Positives for today (in fact last week for some of them 😁)

    1. Mum has just visited and helped me clothes declutter, another 10 bags to charity shops, this time a combination of those that would still ‘do’ at my last year clear out, and some of the longer term big stuff that had just missed the cut last time. Finally I am starting to feel that an organised wardrobe is coming together.
    2. Apart from one biscuit today (still within my calories target) I have been keeping on keeping on so well that I am a fraction of a pound away from a stone loss in just 8 days. More of the same next week, though increasing calories just keeping carbs low and throwing in the occasional FMD.
    3. Booked my holiday for 17th Feb in sunny (hopefully) Cornwall 😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁

  • I’m back again., greyhoundgirl. I agree with Mixnmatch here, about the
intermittent fasting as a good way to start, trying to only eat in an
8 hour window. Is there a specific reason why you don’t want to
get into a healthy BMI range of 25, or an ideal weight right in the
middle of a healthy BMI. When I started down this road I had a
BMI of 44. Today it is 21.22, considered an “ideal” weight for a
5’7″ woman. I’ve been in maintenance for 9 months, and the
only changes that I’ve made is to increase the amount of the
healthy foods that I’ve been eating right along. We eat wild
fish 2-3 times a week, organic chicken, organic greek yogurt,
organic eggs, and steamed spinach or cruciferous vegetables
every day. Our healthy fats include avocado, small portions of
nuts and seeds, and raw cacao nibs. We like our proteins clean
and lean, so items like sausages and bacon aren’t part of our
diet. This is mostly predicated upon being very careful about
animal fat, though, because my husband has advanced coronary
artery disease. That is the only reason why we eliminate cheese
from our diet. In keeping with this diet, cheese is perfectly
acceptable to this WOE in measured quantities. There is a lot
of evolving research indicating this isn’t a problem, but for
now we choose to err on the side of caution. Prior to the BSD
we both had high chloresterol levels, and now our blood results
indicate “optimal levels” for both of us. Please let us all know
how you get on. There is a wealth of knowledge and experience
on the forums, and it is our pleasure to share it with new members!

  • Hi all – I hope everyone is doing well today.

Jules – I usually have berries and yogurt if I’m craving something sweet. I hope you’re managing to fight through it – if not then maybe plan to have something sweet tomorrow. A piece of fruit, low calorie hot chocolate, maybe even a biscuit. Then when tomorrow comes – see how you feel. You might not want it then.

Izzy – that sounds like a good strategy to avoid spending money on unhealthy foods. Good luck with it – you know your body feels so much better when you are sticking to the BSD, so try to focus on that when you get that urge to overeat.

LittleAnne – I hope the decorating goes well.

Welcome Dory – this is a really friendly group. I look forward to hearing your updates.

MixnMatch – you’ve done really well. I’m envious of your size 8 jeans

ClarinetCathy – I’m impressed with the fasting. It’s not something I’ve ever tried and I’m not sure I could. If it works for you that’s great.

I’ve had a relaxing day – not done any steps as I’ve been at home all day. But it’s Monday tomorrow and I’ll start pounding the pavement. I weigh myself weekly on a Monday so I’ll report back on how well I’ve done this week.

  • Fasting has its own health benefits, but if you want to do it without restricting calories then a 16:8 intermittent fasting pattern is probably best for you. Try to do it most days, and just have an 8 hour period when you take in calories, out of that period just stick to water or herb tea, black coffee etc. Essentially that means usually two meals, and either an 8:00am – 4:00pm window with no food/drink in the evening, or more usually a 12:00pm – 8:00pm or 2:00pm – 10:00pm (if drinking in the evening, wine has calories after all πŸ˜‰) Let us know how you get on. Also try our sister forum Clever guts, with the same log in details, it is a lot quieter than here but has some very useful threads for the gut biome rehabilitation side of the way of eating.

