    Hi Izzy,
Like you, I find it easier to stick to the diet when I’m at work – tearing around like a blue-arsed fly I don’t have time to think about food, and I mostly manage to avoid the communal biscuit tin at coffee time. Home is worse, I know what’s in the cupboards, the fridge, and my willpower can disappear in a puff! I’ve been through a few weeks where I’ve let things slide a bit, the motivation has disappeared a bit now that I’m at a weight where I feel comfortable, but I still have a few more pounds to lose before I reach my ultimate target (that’s 9.5stone) so I’m safely within the healthy section of the BMI. Again, like you, I think the BSD is a very maintainable regime, just need that 2nd wind to spur me on.

First few days felt really hungry, this eased a bit through the week, but still there.
I weed for Britain for the first 2-3 days which is probably most of my weight loss; I had oedema of the lower leg which seems to have gone? Not sure but maybe sugar aids the body to retain fluid, there is some research that suggest high sugar and salt intake can cause water retension?
Even though my wife is sceptical she has started cooking again, as she has been of food for some time, due to one of her migraine medications has that side effect.
She is cooking low cal meals, her normal Chilli/ Bolognese, curries etc. are skinnier than those in the BSD book, the big difference is my wife can get fantastic balanced flavour, where I cannot? A skill passed to her from her grandmother, who learnt her skills whilst in India as an Army wife pre WWII
So even though my wife remains sceptical she is helping me anyway?

    Thanks for the reply shalimar.
I’ve not been able to find melatonin tablets readily available here in the UK.
My sleep routine is usually hit and miss, my daughter is only 2 so by the time she goes to bed, I don’t get a lot of time to myself before I need to go to bed anyway so it means cramming in my me time and cleaning the house.
I’ve suffered from insomnia since I was 15 (now 26) so ive been dealing with it for a while – my gp brushed me off and said I need to clean up my sleep routine, literally nothing else, didn’t even question my lifestyle.

The banana is a habit really, a long with a lot of other things. I’d still probably sleep without it but I know I couldn’t just stop it straight away because it would play on my mind. I do end up sleeping perfectly with my current routine and sleep aids though and the banana doesn’t stimulate me whatsoever.
I do drink caffeine up until maybe 3pm, that’s about 3 cups of coffee a day.

I’ll probably work my way up to the full diet then, and try to wean myself off the banana! I bet I sound really daft but 10 years on and off with insomnia gets you really hung up about sleep haha. Thank you for your suggestions X

  • I’m in agreement with the previous posters, it’s a change of lifestyle that’s required. There can be a whole host of reasons why people put back the weight they have worked so hard to lose: new health issues, stress leading to comfort eating, tiring of the regime, and thinking that reaching the weight loss target is the end of the diet. If losing weight & keeping it off was easy then obesity, diabetes, heart disease etc, etc wouldn’t be a problem. The fact is that we are each responsible for what we shovel/pour down our throats.
Keeping motivated seems to be the key. I’ve been losing weight for most of this year via the BSD (not following it religiously, though) – I’m currently in a state of stasis whereby I’m hovering within a window of give or take 2-3lbs, not losing but not going too high again. I have relaxed things in recent weeks because, admittedly, I have tired of some of the things I’ve been eating when I was losing weight. I’ve revisited the BSD book and tried some recipes that I haven’t used before in an attempt to make sure my weight doesn’t go rocketing back up again. I have to say that the BSD hasn’t “cured” me of sugar – I’m still more than capable of devouring a box of Magnum ice creams, and I still like to bake cakes – so I have to be vigilant about what I eat, and the quantity. For me, variety, keeping food choices interesting will be the key to staying on track & not returning to my former blubbery, unhealthy self. But I think the BSD is a very maintainable way of eating.
Good luck with the weight loss, and the maintenance!

  • I don’t use MFP, I use Fat Secret. I don’t have the book yet, so I’m adapting recipes, which is why I need to keep an eye on the ingredients I use.

The plain yogurt I use to log my intake is given on Fat Secret as about the same calories but twice the carbs given on the pot. Fat Secret also shows how figures for chickpeas, say, vary widely from one supermarket to another. It could be that the MFP figures are from the top end of the possible scale. Plus, with beef, there is potentially a big difference in the fat and hence calorie content of the meat.

