Even tho’ JulesMaigret is a member of the forum I am going to adopt Holmes’ advice of eliminating the impossible, & whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth?
Since my earlier post I have found-out that the David Lloyd chain are rolling-out Boditrax scanners in their gyms. As DL has always been strong on racket sports, I have deduced you are a member of your local……..! Elementary, my dear Mixnmatch
Meanwhile, 1 of my mates wants to have a game of badminton; he hasn’t played in almost 20 years, I haven’t played in much longer. Like your games(??) it will be played in a friendly & social manner & the loser will be never hear the end of it!

I lobbed some onion granules into the crackers for a nice savoury taste (better than devouring a bag of crisps), and some weird seeds called Kolonji Black Onion seeds for a bit of visual interest. I do like a savoury cracker. Only did a half quantity – it’s probably best if I don’t make a full amount, I would probably scoff them! 🙂
I will get my mojo back in time.

I find that I do better if I eat more (healthy) fats, i.e. less cravings, less hunger pangs, more energy. This amounts to just slightly more fats than protein on any day. I also try to get at least 13 g of fiber as that feels more satisfying and keeps me regular. One great thing about this so far is that my body is much more aware of what it needs. Whatever you start with, once you’ve adapted past the sugar/ carb cravings, you’ll have a better sense of what you need. My advice is to prioritize the fat and get enough salt! Especially days 4-6. Good luck!

There’s a website called Nutrition Data Self that I use. They have detailed analysis of food, you can input your own custom food, and also track your daily calories or carbs. It’s American so fava rather than broad beans, etc. I find it easier to use than the others, but that’s probably because I have been using it for ages. I’m sure you will find keeping proper track will be worth it. Good luck

on 16 Jan 2017 at 19:21 in Welcome to the BSDHi all,
Started the diet today and have just eaten my evening meal and I am still absolutely ravenous! It’s as if I hadn’t eaten at all. I have a long way to go (about 50lbs) so hoping that the book is right and the feelings of hunger ease up a bit. I am however, looking forward to weighing-in to see the fruits of my labour. Should I be weighing myself everyday?
Like you Theodora, my weakness is bread and wine and my husband is slim too so would waste away if he joined me on this diet, so it is difficult watching him and the kids eating what I would have been eating if I wasn’t on the diet. I just hope he doesn’t test my willpower in the next few days by cracking a bottle open!
Having said all that, today I have felt quite in control. I have an entire week of food planned down to the last calorie and have been actively avoiding the kitchen to reduce the likelihood of a snack-slipage.
Thanks for all the positivity on this thread, it certainly helps to know other people are in the same position as me.

