There is little difference in the calorie/carb content between ordinary potatoes and sweet potatoes – in 100g the former contains 97 cals to 21.4g and the later 90 cals to 21.7g – so my advice would be to avoid both in any real quantity, i.e. a full portion. The odd chip or wedge would be fine, but I wouldn’t include a full size portion.

Courgetti would be great, but might not be readily available – unless you are self-catering of course.

I agree with Californiagirl, getting to where the BSD way of eating is your ‘default’ setting and part of your life style, is where you want to get to. It’s important not to think of this as ‘a diet’, because it’s actually going to be a way of life. There IS no going back to eating the way you used to, otherwise your will eventually be back at square one. It is eating in a certain way, that has brought you to the point of wanting to lose weight and choosing to try the BSD.

So, in the meantime as long as you try to get more days on the 800 cals than over and even on the days over, try to stick to the BSD principles, you should find that the pounds fall. Don’t panic when things go wrong – get on the forum and vent your frustrations, someone will be around to bolster your flagging resolve and offer encouragement. What’s important, is to keep trying and just getting back on track as soon as you can after transgressing.

Best of luck to you – you are already seeing results, so keep right on doing what you’re doing.

A good Greek salad with feta and olives would be ideal, but as long as you apply the BSD principles as far as possible, you shouldn’t go far wrong. Choose a protein with veggies or salads and avoid rice, potatoes, bread and pasta as far as you are able.

Remember though, that this is a holiday and part of life, so allow yourself some latitude and enjoy the odd non-BSD treat if you desire – a small ice cream, the occasional glass of wine. If you are prudent when it comes to the carbs, you will probably not put on more than a pound or two. Oh, and don’t forget to keep the hydration up – even more important in the heat.

Have a lovely break and come back fired up to get back to another round of 8wks at 800!

I go to kefalonia on 9th for a fortnight. I’d like some useful substitutes generally please but esp that I can ask for in Greece – Google translate here I come!
I won’t be a a.m. about it but certainly will make gd choices where I can.

Hi Happyfeet — I think it is common to be “all or nothing” — on the diet 100% or as you say, stuffing your face” — there is actually some research on the perfectionist thing and trouble with sticking with a diet (it creates a “what the hell” mindset and folk just give up). Sort of a black/white scenario.
So now I recommend finding the grey area — and the BSD is the perfect diet here because it works even when you blow it as long as you just start again…and again and again! It also continues to work when you don’t hit the 800 calorie target every day so just keep going, good or bad or in between, don’t quit.
And in a while, it won’t even BE a diet anymore, it will become your new mindset and your “default”. You are going to amaze yourself.

Thank you both. I see it’s a good idea to state some goals and I really like the carbs/protein/fat goals. So – I’m 73 kg and it would be fantastic to lose 10kg but I’m not sure that’s feasible in 8 weeks so I’m going to aim for 8kg loss in 8 weeks.
    Here we go.

  • Welcome Tooey — it’s going to get a lot better very soon — you’re transitioning to fat burning and that takes a bit of time. Keep your carbs very low (20 grams/day) if you can — it will snap you quickly into a very active fat metabolism.

    Hey guys,

Sorry I’ve been awol but been trying to focus hard. Just suck at this whole being disciplined thing. I never manage to stick to diets for long so its a miracle I’ve managed this. I’ve nearly lost my 10% just a couple of pounds to go. Had a few health issues this week that were unexpected but nothing caused by the diet.

  • Hi Tooey, – yes, sounds like ‘carb-flu’ and many of us on here have been through it. Hold on in there and it will pass – sometimes within a couple of days, sometimes a bit longer, but once you’re through, the terrible carb-cravings gradually disappear. However, be aware that it is also very easy to re-trigger the cravings if you ‘indulge’. There is some interesting stuff in the Clever Guts book about how our gut biome actually affects what we crave, simply put, the sugar-loving gut inhabiters cause cravings to make sure you ‘feed’ them. The Clever Guts book sits so well alongside this WOE, I would definitely recommend reading that too to get the big (or rather, very small) picture.
Incidentally, if you have also given up caffeine, as a lot of people do on this diet, caffeine withdrawal is hideous! I went cold turkey some years ago and ended up having a day off work (and I am never ill!) – I thought I had got flu. Even mild withdrawal can cause headaches and nausea.
Good luck with the plan – there are so many really inspirational and supportive peeps on these forums, they’ll keep you on track.