I post on a thread of people who started on or very close to 29 September. 54andfatnomore, who posts there, doesn’t count calories or carbs, but he sticks religiously to the recipes. His weight loss is spectacular. So, trusting the recipes obviously works.

well I had good intentions, but I’ve been rubbish. To the point where I don’t even really want to weigh myself lol but the clothes I’ve been wearing still fit so it can’t all be bad. I’ve had two meals out and eaten badly. Somehow I think I just need to properly start again.

I’m not at work this week as my childminder is on hols so I’ve had a lazy morning so far with my son. I made almond flour pancakes for breakfast which I’ve not had in a while and enjoyed them a lot 🙂

I’ll be taking my son along for his afternoon at nursery (at 1220) and on the way home I’m stopping at the shop to buy ingredients to make a nice pot of soup.

Whilst I am cooking the soup I will make a batch of almond flour crackers which I also haven’t made in ages and I miss!

Dinner is going to be pork loin steaks which I might do in a chinesy marinade with 5spice powder and soy sauce with maybe some broccoli and cauliflower.

I’m going to break myself back in this week by being really focussed on the foods but not calories, I ate bread yesterday and ended up really tired again so it just goes to show. I know that I find it harder to control being at home than at work, so if I can get through this week without the rubbish carbs, hopefully break that cycle, and then cut the calories next week when I’m at work.

I’ve taken a whole chicken out of the freezer for tomorrow’s dinner so I’m already a step ahead for tomorrow. I mean business, and although I’ve struggled I still believe in BSD and I still feel like I can do it, so I will. My self imposed target is to lose another stone before the year ends. target is 10st. There I’ve said it! Any loss will be embraced and seen as an achievement however.

  • Hi Lucyjane

The ‘returners’ to this forum (and I speak as one of the relatively longterm posters 😉 ) tend to be those who have done 8 weeks, and, having more weight to lose, return to have another go to kick more of the pounds. This reflects a great experience on the BSD rather than a fail on maintenance.

I’ve not yet seen anyone who did BSD earlier in the year who’s put weight back on – unless they’re simply not posting!

So while I wouldn’t say anything is proven, I do think that for many people seeing the effect of giving up refined carbs could be a way of operating for the long term.

the “95% regain weight” statistic – if indeed it is true, now I start to want to see statistics for all these comments! – would reflect ALL diets, and I believe that the data for Roy Taylor’s study is in fact different (off to look it up to see what the results are after the length of time his trial has been operating).

I finished BSD back in July and am at the same weight as I was then. I like reading the forum as the wonderful success stories inspire me, and sometimes I think I may be able to add some info which will help people.

In terms of how I’ve been…..
I am not eating much bread – will eat really good bread, but not particularly yearning for it, as much of what’s on offer isn’t great.
I’ve not been eating potatoes – again many other things which I prefer. I cooked some for family with a special recipe I use, and had a couple which were lovely. Didn’t want lots. Will have roasties at Christmas!
No need for rice, at all, haven’t missed it despite many spicy Indian type dishes
Gave up sugar in tea/coffee in May which I am still feeling triumphant about!! Have had some desserts which were absolutely lovely, but I found I didn’t need/want too much of them.
Pasta? No worries, don’t want or need it.
Fruit – eat this, but more consciously than I did before. Always used to think eating several apples at a time/per day was ‘negligible’ but have now been educated otherwise.
Alcohol – yes, drank during the BSD and have done since. More consciously, though. And aware of the effects!

The major gain is that I am more interested in flavours and cooking than I’ve been for years. We’ve topped up our spice drawer, bought loads of chillis (Mexican, Thai and other), and I cooked my first daal yesterday with plans for another which I am half making-up myself from a couple of recipe inspirations. Everything tastes absolutely great. OH (also did BSD) used to cook a lot, and then got fed up with it, now is planning lots of new recipes again.

So in summary, I think that as others have said, if you have a conversation going on that this is just a ‘diet’ that you are ‘enduring’ for 8 weeks, then of course you will find it a struggle because that’s what you’re telling yourself. And when you stop, then you are thinking to ‘reward’ yourself for all the ‘pain’ you’ve been telling yourself you’ve been going through.

