Hello! I’ve been lurking here for a couple of weeks now . I’m now on W2D2 of the Fast800, I’ve lost 6 lbs so far 🙂
To the best of my knowledge, I’m not diabetic, and don’t have issues with blood pressure or cholesterol. But I am about 3 stone overweight, so those issues are hanging around in the shadows. My father was T2 diabetic and on insulin, and he made very little effort to manage his condition himself (from what I could see – he might have thought he was trying REALLY hard). He died in January from heart issues (related to the diabetes, I think), but I’d seen his feet a week or so before that and it was only a matter of time before he’d have lost one or both. Honestly, I’m glad for him he went when he did. He also had macular degeneration and was generally pretty unwell. I don’t want to end my days like that! Equally, I don’t want to put the pressure on my OH that my mother has been under for the last few years.
It was actually my OH who heard an interview on the radio with Dr Michael Mosely about the BSD, he was so impressed he ordered the book straight away, and took it along on holiday with us (all inclusive, all you can eat …). I read the book in an afternoon, and was convinced!
So anyway, I’m one week in – a couple of days in the first week were pretty desperate, but overall I haven’t suffered too badly. I have gone through a bit of a grieving process over my friends, chocolate and biscuits, which used to keep me company during my days (as crazy as that sounds – but I’m self-employed and work from home, so don’t have a lot of access to real people during the working day!), but hopefully I’m over that now too. In fact, today I didn’t even have breakfast until 11 am (dinner was 7.30 pm last night) and I was only just starting to get rumbly then 😮 Shocking – I used to be a “can’t do anything before my brekkie or I’ll faint” sort of a girl!
I’ve also put myself on a “no non-essential spend” 8 weeks too – I don’t want to swap my sugar and carb addiction for an online shopping habit … I’m hoping I will save some money to replace my wardrobe when the time comes 😉
Sorry for the long post! I’m self-employed and work at home, so any chance for human interaction is grabbed with both hands 😀

Hi all,
I haven’t posted anything since Monday and wow what has happened, I feel out of the loop already, I’m sure I will catch up in a bit, was at daughters yesterday, didn’t get back until 10 pm, she made a chicken curry with a jar! And a lamb curry from scratch, I had to have the chicken as there were too many wanting the lamb ( and I’m not too keen on re-heated lamb ) I also had a square of chocolate on the way home, I was so hungry, I could’ve eaten every cake in the shop window, ( had there been one on the m5!) Today I went to the doctors for my weigh in and I had lost 20 lb he wants to wait a while before doing blood tests etc, however he was pleased and is happy that I carry on, he also reassured me that if I continue how I am going I will not put the weight back on as long as it’s everything in moderation after that and eat a la Mediterranean I will be on the right tracks, he really is a good doctor I am very lucky, he is the type of guy who listens, thinks then replies, then at the end of the consultation asks, is there anything else I can help you with, so I hope he is my doctor until he sees me out, there aren’t many like him around!
All the rest of the posts I will read now, however I won’t respond to any as I won’t have time or memory to do so but I still like to read everything even if I don’t respond! So no offence to anyone. I do feel a bit stressed at the moment having loads to do and two lots of visitors coming next week, while I’m still on my last of the eight weeks, and looking after three of our granddaughters on Friday, ( we have 11 grandchildren plus two step grandchildren) so we are kept busy, even though they live all around the country, Scotland, 4, Sheffield 2, Bristol 2plus2 and ‘here’ 3 we do a lot for the three that live 10 mins away too!
One thing I do remember reading on the forum was something about the fish pie, the topping being celeriac! I had it and thought it was awful, we eat a lot of fish, however I will do the fish pies I do with cauliflower mash in future, I can cope with that.
Good luck everyone, and here’s hoping I catch up with you all soon, cheers -
Bill that is so wonderful! Don’t underestimate how much of a help and inspiration you are on these forums, either. Please, please keep posting!