Don’t worry about the odd glass of red wine, very Mediterranean 😁😁😁😁😁😁😁 There is a whole section on this forum for this Med style although the vast majority of posters come here looking for weight loss so it is fairly quiet, there are a growing number of us who have reached our target weights, in some cases years ago, and come to discuss the continuing healthy way of eating so you will find people to talk to. Come and join in on the maintainers thread ‘After reaching…’ etc for non weight loss related chat, although some of our maintainers do actually lose weight sometimes almost accidentally.

Congratulations, ladies, on your workouts today! It’s great to

    Hi Allie

One of the most striking things I found out doing the Fast 800 (or so) was that my body responded in really weird and unpredictable ways and just to go with the flow. As I think I said at the time, I wouldn’t recommend the “short, sharp carb-shock” technique as part of BSD but it worked for me on three (?) occasions.

The other thing was that my tastes really changed and things I’d never been bothered about became core parts of my diet (fennel, for instance.)

  • Hi Greyhound Girl,

    Welcome and enjoy the groups

I started last Monday, my tummy is much less bloated and feeling so much better in myself. Eating much more protein, and for me, who does not cook, it has made me look at food and the way I interact with it differently .

There are so many lovely helpful people on this site, it is great.

    Good luck

Oh Allie, you have both been through the mill! Every cloud has a silver lining, looks like you have found it.

Great CC to hear about walk, sorry about blisters, horrible things.

Hubby let off at the moment as jet lagged, saying that he had the same lunch as me Portobello mushroom, salmon and poached egg, he then had a slice of Christmas cake which is fine by me.

Just been walking on treadmill at gym and done one and a half miles in 25 minutes, fast walk. I did have to stop once, totally worn out now.
Have a great evening folks 🎀🎧

A positive day here, just been for a hike & I have the blisters to prove it, oops!

Candlelight, how is your husband liking the food?

Allie, that really is a transformation story for some very scary reasons but as you said, not a tale of woe but a tale of rebirth for you both! I believe that if we let them our scars can show strength & grace & oh boy yours definitely do!

Today’s song is ‘Over the Rainbow’ my favourite version is by Israel Kamakawiwo’ole. May he rest in peace, but what a gift he left behind.

If you just do the Med style, so just cut out processed food, and the ‘white stuff’ which is white bread, rice, pasta potatoes and sugar, limit fruit and starchy veg like root vegetables and eat plenty of healthy fat, but don’t count calories and eat to satiety then any visceral fat should clear which may result in a slight weight loss but probably not a significant change of shape. If you do a food diary now to work out how many calories you are currently eating and try to stick to that as well on the Med style diet, you should get healthier without getting too thin.

  • Hi thanks for the welcome, i was reading the books and was just a little worried that weight loss was predominant. don’t get me wrong my body is no temple!!!!! but its and ok size πŸ™‚ so maybe not the phase 1 and 2 is that what you mean? clean my system and relearn how to eat well, i never eat chocolate but do have a sweet tooth so that needs to be sorted, i LOVE crisps so never buy them because i become a gremlin demon !!!!!!!!. more veg, more variety, fish and lean meats, should i still fast / reduce intake for a couple of days a week?

  • Hi, Greyhoundgirl, and welcome to the forum πŸ™‚ If you aren’t
interested in losing weight, have you considered simply adopting
a very clean mediterranean diet that includes more rainbow
vegetables and fruit than is recommended on the Fast800, and
introducing some of the gut friendly fermented food like raw,
unpasteurized kimchi or sauerkraut, or kefir to correct any
disorder you may have in your gut biome?
Wising you improved health, whatever you decide…

  • Hi, bought the books and have read them, first hurdle, not interested in losing weight as ok with that, I am female, 6ft tall, BMI 27 and around 73kgs, but OMG in the last month my tummy has been really painful and upset. 52 years old and yes (not wanting to overshare) but things are already ‘changed’ but I feel really quit unwell so decided to get my life in order, I don’t believe that there is a sinister underlying problem, I am active and love to cook so happy to do whatever it takes to make the lifestyle changes for a better gut and happy me, advise, encouragement and anything else please, but I am a bit concerned that weight loss will make this difficult as I don’t really want that. any ideas anyone?

