on 24 Jun 2017 at 22:46 in Fast 800Well done, Polly, what amazing strength you demonstrated in going for the nuts instead of having a complete free for all when faced with the evil fayre of a typical petrol station! Although you may have overeaten the following day, you’ve managed to pull it back, get on track again with no harm done. So brilliant – you should be very proud of yourself!
Choccy Holic – great weight loss, well done!!! I know exactly what you mean about getting as much food as you can for your daily calorie intake – it’s so important not to feel hungry and deprived. It’s strange that being on this diet and eating on average a fifth of what I was consuming before leaves me with no hunger pangs at all – so different from the feeling of needing to eat all the time and never feeling satiated when I’m not on a carb reduced diet!
I’m saving fifty calories or so daily to have in the form of Kallo corn cakes just before bed and I’m sleeping a lot better which is great. Second weighing day coming up on Monday – just hope I’m still heading in the right direction!
Enjoy the rest of the weekend everyone – off up to the Lake District next Weds but will be going with my twin and her hubby who I’ve managed to get on board too as she is pre diabetic and needs this kind of approach to life too. Will post any losses on Monday. 🙂

No they can be any 2 days in 7. You decide what suits you and your lifestyle. If you are on an 800 fast you might want to do it when you have no plans i.e. going out or even when you are at work when you are not thinking about food. It is up to you.

I have salicylate intolerance. Luckily, it’s cyclical, and I have periods of greater tolerance. I take ketotifen to help stabilise mast cells, but I’ve learned (from reading and experience) that sugar (to which I’m addicted ) is inflammatory.
At the moment I’m able to eat more veg, so long as it’s peeled and in the low-to mid range of the salicylate list. So I avoid tomatoes, peppers, etc.I also have a theory that a fatty liver may make it harder to produce enzymes needed to metabolise salicylates. So being slim may possibly help my body to function better.

When doing the 5:2 BSD, are the 800 cal days, supposed to be 2 consecutive days in a row?
Thanks!! -

on 24 Jun 2017 at 21:54 in Welcome to the BSDHi StJames,
To be honest, it sounds like you’ve got it cracked. You’re doing really well! You’re not drinking much water. Apparently water helps to flush fat out in your pee, if I’ve understood the process rightly. So more water and a bit of salt (not too much) might not be a bad idea.
You might want to look at all the other threads on the site or even start one of your own. There’s a huge amount of advice and lots of helpful people here.
Weight loss will slow down, so don’t be surprised if you don’t lose as much in the second four weeks as in the first four. If you do want to start measuring carbs, websites like My Fitness Pal and Fat Secret can help you with that.
Good luck!

on 24 Jun 2017 at 21:53 in Starting the BSDFellow sugar addict here.
I’d say that most of my pre-diet eating was very healthy, but the problem is sugar and chocolate binges. When I start I can’t stop. I’ve cut out sugar and dieted more times than you can imagine. The first 3 days are hard, then I get into it and get that feeling “why can’t everyone do this”… until I fall off the wagon.
I started this diet 1 week ago, and today I was asked to make a lemon meringue pie for a party, so I made one for home too, as my daughter was coming home (and my skinny husband loves them too). So… I decided to have a tiny slivver, just to taste, and another… now my daughter gave me a tiny box with two Godiva chocolates, which I couldn’t resist.
Not too much, but I’ll be over my carb limit today. Hope I haven’t set myself back too much…
I think I’ll take Chasing Lions’ suggestion, and have water with lemon…

on 24 Jun 2017 at 21:41 in Fast 800Hi all, day 21 for me today and the result on the scale is good. 92.3 kegs. 5.7 kegs down (12 and a half pounds). So pleased with that. The last couple of days have been a struggle. I drank a couple of twinings fruit infusions and it really kicked off some serious food cravings. I managed to stay strong and not get stuck in to the chips and choc that are available in the vending machine at work. Sticking to black tea and water now.
Watching the food chanel doesn’t help either.Ruthydoo- i eat my meals at 11.30 -12.30 and between 5-6pm. I add a chopped boiled egg, 10mls of olive oil and 60g of cooked chicken, canned salmon or beef to my plate of veges ( mainly zucchini, mushroom, brocoli, red capsicum and tomato). I add garlic powder, salt and chilli powder.
I dont really vary this formula. Its kind of the most food for the least calories I could get. I feel as though I have “eaten” a decent enough meal though. Works for me and I know that everyone is different.
I hope everyone is feeling the benefits of the 800 cal pblood sugar diet.
My blood sugar levels are stabilizing now I am not eating sugar. Vile stuff with the harm it does. I see my GP next week and I am due for blood tests. So far am only diet controlled with my type 2 diabetes. Fingrs crossed I am under the magic 6.5mmols/l and don’t have to start tablets.
Have a good week everyone 😄😄😄 -

