Thanks everyone, this is really, really helpful. I’m going to try the hot drink trick @lindarina suggets – a hot drink in the evening is nice anyway ๐Ÿ™‚

I’m also going to add in a bit more fat; @annie the cream in coffee sounds amazing. I keep forgetting I’m allowed real butter and cream!

  • Thank you sunshine-girl. Think I was just looking for permission to throw out clothes I’ve not even worn!!!! But I think it could be false economy having them altered. Yes I noticed your ‘new’ blood test but just put it down to a slip of the finger!

Beagler I think most people will agree that it gets easier over time as you become to enjoy this way of eating more. Don’t be too hard on yourself and maybe just concentrate on one day at a time. The usual ideas to stop the nibbles are drinking water, maybe with ice and a slice, eating a few nuts, almonds or walnuts, or having a square or two maximum of 90% dark chocolate which is the one that always works for me. If you’re not into dark chocolate start with 70% and work up to 90%. Lindt is my favourite although I was given some Green & Blacks 70% and that was OK.

Another idea is to get an app like fatsecret.co.uk or .com if you’re in the US. Logging all your food, especially if you can plan in the morning, certainly concentrates the mind. Good luck!

Are there any other T1’s new to this who would like to join me on my journey? I’ve tried various diets in the past (weight watchers, slimming world etc) but just don’t have much luck with them. I’ve now been following the BSD for 4 days and am thrilled and amazed at the weight loss (4lb already!) and how my bg is steady rather than spiking up and down all day long (and NO hypos, hurray!). I’ve had a shot at HFLC last year but didn’t really feel it was very ‘healthy’, I’m certainly enjoying this approach for a more.

“The fat is melting” is quickly becoming my mantra, especially when I’m hungry!

Hi sunshine girl…yes we have always grown courgettes but before BSD and because they are so prolific I ended giving most of them away. My first year of owning an allotment I grew five courgette plants and harvested about 1million courgettes๐Ÿ˜ฑMy husband doesn’t like them unless I turn them into cakes. This year we grew one plant which was enough but next year I will grow two. I do love using them as substitute pasta. Lovely made into a BSD lasagne.
Next year like you I will rethink what vegetables I grow. We have loads of berries growing which will be so useful. I might grow more cucumbers as I love them in salads and I also add a slice or two to my sparkling water with mint and lemon. also on my list will be lots more herbs.

MissZiggy, you will have to try grown courgette. I am told they are dead easy. We have the usual salad crops but I don’t eat so many tomatoes now, I have a freezer full ready for making into sauce. I will be rethinking my vegi garden this year. P.S. If I want sweetcorn I just reach into the field and pick some (permission of the farmer) but there is an optimum time between being ripe and turning to stone (they feed the animals or sell it for corn products like oil)

Let’s get healthier and slimmer together.
We will if we really want to and believe that we can.

    Be kind to yourself.

I agree you should not be eating ‘low fat’ which is another word for packed with sugars and chemicals. Try 2 eggs scrambled with an ounce of cheese grated in and a pinch of chilli – cooked in butter or a good rapeseed oil of course.

All diets are hard or we would all be slim and gorgeous (I’m gorgeous but not slim LOL). The difference with this diet is you SHOULD be eating a varied and tasty range of foods. I do a menu once a week and never eat the same thing 2 days in a row even if I have cooked loads, that’s what freezers are for. Also, you will see such quick results that you are super motivated to carry on. I am in my 7th month and, besides holidays and Christmas, stick to the 800 most days and always stick to the low carb.

Keep going, it is good for you and you have done so well so far.

  • Hi, everyone. Really impressed by all your successes, and even more by the times someone “dropped off the wagon” for a period, then got back on again. That’s my problem – breakfast, morning, lunch all fine. Afternoon a bit hungry. Dinner fine – then nibble nibble nibble all evening, telling myself not to, while I scoff bread and butter. I’ve had a very wobbly first week, with minimal weight loss, but I will try to buckle down again and stick to the rules. I am only pre, not (yet) type 2, but my feet are numb round the edges and my left shoulder is giving me gyp. Like my teacher said many years ago, Must Try Harder!

