    Hopefully those links work.

When I lose that pound I’ll hit the top of my healthy BMI. Believe it or not, the bottom is 7st! I would never want one go that low!!!

I’m probably just going to keep carbs low, watch what I eat, watch portion sizes, and continue to record everything do I can monitor what is happening. I’ll probably aim to stay between 9 and 9.5 stone (ish) – just gives me some wriggle room and means I won’t worry if I continue to lose weight in he short-term.

    Avila,
I noticed something similar, people at work didn’t comment at all when I lost 2 and a bit stone. Went on holiday and came back two weeks later having put a few pounds back on and everyone noticed straight away that I had lost weight! Nice to get compliments but agree it’s the benefits I’m feeling that really counts.
I’m waiting til I’ve completed my next 8 weeks to go clothes shopping. Can’t wait! (although I’ve had to buy a belt to keep my trousers up)

    Hi ruthdownunder,
Way to go, will your husband really listen though? It’s not a lot to lose, just enjoy the moment when it finally falls off.
I am taking ‘time off’ it’s also a bit of an experiment with me too, I am eating half bsd, ( because I like the food) and enjoying a few treats too, really to see what happens to my weight over a week, so I have got until Tuesday night then in the Wednesday morning I will weigh myself and see if I have lost, put on, or stayed the same! then I will ‘do’ the bsd proper to lose the final seven pounds, then I will reasses myself, I have a suspicion that I will want to lose a bit more!
Oh well, good luck with your last few pounds, will you stay on the forum?
    Christine.

Back in the 1960s diabetics, along with everyone else, were told to restrict carbs. Bread and potatoes were the enemy (I don’t think we ate pasta then).

Then low-fat came in. And the obesity and diabetes epidemics started. When they took fat out it had to be replaced with something for flavour – so they added sugar. With obvious results. Even today it appears that food manufacturers feel a strange need to add sugar even to meat products! And some labels show more than one type of sugar has been added.

But the pendulum has now swung in the opposite direction and we are starting to reap the benefits 😃

Also, if youre now wearing clothes that are getting TOO loose, you can still look exactly the same.
The trousers ive worn over the last two days are getting clownishly large on me..and it means my silhouette looks just as big! So it could be that folk are only seeing yr outline while yr real body is disguised by extraneous material!
Could be its time to ditch some clothes?
Main thing is,you have lost all that weight and done yrself a great big favour! X

  • Hi 54,
Has your blood pressure reduced as that could be reducing your macular oedema?
Have you noticed a reduction in oedema in any other areas eg swollen ankles/fingers if you experience this.

Bissell, I found a couple of old photos yesterday & almost frightened myself 😱 Seeing the difference between the old and new photos is scary!

Rozy – not sure about “smug face” – might be sending for paramedics to treat me for shock! LOL

SunnyB – yes, thrilled. Also surprised at how quickly it’s happened. Don’t worry, you don’t get rid of me that easily LOL. I’ll be starting a new thread when I hit target – posting helps me, keeps me accountable. I’ll need that as I start a new stage in this journey.

  • Hi KrysiaD

I find it strange we both have positive changes so feel must be something we are doing as I have never had one previously

Cant find anything in ‘the book’ or on the web site about improvements in macular disorders

cant find any research done on the subject either.

Good to keep monitoring this though

  • Yes – I found the same. After 8 weeks fluid completely gone. Fingers crossed that it is still the same at the next hospital eye clinic appointment shortly. The consultant told me that each injection cost £800 – so a huge saving to the NHS. Also – I find the whole procedure horrible. When I told one doctor what I was doing he said that keeping my blood sugars in the non-diabetic range would make no difference whatsoever and that my eye would continue to get worse. There was absolutely nothing I could do. I am hopeful that I will prove him completely wrong.

The occasional beer should be okay, as long as he is keeping the rest of his carb intake low on the days he decides to have a beer. I was away for ten weeks earlier this year and was observing the principles of the BSD most of the time while away. I gained 2.8lb and that was with the occasional wine, spirit, cake and ice cream. Think you have to be realistic, if he is going to drink beer, he has to expect to gain a pound or two. You both know though, that it will be easy to get back to the BSD and get rid of it once home.

Have a fab time and don’t worry too much about having the occasional holiday treat.

I must be the same age as your mum Snoop. Your memory is spot on. It was all about ditching the bread and potatoes 50 years ago – they were the bad guys that caused the weight gain. I followed the advice and was skinny. I remember being so confused when the advice completely changed and bread and potatoes and everything low fat were now the good guys and would keep us slim and healthy. Looking back – that was the start of my battle with my weight. My daughter was very impressed with my weight loss on the BSD but I had a stern lecture from her that all the yo yo dieting must stop as it is so unhealthy. I could quite honestly say to her that this is the end of the yo yo dieting as it actually a healthy way of eating that you can keep to for the long term.

