Hi Happy πŸ™‚ I was thinking of you earlier so it’s lovely that you were able to get on and post! Your stats are brilliant and you could set yourself up as a BSD consultant as well by the sound of it lol. Your clients are very lucky to have your support beyond their original reasons for seeing you!

I’ve had a mostly chilled day with my son, his sister has been out most of the day and Daddy at work. I’ve caught up on the laundry and we ventured out to buy a new toy as a reward (it’s a struggle getting the boy to poo appropriately) I’m wearing my taken in top- which could have done with being taken in a bit more too, and my modified shrug πŸ™‚ I really like my new sleeves! I was thinking I might add a band of the same lace to the bottom of my top. Might be quite funky… I have so many things I want to do and so little time lol. Ah well I will get there and at least I can never be bored when the kids are in bed.

I did make pancakes for breakfast, and I’ve been modifying the recipe over time – I’ve posted it in recipes as it is now perfect for me.
Lunch I fried up some courgetti with bacon, garlic, tomatoes and peas – a bit random I know but the fridge was running low!
Then I was very very naughty – I ate a banana!
Cauli pizza is off the menu as I haven’t got everything I need, hubby is having some chicken thing and I’m going for courgetti again this time with beans and onions and tomato sauce. Gotta go finish sorting dinner πŸ™‚ then we’re going to watch some more Game of Thrones.

    Hi Autumn,
Just post! There are a lot of people who have gone through the programme and it will be surprising if others have not had a similar experience or something that you can relate to. It is a fantastic forum, full of a lot of knowledge and people happy to help and share.
Good luck – looking forward to your next post!

Thankyou for the advice re warfarin, I am aware of that info as I have a medical profession also. I started on the 29 July and have lost 23 lbs with no side effects, other than delight, at the departure of my insatiable appetite. I wish you both well.

Thank you Yowzer πŸ™‚ Well, as for the weather, it’s Wales we’re talking about so I won’t be holding my breath… Try and remain strong, the more situations you can come out of without cheating, the easier you’ll find it the next time. I’ve survived a Sunday Dinner at my parents, where I had no roasties, no yorkies and no mashed potato. I ate everything else and took my own mashed cauli – potato substitute. Everyone else had a lovely homemade dessert, we had greek yogurt and berries. I sat with a black coffee watching my sister in law eat the world’s biggest steak baguette. I’ve only got eating out and camping to get under my belt now and I can take on the world! Greggs… I will be having a Festive Bake at Christmas though, whether or not.

Tuna and boiled eggs yes, and hummus possibly, I’ve only tried it once and that was this week, it was ok, nice, jury is still out at the moment. Prynhawn da, Bissel! Diolch am y syniadau dda! Fabulous results.
Here’s hoping more and more of us come off that wretched diabetic register.
We are marching forward…….hopefully in a lighter and more sprightly manner…..so to speak.
We can also manage skipping, hopping and Samba as well! (Actually have no idea about Samba …but we could easily try!)

Gawd I haven’t got as far as the packing stage, I’m *this* stressed out at the ‘paper’ stage! This is a mere list! Great call on the avocados! They’re nice and filling, and they would be great for a lunch, just make sure there’s a sharp knife in with our picnic stuff. Orrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! I could even try the frozen ones! πŸ˜‰ And the smoked salmon, that’s what I’m having for tea tonight, peppered smoked salmon salad, it’s nice too, just nicked a tiny piece. Hubby is making the salad now, that’s one of his jobs (as well as stirring the pans ) πŸ˜‰ and he can say he’s made tea four times this week now lol. We’ve got a cracking massive coolbox that keeps things frozen for up to 5 days depending on how often you go in and out of it, plus there’s a little supermarket within about a mile that has a good range of salad and meat, there’s a butchers on site, because it’s a farm shop so they have nice steaks and homemade burgers, and all the major supermarkets are within about 10 miles too. Two days after we get there, the car boot sale we got the double yolker eggs from is on, that’s only about 10 miles away too, so we’re going to go and stock up on those, can’t go wrong with an omelette for breakfast or for a quick lunch. I would be bouncing excited about it only for the food thing. Breakfast isn’t an issue, nor is tea, but it’s just the going out for the day, where we could usually pop in a bakery or take some sandwiches, the last thing I really want to be doing is assembling bloody salad at 8 in the morning on a camping table.

