Thanks Judith, Janet and Bill πŸ˜ƒ

Christine – glad to help. It just happened to catch my attention – I love New Orleans. Never knew I liked jazz until I was taken to Preservation Hall in the French Quarter. That was before Katrina. My friends wouldn’t let me leave the hotel on my own! They didn’t realise some of the areas I’ve lived/worked in here😊

Usually lot of holidays ‘leaf peeping’ in New England, but firstly time I’d seen the cruise I’ve told you about. Hope you find something you like😊

    Day 69 weight 10st 2lbs
Blood sugar – I took 4 readings within minutes of each other – results as follows:
    Element machine 15.0, 10.9, 11.3
    Accucheck avviva 8.8

It was the first reading that made me suspicious. I don’t feel confident with my machine any more. Am going to get the Manuel out and try to check the calibration again over the weekend.

    Hi Lynne,
Thank you for that info, about the cruises etc, will have a look on line later,
I look forward to being able to do that, go away and come back to the same weight! Well done,
I will be on the twelve week and over on Monday, I am hoping to hit the 2 stone loss by then, that’s only a two and a half pounds to go! I am being very good at the moment, after a few weeks of not losing its good to see the dial on my scales go down.
Are you at the weight you want to be or are you looking to lose any more?

Also, check out our thread called ‘what have you eaten today’, there are loads of recipe ideas on there. Quite a lot of people do use my fitness pal but I’m not one of them, I prefer to keep an old fashioned handwritten diary. It can be really useful to record everything especially in the beginning. It can help you get – and keep – your head in the right place. It can help you be mindful of everything you are eating – and what you don’t need to eat and also, its a record of what has gone right and gone wrong for you. Great fun to look back on after a few weeks!

    Hi Judith,
I managed to get the flour from tesco so thank you.
I am so sorry you are suffering, I also have diverticulitis, and my experience is the treatment is worse than the cause, so I hope you get get better without the treatment! I sometimes have a bad bout but can manage to recover by watching what I eat, not easy, I also ( when I was eating carbs) avoided gluten if I could I’m sure it doesn’t help with our condition.
I have loads of gluten free flours etc, so I don’t know what I will do with the them now!
    Take care Judith.

    Hi Chocolate_ee
Welcome. Read & mark the BSD for salient points for you. I kept a daily food diary ( paper). I’m 12 weeks in & Type 2 Diabetic. 1 &1/2 stones lost but more to go.
The book only tells you protein advice, 45g women & 55g men daily. By consensus we have between 50 – 100g carbs daily. T 2 need to keep low to stop sugar spikes, we are trying to reverse diabetes.
Keep your fat intake up if you go that low with carbs. Very important to drink 2 – 3 litres fluid daily. You must do some reading to understand what & how to do on this diet. It’s good but you need to persevere & we will help with info.
Go to : Forum Fast 800, Topic Percentages ( Vicfish 37) page 8 dated17.2.16. Read my & others posts
    Also : Fast 800, Topic Answers & info – how & why page 3 dated 11.4.16.
Look on line for low carb recipes & the fast diet recipe book & on here of course. I cook from scratch but did 5:2 so don’t count or weigh as I did all that & know what I’m doing. Maybe you should count calories & weigh until you are happy
Hope this helps you good luck

Just starting this diet and I’ve been on My Fitness Pal and I’ve been looking up foods and their calorie and carb values under their database by brand. Wow – what an eye-opener !

I hadn’t realised how ingrained my food habits had become. For lunch I may have eaten one of those Philadelphia mini pots of extra light cream cheese with a couple of crisp breads but now I see how mad the carb and sugar values are I realise why my weight has ballooned !

Can I ask how many carbs I should be aiming for a day – I’ve heard figures like 50g per day mentioned but maybe I should just aim to keep it low rather than worry about the maths ?! And should I be looking at the Total carb value and not the ‘of which x is sugars” figure ?

I didn’t want to get too obsessed with food recording and calorie counting but now I realise I’m probably going to have to .

I suppose following the recipes in the book will do the calculating for you but some of these I’d like to swap out if I’m not too keen on the ingredients.

Can anyone recommend any other good recipe books which will give the info we need ? I tend to cook most meals from scratch using mostly fresh ingredients so I’m looking forward to being creative with my own dishes – I’m just going to have to be more careful than I thought perhaps. I reckon my portion control needs keeping in check too !

