Yes, coffee is good for you if you count the milk. I still have skimmed as it is what hubby buys for himself and I only use a tiny drop each day (1 cup of coffee daily) the rest of the time I have green tea and water.

  • That’s exactly right, Verano. I definitely think of myself as a lowcarbetarian now. I used to be like your daughter. We’re all so used to grain products being the base or accompaniment of every meal that any dish without bread, pasta, rice, etc. seems incomplete. I suspect the carbers see the lowcarbetarians as hobbled, amputees who make do the best they can with this terrible tragic emptiness. That’s the mindset that drives some of us right back into the arms of the white poison as soon as the 8 weeks are up or we’ve lost a lot of weight and feel like we can loosen the chains a little bit.

I don’t see it that way anymore. I love the food I eat. My OH, who has always been easily fit and can eat truly prodigious amounts of whatever he wants without gaining more than the occasional pound here or there, loves it too. I get him a sweet treat from a local bakery once a week during my walks and have never once been even remotely tempted by them. Same with bread and pasta which I used to eat every other day.

That way of eating is well and truly over for me. I have worked way too hard and come way too far to be lured onto the shoals by the siren song of carbohydrates. I am insulin resistant and do not process sugars the way normal people do. That is a fact and it’s not going away. I spent 15 years avoiding and denying reality. Now I’ve finally faced it and made the changes I needed to to live an active and healthy life. After that, declining to eat a bagel is no challenge at all.

If you want a good read to support your low carb mindset, get a copy of Dr. Perlmutter’s book “Grain Brain”. I found it gave me good reasons to stay low carb and it has good advice regarding feeding children too.
He also has the Grain Brain Cookbook which has several recipes we love to eat.

Thanks Theodora and Switzerland , good to see you are still around! Whatever happened to Frog, Izzie, LuckyM.. and Captainlynne? Anyone seen any posts from them recently? Hope they are all fine and getting on with life.

I agree Cper, the odd carb doesn’t hurt, but only if I don’t start like I used to when I gave up smoking! Just at Christmas, just on my birthday, just on Fridays, Just at weekends, just in the evenings! I THINK my will powers is stronger now, but I’m not entirely sure. I did well today at the family do though, resisted my potatoes and the trifle and the cake. Ate a big pot of cream though!

At least I gave up smoking in the end. And if I can do that, I can live without carbs.

  • Anything that helps Judiffj!! I have had to eliminate certain things from my diet – stuff which I am addicted to and I think also quite sensitive to – wheat and dairy! I take my hat off to you for being able to spit it out – I’d be like a dog with a bone at that stage I think – “you’re not having it!!” lol.

  • Hi there, I started 3 weeks ago and I’ve lost 15.5 lbs. I’ve never lost this amount of weight so quickly before, AND it’s come off my stomach. I actually have a waist back. I have tried all sorts of diets and failed. I use the my fitness pal website and track everything. I bought the cookery book and thats been a god send. The food is so tasty and it takes the guesswork out of meal planning. I’ve also increased my activity and have a personal trainer twice a week. The only craving I have had is for bread. To overcome this, I’ve taken a small amount and chewed it a couple of times and then spat is out. Sounds disgusting I know, but it helped.

Ok just to add I eat very few eggs and lose weight. Lots of other foods without eggs.

  • Oh my. Feeling a bit despondent today. Have looked it up and to maintain my current weight I can have 1500 calories per day. That’s it. For the rest of my life. Wow!

Now I know that CAN actually be a lot of food. This WOE has taught me that. It’s just that years of yo yo diets had 1500 as the magic number to lose 1-2lbs per week. I figured on more when I reached goal. Guess that’s why I got so big in the first place 🤣🤣

So, definitely no more booze for me. It stimulates my appetite, smashes my willpower and upsets my stomach and quite frankly I’d rather eat my calories!!!

