Darwinbabe, do you really think with the vast amount of dieting experience we have on this website, that we don’t know dieting can make a person irritable? But its no excise for your horrible posts. I get the feeling you are enjoying being vile but I, for one, am taking no pleasure in reading yours.

Don’t worry, Linda, we’ve all been there – it can happen because your body is trying to readjust to the new regime and it will try to fight back! Taming the “carb monster” (nice description, Bill1954) is probably a bit like training a horse – when you’ve been unseated, you have to saddle up and get back on track. And it may happen again but you’ll be able to deal with it.
This weekend the wheels came off my wagon – a stressful Friday (self-inflicted, I left my car lights on overnight leading to a flat battery), and then a very busy Saturday. I felt quite woozy for a while on Saturday morning – whether my BP went up due to being stressed or it went down to having lost some weight I don’t know (trip to the surgery lined up for tomorrow morning to get my BP checked). But I devoured a whole big bag of salt & vinegar crisps, and a chocolate caramel egg – and I enjoyed them. But today I don’t feel the need anymore. For lunch I’m going to make myself a soup using some of veggies that need using up and go for a long walk afterwards.
Take care & keep it up.

Just starting week 8 and 34lbs down. Going to give a big push and see if I can crack 40lbs. (I do have an awful lot to lose) If I don’t I won’t be disappointed because this lifestyle “diet” is the best thing ever. Will probably keep on 800 for a few weeks then go on a modified 5:2. Keep the chip butties and choc away from me, my previous diet.

I have used both Quinoa and Barley. Cauli rice is available commercially in the UK, not sure about elsewhere, but you can just finely chop fresh cauli with a knife.
The increase in full fat intake is a necessity. It encourages your body into fat burning mode or ketosis and keeps you feeling full as it takes longet to digest, I can vouch that it works.
The simple fact is, if you keep your carbs down to 50g, especially complex carbs, and stick to 800 calories, you have to lose weight.

  • Feeling very despondent today I haven’t lost any weight over the weekend, still done the diet strictly except on Sunday had an apple before going to church, (can’t get through to 1pm without something to eat) also having terrible hunger problems, again I am sticking strictly to the diet, after mass yesterday they had the big brew with fairtrade, croissants and toast with fairtraid preserves, it was awful seeing everyone enjoying breakfast. I still kept to my diet though, I know the one thing I need to do and that is excercise more! I hate excercise so need to walk to the village and back for shopping! Sorry for the grumpy post just wanted to sound off!

    Hi Munchkinsnan
There doesn’t seem to be a shopping list as such.
When I started out I made a list of the best vegetables to eat, meat and poultry are no problem.
Then I had a look through the recipe section and just made a list from the ingredients.
I will say that if you want bread alternatives, make sure you buy coconut flour and chickpea flour (also known as gram or besan flour)
    Best of luck

    Cazzowary,
The problem I have is that I not only did not lose weight I actually gained 1 kilo in just a week.
I am sticking to the 800 calories. Some days are substantially under.
I am seeking advice as to how I can achieve similar success to the other forum members.
Penny suggested monitoring the carbohydrate intake. It is good supportive advice and I noticed that today I exceeded the 50g. I have also read here that some forum members have increased their full fat intake. That seems drastic.
Another possibility is to try some different meal plans and recipes.
I need something to swap with rice, which I usually eat a few times a week. Do you think quinoa would be a suitable substitute? Is barley OK? What about glass noodles? Freekah? Cauliflower rice is not possible because I do not own the kitchen equipment to make it.

Darwinbabe, you are the very first poster on this forum to make such a personal attack on someone. Very disappointing!
Penny was trying to help. We all ask questions to try and get to the heart of the issue so that we can give the best advice.
Given your forum name and the $ sign in your post it was a reasonable assumption to make. People in other parts of the world might not understand the challenges of getting the more cold climate vegetables or the difference in cost and availability, for those living in the Top End!! So it was quite reasonable to suggest another Aussie might be able to help.
It wouldn’t have been for cyberstalking or any ill intent. It’s a pity you didn’t take her response in the spirit it was intended.

    Hi GwendfolineAnne
You will lose weight on this way of eating, you have to.
I too have quite a bit to lose like others so we are in for the long term.
Whether or not you keep it off or for how long will depend on how wel you adapt to the Med plan after 8 weeks
Best of luck, I’ll watch out for your first weigh in post.

DarwinBabe- if you want to substitute something in a recipe, try to make it like for like. Lentils are not a substitute for cauliflower because they much higher in calories. At the end of the day if you stick to 800 calories you should lose weight, and if you do go up, consider water weight.

