on 11 Sep 2016 at 20:15 in Starting the BSDThanks everyone for the advice. I am going to try and stick to the 8 week plan in the book as I work long hours and don’t have a lot of time for planning meals etc. Think I am going to struggle with no bread/crisps or chocolate which are all my weaknesses ๐

Sorry to hear your struggling Natalie but I agree that Mondays do mark a new start. Weekends are always difficult, I tend to kick back and relax and think ‘what can I eat to reward myself?’!! Invariably have lunch out, loaded with carbs. But have done really well the last 2 weekends (only on my 2nd week, so haven’t become complacent yet). That’s my problem, and many others from what I have read. You merrily go along, strong and confident on your new diet (and I’ve tried many, many different diets!) and you think one biscuit won’t hurt, and it doesn’t appear to, so you have another and then you find that you haven’t got it under your belt as you’d thought. But writing on here is giving me such a boost and helping me face my mistakes. Writing therapy. Of course this diet helps you lose weight so quickly, (found my diet book from earlier this year and it took me 10 weeks to lose 10lbs and I have already lost 9lbs on the BSD!). I am telling myself regularly that this is for my future health, I want to be able to fend for myself well into old age, lord willing! Of course long gone is my PMS. My
daughter (39 years old) says she tries to replace hers with PMA (positive mental attitude), but
raging hormones are definitely the devil’s work!! Have you thought about doing the 5:2, 4:3
or 6:1 diet on your bad weeks? If you could it would possibly make you feel more in control of your weight.
Well today for brunch I had 1/2 an avocado, 1 fried egg, mushrooms and 1 slice fried
halloumi. Dinner was Harvest Vegetable Pie then greek yogurt and blueberries. 5 coffees for
the day and loads of water. I am really enjoying the recipes, they are really tasty and so quick and easy to make. Have done lots of sorting out again today, am finally getting on top of this place. Trying to fit all our belongings in a tiny 2 bedroom bungalow has taken a great deal of throwing out. But the Konmari method came to my rescue. Clearing clutter makes you feel so good and I love it! Well bfn xx Have a good ‘1st day’tomorrow xx -

Hi everyone, I am starting (again) tomorrow 12th September. I have about 14-21lbs to loose. I have signed up for a 10k locally at close of October, which means I am running 2-3 times a week to get fitter. I also need to do some RT to build muscle and tone up. Good luck everyone – we can do this and maintain a lighter weight too as a lifestyle. Carbs are not so hard to reduce, a lot of it is habit. In 5 months it’s my birthday ๐

Happy Monday! starting weight for this week is 130.05 – only a .4 loss, but not worried about that as a loss is a loss. From the start of this I have lost 7.6kilos, so I am stoked!! Now to work on the next 10 kg. As to that, I am going to add in something a little different for a couple weeks to see what happens. Am going to add in the 5:2! This is where you eat ‘normally’ for 5 days and only have (I think) 500 cals the other 2 days. Essentially breakfast and dinner is what I am going to do on those 2 days. I did try this before and didn’t really work for me, but now that I have cut down to 800 calories and really watching my sugar intake I’m thinking the 5:2 will be a real goer, but time will tell. Still working on the walking, and doing the 1 level of stairs at work each day, so little by little am making a difference for myself.
Onwards and downwards!!

on 11 Sep 2016 at 18:34 in Welcome to the BSDOoh Yowser I’ve just googled them and yes I remember my nan had some one Xmas when I was a little kid, and they came in 4 in a cracker and you snapped them into 4 very nice, never seen them though to buy them, but what you could do is just dip your finger in some salt that may suspend the craving, but I know there’s nothing like crackers butter and cheese, but enough of that I want to be healthy more, I will indulge when I get to target at Xmas. Phewww best not think about that one.

The black rice cat one, I actually have a maneki that looks like that, some are cuter than the traditional sorts. I saw a bento box thing the other week on a site, so that’s going on my Christmas list. They also had other maneki things I haven’t seen in the UK before, including a mug! https://www.japancentre.com/en/products/5973-lucky-cat-bento-lunch-box-with-fork-black
I have no idea what it is Antigone, it just feels like I’m drunk, the head rush and staggering, but without the inherent stupidity. Almost like when you’ve been on fairground ride after fairground ride and you feel disorientated. I fell asleep in my chair AGAIN. Five hour lunches? The French know how to lunch, that’s all I’m saying ๐ The food all sounds lovely.
They all had their KFC takeaway, not one of them offered me so much as a bite and Mr Lucky had his chicken tikka salad. When it came down to it I couldn’t face salad so I ate my sausages cold off the baking tray. I now have killer heartburn. They’re out playing manhunt at the moment, so we’ll sing Happy Birthday in a bit when they’re in, then they can have cake, and go for their baths and showers. Mr Lucky is ironing all the uniforms ready for this week. A man who finds ironing therapeutic = keeper.

