Had a good first day, it helps knowing that there is a team of us all in the same boat.
Had a protein shake with almond milk for breakfast
Protein bar mid morning
Veg soup for lunch
Dinner lamb and broccoli.
Slightly over on calories, but the lamb was left over from yesterday.
I’ve had 917 cals, 64g carbs and 90g protein.
Out to choir tonight so will have black tea at break time.
Overall a good first day.
I have at least 6 stones to lose so am setting my first target at 2 stones off. I am 5 8 and quite fit. I go to the gym and aquafit and enjoy walking. Just need to do more!

on 10 Oct 2016 at 17:44 in Welcome to the BSDThank you loophole. Just a week in for us on the diet so still working things out. Is it maximum 50 carbs a day?
Just had a bit of a calorie shock as dinner tonight was over 5oo calories. Spanish Chicken out of the recipe book,(yummy)
but we have been well below 800 calories over the weekend as we were really busy. So I suppose its swings and roundabouts! -

on 10 Oct 2016 at 17:42 in Welcome to the BSDYes, the French rate of diabetes is only 1% higher but you would expect it to be lower as they have around 10% obesity we have 25%, and they have 15% overweight whereas we have 35% – don’t quote me, that is from memory. They eat a big baguette every day though not many potatoes or rice and pasta, they do like their gateaux.
I think my lows were caused because I didn’t eat enough of the right things, everything low calorie, low fat and salads made of lettuce, cucumber and tomatoes with a bit of chicken or tuna. They were also happening after maybe 50 minutes swimming and I just wanted to know what to eat, found out on here, 2 or 3 prunes and a couple of mouthsful of Greek yoghurt. Everything is fine now. All ready and off to Zumba.

Congratulations Janrg1!
That is impressive. Thanks for sharing that as it is really motivating to hear about such a nice amount of weightloss when I am only on my second day. -

Most of us count carbs and calories (easy to do with My Fitness Pal or Fat Secret) and try to stick to 800 calories and 50g carbs. Most people lose on those figures. Hope that helps. -
Thank you. I hope it all goes well for you. I still need to lose quite a lot of weight so 800 calories will still be big in my life for quite a while yet but for the first time in my life I actually believe that it is possible for me to do it.

Evening Lucia,
You are so right regarding feeding other people. There are feeders. Sorry but in the past I have been guilty of that. I didn’t it mostly when beening “good” on a low fat diet. I feed up my OH and kids. Back in the kitchen after my “Oh but aren’t I good” lowfat meal I would be eating more cheese, more biscuits and another slice of cake. Now I wouldn’t dare cheat on myself. My OH is learning when enough is enough and I am no longer a pusher of food.
In my head I am trying to plan Christmas food. Now that is another time when I have been a pusher of food. We shall definitely start with prawns and salad with a dressing rather than a bought in cocktail sauce and its hidden staches and sugars. There will be some made vegetable soup for those that want it. We shall have a turkey dinner but without umpteen different servings of potatoes. What about pudding? Usually my sil will make us one. This year it is down to me. I will search out a sensible recipe and not make too big a Christmas pudding. With 14 sitting down to dinner we won’t then be eating a great deal of pudding. I will serve cream not starchy custard.
The plan is coming together.
Onwards and downwards.

on 10 Oct 2016 at 17:20 in Welcome to the BSDSunshine-girl that is so strange that the French have a higher level of diabetes than in the UK when they are not so overweight and their diet is touted as being far superior to ours. A real puzzle.
Your nutritionist was truly bonkers – your diet before seeing him/her was really good. Do you think your lows were caused by any meds you were taking?
You have definitely found a good doctor who supports you on the BSD. It’s great that you are spreading the word on the BSD with your talk to your French class.
It is a shame that your mum got it wrong about the mars bar a day – a whopping 39.9 carbs a bar – but it is so easy to misunderstand or mis-hear advice. My diabetes clinic suggested keeping jellybabies for hypos and taking 4 to give you a 10g of carbs/sugar boost. Luckily I don’t like jellybabies.

I started last week but went off track this weekend. My sister got married and it was 3 days of none stop food, sweets and alcohol. I even ended up getting sick off all the greasy food after the wedding. As such I have started again fresh today! I am in a much better place not having to worry about such an event again lol! Holidays are not an issues for me truly – but this wedding was stressful!
I am armed with the knowledge you have given me! I will be consuming 1000 calories on the days I workout (bootcamp) and 800 on the ones I do not. I also aim to stick to 50g carbs or less. I will keep you posted!