If you are a pasta/potatoes/rice/pizza family, then it will be difficult to avoid having lots after you complete your 8 weeks, which is why Michael says you should try cooking for yourself/not doing the BSD completely on ‘shakes’, so that you can practice cooking/finding meals which don’t have so many refined carbs in. My family have loved ‘non refined carb’ food, and have declined them when offered as an addition to meals.

I think the jury’s out on long-term success. It would be, of course!

But if you think you will revert, then maybe you will. I think there is power in the conversation you have with yourself about not reverting. Michael also says that sometimes he avoids eating something even though he ‘feels’ hungry, so that he can prove to himself that he is stronger than the ‘hungry’ conversation. I like that.

  • Hello everyone,

I hope you’ve all got off to a good start this morning 🙂 Today is my Day 1 of the BSD. I had good intentions last week and for the weekend just gone but failed miserably and decided to treat those days as a farewell to carbs by eating all the stuff I will be ditching from now on! I’m sure there’s logic in there somewhere….. 😉

So, today I am at work and armed with Greek yoghurt (Fage – yay!) and blueberries for breakfast and some chicken and veg for lunch. I’ve decided to give the café and restaurant a wide berth for the time being as I typically tend to crumble when faced with an array of pastries and sandwiches, not to mention pasta and potatoes. I think my main problem will be the gap between finishing work and having dinner, as this is usually when I find myself grazing at the fridge or cupboard. I’ve got some sparkling water on hand to drink when this happens but what small, sensible snack could I go for here if I really can’t last until dinner? Would something like hummus and some raw veg be ok?

I am very determined to make this work! I am fed up with being fat and uncomfortable in my own skin. And am pretty sure I could get rid of or at least minimise the effects of a range of health issues if I can get my weight and blood sugar under control. My start weight is 17stone 3lb / 109.3kg (I’ve never revealed my weight before – arrrrrghhh!) and I would like to lose a grand total of 6 stone -obviously not all in the 8 weeks but slowly and steadily over the course of a number of weeks on this plan. I’m very inspired by the success stories on these forums so hope to become one of them soon!

Just a quick question about weighing yourself – do you guys weigh every day? Or is it better to aim for just once a week so you don’t become a slave to the scales?

    Over and out 🙂

I’m a week in too, only ate recipes from the book and lost 7lbs. I tried to log food on a similar app to MFP but had the same problem so stopped and just went with the book – something’s obviously working. I only have 23 lbs to lose and 7lbs in the first week is staggering for me!

  • Hi Jooles, I’ve just finished my first week. I have about 2 stone to lose but mostly doing it to get me off the carb treadmill. I only used the recipes in MM’s original book for the first week and lost 7lbs…in a week…

I started the week logging everything on a similar app to MFP and it was doing the same thing so I just trusted the recipes and stuck with that. There may be more accurate Apps out there but I’m not sure, someone else might be able to help with that but I just made what’s in the book and it worked for me so that’s all I can say.

    Just start – I’m sure you’ll be fine 🙂

HI there – try not to put barriers in your way before they are even there. We are great ones for saying ‘I can’t do this’ or ‘it won’t work’ before we’ve even tried. If you think you need the banana, go with it for the first week. If you lose weight, fabulous (and to be honest you may well do if you stick to the rest of the diet) but if you don’t have a rethink and try to find a substitute.

I also suffer from terrible sleep and I try to do everything the ‘experts’ tell you, go to bed at the same time every night, NO SCREENS for an hour before sleep, keep a proper routine. Sometimes it’s fine, sometimes not but I stick to it.

Good luck and let us know how you get on 🙂

I also started last week but with only 23 lbs to lose I was amazed that I lost half a stone in the first week. Also interested to hear of your ‘carb hangover’ so early in the diet – really interesting and really makes me determined not to eat cake next week at our MacMillan coffee morning!!!

