Just got back from my appointment with the nurse for my diabetic check. She opened up the computer and said ‘oh the blood tests are back and they’re ok’ – I was disappointed at such a mediocre response. Then she peered closer as she opened up another page and said ‘oh they’re not ok they’re brilliant!’ . Last July they were 80 mml and now they’re 44 mml (don’t really know what that means but obviously good) – my average BS is down from 9.5 last year to 6.2 – my weight is 95kg to 75kg. She sat back and said ‘so how have you done it’ – then gave me a high 5! I wanted to cry with joy!

So I told her…….she has done the 5:2 and together with one of the doctors in the practice has read the research about reversing diabetes and was really interested. She was talking about the possibility of my speaking to some other type 2’ers to encourage them and was so positive about it. She couldn’t have been lovelier, more positive and impressed – it was one of the best moments I can remember.

Now am seeing the doctor on Friday to ask if I can reduce my meds……………..fingers crossed! Just want to celebrate with fish and chips – no!! really not – just joking ha ha ha

Brilliant Tallyhoo and about the same response that I got from my GP
Isn’t it great to have a surgery with an open mind rather than the “!by the book” attitude we here about from loads of posters.
Congratulations, hope the doc stops your meds altogether or at least reduces them

Congratulations Bill – that is amazing news. I would love to hear how you go with your Doctor. Went to my Doctor today about leg cramps. Of course, she checked my blood pressure and it was 100/60. I showed her my daily records and it is jumping around between 120/80 and 100/60. She said it was great but did not mention reducing my medication. I am due for another round of blood work in about 6 weeks so I am going to ask her about reducing all of my meds then.

I went for my bloods this morning, and the diabetes “specialist” nurse told me (authoritatively) that the problem with a high fat diet is the body converts it to glucose……………

It would be funny if it wasn’t so damn scary!

    Indoctrination is very scary.

I’m a newly diagnosed type 2 and am not great when it comes to taking any meds. Told the nurse that I was going to manage it with diet and she was really happy about it and said it was nice to have someone motivated to try and change things themselves. She wasn’t convinced that this is a reversible condition though – I will prove her wrong.

Hi tree-peony, I think it’s so sad how blinkered some of the medical profession are and you must have been so frustrated and disappointed – just have to prove her wrong then!

Hi the polly, – yes you will do!

I was so incandescent, I didn’t actually say anything. Mind you, this is the same practice where I was told not to low carb 4 years ago….

Following up from my first post on this topic……….

Had my appointment with the doc today following up on diabetic check during the week. He was absolutely delighted with the results (see first post of this topic) and I told him I’d dropped half of my metformin. He said that’s fine – then I said I wanted to drop all my metformin. He said ok – don’t have a problem with that BUT I want you to redo these blood tests in 4 months – I said that’s fine! Bearing in mind that this is an average of the last 3 months and I’d been doing the diet for 4 months when I had these tests – I’m quietly confident that they’ll be good. He did say not to be surprised if they go up a bit but that I was not to check them – he said if it goes up to 7.8 or something – doesn’t matter as long as it keeps coming down to 5.5/5.7 but not to keep doing it and get paranoid – interesting! He also said that at 6.2 I had ‘taken myself out of diabetes’!!!!! His words. He said at 6.5-7.5 they do advise people they may want to consider medication and at 7.6 they say you have to but at 6.2 – you’re not in the diabetic range!!! Wow Wow Wow

I also asked about my cholesterol result which – drum roll please – is down to 3.5 – now I checked the other day and normal is 4 – 6 and he was dead impressed with that too. I said I now wanted to come off the statin for cholesterol which he was less in favour of as he said they are a great drug regardless of diabetes – great preventative for strokes and heart attacks – I still said, no I wanna come off! So he said fine – we’ll check that also in 4 months time – fantastic

He also said – wait for it – don’t lose too much weight!! Ha ha ha ha ha – never EVER expected anyone to say those words to me – lovely jubbly

I came home and had a ceremonial dumping of the medication in the bin………………what a day!!

So………….believe it everyone – and spread the word

Hi Alan……………I just went through and checked mine. I’m not very good at keeping records so they’re a bit erratic I’m afraid!

Week 1 – fasting started at a fantastic 10 and then went down to 9 later that week
before dinner 8.8 then 2 hours after also 8.8
    Week 2 – fasting 9.6 – didn’t record any others that week
    Week 3 – fasting 6.6 2 hours after lunch 6.7
    Week 4 – fasting 7.1
    Week 5 – fasting 5.4
    Week 6 – fasting 5.6 pre lunch 5.7 – post 5.4

I have had one reading at 4.9 before a meal otherwise mine have pretty much stabilised at 5.5 ish and they won’t seem to drop below that. I think it was Bill (or someone) who said don’t worry too much about the fasting ones as they are erratic, the ones to watch with interest are the difference between before a meal and 2 hours after as that’s showing how your body actually copes with food ie if there’s a massive difference and a spike still 2 hours after or not.

Don’t forget, with my readings above I was still taking my full metformin dose – get that fasting one of 10 then – the week before I started it was actually 10.6 – I remember that scared me!

Hi tree-peony – thought I’d mention something which EdwinaB raised on a different topic – check out dietdoctor.com and google a guy called Jason Fung – really interesting – watch the video……………they’ve known about this type of eating in Sweden for years and have been promoting it – why are we so behind here??

Now in half dose 1000 daily but not other single pill whatever it’s called
It’s the after lunch reAding I want to reduce they range from 7 to 8.5 but may reduce now back on meds
    Thanks Alan

Yes – I wondered too – don’t really get it but that’s what he said – I guess the next readings in 4 months time will be really telling – also another reason to be really strict with myself as I want to prove to him it’s possible to stay where I am without the meds

How many of use have been looking for the miracle for weight loss and reducing blood glucose. You follow all the traditional rules and nothing works. I have tried low carb before but that just meant no bread, I have tried Atkins, WW, Slimming World (both those have some good recipes), grapefruit diet, honey and water, you name it. When I came across this diet I was sceptical but thought ‘okay I’ll try anything once’ never expecting such dramatic results in such a short time. Wow wow wow, this has changed my life and will be my life from now on. I get my blood done in about 5 weeks and looking forward to seeing the doctor instead of dreading it.

What wonderful news everyone has shared. Congratulations to ALL of you! My news is also good, especially considering that I have not been following the diet very faithfully…and most times not at all. I went on the diet for about three weeks during which I was quite faithful. I did lose weight – about 5 kg., but not as much as others had reported, so I was a bit down about it. Fell off the wagon, so to speak, and for awhile actually went a bit crazy on chocolate. Noticed that I didn’t feel as well – tired, sores on foot acting up again, etc. Modified my diet back towards the diet, but not completely…Gained back a couple of kilograms…then came the dreaded blood test again! It kind of caught me by surprise, but when I went to the doctor, my blood sugar levels were in the normal range and I was still 3 kgs lighter than the last time I had seen the doctor! I’m not on any medication…I was just on the “watch” list, but now I am just fine. I’m so happy and have drastically cut down on the sugar and carbs. Realize that I will have to do that forever…but it is worth it in the long run. I need to be happy and healthy and energetic more than I need those extra pieces of chocolate!