Bill, congratulations on being so ordinary yet achieving such extraordinary things! Way to go!

Thanks Hashimoto 😊

Hi Bill
That is an amazing success! Fantastic!
So now lots of her patients will get the info, because of you. Well done!

on 30 Mar 2016 at 15:48 in Welcome to the BSDDefinitely higher! If I’m understanding it right, 2% means only 2% fat. So where is the other 98%? We want 100% please! Maybe I’m missing something though?
-
Hashimoto
Well thank goodness he did!

Hi Hashimoto
Well if you get a good committee he can be stopped even if it means chucking him off. What a horrible person!
My experience – I have 2 allotments, one run by allotment holders and one by the parish council- the council is pretty awful and doesn’t know what it’s doing, whereas the committee of allotment holders is really good , keeps things in order really well. We have regular inspections and people are chased up about neglect, over running into others plots, Rubbish , border disputes etc. We re wrote our constitution recently – it was full of irrelevant things- so if you or your committee would like a copy of it to work from I could send it to you. It might sound quite draconian but we are swayed by arguments at times!
The councils are just not hands on enough , often, whereas allotment committees are. Obviously you can get difficult committee members too which can be a pain.
Good luck with it

Cherrianne
Google Mary Shomon/thyroid. She’s a bit out of date with her dietary advice (wouldn’t surprise me if she is currently research low carb high fat though!) but she also gives info about what tests we should be asking for. If you really want to annoy your doctor you can ask for the specific test by its name!
-
Penny your holiday sounded brilliant!
Welcome to the veterans club – like Bill I thought you already were – for the same reason!! 🙂 -
TWills63, amazing result! You must be so pleased and you are at the point where the diet becomes so much easier! 🙂
-
Hi Inka, I mentioned I weigh every day but I also keep an excel spreadsheet of my data to take to medical appointments with me. It really helps. Medical staff like properly kept records – they’re scientists after all! 🙂
-
Bill absolutely bloody brilliant. Sorry for swearing, I just couldn’t help it!!
I’ve just come in from lunch with a friend. She was impressed with my weight loss and better health. She is buying 2 copies of the book, one for herself, one for her parents. I’ve facebooked the petition to her account. The word is getting out there!
Are you going to be a patient advisor Bill? I know you are very busy but what a chance to change lives!!!!
In fact, Bill, (and cherrianne) I might just let that comment go – you know the one – I have only just seen it. That’s only because I am happy about your results or I would send you running round the supermarket in a mankini! 😉
-
Congratulations on getting to this point and also for having had the forethought to prepare so well for the meeting – it is rare to get someone to openly admit they have been wrong!

Question about Full Fat though.is it the 2% or should I be looking for higher?
Thanks!

So, I turned up at the docs full of confidence and ready to go in with all guns blazing.
Then I found out I was seeing a doctor who I wasn’t keen on as in the past she hasn’t seemed to be very interested in anything.
Walked in and made my opening play by saying “before I start talking and you pick up the phone to the funny farm, could you glance at these, they explain what I’ve been doing. I gave her the notes printed off from this site.
She had a look and I could see her whole demeanour change, so I waded in with the whole 9 yards.
Told her about the weight loss, sugar readings the better sleep, the healthy feeling and the fact that I had achieved this while dropping most of my meds.
Her response staggered me, she said “with the story you just told me I would have no hesitation in having you as a patient advisor”
She knew herself that low carb was the way to go, but hadn’t heard of this diet. She now has the website address saved and will be ordering the book.
Next she went to my results. I’m still getting my head around this, she said I am no longer diabetic according to my HbA1c tests, I’m now in the pre diabetic range and my cholesterol is almost normal. Kidney function is excellent and I already knew my eye improvement.
She said that I was right on the verge of coming off medication completely but she would leave when to me as I had managed this so well up to now. Had a chuckle at what I had wrote on the form and said, “I cant’ blame you, you have taken this into your own hands and succeeded where we didn’t. Honestly. Then I hit her with the biggy, “if you look at the dates, I had those blood tests 4 weeks into the diet, I got a VERY old fashioned look.
We agreed that I would have my next tests in September and the surgery will continue to support me with the glucose test strips.
As you can imagine, I left sort of walking on air but with a new found respect for a GP that perhaps I had all wrong.
So to everybody who reads this post, I’m nothing special, just an ordinary bloke with a life threatening disease.
I have proved to myself beyond doubt that Michaels and Prof Taylor’s diet works, and if I can do it, we all can. -
Cherrianne, my hypothyroidism went undiagnosed for YEARS because the cheap test the NHS can use kept saying I was just low end of normal. I had ALL the symptoms. The surgery, to give them their due, did regularly retest – always the same result. Then I started going in mini comas, and my mother asked what the huge swelling on my neck was. A goitre! Hypothyroid goitre. Ask for a more definitive thyroid check. 🙂

