Hi Peterking, not sure if anyone has answered you as there are one or 2 nurse types on, just like me – ex-nurse, long time ago. The word you need is ketones. It is when the body starts to find its energy from muscle fibre, basically eating itself. Now you have the right word you can google it or look it up on any diabetic site. In severe cases you get ketoacidos, which is serious – look it up.

Quote from Diabetes for Dummies = If you go on a strict diet your body burns some of its fat storage and produces ketones in much the same way it burns fat when you lack insulin……. then comes the science bit, ….. Conclusion. A strict diet can produce ketones and these can be released into your urine (you can buy test strips) but this is not the same as the condition which results in ketoacidosis.

You see, even nurses get confused, and get in a panic when they don’t really know what they are talking about. One is a serious condition the other is the natural process of losing weight. By the way, if you have ever wondered where fat goes, when you diet it is broken down into smaller molecules and is expelled in your urine, which is why a good diet make you pee more.

Jill, I can’t think in kilos either, this is purely for the psychological aspect of it ๐Ÿ˜€ Especially now that (I suspect!) weight loss is going to be slowing down to 1 or 2 lbs a week – still not to be sniffed at – but after such big losses in the first month, it’s going to be a bit disheartening. So, I’m going to switch off and just concentrate on the scale going down (hopefully!) in small increments. As long as it goes down, that’s all that matters. A quick google search can convert the amounts in seconds anyway, if I really need to know ๐Ÿ˜‰

Absolutely you can do it! I don’t think I would have stuck to it without this forum, this thread has kept me sane, talked me down, geed me on and given me some of the best giggles I have had in ages! This thread is generally open between 5 am (apart from today grrrrrrrrr) and 11 pm ๐Ÿ˜‰ You too can join us in a pot of hurrah, and tut at wilted kale. Squint drunkenly at Timmy in his speedos. Just remember to keep your chickpeas chunky, and leave your sanity at the door ๐Ÿ˜‰

Lucy – all fantastically helpful and encouraging thanks so much. Started at 12st 13lbs (sorry just can’t think in kilos even though I hear what you say about better loss tracking) and hope to get rid of a stone in the 4 weeks I plan to do it – then do another 4 weeks in a month or so (not eating differently in between but not calorie counting). I would like to get to 10 stone, that is my goal – but with such great support here I am sure it can be done, so thanks to you and all the lovely people who take time out of their day to support us. I really do think it is the greatest thing about this diet and why it works – they should market you as part of it!

    Hi
Day 5 and back on track. Yesterday emotionally was fine, a couple of sad thoughts but a good day really. Did not keep to it, knew I wouldn’t. a latte coffee and half a slice of millionaires shortbread, friend bought and wanted to share. Lunch late was ploughmans with cheese, ham and hock. Had 2 slices of home made bread, some butter and a little pickle. For drink I had sparkling water with a slice of lemon and another coffee. Then indulged in a large slice of coffee and walnut cake yummy. Had yoghurt with fresh blueberries last night. Oh forgot had some tesco make jelly babies third of a pack.
Today have had two coffees with a bit of milk and yoghurt with fresh blueberries. Have been to pre diabetic clinic where was weighed but not too bad, blood pressure all right. She was pleased I was taking it seriously and said to carry on. Had a thought spiralising courgettes and carrots should be ok I hope. So having veg soup for lunch and will try courgette spaghetti with a tomato and pepper mixture to top. Hope that will be good. Thanks everyone Mary

Bloody hell! Do you all wait until I’m not here to interact? Pfffffffffffft.

So, Timmy, basically you were posing in the changing rooms, correct? ๐Ÿ˜‰ Haha, I had the same reaction re the almond flour, he nearly cried handing over his debit card, and ours wasn’t so bad as we had buy one get one half price (I was in every day that week taking advantage of that offer, I tell you!).

Hi Jill, welcome. Come in, come in… Everyone is doing this plan differently to what works for them. I’ve not counted one carb daily, but I do look at carb counts. I’m just following the plan according to what I’m allowed to eat, and the amount of calories I can eat in a day. It’s working – for me – so far. When it stops working, well, then I’ll have to start looking at the amount of carbs. I’ve so much weight to lose anyway, that it’s going to take time. If I was nearer goal? Then the carb count would probably bother me. But I’m nowhere near.

