I watched a programme on BBC Wales which was on just before this and the presenter followed a low carb diet for 3 weeks despite being advised not to do this by his G.P. and a weight loss expert. He lost 14lbs in weight, his B.P. dropped and his blood pressure dropped. This followed by the documentary on diabetes proved very interesting viewing. As nurse I can see how the NHS could save millions of pounds if they followed a different path and and changed their advice on diet. My sister-in-law is a very overweight type II diabetic and her G.P. seems to continue to increase her medication rather than to encourage her to change her terrible diet, and she appears happy to go along with it as it is an easier option, but in the long term I believe it will do her no good. Anyway rant over, I hope everyone is doing well, I lost 6.5lbs in my first week and I feel happier and more energised. Good luck !
Hi @cowslip. Thanks for your support. I have been logging into FMP to record my food/800cal. I looked at your comments and then found a section in the app the shows breakdown of intake by fat protein and carbs…. Guess what you are spot on it said that I had 37% carbs yesterday (my hungry day) compared to 20% and 25% on the days either side!! Whilst I didn’t think I’d had too many the proof was there!! I definitely know that I need to monitor this very carefully.

@flash21 do you think the Keto calculator and MFP are essentially the same way of recording the data….. I had a brief look at the KC version and it seems to ask for the same info I put into MFP? I’m very new to these apps so doubt my ability all the time.

Took 12 bin bags full of clothes to the Charity shop a couple of weeks ago after trying on almost everything in my house. Kept only those things that I could still wear (many only with a good belt) and some new stuff that I have bought recently in sales etc. I am refusing to do a proper wardrobe refresh until my weight is both comfortable and stable, which may be sometime as I still intend to lose between 2 and 3 stone. I found a suit I have never worn and the skirt is too big! I have never worn it. Missed the window.

I am still reading all the posts which I love to do but for some reason I’m on the bread. I have lost 13lb over a 3 maybe 4 month period but for the last 3 weeks nothing – not an ounce because of the bread. Daytime is fine it is evening when the munchies take over. BUT thanks for thinking of me now I’m going to get rid of this bread habit and do it properly and remind myself yet again of the title of this thread and why I need to do this.

Well one day away from my weekly weigh in I can’t believe how good and energetic I feel be it in my head but my work trousers are definitely more roomy.
Food is fab and hubby and I are really enjoying the recipes it’s dead exciting trying different ones out. I was stood in the queue proud of all my healthy purchases. By the way Aldi for fruit and veg beat all the other stores by a mile and all spices are only 49p I hope all of you are doing well on week 1 it seems to have flown by since Emily got us all going. Tip: If I get hungry I’m on sparkling water which just makes me full instantly.
My bum WILL be in those leather leggings by Christmas!!

I haven’t got the books either but have used my own recipes and adapted them, it helps that my family is originally from Sicily so I already eat in this way but have left out the carb’s. I have never been a slave to diet books and have always been keen to experiment with new foods and if I don’t like something I just don’t make it again. Also what’s the fuss about cauliflower rice, it tastes awful, but everybody has different tastes I suppose! Anyway lost 6.5 lbs in the first week and people are already saying I look thinner, I no longer feel hungry or crave carbs. I need to loose another 18lbs to reach my target as I am tryig to avoid Type II diabetes that runs in my family. Good luck to you all xx

I can’t remember if I introduced myself on here or not, but although I started the Fast 800 on Monday I feel like a bit of a fraud joining the Starting the BSD thread when I have actually been following one of the less extreme programs since May 😊 I am not expecting any carb monster problems as I have been keeping my carb low since then on a 4:3 version of the diet. If anyone is interested I have started a diary thread on the Fast 800 forum, which I intend to use to log my whole journey. I have been on various diets since Feb 2015 and am currently just over 6 stone lighter than I was then. This is the first diet that really feels like it will be sustainable as a way of life when the calorie counting stops. Since Monday I have lost 2.5 pounds.
I had the chicken and asparagus salad (p.210) for dinner tonight. It was super tasty and for the first time this week I actually feel full AND satisfied (could also be because I accidentally used creme fraiche instead of sour cream – ah well!). Highly recommended!
I’ve ordered the BSD Recipe Book, hopefully it’ll arrive tomorrow and I will definitely look out for the red curry. Thanks for the heads up!