May I ask what your fasting blood glucose level was before you started? -

on 16 Jan 2017 at 19:19 in Welcome to the BSDHello fellow BSDers!
A little about me ….. I was asked by my GP to go for a fasting blood test a couple of weeks ago, primarily to check my kidney function because the antidepressants I have been taking for the past few years can apparently have an effect on your kidneys, and they wanted to check all was ok on that score before giving me my usual repeat prescription.
A few days later they called and said my blood sugar levels were “a little high” and I was therefore to go in for a repeat fasting blood test, and take a urine sample. I duly did so.
Whilst there the nurse showed me the computer screen which showed my results. It was 10.4. on the previous week’s test. I noticed that back in 2012, the last time it was checked, it was 7.2. The time before that it was 5. All were fasting tests done in the early morning.
I am currently waiting for the results of the repeat blood test that happened on Friday, although I have already been informed that the urine test showed no glucose present. Weird, huh?
If the blood test is again higher than it should be they are going to give me the oral test involving the glucose drink.
Over the past few days I have been doing a bit of reading online (as well as buying the BSD book!) and it seems to me that the GP ought to have carried out further tests in 2012, when the reading was 7.2? What do you guys think?
I have been feeling pretty knackered and awful since then but put it down to depression hence going on medication for that. What if I have been diabetic all along? Is it too late to reverse it?
Any thoughts gratefully received… -
Hi
Just re-read my post. ( a bit late!) My darling dad died at the end of April last year, just 2 weeks after I started the BSD – not January : ) -
Are internet forums covered by Breach of Promise laws?
Just wondering……
-
Hi Everyone : )
Please can I claim late entry into Team January? I started last Monday and have lost 5lb so am really pleased.
I did start last April and lost 8lb in the first couple of weeks, but my dad died very suddenly at the end of January and I’ve only now been able to think about doing this again. Needless to say I have more to lose than I did then, but hope doing this will help me feel a bit more in control of my life! My dad had diabetes and heart disease, as I mentioned when I first signed up last year. Little did I know then how few the precious days left with him would be.
So… this is all good! Good luck everyone – I look forward to the journey with you. : )
-
Hi all, just an update. I’m on week 2 day 7, lost 11.6lbs so far. Still on plan, had a few higher calorie days but no off plan foods (okay, I had 2 chips). Went back to the gym today, muscles struggled a bit but I felt good for it. Generally feeling pretty good and hopeful for the next 6 weeks.
-
Just had to post to get rid of my earlier, I think David has refused my proposal but I was only after his cheese. Even that sounds wrong.
-
Congratulations, it is so great to hear that you are no longer regarded as diabetic. 😀😀😀😀😀 this WOE really does seem miraculous sometimes doesn’t it, but then as you said, it couldn’t happen without your hard work and determination, so well done!
-
By following the Fast 800 diet and increasing activity since being diagnosed in October 2016 I’ve lost over 2 stone and managed to reverse diabetes!! I had a fasting blood test last Monday and got the result today. My HbA.C was 39 down from 51 and glucose was 6.6. As you can imagine I’m over the moon! All my hard work and determination has paid off.
To anyone out there just starting the BSD or considering starting it, do it, it REALLY does work, I’m living proof. -
Nope, from where I was standing, you looked as if you were passing a baton 🤓
Go girl go!
To everyone that has even done the tiniest bit of exercising or movement, I am proud of you.
Now are you ready for a challenge?
Let’s DOUBLE it!!!Come on, the worst that can happen is, I have to call my hubby again to the bed and get him to unhook my earrings from the knee of my stretchy trousers as I have been doing yoga. Again.?!!!
He always says… Now what.
Then quietly untangles me, then walks away, shaking his head.Love Lucia

Hi Frog/happyvegan,
I’ve only ever used MFP for tracking as have found their database quite extensive in terms of things we buy in our everyday UK shop, and apart from other MFP members perhaps incorrectly logging the wrong nutritional values for some items most things are pretty spot on. I’m guessing where this might differ is generic non-branded items such as broccoli, where if you select the generic product that shows in your list, 100g are stated 6.6g of Carbs whereas if you select the Sainsbury’s Basics this is listed as 1.8g Carbs (net) as I believe the generic items have been input using the USDA nutritional values, i.e. Total Carbs as Frog suggests. So whenever I input fresh fruit/veg and any other non-processed items I tend to go with the UK supermarket equivalent to ensure I get the correct UK values….bit of a faff as it would be nice if MFP had a UK option to convert US values. But I suppose the good thing is that if you have been inadvertently using the US values, then you will have overstated whatever carb amounts you have logged than the other way around….I realise I may well have done this myself with some of my fruit/veg logging now!
I’ve never heard of FatSecret, might take a look at it to see how it compares.
-
Net carbs, are what most people use, I am not sure if the book was explicit. I always used net carbs, as that was the only way to make sure I got enough fibre.
-
Hi DavidA, our local gym has just got the scanner, and was doing a promotion where the first scan was free. Subsequent ones cost £5 I think. I don’t know of any others, and had never heard of it before that so I can’t help much I am afraid. I plan to track what I am doing every few months, as it has totally put me off relying either on BMI or my old Salter scales 😊 also just to reassure you some more I am not a prop forward either, just a keen social badminton player.