Hi Igorasusual, I am catching up with a few weeks of replies :-(.
Saw this yesterday and was really pleased to see the practice looking at this so positively. If you read the whole BSD book you may remember MM’s description of the change to ulcer treatment that he did a programme on in the early 2000’s. It showed that many ulcers are caused by bacteria and treatable with antibiotics. I remembered the programme when he wrote about it, what I had not known was that after it was aired, the GMC had denounced it and it took 2 years to get it accepted. It was mainly through people going to their doctor and demanding antibiotics, being given them (probably just to shut them up) and then the GP’s realising it was working that the GMC changed their tune! People power can work!
    Keep up the good work.

HappyLife – I’ve not taken BP meds for many months since it went really low. But they’ve only just taken them off the computer!

sunshine-girl. I’ve lost 5.5 stone (77 pounds or 34.9 kg). I know about fat feet – I’ve already had to dispose of a pair of shoes that were too big now (and my favourite pair of fitflops😱). Hope I’ll be able to boots for the winter that go higher than my ankles! Not been able to do that for many a long year because of my fat calves😱

  • Hi Igorasusual,
that is a great result from your holidays! I do recognise with the mirrors and the worry that it will all come back on. It has taken me quite a few weeks to adjust to the new profile in the mirror – actually looking in the mirror is a big achievement, I used to manage to walk past them all without looking in them!
I was getting measured for a new bra a week or so ago and was in my idea of a horror chamber – two mirrors positioned so you could see your front and back view simultaneously. I struggled to look and realised, it was ok and also that I still had some weight to lose. Having got to the goal of 80kg (I am 173cm) and 3 dress sizes down I was feeling good. I had assumed I would stop at 75kg – normal BMI. The two mirrors made me see what I now was, and not just that there was a bit difference from before.
So – the new target I have now set is a final goal of 70kg. That is 7kg over my weight in my 20’s and 30’s so not an unrealistic maintenance weight.
Having taken 6 weeks off when I was on holiday and away from home a lot, I put l little back on, but it came off and ketosis set back in within 5 days of restarting 800. I knew I would have put some weight back on and logically I knew it could not be much as my clothes still fitted, but I would not step on the scales in case I found it had all gone back on!
The last few weeks I have been away at weekends, carefully eating, but not too restrictive, so more 4:3 or 3:4 and still losing 0.5-1kg a week. I have also added in a 14 hour fast – that is as much as I can do, I eat breakfast at 8am and have my last meal between 5 and 6pm. After that it is water or redbush tea. I think that helped get back to fat burning quickly, it has also brought my FBS down to low 4’s, but that is not surprising given the body ahs 14 hours to process the foods instead of 10 hours.
So, like you I am on the final stint. Today I weighed in and I am 21.6kg down – about 3.3 stone. 7.2 kg to go which I hope to have lost by the end of August latest. I’ll keep to the 800 for that period so with a bit of luck and exercise, I might get there a bit quicker!
Good luck with your final few weeks.

I went for a weekend on about week 5 I think, and found avocados good to have because you can just eat them like a spoon and an instant meal almost! Kind of stopped me thinking I was missing out too as they are so tasty. We brought rashers too but didn’t cook them – also smoked salmon was kind of useful. OO and dont forget the water! I brought bottles of sparkling water and kept one around all the time. It’s good as no kitchen or fridge to find delights in either! πŸ˜‰

Hi there, don’t think I have published my blood glucose results. I take my test every morning before breakfast. I always have a small (healthy) snack just before bed so have not eaten for around 9 hours. I started off at 190 (HBA1c 10.5) and I am now down to 104 or 5.7 this morning. I have been lower but that is not my aim as I want to avoid hypos. I have reduced my insulin from 37 units each evening to 28. I have also reduced my diamicron from 3 tablets each morning to 2.

I think my body has settled at a good level and hopefully I will be able to reduce insulin further as it levels out. Two years ago I was using 24 units and everything went to hell after following the recommendations of a nutritionist who added carbs into every meal, told me to cut down on protein (even though I only ate 1 portion per day). The result was 5 kg weight gain and bloods running at over 200 (HBA1c 11). That is what led me to find this diet.

