Josie – 1001 Things to do with a Courgette???!! 😳

Beetroot chocolate cake is magnificent. I made a lot of it the previous year and the kids ate it like a pack of wolves. I never told them that they were eating veg or they would’ve immediately spat it out!! I find now that as log as I don’t tell them anything is ‘healthy’ or good for them until after they’ve devoured it I’m ok!!

Been walking into and around town today. Son is happy to do this now that Pokemon Go is here! All I know is that my Jawbone is happy and I’m clocking up the miles on my sponsored MyMarathon 👍🏼. Resisted ice cream and had coffee instead while we were out. I have a Nigella choc muffin for an afternoon treat if I fancy it but need to label/iron school uniform first 🙄

Wine is most definitely a no no on the BSD. It seems to be the worst/ easiest thing for suddenly gaining a lb or 2. But as Lucky found out, pretty easy to lose again once you’re back on the wagon!

WHY DOES DANIEL NOT USE MICROWAVES AND USING ONLY CELL PHONE FOR BRIEF FAST CALLS??????????

    http://www.naturalhealth365.com/5G-wireless-technology-1958.html

Read up on HF (high frequency) and Microwaves in the upper atmosphere. One does not need to be a Ham Operator (Like Myself) to understand how your brains and reproductive organs are getting fried like and a sunny side up!

I am doing some window shopping this morning before going across the river to Queens for more tennis. lord and Taylor did not have much on hats for a selection. It looked like they sold a lot of their stock on summer hats already. I have to go to a haberashery instead.

I am quickly ckecking out this one this morning:

    jjhatcenter.com

I could use a new good Borsalino. If the price is right. They get a bit pricy. You pay for quality!

    Breakfast: None

    Lunch:
1 Cup Greek yogurt with blueberries

    Snack:

1 Cup Greek Yogurt with blueberries

    Dinner:
    1 Cup cottage cheese
    1 can sardines
    1 Peach
    2 Apple

What a wild day today in Flushing Meadows! My 2 favorite stars playing each other: david ferrer and Juan Del Potro! Del Potro did a great win in this game. David Ferrer has a great attitude in tennis. That is why he is my second fav one. I read Murray’s lips and he is saying a few bad words to himself. Thankfully, they never tape the stuff he says. It would be Rated R to watch the 4 tennis championships. LOL

Del Potro is making a great comeback. He has not been to the US OPEN in 3 years. Monfils from France is also making a fantastic comeback to the US OPEN. Both players I would love to see them in the final championship. But, it is more likely Djokavich and Andy Murray!

Djokavich match was crazy. The second set started and his opponent stopped and retired. The pain and suffering in tennis. People just do not understand the pain in all your joints for being a pro. A say Accupuncture and Ayurveda would be best for such ailments. Even Michaels Phelps does this traditional medicine stuff for his swimming.

Well, Sunday is another day at US Open and Monday being Labor day will be packed to the walls also. It was standing room only with Del Potro match. It was really crowded in the Armstrong Stadium.

Your taste buds will adjust Flowerpot. Like Igorasusual, I’ve been doing this for weeks now and very much dislike sweet stuff now. Very occasionally I will have a hankering for something with some sweetness, but I find it takes very little to quench that now – quarter of a teaspoon of honey in yogurt, or a few raspberries is plenty. But most of the time I have no desire for anything sweet. You’ll soon be the same, so don’t despair. It just take awhile for the body to adjust.

  • For me it has to be Michael Mosley’s 8 week Blood Sugar Diet book but depends on whether you are diabetic and want to do the full thing or just want to lose some weight. We are all different. If you buy a book by someone else then it is this diet and I know there are lots of them around but in my opinion, not as good.

  • Hi Vikkia, I’m no expert as I’m still waiting for my copy of Michael Mosley’s book The 8-week blood sugar diet. Meanwhile, I learned a lot by reading the various sections in the Get Started menu at the top of the page. It’s a bit difficult to give you any advice because the BSD covers several options, as you’ll see in the Get Started menu.

