  • Hello, I am starting the diet today, I am lucky that my husband is doing it too. I have type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. I am determined to do something about it. I have all sorts of anxieties about keeping to the plan but the fridge and cupboards are clear.
    Please wish luck.

I started 2 weeks ago, and have dropped from 77 kilos to 74 kilos Fasting sugar measurement this morning 64.
Am now resting doing a 5:2! Am looking quite thin! (5ft 8ins 11.6 stone in English!)
I have in mind 70 kilos but am not getting encouragement from a family of medics!
I have felt weak and a bit distant especially on my mountain bike adventures…typically 25 kilometres 200 ft of climbing, so usually stick to 10,000 step walks.
Tend to stick to same breakfast Bircher, and Cheesy Beans lunchtime. Mix it up for Dinner!
I think that I will get back on it ‘properly’ when the weather improves.
I am encouraged but need the sun on my back for the next bit! Not felt hungry on this but could do with a Glass of wine!

I’ve been on the BSD for 9 days now and have lost 3 kg. Very pleased by that loss. Enjoying the diet and have had some very tasty meals. Not even missing bread (my greatest weakness). However, we invited friends round for a meal at the weekend and I am struggling with what on earth to cook that will be nice for them and OK for me.

    Morning Bill,
Yes, I finally have ketosis! Just0.5 which, according to my chart is a trace so I hope to see that improve with time and some tweaks to my diet. Your reading is medium on my chart which is about right for the number of carbs you are eating. The higher numbers come from a diet of 20grams of carbs or less.

Not easy to explain cherrianne but I’ll try
in order to get high rankings on google (page 1) a website has to have good content but it also needs recommendations from other sites. These come in the form of backlinks, either a URL or a product title published on another site will do it.
You now have a situation where thousands of so call SEO people (Search Engin Optimisation) are trawling the net trying to get backlinks for the sites that are paying them (and it is VERY well paid)
The best links come from sites that have the same general interest factor as the site you are getting the links for, hence we get them from the diet pill quacks and now pushers of alternative diets. Unfortunately, forums, especially unmoderated forums are seen as fair game.
that is a very brief nutshell version but you will get the idea

    Lunch – don’t have.

Dinner, smoked haddock with something or other.

Fluffyslippers be VERY careful, especially if you are diabetic. I once followed that diet and it did me no favours, and I put on more weight. If you hanker after bread try the two flat bread recipes in the recipes tab on this forum. This isn’t just an 8 week diet -it needs to be a way of life! ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks Judith and Bill ๐Ÿ™‚ I’m not planning to leave either. I’ve never been one for forums before but I’m really enjoying the common goals we have on here. Everyone is quite open about their struggles and so supportive of each other. Considering how many people have joined there have been very few negative/ destructive elements.
How do you pick up the back links Bill? That’s the second post you’ve picked up on one. I didn’t have a clue what it was so I had to look it up. It makes sense that people try to link such a popular site with theirs, they’re just a kind of parasite really ( like intestinal worms or leeches lol)!!
I’m so not tech savvy!! I’ve never seen anything about diet pills either. Good on you for being so astute Bill.
There don’t seem to be any moderators on here. My husband belongs to some forums where they have them and they can remove posts which are inappropriate.

I was excited to see that recent studies show cooking, cooling and re-heating pasta, bread, rice and potatoes binds the starch and makes it less digestible, lowering the GI rating of flour products. I am keeping off these products in my initial 8 weeks, as they are still quite dense and carb rich, but I hope to put them back into my diet in small quantities once I’m off the strict stage.

    Hi,
like you I am vegetarian and was disappointed in the lack of vegetarian recipes in the book. I did find more on the Newcastle website http://www.ncl.ac.uk/magres/research/diabetes/documents/StudyRecipes.pdf, and have used the soups a lot. I decided that I would start using meal replacement shakes and for week 1 replaced two meals with them and the third meal was a stir-fry or soup or/and eggs. The second week I went down to one replacement meal and the third week I stopped them completely. I also followed the Newcastle approach for the first 2 weeks and was looking only at the 800 cals and not so much the amount of carbs I was eating. This all gave me time to adjust to 800 cals per day and get organised for what I could eat (no parsnip/beetroots/squash at the height of their seasons was a blow) and make a lot of soup.
I have got a bit sick of eggs…. so have greek yoghurt and blueberries plus 3gms each linseeds, pumpkinseeds and sunflower seeds for breakfast some days. Lunch is usually soup plus a salad – cucumber, tomato, spring onion and feta cheese is a good standby for this.
I have just reached my main goal to get my BMI down under 30 in 4.5 weeks losing 8.5kg, losing 2kg most weeks.
Other recipe books to look for Rose Elliots vegetarian low GI, and ignore the rice/pasta etc works for me.
    Good luck.

  • Are there any pony mad triathletes out there?!! I am trying to start the 8 week bsd because I have been training for a triathlon, I weigh 11 stones and am only 5’3″ tall, I can swim ok and cycle well but I feel like I weigh a ton when I try and run. So I need to shed a couple of stones before May! What I want to know , is anyone else out there training? And is it still OK to use 800 calories? Yesterday I ate 1700 and did two hours of training, I felt shaky and week, should I up my limit a bit? I don’t want to drown or fall off my bike or my pony!!! Or should I stick hard to it and reduce my training? I am a trained nutrition teacher although as I trained in the eighties, most of what I learned is now wrong!! So I know a bit about eating….
However I think I am an emotional eater and use food for kicks ( I need to get out more!) I am also 51 but see this as just a number…
Ps. I am also extremely hungry/famished/starving…!!