I couldn’t be happier and don’t care if I never see another plate of rice or potatoes. But, there is a box of wine already opened that has been sat there for nearly 4 weeks. If it goes sour I will just have to use it as white wine vinegar.

Hi Yowzer, welcome πŸ™‚ Great weight loss, doesn’t matter what it was, water or fat – it’s gone now πŸ™‚ I am a pastry addict, a whiff of Greggs can reduce me to tears. It is easy as long as you know what you’re eating in advance, I’ve found it’s when you don’t it’s dangerous. I’m currently trying to plan a camping trip and I am at my wits end and could strangle my husband when he said ‘I’d like to stick to the calories but it would be easier to have a bap with my bacon in the morning’… give me strength!

I start week 7 tomorrow and I have lost 29 lbs and my husband 24 lbs. I’ve still got a long, long way to go, so I am going to do it for as long as I need to/can and then switch to 5:2. I like this way of eating, there’s very little I’m missing to the point of craving it and I’m managing fine on 800 calories. If I find that changes, I’ll increase the calories slightly but still keep within the remit of what’s ‘legal’. Which is probably what is going to happen while I’m camping… πŸ˜‰

Hi everyone and happy BSDing! I am on day 10 after being inspired to give it a go after a pal lost 31 lb in 8 weeks of BSD!
I lost 12 lb in my first week, mainly water i know, but soooo encouraging!
Also pleasantly surprised that apart from the first day i havent craved bread etc though i am sure i am (was) addicted to anything from a bakery!
It seems this diet is not as difficult as it may look at first glance!
My question is :- is anybody doing this for 24 weeks? Or did i imagine i read somewhere that it can be done for 24 weeks!
Thanks for reading and have a good weekend! X

Hi Lynne, don’t know how much weight you have lost (too many posts to read) but a common cause of height loss is getting rid of the fat pads on your feet. Yes you can have fat feet, I have shoes that don’t fit (at the moment). I have all my tests done on 8th August and will see my doctor on the 10th with my results. Can’t wait to see what good this has done.

Hi Pulp. there is no level set in the book, but this forum early on found settled on the 50g level as one that most non-veggies were losing weight on. I am vegetarian not vegan, and found 50g to be very challenging and I was getting leg cramps that did not go away.
I settled on 60g a day aiming to get 40-45g protein from veg, pulses, nuts, seeds, dairy and some soya. I lost nearly 16kg in 10 weeks and the first 2 weeks I used Shakes (without realising they were high carb) and had 100-120 a day! There was someone else who was eating 80g carbs a day and was getting his FBS down from diabetic easily.
For a vegan diet, I would try 60-70g a day as a starter. The carbs you are eating are all slow release so will not cause BS spikes which is what MM is trying to get us away from. I recently read a Rose Elliot book that covered how to do an Atkins diet for veggies (I would not recommend it) but she had a comment about how to count carbs – using net carbs which are carbs minus the fibre. This actually lowers the carb value of pulses etc. I have wondered if that is why I was losing 2kg a week on 60g carbs as a good proportion were seeds and pulses, so all high fibre. It is an interesting possibility, but gets far too complex to maintain that level of food monitoring! I just stick to the higher carbs level.
Hope that helps and good luck. There are a few forums that the non-meat eaters have started that may be of interest to you as well.
The main thing is to follow the foods that he says to avoid, aim for around 800 cals and adjust weekly as you get settled into the diet. Plan a few days ahead using that approach and see what the carbs are coming up to.

  • Sensible advice from Orchid, Julie. Keep the faith it does seem various people respond in different ways and you just have to go with it.

    Re a sweet treat, can I also recommend 6 baby plum tomatoes eaten really s l o w l y. MFP says 16 cals, 2.5 carbs.

There are quite a few veggie recipies, but not vegan. Anyone know what Michael classes as ‘low carb’ in grams? I’m concerned that the amount of legumes, pulses, soya yoghurt and tofu I will substitute will be far from low carb.