I lost 14lb in my first week, 4 in my second, 3 in my third and 4 in my fourth. One off this week so far. I weigh again on Saturday at the end week 5/start of week 6. Everyone is different though and it will depend on many factors, including how big you were to start off with too. Personally, I am different to the other ladies, I weigh daily. I haven’t always but I have for the last two eating plans I have been on. It keeps me on track too. So if it’s right for you, don’t worry about it. One thing you might want to consider (what I’m doing on Saturday) is changing your scales to kilos. You’ll see the weight come down in smaller increments but as I said before, I could have three days at a certain weight and my scale won’t show a change until I’ve lost the whole pound. I could be 15 11 and three quarters, 15 11 and a half and 15 11 and a quarter on those three days, losing half a pound, but my scales won’t show me that. If that makes sense!

    Hi Jillf,
I’m now in week 13 and have lost 19.8kg and have just hit a ‘normal’ BMI after starting off ‘obese’. Still 5.1kg to lose till my goal weight of 65kg, not that I’m counting. Much! Heck, who am I kidding! I count everything!

I’ve kept track of everything I’ve eaten in my EasyDietDiary app and on looking back, I’ve logged somewhere between 40-70g per day of both total fats (as opposed to just saturated) and protein. On rare days I went either a bit over or under, but generally between 40 & 70g.

My biggest weight loss in a week was 4.6kg and the lowest was 0.4kg, but on most weeks, seems to be around 1.5kg per week.
I hope this helps, any questions, just ask, we are all here to help.๐Ÿ˜€
    Cheers

    Hi all,

I’ve not been on here for a while – any comments to my post are gratefully received but I just wanted to share with you my recent experience.

So diagnosed with T2 after 1st child birth 5 years ago – had second child 2 years ago – after loosing 4stone on my own then doing to 800 cal diet, loosing half a stone but now also maintaining this (I now naturally eat about 900/1,000 calories thanks to the diet) and i’m about half a stone off my ideal weight, my BS’s are still high (morning one can be 12, if eat nothing and exercise i can get it to 6!)

So someone (Bill i think it was you) suggested a c-peptide test, paid for that, showed me to have 23mmol insulin which i gather is pretty low. Took it to my doctor, she didn’t have a clue – hospital team rolled their eyes at me when I said I was on this diet. Decided to not be beaten!

Researched and went to see a Functional Practitioner – they are medically trained and often ex NHS consultants or GPs, but they look at your nutrition and lifestyle too, i sat with her for 2 hours and received a report which confirmed what I thought is that I have an auto immune disease (probably developed around university) and now pre type 1 diabetes triggered by having my kids and insulin resistant. Yes it costs money but it’s worth it. She asked me when I suggested this to the diabetic clinic and my GP why they didn’t take me seriously? Because they said, I hasn’t passed out due to lack of insulin, therefore i couldn’t possibly be T1. She was horrified.

So there is a long way to go, I need to have a food intolerance test and perform an exclusion diet (not looking forward to it being a veggie!) as well as a full vitamin test so we can see how we can turn my immune system back on again through a food first approach.

BUT there are things that I should have been tested for by the GP which I’m trying to not get angry about (OK I did, but lets move on!) such as an anti-bodies test, ceoliac and thyroid tests – PLUS I’ve taken myself off the combined pill – to me this is low hanging fruit which could have helped me manage my diabetes earlier – however, it’s done now and I’m seeing i as part of my journey i just wanted to share this with you incase it inspires anyone else to make sure they know what medication they are taking or (and i know alot of people can’t) if you can afford to see a Functional Practitioner I would recommend it!

Lastly, if i hadn’t have over heard a snippet of radio 2 interview with Dr Michael Mosley, I wouldn’t have found this diet when i did and be in the position i am now – so thank you.

    Have a great day
    Charlie

Hi Jillf, welcome onboard this slightly crazy train of conversation! To reiterate what Tokyo says above, don’t weigh daily or you’ll just stress yourself. Go with how you feel and how your clothes fit. And on week 2 you’re doing well anyway.. one more week and the liver and pancreas are cleared of carbs and your waist will really shrink! I have never counted carbs as such, just gone with eliminating the really obvious ones (spuds, rice, pasta, bread, cakes, sweets) totally. There’s not much left after that!