The strange thing is that I can remember my mum trying to diet 45-50 years ago, and the recommendations she got were very similar to the BSD. More calories than the BSD, I imagine from what she was eating, but similar advice about carbs. So at some point, at least some medical practitioners did know.

Hi my husband and I have just completed 12 weeks of the BSD we’ve both lost 2 and half stone each and his bs have dropped well after giving up on all meds at the start of week 2 . He is type 2 I’m not ,,We are now starting a 3 week holiday and naturally he would like to have a few beers , we are hoping to still keep quite careful with doing the 5&2 whilst away . But he would like a beer or two . We’ve heard Pilsner is best but when we research it’s as bad as any other beer . Any useful suggestions would be appreciated

Hi PatFraser – lots of us hit plateaus and they are quite common early on – think it is something to do with the body adjusting to the new regime. It’s hard to stay positive when going through a plateau, but try to stay focused and know that it will come right in the end. Just remember all the key things, like drinking plenty, using full fats and watching the carbs. Trying to find the non-weight positives will help buoy you up – feeling fitter, sleeping better, pair of trousers fitting just a bit better – basically any little thing that you can us as a plus.

You will soon be posting positive results again I’m sure. Stick with it, cos it will work, believe me. Looking forward to reading about your goo news soon.

Neen welcome to the clan! The more have experienced this the better in a way because if it is caused by the BSD then it will recover, hopefully as it will be Telogen Effluvium as opposed to female pattern baldness. It can only be one of the two as far as endless hours of research show me…and the former is much better news as recoverable from. My doctor just smiles and I can see he thinks I’m just post menopausal and I should get over it. But I just know it’s not an age thing ….I can’t prove it but 99% certain so it looks like a waiting game. I’m sure all on This thread will pitch with any hints and solutions they find. Hang on in there and we will come out of the other end of it I am sure!

Avila, humans are quite complex beings. Sometimes they give compliments just for something to say or have been told to try and see good in things. When you actually lose weight I think they are afraid you are going to be insulted (do I look like I needed to) or say you have a serious illness.

I have a photo of me (which kick started the diet) in a particular dress going out and thought I looked nice. When I lost just under a stone (4lbs on a different diet but took 2 months and then 8.5 on this) I put the dress back on and asked hubby to take a photo in exactly the same pose. I couldn’t see a difference. Sometimes it is what you are wearing, how you are standing, even who you are talking to. Also if people see you nearly every day it is different, hubby cannot see it in me but daughter could after 9 weeks apart.

Interesting observation – one person I work with has said a couple of times over the year ‘you are losing weight, I can see it’ when I wasn’t (in fact gaining) but just wearing different shape of clothes or something.

Now i have lost over a stone and clothes looser – an d absolutely no comments, or signs that people have noticed! I know that being tall at 5 ft 10 meant that I have more space over which to hide the excess, but thought that a stone might have some visibility. Oh well I have the scales in my favour, the feeling healthier (lowered BP) and fitting into things that used to be tight…. the notice of others is so so minor. Just perverse that got comments when not losing, not not when I am!

I started the BSD in March and soon after, I was shocked when great amounts of hair started to come out in my hands when washing my hair. It is still falling out 5 months later and really, really upsetting me. I’ve been to an endocrinologist recently to check out the thyroid etc but endo thinks my thyroid is fine and believes it could be because of big weight loss so quickly on this diet but no answers as to why it’s still falling out at an alarming rate. I’m eating very well with plenty of nutritious food so am at a loss as to why it’s still happening. I reckon I’ve lost about half of my hair and shudder to think what it’ll be like by the end of the year. Seems the doctors have no idea. Just tell me to buy Rogaine!!! And hope for the best. Not very reassuring! Hopefully we get some regrowth soon. Good luck everyone.

Great that you are going to speak to your doctor. If you are doing the BSD 800 you will need to also cut pasta, rice, cereal, all grains (one or 2 exceptions) and potatoes. If that sounds daunting, look for posts on here about what we eat to replace them. I love cauliflower mash and cauliflower rice and many more alternatives.

If you mean meal replacements then I don’t know anyone on here that uses them. The meals we have are so nutritious that we prefer to make proper meals from real food. If you mean liquid meals like ready shakes, again no-one here uses them. I think they are mentioned for the bariatric patients (stomach ops) who cannot manage real food at first. Part of the enjoyment of this diet is eating and chewing is a very important part as it triggers the ‘full’ response in your brain, liquids don’t do this and are frankly boredom in a glass.