I also think you are out of line in the way you’ve addressed Penny- we’re pretty friendly and caring in the forum and what you’ve said were neither. Penny’s question was perfectly legitimate given your user name so if you don’t want to risk your anonymity I’d suggest choosing a more anonymous user name. Anyway, good luck.

I eat plenty of veg and have flax seed etc. they don’t really help. but the herb tea certainly does!

It’s ok for me as I work from home but don’t recommend taking it the night before you have to get a busdrive anywhere 😉

Darwin and, having anonymity does not give you the right to abuse other members. If you continue to post offensive messages I will speak to the administrators of this site and have them look at your posts with a view to removing them – and you – from this forum. If you cannot offer words of support to fellow members, you shouldn’t be here.

  • I am sorry I misinterpreted your question.
You are absolutely correct that those things are not on the site. Possibly the MRI has some sort of ownership issue attached to it???? And the calorie tracker has definitely never been added. A few other people have asked about that. Maybe it was a bit expensive or beyond the skills of the website designer. Mistakes sometimes happen for other reasons too. Fitbit are advertisers on this site so that could be a factor. Probably a better editor might remove the mention of these things from future editions of the book.

Starting Week 5 today and have lost 2lbs so pleased with that especially as I have had to curtail the exercising as I have done something to my knee! Have lost a stone altogether now which was my target for half way! BS reading this morning was 5.2. Next few weeks are going to be challenging as I am away a lot but I feel that I have the mindset now to keep going – I certainly haven’t found it hard and I know that keeping to low-carb is going to be a way of life from now on anyway. Love hearing about the successes of everyone else – keep it up!

  • Hi,

Here is the MRI of Michael – under the tab Blood Sugar Diet/Michael’s Story:
    https://thebloodsugardiet.com/michaels-story/

I also wish there was a way of contacting admin.
I’m so confused about the supposed ratio of carbs/protein/fat. The term ‘low-carb’ is so vague. The presumption of followers on this site of being under 50g carbs to go into ketosis doesn’t seem to be officially mentioned on this site or in the book. (Although this seems to be working for folks). I’ve inputted some of the daily menus from the book into MFP and the carbs vary from 45g to 80g.
The only definite figure I can find in the book is the standard recommendation of 45g protein for women and 55g protein for men per day. (If I’ve missed something, please let me know!)
So, based on that, I’m trying for 50g carbs, 45g protein and the rest fat. I’m using MyFitnessPal to track.

Hi everyone, just joined the website / forum today having started reducing my carbs nine days ago. Really encouraged by what I have read here. The shock for me was actually measuring my waist 10 days ago, the tape measure doesn’t lie – and as I don’t have access to scales (travelling for a few months), the tape measure is my only measure. However, I am so pleased and encouraged as within a week, my waist had reduced by a whole two inches. I have found the ‘dieting’ hard going as all my life my diet has been carb heavy and going almost cold turkey with no carbs has been tough, but the results speak for themselves. Afternoons seem to be the hardest so I make sure I have an apple and almonds on hand. My next challenge is maintaining the will power – just off to Thailand for a month so avoiding rice and noodles will be tricky. Will let you know how it goes.

  • Hi Teztyu
no one guarantees anything but I will say this.
Stick to the plan and you will lose weight and your sugar readings will decrease. can’t give a time scale as my sugar readings have had a strange 10 days or so but still losing weight.
This time next week we’ll be celebrating the fact that there’s less of you to go round

  • Hello again Bill thanks for the tip I was assuming that my shake made with skimmed milk which is supposedly about 216 calories would be about the same with whole milk but clearly the whole milk will have more calories do you think i should water it down or just calculate my daily allowance using all milk with my shake ?