    Hi Autumn,
Like you I am vegetarian and yes, it is harder as a vegetarian to get to the low carb limits some people do as we need the pulses which are carb high – but these are not bad refined carbs, they are good ones!
I started at a BMI of 33 and a self diagnosis of ‘about to be’ pre-diabetic’ when I took my FBS with a blood sugar monitor. It was a shock, and I got started on this within a week. I had two initial goals (I started 1 Feb 16); one was to get my blood sugars down, the second to get my weight down so I was not classified as obese. My blood sugars were down within 4 weeks and my BMI was under 30 in 5.5 weeks. I did 10 weeks of the 800, then have had a break and been doing 4:3 or 3:4 with a few weeks of 800 depending on where I am and what is going on. I am now 20 kilos lighter, my FBS is down at 4 – 4.5 and I should be getting into normal BMI in a week or so – I am also 3-4 dress sizes down.
I did not get the ‘carb flu’ (sounds like what you are experiencing) that you hear people talking about when I started the 800 as I started using Shakes for 3 of the meals and one meal of veggies or soup. This was close to the Newcastle approach to the diet, but without the help of their Shakes which are high protein as you cannot get over the counter in the UK. The ones I took turned out to be high carbs so I was on 100g carb or higher for the first two weeks! I was losing weight (steadily) and not inches off of my waist. I asked the forum and was advised to look at my carb intake. I then went onto my own meals, but after doing some digging on info, decided to aim for 60g a day carbs as this allowed me to balance my diet with enough good veg carbs to get 40-45g protein a day. I also found I was getting dizzy and had severe leg cramps overnight if I dropped below 50g a day carbs.
You may find you are better to increase the carbs to 60g for a few weeks to see how it goes and if you feel you need to cut further the go down slowly to 40g. The key is to remember we still need our 5 a day and 40-45g protein a day so you need enough cheese, full fat dairy, pulses, tofu etc to get that. The revelation is eating FF yogurt and cheese again – and yes a lot of eggs.
Hope this helps = happy to chat more if you want more detail.

    FRIDAY 22 July

OMG! I felt so alive today! 10:00 Am and on my way to Opening Day at Saratoga Raceway and CASINO. No, I am not alive today from the raceway park. IT IS FROM MY START AGAIN ON PANCHAKARMA< AYURVEDIC INDIAN medicine.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PG1TakLZCio

A video to watch above on it. It may look crazy getting herbal remedies massaged in skin and steam baths. But, it beats any other way of getting rid of toxins in your body and extra fat. 6,000+ years of Ayurveda Medicine.

    I feel so alive because:

    Mucus gone in nasal passage
    skin is smooth
    digesting much much better
    less hunger pains
hair is smooth silky and shiny like a diamond ring

It is worth every penny doing this once a week. Maybe I should do it 2-3 times….. but gets costly.

My Ayuveda Doctor said keep it up on your Kryptonite: Dairy and cheeses. Cheese and Ice Cream: My Kryptonite. What is your KRYPTONITE? Chocolate and sugar I can live without. But not dairy foods. GREAT TO HAVE A DOCTOR SUPERVISION ON THIS STUFF. Yes, they are doctor, just like accupunturists.

I never used Indian medicine before moving there 5 years ago to Pune, India. I was healthy then. And then life changing experiences came and made me gain 80 pounds in the past 5 years when moved back to Jersey Shore. Time for a change. That is why we all are
    here today.

CHANGE IS GOOD! KEEP IT UP!

Up to you if naturalist doctors are a good ingredient for your health success. I love it and find it worth every penny.

Hi Autumn, I’m now on week 21 but felt quite ill for the first 2 or 3 weeks. No energy, tired, aches, etc. I put it down to my body adjusting to a lot less food. I even couldn’t keep up with my 3 miles walking each night as I felt so worn out. This did improve though. I found upping my protein helped with the lack of energy. Keep at it, it’s still early days and it will get easier.