If you want an actual plan to follow, you’ll need to look at the options and decide which suits you best and buy the appropriate book. They’re not that expensive.

Good luck, whichever option you go for!

  • Start by doing a menu plan before you shop then you know what to buy. If you don’t have the book there are recipes for every meal on here to get you started. My staples are veg and more veg, red peppers are a must as are courgette and celery and don’t forget the cauliflower, there is so much you can do with it (see cauliflower recipe thread). Did I mention spinach. Cold sliced ham or chicken, eggs, full fat cheese and full fat greek yoghurt. Thats a start.

Good luck, you will love it and the results.

WooHoo! Way to go captainlynne!! Fantastic achievement. What an amazing achievement, all from your determination and fortitude and a wonderful inspiration to so may as well.

  • Welcome Vikkia
the book has a recipe section and meal plan – or you can simply adapt your normal meals and drop the carbs.
There is a search box at the top right hand corner of the website page where you can access previous threads on subjects that you are interested in – for example “Shopping list” will bring u a number of existing threads.

  • Hi guys where do I start?? I do my food shop tomorrow, so I need some ideas on what to buy etc.. Can some one point in the direction of a menu planner/ plan to follow ? I need to loose about 40 kgs. I’m looking to do the fast plan. Thanks looking forward to getting to know every one and sharing my success..

    Morning!
I got up at 6 or 7 then went back to bed that’s what Sunday mornings are for! – it’s odd I am way more likely to do that on a Sunday morning, even when I’m not working regular Monday to Fridays.
I had chicken sausages for breakfast (on sale in supermarket – no added gunk and gluten free) decidedly odd – I’ll finish the packet but I don’t think I’d get them again.

Sort of agreeing on alcohol and food Gavin – I had a v small glass of red wine last night with cheese after dinner – really had munchies/craving when I got home. Salted caramel ice cream some time around midnight!

The beetroot muffins didn’t have any chocolate in them (the base of the very delicious red velvet cake) when I googled to get an idea of carb I found a recipe with carrot and beetroot in. On fat secret, I couldn’t be bothered to load that recipe in given that I’d had one cake and didn’t know if it was that actual recipe. Their database had a “Quinoa, Red Lentil & Beetroot Veg Cake! !?!? – it had a similar carb count so I logged that instead.

Somewhere I have the book “Red Velvet Chocolate Heartache” a book full of cakes with no wheat and a vegetable base. You’ll probably have gathered that I am not the world’s most prolific cook, so I haven’t made many from it, but may find it at some point & see if some can be adapted to be BSD friendly.

I dodged the rain yesterday & didn’t get wet despite being out all afternoon – we left the fete at the right moment though (yes, the walk was circular, Lucky) as it started raining about half a mile out of the car park.

Hello Yowzer, yesterday was terrible, wasn’t it? Ooooh, I love Olly Murs, he’s a sweetheart. I remember liking him from his first X Factor Audition. Yes, I was the same at that age, my daughter is now. She asks me if she can go out, I look out at the monsoon like weather and I think she’s crazy, but I think we all did it. I get so frustrated by umbrellas now I’m older, it’s very rare that I use one, because I can move quicker without battling one 😉 Yesterday was one of the rare occasions.

  • Hello all. I started on 29th too so thought I’d join along here with you all.
I’m male, age 44, start weight at 127.3 kg and recently I’ve felt a bit of a wreck health wise.

Last year a routine blood test showed I was in the diabetic range but I agreed with my Doctor that I would manage with diet. If i’m honest after a couple of weeks I was soon back in my old routines, eating everything I shouldn’t and drinking far too much alcohol. I was paying no attention to my health and fitness.

A couple of months ago I started to get some of the classic symptoms of diabetes, thirsty, and disturbed sleep from going to the loo 3 or 4 times a night. My pee had a very strange smell and I knew something wasn’t right, I felt like my body was telling me a tipping point had been reached and if I didn’t change my ways something bad was going to happen. My dad did a blood glucose test for me and I was horrified to see that it was at 20.0 mmol. My dad is diabetic and on a load of medication and then my sister found out she was too and her doctor immediately put her on metformin. I was determined I wouldn’t be going down the medication route!