  • Throw them away, you deserve better. You can get some decent clothes really cheap at Primark or Matalan or lots of other stores. They have done their time with you, let someone else have them. BTW having them altered can cost more than new so unless it is something really precious, chuck it.

Just looked back at my post and see I have invented a new blood test. Call me a pioneer.

Just remember that we all found it hard at times but that time is a great healer and even reducing from normal intake without going to 800 will have a positive effect. The 800/day does it sooner than say 1000/day. The length of fast is important between last meal of one day to first in another. Lots of good advice and evidence that you are not alone on here Annie. Distractions are really useful as hunger pangs can disappear if not dwelt upon. Remember too that we are effectictly addicted to sugars and need to wean off them. We are choosing a Cold Turkey kind of methodology – that works with some others to help support us. I am 11 months on now and still at target (mostly) ,so just hang on in there and don’t beat yourself up. We mostly enjoy seeng the benefits quite soon after starting. It took me 10 weeks to lose over 16kg and it was not that hard once I got into a routine. Major tip = don’t buy “bad” stuff and you will not eat it. It is often harder at work but hopefully your colleagues will soon be on side and encourage you too. Good luck…

Hello, HNY to you too, I am nearly one year in and still hovering at my target area. Good to hear the site is still doing a great job. WOE? Walking on eggshells? I thought no? Then I had to Google to find WOE = Way of Eating!!! I do not really need to consider this anymore having successfully changed my habits and WOE and thus I have prevented the previous food related woes from occurring and I no longer have to W on E!

All the best to the new comers, BSD/5:2 are so well known, practised and proven now that it is more or less a standad method.

All the best to everyone changing their lives for the better from two very much lighter and happier people here…

  • Sunshine-girl that’s great not even a week and over half way there! Good to hear your BG is improving as well.

    Advice please!!!!

Ok, so this morning I tried on some holiday clothes. A couple of dresses are just too long so I could have them shortened. Problem is I have a top that now looks like a dress and I’m wondering if it’s worth spending the money to have it altered. I have a pair of trousers that match which are now ‘baggy’. Taking onboard all your comments about baggy clothes I’m just wondering if I should just send them to the charity shop!! As I’m still losing I don’t really want to have things altered that will, hopefully, be too big again in the not too distant future. Help!

Welcome Collingwood, all I drink is green tea or water with lemon or just plain water. If your tea and coffee are black then they are okay, in fact some would suggest cutting out so much coffee but that would be another withdrawal for you, it is hard enough when the carb withdrawal kicks in. Although you might try to reduce over time. When I want something more than water I add about a tablespoon of unsweetened apple or cranberry juice, but I so love water. I quite like coconut water but keep it to one a day and an average glass is 45 calories and 10 carbs so just make sure you count it in. Maybe not too often.

I used to live in a place called Randwick when I first moved to Aus but that was 40 years ago.

Back on BSD ~1000cals to kick start this year but I’ll go onto the Med WOE again shortly.. once those ghastly carbs have been cleaned out of my system!

Be good to hear from the old skoolers who were with me at the outset in May/June last year. Hope you’re all thriving!

  • Hi everyone, just day 3 for me and already lost 2.7 lbs and BG is back down to 98 (5.4). I did increase my insulin from 22 units to 24 to counteract the holiday overload and will leave it there for another week before reducing down again. My HbQ1c is not due until early March so plenty of time to further reduce. My last one was 5.9 and I want to be 5.5 but on less insulin.

I did 30 mins HipHopAbs aerobics yesterday and intend to do more today but other half has gone back to bed (his cough and cold are back) so I dont want to disturb him to get my exercise gear on. Oh sod that, I will sneak in grab my clothes and dress in the bathroom, there is only Saturday Kitchen on TV and that style of cooking just gets me shouting at the telly.

I do aslo do herbal teas & actualy like water so no issue with that… Also coconut water is very big in australia now & does have 15 calories per 100 ml ( yes we are mostly metric here for measurements now but we still hang onto calories & feet & inches & a few others) is 100- 200ml a day ok or ?

