Hello all. New here but started the bsd about a month ago.
I am diagnosed type 2 diabetic and overweight. I have lost nearly 10kgs since starting.

But__ a friend has recently being suffering from gall stones and a common cause is rapid weight loss. And apparently this can be even more common on very low calorie diets such as the bsd.
I am very happy on this and plan to do it for a while longer and wonder if anyone who has been doing this for a while has suffered from this?

Any thoughts or suggestions? Many thanks.

Hi again from another thread. I have never heard of gall stones being caused by weight loss. In fact, quite the opposite, losing weight and cutting carbs helps the liver function better so avoiding gall stones. If you have already got them (for your friend) this diet will help calm them down.

Weight loss can cause gall bladder complications. Usually if fat is cut from the diet. Discuss with your doctor. There are various theories about mal functioning gall bladder and cutting back adding to that.

Hello, I’m totally unqualified to comment but wanted to let you know that I am someone who has gallstones and hasn’t experienced any issues; but clearly everyone is different!

The BSD book warns about gallstones as a side effect so I was a little nervous prior to starting, all the more so because I hadn’t had an episode in the previous 12 months and really didn’t want to trigger one. I followed 8 weeks at a little over 800 calories per day and lost a bit more than 10% of my starting mass. Save for a very mild rumble in the first couple of weeks I have had no recurrence of gall bladder pain. I haven’t had an ultrasound since I started the diet but I am hopeful that reducing fat around the midriff can only be a good thing for keeping my gallbladder under control – I didn’t really fancy having it removed.

If you don’t currently have gallstones all I would say is if you have any pain or unusual sensations roughly below your right rib cage you should check in with your medic, and as others have said if in doubt discuss with them.

    Good luck with it!

The BSD book says (on page 97) that one person in the rapid weight loss group developed cholesystitis which MAY have been due to the diet. To develop cholesystitis the person must have already had one of several conditions such as gall stones and maybe took the eat fats to the wrong level. Gall stones are generally believed to be caused by high cholesterol and the liver having to produce more bile than is good for us to counteract the fat. I was a nurse by profession and we always told people with gall bladder problems to lose weight. Where I lack the knowledge is there was no talk about rapid weight loss then so maybe that makes the difference but never mentioned in my nursing days.

Hello and thanks for the answers. My friend ad I are trying to help each other to lose weight. She had a problem with this some years ago and it flared up again. She was in a great deal of pain and I really didnt want to join her in that!!
Thanks for the advice. I have never suffered from this but am having a bad year at the moment and feel like I have something new each week!!
I will carry on with this but try not to over do the oils. Who knew losing weight could be so painful!

Don’t underdo the oils if u already have gallstones or gall bladder problems. My specialist in this is adamant that if u cut oils to low or nothing your gallbladder will get worse. I know this as I ended up with a gangrenous gallbladder and emergency surgery when I lost a lot of weight on a fat free low cal diet.

Jenni, that is a good reminder. I think the low fat revolution has a lot to answer for as it was the synthetic fat replacement that caused a lot of problems. Just dont mistake all fats for good fats.