    Hi,
I’m a newbie, I’ve just completed week one and weighed myself this morning, i’ve lost 2kg (4.4 lbs).
It was a tough first few days of the diet but comfortable thereafter. I think for the week ahead I need to more meticulous with the cooking weighing scales and to incorporate some exercise as besides walking I didn’t do much last week.

A small step in the correct direction, hopefully it can continue.
It’s really motivational reading all the posts and seeing people’s progress even though we’re all physiologically different it’s still encouraging to see them and compare , whatever works I guess ๐Ÿ™‚

Hi I’m going to call you Lessofme, sounds better.
Stick with it, plateaus are a feature of every diet (Think WW etc)
This, to me shows that the plateau is not the fault of the diet but more an adjustment of the body to the new way of eating.
On 800 cals a day you HAVE to lose weight so hang in there, the weight loss will start again.

  • Don’t worry about him folks
He was either just a troll (the lowest form of forum life) or he had an agenda as he dropped a link to this diet in there so probably just a publicity seeker.
It’s an internet thing Called SEO and too complicated to go in to on here.
We’ve already had the diet pill merchants and as the forum gets more populat it will get worse.

Hi cherrieanne, I also feel like if we met we would really get on, we seem to be on the same wavelength so to speak. I enjoy reading your posts and look out for them.
The forums will need a lot of us ‘old timers’ to stay on because as more and more people join it will become difficult for a small handful to offer help and support to each individual – they could number many hundreds the way things are moving!
So sad to hear what happened to your grandmother, it sounds like the old advice may have shortened her life. My mother died a couple of years ago at 82 and that was still too soon for me (but not from diabetes).
I agree about finding low carb alternatives, the gram flour and coconut breads have made a big difference to me. Thankyou so much for being willing to try experimenting with the lupin seed flour.
Funny about the crisps – a couple of weeks ago I automatically reached for a bag while shopping then dropped them like they had burnt me when I realised what i had done. Haven’t done that in the chocolate aisle though!
    :). Judith

    Hi all,
I posted on here to say my weight loss seemed to have stalled in week 2&3, but pleased to say it’s started again and lost another couple of pounds (now in week 4). I even had a few days where I ate waaaaay over 800 cals (but stayed no carbs) because I just felt rubbish, so I’m glad I didn’t Jack it all in completely. So, 10 lb down and at least 3 inches off the waist. Ive got Hashimotos so wasn’t sure what my thyroid would do with this diet – diets don’t seem to work for me usually past the first week or two, so I’m very pleased and finding it enjoyable. I’ve got about another 10lb to lose so hopefully it’s doable over the next 4 weeks. Good luck all ๐Ÿ™‚ xx

Hi I’m a 45 year old female living in south west France. I came across this diet by accident whilst trying to look for diet books on Amazon and very happy that I did! I’ve tried so many diets but over last few years I haven’t been able to find the motivation to stick to any, even been doing 5.2 for a year, never lost any weight but what it did do was cut my portion sizes down and got me used to fasting, so I count that as good. I am gluten intolerant and suffer with periods of IBS. I don’t know if I’m pre diabetes but I do know that I love sugar, I am a secret eater too, I exercise like mad but when I get stressed or depressed, which has been a lot I will happily buy and eat a big bar of chocolate, good stuff as my tastes have changed, love Lindt but so many of these bars have a type of wheat in them, so it has to stop for two reason! I’ve cut out crap food and biscuits because of wheat, but then moved on to bananas and dates, again two high sugars. So many things going around my head and so much advice on what and what not to eat, I think that’s a major problem. So now I’m getting used to the challenge of what I can eat for 800 calories a day, actually I enjoy it. This is day 3, yes weighed myself as can’t help that, down 1kilo, so that’s enough motivation and bizarrely It feels ok, having 300 calories more than a fast day seems amazing and love everyone’s ideas and motivation, thank you. I started at 77kg and I’m about 5ft 4. My first goal is to get off 7kilos, a stone. What do you do if you eat out, generally in France they don’t do much on wheat free or calories in restaurants, so tomorrow night we are at a quiz with a set meal, I can avoid alcohol and bread and hoping its a roast meal and no pasta, maybe a fast will work, I shall see. One good thing I’ve found is a sugar free almond milk, at only 28 calories per 100ml and 0.1 sugars, I think this might become my drink if I need a little more than water or use in smoothies. Shopped yesterday, wore my glasses and started reading labels more, looking at the sugar content, amazing how much sugar added, so wrong and sad. I look forward to everyone’s post and have joined the Facebook page, stopped me feeling lonely, that’s great. Off to Zumba and walk dogs then see how hungry I am. Day 1 was 740 calories and day 2 802, so coping and use my fitness pal for recording everything. Was wondering what amount of carbs people stick too when buying goods, it’s the added sugars I look at as well. Anyway onwards and upwards, well downwards in weight! Feeling positive.

Thanks Penny. I’m 71, lost 15 kilos a few years ago with Weight watchers, but then it stalled and I’ve never managed to get back the momentum until now. I’ll be perfectly happy to see any kind of weight loss after wandering in the wilderness for so long. I tried Weight watchers again, but it just didn’t take. I’m adjusting to the lower calories, but often have that hollow empty feeling without being actually hungry. Currently I’m looking forward to getting out of the obese category. Overweight sounds so much nicer.

  • Hi welshyorkshirepudding ( wow that’s quite a moniker) welcome to the forums and good luck on your new journey. Stick with it and you will love the results!