on 16 Jan 2017 at 17:19 in Welcome to the BSDHi everyone – good to meet you all.
I’m just starting out too – first day today, so it will be lovely to have some company along the way! Ideally I would like to lose 28lbs and, more to the point, keep it off. I am saying that straight off so I have a record of it when I feel I am weakening. In fact, I will change that and say I am GOING to lose 28lbs and keep it off!
My inspiration has been two of my closest friends (married couple) who lost respectively 3 stone (him) and 2 stone (her) in the 8 weeks and, so far they have kept it off for 3 months and have never looked of felt better. One of my difficulties, however, is that my husband is THIN. He can (and does) eat and drink what he likes and never puts on so much as an ounce and still weighs the same as when we married nearly 40 years ago (12.5 stone and 5’11” tall). I, on the other hand, am 4 stone heavier (but I was too thin then – hey, those were the days 🙂 ). We both really enjoy food (I love cooking, he loves eating) and wine. I’m really gonna miss my wine and good artisan bread which are my two real weaknesses!
So far today I have had a few nuts for breakfast and a dish of Greek yoghurt and blueberries for lunch and I have made a pot of ratatouille for my supper, and will freeze the rest in individual portions to use later – but I’ll have to cook something far more calorific for O/H, or he’ll totally fade away. On the positive side, I feel fine so far, though early days..
I have today purchased a pedometer and a set of scales which not only weigh me, but also calculate my BMI and percentage of body fat/water. Haven’t used either yet, but watch this space………
I guess I am going to have to walk more – I already walk the dogs approx. 2.5 miles (approx. 5,000 steps) a day but I’m sure they are gonna love the fact that I need to increase my steps to 10,000 per day 🙂
Having now made my first post, guess I better get off my butt and start moving!!

on 16 Jan 2017 at 17:01 in Welcome to the BSDMocnk – thing is, if you really stick with the Fast800, you will probably find your palette changes and all those high carb things you crave now, really won’t appeal anymore. I too love food and an alcoholic drink, entertaining friends and so on, but having been on the 800 on and off for almost a year, the cakes, sweet treats and alcohol isn’t so attractive anymore and I’m rarely tempted to consume them and even more rarely do I crave them. These days a small dram of whisky will sate an urge for alcohol and a cube of chocolate will deal with a yen for something sweet.
My advise – don’t panic about what happens later. Concentrate of sticking with the principles of the BSD for the 8wks and take it from there – you’ll be a different person by then, both in weight and taste and you won’t feel deprived.

posted by Iwanttobeslim on help please would it be possible to use SOBA and UDON noodles on this diet
on 16 Jan 2017 at 17:00 in Starting the BSDSeaviewjoy – you will probably find that kelp noodles are available on Amazon, as are konjac noodles. They are equally low calorie and low carb, but can be a bit rubbery. I find the thin ones and the transparent ones are more palatable than the others, and they are very filling. Unfortunately most of the yummy oriental noodles tend to be very high carb, as well as highly processed and the carbs tend to convert immediately into high blood sugar levels. My worst realisation was that sushi rice sends your blood sugar spiking as quickly as sugar, so now I settle for the salmon sashimi and kaiso salad.