I don’t have any of the books and have been merrily adapting recipes from other books and my own repertoire to be BSD friendly by myself. I also use some of the recipes on the site here or suggested by other posters, but usually with a few tweaks. No real disasters so far and plenty of lovely meals that will be revisited and become new permanent favourites.

Going to attempt a run tomorrow morning as I have a morning off and want to start bringing some exercise into my life again. Really sorry to hear about your gains guys but it will be temporary I’m sure and all will level out don’t be disheartened you are all doing brilliantly. For me my difficulty will start tomorrow as Friday, Saturday and Sunday are usually wine days for me so I will find it particularly difficult to break a long time habit!! On the upside the weight loss should be a good enough excuse to exist 😳😳😳

Coke Zero in the 8 oz glass bottle is one of my favorite treats. I don’t drink one every day, more like every other day. There’s something about that mineral taste of the glass that makes Coke so much more delicious. Plastic bottles and cans don’t even come close. The format has the added advantage of being small and manageable. It never loses carbonation like the big plastic bottles, and there’s no metallic tinge from the can.
Well that has solved the when to eat the rest of the cheese question – I forgot to put it away when my omelette was ready and left the room…. I should have known something was up when the dog didn’t come and nag me for her dinner, and I was so apologetic that I was late with it…. then later found the empty cheese container in the garden… need to tackle her excess weight too and this food stealing is a major issue, last week she beat the childlock on the bin….
I’m an extremely picky eater, and while trying to broaden my horizons, most of the recipes in the book aren’t appealing to me either. So I’m doing my own thing while staying within the calorie/carb count guidelines.

One thing I did notice today that was fantastic, was that after 3 days of no sugar, my baby carrots tasted exquisitely sweet! As if they were filled with sugar! Yum!

The Jewish new year is not just a time to renew our resolve to lose another fifteen pounds. Rather, it’s the time when our fate stands in the balance as G‑d reviews our past year and decides whether or not to renew our lease on His planet. As such, Jewish greetings for this time of year (the Jewish New Year is in the fall) reflect our prayers for a good, sweet year up ahead.
The catch-all greeting you can use for the entire season is “Shanah tovah” (שנה טובה), which means “Good year.” The word “u’metuka” (ומתוקה), and sweet, is sometimes appended to the end.
Here are some other greetings that you may hear:
Before Rosh Hashanah, people wish each other “Ketivah v’chatima tovah”(כתיבה וחתימה טובה) “A good inscription and sealing [in the Book of Life].” On Rosh Hashanah eve, as we return from synagogue service, it is traditional to greet one another with “Leshana tovah tikatev v’tichatem” (לשנה טובה תכתב ותחתם). When greeting a female, this is modified to“Leshana tovah tikatevee v’tichatemee” (לשנה טובה תכתבי ותחתמי). This means, “May you be written and sealed for a good year.”
From noon on Rosh Hashanah, when our fates are already written, until Yom Kippur, when our fates for the coming year are to be sealed, we wish each other “Gemar chatimah tovah” (גמר חתימה טובה), “A good final sealing.”
Now for the Yiddish version: The standard wish is for “A gut gebentsht yohr,” “A good and blessed year” (א גוט געבענטשט יאהר). And since tradition tells us that our fate is not really sealed until Hoshanah Rabba, the customary salutation for that day is “A gutten kvittl” (א גוט’ן קוויטל), “A good inscription.”
No matter what we say, the main thing is to wish each other a good, sweet year with all our heart – because that is what G‑d values the most.