Have a great week – looking forward to your progress posts 🙂

Good morning, my starting weight was 25s and 1/2lb, my weight after one week was 24s and 2lb total loss of 12.5lb, I am both pleased and gutted at the same time, I had reached this weight by day 5 and thought I was on a run for a stone in my first week but took my eye of the ball and drifted up a bit, endeavour now to get into the 23 stone bracket this week?.

Those in maintenance congrats in achieving your goals, you first aim is to achieve a stable weight, which even though you have upped your intake may take a while, once achieved then you get to decide, stay lower than target or increase input a little and see where that settles, the science I understand it is putting into practice where I have been lacking

I got to 13 stone two days ago and then for the two following days have put on 1/8 pound. I know it’s only tiny but it is frustrating as I really wanted to start my weight with a 12 . (I am blaming it on not enough exercise over the weekend)

So I have sat down with MFP this morning and plotted out everything I intend to eat today and it has come to 34g carbs and 776 calories, so I will stick to it and see how it goes. This is a first for me. Normally I don’t really plan, in this much detail.

Hey guys – great to hear of your successes and hope that the weekend wasn’t quite the devil you thought it might be. It’s so hard to stick to it when there is temptation around so I hope your resolve didn’t crumble and your first ‘official’ weekly weigh in was all you hope for.

I started this diet when I knew I didn’t have anything on at the weekends for 4 weeks so my weekend was actually easier than the week. I have a sedentary job so sit at my desk alot which makes not thinking about food HARD. Weekends I am up and doing stuff all the time, washing, cleaning, shopping (much cheaper now btw) and have started playing touch rugby to try to get fitter, plus two pooches to walk and a stepson to see off to Uni, so when I got on the scales this morning I had lost, in total for the week, 7lbs!!! Well chuffed with that – plus all the non scale victories of course – more energy, less bloated, not obsessed with food quite so much (that’ll be a hard one to fully crack!)

Looking forward to seeing how you’re all doing xxx

Just a thought about the level of carbs. Was reading about some research on how people react to exercise. All participants in the study followed the same regime but the results varied with some people improving dramatically but others following exactly the same regime did not do anything like as well. They surmised it was the participants genetic makeup that influenced the results. Maybe it could possibly be the same with the carbs. Some people (probably the majority) do really well with 50g of carbs some people do better with lower.

On around 50g of carbs and probably around 1000 calories I lost just over a stone on the BSD in 4 months. Since 3rd Sept on 25 g carbs and 800 calories I have lost up to this morning exactly 11lbs and am now 10 stone 6 and three-quarters of a pound. Even if I was a bit more than the 1000 calories a day because I was guessing rather than weighing – the much faster weight loss can’t be explained by the drop in calories alone.

The waist measurements are really interesting. 3rd Sept 31 inches if I really really pulled the tape tightly. Today 29 inches with the really tight tape. This seems to suggest that for me lower carbs work better to get rid of the visceral fat but someone else wouldn’t need to go anything like as low and indeed it may not be good for them to go as low.

It sort of feels like we are part of a BSD trial and we are leading the way in changing how doctors, dieticians and diabetic educators view a healthy diet. Soon there will be to many of us reversing our diabetes for them to ignore.

    – 70lbs to final absolute goal which I haven’t been since my first child was born (16 years ago!). That seems like a nice round number 😀
    – 5lbs to get into next weight bracket, then 6.5lbs to first goal, then 20lbs to next big goal.
    – my bras fit again
    – I see cheekbones & have lost a double chin!
    – I’ve lost some back fat
    – my tights fit
    – IBS is under control
    – I’m managing fine on the eating plan (need to watch for sneaky carbs though)

Going to have shakshuka & salad as my main meal today.

weighed today (hate weighing myself, I always expect to see a big gain) – 2.5lb loss (17.5lb total from 31lb initial goal).

I’ve been letting my carbs creep up, need to be more careful this week … I’ve got 13.5lbs to go & I’d really love to see 5lbs gone in the next week.

  • I believe that the issue with regain is that too often we see it as being ‘on a diet’ for a period of time and after that revert to previous ‘non-diet’ habits. the Fad very low calorie ones – like cabbage soup etc – are not suited to prolonged use (if could even stand it) and do nothing to teach better habits.