Penny, this happened to my son – a young fit person. A young inexperienced physio said almost the same to him. Like you he knew better! 🙂

on 30 Mar 2016 at 14:52 in Fast 800Hi Penny, it’s in quite a rough area and apparently the previous occupants started then gave up. It looks like the bloke in the next door allotment keeps sabotaging people – so my son has been told by some of the old timers. My son put up a temporary fence because he is waiting for the rubbish dump to be moved and when he returned this bloke had pulled down his fence and fed huge hose pipes right over my son’s allotment. He is suspected of being the main dumping culprit and it’s not in his best interest that anyone is on that allotment. The council are handing over the management to the allotment holders – could get better, could get a lot worse!
The hedge is sorted and a the burnable rubbish has mostly been burned. The council said there was so much rubbish dumped on the land that they would only remove the non burnable and everything has to black bagged. How do you black bag a 3 seater sofa? Broken TV’s, etc etc 🙁 -

Yes indeed… but I think it won’t be too long now before everyone gets on the low carb wagon. Then for a while we can expect low sugar/carb products to be more freely available but horrendously expensive while they recoup losses and pay for the new marketing and manufacturing processes!

Heinz own WeightWatchers……… explains a lot…..

Its no wonder we are fighting such an uphill battle when weight loss companies are peddling products that are a quarter sugar!

on 30 Mar 2016 at 13:49 in Welcome to the BSDCherrianne – no suggestion of fatty liver from tests. 3-5 years ago, my liver enzymes were elevated at my annual physical. That happened to have been fewer than 24 hours after my birthday meal – at which I’d had 1-2 margaritas. Follow-up tests – and every annual test since then – were absolutely normal. I just appear to be abnormally sensitive to alcohol.
If I have to get to the bottom of my BMI normal range people will freak out. I’m not in the normal range yet, and at least one person has already expressed concern about my weight being borderline too low. Because of my build, people routinely put my weight at 20-30 lbs lower than it is.
My carb limit is 20 net in a 3 hour period, so I can already have 60 net/day – as long as I space them out well.
My liver is definitely is still doing the glycogen to glucose conversion to wake me up in the morning (and until it recognizes I’ve broken my overnight fast). As I understand it, that’s part of the purpose of a fasting period – the glycogen stores run out after 16-18 hours, so a fast at least that long depletes them. But there’s some signaling mechanism (beyond the first phase response telling it that food is on the way) that has to be malfunctioning since it just keeps dumping long after it gave me the energy I needed to get out of bed. But that’s beyond where I was able to get in terms of understanding, given my currently limited time for research.
I just noticed I posted this in the welcome section, rather than where I intended to post it (the 800 calorie section). Guess I’ll post a new one (as a progress thread) in the right place at the end of my first week.

