Heard something the other day – can’t remember where! It was said that we can eat anything for breakfast, not just ‘traditional’ breakfast foods. Could be leftovers, anything. For us, low-carb of course 😊

    To Hashimoto:
I’ve just finished the third week, 14.5 lbs so far, and delighted with the results and the programme so far. I’m finding exactly the same thing. I feel it’s my body/metabolism noticing what’s going on and saying “feed me” so I’ve decided to make today a brunch and supper day, and cook something slightly off piste tonight, with a carb additon (Spelt pasta) and a healthy desert, without wheat or sugar, with a small glass of wine, and see if that shuts it up! Then resume the 800 cal programme tomorrow.
I’ll let you know how it goes!

Good luck ladies…..breakfast is easy if you eat eggs…..hard boiled, scrambled or as a an omelette with mushrooms and tomatoes.
Full fat Greek yogurt with a few seeds and some frozen berries is also great and the fat keeps you full
All the best…it’s easier than you think!

    Hi Pixie
I take my lunch to work everyday….sometimes I do the easy recipes in the book such as the lettuce cup…just take the filling in a plastic box and the lettuce in a sandwich bag. The no fuss lunches such as the medi platter also work. Or I make up my own with some mackerel, chicken or sardines in a plastic box with chopped tomatoes, spinach, lettuce, cucumber, peppers etc and take the dressing in one of those little tiny jam pots or a small mustard pot to add when I want to eat. It’s not too hard if you plan it out. I’ve forgotten a couple of times but it’s easy to get hold of a salad or some hummus and crudités at any shop.
    Best of luck with it!

thanks for this , in answer to your questions..

    Probably pre-diabetic
    No blood sugar tester
one of those thin on the outside and fat on the inside people
    trouser size 32[ish] waist 35[ish]

So aim is to get waist to match trouser size ! not fussed if it takes longer than 8 weeks.

Thanks for recipe , intend trying the Hairy bikers leek lasagna preferably with Quorn for some meals.

I’m also vegetarian so need to watch my protein intake too.

What does the above mean ?

It shouldn’t hinder you at all as long as you count the calories in what you are using. There are no ‘magic’ foods on this diet, just the need to get nutrients from the three food groups of protein, low-carbs (fruit/veg) and fats. Your ground nut oil will help with your healthy fats and provide you with other nutrients not found in olive oil.

I want to loose 6 stone and reassess then, as my starting weight is 22st 10lbs. 1st weeks weight lose was 14lbs or one stone. Really pleased. Didn’t check any other measurements before starting but I got a diabetic to check my levels after dinner and I was 5.4 which understand is fine. Will update on week 2.

Hi hashimoto. Well done on your progress so far. I haven’t been hungry too much since ditching carbs, if I do get a little hungry I find that a drink, either hot or cold helps. Sometimes we think we’re hungry but we are actually thirsty.

I’m just preparing my recipe for dinner tonight – I’ve gone for the aubergine bake from this website as it looks tasty and filling but easy to make. And I have made a bit of a discovery – something I should have known all along really but it just never sunk in before. All the ingredients add up to 230 calories, the largest value being the mozzarella cheese (I have gone for half fat as full fat cheese doesn’t agree with me). Then I added in the 1 tablespoon of olive oil – just 1 – and that alone is 123 calories. OMG! Its the smallest quantity of the recipe yet the biggest in calories.

I know that olive oil is good for me and I need to re-educate myself about fats (all my life low fat has been the law) but that has really blown me away. It has made me realise that I can’t splash a bit of olive oil about and not count it as part of my 800, thinking a little bit won’t count much. Well, a little bit is an eighth of my allowance!

I will keep on using it as I find it makes plain vegetables more palatable but I will have to count it better in future!

You can use plates instead of boards…or bowls with some water in for weight.

I think you only need to get the water out if you are going to deep fry the tofu…if you are using it in soup or a strir fry, it doesn’t matter so much. Silken tofu is the easiest type to manage, very soft…I just cut it into pieces and pour some soy sauce on it, sometimes with some grated fresh ginger in it.

You can search online for tofu recipes…sure you’ll find something you want to try.

I have managed to get to the grand old age of 42 and have managed to successfully avoid tofu all that time. But today I was brave and bought it. But looking at the instructions, it says I have to put it between two chopping boards for at least ten minutes to get the liquid out. I see two problems with this, 1) I don’t own two chopping boards and 2) I really don’t think I can be ar**ed.

I would like to know what other people do with their tofu to make it liquid free or otherwise just edible. What am I dealing with here?

    Thanks in advance!

Me and the OT have been at it 6 days now, she weighed herself yesterday and had lost 5 pounds, and we’re enjoying the food.
    Good luck on your journey.
As a paramedic I’d say keep a really good eye on your Bm readings, and maybe see your Gp for advice about the metformin sooner rather than later.