Now if you mean vitamin and mineral supplements, it is recommended that a multi-vitamin might be of use, be see above, our meals are packed with all the essential nutrients so you should not need them.

If you want a great liquid meal maybe once or twice a week then the breakfast shakes in the book are great, I love the melon, blueberry, spinach and almond milk drink but would only have it for breakfast as it is only 100 to 130 calories.

I’m not sure this is what you wanted to hear but without ready meals and energy shakes we have all managed very well on this diet and enjoy the food more than we enjoyed the old way of eating. I’m sure you will have lots more questions so don’t be put off and good luck. When is your proper start date. We would all like to follow your progress.

Let that fact keep you going and i am sure you will continue to see good results..there are just phases along the way where the scales arent kind..but watch out for those non scale victories like finding that yr blood rest results are significantly better and that suddenly clothes feel looser!
Keep on keeping on,you wont regret it and the weeks will fly. At the moment yr body is still adjusting to the big better changes you are choosing to make! And the cravings for takeaways etc get less and less as time goes on x

Verano – I definitely think it was reading the forums that kept me on the straight and narrow. It is the first holiday that I have ever had where – although I did eat more calories – they were all legal. Before the holiday my portion sizes had crept up a bit and I had hit a plateau so I decided I would continue with this on holiday – but today I am re-energised and back on track and am doing the 800. I think that it is great that I can ease off a little sometimes and as long as I only eat the legal food – which I now really love – my weight either stays as it is or I have a tiny weight gain.
In the past I have done WW, SW and Rosemary Conley. I was either on the diet or spectacularly failing. This time it is different – maybe because it is a lifestyle change and not really a diet, and I do really love the food. What was great also was there seems to be a much greater willingness by chefs and restaurant and pub staff these days to cater for low carb eating.
Well done Sunshine girl on your weight loss – I hope to be able to report the same next week

I feel your pain PatFraser! 2 weeks and no loss. However, I do think my shape is shrinking though this is difficult for me to see when I have over 50kg to lose and have lost 20. It seems quite common for people to have a plateau and it will eventually drop again if you are sticking at it. I take comfort from the fact that I am no longer Type 2 Diabetic; some changes are just going to take me a lot longer to reach but I am determined to continue as this is a way of life, not a diet for me. Good luck for the week ahead.

I need to sit down with my DR on the meds side but in the short term going to drop alcohol (gulp) reduce bread and kick start the exercise. In the book it talks about using diet meals/supplements initially whilst you get your head around the menu’s, I would also find this useful at work. Are there recommended ones to use?

I will be fasting during the weekdays and having weekends “off” but still Med style and focused on nutrition.

Thank Sunny, I only decided to check on the carbs as I have gone off piste and started devising my own meal plans. Knowing now that the soup is quite high I will avoid it but now having that knowledge I could replace the lentils in dinner with something like cauli rice or courgetti. However, then my calories would be around 500 for the day. As I said, a real balancing act. I have ordered the official BDS recipe book (I just love to browse) and hope I can get lots more ideas whilst remembering to keep my own count. This diet gets more and more interesting.

  • posted by  SunnyB on Counting carbs.

Think the recipes in the book and the meal plans are designed to keep the carbs relatively low without taxing you to count them, however, most of us go off-piste and mix and match dishes, design our own and put together our own menus, which means we need to be more aware of the carbs.

The first time I plateaued, I was advised to start tracking carbs, as a way of kick starting things again. Since then I have been counting total carbs and keeping around the 50g mark or lower wherever possible. It’s been working, so on the basis of ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ I have stuck with this format.

Olive oil, a slice or two of cold meat or as you say, some cheese, would all offer more calories with little to no impact on the carbs. And if you feel full, it doesn’t matter if you are under on calories today, ‘cos in a couple of days time, you might well go over, so it all balances out over the long term.

That is a question I have too. I have not been counting carbs as I have been following the menu plans and recipes in the book. I know they can be a bit out but today I had the beetroot and apple soup with white beans and a portion came out at 39 carbs which seems quite a lot considering I only have 11 left for the rest of the day. Fortunately, I had scrambled egg and mushroom (1 carb) for breakfast and will be having spiced duck breast with lentils, roasted red pepper and asparagus (23 carbs) which makes my total for the day 65, which is a lot lower than someone not on this diet. However, my calories are only 630 so will need to find something zero carb to top myself up to around 800. Start with 10gm very dark choc at 50 calories and 1 gram of carb. So I still have 120 calories to eat. Worked out I can have 30 grams of cheddar cheese for 120 calories and no carbs. So all good, but what a balancing act. I have a good carb counter but the carbs I have counted are total carbs.

As an afterthought I have just looked at the recipes in the book and it gives calories but not carbs, why not when we are counting both.
