The Blood Sugar Diet does not focus on quantity of carbs. It focuses on quality – nonstarchy, complex, legumes, and making them a taste – not the whole meal.

Any advice about specific quantities you receive (and you likely will) comes from people experimenting to find out what works for them. So it is a personal limit, not part of the diet.

My own personal limit, until I started this diet, was 20 carbs in a 3 hour period. I still generally stick to that, since I know it is safe in connection with my blood glucose. I have tried to stick to the spirit of the diet, which does include more carbs than I can usually tolerate – and just last night had a 30 carb meal (primarily from chick peas and non-starchy vegetables). My BG peaked at 5.39. 🙂

My advice is to follow the recipes, and perhaps the menus, and not fixate on quantities of carbs you are eating – unless you are having a blood glucose response that troubles you.

    Hi Saelaine,
There are quite a few BSDers in NSW, some in Vic and a couple of us in SA and only one, I think, in Tassie.
You can find suppliers of the bread on their website. Not sure where you’d get the spud lite from in NSW, you might have to google that one.

  • and so we continue. Deliberately didn’t start this on Friday so as to make Monday my weigh in day to try to limit weekend over-indulgences.

fairly easy day, again felt a little bit spaced out and useless early-mid afternoon. I have an avo ripening up to attempt the avo baked egg recipe from the book on the weekend.

I was just out looking for new boots (found some!) and it was frankly a little odd to not buy something tasty for tea/to munch tonight. I’m not really too hungry but I do miss flavours. Also, there was exactly NO food options at the outlet mall I was at. Not one option, unless I just got a coffee Or went for a full on sit down meal and threw away the bread etc. Quite annoying!

food today: three shakes and I just whipped up some steamed cauli, mashed up with butter and marscapone with shredded ham, salt and pepper. Tasty, easy ‘can’t be bothered’ meal. It would have been nice with a poached egg on top actually. Quite filling. boring, though. Lots of water and peppermint tea.

Out at a hip hop concert tomorrow night, so bit worried about the eating out part – my friend will poo-poo the diet as ‘extreme and starvation’ I suspect. Wait and see.

so far so good. might check the scales in the morning. goodnight.

In the daily mail, a woman weighs eight stones and the scales says she is fat.
    She has washboard abs.

I told you and you didn’t believe me.

The world will be taken over by scales……. they are quiet….. Slowly…. Getting to us. One day they will take over , they will change the scales reading, we will all be in shock then BAM! They have taken over.

Hi! My name is Amy. I live in Virginia in the US. I am starting today as well! I am very excited.

I was diagnosed one year ago with Type 2 diabetes. I immediately started metformin and started the Whole30 diet. In 5 months I lost about 50 pounds. Then I lost interest in the diet and started cheating here and there, and I gained back most of the weight.

I saw this book on the Dr. Oz show 2 days ago and bought the book. After reading it, I decided to go for it.

I’d love to keep in touch and help support each other.

You can email me at amyscoutmom@gmail.com.

    Have a great day!

    Hello Fellow BS Diet followers.

I’m 57 , living in the UK and have just read the book, ordered the blood sugar monitor , cleared my cupboards, bought a Fit bit ( and am now addicted to monitoring my sleep patterns ! ) and booked my blood tests.
I need to do this – aside from the obvious health benefits, I can’t spend another summer in shapeless stretchy ‘fat’ clothes – shallow I know .

A brief history – skinny child and teenager, put on weight after 2 kids ( size 16 which crept up to 18) , got lazy but then lost 7 stone on Lighter Life in 20129 size 10 hurrah ) . Put it all back on again and some after battling with osteo arthritis and giving up on exercise. Had both knees replaced so now ready to go again. I’m fired up and ready for the challenge.

Can anyone recommend good carb and calorie trackers ? Planning on starting a blog to get everything down on screen. Found some US and Australian ones but didn’t recognise the brands they used.

I LOVE my food but I actually like cooking good food with fresh ingredients from scratch. I’ve found that over the years I can’t abide any shop bought ready meals which I think is a good thing. I just need to cut down on my portion sizes, carbs ( which I adore ) and that evening glass of wine.

The last visit we had to an Indian restaurant I had chicken tikka starter and tandoori king prawns with salad for main,
No adverse blood sugar readings next day thankfully

Hi Bill1954, in reference to ‘the chapati incident 04/16’ and to the tune of Lesley Gore’s ‘It’s my party and I’ll cry if I want to’…..all together now – It’s my chapati and I’ll cry if I want to. Bad joke, blame my sister-in-law for that one! On a serious note, I hope your levels have stabilised.