    Hi JRC

I took the view that carbs would be my challenge, so pitched for around 40g a day or less. I am 6’3″ and with a heavy frame and carry a fair bit of muscle mass from my days playing rugby to a decent standard. My logic was, and I took some flak from the purists for it, was that 800 could only be a general target as the impact on a five foot woman or a six-foot bloke couldn’t reasonably be the same.

To be honest with a target of 800-1000 and the need to actually eat a reasonable amount, the level of fat was automatically limited and I took a fairly lax approach to it. As I increased calories in maintenance I did, and still do favour protein over fat.

I used the UK RFU Veterans (i’m 53) strength and conditioning regime – it used to be online but seems to have disappeared – and really never had too much bother with tiredness.

Hi Beth – just wanted to offer another welcome to you. As sunshine-girl said, you did great last year and using the BSD, I’m confident you can ‘get off the rollercoaster’ and achieve your goals. You are right, there is a bit to learn and get your head around when first starting out on the BSD. We are all so used to the low fat/high carb message, getting used to the high fat/low car one can be tricky, but you’ll get there.

Join any thread on the forum, you feel has some relevance for you, as we are a friendly and inclusive bunch, but yell if you have any questions or find yourself struggling, someone is bound to respond.

Finally, best wishes for every success in your endeavour and we’ll look forward to reading about your progress.

Neat hat Izzy. I’m sure I used to have one like it a few years back, but no idea what happened to it. Nonna M, I’m sure you can achieve whatever you want for yourself. Congrats caronl – you must be buzzing with that result and you deserve to be very proud to get your BMI in the right range. Lovely long post V, good to have you back.

Preparing the pig trotters proved more challenging than I’d thought and singeing the hairs off proved to be the only effective way to get rid of them – stinky! But anyway they are in the slow cooker and the smells are much nicer now. Hoping to end up with a nice gelatinous dish to eat with some veggies later.

    My positives for today:

    1) Slept like a baby on our new mattress topper last night.
    2) Created a new cocktail to put in our village news letter for February –
Be My Valentine: 30ml Sake, 20ml Gin, 10ml Lychee Liqueur, 10ml Lime Juice, 5ml Rosewater and a good dash of Angostura Bitters, Shaken together with a generous amount of ice and strained into a chilled glass.
    3) Enjoyed a brunch of scrambled egg and homemade gravlax – made the curing paste with tequila and vanilla this time.

Will let you all know how the pig trotters turn out. Have a great Sunday everyone.

Good to know you have decided to give the BSD a go and that you are already seeing some really excellent progress, JR. Hopefully you are feeling better for changing to this way of eating and you will continue and be reporting further good results soon. May be think about joining some of the other threads, as there is a lot of experience and wisdom out there. Every four weeks there is a challenge thread – the newest one has only recently started and I’m sure you’d still be welcome to join (think it is called ‘Keeping Carb at Bay Over Valentines Day’.

Good morning, everyone. I really enjoy starting my day with a
quote, a song, or a few positive thoughts, so thank you all.

CC, thank you for your kind thoughts. “I Will Survive” may very
well apply. I shared the events of 2016 with you, but 2017 was
an even more eventful year πŸ™‚ In Feb. o/h was diagnosed with
colon cancer, and during his hospitalization for colorectal
surgery, he had a massive post operative bleed that almost
cost him his life, along with a second heart attack and subsequent
implantation of a defibrillator in his chest. Today he has recovered
and is back to teaching a full course load (professor). This isn’t
meant to be a personal tale of woe, however, because there is a
message of hope in it. Prior to the BSD, I was morbidly obese,
too exhausted to function, and I couldn’t have made it down a
long hospital corridor without the aid of a wheelchair. I certainly
would have been too disabled to spend 3 weeks in a hospital doing
all I expected of myself with respect to my husbands care. The
BSD is what made that all possible. Avoiding carbs/sugar? A
mere trifle, and no match for this lady πŸ™‚
How wonderful to have a trained voice! I enjoy all types of music,
with the exception of country/western and rap, which could
possibly drive me to madness πŸ™‚

    Have a wonderful week, everyone!