Sunshine-girl – hopefully you will start feeling a lot better very soon. It’s horrible when you feel under the weather.
Today has been a much better day than yesterday. Husband is beginning to feel a bit better. My new website – which had been down over the weekend has gone live and looks really good.
Have had the whole afternoon off and don’t start back until 6pm. I thought I would wander through the city centre but had absolutely no intention of buying anything. But as I wandered through M&S I saw the perfect jacket in a lovely shade of red in size 10 which fitted me perfectly. So did the one in a lovely shade of teal. They were originally £45 marked down to 22.99 – who could resist that. As I walked past Rohan I thought I would just glance at the sale stuff. Saw a lovely size 10 top and small midnight blue fleece which again fitted beautifully – both at a really good sale price.
Not at all hungry today and struggling to even eat 800 calories.
-
Weigh day today and down another 1.7kg to 109.7kg down 35.2kg so far.
-
Problem is that the US measures carbs including fibre, and UK standard measurement is carbs net of fibre.
I started off using MFP, then switched to FatSecret, because they have a UK site – still not perfect, but I prefer it despite the ghastly name. -
Hi ShelboBaggins
Yes very happy with week one. Really spurs you on doesn’t it ?I try to check entries or use verified ones and if not I opt for Sainsburys and Tesco too but occasionally I just don’t have the time. Have learned from this though and will be extra careful from now on.
I plan on going through my list of regular foods on MFP and checking them which will make life easier. Also looking for a good list/chart online of the cals, carbs, fat, protein and fibre in foods. There’s plenty of good sites with the info but I want one I can copy and edit for the foods I eat. There must be one out there.
-
Personally, I rely largely on yogurt with various toppings, but I also use the following on occasion:
Scrambled egg and smoked salmon or gravadlax
Line a bun tin with thin ham, drop in a few tiny subs of cheese. Pour in a whisked egg and bake until set – doesn’t take too long.
Gem lettuce leafs topped with some cold meat or a thin spread of cream cheese or hummus.
Pancakes made with almond flour – you can add a spice to make them more interesting. -

on 16 Jan 2017 at 16:34 in Welcome to the BSDHi Sunshine Girl – hope that the cold is on its way out – the lemon juice should help.
I hadn’t noticed that with the PLJ – but I did buy a large bag of lemons as I got to the end of the first bottle. They pretty much sat on the kitchen counter, went mouldy, got thrown away, so I’ll probably stick with PLJ and not assess the colour of my pee – although I switched to drinking ginger in the mornings when I had a cold, and I’m still doing that.
I got seconded to a workgroup once that involved periodic residential stays away. The first one I turned up to a couple of them had just got back from the states, and were chucking back berocca to avoid jet lag. Everyone else knew each other really well, so it was a bit odd to be in a room of about ten strangers with everyone discussing the colour of their pee.I like the Tom Kerridge book, I haven’t cooked anything from it yet but yes, the large recipe sizes are a bit irritating – also the portion sizes are huge, there was a two person omelette with about seven eggs.
I’m coming to realise that I primarily use recipe books for inspiration, rather than actually following recipes, so I’m happiest to find a recipe, asses the ingredients and make my own version without using the recipe too dogmatically.
He does talk about having meat free days, but meat and fish do feature quite heavily; not one I’d recommend for a vegetarian.I have just made (and eaten) my version of a Moroccan-style chicken with lentils that I found on the BBC website – very tasty, I had it with cauliflower.

I have found that on the low carb eating style, alcohol affects me much more quickly than it ever has before. As a consequence, I pretty much avoid alcohol these days. Will very occasionally have a small whisky at home and if out socially, might have a small red wine or occasionally a g&t. It was my birthday on Friday and we went out for a meal, so I allowed myself one small sherry, one small glass of red and a small brandy to finish. This represents unusual consumption for me these days.
Have to say, I feel so much better for not consuming alcohol regularly and if you can avoid it whilst on the BSD, it’s probably best to.

on 16 Jan 2017 at 16:08 in Starting the BSDWelcome NLR2407! Breakfast can be really different than what we have been taught to eat for breakfast — I go to the gym most mornings for a boot camp or spin class and my go-to is coffee with 2 Tablespoons heavy cream and a slice of cheese (1 ounce). Keeps me going to lunch, even through hard workout.
Sounds high fat (and it is!) but it is very satisfying and I eat lots of green veg/meat later in day to get balance.
I reached goal in June 2016 — have maintained since then. Good luck with finding your own good breakfasts! -

on 16 Jan 2017 at 15:56 in Welcome to the BSDHello Snekker, You’re doing well with your weight reduction – I found it very difficult to stick with the 800kcals a day diet, although perhaps I didn’t persist for enough days to adjust to the low carbs. I’ve been re-inspired by two books I read recently. One is Wheat Belly by Dr William Davis, and the other is Eat Fat Get Thin by Dr Mark Hyman. They both recommend low carb diets but emphasize clearing out wheat, and eating more good fats. It’s too soon for me to say I’ve had much success with the advice but I’m managing to reduce my carbohydrates now, without cutting them altogether, and feeling better than I did at first – I was pretty down and irritable going ‘cold turkey’.