Judith, how fragile our bodies are! It makes me wonder what low level of discomfort we just put up with on our old carby diets without even realising. Having treated our bodies better these last few weeks, our bodies don’t want us to go back to the bad old ways. Probably the best incentive ever to stick with the new lifestyle for both you and me. I am also still struggling to get full health back a week after my last carb intake. I have been reading about the ceoliac test and thinking I should really ask for the blood test/biopsy. But to have it, I would have to go back to eating carbs every day for 6 weeks in order to find the antibodies responsible for the disease. There is no way!

my official weigh in is Tuesday but I like to weigh on Friday for a mid-week check in. I’m down another two lb’s 🙂

This morning I mashed up the raspberries I mixed through the yoghurt and it was really nice that way and I’ve bought some little silicon cupcake moulds which I plan to make little crustless quiche thingies in. Am going to try that for lunch today…

I’m on Day 5 of Week 3 following the Fast 800, and so far have lost 11.5lb as well as two inches off my waist – which I am more than pleased with! However, I have my first real challenge tonight, a (probably boozy) night out at an Indian Restaurant. Having avoided alcohol and all carbs for almost three weeks, I don’t want to undo all my progress in one evening…

My plan was to go for a chicken tikka dish (no sauce) and vegetable curry side, avoid rice / naan / poppadums, and have a couple of glasses of red wine. I just wondered if anyone had any better meal suggestions for the principles, and also if one night off the wagon is likely to derail me significantly? I have been trying not to weigh daily this week as I don’t want to see the reading on the scales go up, but succumbed this morning to see another 1.5lb go since Monday – hope I don’t regret that come next Monday lol!

Hi Judith. Some folk went home with vomiting and diarrhoea. Not sure if it was food or virus! Two dinners were much later than I normally eat so I had a little cooked meat and salad at lunchtime. Of course by the time we sat down to dinner I couldn’t finish what I’d ordered. Unheard of for me! Started week at 12st 7lb, back yesterday and weighed this morning at 12st 7lb. Again, unheard of for me! Made best choices. On the journey down we stopped at a burger van. I had a bacon and egg roll, sat in the car and ate the bacon and egg before putting the bread in the rubbish bin. Breakfast: bacon, egg, black pudding. Lunch: on two days, slice cooked meat with tomato and cucumber. Dinner: Monday – chicken Caesar salad without croutons followed by hake fillet with beurre blanc (no crumb topping). Ate chicken and anchovy, little lettuce and tomato, then half the fish with a little broccoli and carrot. Tuesday: fillet of trout with pea and lettuce salad and almonds followed by loin of pork without the sauce. Ate the trout and lettuce, then half the pork with a few cauliflower florets and a spoonful of ratatouille. Wednesday: had nothing at lunchtime. Dinner: duck rillette, spring onion and cucumber (no bread and sauce) followed by cod and asparagus (no sauce). Ate the duck and cucumber and about half the spring onion followed by most of the cod with a few bits of broccoli and one piece of carrot. No desserts. No biscuits at break time.

Quite a few people crossing out bits on the menu. Mainly for gluten free or allergies.

Wednesday night 3 of us who were sitting together had no desserts and we were told they had been paid for! The night I left the pork, the waiter asked why, was it ok! Just said I was full. Then he said I was saving room for dessert – pointed out I wasn’t having any😃

Must go for now. Need to iron tunic ready for funeral later.

It keeps on snowing and raining today. Think I might need thermal vest on😱

Hi lucia sorry to hear about your cold.

Stock up on lemons again – or even a bottle of jiff lemon juice. The sugars in cough syrups don’t help with coughs. Try some ginger root and/or chilli with the lemon.

    Hope you’re better soon 🙂

    Lesson learned.

Hi everyone. Just a quick check-in. Been away at residential conference near Scarborough from Monday, back yesterday afternoon. Weighed Monday morning at 12 st 7lb. Weighed this morning at 12st 7lb 😃 . Proper weighing day is tomorrow but just wanted to see how I’d done – at the hotel it’s 3 cooked meals, plus biscuits at coffee breaks. Weather and timetable meant no chance to go walking. Lots of crossing out on the menus we were given to choose from!

    Hi alan,
Apart from meat and fish everything has some carbs. So you have been eating carbs but low amounts of complex carbs which are not rapidly turned to fuel like the simple starchy carbs. So simple starchy carbs are rice, breads, pasta and potatoes.
Complex carbs are found in the salads, veg and fruits you eat.

Look at your days food and use calorieking to find out how many carbs you are having today.

If you are in the uk deduct the fibre from the carb value to get the correct figure.

You won’t run out of energy because you are still eating some carbs and the reason you are losing weight is because your body is burning your fat for fuel!

Don’t eat starchy carbs or you will go back to square one!!!!!

Hi 🙂 where are we all from? Certainly different time zones. I’m in Scotland and despite it being spring today it’s snowing!

My experiment was making a kind of lasagne using courgette strips instead of pasta and it turned out quite nice.

I used to do yoga and enjoyed it but due to my kids here and my husband working differing hours I couldn’t go regularly 🙁

Since I’ve started this I’ve committed to the 10000 steps per day which is double what I used to do. I have a treadmill so I have no excuses on the nights my husband is out.

Gotta go but I will be back later.

You can get a lot of the health food stuff, including the chickpea flour on Amazon. Might be more expensive £8.50 with Amazon prime, but comes in 5 x 200 bags so presumably will keep longer.

I too have been having sweet things again, but after the weekend I’m going to get back to basics. I don’t have diabetes luckily but do feel the difference when staying off the carbs etc. Keep well folks. J

The good thing about cold food is, you burn calories to bring it up to body temperature before your body can digest it, so it’s a double whammy!

  • Hi skywalker. I have decided to take this week as my experimental week of what works and what doesn’t for me. I have enjoyed the food etc which is great but probably need to be a little more concious of how much I am eating. I’m happy that although not many pounds lost I can actually get into my jeans! Not bad for a hell week! Happy days.