You’ll be invigorated now after a lovely pamper week ready for anything. I remember years ago when I was on Atkins and you have to be in ketosis – my daughter’s granny in law had specially baked cakes. Because I didn’t want to come out of ketosis – I politely declined. I have never forgiven myself for that. I just wish I was strong enough to keep it up after a minor indulgence. But well done you!

Like you said, we have these decisions to face from time to time and I had a very similar experience recently at my sons 30th birthday party where I made a conscious and informed decision about having a clotted cream and jam scone. I weighed it up and decided that I wanted to have it- it was the first cake to pass my lips for over six months and did I regret it- no! I had made a conscious decision to enjoy it and I did. I have let my self get fat and sugary and for this 8 weeks I’ll add 30 minutes of exercise 5 days a week to kick my metabolism a bit more and shift some of that ‘visceral’ fat round my internal organs.
My saviour was the omelette. A hot supper with a green salad for 200 calories. what’s not to like.

I have changed my life permanently from the diet, and will remain on it as I don’t need to eat any more than about 900 calories. My GP is astounded.

on 24 Jun 2017 at 19:31 in Fast 800I have done it for 7 weeks and my sugars are now normal, as are all my bloods. I want to lose more weight and get my fasting blood sugar down to 5.
I have done my diet with hardly any exercise apart from a 20 minute walk up a steep hill every day to my house. My GP is thrilled as I had blood sugar of 7.2mmol only 7 weeks ago!
I want to carry on as I have no desire to eat bread or startchy things. I don’t fall asleep at midday any more, I can eat my greek yoghurt and berries for breakfast and power through to my salad and salmon for lunch.
In short I am transformed and want to carry on. I am on about 900 calories a day and as a mid 40s desk bound analyst, this is probably enough food.
the doctor now wants me to experiment with 150 minutes of brisk cardio a week so i’m buying a cardio machine for my garage.
I will repost after 8 weeks to see if my waist is going to get down to 32 which is me target – I am still fat on the tummy which is bad.
in my view, carry on!

on 24 Jun 2017 at 19:19 in Fast 800Hi Wolfie, first of all getting to 800 – are you counting absolutely everything, milk in drinks, oil for cooking, every mouthful. If you are then dont worry, my doctor said as long as I wasn’t falling down in a dead faint. I tend to be around 700 but allow myself a piece of dark chocolate for a treat. Anyway, you have done so well you must be very happy.
As for carrying on. Well I am just about one year on this diet, I obviously have had breaks from the strict 800 like on holiday but never break the no bad carb rule and kept my blood glucose below 100 generally. Continue until you get to where you want to be but give yourself a break now and then. As long as you dont touch the carbs a break will do you no harm and will be easy to get back on track when you are ready. Keep on keeping on…

on 24 Jun 2017 at 19:18 in Welcome to the BSDEvening all. Thought I would fill you in on my day today. Thanks all for your support.
So, I walk into the hairdressers today where they all sang happy birthday as soon as I walked in and then I was presented with an Aveda gift bag containing a number of products including bath salts, stress relief cream and radiance stuff for my face and I was absolutely delighted. Apparently they all chipped in and I was so touched. Fast forward an hour and I’m sat there looking like some kind of lego person with chocolate coloured gunk on my hair when the singing started again and out they come with a glass of pink prosecco, a mini bottle and two iced fairy cakes with candles in them.
So what did I do?
Well, they all looked so pleased to be able to do this for me that I made a conscious decision to indulge. I did not feel coerced or pressured to do so but felt rather that there were always going to be situations like this and I needed to be rational and deal with it in a sustainable way. So, I had 100ml of the prosecco and one of the tiny cakes. I put the mini bottle (now half empty) in my bag and “donated” the other 🎂 to my hairdresser. As I knew where the products came from, I have logged on to mfp and added them in. They totalled 211 calories and 23.2 carbs. I came home (with fab hair may I say) and emptied the rest of the prosecco down the sink.
If I stick to my planned food for the rest of the day, I will come in at 945 calories and 84g of carbs. Yes it’s high but pretty good for a birthday food day. I feel really happy 😊 with the way it went, mainly because it was conscious eating, all logged and accounted for and it triggered no desire to continue “treating” myself for the rest of the day. Rather I came home and adjusted my food plan to mitigate the best I could without feeling deprived.
So, I will be interested to see your thoughts on what I did. I actually have no regrets. I had a great day and felt truly spoiled.
Out for breakfast tomorrow. Just going to plan exactly what I’m going to have. It’s easier to go bsd at brekkie than dinner and drinks and my friends are up for it too, so all good!
Have a great evening everyone!

