Thanks Allie, it wasn’t a bad one but one helluva shock – even my GP was shocked as I wasn’t on the radar.
But one of my aims is to show my neighbour who’s a stroke/ heart ICU specialist just what a low carb diet can achieve. The more medics who can see living evidence of the transformation effected by this way of eating the more they are going to question the pedagogy of the profession. Even if l make him think just a little bit it’s a chink in the door, or even evidence of what he knows anecdotally.
Congratulations on your bloods, it must be so life-affirming for your doctor to recognise that you have taken charge of your own health.
Maggie

Hi Hedwig and you’re absolutely in the right place! I think tidying away leftovers by eating them is a habit we pick up when the kids are small and never quite get over it.
Just a warning about fruit – some of the most delicious are really high in carbs and really the only safe ones are berries and then sparingly. Sad isn’t it?
You’ll make it a lot easier for yourself if you knock those refined carbs on the head; the real benefits come after you’ve detoxed from carbs, that’s when this was of eating becomes a way of life rather than just another diet.
Good luck, you’re in the right place for heaps of positive support.

Hi everyone! This thread continues to be a great resource for links to explore. Thank you all!
How are you today, Maggie? Being an info junkie is a positive thing! This is one of my favorite quotes from the
Chinese philosopher, Lao Tzu:“The wise man is one who, knows, what he does not know”
In today’s vernacular, I think it applies to all of us who find it necessary to “turn over every rock” to discover what
knowledge might be hiding there 🙂 I’m SO VERY sorry that you’ve had to recover from a stroke. It has to be very
empowering to see your b.p. at a healthy 120/80! I started out at 160/90 with extremely high chloresterol, and
this way of life had it 120-125/70-80, and all of bloodwork is within the “optimal range”. Like you, I’m very commited
to keeping it that way!Allie

Hi there. I just joined, and figured a weekly thread might be a good place to start. I’m 5′ 2″, and around 58 kg/128 lbs. I’d like to lose somewhere between 5-10 kgs, but mostly want to improve the way I eat. I started a terrible habit of grabbing whatever food whenever when the kids were very small, and haven’t kicked it since. Also, I’m vegetarian but am terrible with fruit and vegetable intake. Bread and butter are my nemesis :). My main goals are:
– Up fruit and veg intake, and reduce other carbs (bread, pasta, etc.)
– Introduce a longer period of fasting daily (16/8, maybe)I’d like to kick start myself into a healthier lifestyle and could use some accountability. Should I be here, or on a different board/thread?

I’ve come across Huel previously because my daughter bought some before she went low carb. It doesn’t really fit with the BSD because it’s high carb and high protein. Are you doing body building perhaps?
I’m horribly aware that I’m puncturing your balloon, and do apologise, I want you to feel all psyched up and ready to take the bull by the horns, but think Huel might be a bit of an issue. Hopefully someone else will be along with a more constructive viewpoint.
But still, a warm welcome and hope you get to grips with your weight loss !

It’s all a chain of events.
Refined carbs are poisoning our bodies and causing leaky gut. Cholesterol is raised because LDL is needed to do its job repairing the damage; the blood vessels narrow because of the inflammation so blood pressure increases. Both high blood pressure and high cholesterol are symptoms of something being awry in our bodies. Removing refined carbs goes a long way to solving the problem, tho we still have cortisol, which is where mindfulness, exercise and breathing exercises come in.
I don’t know what my cholesterol is but my waking bp is below 120/80 which it has never been near with meds.
I’ve become a real low carb info junkie! -
S-g please read the Pioppi Diet and take a look at Robert Lustig’s work. It gives cholesterol a whole new complexion. High cholesterol per sey isn’t the devil we have been lead to believe. A bit like low fat food is good !!!

I’ve been doing the diet for 8 hours. So far so good 🙂
My GP advised me to use this diet to lose the 4 stone of weight I’ve out on in the past year. I’m starting off doing it with Huel. Are there any other Huelers here?
Also using TRE and yoga to support the emotional side of things and am hoping this forum will be a useful tool to. I’m a big sugar addict and have to get back off it again. Interested to hear how other people are getting on and about the health benefits it brings. -
My input on the statin subject comes from my doctor. I have been on very high dose for many years and nothing brought my numbers down – always around 7 or 8. Then I started getting screaming in the middle of the night cramps in my legs. Then had a few episodes of cramps in the arms. I told my doctor and he took me off the statins immediately. When I said, surely it is just a bit of cramp and I could put up with it, he said, and here is the biggy – your heart is a muscle and what would happen if that went into cramps – bang, you’re dead. I never realised that but within 6 months my cholesterol was up to 8 or 9 and he put me back on them but at a much lower dose. The thing that really brought my numbers down was this diet and the good oils and fats. He used to test me every 12 months but now every 3 months as he doesn’t quite believe my results. If they continue I will be asking him to stop the statins but for now he wont as I have had 3 risk factors: diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure, yet I have got all three under good control with the diet and he still wont budge.