Timmy.. woo hoo on the trunks (I also checked them out!). If you’re wearing them you must be looking good already ๐Ÿ˜€
Almond flour is very expensive (although better value on http://www.realfoodstore.co.uk for a lot of the bank breaking healthy alternatives) so I am experimenting with combining or replacing it with our old friend gram (chickpea) flour or coconut flour (which is a lot cheaper). Apparently with gram flour you should add a little oil to offset its dryness compared to the almond stuff.

Don’t remind me about the fart bread.. I’m dreading lunch ๐Ÿ™

On Wednesdays, our family gets together for pizza night. I had already decided that I was going to use this day as my “cheat day” since for me, missing out on spending that time together seemed unrealistic. Also, if this is to become a lifestyle change, and not just a diet, then I need to be flexible (in a totally rigid way, ๐Ÿ˜› ). So yesterday was my first test and one really interesting consequence, that I hadn’t even considered, was the fact that my stomach shrunk! So, after 1 slice of pizza, some fruit, and a beer, I was SO FULL! Normally, I can down at least 3-4 slices, fruit, coffee, beer, and whatever other snacks might be put out. So this was a real pleasant surprise for me.

However, today, I am noticing that the lightheadedness, tiredness, and irritability, that I felt during my first few days has returned. I was diagnosed with pre diabetes, so for me at least, it’s not just about the calories. I can feel the difference today. So, I’m torn. It was great that I still lost weight this morning on the scale, and it’s great that I was physically unable to eat as much as I did before, but the jury is still out on whether or not this is something that won’t actually hurt me in the long run. ยฏ\_(ใƒ„)_/ยฏ

First – after the great loss of 6lbs or more in the first week I am loosing around half a pound a day now – was that your experience?
My other question was – I know I am keeping to under 50g of carbs but is there a ‘recommended’ level of fat and protein?
Thanks so much for your advice – you keep me going in the dark moments!

Hi BigP, from my rudimentary knowledge your meal plan looks spot on. Especially given that you are doing cardio. The danger in doing cardio is that your body can go into a catabolic state which means that your body may look to your muscle mass as a fuel source, rather than that pesky fat.

Eating carbs pre workout is a good way to prevent this, so you are spot on there. I would be tempted to chuck a boiled/poached egg into your breakfast too. Your body will need essential amino acids (“usable” protein) post work out to help repair/build lean muscle mass (and more lean muscle mass means faster metabolism). From memory eggs have more usable protein than any other food source, something like 28g of usable protein per 30g of protein.

I know what you mean about adding the calories. Only thing I would say to that is if you are adding more, add it protein and good fats. Also, it’s not all about the weight, but the removal of fat. Don’t forget lean muscle is twice as dense as fat, so your weight could stay the same, or even go up, but your body fat could go down too!

Hi Halicarnassus, I haven’t read those books but I’m aware of the findings in them. I personally wouldn’t ever want to give up eating meat for good, although I have found that my land based animal protein consumption has reduced quite a lot on this diet (apart from the juicy steak I had last night!), whilst my consumption of oily fish has gone up.

But that’s a conscious choice I’ve made. One thing I have done is give up all processed meat, with the exception of bacon/sausages but then I only get those from a local farmer who uses the traditional method of curing the pork (i.e. with salt and not nitrites).

If you really want to go down the non animal protein route, then you can get what you need from plant based foods, but the temptation can be to fill up with starchy carbs as your choices are more limited. There is a very good extract in Holfords optimum nutrition book which details how to combine foods (an in your case plant based foods) to make sure that you are getting enough of the essential amino acids for muscle repair. And that is the key to it. Lots of food have “protein” in them, but unless that protein is made up for the 8 essential amino acids then they aren’t any good for the body.

The older I get the more I realise that everything comes down to a balance and moderation. The Chinese don’t drink milk, but they do eat beef/chicken/fish/pork. But the probably limit their consumption compared with Western cultures. Weightlifters look healthy, but cardio wise they are screwed. Cardio freak will have great hearts and veins, but their bone density and joints will suffer.

So my approach is to base most of my food around naturally growing vegetables and wholegrains, with a bit of organic meat/eggs (I have my own chickens) and fish. Red meat I normally restrict to once or twice a week (saying that I’m definitely having it twice this week, lol). Same with exercise. I do a mixture of running, swimming, cycling and weights and I’m about to start pilates too.