Hi Lynne
Thankyou so much for taking the trouble to post all that, yes the good results of health are a great motivator, I’m okay again now I’m back on track. I have another 71 lbs to go I’m 5 ft 6in so not sure what target will be realistic for me, but I’m thinking about 10st 10lb, but I’m flexible. I find it interesting how many seem to drop of at the eight week point despite having lots more to loose. But I have your example in mind to help keep me focused, this forum has been so unbelievably helpful. To the point I never feel like I am doing this plan alone.
I will be very interested to see you go into maintenance phase, ooh how wonderful does that sound. Hope you are having a lovely evening. And a happy maintaining week ahead.
Love Jan ๐๐๐ -
Yes good idea, we have a ‘carb cupboard’ in our house where bread, crackers, cereal, crisps, biscuits and sweets live. It’s contents have reduced in the last couple of months but I’m not allowed to get rid of it completely!!

I give a wry smile when I see all the low fat dairy products filling the shelves and wonder just how long before the tide turns. In my small local supermarket the 0% fat premium greek yoghurt has just been joined by it’s normal counterpart- I’m convinced it’s a sign!

Hi Wannabe healthy!
As well as the great suggestions from Tizzie may I suggest that if your family members have snacks…you put them away in a special cupboard or tin…well out of temptation!! and enlist your family’s help to stay on plan. It gets easier after the first few days as your appetite will decrease. Good luck๐
-
If you like cocoa nibs, one of my current favourite things to go with the Greek yoghurt is a teaspoon of nibs, and a teaspoon of cocoa powder stirred in well. You can add a few chopped nuts as well, or instead of the nibs, but I find it addresses the choccy cravings very well for not a lot of extra calories.

Wow Stewart, how wonderful! Thank you for inspiring me x

Hi Wannabe and DKendall – I’ve just replied to newbeginnings on the Welcome… forum – I’ll be starting (again) tomorrow too.

There as different strategies you can try.
I sometimes have the same as everybody else except I avoid or substitute the starchy carbs. eg cottage/shepherds pie- they have mash I have cauliflower mash, cooked breakfasts- I avoid toast and have extra mushroom instead, pasta dishes- I use courgetti instead of pasta.
Sometimes I choose to have something entirely different, especially if its going to be something the kids don’t like. I’m also trying to introduce them to more vegetables in their diets but it’s a very gradual process!
I generally find that I can pick a low carb option when going out too, so far the only time I lapsed big style was having fish and chips by the seafront whilst on holiday.
It’s not nearly as difficult as you might imagine if you plan ahead. Just weigh and measure where possible as it is very easy to go over your calorie limit especially at the beginning before your appetite has adjusted. Finally, clear food away quickly including anything left on plates- no picking! -
Hope you are soon better Lucky. It’s not labyrinthitis is it? I have coacoa nibs too Frog. They are interesting – nice in a salad. MFP had a recipe for avocado chocolate peanut butter pudding – I am having acpbp cravings now! Just home from a 5 hour lunch with french neighbours…I tried. I really tried! I drank loads of water but still had 2 glasses of wine and 2 kirs! Food included a smoked salmon and asparagus tart (who can leave pastry…crisp, buttery, light and fluffy), barbequed brochettes WINNNER! Potatoes in a lovely sauce (I picked the smallest one honestly), cheese (tiny piece and no bread) and a cassis sorbet (SUGAR!). It’s torture and no mistake!
Bon courage mes amis – the weekend is almost over! -

on 11 Sep 2016 at 17:22 in Welcome to the BSDHi newbeginnings and welcome! I should be back on board tomorrow after a week off. I had done almost 3 weeks before disaster (literally) struck and it really does work.
Planning is key. I found what worked best for me was half a dozen snack/combos that were easy, quick and portable and that I knew would combine for a good balance; there’s lots of fabulous recipes on here but I just needed BSD for dummies! For me it was hummus, Greek yoghurt, avocado, feta, peppers, passata/tomatoes, mushrooms, coconut oil, and miso paste. Frozen summer berries gave me the occasional sweet treat. The first few days are hard but it does get easier after that. All the best with your new beginnings! -
Im going to finish reading the book today and hopefully start tomorrow.

