Hi folks, lovely to read all your amazing results and stories on these forums, they really helped me to get motivated.
I’m on day 4 now and although I’m starting to feel a HELL of a lot less bloated and I know I’m loosing weight, the cravings this aft have been off the scale! I know why, but it’s not easy to loose ’em is it?
I had scrambled egg this morning with a rasher of bacon and mushrooms/spring onion chopped in. Yum! I took a bottle of water out with a measured amount of almonds and other nuts in case I got peckish. I went out to do lots of ‘new school year’ shopping with the kids and on route I had the misfortune to go into Home Bargains, which if you haven’t got one local, is like a Poundland or quality Save…. Great for stuff like washing powder and toothpaste. Apart from the obvious aisles of sweets, the entire shop is kitted out in SUGAR. Its like someone has taken my blinkers off.At one point I was just staring and could have cried when my son came running over with a “family pack” of Maom (sugar & colouring) . I just thought, this isn’t fair you know!? It’s not cricket! I’ve felt a bit angry the rest of the day ….which in turn has turned on the comfort eating alert part of my brain. I understand we all make our own decisions on what we put in our mouths but these shops have super sized bags of everything at very low prices wall to wall. In weeks gone by I would’ve allowed myself and my son a ‘treat’ but now (and I guess this is a positive) I see it as the enemy.
Oh and re the cravings, I haven’t given in (yey!) I went on to have the chickpea soup from the book and salmon for dinner BUT if you have any tips for that “end of day-almost out of calories-God help me before I eat an entire loaf Of bread and butter-lifesaver” I’d be super grateful!x. Thanks and may the force be with you all on your weight loss and health restoring lifestyle changes xx

Can you keep going with 800 calories a day until you reach your goal? I didn’t notice him stating that in the book…is it healthy as well?
Hi…I’m a newcomer on day one…and I know it’s going to take more than 8 weeks to reach it!
Good for you for finishing 8 of them!

    Hi Trelawny and ladies

Sorry I didn’t reply before, I lost the thread … box ticked now πŸ˜€ It’s funny that we’re all about the same height and weight πŸ™‚ Well done Trelawny on your fab weight loss – that’s fantastic. Mine’s a bit slower, so I’m at 13st 2 at the moment but I’ll take it!

Lunch today was salmon teriyaki on skewers with a salad and dinner was ratatouille with feta and cauli rice – yum! Though I could eat it all over again.
I agree with Frog Wendy that My Fat Secret is by far the best app for tracking as recommended by Frog – it makes tracking everything so easy – but I haven’t found a UK website only a UK app – Frog do you have a link?

I’m so determined that this time is going to be the last time that I diet as I am so fed up of gaining and losing weight. I’m hoping that the BSD will sort out my liver, pancreas, cholesterol and diabetes permanently.

Trelawny, I’m not sure if you’ve seen the video on http://www.dietdoctor.com on fasting with Jason Fung – it was reading some stuff from him that made me decide to do 16:8. I guess I won’t know if it sorts out my metabolism properly until we’re done, but there is some really good stuff on the site about it.

To sajhdr: If you eat the banana with a little nut butter (which is delicious!) it won’t affect your blood sugar as much. You can lower the glycemic response of foods by eating protein, fat, fiber, or vinegar with them. Hope that helps.

    enjoy the film!
I don’t think the water content is a ‘rip off’ necessarily – just the natural water content of the meat plus some gravy. Dried food (presumably the whiskas and go cat type) is around 10% but I think the hills dry food and similar specialised diet stuff is more moist than that. Muji, my cat before Froglet, had Hills for many years but she had kidney problems from when she was about 13 – so I’m very concerned that Froglet does get adequate hydration.

    Hi Verano

Waitrose’ website says 7.4g oer 100g on their dried red lentils
It states “Typical values as prepared This pack provides 12 servings” – so from a dry weight pack of 500g, that is 7.4g of carb per 42g of dry weight – so equates back to around the 17g figure that you have from FatSecret
Sounds like an occasional but not every day – although perfectly feasible to build into under 50g of carbs – I think that’s about the same as a gram flour pancake.