Hi Everyone,
I started the 8 Week Blood Sugar Diet yesterday!
As Princess wrote, “. . .and I lived to tell about it”.I lost about 35 lbs. five years ago, and lately I’ve been seeing the scale rise so I want to get the weight back down and go down further this time around. I read about this diet through a google search. What really interested me the most was the possibility of improving my blood sugar. I had gestational diabetes many years ago and know that because of this, my chances are so much higher of getting Type 2 Diabetes. So far, I’ve managed to not develop the disease, but as I get older, I know it’s a real possibility. I’ve definitely been in the pre-diabetes stage for quite a while.
It is great to read your posts and the support is going to be so good for me while I get through the next 8 weeks.
I’m looking forward to getting to you know you better through your messages and I sincerely appreciate your support. -
Thank you very much for your help.
Good tip for the salads.
-
We will! I can’t believe I have kept the weight off this long. Come on last pound……….

Hi Spring79
I guess it was expected that people may diet in couples or with family hence the portion sizes.
I am doing this on my own and what I am doing is either :
1. For hot meals, finding freezable recipes e.g. Aubergine Lasagne, making the whole thing and assembling in 4 individual tin foil trays for cooking, freezing, then reheating at a later date, or putting one uncooked in the fridge for a meal later in the week.
2. For cold meals (salads), just halving or quartering the quantity for that recipe and have the same meal in a couple of days to save on buying too many ingredients
3. I plan my meals weekly and try to make sure that for that week there are many of the same ingredients in the meal so I can use it in a few recipes. Then the next week, choose different recipes so it doesn’t get too ‘samey’Hope that helps?

on 10 Oct 2016 at 16:17 in BSD Way of LifeHi All.
Oooh Captain Lynne if you keep going down at this rate you will probably be only half the woman you used to be by Advent lol!
How are you doing rozydozy?
Things still going in the right direction here. I have incorporated slightly more items into my weekly allowance to see what would happen. One gluten free crumpet (long story) , two glasses of prosecco, half a large banana, small bar of “eat natural” fruit & nut bar with dark chocolate in it and macadamia nuts and cranberries (yum!!!). This was spread over the whole week and not more than one item per day. I did it this way so I could see the resulting spikes if there were going to be any by looking at my daily weight first thing in the morning.
I didn’t put any on at all , and happy to report a pound and three quarter drop.
That means if things go well this week and I can shift a little more I will go through the “third of my starting weight barrier”.
I also don’t ever remember being under 10 stone in my life. We didn’t have weighing scales when I was growing up.
Hope everyone has a good week. -

on 10 Oct 2016 at 16:07 in Starting the BSDGood morning all! Official week 1 weigh in shows a 6 pound loss for me! I’m very pleased as I bounced up a pound or two on a few days, and then back down. I’m still fighting the terrible headache that I thought was diet-related but it’s hung on so long that I think something else may be going on. I also have some tummy upset, so maybe I’m just getting sick.
I’m extremely hungry this morning for some reason. Drinking lots of water to squelch it. Maybe a few almonds too.
Well done to everyone on your losses! Excited to see what week 2 brings! -
Hi,
I am trying to make a plan for all week. However, I am wondering why most of the recipes in the book are intended to serve 2/4 persons.
As I am the only one on a diet and I am cooking only for me, I got confused.
I could I know what is the quantity right for me? It is so complicated 🙁
Thanks for the help

on 10 Oct 2016 at 15:34 in Starting the BSDMonday mornings aren’t normally the most joyous time for most of us – but today, well, yes. Joyous !! After a mere 48 hours following the plan (prefer that word to diet), I have already lost 3 and a half pounds . I am a very happy bunny. I know the weight loss is usually fairly dramatic in week 1 – but I don’t care. The large amount I need to lose has been such a daunting problem for quite a while now, so to think that it can come off at this rate, as opposed to the one and a half pound to two pounds a week that Weight Watchers approve of is fantastic.
I will be looking forward to my ‘proper’ week 1 weigh-in on Saturday morning.
And no hunger pangs – would have liked something sweet as I was sitting watching Strictly on Saturday night – but that was more habit rather than actual hunger.
The halloumi with green beans and parmesan I had for lunch yesterday was gorgeous. I am trying the recipe for cauliflower cheese tonight. My cooking is improving no end !
Have a lovely week x

