I frequently get phases like this – lose a bit but a kilo back on, lose that and a bit more, stay static – occasionally I can put it down to going over on cals or carbs, but I can equally have a ‘going over’ day and lose a lot, or a ‘compliant’ day and go up.
Are you weighing daily or weekly? whichever it is, I wouldn’t start panicking yet.

I don’t measure my blood at home, only HBa1c occasionally, so can’t comment in fluctuations in that or otherwise

Hi all, don’t despair, a LOT of people report a plateau after the first couple of weeks. It will kickstart again, promise! If your waist size is decreasing (and I bet it is) then you are on the right track.

And remember, you’re not doing a ‘quick fix’, you’re in it for the longhaul and to feel healthier, not just slimmer!

If all you’ve done is increased the calorie count by 100, and kept the carbs relatively low, I’d say that this was just a blip.

Could be to do with state of your body in terms of water, or poo (sorry), or a number of other things. Have you also been exercising and therefore building muscle?

Whatever, I shouldn’t panic, but keep on keeping on and see what happens over the next few days/week.

    Our bodies are very mysterious.

Hi folks, I have a different problem. I lost approx 20kg on this diet and knocked off some diabetes tablets, a blood pressure tablet and statins. I kept up the programme for quite a number of weeks after the 8 weeks. At the moment in one week, keeping to 60g carbs and approx 900 calories I have put 1 kg on!! My fasting blood sugars have also raised. It’s as if, whilst everyone else is remaining static, I am actually gaining.
    Any ideas?

Igor, that brings me back to NICE’s reaction to the phcuk research when NICE said they couldn’t recommend this diet because it would be too hard to have to teach everyone about it. Some doctors are fine, mine is lovely but some can cut you down with a disapproving look.

Two other experiences of medical staff responses. My brother is a nurse who retired about a year ago, he was staying with my daughter and could hear us discussing our diets, she does paleo which is v. low carb too. Regarding my calories I could hear him tut tutting in the background but he never said a word. When they came out to visit last month I fed them both with my diet and asked if they wanted extras like chips, rice, pots etc. Both said no they would see what it was like. Both lost around 4 lbs in the 5 days they were here and my brother is going to buy the book. Daughter is okay on paleo and has lost 33lbs since April.

Daughter coming back over last week to collect the grandchildren sat next to a diabetic specialist nurse from a Birmingham hospital, she told her about my diet and the nurse said she was carrying out trials in her patient groups.

We will reign supreme one day.

She wasn’t as bad as all that, and as OH said to me, it’s more that I’m annoyed with myself for thinking of the things to say far too late.

I will stick with her, and be better informed when I see her next. I have, as you suggest, enrolled on the system to see my records, and I will therefore know what the results of the blood test in mid October are before meeting with her again.

To be fair, she was impressed that I said I was feeling wonderful, particularly in terms of waking in the morning all alive-o, ready for the day, and said that perhaps she should think about trying what I was doing. So long as alcohol was allowed on it.

Well, it was a wild night tonight. I stayed until midnight watching Raphael Nadal win the game. It was a historic game also:
The first ever tennis games I have been to in Melbourne, Paris, London, or NYC and they closed the stadium and still did the game.

NO DELAYS! It was amazing! But this amazing did cost a cool $ 100 Million!!!!

Nadal is Spain’s great tennis star. But, not great enough to hit a ball outside the stadium when closing the roof!

When people on here are talking about losing large amounts of weight – which hallelujah! We all seem to be doing..i always get mental image of family friends and neighbours slipping and sliding on the lost pounds of fat! 😃 X

Yowzer – it was a thread about excessive peeing which then drifted into constipation
    – worth looking at because Sunshine girl made a brilliant post about where/how the fat we loose actually goes.
It reminded me however, of a weird taxi journey where the cab driver talked exclusively about squatting to poo rather than sitting on the toilet.

Janey – I knew it was a marathon and British heart foundation – I just hadn’t appreciated that is was quite as challenging as over a month – that’s almost a mile (2,000 steps) a day!
    I’ve just calculated it – assuming a stride length of 80cm, 1,758 steps a day 🙂

I read the Newcastle research results after receiving a Type 2 diagnosis (7.3 mmol/L) and decided to give the Blood Sugar Diet a try. Blood sugar had gone from pre-Diabetic to Diabetic over a 16 month period and I turned 50 last week. Did the diet for 7 weeks, plus a three weeks of transitioning to normal eating again. I lost 17.5 kg, or more 18% of my body weight. BMI went from 30.2 (Obese) to 24.6 (Healthy). Lost 5 inches around my waist (nothing fits in my wardrobe anymore). Blood sugar reading dropped to 5.5 (top end of normal). In all honesty if I’d know three years ago that a diet like this would work so effectively and be so easy to do (I didn’t really feel all that hungry after the first 4-5 days) I’d have started it back then. My results were better than the Newcastle patients and six weeks after finishing my transition to normal eating my weight remains stable. This diet really works!