Shanah Tova U’Metukah
I managed to drive past FOUR McDonald’s drive-ins today WITHOUT stopping for a filet-o-fish and a Coke. In my little world, that’s a MAJOR accomplishment. (I won’t pretend it was emotionally easy, but hey, I did it.)
day 4 and doing ok! so busy at work that I’m ok there, it’s at home where Im in most trouble so I did binge last night but it was on celery and a small hummus dip so I don’t feel that guilty lol!
new scales arrived yesterday and I’ve lost 4.5 lbs and when I weighed myself this morning the scales said another 3lbs had come off but I’ll take that with a pinch of salt!
I know the book encourages you to weigh yourself often but surely you should only have 1 ‘weigh in’ a week or is that too ‘slimming world’?
also is anyone else feeling a tad gassy?? please reassure me I’m not the only one propelling myself down the road of a morning 😀

Nothing like extending the fast for another day. 48 hour fast and still alive. I am just proof that when you get rid of barley rye and wheat, you can live long time without feeling starvation only 3 hours later. I feel like a Neanderthal when they fasted for days or weeks for not finding food. 130 now and 5 more hours til sundown and can eat again!
Maybe Sunday and Monday will be another 48 hour fast. Why doing this fasting? This is the most important 10 days. New year to Yom Kippur. These are The Days of Penitence. After Yom Kippur fast is over, it is a new clean slate for all Jews……. Sins forgiven and one starts a new year with improvements in their lifestyle and their mores.

Today is Fast of Gedalia, holiday for fasting because the Babolonians (Now Iraq) destroyed the Temple in 443 BC. A god preparation though for the fast on Yom Kippur. Nothing like starving oneself! LOL 300+ pounds I think I will live.
i hate metformin, i have now lost 2 stone bloods petty good so have now dropped to half the dose look forward to more weight loss and less tablets. still on blood pressure tablets
I was low on iron earlier in the year and had tablets but it’s ok now they say. I dunno it’s just a bit rubbish at times 🙁

Well, I had quite a sugar burst these 2 days. I have had many honey servings for a sweet new year. Hopefuly, it stays sweet! 🙂 Starvation day is next Wednesday, Yom Kippur. All day in the temple and thinking about food at 3 PM when 4 hours are only left til sundown. It was quite a successful holiday this year in a new city. My first time in an Ashkenazic (Germanic decent) temple. Always been to the Sefardic (Spanish decent) temple for the past 35 years. It was new for a change because of different customs. It is usually a good hour longer in a Sefardic one because of the custom of having an auction for the particiation in the service. This is a 500+ year old custom because of the Inquisition.
Many make a honey cake to eat on Rosh Hashanah. No, not for me. The melon and few cookies was enough for me.
@kjandtheboys 10lbs is fantastic! If you’re feeling very hungry you may need to adjust your protein \ fat count upwards a little. These satiate your hunger far more. Again, if it’s craving-style hunger you may have carbs set a little too high for your metabolism. As Flash says, more water helps too – try for 3l daily: that can also help with headaches.
@flash, I find that cravings are the first sign that my carbs are too high – is it worth checking the carb count on the shakes compared with your non-shake diet in week 1? Carb intolerance differs for individuals, so you may find it useful to double-check the carb count. If it’s actually higher this week than last, you could nudge them incrementally until cravings go again?
My youngest came home from school today having baked bread. ! had to have a sliver to avoid disappointing her and it was truly yummy, but thankfully wholegrain with hazelnuts and lots of spices: hopefully I can absorb that ounce or so into today’s carb count.