So nearly one week in on the BSD and things are going really well. My weight has dropped by 0.9 kg – I was expecting to have lost more but I haven’t done much exercise this week. However my weight at the end of July was 131.9 kg and since then I’ve reduced the booze and started BSD I’ve lost 5.5 kg in total – so I’m really pleased with that.

I’ve been tracking my blood glucose every morning, before any food or drink – and these results are really pleasing. I’ve listed my readings below (some prior to BSD)

    02/08 16.7
    03/08 16.8
    06/08 17.0
    13/08 16.6
    17/08 16.2
    25/08 16.2
    27/08 14.7
    30/08 13.0 (Day 1 BSD)
    31/08 12.8
    01/09 10.9
    02/09 9.7
    03/09 11.0
    04/09 9.0

My blood pressure is also lower than its been for months, I’m sleeping better and I feel generally just more alert and interested in life again. I’m following the recipes in the book and I’m finding them really tasty.
I know its a long journey but I’m buzzing with the progress so far!

  • Igor, Thank you for replying. I didn’t have fatless duck on purpose, just came like that in the pack. Bit of butter, well how much do you need to scramble an egg, so again, not trying to avoid fat. Had plenty of olive oil to cook the pepper and asparagus. I did a calculation on the soup as I had recommended it to someone and then found it was 39g carb so I said I would not be having it again in a hurry. Knowing that I would not have had the lentils as well but they were planned, it is what I had in and went well with duck. Next time one or the other. I have never counted carbs as I have relied on the menu plans but went off piste for the first time yesterday and reached 65g so will look more carefully. The weight does not bother me so much as the sudden increase in b/g when I am normally around 90 to 110 but it could be something as stupid as I had a bad nights sleep as I have wrenched my shoulder. Tomorrow is another day. Keep on keeping on (or keeping it off).

Hi folks x the weather here was atrocious yesterday, and there was a big music festival on..aimed at the fairly early teens…appearances by jason de rulo, olly murs, tinie tempah ( tho i must admit,as a 66 yr old,i love Tinie!) anyway i felt sorry for all the kids heading there excitedly but getting soaked. But i guess they werent at all bothered by bad weather! Saw them all returning about 11 pm,still in very high spirits.great to be young and unmoved by torrential rain! I remember being 14, sharing umbrella with my pal in pouring rain and wind, and the umbrella turning inside out. We were doubled up laughing, i laughed so much i wet myself! These days i just feel vexed when the wind blows brolly inside out!
Get well soon GAVIN and happy Sunday everyone!
LUCKY,September always seems like New Year to me,with the start of new academic year.! X
WelcomeFLOWERPOT and welcome back JOSIE x

  • Such a small increase it’s likely just one of those inexplicable blips to do with water (or other!) retention.

However, one thing that does occur to me in your menu yesterday is that you had beans (in the soup) AND lentils for dinner.

And what’s with the ‘tiny bit of butter’ and ‘fatless duck breast’ – surely not avoiding fat? Or was it just the calories.

But probably not worth analysing, and you’ll be double your usual downward movement tomorrow! 😉

morning all, I made a belt last night, pink fabric covered in the spiderweb lace 🙂

My soup was good enough but not awesome, and we had stuffed courgette with pork mince for dinner.

I’m really taking a break I guess I’ve not even been weighing myself I just hope I’ve not done damage lol. I was feeling quite ‘fat’ yesterday but then I realised that I was wearing clothes that are too big, so two things I have taken from that.

    1. I haven’t grown back into my old clothes.
    2. wearing things that don’t fit, don’t make you feel good about yourself.

Today I had some greek yoghurt and some strawberries, now I’m having some of my chicken chilli soup. Not sure about dinner but I might look for a new recipe. Back at work tomorrow why does a week off pass so quickly 🙁

    Hi ruthdownunder.