Thanks. I’m not sure soy sauce would be saucy enough for him, but I can try. He was quite sceptical of the BSD until he saw that I wasn’t hungry, felt better, and that most of his favourite foods are allowed. He wasn’t good at knowing whether food would have carbs in without reading the labels. Doing that made him realise how much sugar and ‘junk’ there is in most preprepared food and he was quite shocked.
I usually use olive oil for my stir fries, but I’m sure coconut would be fine. I keep forgetting to buy that!
My ‘secret’ to a stir fry is the slice the vegetables evenly (I don’t mean that the onions must be the same size as the peppers, but all the pepper pieces must be the same, all the mushroom pieces the same etc.) First I gently cook the flavouring things (ginger, chilli, garlic etc) and set them aside. If using prawns, or anything that is spoiled by overcooking, it might be best to cook that first and set aside too. Then add more oil and get the pan/wok really hot – as hot as your cooker allows. Add each different ingredient separately, starting with whatever needs the longest cooking time – usually the meat if you’re using that. Don’t add the next until the previous item seems to be cooked. Beansprouts go in almost at the end, followed by the cooked flavourings and fresh coriander or other herbs and any sauce you might use. Have the plates ready and eat immediately.
You can use just about any veg you can think of. Perhaps not beetroot as it would stain everything else, but otherwise I can think of anything which wouldn’t work.
I have a special stirrer thingy (I’m sure there’s a special name for it) but a fish slice would do the job. You sort of turn it over, as though folding cake mix, rather than stirring.
-
S-G – that’s scary on a whole other level, speaking in a foreign language and answering questions! 🙂 Phew, I bet you felt good afterwards though? Katy seemed to think that those on board with this way, would promote it regardless of their guidelines but there will always be some that follow the guidelines by the letter or are just not convinced and think their way is the right way. Oh, that was the other thing… 160 amputations a week from diabetes! You never hear that on the news anywhere.

on 5 Jun 2018 at 14:35 in Welcome to the BSDGood morning, everyone (I’m in Florida, USA),
I’ve learned so much from being a lurker for the last few weeks. You’re all so kind, compassionate and generous with both your time and your knowledge and I’m feeling ready to jump into the heap of love, sunshine, and positivity you’re all generating and hopefully give tons back, too!
I was diagnosed T2D in October 2016 at age 51. At the time I weighed 172 pounds (i’m 5’8″). Needless to say it threw me for a loop. In just one year, my fasting bs went from 99 to 185 and my HbA1C was 7.8, I was put on Metformin and immediately cut all carbs and became kind of obsessive because of all the horror stories I’d read about the long term effects of uncontrolled blood sugar. Within three months, I’d lost 25 pounds and my bs was in the 80’s. Then the Metformin started giving me 5-10 ‘Met Moments’ a day to the point where I couldn’t leave the house or, if I did, I had to bring a change of clothes. It was a nightmare. My doc then tried me on a slew of other meds, all which gave me the same intestinal distress after about 3-4 months. I also started getting lax about restricting my carbs and before I knew it I was eating the same way I did before the diagnosis (chips, cookies, Dairy Queen blizzards, milk shakes). I’m a terrible carb junkie! My whole existence could rely on junk food! And, unfortunately, I never got that bloated, icky, headachy feeling from eating all that junk. The more I ate, the more I wanted…..it truly is such an addiction! I had convinced myself after losing that first 25 pounds so easily that I could then move into eating carbs at a moderate level but now I clearly see I’m not able to do that in any way, shape or form!
So then I was reading an article about the Newcastle study and did some more research on that. I’m not on any diabetes meds, my weight was up to 178, and my blood sugar readings were hovering around 200 way too often and never got below the 120’s.
I started doing Newcastle (hadn’t found this BSD yet) with shakes. The first few weeks were absolute hell. Constant, ferocious hunger, grumpy, grumpy, grumpy. weak, weak, weak! But I persisted, waiting for that glorious moment I knew was to come when I wouldn’t feel hungry and my energy would be back. It took two whole weeks and then, overnight, the hunger was gone and the energy was back. It was amazing!
Since May 15th (Day 1, for me), I’ve been sticking to 800 calories, <20 grams of carbs, about 50 grams of protein, and 58 grams of fat (I use and adore MFP). It’s been three weeks and I’ve lost 10 pounds. More would have been blissful but my mindset is completely different and I know I’m in it for the long haul simply to control my T2D (and my vision, my heart, my limbs, etc…).
Since finding the BSD and these forums and all of you amazing like-minded souls, I’ve been swapping out some shakes and eating more real food as per the BSD 800 plan. And trying to move more, too! Thinking about incorporating some longer fasts (24-36 hours). Fasting blood sugars back into the 80’s so success in the most important way 🙂
That’s my story….I’m anxious to start a weekly and monthly challenges and to be an active participant in this warm and wonderful world! Thanks again to all of you!