So I have a stone to lose – not a massive amount but I feel enough of a bloater to get shot of all this extra lard I’ve been carrying around for almost two years now. I’m also completely addicted to bread/carbs and need to do something about it PDQ. So I’m on day 3 of TBSD and I’m feeling really irritable, a bit shakey and rather lethargic. Is this normal? Am I just coming down off my carb/sugar addiction? Anyone’s experience of similar would be appreciated!

Hey skinnydave – I guess it depends if you are diabetic, pre-diabetic or just doing the diet to lose weight and improved health & wellbeing. I’m in the latter section and bought a monitor when I started on the BSD, simply because I thought this would be another measure of progress and I also wanted to see where things sat at the beginning. I found that my blood sugars were to the higher end of the ‘normal’ zone and it was interesting to monitor on a daily basis for the first few weeks, however after the first month, I reduced this and now (over a year in) just do the occasional check – maybe once a week to ten days or so. These I weight and do a ketostick check daily, but only check waist measurement and blood sugar when I think about it. For info, the monitor I bought was around the ยฃ15 mark (I think), yes supplies are a bit pricey but not too bad, especially given that I only checked daily for a short time.

I think Lloyds offer a cholesterol checking service, but I don’t know about blood sugar checks. Guess it would be worth a few phone calls to major chains near you, to see if they offer anything. However, if you are doing the BSD for weight reduction, I would say there is no great need to be checking your blood sugars on a frequent basis, but to use weight and body measurements is a fair way to track progress.

Whatever you decide to do, best of luck and I hope you will be posting great results soon.

This morning, I started the last of my 8 weeks at 800 calories weighing in at 16st 8lbs, for a loss of exactly 3 stone in 7 weeks. I was expecting to lose weight quickly on the BSD, but I’m astounded that I’ve been averaging 6lbs weekly!

There’s not much to report on this week. I’ve been able to maintain my increased activity levels from last week and, for the most part, it hasn’t left me feeling too hungry or tired. I’m really pleased with having lost 3 stone, and am interested to see where I end up by the time I’m eating enough calories for a steady, slow weight loss.

    7 weeks down, 1 to go. Starting weight 19st 8lbs, current weight 16st 8lbs.

  • Some really delicious ideas there Bissell, shall definitely be trying out some of those. Having some ways to zing up side dishes, can make all the difference to a meal. The last couple of evenings, I’ve fried off shredded cabbage in a little butter with garlic, but it didn’t occur to me to add anything else. Certainly will be tonight!

Sorry I have been rather lax about adding to this thread, but it’s been a grandchildren week, so time for my stuff has been in short supply – indeed, as a result of that I’ve been on a maintenance week really. Need to get my head together this week though and push forward, before we do the grandchildren’s camping in two weeks time. Still hovering just off my target weight.

Anyway, will definitely try to add something interesting on here this week – promise!

  • Hi Verona. Lunch sounds delicious. I found a new (to me) way with seeds the other day. I dry roasted a mix of seeds and added to the pan slices of goats cheese, which became coated with seeds and softened slightly. Excellent with salad.

I do a leek curry, finely sliced, gently fried in coconut oil (or whatever), then add turmeric, chilli and fish sauce. Cover and cook on low heat for 30 mins. Lush.

Mallung is a fairly standard Sri Lankan staple, shredded greens of some kind (cabbage, kale, spinach etc.) washed and put in saucepan with finely chopped spring onions, chopped green chillies, turmeric, fish sauce, splash of lemon juice, s and p, cook for 5 mins with just the water from washing the leaves, sprinkle with a tablespoon of desiccated coconut and stir until water absorbed by coconut.

Shredded cabbage, stir fried with carrots and chilli in mustard seeds, garlic and chilli, then add splash of lemon and chopped coriander.

Thinly sliced aubergines, rubbed with salt and turmeric, , fried in coconut oil, then mix with chopped chili sliced spring onions, a splash of lemon, and a couple of spoonfuls of coconut milk.

Fry off sliced Spring onions/leeks, garlic, ginger, chilli. Add tablespoon curry powder, or a mix of your favourites, and some grated tomatoes, fry to a paste. Add cauli flowerets, s and p, extra turmeric and cover and cook until soft. Add splash lemon juice, maybe some green coriander or garaj masala.

Right, I’m starving now! Definitely curry for tea. Just back from the allotment with green beans and cabbage, so sometihing along those lines, maybe with some chilli prawns.

    Have a good day.

    Hiya – I am re-starting!!

I did 8 weeks in January/February and lost 2 stone – although I have kept the weight off I have been slowly letting carbs creep back into my diet and my lumpy tummy has returned – funny how just by allowing this to happen my body shape has completely changed. Time to do something about it – don’t want all my nice new clothes that I bought to get too tight!!