I remember a similar conversation on another thread, not about lentils, but another pulse, a few weeks ago.

Great news on the tops – you’ll get there withthe last one!
In my BHS bonanza last week (7 plain T shirts at Β£1 each!) I had a range of sizes 1 18, several 16s and a coulple of 14s -they all fit, although the 14s are a bit ‘wear with loos-ish trousers and remember to hold my stomach in’ for now

I was a bit confused on fruit myself, so did some research on the glycemic load of various fruits. Was not able to find them all– glycemic load studies are limited– but I included the ones that have been studied. This is based on standard serving sizes of each. In order of how much they raise your blood sugar, from best to worst (leaving me unclear as to why apples are said to be okay in Dr. Mosley’s book, but not melon, grapes, etc. Really, though, compared to grains, no fruits are bad, especially in moderation (i.e., not a whole bowlful of fruit salad, or at least blunt the blood sugar response with some nuts or cheese or something).

    berries
    apricot
    grapefruit
    plum
    kiwi
    cantaloupe
    peach
    grapes
    pineapple
    watermelon
    pear
    mango
    orange
    apple
    banana

I do a lot of catsitting for various friends, love it.
Yes we too worry Ziggy doesnt drink enough..he’s been drinking more tho on his special food coz i guess its moresolid, less watery than his usual felix..which he still loves to have occasionally..its a rip off tho isnt it if its that much water! But its pretty cheap too
Waitrose do some nice terrines..zig doesnt like the fish ones but likes the poultry.
I always have sticks for him in my bag..he knows it and rummages in my bag when i arrive..makes me feel like a proper granma! πŸ˜ƒπŸ˜ƒ
Right.. time to get my togs on and go to see a film that comes highly recommended by my froggy friend! X

  • I think part of the answer with lentils is the difference between cooked weight and dry weight. If I cooked 100g of dry lentils it would make a mountain of cooked so we would never eat that much. The recipe I have for my dip is 100g dried but I think as a small serving it would make about 10 servings, so only 6g of carb. All this science, think I need a lie down.

    Hey Verano

Sorry about the top … I can’t help with that πŸ™‚ but I think you are probably alright with your lentils… According to Google net carbs on 100g of lentils is 12g per 100g (20g – 8g fibre) https://g.co/kgs/JOadtO

I’m not really counting carbs too much as I figure 800 cals is hard enough as it is but am just choosing to avoid anything starchy… In saying that I do have lentils and beans and neither seem to be hurting me too much so far. M&S has a lovely Spicy Lentil Soup which has 150cal with net carbs of 9.3g for 1/2 a pot.

    Anyway, hope that helps.

One of my friends cats, Carter, got very large before he was diagnosed with a bladder problem and but on a special food.
No return of problems for Froglet since the other week – she is dreadful at never seeming to drink water, although there’s always some there for her, so particularly in the hot weather I’ve been adding water to her food so that she is less likely to get dehydrated again.

Apparently, she needs 60ml of water per kilo per day – so 240ml of water
canned food is around 75% water content – so 300g of food is 225ml of water
I can add about 50 ml of water per can, so that means that she should have enough fluid – along with the odd dish of cat milk.

She doesn’t get notably skinnier or lighter when we go to the farm – the only time I noticed that was when she spent a week at a cattery – we have a cat sitter now!

Soooo sad … On two counts

Love lentil soup and have a lovely recipe. Since seeing your post sunshine-girl I’m bemused! Yes I’ve seen red lentils at 60g of carbs in 100g then I’ve seen cooked values that when worked back to raw are much lower. I use 500g in my soup, 8 servings, but using Fatsecret sainsburys raw red lentils there are just 17.5g per 100g.

So who knows. Think I may just keep eating the soup occasionally and forget the carbs other than those in my recipe according to Fatsecret.

No 2 ….. tried on a top tonight that I was sure would fit ….. tried 4 skimpy tops on earlier this week and three out of the four were great! The one I tried tonight is still too tight !!! Never mind will just have to try harder!

That $ 100 million bux was well worth it. I am sitting here watching Andy Murray kick Granollers ass in a game and the roof is closed. What a great investment so that there is no procrastination in the game. I love this new stadium! Well worth every penny.