Only told my husband & a friend when I started…since then I have slowly told more friends & a cousin. My parents are currently abroad & are due back mid April. I will suprise them with a slimmer me & try and get them onboard the ‘bsd train’ ( they r both type 2)
My Dr had done 5:2 but was not to receptive of the BSD & said my body would go into starvation mode so I would be better off doing the 5:2.
Can’t wait to see her reaction when I next go to see her. Hopefully she’ll start recommending BSD to other patients!!! -

Good afternoon Lynne, I am not surprised that Asda is loading it’s chicken with sugar as well, predictable. Haven’t got out today but plan is to check Sainsbury’s and Co-Op as these are the only 2 other stores we have in addition to M&S. I’m in town at the weekend & during my usual ram-raid of Waitrose, I’m going to take a look at their chicken & prawns. No Morrisons or Tesco anywhere near where Iive or visit.
Labelling, now that’s another nice little nut to crack….. Traffic lights, % ……. As most people have no clue as to what 5 by volume actually means it’s a real can of worms.
Showed a young friend of mine exactly how much sugar was in her Weight Watchers ‘safe’ cake…….DISGUSTING. She had no idea but 1 portion had just under 22g of sugar in it……. 24% of the nasty little thing was SUGAR!!!!

on 30 Mar 2016 at 13:13 in Welcome to the BSDHi Janet – The Grocery downstairs from work didn’t have any higher fat Cottage Cheese, so I’m going to have to make due until I can shop at the bigger store near home on the weekend. I’m looking forward to finding full fat Greek Yogurt too!
The plan is to phase out the shakes completely, I think that will be happening sooner, rather than later, lol.
Cheers!

Hi Justabloke
Sorry about late reply- dodgy Goan wifi. Back home now.
You sound like you’re doing so well.
Re the High intensity excercise. – I thought I’d cycle round the park and fast up the hill ( not ‘fast ‘ of course but with effort) I think that’s a way I could add it in. Sounds like a good boost.
Hope all still going well and BMI still falling.

Hi Lachlan,
What a relief to find out you haven’t been counting all the carbs! At least you have the answer now. We really do have to be diabetes detectives don’t we? We just have to keep on testing theories and trying new ones until we come up with the culprit responsible for the crime against blood sugars. 🙂 So glad you’re on the right track now. We are going to be hearing your great results soon I think.
Bill, I’m not going to know until tomorrow now! It’s 20 to midnight here and I’m going to sleep. All the best for your appointment 🙂 -
Off the top of my head, as they are a processed product (I don’t know what’s in them you understand), I would say best avoided if possible. If you think you might be needing something fast, have a go at making some savoury sesame crackers (they are easy and simple to make) to nibble on or try a cube of cheese to fill the gap.

Another ageism story. Years ago my father was in a lot of pain and needed a hip replacement. The GP would not refer him. I told my father to ask again, but then the GP said he wanted to see me. He kept me waiting, then sat writing without acknowledging my presence. When he finally spoke to me, he said it was my dad’s age! At that point I pointed out that my dad had two hips and only one was giving trouble! He got his hip replaced 😃
A different story – my mum was in hospital and I was meeting with her consultant surgeon. One of his areas of expertise was bariatric surgery (not what me mum was having) and every time he saw me, I could see him eyeing me up as a potential patient. I automatically pulled my coat round me in an attempt to reduce my size😳
-
I can fit into all my nice old clothes which I had gotten a size too big for! So my wardrobe options have expanded greatly. I’ve been wearing my nice black leather jacket loads, because the weather has been just right for it.
I’m buying a new bikini – except it’s proving slightly problematic because I think my bra size has changed and I’m trying to work out what I am now! Ordered a bunch online to try on.
I can cross my legs more comfortably now when sitting down.
My nightly reflux has disappeared since reducing carbs. -
Hi Hashimoto
I flagged this while on goa and just found it again.
Probably you ve cleared a lot it by now- I’d love to get my secateurs and loppers on that hedge!
Sounds like it’s going to be lovely eventually. But how was it allowed to get in such a mess! Maybe there’s not a big call for allotments there! Here in London you can’t even get on the list! I m on the committee for hackney allotments and we have to be strict ( tho it’s not easy) because the demand is so high. It’s really use it or lose it!
Anyway, by now the two of you will have bulging muscles at least!
Good luck with it.
Penny