Maggie you made me smile with your ‘12 year old ‘ doctor I think we’ve all been there!!
Your story echoes so many others. I personally know of two people prescribed statins who both became really ill. The first suffered general fatigue and aches and pains. The second was so ‘ill’ she went from a really healthy looking person to someone who almost looked at ‘deaths door’ in a matter of two months. Both became well again when they stopped the statins!
My experience with statins was as follows….. overall cholesterol 5.2, the same as it had been my entire adult life, goal posts moved so now it needs to be closer to 4 point something. Ah! says the doctor you need statins! Oh! Say I. This is MY normal so the goal posts may have been move but I’m still ‘ normal’! Then came all the fiddling around with computer programs desperately trying to get me in the ‘at risk’ group. But, try as she might, my risk factors keep falling short of the ‘magic’ number, I continued to resist.
Then, only a matter of months ago, I heard, for the first time , the word ‘ratio’. My ratio of HDL to LDL, or vica versa, was 2.1. Anything below 3 is good. My diabetes nurse was over the moon!
Robert Lustig seems to be saying much the same as Aseem Malhotra so this definitely calls for far more investigation and rereading of my book.
Thank you so much for your comprehensive reply.

I know just how scary that can be Kazz. A couple of years ago when I was taking French lessons I had to give a 10 minute talk about a hobby, holiday, interest – you know the sort of thing – to get us speaking in public in a foreign language. The only thing obsessing me at that time was the discovery of this diet. I printed off the NHS triangle (ladders of foods) which is carb laden and then I found one from the Australian Nutrition Foundation with fruits and veg on the bottom rung (eat most of and, although not fully BSD the carbs were on the next level. Not only did I do the talk totally in French there were so many questions I was on the stage for 50 minutes. Hopefully some of the people listening would have taken notice, several said they had relatives with diabetes and would be telling them. My husband has banned me from ‘preaching’ when we are out but some many people ask me why I am not eating the bread etc and I just have to tell them. Unfortunately, I was reading a diabetic leaflet in my doctor’s waiting room and the advice here is eat 5 portions of carbs daily. So my positive here is that my doctor approves of my diet and I hope he secretly suggests it to other patients with diabetes.
-
I remember looking for a miracle for my diabetes and crying with despair at the number of hoax cures and treatments I was bombarded with. I remember sitting through a 40 minute video about people living on a remote island and never having diabetes – at the end it said ‘now here is how much you are going to have to pay for the truth’???? Then somehow I heard about DrM and had my doubts but thought it was just the price of a book (£5.99) and I could risk that. No need to look any further, I have found my, not quite a miracle, but the next best thing. This is the only thing that has worked for me and it doesn’t cost a fortune but needs willpower and determination.

Well hello there! I didn’t think anyone would remember me on here – so thank you!!
Yes I’m starting BSD again. I am good friends with Yowzer and its her really that inspired me to return to BSD. She did incredibly well and, well, it must be nearly 2 years that’s she’s bean on this now. She still sticks with low carb and is SO good at sticking with it! She’s amazing!
As for me, I reached my lowest weight in many, many years and then did the crazy thing of putting it all back on – and some(!) So I was incredibly pleased to see 8 pounds disappear in just 2 weeks – that’s unheard of me!! So low carb and low cals it is from now on.
How are you doing? happyitsworking? Are you happy so far? This must be your first week, though, isn’t it?