Sunday obviously the day of revelations. H66, you are probably right. I’m blaming Mary and Jovis! 🤣

  • I don’t drink any alcohol at all these day, not for at least 15 years. I use to be a limited social drinker and I enjoyed wine, mainly noble reds and s few decent whites and the odd pint. My decision wasn’t because of a problem with alcohol, it was due to me having to take warfrin and statins. Even a half a pint of decent cider or a single glass of a good red would give me a hangover for days, worse than that, I really felt ill. I only had a few sips at social events or celebrations. I steered clear of the stuff.
I was, and am, pretty fit for my age and we live mainly on a mediterranean-style diet, and also have crazy Collie who needs regular walks.
The reason for my first set of blood clots is a mystery as I was a regular gym “goer” and I was training for a London marathon when I had my first.
However, I have recently stopped taking the statins as I firmly believe that this is the reason why I had been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes (March 2017). Since then I have doing the BSD diet. I didn’t need to loose much weight and as I’m doing well with the diet my doctor has halved my medication and it looks like I’ll be able to stop altogether, if everything goes according to plan.
Since stopping the statins I had the occasion to have a glass of wine on our anniversary. I was surprised that I had no side effects the next day. Another reason to stop taking statins.
Plus a few days ago there was an announcement on Radio 4’s Today programme of some studies into alcohol and type 2 diabetes. Apparently a few drinks spread over a week is beneficial to ones health and actually holds type 2 diabetes at bay. This contradicts the advice that alcohol is not advisable.

    Any ideas?

Not much to report, ate totally off plan again at lunch time and my system is starting to rebel (gastro issues).

The plan is to commit to August fully…. one day at a time.

July’s daily average is less than 1000 calories so I am proper chuffed with that.

Happyfeet you get into the swing of this WOE after a time and it does become easier. Our problem here, I think, is that we’ve been following the BSD for so long we’ve become a bit stale and maybe fallen into a rut, so we have to keep lifting ourselves !

I agree s-g no point in risking it but I was just wondering because you can stay low calorie but with higher carbs especially by reintroducing more fruit. Thanks Jenni I think you just reconfirmed my thoughts that I have to stay away from those simple carbs which I really don’t want to eat anyway.

My daughter and grandsons were here overnight and at breakfast my daughter asked me how I can ‘go without bread’ , they were tucking into bagels whilst I just treated myself to two ryvita! I really didn’t have an answer but it made me think, it’s the same as asking a vegetarian ‘how they manage without meat”. We know we can!

I guess carbs really are the monster and weight loss is the added bonus when we eat low carb/ healthy fat which, I must admit, I find a much more satisfying way to eat.

Well that was a monumental fuck up.

I managed to stick with it until about half an hour after my last post. I had a packet of plain hula hoops as the alcohol has gone straight to my head. And then I succumbed to the carb cravings that caused. And I ate lots. And the next day I ate lots. But mostly only when I was hungry. But no-one needs marshmallows in quite that quantity. Lots of roasted veg and the chicken skewers were lovely but had sausages and white bread too. Porridge for breakfast Saturday and today which was really good and filling and I’ll definitely do next week when we go again.

It made me feel awful. Really, really awful. Bloated and gassy (no fun in a tent!) and actually a bit depressed. I slept worse than I usually do while camping.

So I’m trying to move on. Lesson learned, straight back on plan today. I am feeling much more positive about our next camping trip as I know what worked and when the tricky bits were. Definitely no more drinking for the rest of the 8 weeks.

It’s been surprisingly easy to get back on it today. I have logged everything on MFP and have a good plan for supper. I feel relieved to be feeling hunger again.

Anyway, sorry for the epic post. Tried to log on for support a few times over the weekend but coverage was patchy. Next campsite has WiFi so you won’t be able to get rid of me at all!

Hi guys! i just started, end of first week is tomorrow. So impressed with the “get back on the horse” attitude! Don’t take this the wrong way but it’s nice to see that everyone else goes through “800 cals grrrr” days as well. It’s not an easy thing to do but you guys are doing great, sunshine girl amazing progress on the BG front!! I am hoping to get better at this, first week has been up and down but feeling a bit optimistic about it! Sunshine girl commented on my thread and it is so true, keep on carrying on and try to get it mostly right. Thats my mantra for the next 8 weeks.

Thanks sunshine girl! Totally agree! I lost a substantial amount of weight a few years ago and piled it all back on as soon as I cracked and broke my diet. I have really healthy fasting blood sugars (range from about 4.4 to 5.4) so this is preventative for me and have 4 stone to lose so this may take a little while. I want to be able to keep on keeping on rather than having the “I’m either on a diet or off a diet and stuffing my face” mindset.

