose 10kg (happily I’ve now met my target of ‘below 9st’ in 10 weeks) was sticking to below 800 calories per day, no alcohol, using the recipes in the book only so no ‘cheats’ trying to find substitutes for bread etc that I’ve seen mentioned occasionally in this site, and keeping carbs such as pulses and beans low. Also beware sweeter fruit, we stuck with blueberries, raspberries and lots of apples (Braeburn and Granny Smith).
I am confident that if you stick to the rules it will work for you and it is worth it. Best of luck.

Just back from a week away and have dropped weight have now lost 13kg in my first month – that is 2 stone!! I have a huge amount of weight to lose so probably losing a lot initially because of that but am so pleased. I fluctuated between 800 and 1200 calories per day while I was away and on the odd occasion up to 1400 calories but still lost. Hubby disappointed as he didnt lose any weight. I am delighted with the results so far and I only find it tough if I try to stick to 800 calories every day, so I vary it. It is important to weigh and measure what you are going to eat as the eye is a deceitful scale. Don’t try to guess on your carbs and fats.