I am on a right downer on myself – I just cant believe I allowed myself to get to over 300lbs – I do beat myself up a lot; it is hard to think of oneself as anything but a greedy person – I was heading for one of those My 600lb life programmes and it has been terrifying. I was a normal sized child until I was about 7-8 and then steadily grew bigger and bigger of the ensuing 50 years. I did lose about 5stone back in my 30’s but then bad health and some traumatic experiences sent me spiralling. I have to keep my head in the right place.

wow – and I get hacked of with my GP – she sounds dire Igor!
And I know some people on here have had superfast losses, but I would expect a GP to be slightly surprised at someone losing nearly 2 stone in a month; I’m not saying it’s unhealthy – but unusual.
any alternative practices that you could register with, or request a change of GP within the practice?

Alternatively, if the practice has a patient advisory group, join that & be a thorn in their side!

After my appointment with the diabetic/community nurse a couple of weeks ago, she didn’t say so, but was clearly a bit peeved that I had stopped taking metformin, and asked me to get a new HBa1c test done & see her again in two weeks.
Had the test, and levels now within the normal range at 3.8. The appointment should have been today – I had a call yesterday, saying that the appointment had been made with the wrong person (sounds odd – I came out of the appointment and made the booking at reception, saying that I needed a follow up appointment with the person I had just seen), and rebooked for next week.
I checked my patient record online last night – no sign of the appointment next week! If they’ve seen all the normal results and don’t need to say so, why not just call and say that?

I would wholeheartedly recommend to anyone to get online access to your medical records – that way you know before you see the GP/nurse whatever what the results are, and can do any research, or think in advance about what questions you have.
Also, not exclusively, but when I google things medical, I usually put NHS at the front of my search, then you get their view on a topic before you read more widely.

May not be in season now; don’t know if you can but it frozen, but Rhubarb is excellent – 5g of carbs per 100g
not for a fruitbowl, obviously, but great with yogurt, porridge, cottage cheese – and if not overly sweetened, great as a vegetable with fish or lamb.
I cook it with about 1 teaspoon of stevia per kilo of rhubarb -one recent was a bit tart, so I added a touch more after it was cooked.

Just googled and can’t find any frozen rhubarb , but several supermarkets still listing it – need to go to a big supermarket before the season is over!

Having been very successful on the BSD, losing more than 15% of my starting body weight though not type 2, I thought I would go and have a general blood test at my GP as the last one was about 2 years ago (all well then, but thought should just have a check).

Requested this at reception and was given an appointment with nurse, who said ‘I can only give you a cholesterol test, we don’t do blood tests unless the cholesterol results aren’t right’. First slightly odd thing, but didn’t argue.

Just been back to get my results – never met doctor before, she was puzzled why I was there.

I explained what I had been doing. She made the usual wincing face as she said she’d never heard of BSD within all the diets there were. So I explained further, quoted the Newcastle and other research, the effect on OH’s blood sugar results, and said that it was therefore worthwhile her investigating. At which point she told me firmly that ‘whilst I might recommend it to patients, I simply don’t have the time to investigate these things…’

Why oh why did I not follow up swiftly with “so you recommend things you don’t know anything about? Would it not be useful to have a potential Type 2 treatment recommendation since as I’ve told you my OH is now off metformin?” But I didn’t.

And then she told me that my ‘bad’ cholesterol levels were very high at 9.7 and my ‘good’ cholesterol levels were also high (at 1.8 nearly twice the best level, which is a good result). So my ratio is 5.4. Which is ok and normal. But she seemed confused and mentioned statins.

I told her I had lost more than 25 lbs, and said that I had done this very swiftly. How long? She asked. Since May, I replied, and she replied ‘oh, over a long period then, not just a month’ !!!!! Seeing my starting weight was 10 stone 8 lbs, I would have thought that this size of loss would have been surprising. Why didn’t I mention it was 15% of starting body weight lost in just over 8 weeks???

But, given all that, all well, really – I have a proper blood test with fasting BS (yes I know the potential problems with that) and further cholesterol in mid October, with a follow-up discussion with her.

But I am usually very proud to be taken seriously by GPs and to have rational conversations with them. This one was unsatisfactory – should have had a BS test with the overall bloods, not just cholesterol; she should’ve been interested in potential Type 2 treatment; and it was a good idea she didn’t ask me what I thought about her threat of statins as the air would’ve turned blue.