On another note I downloaded happy scale and so far am loving it! It’s quite motivating clearly seeing a downward trend.

  • Hi Verano, re your question of gaining weight and the effect on BGLs. I have gained almost half my lost 14 Kgs back (found them only too easily after about 6 months at the lower weight) However my Diabetes is still in remission. I was very strict in the first 8 weeks which seems to have reset my pancreas for now. My weight gain isn’t due to carbing but due to absurd amounts of non-carb foods with the very occasional breakout on carbs. When I have had some grain based carbs I test about 4 times in the next couple of hours and stay in the acceptable range. After a crazy eating binge of non-carb or some carbs I do notice my next mornings fasting BGL is up a little but not much. Trying hard to get back on the 800 BSD train as I really don’t want to stuff up my diabetes again.

Hello fellow Soldiers , good to meet you Inka , please don’t feel ashamed for trying to solve your emotional hard times with food and alcohol , we’ve all done it and we will probably do it again , I almost did as recently as last night .
I had a bad day yesterday , & a night of insomnia to follow , mind wouldn’t switch off , almost wishing I had some wine to ‘ wined ( wind ) me down , thought crossed my mind many times over , perhaps I should just get up and have a glass of wine , only for its relaxing and sedative effects of course , question was though would it be a good idea ?
As time passed by , another hour , then another , then another , my darling lying beside me blissfully unaware , snoring his dear old head off , not making it any easier , so it was getting very close to being a really good idea and then …..
I saw her clearly , there she was …. Our 5 Star General Liz , appeared out of nowhere at my time of need , momentarily I felt like a guilty little kid , so I shrank down under the doona , hoping she wouldn’t see me , & decided that was probably not a good idea after all !
I wondered what she’d say to me , it came to me that she would suggest linking arms , and marching it out .
I pictured us all supposedly marching it out & what I saw was so comical , I felt like laughing aloud .
I saw us all ambling along at different paces , all totally out of step , some of us more agile than others , different shapes and sizes , some short , some tall like our 5 Star General , looking more like a bunch of misfits , rather than a respected Army Unit !
What I felt though was the best , there we were all hanging onto each other for dear life , and no one was going to fall !
I must have drifted off with that thought , I don’t remember , but I do know I awoke feeling energised , despite the lack of sleep for most of the night .
Our march of the uncoordinated , was the best sedative , so thanks heaps everyone .
So glad you and Jovis had a great Anniversary Mary , the meals sounded delish , & the wine , so good that you can have it now and again without it beckoning you over and over 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Every time I think of Jovis and Mary , I’m reminded of a lovely Bible story about Mary and Joseph , & just wonder….

    Left wondering ,
    H 66

It’s gone very quiet on this thread – how is everyone doing now we’re nearly at the end of Week 8? My partner and I have both lost a stone in weight – ok, not as rapid as we’d hoped, but a stone in 8 weeks is still pretty good going, and we feel so much better for it: knees less creaky, guts healthier, mood brighter. So we’re going to carry on with this new healthy eating. We already have our favourite recipes but are enjoying the journey exploring new ones. And now we are feeling better generally we can start upping the activities and exercise, so hopefully the weight will keep dropping. How about you?

Oookey so have been umming and ahhing about giving this a go and thought why not. Was trying IF with one meal a day which came out at about 800 cals for the day or thereabouts so thought lets make it official. Part of the reason I am specifically interested to the BSD is that diabetes runs in the family and I’m basically obese (I haaaate that word but it is what it is), so probably only a matter of time.

Soooo ,not been going fantastically truth be told in terms of cals. I started on the 24th but went up to 1200 cals, since then managed 4 days under 800 and one day at 1800 and today will probably end up being about 1200. Good thing is the days between those high days is getting longer. So earlier this week there was only 1 day between higher cals, now it’s been three days between high cal days. Aim is to work my way up. I’m not going hell for leather on this to be honest, I think I’m more likely to comply for the majority of the time over 8 weeks if I don’t get too upset about breaking the diet and jacking it all in. Started at 182.4lbs (5ft 2in) currently 176.6lbs and 1st week weigh in is tomorrow. I would like to be able to lose a stone (also hypothyroid but well controlled) over the next 8 weeks. I have unfortunately got a weekend away booked in for this weekend am going to try to stick to one meal a day, I expect it to be quite boozy but as I said I’m trying to be relaxed about this and see it as a temp pit stop. Will updated weigh in tomorrow.