  • Hello to the forum, not sure how to start a post from scratch so i will start here , today is the first day of my 8 week blood sugar diet though I have been supplementing some of my meals with shakes for the past 3 weeks during which time i have lost approximately 7 lbs , starting weight 15 St 10 lbs . today i am starting with the intention of doing 8 weeks with no alcohol though I don`t drink a lot anyway , I am going to be following the guide lines as set out by professor Taylor from Newcastle university which also means no meat or fish or dairy products for the duration of the 8 weeks . My main aim after being told by my diabetes nurse that i am now on the maximum dose of metformin and have been prescribed yet another drug is to try and lose enough fat from around my waist so as to hopefully enable my pancreas to once again produce enough insulin so that i can do away with medication , I know this may be a bit optimistic but at worse I will at least lose some weight and feel a bit better within myself.
Like many diabetics I was a little surprised when i was originally diagnosed as I considered myself to be reasonably fit and healthy at the time playing football going to the gym and doing karate twice a week I didn’t consider myself to be particularly overweight , but in hind sight I obviously must have been .
one of the things that has surprised me is how readily my doctor was to write me off and put me straight on medication , this was approx five years ago and it is only now that I have stumbled across the book for the 8 week blood sugar diet that i have realised that I may be able to do something about it .I did in fact mention the low calorie eight week program as laid out by prof Taylor to my nurse about 1 yr ago but she simply told me i wouldn’t do 800 calories a day for 8 weeks , i now hope to prove her wrong and see how my efforts pay off , so wish me luck and i will try and keep you posted of my progress over the next 8 weeks. Terry.

  • Thank you!
I do have access to BMI calculations and know well what mine is…

In the book it is clearly stated that these things are supposed to be on this site and I am wondering why are they not here? or am I misreading…?

Also it mentions there is an anonymous way to track one’s progress with the blood glucose diet on this site and I can’t see where that is here either. How does one track one’s progress here?

I don’t intend to be contentious, just am tying up loose ends in my own mind from the book. I’m an ex editor…these sorts of things distract me.

I am tracking my progress at another site that allows input of weight and measurements…the 5:2 diet site, since I am unable to find a way to do it here…

I do not see either a way here to contact an admin person so that I could have raised this less publicly off the forum, hence the thread.

I am starting out today and looking forward to the coming week. I am a bit sceptical as to how much weight I might lose, after reading some of the fantastic losses that people have made. I did a very similar way of eating in 2014 and lost 2 stones, but unfortunately put it all back on in 2015. 🙁 Altogether I need to lose 5 Stones, so I have a very long journey in front of me.

End of first week, a few ups and downs, a bit more grumpier on day 3 and 6! Weekends too are harder as family just help them selves to food and I can’t! Weight loss 2.5kgs and 1.5 inches off of my waist. So very happy with that and has kept me more focused for the next few weeks. I have found mornings to late afternoons are fine but then all goes slightly down hill, hunger maybe or just slight boredom as I can’t just go and help myself to a piece of fruit or chocolate! Have found I’m thinking am I hungry rather a lot, need to keep busier I think as I constantly feel my stomach has an empty sucking in feeling, good I suppose! Trying to plan more this week and getting into a better routine, found I had too many calories for lunch a couple of days last week and only left 200 calories for evening meal, I stuffed several flat mushrooms with a piece of cod and pesto and Parmesan, so low in calories and with a salad was very filling. New best friends are flat mushrooms. Using grated Parmesan and crumbled feta a lot as a little goes a long way. Trouble is with high fat they are high calories too, but getting there and sometimes a tsp is all you need of fat. Kept under 40gms of carbs every day, watching carbs and sugars and monitoring both. Feeling saintly and thanks to all the wonderful motivated posts on here, good luck everyone for coming week. 😀

Hey Linda, you had a good few days and then the carb monster started fighting back.
Carbs, especially sugar are addictive and chocolate contains chemicals that make you feel good.
It sounds like the weekend has fallen as you were going through carb withdrawal, others report flu like symptoms, headaches etc.
So you fell off the horse this weekend.
Put it behind you, get back on, and enjoy the ride.

Hey Linda53 – I also had my bad moments. Lindor eggs, coffee cake, you name it, I’ve eaten it. But 8 weeks later I am over 10kg down. So stick in there and get right back on the wagon. If I can do it, anyone can. I have been overweight for years and years, and tried everything. Weight loss previously has been so slow that I have always ended up losing motivation. Even with bad days on this way of eating, I have successfully lost. Two bad days in 7 is still a high percentage of good days. And plenty enough to lose weight. And who is to say other weeks will be the same? You’ll get better at this, and you can do it. Just keep checking these forums.

I know I should walk, but I have to walk with a purpose. I feel stupid, just walking. Today I have a lot of stuff planned in and around the house to increase my steps and activity. Including washing the duvet cover etc and putting on line, putting the clean duvet on (a work out in itself). Chopping vegetables for my tea and cooking, involves walking backwards and forwards getting ingredients, bending and stretching for cupboard items and walking to check the oven. I might bake some bread today or tomorrow kneading is good exercise (not for me of course – I mean the bread not the exercise!)😃

Day 23 weight 10st 8lbs (back to my least, not going to be complacent again)
    Blood sugar 10.4

I obviously need to lose a lot more weight to sort my blood sugar.