on 10 Oct 2016 at 15:22 in Starting the BSDWow, well done everybody. Some great losses. I’ve lost around 2kgs in the first week which I’m really pleased with.
However, I’m feeling dreadful this week. I’ve a sore throat that has given me 4 very broken nights so I’m just exhausted. I’ve also got the beginnings of a migraine I think (spots in eyes) and a random pain in my knee that came on this morning. I’m really beginning to wonder if surviving on 800 calories a day is actually doing me any good when I’m looking after 3 young children on my own (hubby currently overseas for 3 months).
Sorry, having a bad day. Is anyone else feeling this dreadful?! -

on 10 Oct 2016 at 15:18 in Fast ExerciseHi
My solution is to have breakfast of scrambled eggs (two eggs) and smoked salmon with at least two cups of tea. On the ride I only drink water. When I get back I usually have something like sliced steak (about 150g) with one of of the rocket salads with walnuts and a small bit of cheese from one of the books plus plenty of water-around a litre. This has worked OK for the summer but I’m not sure how it will hold up in the winter as I find I need hot food in the winter.
Generally I find that now that I’ve been on the programme for a while I don’t need as big meals so that diet seems to work well for a fifty mile cycle as I can now say awake for the rest of the day post cycle when I used to conk out for a half hour sleep post cycling. I’m not sure about all the preloading stuff as I used to do this in my distance running days but now with cycling I think that as its sustained but low inetnsity (in my case-average 15mph) I think the body uses whats available i.e. whats in the stomach first then whats in reserve-hopefully fat. Seems to be working as I’m down from 119kg to 103kg in seven weeks with a target of 95kg.
Hope this helps and good luck. Let me know how you get on.
best

I have started today, accidentally missed breakfast this morning but had a feta salad for lunch.
I’m currently at my sister’s and have to cook vegetarian meals for us plus the fact that the whole family is allergic to peppers and chillis (which seem to be the ‘go tos’ for most veggi receipes!) which is making life a bit interesting.
I’ve crept into my 60s and need to lose a couple of stone and exercise (a lot!) more and my always on the low side blood pressure is creeping up. I may wander over to the Facebook page – I could probably do with some support! -
thanks soosiewoosy, I’m going to check that out right now. ☺

First weigh in and 8lb plus some inch weight lost. More importantly I have not felt like picking in between meals, have loved the food so far, kind of Med meets Middle East. Have knocked off the sweeteners in tea/coffee and drunk less than a can of diet fizzy juice per day. Amazing for me!!Best of all is the energy I have, now putting this into positive work as opposed to thinking and eating food. Have downloaded Headspace to my phone and the 10 mins a day really helps. Have felt dizzy occasionally, but a couple of glasses of water seem to sort this.So far so good in week 2.
-
Thanks Carb_Addict, yes your right on both counts ,my body will take time to figure out what it’s doing and if you stick to plan you must lose.
Good luck with your journey ,I’m just a few days behind you and thanks for the words of encouragement and yes the fruit and vegetables are amazing here in Turkey and every bite of food I eat seems to taste amazing on bsd, just wish cauliflower was easily available here,it’s not here very long so next time I find I buy all the stall and freeze it lol, -

on 10 Oct 2016 at 14:33 in Welcome to the BSDKrysia, doctors are more worried about elderly diabetics going into a coma than suffering the future effects. There was a lady on here a few weeks ago who said her doctor wanted her bloods to run high to be safe because she was old (67) and I had a bit of a rant about that. I used to think my mum was lying (she exaggerated a lot) but I have seen the Mars Bar advice is common though usually it is to keep a MB in the fridge JUST IN CASE you go hypo, not to eat one every day like Mum did. She probably just misunderstood.
I finally went to a nutritionist here in France because I now speak the language and I was having lows in the afternoon, particularly after exercise, and wanted to know what I should eat. It seemed I was grabbing a quick sandwich, which went against trying to lose weight. The thinking was that if I had reasonably high glucose all the time, evenly though the day, I wouldn’t have any lows. That resulted in 5kg weight gain and bloods of 8.2 in 6 months. My doctor went mad and thought it was me, so I showed him my diet sheet and he said he didn’t eat as much as she told me to. It was 2 carb snacks per day plus carb with every meal. So I went from yog for breakfast, salad for lunch and soup for dinner (or spag bol at weekends) to cereal for B. salad and pasta for lunch, soup with bread for dinner and a bowl of cereal at bedtime. Help. Never mind, we have got it sorted now and even my doctor thinks this diet is great but he says he could never ask a French person to give up their baguette. I am giving a talk in my French class on my diet and have been doing some research. Strange fact, France has one of the worlds lowest overweight or obesity problems but higher rate of diabetes than the UK.