Do you all log your food every day and if so do you find My Fitness Pal a good bet ?

    Sorry – so many questions!

    Hi keepsmiling
I’ve had Turkish slipper toes for 16 years, but not for the past 12 weeks! And legs are good too. I’m Type 2 Diabetic but had this long before diagnosed. Mum (T 2,) & gma & ggma as well ? Why.
We are much more hydrated now & I think maybe we were losing too many electrolytes before? Who knows? Clearly NOT GPs!! Still enjoy my tonic water daily though. Took it for the quinine content. Helps cramps.
    Keep on … Smiling

Has anyone else noticed that leg cramps have ceased since starting the BSD? I used to get quite frequent leg and foot cramps at night, but have just realised that I haven’t had them since I went low carb a month ago. Coincidence? Or is there some causation factor? I’d love to know. Whatever, I’m a happy and better rested bunny!

Hi keepsmiling! I’m glad cherrieanne and I are not alone!

It took me 2 years to mention it to my GP because I thought I would get the perplexed look as it sounds so odd.
My dr just smiled when I described my toes as doing a Vulcan salute but explained when certain muscles in the inside of the foot cramp it feeds up to the toes. He also said a Vulcan salute is a very good way of describing it.

I’m glad the diet is working for you πŸ™‚

Janet when I finally found out that gluten was causing me problems I researched the link with hypothyroidism and it is quite common to develop ceoliac or intolerance. I only wish I had known that a decade ago!

The nausea will be your reaction to the gluten. I’m the same at the moment. In fact I’m wondering just how GF that brownie was. Sorry to tell you this but I have found the symptoms can rumble on for 2 or 3 weeks – fortunately getting less bad as time goes by.

It won’t stop me going to Oz because if it stays like this over the weekend I will go to drs and be put on antibiotics but it has laid me up today. I’m still in pjs:(

    Hi Hashimoto and Cherrianne

I thought I was the only one with the ‘rising toe’ issue – any time I’ve mentioned it to a medic, they just look perplexed! Usually it’s my big toe which does the ‘salute’, then my foot twists inwards, then I get pains over the top of my foot. Nice! And a tricky one to straighten out – whether to go for the upwards toe or the inwards foot first? It’s stopped since I’ve started this diet, though – in fact, so have my leg cramps. Don’t know why that should be, but a great side benefit.

Apart from not wanting these horrible symptoms on a more long term basis, I don’t want to put the weight back on that I have lost. Even if they can confirm intolerance or ceoliacs, the advice will be to follow a gf diet so I think I might as well just carry on with that now I have been eating that way for nearly three months. The nurse is testing again for vitamin b12 deficiency and my thyroid seems to be under control, both of those can increase your chances of being ceoliac too apparently. So I think I should just be as gf as possible and should hopefully feek better for that. This week I have felt nauseous every afternoon for no apparent reason. I hope your symptoms don’t get in the way of your planning for Australia.

My GP wanted to do a ceoliac test and asked me to eat plenty of gluten rich food for 2 weeks before the test. I managed 2 slices of bread in 2 weeks because I couldn’t cope with the gut problems. So test came back as gluten intolerant. I do think I am probably ceoliac. It is easier to go gluten free, Janet, than put yourself through 6 weeks of eating gluten daily. I’m sure my diverticulitis was caused by eating gluten for years without realising what was causing me all the gut problems. Interestingly the gut problems weren’t as severe when I was on oral steroids for asthma – as the steroids reduce inflammation I guess they were reducing intestinal inflammation caused by gluten.

I would say if you are not ceoliac you are definitely gluten intolerant. The former the more likely.

I was just saying to my friend yesterday it makes you wonder how many people are going through life with carb problems because we are so used to the discomfort it becomes ‘normal’.

Thank goodness we found this diet!

    Hi Tofa,
I log everything I eat, so I include the carbs in my milk, yoghurt, fruit, nuts, veg, pulses etc. I count everything lol. I was so determined to conquer the diabetes.
I try to plan my day’s meals in the morning so I can even out the carbs through the day and make sure I get enough protein and fat.
There is a thread called rising fasting blood sugars where a few of us brainstormed the erratic blood sugar issue. If it happens to you, then it’s worth a read as some good info on there.
I’m not really sure about apps in the UK but I’ve seen people on here mention myfitnesspal, which seems popular, and calorieking.