    Thanks.

I’ll have to go back to a big city for shopping! I was out yesterday and realised that the stores in the nearest (small) city had lots of trousers. And ‘student’ clothes (Durham has an excellent university), but I wanted a skirt (lived in comfortable trousers for many years) and a cardigan that doesn’t come down to my knees 😱 And the stores that do have ‘petite’ ranges are few & far between with a tiny selection 😢

Oh well, any excuse for a trip to a big city LOL.

  • Well done 54! Your results and reduction in medical condition is inspiring and I am sure if anything will keep you on this way of life it’s the thought of your eyes getting better all the time! I do feel my eyesight is brighter now don’t know if it’s because the tiredness has left me though! Anyhow, yesterday’s stats cals 796, carbs 37.5, steps over 11,000. Weight today another 1 1/4lb down 11lbs in total after day 6! Can’t wait for end of the week stats now! Have a great Sunday everyone!x

Urg, now I feel bad for blaming my family for keeping dessert leftovers. Not their fault! They would have been happy if I’d just kept them one serve each and given away the rest! Totally my sneaky cravings to blame for keeping so much. So my plan is, when no one is watching I will throw away around half. Better wasted in the bin than binged on!

I’ve finished listening to The signature of all things, and although I did enjoy it I think it is too long to appeal to the masses. If you like a long detailed life story type read though I would recommend it. Certainly was a twisting and turning story.

I watched the movie ‘Cloud Atlas’ yesterday and thought I might enjoy the book so I’ve downloaded it, I guess that will be my next big read. I need to get back to Ruby Wax as well!

Ugh, hope you’re better soon Gavin. I know, tell me about it, it was shocking here yesterday. The rain has held off this morning so far but it’s chilly and grey, and I have a feeling the rain isn’t too far off now.

Welcome home Josie, nice to see you back 🙂 Well done on a reasonable weight gain for a fortnight away, and losing it too, nearly half of that gone in a couple of days! This WOE is amazing. Wine is a bugger though, I’ve decided to avoid it as much as possible from now on.

  • Had a bit of a shock this morning. Weight up half a pound and b/g 131 (7.2) Not terrible but first time this has happened since I started the diet 9 / 10 weeks ago.
Just so you might be able to spot something, yesterday I had –
breakfast – 1 egg scrambled with one large mushroom – tiny bit of butter for cooking
lunch – beetroot, apple and bean soup – as per MMs recipes (although I did discover this has 39 g carb but have had it before with no ill effect)
dinner – 4 slices of skinless, fatless duck breast marinated in 5 spices spices and olive oil served on brown lentils, roasted red pepper and asparagus.
Snacks – 20g chicken breast before my swim, 6 pistachio nuts and 4 almonds after swim, 1 slice of ham with 30g wensleydale cheese (before bed snack)
Discovered I had only had about 630 calories so allowed myself 10g v v dark chocolate which I often have and 1 large vodka and slimline tonic.
Total calories 805, total carbs 65 – though above the 50 it is probably what I normally have although I don’t usually count carbs, just avoid them.
    Exercise – 40 minutes swimming

Obviously the vodka and tonic are now gone but is there anything else that looks suspect.
edit: just looked again and the calories were 805 before the drink – oops, was that it
    Bisous xx

Now I have a problem! We had a big family Fathers Day BBQ today, I hosted. I made sure I sent away lots of the leftovers with guests, but with a husband and two children here at home I was NOT allowed to get rid of all the dessert! So now I have some lemon tart, passion fruit creme brûlée, and chocolate brownies – enough that it will probably be here two days. How can I resist for two days with it sitting right there in the fridge? Help!

I agree about the clothes mindset. Plus I’Ve posted a while ago about having my mother fitting on my shoulder whispering in my ear. Along the lines of ‘mutton dressed as lamb’, ‘you can’t wear green or black’ etc, etc.