I am re-starting tomorrow and I am looking forward to getting everything back under control – first goal as I currently weigh 13st3lb (i’m 5ft3″), is to get into the 12’s… something I didn’t manage last time… then it is to get to 12st 7… and then it’s to be able to buy a size 12!!

Lot’s of 12’s going on lol!!

Let’s all do this together :o)

    Much Love,

    Happy Monday all.

Pleased to report that I ran Saturday and Sunday, food choices were sensible (well, apart from a mini jaffa cake!) and I have sensible food in the office. The key for me is not taking on too much at work – losing a day a week has made a huge difference to my emotional state (not frazzled) and consequently better self control with food choices. Even though I only stopped the extra day on Friday, I slept vastly better Saturday night, so much so I was up late last night being super productive at home! How people manage to do BSD with incredibly stressful lives is a wonder to me. The task for me is to avoid taking on more work – with the situation at home (teenagers not out of that nasty phase!) sticking to part time work is key for me, with all the running around I do at weekends ferrying one across the country to play sports, not to mention the housework and hosting foreign students, it feels like I do more than full time hours!

I really hope that Onetowatch has encouraging scale news this week, and that S-G you can reduce insulin further soon – seems to me that every time you reduce your body adapts to it anyway and sugars remain stable.

  • Good morning, this is my first time on this forum. I just discovered the BSD book and one of my main difficulties when following any diet is my love of G&T. I am known to all of our friends as the gin aficionado, I have a special cupboard (for crying out loud) to keep all of my wonderful craft gins. I don’t have an Advent calendar I have a Ginvent calendar at Christmas. A day doesn’t pass without several glasses of the diamond spirit. However, I have decided enough is enough ….. time to take stock. I am hoping that this is the turning point. It’s not going to be easy as my hubby and I are both party animals, we have a frantic social lifestyle and there is always another social event on the horizon. No more excuses! I will read this forum for inspiration and I will post from time to time and let you all know how I’m doing on this rocky road.

Hi, I started on Saturday and so far so good. Not obese or pre-diabetic but just looking to reduce the stomach fat, 36 inch waist on a 5’9 inch guy is not good and also to reduce fat in my liver and pancreas which must be there. Currently 82kg and hoping to get down to 70kg by the end of the 8 weeks. Eating real food and sticking to 800 cals or less. I’m using MyFitnessPal to track the food I eat and I think that is helping. Breaking the 800 calories into this ratio:

    Carbs: 40g = 160 Cals
    Protein: 80g = 320 Cals
    Fat: 36g = 320 Cals

    Good luck!

Hello fellow warriors. Today the website is allowing me to post.

Love all the posts of successes varied and joyful and the anniversary.

Had a challenging weekend carb wise. Lots of travelling, sleeping badly, tired, and hangry so reached for easy fix = bread, albeit with capsicum, cheese and garlic spread on it. Then with Vegeimite, then with marmalade, then with some very old, but delicious, quince jelly that has almost become paste. BS readings reflected the addiction; weight no change from last week.

Must try harder to be better organised and sleep better while travelling. Only three more weekends to go of the Sydney dash and jewellery course. Then it’s of to Canberra for a week, but I can take my bed (Siesta chair – see Hamacas Barcelona) and food with me.

Cold and wet today. Salmon and veg for dinner. Time for the Monday chores now so Corporal Crabbycams signing off.

BTW for those who don’t like the name, ‘crabby’ is related to my star sign and ‘cams’ are initials. But for those who prefer, CC will do nicely.

    Start weight: 182.4
    Week 1 175.8. – 8.6lbs

Prettty happy with that given I was only on plan for 4 of the 7 days. Having said that, before I started i had just come back from holiday so the half stone is water weight from thst. Mini goal to get below 12 abd a half stone.

  • What great results! You must be feeling very pleased and motivated and the food you are eating sounds absolutely gorgeous.

This is inspiring for me too as, like me, you have a moderate about of weight to lose and you’re eating lovely meals with a glass of wine and are not sticking strictly to the 800 cals which I find quite difficult and yet have had a great loss! Keep up the good work and keep us posted on your progress ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Hello! I’m starting today. I did bsd for 3 weeks about 2 months ago and lost about 9lbs then social things happened and I went off the rails. Have gained back about 6lbs :(. So restarting today and aiming to stick to it for 3 weeks, then have a 1 week holiday where I plan to low carb, then back on 800 cals for another 3-4 weeks. And then see where I am. I am currently 149lbs, goal is 126.
Breakfast today will be Greek yoghurt and a few berries. Have made a vat of courgette and ginger soup which will be for dinner. Lunch will be a chicken salad from Pret A Manger or EAT, I’m taking my kids out so will need to find a salad from somewhere!