  • Hi Julie13,
Don’t panic. Some weeks are better than others, and if you are in the UK just now and in the heat-wave zone, you may just be retaining fluid! The body is designed to retain fluids as the heat goes up and not let them go until the temp drops for a few days! I always put on a kilo or so when the heat goes up suddenly – for me in Herts it went up 10 degrees in 2 days! Once it comes down a little, the fluid goes in a day and my weight drops!
I am also a comfort eater and yes, there have been some days that I have had a coffee and cake when out. I have avoided having cake in the house, so it is never more than one slice when I am out. Other than that I find a couple of pieces frozen fruit (eg rasps) defrosted with a tablespoon greek yogurt & cinnamon is a help when I ‘need’ something sweet. I also take cocoa twice a day – no milk or sugar only hot water and 5g cocoa powder (I use Green and Blacks Organic) and it is 17 cals per cup, 1g carb, 1g protein, 1g fat. I started taking this over a year ago, long before this plan started, when there was talk of it helping with dementia. Without milk, it was an acquired taste, but I now really like it and it does give me a chocolate fix during the day and does fit in with the long term goal for a Mediterranean diet. I rarely if ever go for chocolate now when I am out.
In terms of what is likely to be the 800 – If you were disproportionately more around the waist than you used to be, and you find your waist has gone down more than the rest of you, that is likely to be the 800. In the past I have found I lost proportionately over my body, but this time, I was almost like a tube not an hourglass and the first changes were weight loss around my waist as I was losing the visceral fat there faster than elsewhere.
As you say – you are not hungry, yet you will be eating a very balanced diet – what’s bad about that! Keep going…. and have a great weekend!

Also, are you doing much exercise?

Hi everyone! I’m hoping to get some advice. I’m almost done with my 2nd week, and aside from one day that I went over by 150 kcal, I’ve been consistently between 750-850 kcal/day. My problem is I’m feeling very weak, and more than a little faint. Moving around seems like such a monumental task, and climbing the stairs to my apartment (4th floor) is soul draining. I’ve been reading all the lovely posts of folks who feel awesome on this diet. People have even said that they have *more* energy…but I’m really struggling!

A typical day is looks like this: 250 kcal for breakfast, 200-250 kcal for lunch, 300 kcal for dinner, and a coffee mid afternoon. I’m a vegetarian, so it’s been rough getting my carbs low enough (although eggs are my best friends just now), although I’m usually around 35-50% carbs. I’m also drinking about 2L of water a day not including my coffee or tea. Does anything jump out at anyone? Any ideas on what I may be doing wrong?

Even though I’ve already lost +8 lbs, I’m just really getting discouraged. Maybe this just won’t work for me πŸ˜”
Any help or suggestions would be *greatly appreciated*! I really don’t want to stop the incredible weight loss.

I try to drink several ordinary sized glasses of water each day, usually between three and five of them. Despite criticism of the value of drinking plain water, I’ve found that three glasses of water (drunk over about half an hour or so) help settle heartburn. I try not to eat a heavy meal in the evening, and try to eat before 7pm to leave time for dinner to digest. I take two spoonfuls of liquid Gaviscon before bed if I need to. I no longer take anti-reflux medication. I try and relax my stomach to help my digestion. The other thing is to deliberately eat more slowly.

    Hey Izzy!!!
I’ve been reading your posts in my email but haven’t had time to get on with clients and launching website items this week. I will get on at least once a week I hope. So happy about your new uniform and your taken in top!! Yeah!!! I am so proud of you my friend!

M&S is a definite life saver for me. Bought my lunch there today. Sainsburys also do some good low carb meals (salads, bean salads, etc).

Haven’t actually eaten out yet but will be doing so for the first time tomorrow. Going for a curry. I’m just going to ditch the rice and opt for popadoms instead (which are normally made from lentil flour or gram flour). Most French and Italian restaurants (proper Italian ones, not cheapy chain ones) should be ok to avoid the carbs in too.

Lynne, fantastic job – you are amazing! So happy you also are off your BP meds and even if they don’t know your blood sugar will stay low, YOU DO!! And that’s really all that matters for now. Some day they will absorb all the miraculous changes and understand it’s the real deal and you have manifested a new healthy (and permanent) life for yourself. It takes the medical community years to come around (even my doctor said that this week albeit she’s now telling her clients about BSD because of me).
Re being shorter – ugh – I went from 5.6 years ago to 5.4 a while back and so did my husband! It’s just gravity pulling us down it seems. Ha.
You are a shining star always to all of us in here with you and as always I thank you for your ongoing and kind inspiration!!

if you eat fish Michaelmas then Pret a Manger’s nicois salad has been a life saver for me. I think they also do “protein pots” with avocado and boiled eggs? Them and m&s as Orchid says are my go-to places if I am trying to find something on the go.

But I have now taken to bringing my own hard boiled eggs with me if I am going to be anywhere new with work in case I can’t find anything for lunch.

It’s amazing once you start looking for low-carb lunches, how carb saturated all the normal lunch options are!