Hi again, CR! JulesMaigret does have a great story. Reading
his “replies created” might be a great help to you.
CR, there are no hard and fast rules, other than to remember
that this is a low carb-moderate protein-high fat diet. Many do
very well on <50gm of carbs a day. How I chose to set my macros
was by trial and error. Approx. 2 months in I hit an 18 day plateau,
and it was necessary to go very low carb to break it. Fat is a very
necessary element to the diet, it helps to keep hunger at bay
as well as facilitates fat burning. Too much protein get stored
as glycogen in the muscles, and what we want to be burning for
fuel is our fat stores, not stored glycogen. Everyone begins this
with concerns over loss of muscle mass, which is why I found
the protein formula particularly help when LindaA it. I’m not a
gym afficionado however. I’m sure someone who is will come
along and share their experience with you!
Very best of luck to you and your wife. This WOL really works!

well time for my weeks roundup.

    Monday went well

    Tuesday- weds not so much

    Thurs- ok

    Friday OK

    Sat/sun all ok

So On Tuesday I had a counselling session booked so I think it triggered my need to emotionally eat, however the only reason I was able to give in to that was because I had taken my purse with me to get cash to pay the counsellor. Soooo I have another counselling session on Feb 6th and what I will do is make sure I have the correct money the night before so I won’t have a means of spending at work. I clearly don’t have the self control in those moments, but controlling the means I have at the time is all I can do.

I only work 5hrs/day so I don’t take a meal break, I usually bring some nuts to nibble, having money to hand was my downfall.

Of course I then did the typical, start tomorrow thing, then the next day, start tomorrow… By Thursday I was back on track and Friday I had a planned deviation which is still not following BSD but is controlled as I was meeting a friend. I decided this time to allow those days to find balance within BSD and tailor this to fit my life, desires and needs. I find if I stick to allowing non-bsd food just for the duration of the cafe (oe whatever) visit that I have no trouble jumping back on BSD. It’s only when I go off the rails like on Tuesday. I only have a planned time with friends like that once every few weeks or so anyway so it isn’t overly regular. It’s just unfortunate that this week it means there have been 3 days out of whack.

I’ll be weighing in at the end of the month and my target is kept very small (4lb’s/month) so I know I’ll still make it. I’m playing the long term game.

Aside from the food I’ve managed to keep my daily steps at 10k or above so happy enough with that (they drop at the weekend but 5/7 is good enough for me) Gently does it here.

I’ve kept busy making beaded bracelets (which will be for sale at a local shop soon) and also this year I’ve given myself a sewing challenge.

in 2018 I will but NO NEW clothes. I will either make my own clothes, buy/repurpose old or 2nd hand clothes. It was an incentive to give myself motivation to try making clothing as so far I love sewing but have never attempted clothes, just bags, purses, coasters, keyrings that sort of thing. So this week brought my first pair of simple trousers, with an elastic waist so not the height of fashion but they fit well and are comfy so I was pleased, and yesterday I made a hat, which I am too excited about. I love my hat lol.

Well that’s my weeks round up, except to say that last week I tried using the almond flour recipe I had for breadsticks to make chicken curry pasties and it did work but the ‘pastry’ was a bit too cheesy for my liking. This would have worked ok with perhaps a bacon filling, but I used our normal cheese which is quite strong. I think if I used a mild cheese with less of a strong flavour then maybe it would have worked ok.

    this was the bread/pastry recipe

Hi Mary – our posts crossed – I’m away to do some food shopping – we’re having a belated Burns night celebration tonight (no non-BSD food for me, though). Good to hear the cold’s going and the sun is shining – catch up with you soon. x

  • Up another 200g, but feel it must still be in transit, as it were.