on 30 Mar 2016 at 13:01 in Welcome to the BSDHi there,
Liking your goals, especially number 2.I assume the 2% cottage cheese is 2% fat is it? If so, you can go for full fat cheeses on this programme, they will help add to your feeling of fullness.
Well done for working out plan b, I think you will prefer it in the long run.
-
I told my husband from the start, and he was very supportive because he knows I’m not into fad diets (I’ve never been on one) and very into science and skepticism, so he trusts that I know what I’m talking about and that I get my info from trustworthy sources. He also watches Trust Me I’m a Doctor with me and all the other BBC health shows I love, so knows who Michael Mosley is.
Other reactions have been a little mixed. (Keep in mind I’m just eating med style, not doing 800 cal a day.) Some people are interested, others brush it off as a low carb fad.
I really want to get my parents in on it, because I think they’d really benefit from the 8 week diet. My mum was vaguely interested to begin with, but then said she just needed to exercise more. I’m hoping that when she sees photos of me (we live on opposite sides of the globe!) she’ll get interested again, or when we go visit next year I can make her some food and she can see how I eat and hopefully see how well it works and how easy it is. -
Dr M doesn’t specify how many carbs in the book but if you want you can check out a website called diet doctor which is also a low carb high fat plan very similar to this one.
-
Absolutely common. Caffeine tends to worsen it (in my experience). I find that taking a sinus pill (I use Advil Sinus) works for me.
Well, it at least takes the edge off of it.
Stick with it. This too shall pass.
Cheers,
Deb

Shame you don’t like yoghurt Chezza, not even Greek Yoghurt, it’s strained so has a different taste & consistency to other types.
I’d have a look at a variety of different mayos, I use a full fat Maille one from France (it is available in the UK). I hope you find one that floats your boat, enjoy the salad!
-
It’ll be that headache!
-
Anything up to 50g should get you into ketosis (fat burning) but some people prefer to keep it lower, around 20g or 30g.

on 30 Mar 2016 at 12:53 in Welcome to the BSDBeginning of Day three and I’ve had it with the shakes. The drinkable ones…
They just don’t fill me up! So what I’ve done today is replaced my AM shake with 2 eggs and 125ml of 2% Cottage Cheese. I flavoured the eggs with Herbs de Provence and a little Tabasco. I am lucky that a few months ago I purchased a Egg-Tastic Egg cooker for work. I used it for the first time today and it cooked 2 eggs in the microwave perfectly in under a minute (45 sec actually).
It was delicious and I’m hoping it will keep me full longer.
I also splurged and bought a new loose leaf herbal tea called “Mother’s Little Helper” – from the package…
“Need to relax? One sip of this blend is like a day at the spa. Herbal Infusion – Organic – Caffeine-free
Ingredients: Peppermint, Lemongrass, hibiscus, rosehips, chamomile, valerian root, and cornflowers.”It smells divine. Time to go brew a pot.
Make today a great day!
Three Goals:
1. Clean out “emergency” carbs from desk and give to another department.
2. Don’t ask for them back later.
3. Log all food, even if it’s zeros across the board.Cheers,
Deb

Agreed Penny. Unfortunately, I think many doctors do reach for the first stereotype to hand and have empathy fatigue these days.
-
I was lucky with my Dr, she gave me her blessing to try the diet. I have my 3 month check up with the diabetic nurse tomorrow. I don’t think I have reduced my blood sugars yet as I had a couple of months of out-of-control eating and weight gain before I started this diet. Hopefully she will agree that the next three months will show us what I can do.
-
Yes, it most certainly is common on a diet like this one. Not only are you detoxing from caffeine and other chemicals but also sugar itself. Lots of us have gone through this and you should start to feel better in a day, maybe two. Take some painkillers and keep drinking the water. You will come out the other side feeling a lot better for it.