I have the odd 3 egg omelette , or the occasional hard boiled one in a salad Nicoise, but other than that I don’t really have them. I lost 47lbs (am now in maintenance) so you can lose weight quite easily on BSD without eating eggs. Good luck.

Yes I’m the same as you V, regained another pound since yesterday but know it was the wine. Your question about BG and weight gain, I am not sure a lot of people on this diet are diabetics whereas in the beginning most of us were, it is the BSD after all. But, I have found if I go off the rails and overeat calories but still stay away from carbs my BG is affected but only slightly. I would say the carbs are the main cause of high BG and I cant bring myself to eat them besides the odd slice of artisan bread (not the gloopy white sliced stuff). Maybe some of the returners are diabetic and can advise you better but my view is why risk it and surely the weight regain would be down to reintroducing carbs so that is a double whammy.

As for messing with my meds, I am the one who decided that constant low BG in the afternoon was caused by the G tablets and I decided to reduce them. Same with the insulin. But if I want to increase the G, I would have to talk to my doctor as he reduced my prescription so I wouldn’t have enough to take more. It was just a thought, I know I dont get very low in the afternoon now. But here is a thought, at one time I would have freaked out if my BG was lower than 80 (4.4) but now I test and it is around 65 (3.6) and I just think oh well I will be eating shortly or if it is more than half an hour to dinner I might have a piece of cold ham or a couple of prunes, but it certainly doesn’t worry me now. Optimum BG is between 80 and 120 and I freak more if it is over 120.

Got in 30 mins swimming yesterday (so why is my weight up) and might just jump in right now. Bye for now.

  • Morning team!

Mary, I’m delighted you and the lovely Jovis kicked back and enjoyed your special evening. Congrats on your anniversary.

Inka, no shame here. The reason we are all so open and amusingly honest is the fact that we don’t judge each other. It’s a totally safe, supportive environment and it keeps me sane. Link with us. You won’t regret it.

Weekly weigh in for me today and it’s a 600gram gain for me. I’m expecteding some fluctuations while my body gets used to the increase in calories. I’m giving it a week and if it’s another gain next week then I shall reassess.

Have a great day everyone xx

    Good morning

The last few days have been a bit odd for me but as I’ve just posted on another thread I gained 3lb on the scales this morning since yesterday! There is no way that’s ‘fat’ . I had two kippers for brunch with cherry tomatoes, a few Brazil nuts, then a Greek meal of chicken kebab, salad, tzatsiki and olives, lots of olives, and just one glass of red. I’m sure all the salt has led to water retention so today I’m going to drink loads more water. Also I think I should pay less attention to the numbers!

I wonder if anybody can answer this question. There seem to be quite a number of ‘returners’ who lost weight over the last year but have regained, maybe not all the weight, but a significant amount. Not one of them mentions diabetes. My question is really I wonder if your blood sugar rises again if you put weight on again without necessarily having a carb overload? Most people seem to notice a very quick drop in BS eating low carb before they have lost a significant amount of weight. I think maybe we need to concentrate more on the carbs and less on the weight possibly??

Sunshine-girl I think you should speak to your dishy doctor! I don’t think anybody should alter medication without professional help because sometimes there are several factors to be taken into account, and we are just laymen, they are the professionals. For example, when I had cellulitis I also had an attack of gout. I know it was gout even though I’d never had it before. I wanted to taken one of my OHs pills for gout but the doctor insisted on coming out to see me. It was gout but apparently it could have been a complication of the cellulitis which would have required completely different treatment. Don’t self medicate.

Hope everyone is doing better than me but I’ll still be here for the weigh-in on Tuesday irrespective of the result!

  • Week 46,47, and 48 done and dusted. Put on 0.3kg kg week 46 then lost 0.3kg week 47 and then put on 0.6kg week 48. Which takes me up to 103kg. Been hectic month with alot of stress with buying a new house and trying to pack for our move on 19th Aug. My 99kg goal seems so far away, getting frustrated but still not bloody giving up…have a good one all!