    Hi Paul,
There is a fair bit of discussion about how many carbs on several of the other threads. I’m sorry I can’t remember which ones but one might be Bill1954’s one called this has to work for me.
You haven’t said whether you are diabetic cos that would make a difference. If you are testing blood sugars you would have some idea of how carb sensitive you are by testing two hours after a carb heavy meal. I’ve lowered my carb intake by trial and error and found I have to keep them quite low. However I don’t have to lose weight so I’m eating a higher calorie count than 800, according to my activity level.
I’m also vegetarian so need to watch my protein intake too. There are a few vegos on here and everyone will help you out with advice. A nice high protein, low carb dinner is a vegetarian lasagne. I replace the lasagne layer with a large zucchini( courgette) sliced lengthways. Alternating a layers of a tomato/mushroom/capsicum/eggplant mix with one of frozen spinach, Parmesan and cottage cheese ( or ricotta) mix separated by the zucchini. The zucchini has a similar texture to pasta when cooked this way. Top with grated cheese and it’s delicious.
A bit of a long winded answer but hope it helps.

    Starting point this morning: Weight 11st 2lb, Waist 38 1/2 “, Blood Sugar 8.8
Have had my first shake – Strawberry made with 100 ml of Semi-skimmed milk and 150ml of water. Tasted alright. Might make it more watery as I go on. Had 1 metformin afterwards – not sure how that is going to work, but intend to keep taking them this week and start reducing next week as weight starts coming off.

Hi to everyone. I have just finished reading the BSD book. I am starting the diet tomorrow. It tells me in the book if I wish to work out my BMI to login to this site and it will do it for me. Can anyone tell me where ? I may be missing something but can’t seem to locate it. Thanks

Having heard Michael on the Jeremy Vine show, I was inspired to buy the book and make the decision to get serious about getting my weight under control. It has always been a bit of a battle for me, but since menopause it has been a huge problem, both because I know the extra weight is unhealthy and because I don’t like the way I look anymore.

So the journey begins tomorrow, I have taken sometime to plan, read the book, purchased the blood sugar tester and have shopped for foods to fit the diet. Now I just need to weigh, measure and blood test tomorrow morning and get myself started on the road to a healthier weight and greater fitness. I confess, exercise is a problem for me, as I find motivation in that area a big problem, but I’m planning to start small (even if its just walking up and down stairs a few extra times a day at home) and hopefully build.

I plan to use the forum for inspiration and hope that someone out there, will be willing to offer some encouragement along the way.

HI PVDU, Thanks, that’s useful. I tend not to follow recipes – or eat much more than 1 portion! 🙂 soprefer to use MyFitnessPal etc to count what I’m eating.
Although my GP is good, in questions of nutrition I suspect he and even the dietitian I go to sometimes, are out of date about these fairly recent developments. GP once gave me the old info, 1lb per week at most and just cut down on everything.
What causes kidney stones is not always clear anyway and the best thing you can do is drink loads of water. But there is some research that might indicate, in some circumstances, low carb MIGHT increase the risk. As for gall stones, low fat is seen as best way to avoid attacks – mine are pretty silent.
We saw on one of the BBC programmes recently that individuals react differently to different foods so it’s hard to really know I think. x

Interesting. I wonder whether this has been considered and the meal plans have been carefully constructed to provide the minimum carbs through vegetables etc, so ketobreath is reduced, or even, eliminated altogether.

I know this has been a big problem on Atkins.

Had no idea it came from the lungs!

I find this keeps me going. Also I get around the food tasting by using a teaspoon and just dipping it not as I normally did with a bigger spoon and scoop lol I also get others to taste instead of me.

I kept the Daily Mail recipes of Michael’s blood sugar diet and the minted pea hummus says ‘serve with your choice of crudites’. I would just count the calories of the crudites you choose and add to the total he gives for the various hummus in the book as they do vary in calorific values. Cucumber, celery and peppers are very low in calories.
Also, I freeze portions of hummus so I don’t have to eat it 3 days on the trot – it works just fine!!! I know how you feel as I am doing this as a single person and I find it takes a lot of energy to make three decent (small) meals a day just for one person.
Let’s keep on as this diet is doing wonders for me – my father told me I need to buy new jeans as they are now very baggy on me after just one month!
    All the best

    Hi guys.
Still feeling good, the OT weighed herself yesterday and was grinning because shed lost 5lbs in that many days. I’m waiting till Monday, so I don’t become obsessed with 1/2 lbs fluctuations over the week.
Was a bit naughty last night, had dinner over at the APS who were really supportive. (Salad & chicken with more salad) however as is normal in our family the red wine flowed while we were chatting. I was much better than I would have been if I hadn’t been dieting, but I was at about 1100kc for the day.
    However today’s another day.
So poached eggs on asparagus is going to be my brunch when I eventually stir myself from the pit. (Though it was my turn to get the Chooks up and feed the cats who were shouting! )