BSD has the quick hit but changes patterns of eating and then there is the road map to the maintenance pattern of healthy eating, no guarantees about not regaining, but it has all the ways to limit that and as noted about – getting off meds and onto a healthier state is a pretty big motivator.

Regarding the 95% – I wonder how that statistic spreads itself over the different cases? The stone down stone up stone down….etc dieter may be very different in behaviour to the radical life changing weight loss person. Just a thought.

Morning all! I’m sat with a coffee looking out onto a beautiful scene, while everyone sleeps! We packed most of the car last night so just need our pjs and packed lunches putting in before we leave. May as well enjoy the silence while it lasts!

Avila, it will take time but I’m sure you’ll get there in the end. I think a lot of us are too hard on ourselves sometimes. We are only human and to expect to change the habits of (in some cases) a lifetime overnight can be setting ourselves up to fail. And that’s never a good idea. You know how stress and hard times can make some people lose weight? Death, divorce etc? Nope, not me. If anything it increases my appetite. For me personally I know alcohol is a bad idea, not just for what I may eat but for what it does to my weight loss. So I won’t drink at home now. Unless it’s a special occasion. I think it’s time to search out a back up plan for danger moments. Treat yourself to something that won’t impact on weight loss. I rarely wear make up, and when i do I look like an oompa loompa, so the other day I went to Clinique, had my skin properly matched and treated myself to a foundation. It will probably last the year and as my husband said, it was less than I would have spent on wine in a week pre bsd. Or as I know you love dogs, why not get one of those tins you can’t open only with a can opener, and every time you resist temptation, chuck a couple of pound coins in and you’ll have a nice donation for a rescue centre or the like. I’ve probably donated more to charity this last three months than I do in a year, because I’m not spending on chocolate, take away and wine 😅 Phone a friend and chat while the urge passes. One or none of these things might be your cup of tea, but there will be something that works, it’s just a case of finding it. But don’t be too hard on yourself, as long as we pick ourselves up and carry on, our brains and body will reconcile in the end! ☺

Hello Frog, did you go anywhere nice?

Thanks Josie it was an amazing day ☺

Right, alarms have gone, crack on! See you all when i get back to sunny Wales and my mountain of washing! The joys!

  • Tabletalk, good luck. Can’t be easy. Letting the kids finish the snacks sounds like a strategy! Maybe you could do a pud or two? Berries and Greek yogurt, maybe turned into a kind of fool might go down well.

And Arthur, I’m posting my figures daily. I find it good discipline. Somewhere on here, Michael Mosley says that research shows that people weigh daily also do better at losing weight. So I’m not worrying about the weigh only once a week mantra and weigh every day. Even if the loss isn’t much, or I stay the same or go up even (happened once), I like to know. You must have enjoyed seeing your last loss!

Littlepete, what brilliant blood readings. You must be really pleased. I’m really looking forward to getting the books. Lots of people have mentioned the skinny chilli, so that must be good. And thanks for the tip on rapeseed oil. My parents have a Lidl near them, I’ll get them some.

    Today’s figures:
    84.3 kg
    -0.1 kg
    Overall change -4.2 kg
    Yesterday’s food and exercise
    793 calories
    32 net carbs
Four hours’ more gardening. I’m knackered!

    Hi Kittie,

    Two things occur to me.

The first is that I recall reading on another website somewhere that between 50 to 100 gm of carbs a day is the level at which many people go into ketosis. So you may be lucky and the 83g incl banana may be no problem at all for you. So why not start the BSD with that and see how you go?

My other thought is that as humans we try to anticipate every upcoming issue and solve it before we start, thus making life a lot harder for ourselves than it needs to be. If this is the start of a new way of eating for life, then you know you will make adaptations as you progress. So like Shalimar says, you may decide to go smaller banana, half, quarter etc… But don’t try to impose that on yourself now before you start, just start and then manoeuvre once you are on your way.

I have recently completed the 800 BSD 8 weeks. I started out with breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, multiple double-shot coffees. To my utter surprise I finished with only lunch and dinner, no snacks, and only one single shot coffee at lunch. If you had told me this would happen I would not have believed you – and if I had tried to impose those extra rules on myself from the get go, I may have crashed and burned. Amazingly, they just happened, because my body changed. So be nice to yourself, start with the 800 calorie rule, and work with your body from there!