Well, I am sitting at the stadium. I had a few healthy munchies this morning for breakfast. Murray just won the first game against The Mighty Spaniard: Granollers. Not as crowded as last night! I guess too many people are still stuck to the MATRIX and stuck on the RAT RACE. SUCKERS! They can stay as slaves to the workforce! I wanted my freedom and got it a long time ago from the Wall Street Burnout Syndrome!

Well, security check was interesting. They demanded me open my thermos which has chicken soup in it. Nothing like living in a “FREE” country ran by the STASI. Wait a sec…… did the Berlin Wall fall down 25 years ago? I am not so sure. i must ask Checkpoint Charlie. Nothing like arguing with these simpleton security guys.

back to the game. See you later!

GO SERENA WILLIAMS AND ANDY MURRAY!

I’m just cross with myself that it took me so long to realise – I thought she was being greedy and have been trying to limit how much she has, but it makes perfect sense really.
I think manufacturers should be required to put calorie values on the packaging, like with human food.
I used to work for Cats Protection – we did see some huge ones, you do get obese cats too! I remember visiting a volunteer who’d recently taken in a ‘stray’ who was ginormous – so big he couldn’t jump up to the higher tier of the pen, the woman that had taken him in had said he was a stray that she’d ‘just been feeding in her garden for a few weeks’.

Lots of people here use my fitness pal, but in the last few days Verano has sold me on FatSecret, despite the awful name, I have abandoned three months data to switch over – I find it lots easier to use.

Especially having a UK site – make sure you use .uk rather than .com site, although if you register on one you can use the other with the same sign on (assuming you are in the UK and not American!)
I like the fatseret dropdowns, and recall of previous foods, which make it lots easier and faster to use
In general I have found the nutrition data a lot more reliable – and easier to find
For each food, you can choose a variety of portion sizes, with nearly everything I’ve tried having the option of simple number of grams – on MFP, you can find the ingredient, then only have the option to choose it by ‘cup’
US measures carbs differently to UK – one is net of fibre, the other not, I can’t remember the detail, but will make a big difference to what you measure
I like the monthly summary display

I do find the medical establishment’s contradictory reactions frustrating, especially when there is scientific evidence to back up the findings. I’m not diabetic but my former partner was morbidly obese (29st when I met him) and in our time together was referred for gastric band surgery. When I attended the initial and pre op appointments with him, the pre-op dietician’s advice to shrink the liver prior to surgery was very similar to the principles of BSD, albeit using low fat or fat free versions of dairy; 800 cals per day, no carbs. So I took it onboard and organised his 6 week crash diet.. and he lost 3 STONE. That was before the band was even fitted. So the healthcare professionals (and especially those involved with obesity related illness such as type 2 diabetes) KNOW THIS STUFF.

What worries me is that the information is not disseminated through to the local GP’s, who could save the NHS a lot of money longterm by encouraging and supporting obese and diabetic patients to move to the BSD way of eating and living.

    Rant over!

I frequently get phases like this – lose a bit but a kilo back on, lose that and a bit more, stay static – occasionally I can put it down to going over on cals or carbs, but I can equally have a ‘going over’ day and lose a lot, or a ‘compliant’ day and go up.
Are you weighing daily or weekly? whichever it is, I wouldn’t start panicking yet.

I don’t measure my blood at home, only HBa1c occasionally, so can’t comment in fluctuations in that or otherwise

If all you’ve done is increased the calorie count by 100, and kept the carbs relatively low, I’d say that this was just a blip.

Could be to do with state of your body in terms of water, or poo (sorry), or a number of other things. Have you also been exercising and therefore building muscle?

Whatever, I shouldn’t panic, but keep on keeping on and see what happens over the next few days/week.

Hi folks, I have a different problem. I lost approx 20kg on this diet and knocked off some diabetes tablets, a blood pressure tablet and statins. I kept up the programme for quite a number of weeks after the 8 weeks. At the moment in one week, keeping to 60g carbs and approx 900 calories I have put 1 kg on!! My fasting blood sugars have also raised. It’s as if, whilst everyone else is remaining static, I am actually gaining.
