This is true. But at least MY plate could be warm… 🙂

Ten and a half miles? That’s the sort of walk I dream of undertaking but never manage it. Sounds wonderful. Well done 🙂 I need to find a walking buddy. Or join a group or something. There must be one locally.

I actually dug my coastal path pack of maps out yesterday, found them in the drawer with the tape measure. Dropped them on hubby’s lap, which is as much of a hint as I needed to give him. 125 or so miles of coastal path. I want to do it. It’s on the list. Hopefully we can make a start on it when the children are back at school.

  • Hi, my name is Julia and thanks for starting the group, and yes, happy to join in with my friend, we both start our diet tomorrow, however I had a day 0. today fasting – just taking in water and running 6.25 km.
I have been dieting all my life. From being an obese teenager (cca. 100 kg/176 cm) I have lost all my excess weight in 6 months (to 65 kg), but with some ups and downs over the past 10 years, all has crept back up (especially during the past, very stressful 2.5 years).
I’m no longer happy with my life and when I look into the mirror, I don’t recognize myself anymore. Besides the aesthetics (which are very important for a single, 30 year old woman), I’m growing more concerned about the long term health implications of carrying excess weight, given my family history of diabetes and morbid obesity. I have been dieting more intensively in the past 2.5 years, but caught myself dieting to fatness, as one cheat-day became 2 or 3, then came the guilt and self-loathing, drastic cutback on calorie intake and daily aerob exercises, until became overconfident or felt lonely and lost control completely.
So here I am, once again, still believing I can break the vicious circle and kick-start a happier life and happier self with the 800 BSD.
Good luck for all of us!!! IT’S ON!!

I went for a really nice walk this afternoon – my usual along the tow path; The destination I usually have in mind is Victoria Park, but I often start flagging and checking maps and my pedometer after about two miles or so to see how much further. I got to the park without even thinking about it, so I must be getting fitter -then continued on and came back along the Thames path.
A lot less busy that it normally is on a Sunday – I guess lots of people have gone away for the bank holiday – either that or the sky was a bit dark as if it was going to rain.
About ten and a half miles altogether.

sunshine-girl, I do know that people sometimes don’t hear what’s really been said, or focus on just one bit of what they hear.

But a few months ago I invited a health educator to speak to my ladies’ group. She knows about the BSD, and we’d been talking about it. She was interested and could see its effectiveness. But when she started to talk t the group it was the party line about carbs. The ladies know what I’m doing, what I’m not eating. So listening to her was difficult. It was the ‘everybody needs carbs at every meal’ mantra.

Sometimes I really do despair about our health care professionals – or at least some of them.

I worked with medics for several years, some were great and others less so. So I do know they vary, and everyone has a bad day. But said nurse told me she was handing out BSD info to patients. Apparently she did not do that in this case. Which makes me wonder 😱

At least I’m not due to see her again for a few months – unless I want to go in to see her. I think I’ll wait!

Might feel better after my few days away – I needed a break so as I said earlier, 3 nights away in York 😃 Need to get my head back in gear after a more stressful than usual few weeks. Nothing BSD related. I’d got the days off booked, but only decided on Friday to go away. B&B booked. Train tickets booked. Just need to pack a few things tomorrow.

BSD wise – cooked breakfast at B&B. I usually eat a cooked breakfast, so that’s ok – just watch portion size, avoid toast etc. I don’t normally eat during the day, so that shouldn’t be a problem. In the evening I may find somewhere to eat, or I might just buy something in the supermarket to take back to my room, depending on what I fancy doing. And Imshould get lots of extra walking done, going round all the shops. 😃

It’s the end of week 7. I have lost 4 pounds this week but it has felt very disjointed. Went to pot slightly this week when I overindulged for a couple of days.
Hopefully week 8 will be a more tranquil week.
My 8 week log will be completed next week but it may take a couple more weeks to hit a 3 stone loss.
I will decide after next week how to continue with my weight loss goals.
Best wishes and good luck to everyone.

    Hi Christi

Everything I had that day could be added to for non BSDers

Breakfast could have had added mushrooms and toast.
Lunch could have had bread and soup added
Dinner could have had rice or potatoes added

I cooked the salmon dish as I described it for my family – 6 adults – with the quantities multiplied up and gave them bread as well. They all loved it

I think you should plan your meals around yourself and then add the non BSD extras for the family.

    Hope that helps!

Silicone egg poachers are great (not to diss your new toy Lucky!)
I used to find the eggs stuck a bit, then I stopped coating the cups with olive oil, and they’ve been fine – sometimes I have to peer at the empty cup to see if its the dirty one or not.
The only time the eggs get too hard is when I forget what time I put them on!
Added bonus is that towards the end of cooking I add tomatoes to the water to warm them through, and replace the pan lid with a plate so that I have a warm plate.

Most evenings, I have been giving my OH the same meals as me but in larger portions, sometimes with the addition of carbs, sometimes not. Sometimes he will look for something else afterwards – ice cream, or a few biscuits, but quite often not. He has lost almost a stone in the period that I have been doing the BSD and dropped 17lb.
Hope you manage to find a way forward oldbluejeans. Maybe get yourself an internal mantra to keep you focused and on track. Keep us posted on progress.