    Morning all
Today is the first day of the rest of my life! This time I am going to do it. Like a lot of you I have tried to shift the weight so many times before and failed. I have faith in MM and am inspired by all of you. So many helpful tips and hints. I was told by my previous GP (I have moved house since) that I am pre diabetic with a reading of 5.6……………… I suspect it was more to do with the fact that I am morbidly obese. I am too ashamed to write my weight on here, but have half of it to lose. I am especially encouraged by Mixnmatch and Captainlynne – thank you. I only hope I can find the willpower and determination to follow in your footsteps.

I am looking forward to being able to do anything without becoming breathless, for the pain in my knees and upper arms to go away and to walk more. I have acquired an exercise bike so have started building up the HIT exercise and when I have shed some weight, might be brave enough to get out on my real, but ancient mountain bike (owned some 15 years and ridden three times). I intend to weigh once a week. Any journey starts with the first step. Here goes. Thank you all and the very best of luck with your own adventures.

Welcome. The hunger should quieten down soon. A while ago I read about quitting something is hard as the brain keeps checking to make sure you are not doing what you are trying to avoid (hope that makes sense). Like stop biting nails, the brain checks you are not doing it which brings it back to mind again and again. I think that’s why advice to do something different to usual routine can work – instead of sitting, or watching tv, after a meal do something else to give your brain something to think about other than is it snack time – or I must be hungry I haven’t eaten for a bit. As Lindarina says a hot drink can work wonders, low cal if you are out of rations for the day, or my favourite – coffee with a tablespoon of double cream on top.

Hi. Well done on the loss so far. It will/should get easier within a few days of starting. If you have no particular health issues that you are hoping to resolve by doing this, then going higher in calories isn’t a problem, just that your loss will, probably, be slower than on 800.

However, you say “I realised low fat for breakfast and lunch was a killer”. If you are eating low fat go full fat. Yes, it’s more calories, which is where planning comes in, but you will feel fuller for longer and it’s what helps make this sustainable. Also are you drinking plenty of water, which will help fill you up. Sorry if I misunderstood but that statement did stand out for me.

The first few days I felt very hungry, especially in the evening. For me personally, the strong hunger went away around day three. It’s different for everyone so hang in there!

I find tea very helpful. Instead of snacking I make myself a hot cup of herbal or fruit tea with a couple of slices of lemon. My favorite is licorice and mint tea. It tastes almost like candy, and a big cup lasts a long time.

    Hi everyone,

    Nice to e-meet you.
I am a newbie too, a very experienced dieter again at my maximum weight. I should not really have gained this last 20 pounds, I do not know where it came from, so shedding it at the generally recommended pound-a-week speed really got me down.

I have started the diet last Wednesday, and already 3 kg (6 pounds) are gone, even though I am only on day 4. Incredible and inspiring!
As a veteran dieter, I know the first week is often spectacular, but I have never before experienced something like this.

Everybody I wish you the best of success on this journey.

    Hi CarbAddict

I totally agree with you on previously loved vegetables. Sweetcorn was a much loved vegetable and I haven’t eaten it since October. I have an allotment and grow beautiful sweetcorn which will be a problem to me in the summer as I love growing it and eating it fresh. SWeet potato is another favourite veg and thankfully I haven’t managed to master growing it. Vegetable such as broccoli, tomatoes cauliflower I agree have carbs but I have been happily eating them without portion control and still losing weight. I am sure I have been able to do this because of all the other carbs that have been dropped from my diet. All other foods I have quite happily given up….bread, potatoes. rice, biscuits, pasta, cakes etc etc. Having thought about it there must come a time when I will be able to reintroduce certain foods being mindful of portion size. In past years I would think nothing of eating a whole family size of cheese and onion crisps!!!๐Ÿ˜ฑBy myself!! Or a whole French baguette thinking that tearing off three inches at a time and eating it over an hour wasn’t increasing my weight. The way I eat has changed so much and I love the way it makes me feel. I am eating healthy real foods (non processed). After work I used to raid the cupboards for high carb snacks and think nothing of eating a large portion of cheese and biscuits for lunch. These days I pop one of my salmon or cod and vegetable parcels in the oven and 30 mins later I have a tasty lunch. The bonus being all those extra nutrients we are consuming in our meals๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

I plan every meal in advance. Saturday I made a mealplan and went grocery shopping. I haven’t always stuck to my plan, but it’s easier to tweek an already existing plan than it is to come up with something new every day.