    Hi Everyone,

Thanks for all the responses, it’s given me a lot of food for thought (pardon the pun), and also congratulations to all at whatever stage you are at.

To give a better insight to how i currently tailor my meals on a workout day I’ll run through a typical meal plan:

Pre workout – Porridge (oatmeal) – 220kcal – I have this around 5am and start my workout at 6am
Breakfast – Yoghurt, berries, peanut butter – 175kcal – post workout around 8am
Lunch – Brocolli and Tuna (or Chicken) – 155kcal
Dinner – Cottage cheese, Chicken (or tuna), tomato, spring onion – 250kcal

Before starting at the gym i never had the porridge and would add calories in the other meals, but from the reading I’ve done your body needs the carbs for the workout to get you going. To be fair I always burn off that amount of calories on the cross trainer, so the hope is the rest of the workout starts using fat stores in my body.

If i’m being totally honest the hardest part about adding more calories on a regular basis is mental. I’m not sure how others feel, but for me the the control aspect of the diet, coupled with the rapid results, are addictive. There is an inherent fear that by adding calories the weight loss will stop, or at the worst increase, and being so close to a healthy BMI makes this even more daunting.

The realist in me understands that even at say 1200 calories a day (on work out days) my weight will still drop, but really convincing myself of it is another matter.

It’s a non workout day today and generally I don’t get very hungry outside my regular meals, so I’ll take some more time to think about what I’ll do next, and if anyone can add more insight I’ll be happy to take it on board.

OMFG. So I slightly overdid my front crawl sprints in the pool last night and dragged myself out of the pool feeling like I was going to throw up.

Got home and needed something substantial to eat. Holy sh&* balls! I tried the steak with peppercorn and creme fraiche sauce from the BSD book. I’m not kidding when I say it is probably the nicest meal I have ever eaten/cooked.

I had it with steamed broccoli instead of salad and I also added in two thinly sliced chestnut mushrooms to the frying pan. My steak was a bit smaller than the one in the recipe which made the meal about 550 cals, but DAMN it was worth it.

If you can save up your cals for a big meal in the evening then this is well worth it. I’m cooking it again either tonight or tomorrow! (got 2 steaks in a pack from Aldi so then need eating!).

Wooooooooop well done Tokyo! You little star! And see, the sun even came out to say well done ๐Ÿ˜Š you’ll have that last kilo in no time, you watch!

House is chaos, three late kids running around like headless chickens, and hubby is a git for not putting alarm on. I feel daft now you know when you wake with a start? Coffee…

    Hi Saloh
Wow really impressed by your running. Only think I can manage a small trot! Think will shift your weight pretty quickly but you do initially hit a bit of a wall. My Diabetic nurse suggested eating a banana…but that is not a very good option on BSD so nuts would be good. Anyway when I went to a cardio class I kept forgetting and now I have lost more weight I don’t seem to run out of energy in the same way. I’m sure you will need to work out what feels right for you.

    Hi Californiagirl
I really envy your skinny waist. I keep hoping for the Jessica Ennis torso but i can only manage slightly flabby bulge!
I certainly think that exercise is really important and I also think you need to mix it up a bit. The 3 S’s.
    Strength, suppleness and stamina.
Ie: something weight bearing/ lifting….could be a Body pump class, the Gym or swimming.
something to stretch your joints …like Yoga, Pilates or the Gym
something to increase your heart/lung rate……anything cardio that has some intensity in a short burst…HIT

Note to self. Need to work on my waist more.
Off to a spin class this morning and as I haven’t been for weeks the Instructor will know that the red and puffing pensioner on the bike at the back is not putting up the resistance too high.

Hopefully she will smile indulgently to herself and note that I am wearing jazzy leggings !!!!

Oh verano, I did the same thing only worse! I bought my boys big bars of choc and they were sitting in the fridge. I had some of each (so that I was fair!) and then decided I had blown it so may as well have a carb day! So ate toast and finished it off with a bowl of crunchy nut cornflakes. I thought I would be able to get straight back to BSD when I got back from my hols, but clearly needed to re-engage my head! I soooo want to lose this weight.
So today is a new day. I’m not going to beat myself up, just get back on that horse.