  • wow – I’d never really thought about the mechanics of how you lose fat Sunshine Girl

And the sitting down comment reminded me of a recentish ‘conversation’ from (note, from, not with, more of a monologue) a taxi driver who went on all the way home from the west end about the benefits of squatting to poo rather than sitting.
You know when you’re in an enclosed space with someone and you’d really prefer not to be 🙂

Looks like you have a plan to move forward Kereru. We all have stumbles along the way, with temptation getting the better of us and with some days being more than 800cals – but I bet you have some under too, so it balances out long term. Why not try omelette with salad for a change, or fish and stir-fried spinach perhaps. It’s always a good idea measure as well as weigh, as it can be surprising how measurements can shrink, even if the scales are being stubborn.

Keep going and I’m sure you will be posting loses again soon.

Captainlynne, Sometimes people come out of a consultation with the wrong end of the proverbial stick. I once nursed a woman who was in for a hysterectomy and the doctor explained in great detail what he was going to do. When he left I asked if there was anything she was not sure about and she said ‘no, fine, as long as I can still have more children’ dooh, but that’s what happens. Your ears turn to cotton wool and your brain goes fuzzy. My mum was T2 and swore for years that the doctor gave her a prescription for 7 Mars Bars a week on the NHS. My brother, who is a nurse, said the doctor told her to keep a Mars Bar in the fridge cut into portions JUST IN CASE SHE HAD A HYPO. I know there are nurses as reported on here who still tell people to my Mars Bars but I think that is all they hear. Anyway, why would a nurse say not to eat tomatoes. It is possible your friend might have acid reflux or something similar and that was just part of the advice.

If this is not the case make sure you drill it into her when you next see her. We must keep banging the drum. I have just read the NHS guidelines for weight loss and they recommend low carbs and, although they didnt say very low cal, they did say all the things said about rapid weight loss (put it all back on etc) is a myth. They also recognise that the high carbs for diabetics is still being advised but is now very unwise. This led to a link to the American Journal of Medicine which also recommends low carbs, so do not fret, the message is getting through. Slooooooowly.

Morning and Happy Monday. Weight for start of this week 131.3!! another 1.2 loss. very happy!!! An interesting weekend with a dinner out Friday night and Saturday celebrating 3 birthdays with family. But still a loss so am stoked!! I was especially careful on Saturday and made up for any overindulgence on Sunday by only having brunch and dinner. Looks like that worked LOL!
So – have got the meals sorted. Now to get the exercise in. I’m up one level in the building I work at, so am going to use the stairs. And going to try and get some walking in during the day. I have found an old pedometer, so will start wearing that and track how many steps I do a day.
    Onwards and downwards!!!

Remember my diabetes nurse? She who was really supportive and telling patients about the BSD?

    Well …….

Tonight I was speaking to someone who has just been to see the same nurse for her annual mot results and she was told she is borderline diabetic. Just to add to her other health issues. So – what advice was she given?

She was told to watch how much sugar she eats. If she wants a biscuit or slice of cake to just have half. And not to eat tomatoes.

At my last visit I thought the nurse was on board with the BSD. But now …!

Feels like I was wasting my time talking to her!😱😥

    Hi igorasusual,
That is incredible! I’m amazed, I wish I could keep carbs and calories as low as you, I do have the added problem of having to cook for two died in the wool carb eaters, in other words, bread, potatoes, rice, pasta, cakes, puddings, you think of any food that is made with flour and sugar, my two eat it in abundance, I have to say I am weak, I succumb more often than I should.
The first eight weeks,I was fully supported by husband, I lost just under two stone, since then however, they have got bored with my ‘diet’ and have gone off piste!
You will have to give me a few ideas, the only day I let go a bit is Sunday, I will have to sit down with the bsd book and take a long look at what I am eating and what I can eat to keep my calories and carbs down!
    Thank you for the inspiration.
    Christine.

  • Think this is something a lot of us have struggled with to some degree. I try to limit fluid in the evening, which seems to keep me to a maximum of one toilet visit during the night. I try to space my fluid intake evenly through the day and to help with this, I have a policy during the day, that if I go into the kitchen I have to drink a glass of water while I’m there. Obviously this doesn’t happen in the evenings.

Hope you manage to find a solution TazzieDevil. Broken sleep saps energy, so it’s important you find a way forward.

Good luck – let us know hoe you get on.

From you last sentence, I’m guessing you have been struggling on your BSD quest recently. Be kind to yourself, refocus and push ahead with it – it will come right eventually.

    My positives for today:
~ Got out in the garden and started sorting out the ‘jungle’.
~ Started to planning the refurb of our conservatory, to make it a useable room.
~ By removing a dying fir tree, we have gained a lovely new view from our kitchen.

Hoping for a good result on the scales tomorrow and planning to have a turf out of baggy clothes this coming week.

Posting early today, we have had the three granddaughters since tea time yesterday and a busy time with them too, we had to get them to a wedding this lunchtime, breakfast them, lunch them then get them ready for dad picking them up after we collected them from the wedding, they weren’t going to the reception, to top it all the middle child had a nightmare so was in bed with us from 4am! I don’t think I slept after that!