  • Esnecca all I can say is that you’re an absolute inspiration. That’s an amazing amount to lose and to be still going. I have another 50 or so pounds to lose and I will but I have to realise that it will take me more time if I’m to adopt this way of life for ever. My daughter was just asking this morning how I manage without bread. They were all chomping away on bagels whilst I allowed myself two ryvita with cream cheese and smoked salmon and a pickled gherkin. You know I had no answer for her. It’s just my way of eating now and I guess it’s similar to asking a vegetarian how they manage without meat …. it’s just a choice. Our choice!

Thank you everyone for your good wishes. Jovis and I had a lovely evening. We enjoy each others company and it is quite a rare thing for us to go out.

Keeping the BSD in mind, I had Dover Sole and vegetables and Jovis had Steak Rossini. He has supported me so much throughout this Way of Life, that he no longer eats potatoes, rice or pasta. He still has bread of course and last night he ate the Roast Potatoes (although not many as his tastes have changed).

We were home by 9:30 and in bed an hour later. Thank you again for your good wishes. Back on the plan today though.

  • Good morning

Well my labneh is dripping merrily into a bowl over the sink and I’m going to make Ottolenghi’s olive mixture later.

I have gained nearly 3lb according to my scales since yesterday! I know this isn’t possible. So two lessons learnt really. The first is not to rely so heavily on the numbers and the second Is to take more notice of salty foods. Yesterday I had 2 kippers for brunch with some cherry tomatoes, a few Brazil nuts ( the rest are waiting to be spiced Esnecca!), and then last night a Greek meal that was salad, tzatsiki, chicken and olives, with one glass of red. So no way we’re there over 9000 extra calories which would account for the gain. It must be fluid retention from all the salt …. kippers and olives….! Today I’ll up my water intake to hopefully compensate for yesterday.

Marsie your burgers sound lovely and I’m really pleased to get the tzatsiki tip. Now when we have an Indian takeaway I have chicken tikka with a homemade salad and a yogurt dressing so your tzatsiki would be a far better accompaniment.

Hope you are all having a good weekend.

Just want to give out encouragement. I started this way of eating in august last year and it really worked for me- I lost 2 stone pretty quickly and have kept it off without struggle The thing is I eat bread, cakes ,drink alcohol etc but occasionally-and then return to what I know to be the healthier way! When I started I kept a diary which included my mood as well as measurements and food diary. Half the battle Ithink is the mindfulness. Relax. Dont panic if you eat a slice of toast . Be nice to yourself and see it all as proactive and not denial. It works

    Hi Inka,

I am going to add my bit here too. I lapsed last night. Jovis and I shared 2 bottles of wine. I used to drink that on my own, now I have learned to share lol. It is not an easy thing to do…BUT it CAN BE DONE! Eventually you will see the light and stop sabotaging yourself. You have to take heart that you are human and flawed as we all are. There is no perfect person or personality. We are fed an idea from media and other people of who and what and how we should be. What really, really matters is what you want. I used to think I wanted to drink..but I realised it was a habit that was in control of me, once I became in control of IT, I became better in lots of ways.

The idea of one day at a time isn’t mine. It’s from Alcoholics Anonymous. They say just go one day without a drink, everyone can do one day. Then do another day. I amend it to…I will drink on my terms and not as a crutch. Another mantra is …one is too much and two is too many. At our meal last night (which was fantastic and thank you everyone for your best wishes) we had Prosecco, which is like drinking pop…so we both necked it. Back to sobriety today. I also have to say, that although I enjoyed it at the time. I really wish I hadn’t had it. There are very subtle ways that I am not so good today. It really is Satan’s Piss!

Chin up chuck….we are here for you and there is a space next to me where you can link arms. We can all march arm in arm knowing that we are humans and all that entails.

    Lots of love,
    Nonna Mary

Research shows that those who keep the weight off for a year are far more likely to be able to keep it off forever so here’s to the rest of your life. 😃

Thank you Inka13. I think that. once past the 3rd day of hunger, it gets much easier and the hunger diminishes or becomes a positive sign of weight loss . I’ll dig out my excellent recipe book for inspiration, clear out the fridge, start making yoghurt sgain and stock up on healthy food. Good luck Inka13.