  • DAY 5 …. WEEK 2

    Good morning/evening

Over halve way through week 2 now and quite a few of us seem to have settled back into BSD now that the silly season is over. For those who are still struggling just ‘keep on keeping on’ and it will all fall back into place. Just don’t give up. Look at how far you have come and not at a few days/weeks when you have been less than perfect. We are only human !

Sorry to hear you’re not well Natalie. Hope you’re better soon.

Well done Daisiesmum at almost getting to goal. No harm in planning maintenance now. I spent several weeks in ‘maintenance’ and I’m no where near goal!!! Guess it will be just taking one day at a time! As you say and exciting time.

All this talk of tea has got me excited to try some different types but for today I’m just going to try my green tea again to see if I can develop a taste for it.

Hope you all have a good day and a nice weekend.

  • Daisiesmum – well done. It’s great that you are already looking at how you will manage maintenance. I was so worried about it but have found it almost effortless because my tastes have completely changed and I picked up some really good strategies on how to manage maintenance from this forum. For me weighing and logging my food on fat secret and weighing myself every day keep me on track and I also enjoy doing it as it suits my personality.

January is proving very hectic – I have booked much too much work – one of the perils of working for yourself but I am still determined to keep up the extra walking I did in the Christmas vacation.

Have had lots more comments about the huge amount of weight I have lost over Christmas – but of course I haven’t and its just because I have ditched the baggy clothes and am now wearing the size 10s I bought in the sales. Thank goodness for the sales – they came at just the right time.

It looks like pale green noodles rather than spaghetti, it takes a little longer to cook and is not as soft as spaghetti to eat but is quite nice nonetheless. I assumed that because they are made from Edemame beans they would not be a carb source and therefore might be a substitute for wheat spaghetti. As they seem to be news to people I will hop on Google and see what I can find out.

1a. Be happy with under 900 cals; 60gms or under of carbs
1b. Be sure the casks & carbs are BSD friendly
    2. Be meticulous about fluid intake
    3. Get back to regular gym and walking. I know I feel so much better when I do but have been rather here or there lately
    4. Firstly back to 63kg; then 4x1kg

These were the mini goals I set on 27Dec. Since then I reached 62.9kg on 4Jan and 61.9kg today, Jan7. So, a couple of “scales” milestones passed. I was at 61.9 very briefly sometime in December, didn’t stay there or go below, as I became somewhat lost in the silly/busy season! I’m trying with the other behavioural goals…

Since Boxing Day I’ve had, still have, a nasty cold which became chest infection, horrible cough, antibiotics from a GP who is usually reluctant to issue them. Because of this, I’ve thought about not claiming the goals except that preBSD I would have eaten more (bread, choc, cake etc) for the energy, you understand ๐Ÿ˜ฃ. I fell into that trap once with a small piece of cake following one of the two funerals I needed to attend during this week. Saw what I was doing, heard the self-talk, was able to pull back….gave myself a pat on the back instead of the usual negative talk. So, in this positive frame of mind, I’m claiming the mini goals reached, will work towards the next 3x1kg to get me safely down into my mid-range BMI.

Stay well and on track everyone. ๐Ÿ’Ÿ

Talk to you soon Butterlover, well done on seeing the need for a reorganisation and tackling it.๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

  • Hello Peeps, all this loverly tea talk has got my tastebuds going! I am much more of a coffee drinker, I like my coffee strong and black and that fits in with BSD (I only have 2-3 cups of really good coffee per day). Unfortunately, I like black tea strong and sweet with a bit more than a “splash” of milk, and having given up sugar… once I’m on maintenance I’ll try unsweetened again as my tastebuds have changed significantly!

My weight is going in the right direction and I am currently exactly 1 kilo from my ultimate goal which I hope to reach by 17th Jan (Drs appointment). Using the Fatsecret app to track food and exercise has been great. I am managing to average around 800 cals per day whilst keeping net carbs around 30g and fat around 60g, my only slight concern is protein at 40g seems a bit low, but will address that in maintenance ๐Ÿ™‚

Get me, talking maintenance already! It’s both an exciting and nerve wracking prospect. I am not tempted by carbs but eating low carb high fat for life is going to be a whole new learning curve. Exciting!