So today, weight 12.2.4 no change again,

    Food,
Breakfast passion fruit, yogurt and tea
Midday meal, beef, broccoli, green beans, cavolo nero, 1 Yorkshire pudding, gravy, tiny spoon of rhubarb crumble, more rhubarb than crumble, made with Truvia sugar, and water
Evening meal, egg and cheese, 1 slice malt loaf with butter, and water
    Supper, coffee and nuts.
Over both calories and carbs, however I always let go a bit on a Sunday, always have even in lent, Sunday is celebration day every week.
    Off to bed early tonight!
    Christine.

    Hi Jan

I’m sure you’re right. It’s also possible that GPs have to be seen to be offering statins. My doctor, who is really excellent, did all the computer tests but still couldn’t get me into the ‘at risk’ group. As I said to her, the cholesterol limit had been 5.2 for as long as I could remember and my cholesterol had always been at that figure. The fact that the powers to be, maybe with a push from the pharmaceutical industry, brought the healthy limit down to 4.5 was irrelevant as far as I was concerned as my level was still steady.

I really wouldn’t have statins mainly because I know a few women who have actually been made ‘ill’ by them. I have walking difficulties so the last thing I need are painful and aching joints!!!! Have enough to contend with as it is.

My real goal is to dump Metformin. My husband started on them a few months ago. I don’t think he needs them. Although I’ve not mentioned this eating plan to him he has actually decided he can live without potatoes and rice, probably because I don’t cook them anymore!!!. Bread etc will take a little longer before the penny drops. He’s a TOFI!!!

    Hi Jan,

Glad to hear you’re having a great holiday!
Was following your posts to Lucky, and something struck a chord…had ‘forgotten’ to factor in the role that stress can play on cortisol levels (and the way that can interfere with the weight loss process), so that; combined with the famine reaction may be contributing to the frequent stalls / plateaus in my weight loss.

So together with changing up my regular foods, may need to be more mindful of my emotional state…recently I have simply been gritting my teeth and ‘just getting on with it’ …maybe not so healthy! 😵😕😅

    Thank you🌻

Thanks Jan! That makes a lot of sense, it just seemed ‘too’ big a loss for such a short a time, and probably is, so yes, a plateau is probably coming soon.

That is worded better than I made it sound this morning, when I was waffling about first week weight losses again. When you reach that certain point in a diet and nothing you do seems to work. Switch it up a bit, do something a little differently and then it goes great guns again. I’ve had a lot of food for thought today (no pun intended) and it could be some or even a little bit of all of the suggestions made. I’ll keep a watchful eye on how things progress now. It is interesting though!

Thank you very much 🙂 Hope you’re enjoying your holiday so far 🙂

    Hi Lucky

In reply to your query about good weight loss this week. Firstly if you think back to SLW or WW days we would consume about 1500 -1800 cals and expect to loose 2-3 lbs a week. Scientifically a 1lb loss is achieved by reducing the energy imput by 3,500 cals. Add the additional factor your expressed reduction in stress you will achieve a greater weight loss. Stress is a obstacle to successful weight loss due to the chemicals released within our bodies.
So if you have lost 8 lbs then you possibly have not reduced your energy input by 8 X 3,500 so just be aware the next few days will most likely plateau.
I have found over the years one way will work well for a while, then you have to subtly change it. We are not on a starvation diet as this plan involves plenty of protein. So it’s not rebound weight loss. But I would suggest you read doc m section on strengthening exercises, so you are burning fat not muscle. If your heel is still playing up.
Enjoy your good fortune, and change it when it slackens of. You have a wealth of knowledge now, use it all to achieve your goal.

But delighted for you lucky. Keep smiling.😎😎😎

This is true about the nasty undies… it is also true about having something under a hospital gown, I’m surprised actually that I wasn’t made to learn my lesson the hard way, that is usually how my life goes! Not something I would advocate doing now that I’m 40. However, I was 24…

I’ve just realised. I am the exact weight now as I was starting that WW stint I spoke of. 14 stone 11. That time I got down to 12 stone 10…

Grrrrr… bloody messing about! Tap tap, slice, done. No. Five minutes peeling the bloody thing when son had already said just take top off so he could eat it with a spoon from the shell.

I won’t eat it, I can tell you now. Nothing wrong with it, I make a lovely roast dinner, second only to my Mum, apparently (pffffffffffft – thanks family!) but after I’ve stood there all afternoon and cooked it and dished it up, I don’t want it. It only happens with a roast dinner, no other meal. I’ve stood for hours batch cooking curries from 6 am til 6 pm before now and I’ll gladly sit down with one at 7 pm. It’s odd. The only exception is Christmas dinner and probably that is only because there would be a big fuss if I didn’t.

These boots will NEVER be too big Tokyo. Trust me. 40 lbs down and half an inch off one and nothing off the other. It’s not happening.

I always took it that the clean undies rule ‘in case run over by a bus’ was about not being shamed by nasty grey ones, in which case no undies not so much of a problem – though having something under the hospital gown would feel more secure!