155.0lbs today, 0.6lbs up on last month, 1lb more than last year. But hey, 1lb more than last year! That means I’ve maintained, more or less for over a year now. This is a first for me. Sorry to sound smug, but I am pleased with myself!

Although, to be honest, I’m posting a day early as I’m off to a family affair later, where I will over indulge, although not in a carby way. Just eat too much! And in a rather saintly way, I was asked to make a dish of dauphinois potato, which I have, even though I can’t eat it!

Very best of luck to everyone still on the weight loss journey and congratulations to all those maintainer who are still here!

Barbarar, I am the same! I started last October and did well, then not so much!
I pretty much restart every day now! Had a bit of a mental breakthrough today though and am going to try my heart out from now on because I feel so great when I eat this way and honestly it’s often just I can’t find the energy to plan out my food some days so I grab that evil quick fix!! Then there’s the wine…😩
But! It stops now and I’m sure we can both do it. It’s just getting back into the habit and one day at a time..
I’ve dug out some green tea and I found it suppressed my appetite and I know it’s great for weight loss so I can recommend! Best of luck.

    Hi everyone,
Haven’t posted for ages, have been too ashamed! The last few weeks have been really hard emotionally and I caved in to wine and bread, and more wine….and on it went! No real craving for carbs but more about quick and easy with no planning or thought needed!
Anyaway, although I don’t feel qualified to stand arm in arm with you all, I have been reading your posts every day and as usual they make me laugh and you are all doing so well that I am proud of you! They have also kept me inspired to keep going each day even if that day ends badly.
Today I have taken back control and I feel like I might be able to do it this time.
Joes Nona, I am taking to heart something you said about not having a drink ‘today’ then repeating. Simple but brilliant! So here I go again and hope to have something positive to report soon.
    Inka
PS Joes Nona – happy anniversary you crazy kids!

Good (Aus) morning to all you wonderful women!

What comes through all the recent posts..Liz, Mary (Happy Anniversary!!) Lee, madmare, crabbycrams, ffbb (Ancient Weaver..love the name!) and H66 (hope I didn’t miss anyone)….is that our fundamental priorities are sound!!
I also said yes to a glass of bubbles the other night when a friend’s grand-daughter was born while we were all (a bunch of old buddies of over 20 years) having dinner together…her son phoned from Singapore, so with the wonders of modern technology we all saw the brand newbie in all her gorgeousness.

Had a bit of a work breakthrough yesterday, so my anxiety levels are dropping….

Its a glorious, sunny, late winter Sunday here. I’ve been to the farmers market with a mate and will go with Michael and the black and white personal trainer for a long walk in the bush this afternoon.

Like you, Liz, we are living in chaos …..but in the scheme of a life, it’s OK….much to be grateful for!

I’m allergic to eggs. It looks like they are important for fast weight loss. What’s the best substitute for eggs?

  • Well, I started off a couple of months ago-ish, following 800 cals a day and writing everything down. I have since relaxed with the recording of everything and am into a really good sustainable way of eating – something I could easily do for the rest of my life. I’ve lost in total 19lbs and am about a third of the way there – yaayy!!! I’m thinking more about some of the foods that I’m eating which I think cause me to bloat – pretty sure dairy should be off limits really so am planning on eating the rest of the catering pack (!) of full fat natural yogurt and not buy any more! Trying to do more vegetarian meals too as a lot of veggie recipes give me a wonderful taste explosion which I really need! Thanks for asking!

    Thanks, SunnyB!
I can generally survive the days but it’s the evenings when things go to pot. An over-fondness for salt & vinegar crisps & ice cream is my Achilles heel. Plus I comfort eat – recently I’ve been worrying about my sister (she’s had problems with her eyesight – recently diagnosed as a rare form of glaucoma, the likelihood is she has permanently lost some vision in one eye). She’s been there for me when I had health problems so it’s my turn to step up to the plate to help her.
I have been keeping an eye on the thread you mention, and thanks for the suggestion on the book.

Anyway, a decision has been made – tomorrow is the day I make a batch of hummus!

    Take care,
    Rose