  • Hi Bissell nice to see you. My first labneh is still in the muslin I’m not quite sure if it’s ready after 21 hours so will leave a few more. Could you please share your dryish curry recipes. I love curry but am not a fan of cauliflower rice so tend not to it anymore. I’m just off to chop some olives and bash some nuts for my labneh for lunch!

  • You could be right Esnecca. Most people find it really odd not to have a carby carb as the main part of a meal. I think you just become used to it and when you have blood sugar problems you know that carbs really are the enemy so it just becomes second nature if you want to stay healthy.

Unfortunately just taking the pills doesn’t seem to work with diabetes and most people seem to require more and more medication over time as the disease progresses. Low carbing does seem to work though. I was asking about weight/low carbs and diabetes on another thread. There seem to be quite a few ‘returners’ who have lost weight but regained. I wondered how their blood sugar had been with the weight gain, but it does seem that it’s the carbs that have more of an effect on BS than weight. I think this is borne out by people who have gastric band surgery whose BS drops way before any sizeable weight loss.

Anyway, I know that for me, low carbing has helped me to reduce my medication by half and hopefully in a few weeks I’ll be medication free, after my next HbA1c. Then I will have no choice but to regulate my BS by diet.

  • Really inspiring posts, I hope you don’t mind me dropping by. I so agree about the joys of the challenge of making tasty food from the ingredients we have, Esnecca and thanks for taking the time to post the recipes. I often have tzatziki for breakfast and I made some labneh the other day for the first time and it was delicious.

When I first embarked on the low carb trail I thought every meal would be ‘too wet’ without carbs. Especially being married to a Sri Lankan for 20 odd years (very odd, most of them) a curry without rice would have been bonkers. But so long as I include one dry ish curry, green beans or roasted cauli say, all is fine. And I can look at bread or cakes with a kind of indifferent detachment now, or even a slight queasiness, which is great.

Thanks for all the positivity and fresh ideas everyone!

Shift working can be a nightmare can’t it? When you get in, tired and hungry and open the fridge and eat whatever is there! I find it helpful to have some boiled eggs, cheese, salad stuff, carrots I’ve already prepared, tins of chilli sardines, ham and extra portions of bolognaise type mince in the freezer. Then there is always something I can just grab and eat. Although not all of the above at the same time, obviously!

Best of luck and I hope your brother recovers well. Enjoy the dog walk too!

  • Hi Sholdowa!
I’m another person who spent years and years controlling my weight with being “sporty” (luckily no diabetes) but ultimately I discovered that you cannot exercise enough to control your weight and when I found low carb/BSD, it finally just “clicked”. Now on over a year of maintenance and it has mostly become second nature.
My experience was interesting and you might find it useful — I found that I lost weight MUCH more quickly when I was NOT working out so much/so hard. And because I didn’t have as much energy for the first weeks of the BSD, that actually was better.
Gentle aerobics 4-5x per week was my best outcome — so I sort of put aside the big 2-3 hour workouts and benefitted all the same.
I am not sure what was going on physiologically speaking but I think maybe when you are on low calorie, and working out hard, your body just hangs on to every little bit of fat.
After I reached goal, I had more interest in working out hard and I have upped my sports. BUT I have to say that my experience showed me that gentle exercise is quite effective and I did not lose muscle or fitness level, so I do more gentle workouts than before.
Somehow, through six months of BSD (I did it so badly but got back on it every time) my body has changed so much — I can eat more and I have lots of energy — I just have to stay away from carbs and I can eat to the point where I feel full.
Of course, like you, I still love a cold draft beer — but now it is a reward after hiking! And tastes all the better for it! It took me much longer than 8 weeks to get to this point — more like 6 months to get to goal, then a year on maintenance and I’m still learning how MY body works best.
Figure out for yourself what is your sweet spot — I think we are all very different — play around with carbs/calories/etc — follow what FEELS right and makes you feel good. Don’t try to fit a program onto your personal self — this is as much a personal journey as it is a “diet” (new way of living).