am intrigued by your mention of a Boditrax scan. If it’s OK to ask, how, where can you get 1 of these? @ a gym? my gym doesn’t do such things & have tried a search in my local area but nothing found
would appreciate any help on this

Hi Sal
Firstly, well done on making a positive change in starting the BSD today. Try to ditch the wine for the 8wks of the BSD, or keep it to the very occasional 100ml glass and add the cals and carbs into your daily allowance. As far as meal plans go, you could follow the one in the book. However, if you want to create your own meal plan, think in terms of a protein source and green veggies or salad for main meals; my go to is full fat yogurt for breakfast, with various toppings to ring the changes day on day and lunch tends to be egg or cheese based – today for instance, I lined a bun tin with lean thin cut ham, dropped a few grams of chopped up cheddar in the bottom and topped with one large whisked egg, then baked in the oven until set. Other days, I’ll have salad or use gem lettuce leafs instead of bead, and add various toppings.
Take a look at the recipes on the website too, as there is plenty of inspiration there too. Hope you manage to put together something that suits your palette and life style.
Good luck with it all …

on 16 Jan 2017 at 15:17 in Fast 800Sounds like everyone is doing REALLY WELL!! Well done everyone! Also it’s encouraging, in a way, that everyone is losing at at different rate, but everyone is losing! It works!!
So it was my 1 week weigh-in today (even though I ummed and erred about whether I should weigh myself at all after slow start). I have lost 3 lbs. Not too bad. Not nearly as exciting as some but it’s a hearty rate at which to loose if I can keep it up. I kept to the 800 every day more or less and I fasted about 3 of the days (no breakfast). So it’s going pretty well. I have always found it hard to loose weight so I will be pleased with 3lbs.
Above all I am feeling very well. Clear headed. Light, in a lovely way, especially in the mornings when I fast. Less obsessed with food (although 6pm hunger strikes hard still) and finding my feet with easy dishes for myself – which I have to prepare in addition to cooking food for the rest of my family, who won’t eat anything I do! They are a fussy lot… So that is an extra challenge/temptation each day. I have a vegan and two carb-loving carnivores to cater for… Give me strength!
Hope everyone is feeling motivated by their first week results – and therefore excited for this second week. If I can loose another 3 or so lbs then I will already be down half a stone. Not bad! It’s not torture and in fact I feel well. Fingers crossed.

posted by michaelmas daisy on My relationship with alcohol
on 16 Jan 2017 at 15:10 in BSD Way of LifeI’ve reduced the amount of wine I drink at home to about a 60ml measure which is alot less than a 125ml measure deemed a ‘small’ glass in pubs and restaurants. Some places start with 150 -175ml small glasses. I take more time over it, and if drinking when out, sometimes just leave a third of the wine in a pub measure. At family gatherings I secretly chuck a bit away. I don’t have alcohol every day now, so that I get alcohol-free days. I always have some food with wine, and some water on the side. That said, I’m quite capable of drinking to excess, and of drinking every evening. Alcoholic drinks are very enticing – so much choice and variety – but alcohol doesn’t particularly suit me and I’m quickly affected by it – hence my need to restrict it and drink very modestly.

I started 10th of January and my goal is to loose another 20 kg and end up at 73 kg. So far I have lost 3 kg during my first 6 Days which is probably not only a coincidence. I have a heriditary high cholesterol and my grandfather had diabetes typ 2. Prior to this I tried weight-watchers wich worked ok while I followed the program a couple of years ago to get rid of the weight I put on after my second Childs birth. But I then I gained it back on again…I have not followed the 800 kcl diet strictly but it seems possible and I am so happy to be back on track again!
Happy monday to all of you!