Hi I started on21 Feb and have lost 38lbs so far and an amazing 11 inches from waist. Best of all reversed my diabetic diagnosis. I wouldn’t worry about veg as long as you keep to low carb veg. A massive spinach lettuce pepper salad nearly covers the 5 a day plus veg I.e. broccoli and cauli brings it well over the five a day and good for you too. Its very surprising how small a portion is one a day actually is.

on 24 Jun 2017 at 17:00 in Starting the BSDI also count/weigh everything and record it on an app. If I don`t I “forget” I ate it. It also gives a visual of what a portion should be (so freaking small!)
Today is my 1st day on this plan.

Found an e-book version of the first book (not the recipe book) for £2.50 so I have downloaded it to my laptop and phone, so I can refer to it. I like the science behind it, it makes total sense.
Do you all count the calories from your vegetables? it is just that I noticed on his 2 week meal plan they doesn`t seem equivalent to 5 a day.
On the plus side my fridge has never been so colourful.

I still have about 50 more pounds to go, and since this is working so well, I was wondering if I could just continue on with the 800 for a longer period of time.
I also have a problem even GETTING to 800! The average for this 8 wk period is 635. Is this ok?

on 24 Jun 2017 at 14:26 in Welcome to the BSDI have just done a quick Google search on IRRH – it appears to be a pre-cursor to T2 diabetes where the body responds to carbohydrates by over-producing insulin – thereby causing hypos. Nearly all the articles suggest that a low-carb diet such as the BSD is the best way to manage it. It is the excess of carbs that appears to trigger the excessive insulin production so reduced carbs will also result in fewer hypos.

on 24 Jun 2017 at 14:19 in Welcome to the BSDGood Morning!! (well, for me anyway.) It’s Saturday morning just shy of 9am. My Kev is off at work so we were up at 5am (he works 7am-7pm), he showered/dressed then we had breakfast–thick slice of tomato topped with a thin slice of ham, grated cheese and a poached egg with a side of broccoli and a vat of tea–it being Saturday I pushed the boat out and made up a packet of Hollandaise sauce and we each had a tablespoon over our egg–fucking lush!!! After Kev left for work I went back to the pot and scarfed down another spoonful. Fearing that it would continue calling my name throughout the day I have poured it into an ice cube tray and put it in the freezer so I can just use a cube when necessary. Now, old drunk Lizzie would have been eating Hollandaise popsicles but sober Lizzie knows better…….I hope.
Anyway, just before he left he sat back down to adjust his boot. I queried “too tight?”, “nope, the lace is too long and you don’t want it on the ground as it gets into blood and stuff.” bless my superhero paramedic guy.
So there were at the table in the kitchen and I was sitting with my eyes closed. Kev said “Liz–share?” “I’m in Tasmania and I’m gazing at a snow capped mountain….” “well okay then Liz.” I shared Erin’s post and we both sat for a moment and dreamed of such a paradise. The kettle started to whistle for his thermos that he takes to work and shocked me back to reality….after filling his thermos I stood by the kitchen door while our beloved Rosie (13 year old terrier poodle mix maybe–we got her at the pound so don’t really know) had a sniff about the garden and noticed that a squirrel had shit on one of the cushions that Kev had just put out on the garden furniture. That was my morning view. Squirrel shit. Bastard needs to be shot. Squirrel not Kev.
Best wishes and much love for a grand successful day living on our terms.

on 24 Jun 2017 at 13:36 in Welcome to the BSDHi, I’m not sure what the difference is between insulin resistant hypoglycaemia and type 2 diabetes. But the way of eating (diet has very negative connotations) will reduce your blood sugars, help to drain the fat from your liver, pancreas and other organs, and result in a healthier body. Have you read the book? If not, it really is the best place to star because MM explains in a simple but detailed way how to do the ‘diet’ and why it works. There are also lots of lovely, supportive people on these forums who can give you encouragement and the benefit of their own experiences.
Good luck