Hi Mairimac,
I eased myself into the 800kcal BSD by starting at the regular BSD (unlimited calories) for four days beforehand. During those four days I lost no weight and was grumpy but my energy started to go up a bit. So don’t despair – your body will be adjusting. Now on Day 8 of the 800 kcal/weight week program and my energy levels have been mostly up but I have also crashed out on a couple of days, including yesterday. I assume it’s because my body is adapting to a radically lower calorie count. I have always struggled to lose weight on conventional diet plans where unlimited carbs are allowed, but so far the 800 kcal is working for me. If you stick to it religiously then there is no way you cannot not lose weight. Planning is key for sure. Good luck and yes you CAN do it. Enjoy those amazing salads you get in Turkey!

on 10 Oct 2016 at 14:28 in Welcome to the BSDMy next appointment is October 31st and I’m just waiting to see what all my blood test results are. I’d lost a few kilos at my last review and the nurse did say ‘well done, keep going’. I’m almost certain she will ask me how I’ve lost this weight, maybe 10+kilos, and believe me I’ll tell her!!!! Yes, you should start a ‘What the doctor said’ thread sunshine-girl could be very interesting!
I’m just hoping my blood tests show an improvement in all areas. Although in saying that I really only have two areas of concern my Hba1c and my liver function test. My blood pressure and cholesterol are pretty normal. My total cholesterol has been 5.2 for as long as I can remember. Suddenly 12 months ago it dropped to 4.5 and then last May it was 4.8. I had started having low fat Greek yogurt and the doctor said some studies had indicated that low fat dairy helped to reduce cholesterol. Will be interesting to see if it’s gone any higher now I use full fat Total and butter!!! I’d forgotten how good an omelette is when cooked in butter!

Have just read your post. It is so sad that the medics didn’t pick up the diabetes earlier. I am sure that I had diabetes for years also before it was picked up. I also lost weight the 6 months before being diagnosed and also was thirsty and tired. What scary advice the doctor gave your mum. They couldn’t have given worse advice. It makes you want to cry because it is so bad.
It is almost unbelievable that a doctor would diagnose depression and not diabetes.
The nutritionist saying you must eat 300 carbs a day – that is almost criminal to advise that huge amount. No wonder your blood sugars shot through the roof. This is such a catalogue of errors and it is played out every day all over the world. We are so lucky we found BSD – but there are so many others who are following blindly the current guidelines on diabetes – just like I did until 1st May this year.
I’m with you on the growing old disgracefully. My feeling is that we will be so healthy that we will not need to go into the old folks home. I am hoping to keep on working into my 80s – not as long hours as I am doing now, but to keep on working and enjoying life.
-
I’m starting today. I’ve had my usual breakfast of porridge and I’ve had bacon and eggs for lunch. Then, I skim read the book and feel a trip to the supermarket is in order!
-
I think that carbs in vegetables don’t really count, Unless you are looking at carbs in white potatoes, sweetcorn, peas, and those types of things. This is where the counting apps aren’t terribly helpful I don’t think because carbs are offset by the amount of fibre within a food. and of course vegetables are full of fibre which is probably why they don’t really count. last year when I managed to drop sugar entirely out of my diet last year I basically only counted the carbs that were in things like white carbs, i.e. white bread white potatoes pasta rice flour sugar et cetera. The carbs contained in high-fibre vegetables pulses and cereals don’t behave in the same way because they release sugar slowly. Of course the veterans on this site may have a different approach and experience so would love to hear from them too!
-
Hi again,
Sorry, third post of the day, I am confused, if we are to stick to around 50g of Carb and 800 calories how can we eat so much vegetables which are low in calories but higher in carb than the protein which is low in carb but then puts the calorie count up, this is how I have worked out after using the fatsecret App.
Help please 🙂

After what the eye doctor said I did think I might just chicken out of telling the diabetic doctors that I was on the BSD at my next appointment – I absolutely hate confrontation and will do anything to avoid it. As I didn’t want them to think that the standard diabetic diet of starchy carbs had led to the weight loss I thought I would just say nothing and just say the weight loss just happened but I didn’t do anything to cause it. Very cowardly, I know. But when my friend pointed out that if I didn’t tell them about the BSD it would lead to a barrage of tests and scans to find out exactly what was causing the over 2stone weight loss I promptly changed my mind. Also, we owe it to other diabetics to show to the medics that the BSD does work. So I will go in with professor taylors notes for the professionals from this website and will report back on what happened.