    Happy BSD Saturday everyone!

    Hello!

So it’s day 4 for me today so I’m still quite new.

I’m finding it fairly easy to stick to 800 calories and I’m finding that I’m eating well and that my food is fairly varied; yesterday I had eggs and veg for breakfast, shirataki noodles and stir fry veg for dinner and chicken and white bean stew for tea. But I’m feeling so, so hungry. I mean I feel full when I’m eating; I’m eating slowly so I can tell that I’m full, and after my stew last night I felt really full – but maybe an hour and a half later I was starving and had to have a carrot.

Is this normal – does it go away? I’m thinking of adding in a little bit of overnight oats for breakfast. But with fewer oats and more yog and berries. Maybe I need to up the fat too?

Also shirataki noodles – where have they been all my life??๐Ÿ˜

PS: Miss Ziggy: I am going to answer your questions in reverse. I have the opposite issue in that I feel BSD is proving quite largely restrictive for me in terms of the fruit and veg I eat. Being mostly vegan I used to consume a lot of both. But since having started the BSD so many of the things I love have been knocked out (sweetcorn, melon, mango etc) and I’ve become slightly paranoid about the carb content of other fruits and vegetables that it puts me off eating them, which I don’t think is a good thing.

Broccoli, onions and tomatoes are a case in point: all are quite high in carbs given the quantities I like to eat them in. Yet they are all really good for you. As for fruit it’s almost all berries now and nothing else. I have one quarter cup a day and that’s it. No more fruit bowl in the kitchen.

Cutting down on the amount of sweetcorn and fruit compared to what I used to eat is no bad thing in many ways, but I definitely feel that I am not getting enough fruit and veg into my diet. To be fair I have not had any problems ‘downstairs’ as a result but I’m not getting my 5-8 portions a day for sure and mentally I miss them hugely.

As for lentils, I used to eat a lot of them too. And beans. Now not so much, because of the calories/carb content. I do appreciate that much of this has to do with my re-education on what a suitable portion size is however, and I do have to keep reminding myself that given I was five stone overweight at my worst with a relatively healthy diet, I must have been substantially overeating in volume. This is reinforced by the fact that I would often make a recipe supposed to feed four people and then eat it all thinking ‘how the hell would this stretch to feeding four people’. Growing up my mother fed us huge plates of food (and got upset if we did not eat them) so my idea of what constitutes ‘enough’ has been screwed up all my life. I have no problem knocking out things like cake and chocolate; it’s the tiny (in my eyes) portions that is my main adjustment. I am hoping over time I recalibrate my views as if not I’m going to feel shortchanged for the rest of my life ๐Ÿ™‚

Another 500g down – pretty surprising given I ate out twice yesterday and the cals/carbs were impossible to track. But I stuck hard to the BSD principles (barring the below mentioned dessert) and I went to places with tiny portion sizes. (Damn you French and Japanese restaurants normally but bless you on this occasion!!) Plus I had a weird fever overnight so suspect I have sweated a few cals off!

Had a nice NSV yesterday: the French place we went to is a seriously trendy dairy-free/ sugar-free beach-side cafe and my friend and I decided to treat ourselves (after our tiny, tiny meal) with a ‘chocolate pot’ which is a tiny portion of vegan rich chocolate gloop. Two teaspoons in I declared it was too sweet and passed it over to her. She was amazed. I was even more amazed. Normally I love those things. She normally has two even. It’s the first time since I started BSD that something I used to love has become unpalatable. I read about this happening to other people but it has taken more than three months for me to experience it. A sign of changing tastes I hope!

Exactly one kg to go before I am down to my lowest BSD weight. This is my focus now.

Have a good day everyone. Sarah x

I also got all the outside Christmas decorations down; now they are inside in my front hallway. Tomorrow, I plan to put them away in the garage.

PIT: The day went by too fast again. Two more days before I’m back to work! :–( I I feel guilty for complaining because I know so many people don’t have as much of a break from work as I do, but I still love it when I don’t have to go to work. Tomorrow is Saturday so I plan to get a huge batch of chicken vegetable soup and beef vegetable soup made from the coming weeks of work. I ordered a ton of 1 cup containers from Amazon (they arrived today) to make individual portions with and I’ll freeze most of it. Soup will be my planned lunch for the next 8 weeks or so.