Well Julia you wont believe it but we went with a Scottish friend who lives here and her 4 sisters who flew over yesterday. They said they were tired and everywhere we went they said it was too noisy (there were about 30 bands playing all around the town). I think we found the only place to sit without music and they had one glass of wine each and wanted to go back home (not to Scotland of course). We were back home by 10 pm. No music, no dancing. On the plus side we took our own food so had salad with lamb burgers and pastry less quiche.
Weight stuck this morning and the weather is dull and overcast so might not get a swim, although I am sure I will. Slept so late I had a combined breakfast and lunch of cheesy baked beans and grilled mushrooms. Dinner is supposed to be pork goulash but I have run out of pork so trolled through the freezer and found 2 boxes of what looks like bolognaise or chilli, so it will be a surprise when it defrosts.
I reduced my insulin by one point last night getting it back to my pre-cruise amount (was 22, upped to 24 and now 23 units) and my BG this morning was still good at 86 or 4.7.
Have a good weekend everyone

The fortnight before I started the BSD was spent in Tasmania scoping out places to retire. Can’t afford much but will keep looking for my forever home. Will certainly visit next time I’m in the vicinity. More likely to be Tasmania than Canada to meet up with other lovely BSD’ers.
Tomorrow, Sunday, I need to work, but will walk there and back, starting the next 8 weeks as I mean to go on: more exercise and, when necessary, more calories in the form of protein, pulses or veg.
Stay well and enjoy the mountain.

You know – the thing that comes across loud and clear from these posts and also my personal experience is this. I can ‘stick to a diet’ and make good choices – if only I could be locked in a room for the duration I would be skinny in no time. OTHER PEOPLE ARE THE PROBLEM!

When I lost weight before I got sick of people telling me I didn’t look well, don’t lose any more, a little won’t hurt…….on and on a on……. sabotage! Only indulge if you want to , not because your you are being coerced. Great advice from Liz. …We also visited the north Island of NZ about six years ago and loved it too….in fact, that was the last time I managed to lose weight….we walked the Tongariro crossing and mistimed the bus back and literally ran (well ran/walked and stumbled!) the last 6km (fortunately downhill!!!) ….my face was beetroot red when I alighted the bus and I couldn’t speak for at least ten minutes! Started about 3/4 of the way towards obese in that band and ended about 1/4 of the way so definitely an improvement. Total weight loss about 8.5kg. New scales weigh about 2 kg too light.
So back into the BSD eve though I have a week of holiday coming up where I will not count cals but will be mindful.
Next scan in 8 weeks. In the meantime I need to up the exercise so I don’t lose any more muscle mass and improve the leanness of what I do have. Will allow myself up to 1000 cals on the days I exercise if I need then, but will eat protein, pulses or veg to fill up. I know I can do it.
Will keep on keeping on and enjoying everyone’s posts.

Susie3 welcome! Lots of upper body exercises you can do sat in a chair if you are getting frustrated having to avoid hip tendon pain.
Mouley I am similar age but much heavier and taller than you. Will be 44 in the autumn.
Done my walk and a run awaits once I’ve cut the grass and done the shopping.
Feeling quite virtuous this morning after the difficult week. And full of positivity again. Wishing everyone a successful weekend – they can be tougher than the routine of the week. -
Cathy the microbiome from what I understand is all the ecology in your intestines! So all the bacteria, good and bad etc. haven’t read very far into the book yet but a quick look at the foods and recipes show it’s very much what we are eating on BSD anyway, with the addition of fermented foods. I’m just finding all the science side of it interesting (unusual for me!) but it explains a lot of the symptoms and illnesses I’ve had in the past. I have IBS, as well as Rheumatoid Arthritis and am lactose intolerant, I never thought about there being a food connection with RA. Both the IBS and the RA have improved so much since I’ve started BSD.
I’m not vegetarian, more flexitarian. I have red meat maybe once per week/10 days, chicken slightly more often but the majority of my meals are vegetarian.
Lovely to read everyone’s progress 🙂 -