Still, I suppose she acknowledged I was eating healthily……

I have subsequently researched high ‘bad’ cholesterol on LCHF diets, and see that there can be spikes. Wish I’d looked that up first.

  • Thanks Verano, I have found it now. Nice site, if I hadn’t already found MM I would consider using this. I will browse anyway as I always hope to learn something new. Some of the recipes look good or can be easily adapted.

Just browsing through Ian Marber’s book, I did quite well on this diet (before that awful nutritionist put me on 300 g carb diet) and have just found my absolute favourite snack Spicy Mashed Lentils which I used to put on an oatcake or ryvita, maybe now use as a dip with raw veg. Will check out the carbs before I put the recipe on here.

Skip the lentil recipe just checked and red lentils have 60g carb to every 100g. Even if that is a complex carb it is too much. Anyone know about lentils as there is a recipe in MMs book but brown lentils.

Bubbles! Remember the BSD book which is all about the shaming and guilt for weight gains which is entirely misplaced – it is the carb addiction which sets the body to craving more food not weakness on the part of the eater.

You are NOT bad and wrong, you are a human being whose hormones have got out of sync, and you are well on the way to getting them to do the best thing for your body. Everyone is different, keep the faith and plug onwards, day by day if necessary.

You are a phenomenal success, and a huge inspiration to others – nothing at all bad and wrong in that! 🙂 🙂

I watched the video this morning as I’d not seen any of the TV programmes. I quite enjoyed watching him but wasn’t that impressed with the interviewer. I think the program tried to get through too much in a short space of time and the two ‘guinea pigs’ who had been on the plan for 3 weeks didn’t seem that impressed. Maybe, Michael Mosely should have been more forceful in pointing people to these forums!!!

No think you have a different site. It is http://www.dietdoctor.com and the doctor in question seems to be Dr Andreas Eenfeldt. He’s Swedish, sorry I thought it was an American site. I just found it an interesting site. As Loopylou says he does not advocate counting calories instead he says you should rely on your body to tell you when you’re hungry. Unfortunately, I think most of us have lost the knack of knowing when we are hungry!

Anyway, I think there are some useful ideas and graphics on the website

Day one: exercise was excellent today, I walked briskly for an hour which is a lot more than the zero I usually do! Food was also great for most of the day, but then I suddenly got ravenous when dinner was cooking and shovelled food into my mouth then ate dinner as well! Total calories around 1200, carbs 65g. Better than my usual days but not what I was aiming for.

Trelawny, I previously lost around 4kg in 6 weeks (twice). I didn’t exercise due to a foot injury and I didn’t stick to the BSD very strictly so 4kg seemed quite reasonable to me, more than I’ve lost on other diets. I am determined to do better this time.

I’ve weighed in this week at 63.5kg (a smidgen under 140lbs or just under 10 stone!) after 20 weeks on the BSD.

At 5’6″, my normal weight BMI kicked in at 25, so I’m now under at 22.5.

I started off with my size 16 work trousers getting a bit on the tight side and now I’ve just bought the same pair in a size 10!

I’m aiming to stop at 63kg then keep an eye on things and work out how I can maintain that weight without going back to sugar or simple carbs. When I work out the secret, I’ll let you know😀

Thanks for your comments re blood sugars btw… Mine were down to 7.8 today and 8.4 yesterday so definitely going in the right direction 🙂 I had thought it would happen quicker but very happy to see the results so far.

It was an interesting video that Verano recommended which can be found here http://www.dietdoctor.com/insight-beating-diabetes-with-dr-michael-mosley

    Hi bubbles,
I agree with sunshinegirl completely. I’d give my eye teeth for your weight loss figures! 🙂 We all start at different weights so comparisons are not helpful.
I think my weight loss averages at a shade over 1 lb per week (although it’s probably less than that now because, admittedly, I have relaxed things a bit these past few weeks). I started in January, I’ve lost around 30lbs in total (it fluctuates – refer to previous sentence) but would like to lose a bit more in order to achieve my ultimate target. When I get my 2nd wind I’ll knuckle down to it.

Even after all this time, I’m still prone to stuffing my face with things I know I shouldn’t! My mood is a big bad influence, plus I’m a sucker for special offers in the supermarket. Everyone hits a wall in this process.

We shouldn’t fixate on who’s the slowest loser – a loss is a loss, it’s still an achievement. After 13 weeks, your body probably just needs a bit of a breather, then it’ll get back on track. Keep your chin up!