  • I’ve been to a tea-tasting in China. Some varieties were nice but the weight loss one seemed to be made from manure-soaked straw… maybe that’s why it destroys appetite! I was recently given “longevity tea” by Chinese friends and I haven’t tried it yet. I’d completely forgotten that was why I wanted a loose-leaf strainer in the first place!

I’m sick today, very upset tummy, headache etc. Flu has been going around the family. At least I’m not eating much today.

Hi All. My original mini goals need to be adjusted as I’m really not doing my goal activities.I have not exercised for 3 days ,my fasting sugar is 6.9 and my weight is static.I’m full of good intentions with no action. Yesterday. I had a massive procrastination day and sat on the couch watching old movies when I have heaps of things that need doing. l ate a lot, it was all BSD friendly but 3 fistfuls of cashews is not a snack. My latest craze is boconccini and tomatoes with olive oil and morocon spice its more like a meal not a snack.Total calories for the day was over 1000, so I stopped counting.
Today I’m feeling more determined, canceled breakfast walked 45minutes or rather strolled as it was only 5000 steps.now drinking green tea and waiting till at least 1230 to eat lunch.Eggs with bacon and spinach. dinner will be chipolata sausages and salad. new goal. Write down 3 activities to get done every night before bed and prepare a lunch box as if I’m going to work.continue with exercise.
I also discovered that when I get the munchies ,I can post pone eating by brushing my teeth ,Brushed twice so far and its not even lunchtime.I’m really hoping that I will do better when I’m back to work as I will be moving all day.those of you who are doing well , I really admire you as I find it really hard to stay under 800 and to put two successful days together.I keep reading all the posts and Im not giving up,I have thought about changing to 5.2 but the issues would most likely be the same.

What you’re experiencing is normal. The need to eat something (anything) left me after around 6 days. After that, 800 cal a day was fine as long as I was busy.

The carb cravings took 3-4 weeks to stop, this involved me thinking/fantasising about poor choice foods when on the hungry side. Occasionally the cravings visit me to say hello even now, but they’re only fleeting.

Being prepared for your next meal and planning are ways to help you stay on track.

Well done Rebecca! That really is an accomplishment, and one you can hang your hat on.
I am really proud of myself for setting goals and sticking to them as well. I told myself I would walk the dogs every day, and I have done that. I have managed to stick to the 800 per day, and have the fridge full of great things. 2 people from work are doing this with me, so I am surrounded by support. I was not pre-diabetic, but my brother is diabetic (and I had weight to lose – 20kgs of it) so I started this with him in mind (if I can do it he can achieve as well) but also because I was just not happy with that weight creep and the possibility of becoming pre diabetic myself…
Anyhow – weigh in day is tomorrow, but I have been weighing myself each day (coz I am like that) and so far??? 4.2 kgs down. Not a typo.
    VERY HAPPY!!!!!
    Over and out

  • I think our current obesity epidemic demonstrates that the food, particularly processed meals, cakes and biscuits, produced by the big food companies is a problem for most people. As in the bad old days of tobacco firms selling cigarettes when they knew they were bad for us, the food companies surely cannot imagine the refined sugar and flour, accompanied by trans fats/hydrogenated fats are anything other than unhealthy. A specific allergy is an entirely different issue. Not a question of live and let live really, that makes them seem harmless.

I’ve been reading comments about people who have been finding it relatively easy, so I wondered if anyone else was finding it a bit of a struggle?

It hasn’t been toooo bad. I’ve coped better at work than I imagined. But generally it has felt quite hard. When did people find it becomes easier?

I’m on day 5 and have been sticking to 800 calories pretty strictly (I’ve been counting everything on myfitnesspal). Apart from yesterday where I caved and had some carbs and sugar (I realised low fat for breakfast and lunch was a killer) so went to 1100 calories. Yet I have lost about 1.5 kilos already and feel smaller too which is great! (Although again, probably not as drastic as some).

BUT it does feel unsustainably hard at the moment. Shall I just white knuckle it to my goal weight? Wait until week 2 to see if it gets any easier? Bail already and switch to 5:2 or up the calories?