on 24 Jun 2017 at 10:45 in Starting the BSDSueBlue- I will check out the new guts book- am very ignorant about microbiome? To be honest though being a strict vegetarian for over 30 years and now a low carbatarian I don’t really want to embark on any further changes to my diet as I feel that this way of life is doable and is suiting me. I already feel “weird” in social eating situations and my colleagues remark and comment on my food choices! My latest interest is fasting and my hope is that if I ever get to a BMI of 25 I will start regular fasting as a way of keeping myself in check along, of course, with the principles of the BSD. When I started this on 8th January I had no idea whether it would work and I am thrilled to be 32 lb lighter.
Like you I will continue my journey in weeks and I still record my stats every Saturday. I am hoping that by October I will start my next phase of BSD- maintenance. keep going SueBlue- we’re doing great and I am impressed at our tenacity to keep on plodding on- lots of people would have given up by now. When I read about the BSD I assumed I would be at my goal weight after 8 weeks and I know that some people have done it that quickly but this has been a slow and steady journey for me and you and in many ways probably the best approach to weight loss.
Theodora- BMI of 21.2- amazing!!!!! You have done so well. My scales come with an app and this records the measurements on my iPhone/iPad- I am loving them- just wish I’d thought to get them in January! The scales were from Amazon and cost £29.99 Renpho –
Seasidenana- how are you doing?
Keep posting everyone- I love catching up with everyone’s progress.

on 24 Jun 2017 at 10:36 in Starting the BSDHi SueBlue and Clarinet Cathy, I started in late January, I think your cohort started earlier.
I am still plodding away, I have been facing lots of challenges not the least of which is my steely motivation seems to be softening. I have dabbled with non bsd foods of late – beer and mashed potato, one serving of each, a friend gave me home grown mandarins and I have been in to those as well. Every day I try to stick to 800 calories and invariably go over. I am on a slippery slope and I think it is reactionary due to my weightloss plateau in recent weeks. I am continuing on, have lost a good deal of weight, but have a long way to go yet.
Perhaps I need a change of menu, I tend to rely on the same kind of meals and I think I need to eat more vegetables.I need that strong resolute willpower that helped me so much in the beginning. Maybe I am beginning to self-sabotage. There is a lot to this journey and the psychological aspects can not be under estimated. To be kinder to myself, I have lost a massive amount of weight and stuck for the most part very well to the bsd principles.
A few out loud musings. Keep on going and let us all know about your trials tribulations and successes

It definitely works. So simple, but I often forget to do it.

Any thoughts? Thanks

on 24 Jun 2017 at 10:13 in Welcome to the BSDHey all!
Hope everyone’s doing well and seeing those numbers go down.
I finish 4th week tomorrow with a total loss of 28lbs which I’m thrilled about and looking forward to some more losses over the next 4 weeks (would love for it to drop in the same way as the first 4)
I have noted the standard slow down on weight loss but wondered if anyone had any tips to speed it along? Iv recently started quite a physical job so I’d imagine that will encourage additional water weight which once flushes from my body will hopefully lower the scales but what else can I do to move this along?
Kept to my 800 cals or a little less a day, no hunger pangs at all, drinking 3/4 litres of water a day, I havnt been measuring my carbs as much but given the types of foods I’m eating they are defiantly less that 50g. My usual fasting period is between dinner at around 6pm and my next meal at 2pm the following day. Any tips would be amazing! Thanks

Yes I’m still plodding along Cathy 🙂 Week 24 starts for me on Monday. I haven’t done as well as you have but I’ve lost a total of 9.5kg (21 lb) and 33cm from my bust-waist/hips.
I’m no longer counting in rounds, just weeks. I still have another 18.5kg to go, but I guess I’m 1/3 of the way there now. I’ve broken it down into 5kg increments, so I’m working on losing 3.5kg to get down to my next goal at the moment. This is an important one for me as it will mean my BMI will go from being Obese to Overweight (yes I’m excited at the prospect of being overweight lol).
January seems so long ago, I can’t believe I’ve been able to stick to this WOE so long. I’ve had the best results ever over the last 2 weeks, and what is working for me is 800 calories on 5 days and 1000 on 2 days.
I’ve started reading Dr Mosely’s Clever Guts book – absolutely fascinating! I think my microbiome was partly to blame for my weight gain and then slow weight loss. I can’t help wondering if the 2 1/2kg loss I’ve had this past 2 weeks is because my microbiome is now in better shape (because of all the BSD foods I’ve been eating) and now weight loss is happening.
Whatever the reason I’m happy! Just hope I can continue to lose.
In the Clever Guts book Dr Mosely says if you can maintain for a year you are likely then to be able to keep the weight off for good, as your body accepts your new lower weight. Maintenance is still a long way off for me of course, but I find all the research and info so interesting 🙂 -