Good luck with the new way of eating, and with the insomnia. I have found that this way of eating has really helped with my insomniac early hours of the morning sessions (maybe the trying to do 10,000 steps a day has helped too). Keep reading, keep posting 😃

  • Welcome Ella!

You sound very determined and highly motivated, which is really all you need to bring to this plan – the rest is just following the ‘rules’. Your decision to just get it done is going to keep you going when the carbs are calling in the next few days or weeks. Just jump on here and read, read, read or ask questions whenever a challenge arises.

I look forward to reading of your success! Best wishes!

You can get melatonin in a pill also.
If you kept your sleep routine “cleaned up” all the time, as much as possible, then maybe you would have less episodes of insomnia.

What does a medical specialist say about your insomnia.
I have no medical knowledge but i wonder if the banana has just become a habit. If you eat the banana to you still have insomnia? I would think that much sugar would be a stimalant. Do you have caffeine or other stimulants in tea, coffee after 12 noon? Do you have a calming sleep routine. Do you go in for relaxing meditation type stuff.
I’m just thinking there must be other strategies for you.

I am going to miss bananas too. Can you work your way down … to a small banana, 3/4 of one, 1/2 of one …1/4 of one type of thing. I didn’t just get into this whole hog right off … i’ve been on about 4 weeks of preparation … starting with a 12 hour fast every day and working my way up to 15 hours and more … just to get my mind and body ready.

Sometimes a very small snack helps me at bedtime … but not a stimulating sugar.

I’m just thinking there has to be an alternative.

  • Actually this is addressed in Michael’s 8 week blood sugar diet.

I’m going to be one of the 5 percent that keeps it off …. and we all can be in the 5 percent.

I have been one of those people who’ve been on other “diets” when i decided to stop …. now i am committed to the plan. I’m determined to beat diabetes as well.

Once i actually get determined that i really, really, really want something i get it. My mother always said i was as stubborn as a mule. This will now come in very handy!

Glad you surprised your BBQ friends. 🙂
I think people loose weight in different places at different times. I usually loose weight off my collar bones first. I’m trying to get rid of my belly fat … which i call Candy Mountain Jr. after a local ski hill. I try and do aquabics which twist my midsection … not ready to tackle sit ups because of my back … but i have instructions from a chiropractor who said i could do sitting sit ups on the floor with the couch a little away from my back and lean back using what stomach muscles i have.

Good news weight wise for me … now below 230 pounds … at 228. Haven’t seen that in years and years … went looking for some pants i might fit … and ended up taking winter and now-fitting stuff out of storage and putting my summer stuff in. Charity will be getting lots of clothes etc. as i am purging the entire house … and pitching stuff out and giving stuff away. New rule … something comes in the house … something goes out.

Good thing …. i’ve spent the weekend doing cleaning, clearing, moving furniture. My sister is giving me living room furniture … leather and in very good shape. It’s much better than what i have and i certainly am not too proud to accept. I donate to charity but i shop at the thrift shops myself. I buy new too … but not unless i really, really, really like it or can’t get it cheaper.

It has been a real lesson in buying wisely … because i gave away stuff with price tags still on it.

Lots of lessons in diet and life. Still fasting but i’ve added raw eggs. In childhood we ate raw eggs beaten with a teeny bit of sugar … of course i used xylitol and noticed no difference.

Food i ate as a German child … pickled herring and herring embryos, blood sausage …. Sounds good to me!!

Looking forward to Tuesday … when i get a sofa, loveseat and a great rocker!!
    L
Yoga class was a bust … not beginner as it was advertised. I have a book i my try if i have time and just try and get some advice in class about the proper way to do a few things. Lift my ass of the floor while on my back … i don’t think so!!! 🙂

Hope you have a great week.

  • We will only regain weight if we do not treat the BSD as an eating plan for life. This allows us to do 5:2, general Mediterranean or dip back into 800 cals per day. As mentioned often on here, on this eating plan we do not crave many of the things that have brought us down previously. For people like me whose BGLs have returned to normal (at least for now) we really don’t have a choice, so that ‘s a great motivator.