Through the advice and support on here I spent hours while I was in York looking in all the clothes shops I could find. Years ago I had my colours done – I’m a ‘winter’. Most of the clothes at the moment are ‘summer’ colours. I’ve even ordered lots of clothes from a catalogue so I can try them at home. Bought some, returned lots.

I ordered a skirt and when it arrived I loved it. Until I tried it on. It looked great, but It was nearly ground level and I could just see myself catching my heel in the harm and the skirt (elasticated waist) slipping off. Not a pretty sight😱 I did think about shortening it, but decided it would only spoil the skirt 😥 so with great reluctance I returned it – they only do the one length so I couldn’t order a shorter one!

I wish more clothes shops stocked ‘petite’ ranges. Just read an article today about ‘petite’ ladies shopping in teenager ranges in various shops. I did know that, but I’d forgotten!

I really need to get past the various ‘hang ups’ I have about clothes, and it will take time. Time I just don’t have at the moment. But at least I’ve discovered jeans!😃

It seems to be a sad fact, that the BSD changes your body’s ability to handle alcohol. I find that I’m likely to rise feeling headachy and jaded after just a couple of modest glasses of wine now. Last night I had a small dry sherry and 175ml red wine and had to take a painkiller this morning! That said, during our up coming break in Turkey, I’ll be having the odd libation.

Enjoy your holiday Wendymay54 and I’ll look forward to your updates on your return.

Well done captainlynne!!!! Fantastic achievement!!!! Now just ‘live the life’!!!!!

You’re probably having problems on the clothes front because you still have your ‘old heavy self head on’. As with BSD where it takes time for your body to adjust to low carbs it will take you time to adjust to your new shape! Why don’t you just keep trying different styles on in the shops and I’m sure it will be no time at all before you realise that you actually can wear all sorts of clothes that you would never have even looked at back in December.

Good luck on the clothes front and wit your maintenance.

Good morning everyone, sheeeeesh, I am shattered today, and I had a lie in until 8.30 am – almost unheard of. Sometimes I think the more sleep I have, the worse I feel. But I must have needed it, so…

Hello Flowerpot and welcome 🙂 There is a whole list of ramblings, that should be like a ‘pinned post’ to the top of this thread, for those moments that you wonder ‘What are they going on about?’ 😉

Sounds like a really nice, successful day on many counts, Frog 🙂 I love a good Fete or Fair. Did the walk end up back at the Fete in the end? I mentioned the other day that I’d been hinting about the coastal walk to my husband, it’s on my 40 before (during and evidently now, AFTER!) 40 list. He suggested we walk a chunk of it next week when the children are back in school, and then get the bus back. I’m really looking forward to it. It’s not the direction I would have started the walk in, he’s taking us the other way, but thinking about it, it makes sense for getting back home.

I’ve never tried beetroot in a cake, but apparently it’s really nice. I don’t know about other parts of the country, I assume they’re all the same now, but the schools local to here are all healthy schools, since a good couple of years now. And when you get the menus at the start of term, you can see what meals are made out of and I know the chocolate cake is a beetroot chocolate cake. I think I would have paled at the thought of trying it pre BSD. But now my confidence has grown in both my cooking ability and the joys of cooking with unusual ingredients and turning out something that tastes lovely with them… I think I would give it a try. Cake/bread with courgette is another I’m yet to try. But – thinking about it, one of my most succcessful pre BSD family cakes was my carrot cake. That has become the norm in the cake world, hasn’t it?

My third child, who is notoriously fussy, looked like he was going to faint yesterday when I told him the ingredients of the chocolate cake which apparently was one of the nicest cakes he’d ever eaten, apart from my carrot cake. Especially when I mentioned almond flour. When we got home, I showed him all the ingredients individually and let him smell them (lol) and then he asked for another slice so, I think I’m winning him over to healthier eating.

Last day of the school holidays here. Woefully unprepared, for once. Skeleton uniform for the children as I left it too late and all their sizes were barren, so it’s going to be wash and wear for the next few days! No new school bags until later today. At least they have new shoes and pants. It just went so quickly.