I did wonder about Bravissimo. The one that was recommended to me was Rigby & Peller. I know them by reputation but it would mean a trip to Harrogate or London, and their products are very expensive. Bravissimo is a lot closer ๐

+1, I work with a Greek guy and he buys his yogurt in Aldi – apparently better quality and far lower prices than the local Greek Deli!

Hi Thistime
best thing is to look at one of the online calorie counters – some have premium services but they all have free to use options I hate the name, but have decided I like FatSecret best, easy to use, UK site, and not too many ads.
It will help you keep track of calories and carbs – calories is relatively easy without one of these, but once you start trying to track multiple items, it gets a bit harder. I did manage successfully on a spreadsheet, but its a bit more effort (I’m writing this with a program about data security on in the background, and getting a bit paranoid!)Baked beans are ok-ish, a bit carby. I used to have them for breakfast to replace toast when I started BSD. Do go for the low sugar variety. My trick was to mix the can with a can of plain haricot or flagolet beans – because the ratio of beans to sugary sauce increases, its less carby and sugary overall. I don’t bother now because I have them a lot less, but I did fancy them a week or so ago – a portion size per the labelling is half a can, but I find 100g is sufficient – half a can is around 150 calories – but 23 g carbs

on 11 Sep 2016 at 13:00 in Welcome to the BSDHi Imogen
I did have a problem that a few weeks ago when I really started increasing my levels of exercise.
I really dislike taking painkillers, but I found taking a couple really did help, I think I only took them once or maybe twice – I can’t remember now whether I took asprin, paracetamol or Ibuprofen – but it workedThe other thing that was truly wondrous was when I had the problem while staying in Edinburgh, and didn’t want to spend the entire week inside the travelodge with the sound of wailing bagpipes drifting in from outside all day, I found an amazing sports massage therapist – half an hour of pure wizzardry, and it wasn’t particularly expensive!
I usually only have massage as a treat or destress/relaxation, than to address a specific problem, but she was truly amazing.
And she was based just a few doors along the road from the tea shop that had won prizes for best cakes in scotland, baker of the year…. but that’s another story. -
If you have any Greek, Turkish or Cypriot supermarkets near you – likely to have walls of unflavoured, un-defatted thick creamy yogurt – I was amazed, and planning to go back when I next need some cottage cheese.
I did mention it to a Turkish friend though – apparently he buys all his in Lidl ๐
He did assure me that it was made by Turks in Germany (Would definitely only have Turkish yogurt, even if most “Greek” yogurt in supermarkets has been no closer to Greece than my cat)Unintended consequence – my new t shirts fit on the clothes airer stretched flat with space on either side, rather than being bunched up, so no creases!
-
and waving arms would definitely be a stretch too far for an egg mould!
CHOCOLATE HIT!!!
after posting on here about chocolate this morning, I remembered that I had a bag of cacao nibs in the cupboard – never tried them before, bought them earlier in the year when I tried a ‘no sugar’ diet.
Interesting -it’s not like chocolate at all, but does have a sort of chocolate taste. Interesting
5g is quite a lot, but only 32 calories and 2.5 carbs -

on 11 Sep 2016 at 12:28 in Welcome to the BSDBlike41 well done. Two weeks in is a good feeling and your results are great. Snoop well done on all points. It took me some time to figure out how to get my carbs down.
Yesterday’s totals:
Calories: 797
Carbs: 44
Weight: 163lbs
-4 since start
Got a run in yesterday and managed daily exercise since last Sunday. -
Hi thistime
so sorry to hear about your son – that must have been a really tough time to attempt dieting.I must admit, eggs are my biggest standby – and although I’ve generally been quite good about not too much fruit, I bought a delicious box of cherries without checking the carbs. And ate all of them yesterday.
Do you have a spiraliser – great for salad and veg as ‘pasta’ – I don’t think I’ve ever eaten so much courgette (I bought a very small one, so larger veg like butternut squash delicious spiralised, but not in mine!)
Do you like fish? that’s always an option, and although I’ve not made it, there’s a recipe on this website for a lasagne with courgette layers instead of pasta. There’s another thread that started running recently – 2nd 8 weeks starting Tuesday August 30th, that is mostly people, including me that did eight weeks or so and then drifted into maintenance/holidays/non BSD eating generally & have renewed commitment!
Good luck this time around!