Hi Kazzee and Cathy,
I seem to be at a similar stage to yourselves. My scales are not changing, however I am seeing changes to body shape. I have bought one of the scales that reads fat levels as well, I know they are not very accurate, but I hope that they are consistently inaccurate so I will be able to notice trends on fat / lean mass. -
I had a minor stroke a couple of years ago. The 12 year-old doctor caring for me prescribed statins and basically said take them or die; I was obviously reluctant to take them having read about side effects like muscle pains – which I now know has a name, statin myopathy https://www.bmj.com/content/337/bmj.a2286
So, the young man laughed and said I suppose you’ve been reading the Daily Mail; bet he doesn’t speak to his mother like that. Long story short, I took them religiously for months and accepted the stroke had massive effects and thought what I was feeling was the development of dementia. I felt dreadful, I was getting confused by Bubble Witch Saga even.
Anyway, I forgot to reorder my prescription and within days it was like a fog was lifting, I felt like a different person and it continued to improve. I did some research and found that HDL which I had a very high level of, was critical to brain function; ffs, why give medication that messes with your brain?
So, explained to GP what had happened and he responded he hadn’t come across brain fog before but he’d had plenty of adverse events; lots of muscular pain and one patient who couldn’t walk after a week of statins. I said I’d rather be dead than continue feeling like that, he agreed and he agreed that I stop.
What puzzled me was that there appeared to be very little reporting of this particular reaction to statins, and then it became obvious; I had put it down to the damage suffered by the stroke and simply hadn’t realised what was happening. How would you when your ability to think was being closed down? If I’d kept taking them I’d probably be diagnosed with dementia by now.
And my GP wasn’t surprised! I’m very grateful that he was straight with me, but I think I had to question the prescription for him to be honest.
Robert Lustig in the Kopriva Science Seminar Series in March of this year explains that the figures that really matter are the ratio between Triglycerides and HDL. My Triglycerides are rock bottom and HDL sky high – I was struck by this when my GP read my results because he remarked on them. My ratio is excellent and I should never have been prescribed statins, it was at best lazy and at worst culpable.
Verano, you’re obviously going armed with a ton of questions for this poor unprepared GP, but the killer is, is there a single study that shows that a cardiovascular event has been prevented by statins? And the answer is no.
Go girl!! -
Hi,
Since I started researching keto diets and insulin resistance I have started to have adverts appear about programs for low carb diets and supplements to take to guarantee weight loss. – Its just a result of cookies on websites and data gathering by marketing companies looking for what they could sell you. My advice would be to ignore them. –
If you follow this WoE you are naturally working to bring your blood sugar under control. There are plenty of people on this forum who have lots of experience in bringing their blood sugar under control this way. All you need is to take a good multivitamin / mineral and follow the program. – In my opinion you are better off spending the money on either better food choices, or saving up for none food rewards as you hit your targets. -
Wishing you all good effort this week (I like that!)
I am going to just see what happens this week. I’ve never done this so no idea how my body will respond.
I’ve got some meal replacement shakes for these first two weeks, just for me psychologically I think it will help get into the rountine of not grabbing toast first thing or a sandwich at lunch. Hoping that once I see results and I’m a bit weened off bread, I’ll be more motivated to have low carb breakfast and lunch 👍
My partner is amazing at making low carb tasty dinners. It’s just that by that point I’ve usually eaten my body weight in carbs 😂
-
Squidge, funnily enough I was asking someone about stir frying this morning as I’ve never mastered the art. You can buy a gluten free soy sauce but I’m not sure how carby it is. Also the right oil is important. Coconut oil? I knew someone who used to dry fry her veggies with just a couple of table spoons of water, then crumble over an stock cube and keep stirring until it dissolved. But again, I’d have to look up the macros. I look forward to hearing from others on this! 🙂 Well done on the gradual conversion! 🙂