Hi Capt. Lynne and all the motivated BSD forum posters ๐Ÿ˜Š.. I’ve stayed away long enough. I lost 8 kgs last April/May (2016) and kept it off for months. Even through our trip of a lifetime through Europe in September. Disaster struck for my motivation when I had a fall early November and fractured my hand. Then 10 days later shingles came out around my abdomen accompanied by excruciating nerve pain in my back. This pain continued until about March this year. In those few months I had to take very strong meds and ended up in hospital in CCU with suspected heart attack and high blood pressure! I have a terrible family history with heart disease so I had extensive tests and luckily for me, angiogram only showed a very mild thickening of the arteries but no blockages. A brother is undergoing open heart surgery this morning after a heart attack last week and he is the 3rd sibling to join the dreaded “zipper club” so I was understandably worried when I was unwell. (Both parents died of heart disease in their 50’s too) I managed to put on all the weight I lost last year. And it has taken all the energy I had to get back into work full on, but now it’s time for action again. I didn’t think I had the courage to come back to this forum, but after slowly getting started, I have so far lost 1.8 kgs and my head is in the right place again. I am now on meds for blood pressure and to lower cholesterol but I’m getting my head around that too. About to go for a walk with the dog on a beautiful winter morning here in Brisbane where the min temp was 7 but the max will be 26(c) … I hope you are going well Capt. Lynne. I love your humour and I hope we can keep each other going on this very supportive forum. If anyone has some good tips for easy to prepare meals I’d love to hear. I always find it a bit of a struggle with working shift work.
    Talk soon everyone … I’m back!! ๐Ÿ˜Š

Just read your post Lee , & felt your despondency at the thought of 1500 being the magic number that will keep you where you’ve worked so hard to get to , on one hand you know 1500 can be a whole lot of food , on the other you’re thinking Its not that much !
I’ve tried various diets over the years and the one thing I’ve always looked forward to with any of them was THE END , where I could just get back to ‘ normal eating and drinking ‘ , back to the real world where I could eat and drink whatever , whenever , and of course slowly & surely , back came the weight , plus a little more .
With this I believe there is NO END , there is only a beginning , the beginning of a new way of life where we are not being carb driven on the booze bus.
Your beginning here is fantastic , you plan to stay off the bus and you’ve list over a stone ! Fantastic ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

  • Hope you don’t mind me joining in. Age 57, started 10/7 at 102.6 and blood sugar 12.2. This morning ( 3 weeks on ) was 95.9 and 6.0. Big landmark, as I’m now officially only overweight for the first time in a decade!.

I’ve spent the last 3 years or so trying to use sport to control my diabetes, but basic training with the goal of completing 2 half marathons a year had kept my weight constant at around the 102kg mark over that time, down from 118 and sugars around the 10-11 mark. Not good enough. Doctor wife of my old training partner put me on to this diet, and it has restarted the weight loss, and by the look of it an improvement in my blood sugar level. However, the downside has been a massive drop in the amount of exercise I can take. People had been suggesting that it would come right, but 3 weeks in I really am doubting it’s going to happen.

I have found the recipes in the accompanying book to be a revelation – simple to create and very tasty. I really do miss bread and beer though!

However, if this diet will reset my body in 8 weeks, I’ll put up with it for another 5 weeks!

PS. One other thing. My distance eyesight seems to have improved. Could this be so?

    Hello
I’m still around & back from a long weekend at my husbands Sheffield University centenary do & also staying with his cousin meeting other family. I have gained a pound with all the wine I drank but trying to get back on track because July has been hopeless with losing much weight. I have been reading The Pioppi Diet that is written by an eminent British cardiologist & gives up to date research supporting a low carb/sugar way of eating as well other very helpful recommendations & highly recommend it.
We are still following a combination of 5:2 & the blood sugar diet & taking kefir to help our good gut bacteria. I still need to lose two more stone but I suppose am concentrating on healthy eating & recent blood tests show I am very well. My husband has now maintained his weight loss since last November sins losing his excess weight with the BSD! I just keep plodding on still trying to get down to my goal weigh!
Let’s all keep going & posting when we can?

Hi all, I’m now on day 10 and it’s going ok. Sorry to ask this, but has anyone had issues with the ‘runs’?! I can only guess it’s down to a change in diet (much more veg) and drinking more water??

    Hi,

Just wondering how often people measure their blood sugar levels when on the bsd?

I’m thinking of purchasing a monitor but it looks like it would be quite expensive if people measure often.

Also does anyone know if any of the UK pharmacies will measure blood sugar as part of their diabetes awareness programs?

    Thanks in advance

was hoping that would be the case, I know on the 5-2 diet it was OK to quoff it as long as the calories were counted, so thats OK

    thanks sunshine :O)

I’ve been 100% on plan today. Very proud of myself. Trying to be realistic about what happened at the weekend but very scared to get on the scales. I was only off plan for 28 hours for goodness sake!

It’s felt very easy to get back on track. I was expecting it to be like the first week again.