I’ve just watched the Panorama program on Diabetes, that was screened on Monday October 3rd, for the second time.
If anything it was more harrowing second time around.
I know that the program was only an hour long so couldn’t cover every aspect of treating T2 diabetes. Nonetheless, I felt that , apart from the shock value, it contributed little to help people with diabetes to help themselves.
For example there was a young boy of 15 who was visiting the hospital and he checked his b/g, it was 18!!! The doctors response was, and I quote , ‘ I’m sure your eating healthier now but you need to eat less’
Helpful!! Well at least it was a nod towards the fact that diet does play a part!
The two bariatric surgery patients in the program were given low calorie diets , of between 800 and 1000 calories a day, to follow for 4 weeks before they were deemed fit for surgery. The diet sheet showed 1 ‘low fat’yogurt a day as part of the diet. The guy was having porridge for breakfast and then had 4 hour 9 minutes to wait for his next meal, which was an apple! Carbs carbs carbs! I eat much better than that for the same 800 calories!!!
The commentator said …’One way to ‘save’ T2 patients from the worst consequences of the disease is bariatric surgery.
The surgeon did say that there is good evidence to show that bariatric surgery can ‘cure’ diabetes. Later in the program, after performing bariatric surgery, he commented that ‘ bariatric surgery is the ‘only’ way to control the current problem!!
So I ask …. why is bariatric surgery so successful at curing diabetes …. because people lose weight!!!! I know that’s very simplistic but the science behind LCHF suggests that people could do equally well with diet as they do with surgery. Only problem is diet needs desire and willpower!!
I would love to see more emphasis on the right sort of diet as a tool to help diabetics care for their health. To’ ‘save’ themselves from the worst consequences’ of diabetes before being routinely offered , as was suggested, bariatric surgery as a cure all!

Day 6 for hubby and I.
Yesterday our main meal was the bacon, broccoli and mushrooms out of the recipe book. Really enjoyed it.
Today for our main meal I have cooked lamb tagine. Had it with courgette dry fried as I don’t like quinoa. Enjoyed this also:-) I used a lamb neck fillet chopped up.
Next time I will just cut the meat up into four portions and cook it.
In the recipe is butternut squash, there was lots left over. So with me going out for lunch tomorrow I have made
butternut squash soup with two and a half peppers as I did not have four. Had a sneaky taste and its lovely.
Weigh day on Saturday. eek
I have settled to this diet and I am not tempted by the chocolate we have in for our grandchildren. Not missed bread and other things. Bowels have sorted themselves out, I think:-/ I feel quite well and have more energy than last week. Just need to keep on top of the extra fluids which I am finding difficult this week for some reason.
Turkey burgers – I made these last week. Worked very well – good both hot and cold. Assume they freeze well.
I made the Parmesan Crisps – wonderfully tasty cheesy snack, very moreish. Had a couple for lunch today with cream cheese on top with salad.
However, I am wondering if the recipe is entirely accurate – I think a cooking time of 2 minutes at 150C is a bit optimistic – I gave them a while longer, and increased the heat. I assume the idea is that the cheeses melt and meld with the ground almonds to form something more solid. After cooling, the base was crispy but the top was still rather crumbly, and they tend to break up easily. Also, the recipe states the mixture makes 8 – I actually ended up with 14, and I was using generously heaped tablespoons when I put dollops on the baking tray (not the dessertspoon mentioned in the recipe).
I will make these again but maybe I will tweak the quantities…
Hi thanks for the tips Flash21 I’ll definitely check out the Keto calculator. I had a shake for late breakfast as its been one of this kinda days for me. I ate a 200 cal lunch (homemade) and drinking gallons of water… I guess it’s early into the new regime so I’m gonna trial a few different things until I find a way that works for me within the 800 cals. I weighed again this morning and was down another 3lb…. It’s definitely keeping me on track!!
Thanks to all for your input. Until I started eating on this plan the eat what your given wasn’t an issue. I just seem to notice when I’m feeling full and look at what’s on my plate and think this is crazy. I’ll definitely be using some of your ideas. Thanx

Hi to all, I was only diagnosed 2 weeks ago after going to a pre-op for a hip replacement! I had already lost a stone, no symptoms at all so was a complete shock! still waiting to find out if I am type 1 or 2 as I don’t fit the profile for either I am told!, any advice greatly appreciated, I am now looking through all the recipes and cooking new meals within BSD. I have always had a healthy diet my BMI is great, I just suffer with arthritis
Well done resisting wine & chocolates ButterflyMoves & try to take it easy. Lots of water & an Ibuprofen helped me when I ached & felt rough & that lasted one day so onwards & downwards!!! Hope you feel better tomorrow.