It was scary – I was red in the face and not sure I came across very articulately! You know, a colleague of mine was saying that her parents and all her aunties and uncles all have T2. She’s from Bangladesh and whilst she’s generally aware and careful about the food she eats, she cannot for the life of her get her older family members to listen, to get them to ditch the high carb rice, chapatis, breads etc. She’s quite frightened for them. What a nightmare!
-
Finally got on the scales this morning and I weighed in at 12 st 5lbs – so over a stone heavier than just before Christmas. My goal over the next 8 weeks is to lose 1 stone and get my insulin injections down to pre-Christmas level of 22 / 24 units. I chose 1 stone because that is how much I lost when I first did this in June 2016 so know I tend to lose slower than most due to the insulin injections. I have set myself a goal for the first week to lose between 3 and 5 lbs.
As an old hand at this diet I certainly dont think I know everything but having been around a while, I am always happy to give advice, particularly to fellow diabetics. Have a good first week everyone and keep on keeping on…
-
Joining this group to give myself short term goals and objectives. I have weighed in this morning and know that I would like to lose between 3 and 5 lbs this week. Even though I have done this 100% before I am feeling very tense about going the whole way but know I will be seeing results in a couple of days and that will spur me on. The big thing for me is getting my insulin down to what it was before Christmas at 22 units and I have crept up to 36 over an extended holiday period. So there it is, lose 3-5lbs and insulin down to 30 units by next Tuesday.

I’m going to try sliding my glasses down my nose, so I have to hold my head up to see where I’m going!
Do you mind if I brag for a moment? I’ve just tried on the dress I was wearing when I met my husband. I can get it on! It’s a little snug, but not in an ‘about to burst open’ way. It’s a classic shift dress with jacket, so I’ll be able to wear it again in a few inches time!

Logically, as our core muscles are the ones we use for upright posture., then standing and sitting straight will strengthen them. I have realised in the last year or so how much my posture has ‘sunk’ so I am making a conscious effort to stand, sit and walk upright. Perhaps we should walk around the room with books on our heads a la finishing school 😂

Hi JGwen – yes me too. I find it keeps me the right side of portion control (a big 10-4 to the tendency to be very bad, Verano) and also helps to recalibrate my recognition of hunger as opposed to mindless eating.
Alliecat, i wanted to get ballpark figs when I began this WOE so looked up a few things on carbs. This is the one i cited https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/how-many-carbs-per-day-to-lose-weight#section1
Although i realise now that it defines 50+g of carbs as a ‘moderate ‘carb diet. I think it was just the article’s assertion that one could still lose weight within that range of carbs that stuck with me. It helped when i OD’ d on nuts a couple of times! -
Just found this – http://www.charminginlove.com/blog1/2016/3/24/4e17f7ocf4o5fy7j7es9duncsa44y5
It suggests that sitting up straight can actually improve our abdoms and burn extra calories! Has to be worth a try.

Mindymoo84 – a really good idea to write it down.
My HB1aC in 2012 was 125. Weight around 12st 6lbs. My GP tried to test my BS in the surgery but it was so high his meter just said high as I was off the scale. I think the hospital got a reading of 26.
I was Immediately put on multiple insulin injections throughout the day – so was injecting every time I ate. I think that is probably a quite severe T2D and was on insulin for 4 1/2 years. Even with all that insulin my fasting BS was around 6 and my HB1aC around 52 when I started the BSD. On the BSD – with no insulin it is 40. I do have to keep my carb to around 20g as am still quite insulin resistant, but am hopeful that this will improve further.
So I do think the BSD really works and I am sure that you will have no problems with getting your blood sugars down to lower levels – especially with all the support from this superb forum.

I’m short in the body too (actually I’m short everywhere except my hair!) and I’m a sloucher. I can do something about one of those issues.
Shoulders back, chest out, stomaches in, girls!

I like a nice stir fry and it can be a really healthy meal. I used to add noodles and a sachet of sauce (Blue Dragon type). Ditching the noodles has been no problem at all – but the sauce is more tricky. I’m happy without as I add ginger, garlic, chillies and the like to give plenty of flavour but my husband isn’t. He likes sauce or gravy on everything. I could just add bought sauce to his (I have a few times) but they’re mostly sugar and chemicals and I’m gradually converting him to our way of thinking and eating.
Any suggestions for a BSD friendly sauce? (Nothing involving fish sauce or sesame.)

Congratulations to all losers (I love writing that – it seems so contradictory!). I’m back on track and have lost 3lbs this week. It is definitely helpful readying everyone’s supportive comments and learning we all have wobbly moments, and then get back on the horse! We are definitely winners really!

Hi Trundlebug,
It was one of the surprises to me how eating carbs was keeping me on a treadmill of eating, and it felt strange to discover the difference between hunger and feeling like eating. Eating 16:8 has been a great tool for me for both having a varied diet and coping with social events / meeting up with friends in an evening.