No food for a good 16 hrs. Broke fast with 2 egg omelette with spinach, courgette, few tomatoes and30g cheddar and lots of salt and pepper (olive oil measured not butter to fry). Pudding of 1 bit of 90% choc and 1teaspoon peanut butter with added flax seeds. Coming in at 435 cals, 7g carbs. Planning on chicken dinner with veg later.

Didn’t have cream in coffee today, going off animal fat a bit, enjoying that whilst I can.

Off to rehearsal, no food I care to snack on there, so will have a good gap before dinner (which husband will cook).

    KOKO you’all. Xx

In that last episode, I was interested to hear Gary Taubes highlighting the 1970’s work of John Yudkin on the negative impact of sugar on our diet. I remember when I first moved into the health sector in the mid-80’s how much he was still being vilified for his research. It made me wonder if he lived long enough to see the turnaround in views. Quite sad really.

  • Hello again, just to qualify what I said about ‘if that is what it is’, sometimes those symptoms can be something else like a drop in blood pressure. Your diet looks okay and, yes, you should cut out the fizzy drinks as there is lots of evidence that they increase hunger by making the body think it is getting something sweet and then when it doesn’t get the sugar kick it sets up a craving pattern. There are lots of cold drinks you can have, especially water. Try it with a sprig of mint and a couple of slices of cucumber, I have mine with pure lemon juice (out of the lemon not a bottle) or buy an infuser so you can put in your own fruit like slightly crushed raspberries or strawberries for a fruity taste with few calories.

  • hi beth, I know that story when I look back on photos of my in my late teens and early twenties. I even saw a photo when I was 13 and my mum used to tell me I was fat, I wasn’t at all. Just shout up if you need help or use the search engine at the top of the page. Good luck. By the way, you did brilliant losing all that weight (over 100lbs), I am sure you can do it again.

I’ve plateaued so far this week – no weight loss as yet. It’s pretty typical of how it goes for me; I lose over 3-5 days – a 1lb a day – and then plateau for up to 2 weeks (even 3 now and again) so I’m just carrying on.
    Have a good day/evening/night everyone.

Hi everyone, weight down again but not quite back to what I was last Tuesday (7.5lb loss now 7.25lb loss). Hoping by Tuesday I will be back down so it will be a no loss week but also hoping for half a pound. BG is still going great at 4.3 but leaving insulin at 26 units until it stabilizes and until weight loss picks up again. By the way, I am still on Dry January – only 4 nights to go.

Have a good rest of the weekend.

hi greyhound girl, sounds like your name matches your figure. You are right, you wont have massive losses in the long term but you dont want to lose 100lbs or even 50lbs. I am in your category of being just 2 stone overweight but I am diddy at 4″ 11′. I have just restarted the full 8 week plan and in week one I lost 4lbs, weeks 2 stuck, week 3, 3lbs, week 4 so far stuck. When I first did this back in 2016 I lost 13lbs in the 8 weeks. The first week will be mainly fluid and then you get into proper fat burning. Also, by week 3 I had lost 5 inches from my waist. Having said that, it is still the best weight loss plan going and just cutting out or seriously down on bad carbs you will be doing your body a big favour.

    Good luck.

  • MIxnmatch- you’ve worked hard to get a stone off in two weeks- that’s amazing! Size 8 jeans too! Wow.

I have decided to do one extended fast each month and today is the day! I don’t seem to be able to lose the 2lb I put on at Christmas and keep it off so am up and down, up and down . This might help to boost my metabolism. Hopefully if I am able to fast for 36-42 hours I will see my weight back down to less that 133 lb. I’ve fasted before and succeeded but it’s been a while so here’s hoping my resolve is strong today! Got black coffee, a variety of teas and plenty of water to keep me hydrated.

Looking forward to weigh in on Tuesday.
